David Archuleta to perform in Pocatello on Friday

By Courtney Johnson cjohnson@journalnet.com

POCATELLO — Pop star David Archuleta will perform at the Portneuf Health Trust Amphitheatre on Friday night.

The gates open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets for Friday’s performance can be purchased at smithstix.com.

Archuleta found his fame at age 16 when he was the runner-up on the seventh season of “American Idol.

Archuleta didn’t always have plans to become a music artist. Throughout his childhood, he wanted to be zookeeper, a dentist and even a social worker. Even though he kept changing his mind, he always knew that he wanted to connect to people in some way.

Obviously, Archuleta didn’t become a zookeeper or a social worker, but he was able to find a special way of interacting with others.

“Music is way to connect with people,” Archuleta said. “I’ve always wanted to connect with people, to tell stories and hear peoples stories, and I get to do that through writing songs.”

Last month, Archuleta released his latest EP, Orion. The Orion EP has four new songs that were inspired by events in his life that left an impression on him.

“This new music is basically written from my journey of the last several years of my life,” Archuleta said. “From becoming an artist and performing on ‘American Idol’ to touring and making albums to then doing a complete 180 turn by going to South America to be a missionary, I have this new perspective on life and I’ve written about it.”

Archuleta plans to release one more EP before he releases a full album later this year. By releasing two EPs, he is able to get a feel for how his fans will react to his new music.

“I want my fans to like the music, but I also want to see how they feel about the story and message,” Archuleta said. “I am trying to get a feel of how people will respond and react.”

When Archuleta isn’t touring and writing music, he admits to sometimes wasting too much time watching videos on YouTube like Studio C. He also loves to find new restaurants on Yelp and try them out with friends and family.

Since his run on “Idol,” Archuleta has released seven of his own albums including an appearance as a guest star on The Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s holiday album, “David Archuleta — Glad Christmas Tidings.”

“I seriously love food,” Archuleta said.

Archuleta is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and likes to show his fans all facets of his life from spiritual moments he has throughout the day to which new restaurant he recently tried out.

“My religion helps shape how I live my life and it helps give me so much fulfillment and happiness so I had to learn how to be open about all aspects of my life,” Archuleta said.

At his performance, Archuleta will perform a number of his older songs that fans will know along with some of his newer music. He will also throw in a few cover songs from famous artists throughout the last few decades.

“I want people to feel good when they listen to my music,” Archuleta said. “But I also want them to feel like they can connect to something deeper, like a deeper version of themselves and a deeper part of life. That’s really the purpose of this new music being released.”

David Archueta to Showcase New  Music in Pocatello

By Erin Burke

David Archuleta is coming back to Idaho for a concert, featuring Nathan Pacheco.

They will be performing in Pocatello at the Portneuf Health Trust Amphitheatre on Friday, June 16 at 8 p.m.

On Wednesday, two days before the concert in Pocatello, he was enjoying his day off by traveling and resting at truck stops. For weeks, he said he has been practicing his songs on a daily basis with very few breaks.

Archuleta’s newest EP, Orion, was released on May 19, according to davidarchuleta.com. He said he plans to perform some well-known songs from his previous projects and old albums, songs from his new EP and a new song which has not been released yet.

“The song I’ll be singing that I haven’t released yet is a preview of what is yet to be released,” Archuleta said.

He said he is releasing his next EP within a month or so, then he is releasing an album later this year.

Archuleta said he wants to come closer to God through his tour, so he likes to start every concert and writing session with a prayer.

“I remember one time a (songwriter said) that with the twenty years (he’s) been in the business, (he’s) never started a writing session with a prayer,” Archuleta said. “He said that was special.”

He then asked the writer if he wanted to say a prayer to end the session. He said the writer said he did not think he knew how to pray. Archuleta said he told him to say what was in his heart.

“He bowed his head, and he just started talking to God and thanking Him,” Archuleta said. “Afterwards, he was like, ‘I have goosebumps.’”

