David Archuleta ~ We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Box

Posted by MT on Tuesday, February 15, 2011

A Guessing Game…

Fit David into a box?  Which box?

Is it a curse to be so talented?  It shouldn’t be, but it must make for some agonizing decisions on David’s part.  What direction should he go?   What direction will he go?  There are many differing opinions on this and I’m sure David has heard them all.  David is in the rare position of having devoted, loyal fans whose musical tastes vary widely.

We’ve all watched a multitude of videos with David performing various types of music and most of us have listened to almost every song he’s ever sung, at least those posted anywhere on the web.  David enjoys singing anything and everything but he appears to really love belting out a song.  It seems (to me) to be what he both enjoys most and does best.  Watch the Z100 performance of Elevator.  He really let loose on that one, taking it to a whole other level while performing it in their studio, and he looked like he had a ball doing it.

Most of us have seen videos of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert (though we weren’t really supposed to, insert embarrassed face here).  David was so in his element.  These performances gave his voice the opportunity to soar, to do what David does best.  It was brilliant, and the joy on his face was beyond anything I have seen on him to date.   Part of it was the type of music he was singing, but I believe another part of that joy came from having the opportunity to set his voice free.  I have to say again:  the joy on his face was just stunning. (See: Los Pastores a Belen & Silent Night – David Archuleta w/the MOTAB, it’s a MUST SEE, just gorgeous).   In that respect, one would think that David would want to sing ballads, yet they are noticeably absent on his latest album.

We have heard David imply, during an interview, that he knows what direction he intends to take, that he just didn’t want to shock people by jumping straight from his previous style into one so different.

What style?   Does he actually have a definite direction in mind?   Does he know what road he will eventually take?

David’s versatility is greatly discussed among the various sites.  His talent seems to be endless.   He is a musical sponge.   I believe he can sing, and sing well, almost any style he has ever listened to.  So, what is this musical genius to do?

Will he decide to do what he believes he sings best?  Will he choose the most popular?  Will he go with what he likes best, his own personal taste in music?  I would like to think that he shouldn’t have to choose.   He has the talent to do it all but has there ever been a singer who has done it all and succeeded?  There has been talk about the music industry trying something new, releasing digital singles rather than full albums.  Would this type of format help make it possible?

Only time will tell what David will decide to do so, for now it’s just a guessing game during a slow month in DavidLand.

With rumors of David returning to the recording studio let’s play, shall we?   And we can get to know each other a little more in the process.

Just for fun, let’s pick a box!

What kind of music did you listen to before David?  What is your personal preference in “non-David” music now?   What would YOU like to see David do next?
