The Center for Constitutional Studies at Utah Valley University will host on Wednesday, April 15, an imposing lineup of distinguished religious studies and constitutional scholars, former U.S. Supreme Court law clerks, multidenominational contributors, and a finale program featuring popular musical performer David Archuleta as part of its dynamic Spring Constitutional Symposium on Religious Freedom.
“Some of the most important constitutional issues currently facing the nation involve religious freedom. If one wishes to learn more about how recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions will affect the religious freedom of individuals, businesses and religious organizations, then they will want to attend this academic symposium,” said Rick A. Griffin, director of the Center for Constitutional Studies. “Moreover, the evening finale will include a combination of remarks and musical performances that will add to the overall richness of the symposium.”
The symposium will begin with the opening keynote address,“The Quest for a Moral Presidency: Jimmy Carter, Progressive Evangelicalism and the Religious Right,” given by one of the most prominent presidential and religious scholars in the nation, Randall Balmer, the chair of the Department of Religion at Dartmouth College. Prior to this position, Balmer taught American religious history at Columbia University and was a visiting professor at such prestigious universities as Princeton, Yale, and Northwestern. He is perhaps best known, however, for his book “God in the White House.” Balmer’s remarks at the symposium will be based on his newest book, “Redeemer: The Life of Jimmy Carter.” The address will begin at 10 a.m. in the Lakeview Room of the Library.
A distinguished afternoon panel featuring Balmer; UVU President Matthew S. Holland; Douglas Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law at Pepperdine University; and Gene Schaerr, a prominent constitutional law attorney who provided counsel on the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993, will examine what role, if any, presidents should play in religious matters, with particular focuses on the views of presidents Thomas Jefferson, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. The panel will begin at 1 p.m. in the Library Auditorium.
From 3 to 5 p.m., a panel composed of Hannah Smith, former law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas and senior counsel at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty; Matthew Franck, director of the Center on Religion and the Constitution at the Witherspoon Institute; Nathan Oman, professor of law at the College of William and Mary; and Alexander Dushku, a member of the Kirton McConkie law firm, will discuss recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions pertaining to the religious freedom of individuals, businesses and religious organizations. The panel will be held in the Library Auditorium.
The symposium finale will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the UCCU Center and will provide a vibrant program of final remarks and musical performances. “Because freedom of religion is a freedom shared by all Americans and because music has been such a powerful medium of religious expression, vibrating through the pages of our nation’s political and constitutional history, the center was especially interested in including a prominent musical guest speaker,” said Griffin. “We are excited to have popular singer and songwriter David Archuleta as the finale’s featured speaker and musical performer.”
As a former “American Idol”runner-up and member of America’s demanding music industry, Archuleta will share via word and song his unique life experience and provide insight into how religious freedom has impacted his life and career as an international musical performer. The finale will also include contributions by Kmiec, former U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Malta, and the popular Calvary Baptist Choir of Salt Lake City.
Admission to the symposium is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Free tickets for the morning and afternoon sessions are available at uvu.edu/ccs/events, or by calling 801-863-5470. Free tickets for the finale program featuring David Archuleta and the other contributors are available at 801-863-7469 or 801-863-7474, the UCCU Center ticket office, Campus Connection, or at CCS in suite 305 of the UVU Library.

Show the judges what you’ve got! Perform, present, make a winning pitch. But ignore the Simon Cowells; focus on your fans. Love blooms near April21. Could there be a proposal, pregnancy or other excitement in your romance novel? hahaha 🙂 the last part is so NOT David!! 🙂

Although it will all be good I am guessing, he seems to be headed towards exactly where he wants to be.

My son had the power go out in his home early last night. He called this morning to say it is still not on. And it is snowing again. ^_^
About 7600 homes are without power all around various parts of Utah. In my sons family they have a little three month old. They had quite a night. But they are good! (Actually, they are amazing… But who am I to brag?!!)
Good news… That number of outages does not seem to include the counties around the UVU.
Never thought I would be one who was doing a weather report around a DA performance. So… You never know, Lynnella! For you, I hope it is a full concert. And that you are sitting next to “eightrowcenter”.

