David Archuleta ~ American Idol Ending It’s Run

I wasn’t surprised when I read the news this morning that “American Idol” was ending it’s run after it’s fifteenth season, next year. Just a little melancholy because it signifies the end of an era and where I was first introduced to David Archuleta.
I know that there are people who still watch, even David fans. But I haven’t watched the show since Season 7 except in bits and pieces. I lost my faith in the show’s premise, to find the best singer. I mean, come on. Really??
picture credit courtesy of American Idol
The show declined in ratings after Simon left and I understand why. He’s as sharp as a tack at what he does and provided a lot of zingers and “did he really say that?” moments. But, in my opinion, there’s no excuse for degrading and belittling contestants for the sake of entertainment. It got old.
Apparently they are planning a big hurrah for the last season. I will watch but only to see glimpses of David.

I will always have a special love for that program. The seed of my change of life, grew up there, in 2008. Sometimes I look back and wonder what would have happened with my life if I had not met David ??
The person that I became, would have been possible without the intervention of David ??
Maybe I’ll never know, but one thing I am sure, now I feel safe myself.
David never know what he did for me, it does not matter much, the important thing is that I know, and I’ll be grateful all my life.

This will always be (along with just about everything he did) unforgettable. Long after AI is gone, DA will remain one of the best things that ever happened. They will be able to do the whole “15-year review” with only DA.

Interesting post, Bebe. I’m with you Gladys, 2008 was a turning point in my life and David was a big part of it. Don’t know where I would be if it were not for him. I love the ride that I have been on since his appearance on American Idol. I’m glad they haven’t changed the music because when I hear it, I still watch for anything David! 🙂 I still watch the show, probably from habit, because there sure hasn’t been anyone to compare to David. I actually compare every singer with him and they just can’t pass the test! 🙂 Since 2008, the show has lost it’s luster to me. Never could stand Simon and his rude remarks, even though I agreed with him 90% of the time, he was just too blunt. Those kids were nervous appearing in front of millions of people and they didn’t need to be in “boot camp” publicly! Good, constructive criticism is good, but not being put down rudely. And the way he threw David under the bus on The Ellen Show, I’ll never forget. That’s why I think he lost. That’s why I love to watch “The Voice”. The judges work with the contestants and that helps build their morals.
On the other hand, the judges on AI now are too gushy. Gosh, I can pick it apart with David not being on there. That’s what made it work, the year of 2008! What good memories! 🙂
And David has made so many more for me through the last 7 years, even meeting so many of you ladies at concerts. Dang, aren’t we the lucky ones! 🙂
In answer to Tawna from the previous thread…..would love to go to all of them, but I would have to move in with Dayzee for a couple of months!!! 🙂 Maybe we can meet up in SLC when I’m out there in Nov. I’m going to be there for a week or so. However long that Dayzee can put up with me! haha

Bebe, I too was not surprised at the announcement. I didn’t watch AI before Season 7, and I haven’t watched it since other than bits here and there. Between my daughter and a salesman at work, I was pushed into watching that season (I have thanked them since 🙂 ). Also, like many here, 2008 gave me a new outlook on many things. These are things that I would not have looked at had David Archuleta not ‘required’ me to follow his career. I’ve loved what’s happened because of it. It’s been so fun to be a part of so many of life’s events with all of you.
Jans, if you are staying in SLC with Dayzee, then the two of you, Bluesky, and I most definitely need to meet up for a session together. That would be AWESOME!!

Gladys, Where would we be? What would we be doing? I know the adventures, the symptoms of aging haha, oh so many things that I prayed about and low and behold God answered my prayers via finding something that not only connected me back to my love of music but also connected me with so many wonderful human beings that have enriched my life in more ways than I can’t count. David will never know but that doesn’t matter, he owes me nothing. His life is his to live as is mine is mine.
So fun that we will soon be meeting up with fans to celebrate David’s return to the stage!
Bebe, AI will be nostalgic for sure. Will see if they give me the “reason” I need in order to watch lol

David has pretty much made every list so far. I’ve not encountered anyone like him on any sing show or radio, nowhere.
11 of the most successful ‘American Idol’ contestants throughout the years!
Ever since he went on his Mormon mission, David Archuleta has not produced any music. However, prior to his religious service, Archuleta became an American sweetheart by becoming the youngest contestant on the seventh season of “American Idol.” With his childish charm, Archuleta then released the hit song “Crush,” which placed him at number two on the Billboard 200 chart in 2008.

