POCATELLO — Pop star David Archuleta will perform at the Portneuf Health Trust Amphitheatre on Friday night.
The gates open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets for Friday’s performance can be purchased at smithstix.com.
Archuleta found his fame at age 16 when he was the runner-up on the seventh season of “American Idol.
Archuleta didn’t always have plans to become a music artist. Throughout his childhood, he wanted to be zookeeper, a dentist and even a social worker. Even though he kept changing his mind, he always knew that he wanted to connect to people in some way.
Obviously, Archuleta didn’t become a zookeeper or a social worker, but he was able to find a special way of interacting with others.
“Music is way to connect with people,” Archuleta said. “I’ve always wanted to connect with people, to tell stories and hear peoples stories, and I get to do that through writing songs.”
Last month, Archuleta released his latest EP, Orion. The Orion EP has four new songs that were inspired by events in his life that left an impression on him.
“This new music is basically written from my journey of the last several years of my life,” Archuleta said. “From becoming an artist and performing on ‘American Idol’ to touring and making albums to then doing a complete 180 turn by going to South America to be a missionary, I have this new perspective on life and I’ve written about it.”
Archuleta plans to release one more EP before he releases a full album later this year. By releasing two EPs, he is able to get a feel for how his fans will react to his new music.
“I want my fans to like the music, but I also want to see how they feel about the story and message,” Archuleta said. “I am trying to get a feel of how people will respond and react.”
When Archuleta isn’t touring and writing music, he admits to sometimes wasting too much time watching videos on YouTube like Studio C. He also loves to find new restaurants on Yelp and try them out with friends and family.
Since his run on “Idol,” Archuleta has released seven of his own albums including an appearance as a guest star on The Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s holiday album, “David Archuleta — Glad Christmas Tidings.”
“I seriously love food,” Archuleta said.
Archuleta is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and likes to show his fans all facets of his life from spiritual moments he has throughout the day to which new restaurant he recently tried out.
“My religion helps shape how I live my life and it helps give me so much fulfillment and happiness so I had to learn how to be open about all aspects of my life,” Archuleta said.
At his performance, Archuleta will perform a number of his older songs that fans will know along with some of his newer music. He will also throw in a few cover songs from famous artists throughout the last few decades.
“I want people to feel good when they listen to my music,” Archuleta said. “But I also want them to feel like they can connect to something deeper, like a deeper version of themselves and a deeper part of life. That’s really the purpose of this new music being released.”
David Archuleta is coming back to Idaho for a concert, featuring Nathan Pacheco.
They will be performing in Pocatello at the Portneuf Health Trust Amphitheatre on Friday, June 16 at 8 p.m.
On Wednesday, two days before the concert in Pocatello, he was enjoying his day off by traveling and resting at truck stops. For weeks, he said he has been practicing his songs on a daily basis with very few breaks.
Archuleta’s newest EP, Orion, was released on May 19, according to davidarchuleta.com. He said he plans to perform some well-known songs from his previous projects and old albums, songs from his new EP and a new song which has not been released yet.
“The song I’ll be singing that I haven’t released yet is a preview of what is yet to be released,” Archuleta said.
He said he is releasing his next EP within a month or so, then he is releasing an album later this year.
Archuleta said he wants to come closer to God through his tour, so he likes to start every concert and writing session with a prayer.
“I remember one time a (songwriter said) that with the twenty years (he’s) been in the business, (he’s) never started a writing session with a prayer,” Archuleta said. “He said that was special.”
He then asked the writer if he wanted to say a prayer to end the session. He said the writer said he did not think he knew how to pray. Archuleta said he told him to say what was in his heart.
“He bowed his head, and he just started talking to God and thanking Him,” Archuleta said. “Afterwards, he was like, ‘I have goosebumps.’”
One of Archuleta’s greatest motivations for creating his new music has been the experiences he has had over the past seven years of his life.
Archuleta said, “After coming back from my mission in Chile, I had such a new perspective on everything.”
Orion, in specific, is a showcase of the perspective he has gained over the years.
He said these new songs are full of things he wants people to know. He has hopes that his songs will inspire people to stay strong because there have been times when he has felt not good enough or not known how to move forward.
Archuleta said he thinks those at BYU-Idaho may feel like they are not good enough and that his songs from Orion will help students to remember their worth. Sometimes students feel pressured to be perfect and that they cannot show any weakness because Christ said to be perfect.
“Christ said to be whole, to be complete,” Archuleta said. “He didn’t say that you can’t be flawed.”
Archuleta said he is coming to Pocatello because he has been there before and enjoyed connecting with audience members of the southeastern Idaho region.
“I want people to leave feeling better and lighter—feeling better about themselves and feeling motivated to keep moving forward in life,” Archuleta said.
Archuleta’s first single “Crush,” debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart the week the singe released. Archuleta’s first album, “David Archuleta,” went gold, and sold more than 750,000 copies in the U.S. and more than 900,000 copies worldwide.