One of Archuleta’s greatest motivations for creating his new music has been the experiences he has had over the past seven years of his life.

Archuleta said, “After coming back from my mission in Chile, I had such a new perspective on everything.”

Orion, in specific, is a showcase of the perspective he has gained over the years.

He said these new songs are full of things he wants people to know. He has hopes that his songs will inspire people to stay strong because there have been times when he has felt not good enough or not known how to move forward.

Archuleta said he thinks those at BYU-Idaho may feel like they are not good enough and that his songs from Orion will help students to remember their worth. Sometimes students feel pressured to be perfect and that they cannot show any weakness because Christ said to be perfect.

“Christ said to be whole, to be complete,” Archuleta said. “He didn’t say that you can’t be flawed.”

Archuleta said he is coming to Pocatello because he has been there before and enjoyed connecting with audience members of the southeastern Idaho region.

“I want people to leave feeling better and lighter—feeling better about themselves and feeling motivated to keep moving forward in life,” Archuleta said.

Archuleta’s first single “Crush,” debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart the week the singe released. Archuleta’s first album, “David Archuleta,” went gold, and sold more than 750,000 copies in the U.S. and more than 900,000 copies worldwide.

Happy Holidays to David Archuleta, Family, and Fans!

This has been an incredible year in David Land.  This Christmas Tour was amazing.  I feel sad that this time many haven’t been able to witness the gift that is David but I know that will change in 2017.

Here are some of our favorites videos from the Christmas Tour.

Abrra:

I have a huge archive of videos to choose from thanks to 8throwcenter and ShelleyFOD who film at every show they attend.  So, I opened my files and these are my favorites!

Mary Did You Know-8throwcenter

This song is up there with my  all time favorites. Lyrically superior with a  haunting melody sung by someone who understands it.

White Christmas-ShelleyFOD

This song is vocal perfection. David adds his special vocal technique to the melody like no other. His interaction with the band brings them into focus during the musical interlude.

The Christmas Song-ShelleyFOD

Some songs that David sings are all about the sound for me. This one is all about the visuals. He interprets the lyrics with his hand movements and facial expressions. He draws us into the song with him.

I can’t finish my part without mentioning all the wonderful quirky and fun IG stories that David has made for fans. I particularly enjoyed the ones where he sang. I captured one he did from his hotel room where he sang in Mandarin language. It was a reprise of the song he performed in China, My Heart Represents the Moon.

You can find a copy of this in Abrra’s Candy Jar
https://www.mediafire.com/folder/b1olqhp4e2va5/David’s_IG_Stories

Bebereader:

My very favorite performance is the jazzed up version of “White Christmas” but since Abrra already chose that one above, here are my next three picks.

Glorious. My heart leaps a beat whenever I hear the intro to Glorious. This song does to me what it’s meant to do.  It lifts me up because it’s so life-affirming. Am happy that David chose to include it in the set list for this Christmas tour.

credit: Shelley FOD

The Prayer. I liked this song from waaayyy back but David brought it back to life for me. In this duet, David’s and Nathan’s voices blend harmoniously resulting in a beautiful sound. I love the respect they have for one another too.  Yes, this was definitely one of my favorite performances from this tour.

credit: ThinkingAboutPandA

My Little Prayer. I call this song the little song that could and did. It started out as just a dream David had and turned into something remarkable for a young singer songwriter. I honestly didn’t want to like this song because I tend to stay away from songs about someone’s dream. But the end result, after David polished it for recording and singing live for this tour gave me no choice; it’s just just wonderful.

credit: Shelley FOD

Djafan:

All are my favorites at some point due to various circumstances.  Right now these are on repeat.

