David Archuleta ~ The Memories Are Still Alive by Gladys
Posted by bebereader on Tuesday, April 21, 2015
I chose “The Memories Are Still Alive” as the title of this article because I feel this is the central theme of the song. But I don’t understand why David didn’t sing this line in the live version, because it expresses the title.
We know David will be David and if he changes or omits lyrics there is a reason. I listened to the song more than ten times to transcribe it word for word and to try to understand it’s literal significance. We know David is not a singer of love songs without a reason; everything that has the feel of his voice has a real significance. And this is not a love song.
The first time I heard the song I thought he was talking about something superior to him or about a person that was no longer with him. I was wrong. David was speaking of himself, of the David from before. I suppose that all human beings look for the same balance in life and David is no exception. It seems important to him to balance the David from before and the David from now. It’s impossible to leave behind and forget all that he was because all of that enriched what he is now, an adult with a set goal.
Even though a voice says “I hadn’t noticed the emptiness that was in me” that voice speaks to him of a past, a past that he is trying to overcome. In the last interview in Mexico he said they would tell him “the fame, the money, the recognition, everyone screaming, we love you David, that that was love”. But something told him that that wasn’t so. Trying to reconcile that part of his life with the David now, according to him has been a tough job but he is achieving it. Maybe like in the music video, the black and white images little by little turn to color and transform the actual person. Maybe David is doing this with his life, taking things from the David from before like the first verse in the song said “Stories run through my mind that I learned from you”, and balancing them with everything that is happening now.
We will always have the David from before, jumping and dancing and telling us anecdotes of his travels joining the new David which I am discovering every day. He is so young with a full life ahead of him and due to the recent news, also full of songs. In the video we see a person who is renewing his love for the guitar. Is David trying to tell us something? Whatever it is I will be there in the first row because my memories are still alive.

Nunca Pensé by David Archuleta
Solo, no me has dejado, aunque un tiempo me perdĆ.

Thanks to Gladys and Bebe for a great article! Love your take on the words to Nunca Pense. I never thought about David writing about himself, the ‘past’ David and the ‘now’ David. Very interesting. Since it was written for Roots Tech, I put the words with the video and it matched perfectly. Telling a story of a guy and his ancestors.
Either way, I’ll still say the man’s a genious and deserves a grammy for this video! When is America going to wake up! People might think he’s just a dumb little kid, but “still waters run deep!’
I was disappointed when the audience didn’t clap for David when he was explaining about writing the song. Every time I watch it, I expect a burst of applause and everytime…nothing. I love the song, the video and fact that David wrote it! And in Spanish! I probably would have been clapping by myself! š

Gladys,
Thanks for an interesting article! I hadn’t thought of it that way. Whether it’s our ancestors or our past selves, it’s all a part of the tapestry of our lives. The culture of our ancestors and events in our own past make us the person we are. Each thing we hear, see, feel, experience is woven into that tapestry and becomes a part of us. It changes us and creates a new “us” every day.
I love Nunca Pense. It’s both beautiful and fun! š

Gladys, I didn’t even notice David didn’t sing those verses in the live version. I love your take on things, the angle in which your observe is unique.
“It seems important to him to balance the David from before and the David from now. Itās impossible to leave behind and forget all that he was because all of that enriched what he is now, an adult with a set goal.”
After listening to his interviews and his speech this really stands out to me. I truly believe that David trying to achieve this balance is the transition we’re experiencing as fans.
And this:
“Maybe like in the music video, the black and white images little by little turn to color and transform the actual person. Maybe David is doing this with his life, taking things from the David from before like the first verse in the song said āStories run through my mind that I learned from youā, and balancing them with everything that is happening now.”
Beautifully said Gladys. Thank you.
We decided to include the original Spanish words for David’s Latinos š And the lyrics so we can practice singing Nunca Pense for when the time comes we’ll be ready.