End of an era! 5 reasons we’ll miss ‘American Idol’
TODAY Pop Culture
Admit it: There was a time when you watched “American Idol.” (And you obviously weren’t alone.)
At the very least, you probably tuned in for a bit in the ’00s, when, as the Nielsen champion, it also was No. 1 for conversation at the office water cooler. After Kelly Clarkson followed up her Season 1 win with chart-topping hits, millions tuned in to see if the next great pop star would emerge based on the voting tendencies of tweens with a little too much access to cellphones. It would be a nation divided by Ruben Studdard versus Clay Aiken, and, to a lesser extent, David Cook versus David Archuleta.

The End of ‘American Idol’: How Fox’s Singing Phenomenon Changed the Face of Pop Culture
But even the contestants who never found multi-platinum fame scored Grammy nominations (Ruben Studdard, Mandisa), hit singles (Phillip Phillips, Kris Allen, David Archuleta, David Cook), Broadway fame (Tamyra Gray, Diana DeGarmo), and, in the case of first season runner-up Justin Guarini, a second act as Lil’ Sweet, the confusingly hilarious new mascot in the Diet Dr Pepper commercial campaign.

‘American Idol’ is ending: Now what do I do?
Brian Mansfield, USA TODAY 4:29 p.m. EDT May 11, 2015
So I missed Seasons 1 through 3 — the surprising rise to stardom of Texas girl-next-door-type Kelly Clarkson; Ruben Studdard’s razor-thin margin of victory over Clay Aiken in Season 2, a much-contested showdown that would set the tone for regular future storylines of runners-up who should have won (just ask any Adam Lambert or David Archuleta fan); and a third year that introduced both future Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson and the show’s most famous awful singer, William Hung, but was eventually won by the diva-like vocal dramatics of Fantasia.

Billboard Top 100 ‘American Idol’ Hits of All Time
By Fred Bronson, Los Angeles | May 12, 2015 3:10 PM EDT
As “American Idol” starts coming to a close, here’s our countdown of “American Idol” alums’ biggest Hot 100 hits ever – and the untold stories behind the songs.
“Crush” – David Archuleta
Hot 100 Peak: No. 2 (2008)
Reviewing Archuleta’s debut single in Billboard, Chuck Taylor called it, “a hummable, age-appropriate midtempo pop ditty for the 17-year-old, showcasing his fine mass-appeal vocal stylings with creamy harmonies and some nice falsetto effects.” The single debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100, a thrill for the long-time fan of the charts, who admitted he became “obsessed” with “The Billboard Book of Number One Hits” and “Billboard’s Hottest Hot 100 Hits” when he was 13. “There was a point where I read the books so much, people would ask me what was the number one song of this year or what was the number one song on their birthday,” says Archuleta. “I discovered a lot of songs that way, songs I hadn’t heard before. I didn’t even know ‘One Sweet Day’ until I saw it in the book. It was No. 1 for 16 weeks. Those are very influential books to me.”

Djafan, thanks for all the links! Nice to see David mentioned in them! I didn’t watch season one. Only bits and pieces of two and three. Season four, five and six I paid a little more attention to. Then season seven and BAM, I voted like a crazy person for David Archuleta! I remember seeing him on the Jenny Jones Show and Star Search. It was so exciting to watch and hear him perform each week on Idol! Kinda sad the show is ending although I understand why. I boycotted season eight, nine and ten. (Mad about it after season sevens outcome, LOL) I thought I’d give the show that launched David’s career another shot. Season eleven til now I try and try to find even a wee bit of a “David” in the contestants. To no avail. There hasn’t been anyone that makes me “feel” each song they sing like David did and still does. I have enjoyed this ride and will always listen to him sing, whatever he chooses to sing. #lookingforMidwestDAConcert

