Bluesky’s Luz De Las Naciones Adventure ~ David Archuleta

Mormon NewsroomCredit: Mormon Newsroom

I have been working pretty steadily with few breaks. Last Friday afternoon I raised my head from in front of my computer, looked around the room and said to myself: I could be at the conference center tonight listening to Spanish music and DA! This could happen!

Of course I had no tickets. I have not been on the receiving end of tickets for events at the conference center for quite a while. There are so many offered and so many apply, that the odds are just not really good. But I have always (so far!) been able to attend if I was willing to go standby. I was. Of course!

So I dressed warmly, got a bottle of water, climbed in the car and headed out to begin the 30 minute drive to SLC. It was just after 5 pm. I hoped to get there by 5.30 or so and be at the head of the standby line which begins to form (officially) at 6.00 pm. For Christmas concerts, I have seen the line 50 – 80 people long by 6.10 and I wanted to avoid being at the back. I had heard that there was a big turnout for the Thursday dress rehearsal.

I made good time and arrived at Temple Square, by the Tabernacle, where the line usually begins. There was no one there. I realized I had not eaten. Small item overlooked. It was cold. I had at least a 2-hour wait.  None of my sons could come with me – too short notice.  I did end up eating— I wandered across the street to the big mall and got (ha, ha!) a frozen yogurt with bananas and blueberries. And a spoon. I don’t think I need to tell you how cold I got eating frozen yogurt while standing in front of the Tabernacle waiting for the line to begin.

Dayzee would have been proud. I was at the front of the line.

It turned out that the attendance was less on Friday than it had been on Thursday and although the wait was long, there was no trouble getting in. I met some very lovely people while waiting and we ended up sitting right in the center balcony three rows back. Great seats!

I had heard from the ushers that the attendance on Thursday was upwards of 40,000 people. The conference center holds about 21,000 seats. They put the rest of the people into the Tabernacle which they had fixed up with large screens and everything. It looked like every effort was taken to support whoever wanted to come, but I wanted to be in the same building. Of course.

There was a bit of drama because the ushers did not want us waiting in the cold. So they sat us in the Tabernacle in the order we came. One lady kept saying how this was bad and how this had happened to her more than once and that she had missed out on concerts because of this.  Nope. Not. Going. To. Happen.  I felt certain that I was there to hear DA and all the music and that was how it was going to be.

The concert was more than I had ever imagined. They have held these Spanish language concerts before, but I had never gone because of the way they were advertised so I did not know what to expect. I felt somehow that I would be taking the place of someone else who was “officially” Latin. But this time the advertising said that all were welcome. That was good enough for me.

Oh my! The music was amazing! The bands, the musicians, were wonderful. I loved the little older man who played what looked like a harp but sounded more like a xylophone. Everyone was clapping, moving, joining in however they could. I lost track of how many countries were represented, each with their own music, dance, traditions, etc.

I loved watching the people around me. Almost all the people there seemed to be families sitting together, grandparents on down to young children.  The Dad’s, kids, and all would inch forward until they were on the edge of their seats, bouncing, swaying, and leaning towards one another like they were all trees enjoying the same spot of sun.

I had a good view of the family right in front of me. The Dad got so excited that he spent almost the entire program on the edge of his seat. The times he sat back? When DA sang. I thought at first – maybe he doesn’t know or like DA? But then I saw how he clapped. For DA it was solid, firm, appreciative in admiration. It was just that DA’s songs were more laid back than almost all the rest of the program.

When the different countries were represented, you would hear calls and whistles from different parts of the audience, like they were cheering for their home team or for some participants that they knew. The people I sat by were there to support friends who were playing in the orchestra. I don’t think they knew much about DA.

But by the end of the program, they did.  Every time he came on stage he filled the center. It is not him, himself. It is like this globe of love, kindness, energy, anticipation, a conduit from another place, that slowly invites all around to join in “his” space. We are gently gathered, released, enlivened, restored, comforted and…. sang to!

It was an absolutely lovely evening. I am so thankful for all the hard work, love, and talent that went into the whole program. Where can one get that sort of experience for free?

DA, thank you so much for just being you. For being willing to be more than you are. For being willing to share, learn, serve, and….. sing your blessed little heart out.

After listening to him sing “His Hands” in Spanish, I could not ask for a better ending for my long week.

I. Am. Grateful.

Bluesky, I love your post. For some reason it came up in my emails the other day on my phone. I thought it was so good I couldn’t wait to read it on my desktop. But it wasn’t here anywhere. I was confused about it all, but then forgot about it. And now here it is! Thank you! So glad that you went and of course, enjoyed yourself! David never fails.
Yes, there is something special about David. His singing is second to none but there is also his great personality and inner self that makes that makes him special. And for the fans to “get” his specialness is the best feeling in the world!

