Knowing Your Truth ~ David Archuleta

sketches by @jPaleFOD
This is a partial drawing of David Archuleta by @jPaleFOD who posted it on Twitter. Even though it is unfinished, it gave me so much to think about. The Shakespeare quote, “The Eyes are the windows to your soul” came to mind, as the eyes are the most prominent feature in this sketch of David. Sketch: “a simply or hastily executed drawing or painting, especially a preliminary one, giving the essential features without the details.” (Definition by Dictionary.com.) I was also struck by the impression that this image could reveal or even represent where David is, in his journey back to a professional career.
Being away from the normal existence of family and friends can bring on a feeling of isolation. The rest of the world is absent in your day to day life. Even if you are in a place where you have a purpose, such as a mission for your faith, it can be difficult to feel a connection to what had meant the most to you before. Responsibility for guiding others on a path that you know well, but one that they may not grasp right away, can bring you into unfamiliar territory. Doubt is your constant companion. How do you get someone to believe as you believe when they do not yet have the same touchstones in faith? Are you equipped with adequate words to bring them into your fold? In the end, will you ever know if you made a difference in their lives?
Have you changed how you view the way things are? Your growth in all areas is a sign that you have learned some lessons about trusting your intuition. These are life lessons that come from experiences not taught by books, but by interacting with people whose actions need deciphering. You have gained the maturity to know who is on your side, and those who only want something from you. A life once lived in a bubble may not relate to a life now lived in harsh reality. You experience so much of life surrounding you that seems fake. Your craft could be the only thing you trust. It is the one true constant. Regardless of the isolation you now feel inside your craft, it sustains your creative nature. It is one of the things you trust to carry you forward in your life. There is no hesitation where music is concerned. You are a believer in the power and emotion that takes over your being when you sing.
Knowing your truth is the first step on your journey back to your true calling of music. You discovered that what you accomplished on your mission of faith is tied closely to your mission of music. It is the belief in yourself and the confidence of the powers of your craft that sustains you and will carry you forward. Using your voice to touch those willing to feel the emotion and be healed, is your Gift. Use it wisely David, and all your heartfelt dreams will be realized.

Abrra! This is beautiful!! I’m going to have to spend some time with it, I can tell, to really get it all, but this part is what stood out to me on the first read thru….. “Using your voice to touch those willing to feel the emotion and be healed, is your Gift. Use it wisely David, and all your heartfelt dreams will be realized.”
I read a thought today that really captured my thoughts for quite a while after reading it.
“Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
This thought, by Ralph Waldo Emerson, made me think deeply about how easy it is to take the path and just follow others. To do what we are told to do even if we don’t have any idea what is up ahead. It brought David to mind. I honestly think he is blazing his trails and opening them up for us to follow. He is sharing his Gift and I will gratefully accept it from him. His dreams, and their fulfillment, are my joys, also. I’ll follow his path, because I like where it leads me to. But, I also need to be willing to open my own trails now and then and see where they take me.

Wow, Abrra, how profound and interesting! While reading, my mind went in about 4 different directions. The main thing that I know is that David knows what he does for people with his voice. He has been told so many times. There is such a parallel in his life as a missionary and his life as a singer. He has helped people both ways and now that he is back to singing, he will stay here. Just has to go in intervals to get back to the life as he once knew it. I think with David being an introvert and so deep into his religion, it is taking longer to come back. David is one in a billion in every aspect of his life! 🙂 He has a precious soul and when he sings, we feel it with our hearts.
With me meeting Elders and now Sisters, I understand what David went through and I welcome them in my home. We have become good friends and some are even on my FB now. They are good, wonderful kids and we all worship the same God. All the kids I have met are more outgoing and extroverted than David.
From the previous post with David feeding the calf….it is so cute!! 🙂 He never fails to surprise me on what he’s going to say or do! That’s another great thing about David…he is so interesting, no matter what he does.

Abrra,
what a thoughtful post.Wow! Just beautiful !!!
It is quite the journey we have been on, these many years..
with David, without David, with Elder David, with a ‘new’ David we have yet to meet and witness on his OWN stage!
I can’t wait for that first comeback concert and whatever follows.Where it is all.. David Archuleta.
You made me think about what it will be like… for the man himself, when that happens♥
I love all you wrote, all of it, but especially your last paragraph.
Thank you Abrra♥

Abrra, similar to others this bit stood out to me…”Using your voice to touch those willing to feel the emotion..”
It got me thinking about all those people who hear David, say he’s got a great voice and then move on with their day. Perhaps the difference between those people and the Archie’s is that the Archie’s are willing to feel the emotion? I don’t know – just got me thinking about the mystery of fandom. Although I would also put it out there….as Archie’s are we also ‘hearing’ the emotion and not just listening?
Thanks for the food-for-thought. 🙂