Oh Holy Night.  This has been my favorite Christmas song since I can remember and having David’s version completes the sound it’s supposed to have.

credit: 8throwcenter

Ave Maria.  This is another song that I grew up listening to and loved.  But David singing it opens up the heavens.  He sang it at VIPs and so glad it was recorded.

credit: 8throwcenter

Joy To The World.  David’s live version is so soulful.  I love when David lets out the soul.  The ending is killer.

David Archuleta ~ Layton Concert Recaps by Dayzee & Tawna

Posted by djafan on Monday, December 12, 2016

layton-shelley-b-w

I love recaps!  Here are two from the lucky gals that were able to go to Layton sold out concerts.

Dayzee:

Spent a great evening with Tawna and Ron and David and Nathan. I really liked the crowd tonight. They were very appreciative. They stood up, shut up and laughed it up in all the right places. David did a bouncy Pat a Pan. When he sang White Christmas it felt like he was saying “Hey look what I can do” as he strutted through that song. His signature renderings of O Holy Night and Joy to the World were especially moving tonight. There were some extensive ramblings after which he told us we could wake up the people who had fallen asleep because he was ready to sing now. Still loving The Drummer Boy. Numb had the lyric video playing on the screen behind him and it was a nice touch.

credit Shelley FOD

I wanted to mention the Boise VIP. When Kari first came she told us all pictures would be with both David and Nathan and we were not to ask for one or the other. David kept Nathan in every conversation. At most David VIP’s the fans are requested to submit questions for David. This time he would answer the question and then pass it on to Nathan, always keeping Nathan on equal footing. Someone asked what foods David likes to cook. He told us he can fix a bowl of cereal. With milk. That’s his specialty and only culinary talent. Then Nathan told us he did not cook, but was excellent at eating. He had a long list of favorite foods. Then he said that he liked to sing on a full stomach. David visibly shuddered, and Nathan said David did not join him in that thinking.

In Idaho Shelley told me she could not make the Layton/Logan concerts and Las Vegas would be her next. We will miss her photo and video gifts.

Thanks to another fan I have tickets for the evening performance in Layton tomorrow, then will miss Logan as I will be on my way to Vegas.

Last night I went to David’s concert with my country music granddaughter. She had not been to a concert with me since David was with Brad Paisley at Stadium of Fire. As we approached the auditorium there was a dazzling display of a Christmas light show on the opposite side of the street. We walked up to the venue doors thinking this was pretty dark after all those sparkling lights. It was just after 6 and we expected the doors to be unlocked, but no. An official came out and told us we could not enter the building because there was no power. The power company was on their way and we would get news as it developed.

Random: I currently have the Motab on TV singing David songs and they are pretty good. Not David, but pretty good.

Back to the concert. Fans gathered and huddled outside the doors. Rain had been falling all day and there was no letup. Half an hour later we were told they were trying to set up for an acoustic event. If we wanted to stay for that, we would be welcome. No one left. The time on my ticket said 7, but that hour came and went. Around 7:30 we were allowed in and found our seats. The musicians were moving their instruments down from the stage to the area before the front row of seats. Instead of scooting our chairs, they were scooting the show towards us. Great! I looked around. A sold out house and there were still no empty seats. They promised us some kind of show by 8. Lights came on at 7:45 and the musicians came down and moved their stuff back on stage. Shucks.

The emcee came out and thanked us for being so nice and so patient. Hey, we are David fans here. We are always nice.

When Nathan came out he told us of their chaos backstage, trying to come up with a set list that would work for an acoustic show.

David thanked us for still being there. As if we would leave.

Was it worth it? Any inconvenience disappeared when David stepped on the stage. When Nathan begins Drummer Boy I am no longer unhappy. Instead I am ecstatic because I know David will soon be bounding onto the stage to show us all how fun that song can be.

I thought Riu Riu was especially good last night. It was all wonderful. A forever memory.