Sounds like we are going to have some PARTIES! I am so much looking forward to spending party times with my David family. Jan, Bluesky and Tawna are a party. Expect to meet Gladys at Tuacahn and get together with DJA for sure. David is giving us opportunities for a good time. Hoping he includes cities more distant that will find us meeting with other fans. When his show schedule posted 4 days in a row (excluding Sunday) I thought he might have a long list of venues.
Dja, I fell off my chair at the quote you posted at #9. “Childish charm”? Really? When have we seen David childish? That was just too funny.
I wonder how David would have entered our lives if not for American Idol They say the cream always rises to the top and David is the creamiest singer I’ve heard. Do you think somehow we would still have become this group of diehard fans? Or would he still be hiding in the sound booth at Murray Park.
Thanks to Bluesky and Dja for the videos posted on this thread. They remind me why I enjoyed American Idol so much during that season. Two nights of every week when I could not miss the show. And always the big reward of watching David sing.

I am going to miss American Idol when it’s over. I like being able to watch a young artist grow in the competition. I do realize that its reality TV and there is much that goes on behind the scenes that affects what we see on the show. I can only form my opinion by what I see from the performances. This season it became very obvious who would go to the end. Clark Beckham and Jax looked like the final 2 until last night when Nick Fradiani won out in the voting, sending Jax home. It does feel like 2008 all over again. The rocker and the crooner are going to battle it out tonight for the win. They both did well last night, but Nick seemed to bring more showmanship to the stage over Clark. As it always does, it will come down to who has the most fan support in the voting.
I will miss the show.
Here are the final 2 singing their coronation songs.

Abrra. Oh, My, Gosh. I couldn’t even make it through more than halfway with either of them. *_*
Clark sounded a bit flat to me, and wooden, although I can see he is passionate, non of that seems to come out in his voice. It is like an exercise somehow. A vocal exercise.
Nick has a little more presence, but not much. He sounds to me like (who was it with the dreadlocks?) DA’s friend. Now he had trouble projecting, but still he was more present and more alive than either of these two.
Golly. There is something seriously wrong with their recruiting system. I know that there are better singers out there.
I wish them the best, but honestly, any of the top ten in DA’s season and many in other seasons, have a lot more chance than these fellows. Well, it is jus my opinion. Maybe a lot of their other performances were better than this. (sorry to be a downer!!!)

Not only has David won me over with his voice, but it has been so good meeting so many great fans. That is one of the reasons that makes it exciting to go to his concerts is getting together again with the friends we have made. And to get to meet the new ones we have made online. Parties! Oh, I like that word, Dayzee! 🙂
I never watched the first year of AI. Everyone was talking about Kelly Clarkson and I didn’t know who they were talking about. I made sure to watch it the next year and was disappointed with Clay losing. But, I kept watching every year not knowing what was going on in the background. Boy, did I find out in season 7 when David came on. There were so many things that was going on then, I felt like an old hen taking up for her chick! 🙂 I knew then that I would always be there for him and so far, so good! 🙂 I remember Dean Kaelin saying that “AI is another Reality show masquerading as a talent show.”
At the beginning of this season Clark and Jax was my favorites. But, both, to me, fell short of my expectations. Jax, when she started the “rock” scene with the dramatics. And, Clark when he started singing the very high notes {screaming in my book}. Never did like Adam Lambert for that reason. (jmo) I think Jax got in her mind that she was going to win and let it show. So, it boils down that another year it looks as if a white boy with guitar (wbwg) will win again! 🙂 A lot of tweets are favoring Nick. Maybe because of the stronger showing last night. His songs were better and that makes a big difference.
Today would have been my 54th anniversary if hubby was still here. Don’t seem possible that many years have went by! 🙂

The judges gave both of them a pass because the songs were written for them and they didn’t get a say in whether they could refuse to sing them. The other songs they sang were very well done.