Abrra,
Very nicely written piece. You have a beautiful way with words and I can tell it was written from your heart. ♥
I also agree with this part. “Using your voice to touch those willing to feel the emotion.” Not everyone is open to really listening and feeling the emotion in music and that is David’s specialty. Imparting the emotion he feels to his audience is a gift that enables us to share those feelings with him. Although I love his voice on anything and his voice really shines on heartfelt pieces, it’s his ability to make us feel what he’s feeling that makes me hope for some happy, upbeat songs as well. I hope there is a nice mix of both on his next album and at his shows.
Don’t get me wrong, uplifting, meaningful songs are great. But there’s a lot to be said for songs that just plain make you feel happy, too. They’re a great “mood lifter” and it’s those happy songs that tend to be on repeat in my car. 🙂

I love your article on where David is now and knowing his truth. We thought we were just getting a singer when most of us became fans after American Idol but we got so much more. He certainly is an introspective soul but that makes for good music and songs. That’s what keeps me patient and and sympathetic of that fact that he’s not ready to share what he has with us. He wants it to be to his liking. I know that it will be worth the wait.
MT,
I’m with you. I’m so ready for upbeat music I could taste it!
Bluesky,
Best wishes to you and your son as he recovers. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

There is a need for songs of hope, but those who need hope could often use moments of happiness, too. The fact that Pharrell’s video for Happy has racked up almost a billion views over the last year tells me that people are looking for music that’s clean and makes you feel good.
David could do that. I know he can. I hope he does. 🙂
Bluesky,
Thinking of you, too. Hoping your son is still doing well.

Tofan It’s the eyes that grabbed my attention and it kept nagging me until I put my thoughts into words.
Bebe I believe David will find the creative sweet spot in his writing. I don’t know when that will happen. I tend to think it’s more of an evolution. What he shares on his next CD might be the beginning of an entirely new direction. I’d love to hear a mix of genres. He has the depth to sing anything and make it work.
David tweeted lyrics of a Disney song.

Did anyone see the Disney movie, “Mulan”? If so, you may know the song David tweeted the lyrics from:
“I’ll Make A Man Out Of You”
Let’s get down to business
To defeat the Huns
Did they send me daughters when I asked for sons?
You’re the saddest bunch I ever met
But you can bet before we’re through
Mister, I’ll make a man out of you
Tranquil as a forest
But on fire within
Once you find your center
You are sure to win
You’re a spineless, pale, pathetic lot
And you haven’t got a clue
Somehow I’ll make a man out of you
I’m never gonna catch my breath
Say goodbye to those who knew me
Boy, was I a fool in school for cutting gym
This guy’s got ’em scared to death
Hope he doesn’t see right through me
Now I really wish that I knew how to swim
[Chorus:]
Be a man
We must be swift as a coursing river
Be a man
With all the force of a great typhoon
Be a man
With all the strength of a raging fire
Mysterious as the dark side of the moon
Time is racing toward us till the Huns arrive
Heed my every order and you might survive
You’re unsuited for the rage of war
So pack up, go home you’re through
How could I make a man out of you?
[repeat Chorus]

Perfect Date: It’s a political poll dance at the Desert Star’s ‘Into the Hoods’
This weekend, you’re a write-in candidate running for your sweetheart’s heart.
Desert Star Playhouse creates a political spin zone in its latest musical parody “Into the Hoods — A Fractured Fairy Tale” starring characters like Mitt Romney, Hillary Clinton and Utah’s David Archuleta.
There’s no debating this Perfect Date — it will cause a comedic reaction.
The former presidential candidate becomes a baker after a witch named Hillary Clinton curses him and he loses the 2012 election. To lift the curse in time to win the bid for the 2016 race, Mitt must venture into the “hoods” with his wife in order to collect the items needed to brew a potion for Mitt to end up in the White House.
Rapunzel, a long-lost Romney daughter, and her Prince Charming David Archuleta also join the quest for Mitt’s political salvation.
Mitt soon discovers he must learn how to relate to people to win the next election, and might not need the magic potion after all.
Get on the winning ballot and ignore the polls (you’re friends’ Facebook pages). Run on a platform of awesomeness and affection, and declare your running mate for this Perfect Date in Murray.
Tickets are $18.95 for adults. Showtimes are 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and at 2:30, 6, and 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. The playhouse is located at 4861 S. State St. in Murray. For more information, call (801) 266-2600 or visit desertstarplayhouse.com.

Dear Abrra…. well, if I had to guess, I would say DA is preparing for a concert. And…honestly? I do not really care if he views the music industry (with all the hype, critics, etc.) as the "Huns" or … well… me. ^_^
If, in preparation, he is aiming for: tranquil as a forest, but on fire within, finding and staying in the emotional whirlwind-y heart of his center, being swift (once he begins), hitting us with the force of a great typhoon, the strength of a raging fire, or mystery (THAT one he certainly has in as much quantity as any of the others!)… well, so be it. He will get no complaints from me.
And I love the part: "Heed my every order and you might survive." Yeah. I'm ready.