I hope they let you take vids with your phones. I want to hear the singing, I can read the notes, but that voice just can’t be relayed any other way. You lucky ducks.
I’m praying for the power to come back on all over Utah, wherever it’s out. Gotta keep all the little babies warm.

Bebereader… no, we will leave in about an hour and a half. Maybe Dayzee does tweets on her phone? I have a really old phone. My sons made me do it. They bought it for me. *_* They know I hate it. ^_^
I teach online, I do FB for my business online, I sell online and have my .com for my business, I write manuals and charts that I use online, I create videos to share….. I even have a vital connection with my iPad (like almost grafted to my hand). But I refuse to give up my right to NOT be called on the phone when I am not at home… except by my kids. ^_^
I know, I am weird. But happy!
So… I will take my iPad and keep notes. Maybe take a pic or two. (it does not have a great camera, though)
For you guys, I will do what I can. Just because I love you. ^_^

ReCap (bluesky style):
Bigger. Better. Bolder.
Buckling up will do no good. All seats will jettison – airlifting hearts to new flights of blessed reality. A reality brighter than you knew and at the same time, the beloved home you always craved.
~~~~~~~
Dayzee will tell you that I tried to do video but my poor little iPad simply did not have enough memory. *_* Well, I have never tried to film anything that long before, so it was a learning experience.
I just want to say that it is my firm belief that any qualms anyone has had about songs, genres, et al. No. Worries.
Watch the whole speech when it comes. (it has to… wish I had been able to get it all). Listen to the songs.
He is back. But is more than he ever was: deeper, stronger, a man on course. With talent pouring out of every nuance, sound, breath, action, deed.
Basically…..that’s it.
(and Dayzee is amazing. ^_^)
Just FYI: although the venue was at a University, the topic was ….kinda not something youngers are going to say: “wow! that sounds like fun, let’s go!” Maybe because of interest. It was great. I loved hearing the different viewpoints that I did get to hear. (not being able to get to the whole day)
And… just 20 min. or so before it began, I asked an usher how many people they were expecting – it still seemed kind of sparse to me. She told me that they expected about 2000, but that the ticket numbers were 4500. She thought the snow would make a big difference. I concurred.
But then… in just 30 more minutes the whole place filled up. I am sure there were upwards of 3000 there. And…. from my view, it looked like 80% were people the same age as DA. And they LOVED him. They were obviously there to see him. And they would not bring HIM out until he was due to go on. They knew that once he came out, no one would pay any attention to anyone else.
The audience… most all of them his contemporaries or just about…. watched for him all the time. They were constantly looking for “when is he coming out?” Even though no one said his name. And after he spoke and sang his last song – complete standing ovation. Complete. I am telling you – us olders were most certainly outnumbered. And although everyone was very kind and just treated us in grand style, you could plainly see that they consider DA t.h.e.i.r.s.
Can’t begin to tell you how proud I am of him.
Bluesky, sounds like David was doing what he does best… being himself and shining that little light of his.
Too, funny about the youngers and the olders. 🙂 They just don’t understand that we olders have been around the block a few more times and know what we know and what we want, and no one can take that away from us. And we.want.David too. We’re willing to share, we really are. And, don’t tell them this, but we are constantly looking for “when is he coming out?”, also. #didijustgiveawayasecret
Djafan… do you hear the phrasing there? He was literally “speaking”. He was using every musical nuance, skill, breath, and intent to “talk to us”. Talk as only DA can when he sings. With all that directional “energy” he mentioned in his speech.
I had my iPad trained on him the whole time, but it would not stay “on”, it kept clicking off and I only got 8 seconds here and there, and then 30 seconds of the ending (which you now have here).
If we can’t locate the whole thing – just may be the physics of the whole experience: he was on fire, and the tech simply couldn’t keep up. *_*
For those of you going to Tuacan: seat belts will do you no good. ^_^
What an unforgettable night it was listening to David last night. I wanted to share how it went after the show……….After the show was over, storms of girls holding their camera phones (including me, lol) sorrounded the stage where David was shaking hands and saying thank yous, before walking off the stage he looked at the girls, walked over and shook some of our hands (including me) as security was telling him he had to leave. I looked at girls around me, some of them were literally crying. Then security escorted David to his green room as girls ran beside him, screaming “I love you David, Marry me!” You would think it was Justin Beiber or something…but even better, it was our David. He still has it and my love for him grows stronger by the day 🙂 🙂