Bluesky, I don’t anything about Nick. I had heard of Clark because of some tweets about how religious he is. I stopped watching season 7 lol
Dayzee, I know “childish charm” don’t think they ever watched any of David’s concerts.
Angelofdja, “There hasn’t been anyone that makes me “feel” each song they sing like David did and still does.” I watch The Voice for the entertainment factor because I think what David has only happens once in a lifetime and so far I’ve been proven right.

‘American Idol’ will live on long after the stage goes dark
Grammy winners Carrie Underwood and Clarkson — the two top-selling AI contestants ever, in that order — have both earned No. 1 albums with their latest projects. Meanwhile, Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson landed a role on Fox’s new musical hit show, Empire.
Having proved their live-vocal chops on the Idol stage, all three powerhouse singers routinely are asked to perform tributes on awards shows, year after year.
The critical and commercial success extends beyond those three prime examples.
Eleven other finalists each have sold at least 1 million albums: Chris Daughtry, Clay Aiken, Fantasia Barrino, Ruben Studdard, Scotty McCreery, Kellie Pickler, David Cook, Jordin Sparks, Phillip Phillips, David Archuleta and Adam Lambert.

Speaking of Weatbury, I will never forget the concert held there one December, (the one where so many pictures were taken of David and the band wearing Santa hats).
We were at the Halifax airport and a big snowstorm was taking place that should have had us not even leave home. We were told that possibly no planes were leaving to fly anywhere that day.. The gates were full of people waiting as the snow was falling now more heavily. It became a joke at security that we thought that we were going anywhere as the storm was widespread across the eastern seaboard.
One plane flew out that day, just one and it flew to New York.

TGIF folks! Where did the week go?
As far as American Idol goes I agree with MT too.
I will always be thankful to Idol for bringing David to us every week of season 7!!
I wonder if after it goes off we will get reruns, highlights, something akin to what they did for awhile a few years ago…was it “Idol Rewind”? Anyone remember?(There was some show for awhile anyway that showed past seasons though I never saw a rerun of any of season 7)
question for Ms DayzeeTawna,Bluesky … Did you guys know of David, before Idol? I mean like from contests, and any local tv station appearances, singing of the National anthem,or any other events he did when he was younger? Or in the church? Or Star Search covering the local phenom ♥?
Did any of you attend the Idol Homecoming Day for David? <<<and if so ,where DID you park? 🙂
Just curious.
33.
Jan," He. is. just. the. best. singer. ever!"
Dang.right.;) I too have been listening to David's songs from his AI performances ,while down and out a few days with a
viral infection this week, and there truly is just no one else who has ever been on the show that compares to David. He is the only one that has had the solid "IT' factor on that show.
When I have tuned in AI and hear other contestants do their rendition of songs that he sang on the show,I find myself wanting them to sing it right!! hahaha
There just isn't anyone that has ever come close to his delivery,or his uniquely beautiful voice.
Hope we get some news on more venues soon. I don't even know what 'soon' means anymore haha.
I am beginning to think the earth really is flat and D walked off the end of it.
Yoo hooo!? Hope you are doing well David!

Sky #59, I had heard of David before Idol through a vendor that came into where I worked. He kept some of us informed as to what was going on with Star Search. However, although I thought this 12-year old sounded really good, I never even watched the show. Then, when AI7 happened, the same vendor, and my daughter, convinced me to check it out. I did and the rest is history. However, I didn’t watch the auditions part. I came in around the top 12 time. I was a hard sell. I did not go to the Homecoming Day. I was on vacation, but ended up staying in bed in the motel room with the flu (fun times) so I was able to watch it on TV. So, long story (sorry) short, I didn’t catch up with David until partway thru AI7. I haven’t regretted, for one second, the time I’ve spent getting to know him since then. ♥ ♥
Sky, “Hope we get some news on more venues soon. I don’t even know what ‘soon’ means anymore haha.
I am beginning to think the earth really is flat and D walked off the end of it.Yoo hooo!? Hope you are doing well David!” Yeah, sometimes silence isn’t so golden. 😉

Sky, I had watched David on Star Search. Thought he was a cute little kid with a big voice. Didn’t watch Ai7 until halfway through. Thought he was great. Went past Murray High when he was doing the home show but wasn’t interested enough to buck the crowds. Went to see AI7 tour in Las Vegas on a whim. Completely lost my sense of reason. Told my granddaughter I was going to live in my car and follow David to all the AI concert tour dates. She refused to send me gas money.
Yes Dja. I have joined that club. When I spoke with a rep from the Idaho Falls Arts Council she was ecstatic with all the new members joining up to get David tickets. I am thinking we will still have to be lucky to get tickets.