Gladys,
Your analysis of the song “Nunca Pense” got me thinking about how David likes to tell a story with a message in every song he sings. In this one he does it by switching from one era to another as the main character realizes that his ancestor is very much like him. Brilliant idea to show that concept through frames of a music video! Very enjoyable and very catchy tune! Whoever thought the story out in frames is a genius!
It was my pleasure to work on this project. Djafan and I live on opposite coasts with a three-hour difference in time between us and all of our translating and transcription was done over the phone. Amazing times we live in!

Sandybeaches9 – Thank you so much for that. I really enjoyed hearing it. One thing Sawyer has in common with David is humility. He’s such a humble kid. Also, family seems to be really important to him. I noticed when he was singing on this clip, usually you see him sing, but I never really heard him sing without the video before. His voice is very deep and rich. There at the end, I felt the emotion in his voice and started getting teary. I hope this time, as opposed to when David was on Amer. Idol, the right person wins. I agree with the interviewer, even if Sawyer doesn’t win, he will get a recording contract. Pharrell will see to that. This show is so far superior to Amer. Idol. They actually get the advice they need to make their performances better. Thanks again for the cilp.
Gladys, very interesting article. You are a deep thinker. In a way we’re all the product of not only our past, but the past of all of our ancestors. Thanks for pointing out that idea about David trying to reconcile the person he was with the person he is. Sometimes that’s a difficult thing to do. I hope we all give him the time and space he needs to get it done.

Lynnella, as a 16 year old he did a mature interview. He also said he is an introvert which has been a subject before. well not about him rhiugh. He is very sure of himself. If he loses I would guess that his age would be the reason but he already has a career. Yes very humble. He was invited by the pro guest coaches to come and join them to come and make music. A very high honor.

#21 – I loved hearing Ryan Tedder’s comments. I remember when David sang Apologize with he and his band, One Republic. I would love to know how he feels about the comparisons of the maturity of the two of them. Their voices are like apples and oranges, but they have a whole lot in common in the way they both know what they want and how to achieve it. I wish, instead of there being an orchestra behind Sawyer, there was just maybe a drum and a cello, or piano and cello like David had when he sang Do you hear what I hear. I felt like all the strings overpowered Sawyer somewhat. I heard him trying to get them to trim it back, but I guess someone else wanted a production number. That Do you hear what I hear was perfect. It was enough music to be meaningful, but allowed David’s voice to soar above it. That’s what Sawyer needs.
Maybe I should tweet Pharrell (lol).

Hi everyone,
As some of you may remember, I was quite upset with David’s Easter tweets. I felt better after the symposium because he clearly and bravely stated his viewpoint and I posted how I was feeling here. I have felt uncomfortable since then, as I feel I need to add that I don’t agree with David’s viewpoint of marriage and it does affect how I feel about him as a person and as a performer. (If I want it to or not).
I think there is a great discussion going on at Soul David that I hope you take the time to read, and to possibly add your two cents.
It is obvious Many people, including me, care a great deal about David, and yet,,,,, There is certainly never a dull moment.

A while back, I asked you to put down your thoughts about Nunca Pense. Because you are from a culture more closely attuned to what we see in the video, I had hoped you could shine some light on some of the nuances of the story about a young man finding his future by looking into his past.
You wrote:
“Trying to reconcile that part of his life with the David now, according to him has been a tough job but he is achieving it. Maybe like in the music video, the black and white images little by little turn to color and transform the actual person. ”
I agree with you here. When David came back from Chile, I saw a man who looked nothing like the boy who left 2 years before. He told us in no uncertain terms how things would no longer be as before. David has learned from the mistakes of his past. He will stand by his own decisions and not be a puppet on a string for the music industry as was the case when he was younger.
Poof #33
I agree with you on the topic of marriage for anyone, regardless of their sexual orientation. However, I cannot agree that meaningful discussion goes on (at the site you mentioned) where David is used as a punching bag because he has a mind of his own.