Made me smile to see Shelley’s second pic at #37 with David in front of the big green DAVID ARCHULETA on the screen. David turned around to see what was on screen and gave a little snort saying, “That’s not a Chistmas picture!” Self-promotion is just not a David thing.

layton-shelley

David shortened his stories considerably on Saturday night. He always says he is working on doing less talking, but I want to hear it all. My granddaughter enjoyed David speaking and said, “He’s just like a real person when he talks.” Hmmm

When Tawna and Ron came to their seats on Friday Ron jokingly tried to pick a fight with us saying, “You know we have already seen this show.” No, Ron. Every time David is on stage is a new show.

Hoping for some good Ninjas for Tuesday night in Logan. I will be on my way to Las Vegas. Looking forward to a great time with Jan and David.

Tawna:

Ron and I had theee most fun evening last night!! What fun it is to be with Dayzee at a David concert! David and Nathan were wonderful … but then, that is not new news to anyone here! Dayzee and I giggled several times at dumb little things that David would say or do. He’s ‘just David’, still.🙂 I completely agree with her viewpoint on last night’s crowd. Layton loves David. They were also very, very open to Nathan. I don’t consider Nathan Pacheco as an opening act. Even though he does open the show, David very much includes him as an equal sharer of the bill. He will, out of nowhere, just say something like, “let’s give another round of applause to Nathan Pacheco”! It’s so interesting to watch them watch each other when they are on stage together. They are two peas in a pod, IMHO! Learning from each other and practicing on each other.

I’m going to go on a little rant here, though. Utah concert goers, get your act together! When the ticket says that the show starts at 7:00, be there and in your seat by 6:45!! If you want to purchase merch get there early enough to do it before starting time or wait until after!! I’d be willing to bet that they were late starting last night because they could see all the seats that were still empty and knew that they had been sold. Plus, the lobby was still crawling with people coming in. It just irritates me to no end when this happens. I don’t know how it is in the rest of the country, but Utahans are notorious for lateness. And, this is coming from a native Utah girl. But, I was taught while very young that late is not good. My dad always had us there with time to spare — thank you dad! Oh, and one more thing… if it’s date night and you are sitting next to your sweetie, DO NOT keep leaning into each other and snuggling (especially if you’re in front of me). The person behind you (ahem, me) wants to see the performer whose name is on the ticket, not the back of your heads that make a better door than a window. The seats in that auditorium are lined up very well so the stage can be seen … if you sit straight in your chair. Yes, I’m talking to you, Mr. Tall guy in front of me last night, with your arm around your wife and your shoulders touching, and you got there after the 7:00 start time! Okay, *rant over!*🙂 (whew, I feel better)

credit: David Archuleta

One more thing, the audience loved MLP and Numb. When we left last night, Dayzee and I both noticed that the merch tables had lines. We decided that since David introduced them the way he did during the show, that people were now crazy to get them in their hands. It was great to see it.🙂 I would love to be able to see this show again and again. Unfortunately, unlike my Duracell Dayzee friend, that never slows down, my body won’t take those long car rides for awhile. I’m hoping that next year brings improvement.

You’re out of luck if you still want tickets to tonight’s show. It’s Sold-Out! Being a long-time fan, it’s not surprising that most, if not all of the shows on this tour are sold-out, given the incomparable Christmas Show David gives to his audience.  The last Christmas show I went to was at Westbury right before David’s mission. I remember that “What just happened?” feeling we all experienced when the show was over. Euphoria for sure.

Safe travels and the best time to all going tonight. Thanking you in advance for any pictures, videos, tweets and IGs you can share.

The Gerrit de Jong, Jr., Concert Hall is used for concerts of the major choral and instrumental organizations, musical theatre productions of the opera workshop, special lyceums, and official meetings of the college or University. It is also used for high-quality recordings and live film and television productions of musical events.  The de Jong Concert Hall is beautifully designed, aesthetically and acoustically. Its seats are arranged in continental seating style with no center aisles. The stage is 94 feet across and 47 feet deep, with a tip that adds 10 feet for a total depth of 57 feet. A functional, handsome facility, it seats 1,268.