Gladys – Your comment (#1) on where would you be if it were not for David. This got me to thinking. Following him has definitely been something very positive for me, not only because of the great talent and music he projects, but also secondary influences which I would probably not have enjoyed if it weren’t for his career. I have discovered other music, learned how to maneuver around the internet in that discovery, have interacted with people literally all over the world, and actually gained knowledge of technology, computer & otherwise, that has help me to discover all these things. Thank you, David. I have to say you and your career have certainly helped me to add layers to and broaden my life. 🙂 Thanks for letting me express this here.

I agree with you that being a fan of David has given the incentive to learn so much where technology is concerned. That is something I would never have thought possible 10 years ago. I continue to learn by helping out on this site.
the real bonus is having other fans to share all the excitement with when the new music arrives!
Thanks Jan. I saw that too.

Did you make that puzzle? I noticed the “The Voice” button at the bottom. If you did, great job! It was nicely done and challenging but fun. *two thumbs up* 🙂
Martha/Abrra,
I worked with computers for years before David so I didn’t learn too much in that regard, but I’ve certainly learned a lot about how the music industry works and what it takes to make it in today’s market. David introduced me to twitter, too. LOL So, that was new! I’ve also been introduced to lots of other music artists I would probably never heard of and I’m really enjoying that as well. So, yep, following David has been a learning experience for me, too.
It’s funny how life is like dominos, one thing leads to the next and you can’t be sure exactly where things will go. But I’m certainly enjoying the journey. It’s been a fun ride so far and it’s not over yet. 🙂

Did any of you attend the Idol Homecoming Day for David? <<<and if so ,where DID you park? 🙂
Just curious."
Hey there!
No. I had never heard of DA. In fact my son Joey had to make me sit down at the computer (youtube) and listen. Right there at my desk. I was NOT interested. I did not watch Idol. I did not want to hear a 'mormon' singer who was "so cute". Joey is one of those to whom it is very difficult to say "no". And you don't want to say no to your teens anyway when they are really excited about something and they want to share.
So, I sat. While Joey fiddled with my computer. My arms were firmly folded, my back up against my chair. My face "well, I am here".
I think I kept that face and pose pretty consistently throughout the whole performance. (I think it was "Imagine" but I do not really remember.) What I was NOT able to do was ignore the goosebumps rolling up and down my arms, nor the near tears behind my eyes.
That was all. That was it. Joey has never let me forget it.
I did go and see the AI in SLC, but my mother was in her last two weeks of life and I did not do much else. It was a sweetly difficult time. I was exhausted. I did not go to anything else. But I loved the weekly shows and voted like someones life depended on it.
Never voted before, and never since. ^_^
Thanks for the puzzle!!

Abrra, we love the Sunday puzzles. When I was vacationing in the wilderness I tried to do them on my phone, but for 2 Sundays in a row I was unable to complete them. That little phone screen was just not working for me., As soon as I had access to my son’s computer I pulled them up. For some reason his mouse would not let go of the pieces. Once you picked up a piece it was attached to the mouse forever. It was good to get home.

We are all connected somehow and because of David this happened for me. Why him? I don’t know but I believe it was meant to be.
SB,
I’ve watched The Voice sense the beginning, it is a very entertaining show without all the drama of AI. Though I do wonder how some of these contestants would have handled true pressures of the Idol machine and with Simon giving them some true criticisms. Because as much as I enjoy the show no one is ever given a true evaluation of their weak performances, even screw ups are turned into something to be praised lol But it’s fun to watch 🙂

