David Archuleta ~ Caught in His Web

Posted by djafan on Sunday, October 13, 2013

webda1

ennui  (French) noun:  a feeling of listlessness and general dissatisfaction resulting from lack of activity or excitement.

This is what I’ve been feeling lately. I know a year and a half has passed. I know that means we have only six months left to wait. But I also know why this song by the Kinks has been playing over and over in my head lately.

http://s0.wp.com/i/support/content-unavailable.png

There is a struggle going on in me. Sometimes I don’t play his music for days that turn into weeks. Sometimes I try to listen to other music for a while. I ended up placing my used copy of Sara Bareilles’ CD, The Blessed Unrest in the card I was mailing to him. It was a spur of the moment act. “Maybe you can listen to it on your P day,” I scrawled as I waited in line at the post office. The fact is, I’m tired. Tired of the same songs on the same albums of his. Tired of listening to anyone else because he has me ruined. So most of the time, I just don’t listen to anyone at all. Maybe I’m crazy, (pro-ba-bly) but I think I know something of what Teddy must have felt in the play Arsenic and Old Lace.

Reverend Harper: Have you ever tried to persuade him that he wasn’t Teddy Roosevelt?

Abby Brewster: Oh, no.

Martha Brewster: Oh, he’s so happy being Teddy Roosevelt.

Abby Brewster: Oh… Do you remember, Martha, once, a long time ago, we thought if he’d be George Washington, it might be a change for him, and we suggested it.

Martha Brewster: And do you know what happened? He just stayed under his bed for days and wouldn’t be anybody.

I just sit in my car in silence and don’t listen to anybody. It’s quite pleasant, really. I think a lot about stuff. Like a few days ago, I was sitting quietly in my car, waiting for the heavy wrought iron gate that sits at the entrance to our little lake community to slowly open. At that moment, I was wondering what the heck I was going to write about him next. It gets harder the longer he’s away. And then I saw them. A dozen spider webs had sprung up on the iron gate over night to adorn the bleak bars with a delicate, intricate beauty. I took out my phone and snapped a picture of it and drove on, thinking how like those webs his hold on us is. How we are caught, as securely as any prey was ever held. And how struggling only makes the cords of love grow tighter.

canvas444

Looking back, I realize why I did not see it coming. How was I to see those gently spinning diaphanous threads wafting toward me as I watched and listened each week in wide-eyed innocent wonder? What was there to fear while waiting on the world to change into imagining angels shopping around for smokey mountain memories along that long and winding road to heaven? By the time he strode out to Apologize it was too late. I was already tightly, hopelessly ensnared. With each concert that followed, each video uploaded, I became more captivated and more his captive.

In time he could walk away with confidence, knowing we were securely tethered until his return. When he does, the vibrations will be felt all over the web and across the wide world the net will tremble and our release will come. But we will never be free.

In the Studio With David Archuleta

Posted by MT on Sunday, August 18, 2013

Fullscreen capture 8182013 62129 PM.bmp

THIS!!! This video is all kinds of WIN! That’s pretty much all I could say at first about the amazing studio recording we got as a gift from Kari Sellards. I was left almost speechless after the first viewing. I was having a hard time thinking of what I could possibly say about his brilliance in that video. I can’t tell you how amazed I was watching him in action in the studio. I am in awe, to say the least.

Why do I love it so much? Well, I’ll be “shallow” first and say I love the little glance he gives at the beginning, a quick glance directly at the camera showing us he knows he’s being recorded. And let’s face it, he is beautiful with a set of headphones on. I don’t really know why I love that but I do. Love Love Love. Maybe it’s because in my mind he is a “recording” artist and him with headphones while he’s in studio is what my mind feels is a true depiction of who David is. It’s where I feel he belongs. (And on stage of course)  No matter how gorgeous he is, it’s really all about The Voice and the genius behind it.