Abrra, a great message. Appreciate the depth of your thoughts. When I saw the top pic of David, I remembered him saying he felt like Natasha Bedingfield’s song Unwritten was about his life. “I am unfinished” And the line from Dream Sky High….”we’re all on our way”. It has been delightful to watch the story of David’s life unfold. And your title Knowing Your Truth is beautiful. I really don’t worry about David because I know he is a true warrior who can defeat the Huns or anything else that comes his way.
Thanks to Bebe for educating me on the Hun reference. I loved your phrase at #11 “we thought we were just getting a singer”. Haha. What we got was someone who could take over our lives and make us happy about it.
When I drove through northern Utah and southern Idaho I saw a tremendous number of new calves. If I had known David was keeping company with one I would have paid better attention.
Desert Star Playhouse is next door to my granddaughter’s home. Gotta get me there.

It will be his job to fill in the rest of his “life sketch” according to his personal timeline. I trust him to follow that voice that speaks to him that will lead him to realize his dreams.
#32 Bebe I got a big laugh after reading the time stamp on David’s tweet. He was up late on YOUR shift! LOL I liked the song. He seems to gravitate towards acoustic since he has been back. It’s all about the voice 🙂

Abrra, this article has seriously made me think about the unwritten, the unsung, the unknown part of David’s life. I like what you said in your response to bluesky, “It made me realize that what we fans hope for David and his career, is out of our hands. It will be his job to fill in the rest of his “life sketch” according to his personal timeline. I trust him to follow that voice that speaks to him that will lead him to realize his dreams.” That is so true. We must do, as David wants us to, what must be done to live our lives as we need to and let him do what he needs to. The links to his life (what he wants to share) will come one at a time. We can’t spend our precious time in a hovering mode, waiting for them. I find it so interesting that he has, pretty much, found the way he can be a celebrity and yet live his life, and I love it. (I’m thinking of the feeding the calf photo, and his latest tweet – looking for new music all on his own time)
Yes, I liked the song. I agree with the idea of him gravitating towards the acoustical side of things. Nice. It seems he is soaking in that Nashville feel of things. #alittlebitcountry #alittlebitrocknroll

I am hoping that a fan will use Periscope to stream some of his concerts to we who live so far away. Anyone who has an iPhone/iPad or Andriod can get the free app. It’s partnered with Twitter, So anyone you follow who “goes live” on Periscope will send a notification and you click your app and see what they are filming. I have enjoyed a few of Peter Hollens broadcasts. He invites you into his recording sessions, then asks the crowd watching which take they like best. Jeanette McCurdy does a lot of impromptu stuff such as have a chat session from her room or show something fun she sees at the moment like a street performer.
We have nothing but time, so if you want to add it to your phone or iPad it’s not that hard to figure out. The notification sounds like a bird tweet. Just tap and watch when you get one. It’s worth having and learning the ropes now, in case we get a shot at a stream in the fall.

Jan, Oh that’s awesome. Great that they work. And congratulations on having two graduate at the same time!

Oh man, that stinks that they’re selling David’s voice and he doesn’t get compensated in any way. What is wrong with people!

MT…. exactly!!! “What is wrong with people!”
It’s just like those ticket scalpers. In my head, I always hope that they get stuck with however many tickets they bought still in their hands when the concert starts. In my heart, I hope another fan gets to witness the concert.
Thank you for the puzzle Abrra!

Tawna, I know, right? I hope he makes them take it off iTunes. It’s just not fair.

MT,
Thanks for the “Mirrors” video! I never played the song when Justin Timberlake released it but with David’s voice on it, I really love it. I have to give him a lot of credit because it’s not an easy song to learn and sing. I remember in chat when Fenfan told us to watch Justin’s “Mirrors” video for his dance moves alone and how he handles himself onstage, practically dancing with the mic stand. How cool! I know Justin has years of experience over David but he can’t match David’s vocals. I can only imagine David performing “Mirrors” again, with a little more onstage experience with that mic stand. We’re in for an amazing performance in the next several years when he starts to really tour again.

I wish those clips were longer, in particular Hey Brother. Though that Everybody Hurts, hurts.

MT, that video at #60 is just all-around beautiful. Beautiful to look at, beautiful singing and as Dja says beautiful speaking voice. I enjoyed just watching David sit on a stool in command of a huge audience. More, please
Bebe, those amazing performances you speak of will surely begin soon.
Every time I scroll down this thread I have to stop at #34 and check out that whole arm behind his back.. His magical powers do not end with his voice.

#65 Dja,
That’s the song I usually listen to when I’m putting on my makeup. That, or Nunca Pense. I love that one, too. ♫ Oh uh, oh oh uh, oh oh uh, ooooh oh ♫ 🙂
#66 Dayzee,
We’ll have to add that to his long list of known talents.