Oh thank you Lynnella. the song choices sound exciting!!. I am certain that I will love Neil Young’s ‘Old Man’. What a hit it was and now forever a classic. I ,love “Summer Breeze”, so much like their characters.I have heard about some songs for tomorrow night. I will have to look them up again. The stars for the finale sound exciting as well.
I have enjoyed all of the coaches but for now I can say that I have enjoyed Pharrell. I found that at least while Simon was there, the shock value in humiliating the singers had NO boundaries. He was extremely arrogant, sarcastic and narcissistic. What a combination. He ridiculed and lowered the self esteem of the singers in front of millions of people. I never cared for him at all. The show had some bad motives. On The Voice, the criticisms are dealt with in the studio with the coach and the singer. If someone was not that aspiring then they would not be voted back but the humiliation factor was 0…Ellen DeGeneres? JLos’s goosies? Far too many!
I sincerely wish that David had been discovered to us on that show as they would have loved him respectfully.
Sawyer’s voice is changing and getting tired sometimes with so many interviews. I keep thinking, ‘voice rest!!!’

Yes to everything you said, I completely agree. Which is why I wondered how these singers would fare under that type of insane and unjust pressure, not that I agree with it one bit. It was visible when David was being affected by the all the nonsense he had to endure. Yet, he sang like no other week after week, incredible talent, courage, and character.

I sent you the file. I had trouble at first and got invalid code error. Then I went back a few minutes later and it took the code. It’s a glitchy process for sure. That’s the reason I decided to offer help here.
The techie explanation 🙂
Some virus protection software will block the java script that controls the code authentication, hence the error. If you ever have a problem like that, disable the virus protection and get your file, then re enable the protection.
Off to work I go. I’ll check in later today.

DA’s simplicity is so deceptive that one is almost fooled into thinking that the hush following the music is not filled with the echo of a thousand angel voices, and that the warmth they now sense is only a slight change of temperature in the room, not a complete encompassing of eternal love.

“Popular Mormon violinist Lindsey Stirling played at the Billboard Music Awards. She joined artists Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth to perform the number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, “See You Again.” The song is a touching tribute to actor (and Mormon) Paul Walker, the star of the Fast and Furious films, who was killed in a tragic car accident last year. The song with its message of family and death has skyrocketed up the charts this year.”
I haven’t seen any of the FF films. And I did not know that Paul Walker was LDS. I was drawn to this article by the mention of Lindsey Stirling and the Billboard Music Awards. I remember how taken DA was with everything to do with Billboard.Plus, there is Lindsey to enjoy!! A win for sure!! ^_^
So I watched and was prepared to really enjoy the performance. Hum. Well. I like Lindsey and I like her here. The fellow who was rapping was good I am sure, however — he, and the singer, and then Lindsey… To my eye it seemed like they did not look at each other much. That is, the rapper did not (in the video) look at Lindsey and the singer looked at neither of the others. So although the song is great, the performance did not seem to carry the emotional appeal that it could have. It could be that the singer was just emotional and had a hard time with the higher notes, I do not know.
But….. (here it comes!!) I could not help but compare that to how it might have sounded with DA singing it. He not only can deliver a great song like that with an emotional-power-wallop the size of Texas, but he just naturally “combines” with others and draws them into his musical realm – if they will come – of course.
So, one day, DA, I would love for you to be invited to perform at the Billboard awards. (Lindsey was nominated for an award, I am sure that is one big reason she was invited to perform.) I would love to see you alone or in collaboration or whatever. Till then…. waiting for fall and hoping other venues open up for all the hungry little hearts everywhere around the world.

I watched the Billboard Awards on Saturday night. Whenever I watch an award show I always imagine David receiving an award. His voice is incomparable and I can’t wait for it to be recognized as such by the industry for the great talent he is.
The “See You Again” performance bothered me a little too. Although I loved Lindsey Stirling’s violin playing, I wasn’t thrilled with the singers as they made the song sound disjointed, like they weren’t singing the same song at the same time. Djafan reminded me that one of the contestants on The Voice last season, Chris Jamison sang “See You Again” with Wiz Khalifa. That’s where I heard the song the first time but I enjoyed the performance a lot more than the one at the Billboards. David would kill the song. Would love to see him sing this or something similar, with a current sound.