David in studio, in this video, shows us just how talented he is. And though I have no technical expertise when it comes to music, even I can recognize what a true professional he is, the amazing control he has over his voice, how brilliant he is with improvisation, and how he “feels” the music and is able to so beautifully express himself through perfectly matched vocals. As someone with no musical talent, I would probably be trying to match the music with my notes and tones. But David knows how to take the music to a new level by contrasting his vocals and adding another melodic layer as well as a depth of emotion to the song that can pierce your soul. *sigh* Beautiful.

I’ve heard (seen?) fans say, “What I wouldn’t give to have David at my house for a day so I could pick his brain, or just talk to him for hours.” Me? NO WAY!  No way could I have David talking to me for a day. I’d be a nervous wreck. I love the guy but the thought of talking to him terrifies me. (But in a good way! haha) I am in awe of him and would probably be struck dumb, so that wouldn’t work for me.

But what I WOULD love is to be in the recording studio with him for a day. Not near him, just standing in the background watching. I would pay big bucks to just watch him being himself, recording, improvising, discussing the technical aspects of what he needs to do. And then watching him do what needs to be done, while at the same time adding what he “feels” into the songs. I’d love to watch his mind at work, watch his genius at work. Add to that the wonderful benefit of getting to hear that voice all day, in person. I can’t imagine it getting any better than that.

Reinventing David Archuleta

Posted by Abrra on Saturday, October 27, 2012

Bench Photoshoot

I saw this headline above a poll on a website that targets a young demographic:

“Do you think David Archuleta will be as famous when he returns from his two-year mission?”

Immediately it occurred to me that the timing of this question was all wrong. It’s too soon to ask because he practically just left for his mission. His status as a famous singer at this point is pretty much established. The release of two very different albums that are still fresh in the minds of fans confirms this.

Luckily for fans, David has dedicated management in Kari Sellards. For the time he is away it will be on her shoulders to keep the home fires burning with fans.

Considering that he has the opportunity to sing while on his mission is a huge advantage. It keeps his voice in shape and feeds the love he has for singing before a crowd. Keeps the instrument fine tuned, so to speak.

When David made the decision to put his career on hold to go on a church mission, he began his reinvention plan. To leave the young kid from American Idol and move on to build upon his foundation for a well-defined life and career. What better way to find yourself than to go where no one knows you. A fresh start in a far off land has given David time to reconnect with himself. He seems to have a long-term plan in mind.

While we fans want nothing more than to see him happy, David realizes in his heart what has to happen to accomplish his happiness. Right now he is fulfilling a life long dream to serve. I believe that as fans, we will realize the benefits of this journey for many years to come.

Realizing that I can do nothing but wait, I am more focused on what will be happening when David returns to the world of entertainment. The question that comes to my mind is: With so much time away, how will David reinvent his career? He has told us “I can’t wait to bring back that person I become.” What will this “new” David show us about what he has learned and applied to his craft while away? I want to believe part of what he will bring is new original songs. He is acquiring such a variety of life experiences that will surely prompt some deep lyrics ala “Broken”.

Taking his music in a whole different direction is not unusual for David. He has sung individual songs in foreign languages. Will being immersed in the Spanish language give him the confidence to finally assemble a full Spanish album? Imagine the impact on his career this would have. A whole new continent of fans in the southern hemisphere. Can Europe be far behind?

Dr. Abrra’s advice to David Archuleta:

Stay with family.
Learn to say NO.
Readjust to the fast-paced life of Utah and LA.
Date and spend time with those you care for the most.
Reestablish ties with industry people who have expressed an interest in your music.
Reacquaint yourself with those who showed you no interest in the past. They might be pleased to see the growth in your person.
Hire a stylist.
Open for an established singer. This will help to get your new stage skills honed.
Dance, dance, dance on stage!
Avoid auditioning for The Voice TV show.
Check in with the Sony Asia, TV5 and Bench folks.
Publish the songs you have already written. Record them in Nashville or LA where you have contacts.
Sign up for Music Composition and related courses. You can do these online. It will help your skills in writing and arranging songs.
Write an outline for a book on your experiences while in Chile.
Plan and execute the biggest fan appreciation concert tour the US has ever seen.
Include cities in Canada and the deep south USA.