Please send prayers for those affected by the Calbuco volcano in Chile. Thinking of you Gladys and hoping that the wind does not carry ash to your area.
Two eruptions blasted forth from Chile’s Calbuco volcano for the first time in more than 42 years on Wednesday, creating a remarkable scene of smoke plumes and ash shooting more than 6 miles into the sky. Calbuco had another spectacular outburst early Thursday with lightning crackling through a dark sky turned reddish orange by the explosion.
Ensenada, in the foothills of the volcano, looked like a ghost town Thursday, but for an occasional horse or dog roaming its only street. Most of the 1,500 residents had evacuated after the initial eruption Wednesday, with only about 30 people refusing to leave out of worry for their homes and animals, The Associated Press reported.
The height of the volcanic ash emitted triggered concerns that the dust could contaminate water, trigger respiratory illnesses and halt more flights. No injuries have been reported.
The first blast surprised Chilean emergency officials, who were left with only minutes to issue an alert.
“People went into a state of panic,” said Miguel Silva Diaz, an engineer who lives in Puerto Montt, a city about 14 miles from the volcano. “Then, at around 1 a.m., I heard a loud noise, as if somebody had detonated an atomic bomb.”
Parts of Argentina reported heavy ash falling after the eruption. According to analysis by Argentina’s meteorological service, the ash cloud was shot as high as 40,000 feet.

We’re pretty laid back here. No admin here has deleted a post because of someone’s thoughts. All of us are on site daily and love the interaction and vibe here. We welcome all comments posted in a respectful manner. So I can only surmise that that because we are actually a fan site that supports David’s career, we may be considered unfriendly to those who wish to bash said career. WordPress offers FREE space to create a web site to expound on any topic one wishes to explore. Yet I don’t see anyone taking that offer up to point out all the flaws in David. It’s sad to me that some choose to berate David on what was once a fan site.

Since the golden sustenance of DA’s music only nourishes in me the desire to live, to have hope, to heal, to love, to dream, to look for the good in others, to face life’s challenges with courage and honesty, to avoid judging, and to do good to all, then, for me, I know all I need to know.
DA has not asked me to believe exactly as he does about anything before I have the privilege to hear him pour out his passion in song. That, is simply a gift from God.
————
One of the blessings of artistry, is that the viewer/listener can see themselves – their own story – their own interpretation – within the art. Because DA is such a shiny individual, I may get the mistaken impression that I can “see through” him, or that I have the right to try. While learning about the life of an artist can bring me deeper understanding of their works (as I just recently discovered with Prokofiev), still, that road to deeper understanding is inevitably carved within my own heart, and the landscapes framing it will be of my own making.
It’s all about the music.

While we read about people questioning David’s career direction, it seems to be without question his direction is to work with the church people towards strengthening the participation and devotion of the youth, therefore strengthening the church. It is a constant struggle to inspire the youth as they leave home to go and stay in that exact direction and David is working out just great as we know how likeable he is to every age. He is a wonderful example of a missionary of the church staying with the religion after they are home. David’s new cd will be a welcome addition offering new music to his future events and if there is music in Spanish then his plans have been awhile in the making. Anyway, this is life as we know it but sometimes forget! Performing in a few places will keep him known or keep him current so it is important for him to sing at a few regular concerts.
In one year things will be different again, they always are as nothing stays the same. I will always remember infamous Andrea Bocelli’s biography stating he was born in 1958 and his career in singing took off in 1992 at the age of 34 when he put his career as a lawyer aside. He had been always involved in music throughout his earlier life. So for those youthful people, David has a lot of time to be in and experience different places
Music to some of us is a big part of our lives and always has been. I became involved at the age of five so it does get embedded into your head and heart and even into your soul. Speaking of soul, did I mention yet Sawyer Fredericks?? Hmm, yes I think so. Remember its oranges compared to apples! I am looking forward to David’s Spanish songs too!

Sandybeaches you’ve done it again. You’ve managed to draw me into a Sawyer discussion (lol). Really doesn’t take much. I’ll just say this one thing. I figured out what it is about his voice that attracts me. He has a soul type of voice, as do many others, but his has a mournful, pleading sound to it that just grabs your heart. You want to cry for him or with him. Sometimes I feel like he’s on the verge of tears and it just gets to me. It’s like the old time country singers I remember hearing my parents listen to on the radio. Back then, I didn’t get it, but now I do. I think that’s what Pharrell was trying to describe when he auditioned. Pharrell’s just not old enough to have heard those people. Neither is Sawyer, unless he’s looked them up on youtube or somewhere. I don’t know how he knows how to sing like that, but it sure is clicking with a lot of people. I know of at least 2 DA fans who’ve been smitten. Not taking anything away from David. My heart is big enough for 2.