Three concerts and the release of “Numb” all in one week! Can we collectively scream “Yayyyyy!” Haha Been waiting for something, anything new from David. Hearing his voice on new material is like unwrapping a big box of chocolates. Warm, exciting and delicious.
Amazon is offering David’s single “Numb” as a pre-order purchase on November 4th. Have you heard the snippet yet? His voice is so crisp and beautiful and is it just me or do I detect a little Southern accent like a Nashville influence in his voice?

Rhiminee captured the lyrics to “Numb” below. Thanks Rhiminee!
I think I’ll take a second chance I won’t be passing by these waters again Wanna feel redemption’s hand See this life only for what it, what it is I know the river’s not too wide I can see it for myself with my own eyes Someone out there’s on my side It’s not my place to question why
CHORUS Everybody needs time away To wake up with the sun on their face I’m not there yet but i know That I don’t wanna feel numb Falling over all of my shadows Yeah I’m all done Cuz none of that ever really mattered It hurts to live so wide awake, oh But it’s a chance I can take I won’t run run run
Cuz I don’t wanna feel numb
So deep inside these hills I run To a place where I can see til Kingdom Come See the days one by one And love this life only for what it, what it is I hear the whispers in the stars The words that tell us more of who we are Someone out there’s not that far Everything I need is here now
REPEAT CHORUS
Yeahhhh
A time away brought to life Rushing over every doubt of mine Open soul open sky Everything, everything is right I don’t wanna feel numb Falling over all of my shadows Yeah I’m all done Cuz none of that ever really mattered It hurts to live so wide awake, oh But it’s a chance I can take I won’t run run run (x2)
This is what my voice looks like in wavelength form. Finishing up another vocal on another song. Wrote this one a while ago. It feels good when you finally finish things.
I had a strange reaction when David went to the trouble of making a video for the song “Glorious” and then gave the song away for free. The video represented what most fans consider a dream come true; David singing his heart out in the studio! I thought, ‘What is he doing? Is he sabotaging his career if he gives his talent away?’ But as the the views on YouTube climbed to hundreds of thousands and reached over a million, the light finally went on over my head.
This was a genius move. How better to jump-start his career than to hitch his wagon to a juggernaut of a song that is the centerpiece of a documentary movie? This move certainly got his name back in circulation in Utah and with his fans, some who may have stepped back when he left on a mission. Finally he had something to share with those who took the time to listen. It was a generous gift.
Next came the super cut video contest where David invited everyone to make a video of themselves singing “Glorious” to a music track that he provided.
This is where the whole thing evolved into the “song that could”. I have seen old and young, male and female, trios and duos, and choirs take to a microphone and record themselves singing. They sing in living rooms, stairwells and one was even on a road beside a corn field. Reading the descriptions below many of the videos, I could tell that this song had touched them deeply. It wasn’t just that David had asked them to sing; it was a desire to share their hearts with song.
What started out as a song to promote a documentary became something that touched generations of people worldwide. The main motivational ingredient was David Archuleta. He took a song and breathed life into it as only he can and made others want to listen to the lyrics and become inspired to sing it their way.
What I discovered by looking through the video playlist is that David’s fanbase is more diverse than I realized. At concerts there are mainly ladies and young teen girls. How nice it is to know there are men of all ages who proclaim their fandom! There is a silent majority out there who are fans. They show their support in ways that never occurred to me.
I see now that giving the song “Glorious” away for free was a master plan! A gift and an invitation from one heart to another. That’s the David I know best!
I cannot stop listening to the entries for the Sing-Along to Glorious contest. When I see one on Twitter, I am drawn to click. I envy anyone brave enough to submit an entry. There are so many talented people out there.
“Glorious” is an inspirational song that speaks to everyone, any gender, race, religion, age or profession. That, together with the lovely catchy melody, sung by David, makes this song a favorite among fans.
This quote from YouTube:
“It’s the kind of song that when you hear it it’s like it’s always existed, you just can’t quite remember where you first heard it…” ~Ivy Clinger
Tomorrow, November 3 is the last day to submit an entry. Good luck to everyone who entered. I don’t know how they will come up with a winner. They are all winners, for participating, in my opinion.
I thought we could use this space to post some of them; they are all worthy of sharing. Here are the links to two Twitter pages where you can find some entries. You don’t have to have a Twitter account to check them out.
When you find one you’d like to share in comments, click on the video and then click on the word “YouTube” in the lower right of the video box to get to the YouTube page. Then copy the URL on the top of the YouTube page and paste it right into your comment box. Do NOT click on playlists as there are too many steps to follow.
I see headphones, a guitar, a drum set and plaid shirts! David’s in the recording studio! Music to our ears! Literally. Stephanie Mabey is with him. That can only mean another glorious song! The excitement is building for what’s to come. And I’m hanging on for the ride!