David Archuleta ~ Keeping Him Relevant

Posted by djafan on Wednesday, October 3, 2012

The six month mark of David Archuleta’s departure has just passed and we have eighteen months to go. I’m measuring time by holidays and it seems to be working. Labor Day was just last month, Halloween is almost here and Thanksgiving soon after. Christmas is going to be tough this year without David but I’m so looking forward to it because it’s also close to the beginning of the twelve month countdown. There are days I miss David so much it hurts and although it was a tough road getting to this place, I’m ok with him being gone now; I truly believe he had to go.

In the meantime I have his music to get me through every day and his voice on interviews on my ipod to get me through the night. You may have seen my name, djafan, on comments on articles relating to David found on the web. You may also have seen me voting on polls and mentioning David’s name as much as possible, tweeting and trending, etc. You get it. LOL This is what I do.

We all have a comfort zone on how we support David and this is my way of keeping his name relevant.  By letting the world know he has passionate fans that are not going anywhere, the media stays interested in him. It works; it really does. For example, recently Cook and Kris Allen were dropped from their labels just months apart and it was barely a blip in the social media. David, however,  made mainstream media with the so-called “dropped” news that he was let go from his label when it was really the opposite. David chose not to renew his contract. As soon as his passionate fans started correcting the news the media then picked it up too, and many made an attempt to correct it.

The mission news made headlines also; not only on the internet but television also carried the news, showing clips of the video. I attribute this continued interest by the media to David’s go-getter fans.  Most reality show alums have just fallen off the radar, but David Archuleta has not and our intention is to keep his name  relevant and out there.

With this in mind and after much prodding from my fellow Adms, I encourage you to vote, to comment, to view David’s videos, to like his Facebook posts, to comment on his OS, heck even his MySpace page has been updated and it‘s beautiful.

I like to follow some charts on David’s social media status, yes the information is out there, you just need to look for it.  Here is a two month comparison. You can see that there have been some drops that can easily be reversed.

It’s really simple to get and keep these numbers up.  Watching his videos on Vevo and on his official you tube channel are all you have to do to raise the numbers. Typing David’s name into any search field and in any comment counts as a mention. Why worry about mentions? With every mention, his name is being counted on the internet, which raises his social status.

These are examples of things to do to increase David’s social status or popularity.

Wikipedia — Counted when a visitor loads an artist’s page.

Google – Google David Archuleta daily.

Twitter Mentions — Counted each time an artist’s Twitter handle (@davidarchie) is mentioned by another Twitter user.

Comment – Comment whenever David’s name appears in an article. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy. Just writing David Archuleta will suffice in getting the internet bots* to count him.

*(An Internet Bot is a software application that does repetitive and automated tasks in the Internet that would otherwise take humans a long time to do. The most common Internet bots are the spider bots which are used for web server analyses and file data gathering.)

Here are some David related links you can visit to increase his status. You can use these to listen, view and/or comment.

Lastly, please don’t stop sending David mail. I read on several missionary blogs that it’s common for the mail to slow way down after the sixth month. They say family and friends start to get used to them being gone and not part of their daily routine. David doesn’t just have family and friends but a whole lot of fans he wants to hear from. Why else set up an address for us?

David Archuleta
P. O. Box 4297
Apopka, FL 32704
USA

I hope you all can join me in my campaign to keep David’s name relevant during his absence.

David Archuleta’s Begin – A Dark Theme Keeps Me Here ~ I’ll Be Here DA2014

Posted by djafan on Saturday, August 18, 2012

Credit AnnieDAFG

A dark theme keeps me here,

Though summer blazes in the vireo’s eye.

Who would be half possessed

By his own nakedness?

Waking’s my care —

I’ll make a broken music, or I’ll die.

Ye littles, lie more close!

Make me, O Lord, a last, a simple thing

Time cannot overwhelm.

Once I transcended time:

A bud broke to a rose,

And I rose from a last diminishing.