Thank you for your concern, but unfortunately some ashes have come to the city of Buenos Aires.
Buenos Aires is far from the volcano, but the intensity of eruptions is large.
The volcano is still erupting and several cities in the center of my country have been evacuated, Buenos Aires now has clean air, the ash has only affected some places, we are all fine, I’m fine, thank you.
The Calbuco volcano remains unstable, active, there is a red alert, and many fear that has little explosions of lava. The flights have been suspended for now.
There is an alert for new eruptions.

This is for Sandybeaches, Jan11, MT, Bluesky:
Saw this on Sawyer’s twitter. Some of his fans made him a video. Reminds me of something David’s fans do. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this young (16 yr. old) man, His name is Sawyer Fredericks and he is the frontrunner on The Voice on NBC. He’s sweet, innocent, shy, humble and very talented. No wonder David fans are drawn to him. Here’s the video:

Just noticed the picture of David on the right lower corner next to Sawyer.
Do you think Sawyer is copying David’s style. Spooky.

59…another natural disaster. omgosh. I keep thinking of the man from Nepal that was featured in MTM. Hope he is all right. Thoughts and prayers go out to all the people there and in Chile.
58… seen the audio on FB and he sounds so grown up and sure of himself from the way he used to talk. I guess he is š
Lynella, thanks for the fan video. Yep it is something just like the Archies would do for David. I love to hear Sawyer sing and would buy his albums. He is such a personable young man, just like David! I look forward to seeing him on Mon and Tues nights and vote for him. The last ones are all good singers, but I hope Sawyer wins. That blonde (forgot her name) with Blake is the one I don’t want to win. She’s good, but she ought to be since her band used to sing with Blake. She has the edge being on stage before and I don’t think that’s fair!
26…I didn’t know that Mark Ballas sang, but I know he can dance!

Thank you for the John Denver “Sunshine On My Shoulders” video. It led to an hour in youtube where I found other gems by one of my all-time favorite singers.
Gladys,
So happy to hear you are okay! You’re the first person I thought of when I heard the news. A friend of mine has family in Argentina too. Hoping to hear that they are okay too. Prayers for the safety of all those affected.

The fan video is a great one! The Voice show only has a few more weeks to go and I don’t believe there is an OS for the young fellow yet. All in due time. Come over to my house on Monday night! Oh that’s right we are probably thousands of miles apart, unfortunate! Well I will be thinking about you all anyway! Please put in a vote for me!! Seriously. š

@DavidArchie Weād love to see you again at BYU-Idaho! Your UVU speech/singing were excellent and inspiring. 17,000 students here to inspire.
LOL You know it’s way past time for a David tour when people are tweeting the number of people available to be inspired.
Hey David? The deep south needs some inspiration. Just sayin’ š

Won’t it be university touring? I think that the general fan tours are a thing of the past for awhile or until someone says differently and the interest changes. I think that my passport may expire…Anyway, inspiration is the topic and he is right on with that. His age group probably needs all that they can be given. A better youth does mean a better world. Heaven knows this generation has failed, the world seems to be crashing with problems.

Well, I was gone all evening, Abs, but I answered your question by phone and it’s not here. So here it is….yup! You are so right! š
And Joe’s Pub kind of place would be perfect for David and all of us cousins being all cozy at our meeting there! š

#75 Joe’s Pub would be a good venue for David’s concerts in NYC. I’ve been there several times and I like it because the position of the tables, (even though very close together as you can see in the picture above) create an intimate atmosphere where the artist isn’t too far away from the audience. There are Joe’s Pubs all over the US.

Oliveoil, will this ever be a better place? What everyone would hope for.
Sneaking this in under the radar…SF blew me away. Another wonderful inspiration for today’s youth as he sang to them. He mentioned someone up above in yet another song.
I must watch the news now for the latest on Nepal. It is sometimes difficult to hold your head up high when you feel so sad for so many.