Bluesky, you are right! I am proud of you. Good for you getting out and getting to that performance. Great job! And thanks for the terrific sharing. Everything that I have seen from this conference has just been beautiful. good to see Nearer My God to Thee also. I had BYU’s Everybody Hurts playing all day today. It does make me hurt, but I cannot escape it.

I see Jan’s Royals took the first game of the series and are ahead mid-game tonight. I’m pretty sure she is happy.

Bluesky what an awesome re-cap! I love how you took me to this wonderful event via your amazing words! You had me freezing while you ate your frozen yogurt, fidgeting while waiting in the Tabernacle, and watching and listening with joy as the people around you swayed and listened, with rapture, to David sing. I’m so glad that you went!!!!

Jans…. congrats on your Royals! Hope tonight’s game doesn’t last as long as last night’s 🙂

Thanks so much for the recap! I particularly loved the part about the Dad sitting back to really listen to DA, and the enthusiastic applause.

    Jan,
You must be getting so excited about your Tuachan show! ♫ It’s getting closer now, closer now ♫ It’s a stunning venue. Add to that a stunning voice and you have a winning combination. I hope you and the others who are going have an AMAZING time!

    Jan,
That’s an interesting sports tidbit about 2 games in 1 day…. I’ll have to remember that one!

I haven’t started to zero in on St. George a whole lot yet…. got to get this weekend over with first. We are going to be in Idaho Falls again, but this time for a funeral. It’s for my very favorite aunt, but she was 92 and hadn’t been in good health for several years. It’s a blessing she could go, but it still leaves a hole in my heart. We will be taking my mom who is 86, and giving her the tour around her city since it will probably be the last time she makes it up there.

Now, as to St. George…. I’m planning on sunny but very cool weather. The highs, at this point, look to be in the mid to upper 50’s and the lows in the mid 30’s with low humidity. Yes sir, wear your warm woolly wear!! 🙂

And Tawna, so sorry to hear about your aunt, my condolences to you on your loss. 😦 I am being busy with Halloween and birthday parties this weekend, much better. Also, I checked the weather in St George and it was a tad better than your forecast. Fri-61/41,sunny and Sat-64/41,sunny…every little degree helps! 🙂

Tawna, have a safe trip to Idaho Falls. Nice that you can help your mom at this time.

Bluesky, I loved this thought ” It is not him, himself. It is like this globe of love, kindness, energy, anticipation, a conduit from another place, that slowly invites all around to join in “his” space. We are gently gathered, released, enlivened, restored, comforted and…. sang to!” Well conveyed explanation of David’s appeal. Thank ;you for writing.

So excited for the great gathering in St. George. So fun to spend time with my favorite people. And especially David.

The radio station that interviewed David posted the entire interview! I don’t have time to translate it all but he was asked about how he handles the attention, the love, and the fans. He like always said he’s not comfortable with all the attention but it’s the fans who motivate him to continue with his music, their interest in him and what he does. Just had to share that. Also, his Spanish is really good, his vocabulary is excellent. He speaks both languages in his same David style. Oh, he feels ready to enter the latin music and to connect with his heritage by recording in Spanish!!!!!! The interviewers were super impressed with his Spanish, his character and his incredible talent.

He is so fun to watch. David still David.

I apologize in advance for my bad grammar and possible wrong choice of words.

I little summary of the interview.

-He talks a little bit about his family background, that both mom and dad speak spanish and are related with music and dance.

-He said that he likes salsa music, he’s not a good dancer but he took some salsa lessons.

-They asked how he manages his career, the fans and all of that, he says he’s likes his privacy he doesn’t like being in the spotlight but he knows people can be inspired in a positive way through music, and all it’s worth it because of of that.

-About why he decided to go on a mission. Since his mom, grandma and aunts were influenced by missionaries back in Honduras he wanted to do the same. He sees his life today and the blessings and opportunities he has he wanted to give other people that same opportunities. Going on a mission changed his life forever. Now he can speak spanish and has a connection with latin people and he’s more inspired to sing in spanish.

-They asked how he made the decision to go on a mission. He says he had mixed opinions in his family. Many of them said that he was already on a mission, he was in a great position to influence people. People on his label said that he could do much more there than going on a mission of his church. It was a hard decision but he learned to listen to that inner voice that speaks to the heart (presenters say “beautiful words, beautiful words”). He didn’t know if people would wait for him, but he knew his life was on God’s hands. Presenter says he is impressed that he seems like an adult when he speaks and that he’s a very good expample for young people.

The next couple minutes are from the sneak peek we had from Kari.

-He talks about Jazzy going on her mission. Then invites people to go to the show.

Great to have so many nice people willing to spend their time helping us enjoy being David fans. I know for some of us (me) it is difficult to put into words what we want to say. I applaud Daniela for forging ahead even when unsure of the rules of grammar and words. We certainly would miss a lot if only the fluent writers wrote. Those gifts from the heart are appreciated.