I look down the far light

And I behold the dark side of a tree

Far down a billowing plain,

And when I look again,

It’s lost upon the night —

Night I embrace, a dear proximity

I stand by a low fire

Counting the wisps of flame, and I watch how

Light shifts upon the wall.

I bid stillness be still.

I see, in evening air,

How slowly dark comes down on what we do.

In Evening Air

Theodore Roethke (1908-63)

“Broken” wallpaper, original source unknown

A dark theme permeates David Archuleta’s new album, Begin., despite an interview with Deseret Book, in which he describes it as “easy listening.” To paraphrase a quote by novelist, Wallace Stegner, “Hard writing makes easy reading.” Begin. is to easy listening as hard writing is to easy reading. It is easy to listen to only because of all the hard work and talent that went into it. On this his fifth album his voice, including backup vocals which, as usual, are all him, never sounded better.

Yet conceptually, this is no easy listening album. Distilled into ten songs, one co-written by him and arguably the saddest, he takes on war, genocide, grief, murder, martyrdom, addiction, loneliness, desolation, despair, shame, low self-esteem, depression, bullying, suicide, poverty, homelessness, brutality, corruption and child abuse. That is a ponderous weight of sorrow contained in one brief body of work. Yet it is not, I think, so much a reflection of the darkness within himself, (though for a serious artist, this is essential) as a stubborn refusal to turn away from the harsher realities of life. Begin. is ultimately and overwhelmingly a message of hope.

David has repeatedly stated in interviews and in a video to his fans that these songs are clues to help them understand why he made the decision to go on a mission. He echoes this again in the liner notes: “Some people may not understand why I have made the decisions I have chosen to make, but that is the reason why I made this album…It really comes from my heart and I did my best to help you all know where I am coming from on my mission decision. While I can’t always [say] what I want to say using words, I hope that these songs will help you know.” David Archuleta

David sings of the lost and now he has gone to seek for them. Not as David Archuleta, the celebrity but as a humble servant of God who, in the name of love has sacrificed his all for what he believes: that we are all broke, flawed, imperfect, but we are not broken beyond repair.

We have only to Begin.

David Archuleta ~ BEGIN. Have A Favorite?

Posted by bebereader on Monday, August 13, 2012

BEGIN. It’s only a week that I have it in my possession and it’s already in my head, under my skin and coursing through my veins. I want to devour it, memorize the lyrics, phrasings and melodies until it becomes a part of me. I can’t get enough of this album. David’s vocals have a more mature sound on these songs that is very appealing. The more I listen, the more I crave and the more I crave, the more I listen. It’s fascinating, intoxicating and captivating. Last week, all ten were my favorites; I could not single any out that I liked more than the others. Now I notice that there are a few that are getting more plays on my IPod than others. My favorite is “Don’t Give Up”. I didn’t know this song existed before BEGIN. although I did sneak a peak on YouTube when I heard it was on the tracklist. It wasn’t a song that I fell in love with but I knew that would change once David got hold of it. I just didn’t realize how much I would love it! The depth and maturity in David’s delivery of this song shows how much he has grown as an artist.

So my top five are:

1. Don’t Give Up

2. Broken

3. Everybody Hurts

4. Somewhere Only We Know

5.  Angel

The one I keep avoiding is “Pride” but I know that will change because that’s the progression I go through with David’s music. I start out loving all the songs, then narrow it down to the ones I absolutely adore and the ones I avoid. Ultimately it goes back to loving each and every song.

What are your favorites and why? Can you pick one? Can you pick five? Do you find yourself skipping any of the songs? Let’s discuss.

David Archuleta ~ BEGIN.

Posted by djafan on Friday, July 13, 2012

THERE ARE JUST NO WORDS.

TXNancy said:

Remember this twitpic from Kari back in March? Now, we have 18 amazing seconds of David’s glorious voice, singing “Broken”! How can we go to sleep tonight? How can we wait 26 more days to have BEGIN. in our hands? I, for one, can hardly wait to read the liner notes, as I expect David’s words to be exceptionally heartfelt and emotional.