I got a gift in the mail today from a wonderful woman who sings in the MoTab choir that I have become friends with. She sent me the DVD of Meet the Mormons. There’s a segment filmed in Nepal. What a beautiful country. I can’t imagine how awful the devastation must be. I’ve seen pictures on the news and on line, but it’s still hard to imagine that it’s real. The man in the movie from Nepal is okay. I saw it on another website.
The Meet the Mormons movie has some special features and one of them is David talking about how he was contacted to sing Glorious for the movie. They show video of him recording in Chile. He said the clip in the movie was what he recorded in Chile, but the video was done in the U.S.
Sandybeaches, I would love to comment on SF, but I don’t want to upset anyone. If you would like to contact me, I’d be happy to email with you to talk about it, but I don’t feel comfortable saying anything else about him on this site.

More importantly, in keeping a site intact and favourable is keeping the friends who throughout the years became one of the biggest parts of the whole David scenario including the site. I have greatly missed the many people who were daily commenters but are now gone so that speaks volumes. This is not a place about one amazing singer or one opinion but about the people who were a part of it all and shared in making the whole experience so memorable.

I don’t understand how you can say that about David’s intentions. Especially after we have some new tour dates announced. We are a fan site and as such our intent is to promote his career and share any news with fans as it becomes available.

I just went thru the ‘purchasing tickets to a David Archuleta Concert’ panic!!! š š Unfortunately I had to settle for general admission as the reserved seating was all sold, other than a few singles. Most likely to the season ticket holders for the amphitheater. Oh well, I will be in the same latitude and longitude (sort of) as the one whose voice makes me happy!! Guess I’ll be finding out what it’s like to stand in line for when the gates open (clears throat), I’ve never had to do that before. This should be interesting because my hubby will be with me. Maybe he will act as my bodyguard. š
I’m excited to see other states opening up. Dear hubby wanted to go to Idaho Falls and not Layton, do you think I can persuade him to do both? Probably. He’s a pretty nice guy. š
Abrra, I love this fan site. I love being able to see, hear, laugh about, and learn all things David. But, I also love that we can spill some personal things now and then and we have worldwide friends that will listen to us with open hearts. ā„ ā„

Congrats on your tour tickets! Wear sneakers for the rush to the front. I suggest you and hubby practice before the show. Ha! I love that we have an international compliment of fans. Just look at who wrote the current article š Even though I refer to Gladys as my sis, I do consider all the fans as members of my David family.
My thoughts on David’s strategy is to take it slow and do a few shows out west to bank some cash so that he will be able to move around the country and remain profitable and not end up in debt. There isn’t really any rush. He doesn’t have to answer to anyone but himself.

I have that MTM DVD. I got it for the special features where David is interviewed. I liked hearing his story about Glorious. The version of the song he did in Chile is quite different in that there are added harmonies. It’s s nice sound, but I think David made the right decision to re record the song here. That one has less production and puts his pure voice up front.

Hello all!
I’ll be changing the thread shortly but wanted to say that I hope to be able to continue to make this a favorable David fan site. I believe the artist and you the fans that comment are what make it special. We’ve celebrated not only the ups and downs of David but of all of us here too. We’ve prayed, laughed, mourned, supported each other at one time or another. I know we don’t always agree on what David is doing or not doing but that shouldn’t affect what we do here or the friendships that have developed over the years.
Lynnella, I purchased MTM from Amazon as a digital download and darn the extra David clips weren’t included! But it was a very well done documentary of people who are striving to live there life as best as they can while staying true to their beliefs, nothing wrong with that IMO.
SB, First of all, for anyone here that hasn’t meant SB let me tell you she is one of the kindest, most gentle, smart, funny, and witty human beings I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. I’ve hung out with her at several David events. It saddens me that David isn’t meeting your expectations and I feel some unhappiness towards him in your tone but they are your feelings and we’re all entitled to how we feel. I hope that as the year unfolds you’ll be pleased with the outcome of his plans.