Jan, I was lucky to have a big brother. He was like David in some ways, a good example to me and he always stood up for me. He was much older than me and my only sibling. He played the stand-up bass in dance bands all of his life, starting in jr. high. Often he would take me with him and I would sit backstage. The last time I saw him before he died at age 75 he was on the phone talking to someone about a gig. I was so excited to see the bass fiddle show up at David’s Twin Falls performance.

Next time it is Friday night I will be watching David with lots of friends. Yayyy!

    Reason for no longer recording::

    muldur says:

Hi everyone. I just wanted to clarify a couple of things. First of all my Numb video did get taken down due to a copyright claim by David. And while it was kind of embarrassing to read the claim coming from him, I am actually glad that he took that step as I think it’s a good thing he’s protecting his rights. And maybe the song is going to be released and that would be great. it’s an awesome song.

The reason I’m not going to record anymore is not directly because of that but it might have been the last straw. I have felt for some time that it’s not the right thing to do. Sometimes the venues out and out tell us not to yet I have done it anyway. Sometimes they don’t say anything and don’t act like they care but I think that David might. I am tired of feeling uncomfortable doing it, as much as I love to watch the videos myself and as much as I know how much others enjoy them. So I took down all of my videos from the Idaho Falls and BYU shows. I did not have any videos from Layton because absolutely without question David and the venue did not want anything recorded.

The fact is any recording is a violation of someone’s copyright including David and I don’t want to be in that position anymore. That is the primary reason why I will not record. I just wanted to clarify that.

So sad to hear that Mulder won’t be recording anymore. Her videos were always so good. A big thanks to her for all she has done for fans in the past and I understand her reasons for not recording anymore.

I was soooo looking forward to seeing videos of David singing in the mountains with that gorgeous backdrop at Tuachan. I hope we at least get some bits and pieces from others. Kari said parts are ok, just not the whole concert.

I’m guessing that means no periscope either? 😦 Oh man, I wish I was going to be there. But if I can’t enjoy it in person (or on video), I’ll look forward to the recaps telling us all about how fabulous it was hearing him sing with his voice echoing through the mountains with the gorgeous red rock cliffs in the background. 🙂

Mulder, I understand why you won’t be recording. It makes me sad that I won’t get to see any of the concerts, unless someone else sneaks a video in. I really wish that David would have his own people record the concerts and at the end of the tour, make a compilation DVD to sell. I would gladly buy one, and I’m sure a lot of others would too. I can’t make it to any of the concerts. I live in Louisville, KY, and they never come here, or anywhere close enough for me to drive. Videos are the only way I get to see him perform. They could make them as they are ordered, so they wouldn’t lose any money on them, and should make money. I’m sure even people who have gone to the concerts would buy a DVD to watch and remember the good time they had, and rewatch all those wonderful performances. Just a thought.

Nice puzzle Abs. A lot of black and a lot of challenge, but it’s always fun with David in it!

It’s not surprising that the videos were taken down and I agree with Mulder. Even though I would like to see videos of David in concert, this is his livelihood and it’s hard enough to make it in the music industry let alone having something you have worked hard to write and sing and then it’s all over the internet for people to steal and record. I’m talking about his new song “Numb”. Sounds like it might be a single and that is why they took it down. If there are videos of covers or any old songs I don’t see a problem, but with his new songs it does make a difference. jmo I have never taken videos, but usually take lots of photos. Depends on where I sit on how they turn out.

Lynella, I agree with you on them making dvd’s of the concerts. I know I would buy them. It would probably be better cost wise to mass produce them rather than by order. But I won’t hold my breath for any of that to be happening very soon. Sure hope he comes down to your neck of the woods some day as he is so great to hear live!

I’m sad to know that Muldur won’t be doing videoing anymore, but I know where she’s coming from. I’ve had those feelings before. I, too, hope that David will start to use his YouTube channel to promote his work. Either that or his agency and management start getting things out there promotion wise. My sister was asking me the other night if David’s new music was going to be pushed to be on the radio. Of course, I didn’t have an answer, but it was an interesting conversation. She’s just as befuddled as we all are as to why it doesn’t happen, and we are talking about main stream radio not just ‘Crush’ now and then and a couple of his religious tunes on the Sunday music stations. It would be so interesting to know how this all works.

    But… until then….

Yea, wonder what is up?? She’s favoring the word AMAZING!!!!!

The greater Kansas City area is still celebrating! Parade tomorrow, all the schools closed so everyone can go if they want. Will be televised so I’ll watch it. Have a dr appt anyway so couldn’t go anyway.

Hope the weather in the west there is better than what I seen on tv. Leaving 75* weather here to go to snow and cold is not too appealing. But seeing David is the main objective, so everything will work out! 🙂