This is great and I definitely love the man he brought back. He may be about 5’6″ on the outside, but he is HUGE on the inside. The Bible says that God looks on the heart, David is a giant.
Now I know what Bluesky meant in her recap last night when she referred to “a reality brighter than you knew and at the same time, the beloved home you always craved.” and “…deeper, stronger, a man on course. With talent pouring out of every nuance, sound, breath, action, deed.”
David’s maturity is more evident now; his breath of thought has greatly improved and his speech is more fluid than it used to be. I’m so impressed because public speaking hasn’t been his forte but seems like he has mastered it anyway. He’s such an inspiration to me as someone who realizes his shortcomings and works at improving them by facing his fears. Makes me think I can do the same.
Whatever your religion is, good values are good values. I just know that he got through to his audience, of all ages.
Amen. (can I get an “Amen”?) I’ll bite: Amen. ^_^
(Can’t tell you how many guys – there with their girl friends – were just as “where IS he?” as the rest of them. All ages. All there for him. You gotta know that is why they never even mentioned him by name until just before he went on: the applause would have been a dead give away. ((Although, to be fair, the audience was great – they were very supportive and generous in their applause for both other musical numbers. They clapped and cheered along with the Baptist Choir – who were very good – and they loved the native American dancers as well. The announcer was just careful to refer to DA only as: various musical numbers tonight, until his set was announced. Good Call.)) ^_^ )
I was so nervous yesterday preparing for an evening with David. Mastering snowy roads, finding Bluesky in an area I was unfamiliar with, reaching the venue on time, parking, finding the right place to be. I was so antsy I found myself at Bluesky’s home half an hour early. After listening to my profuse apologies, she responded as if it was perfectly ok to interrupt her getting ready. As if she did not think I was that babbling idiot that I was. Everything went smoothly and we were finally parked and looking for the official entry. Why do I worry? I am always afraid something horrible will happen and carefully laid plans will fall through.
There were no people visible outside the building. It was 5:30 and the doors were to be unlocked at 6:30. We decided to walk over to Will Call (always open) and find a restroom. After a nice young man took us through tunnels we were told to take the elevator up to the restroom. While waiting for the elevator I heard piano. Was that Be Still My Soul? Then that heavenly voice floated into the hallway. The elevator came. And went.
After recovering, we asked a fellow wearing the “Im here to help you” jacket where we should wait. Bluesky charmed him into feeling responsible for getting us to the best seats available. He unlocked doors and pointed the way. and told us to find the front row. Did not need to tell us twice. The first five rows were for VIP from the college, then a gap to the front of the rest of the seating. So we were on the front row behind VIP. And we were there for an hour and a half before the program began. Thank you Bluesky and Jacket fellow. Lupe, Claudia and other family were five rows in front of us on the real front row. Nice to see the family support.
When David appeared the crowd was deafening. A great welcome. When David went to the microphone to sing the first number, he gave us a puckish grin and started out “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas”. At that point the entire audience was completely his. He went on to sing He Lives in You. So there I was taking the most pitiful video ever. One of the best frames showed the size 12 bright red Converse shoes of my neighbor. Somehow I was able to keep the camera somewhere in David’s direction when my screen told me NO more videoing because I had run out of storage. David was at that point in the song where he absolutely becomes awesome and shakes the rafters. Crap! The video above at #59 ends in the same place. Hoping someone will find the ending of that song.
When David was speaking I could not find the rambling man anywhere. His thoughts were concise and to the point. He laid himself out for all to see and hear. There were a few moments when I thought someone should get him a kleenex. He does not hold back his emotions. Gosh I love this guy.
The crowd showed their appreciation with a standing ovation. The room was all David. A line formed to shake David’s hand (or get a hug) but security sent them packing. In a nice way.
There is nothing like the feelings that engulf you after a David concert. Warm and fuzzy,yet electric and intense. All emotions combine to make me useless.
Can’t wait til next time.
Yes Tater. We are lucky fans
Dayzee,
Thank you! So much I love about your recap. ♥ These are just a few of the highlights for me and bear repeating …
1. Why do I worry? I am always afraid something horrible will happen and carefully laid plans will fall through. ( I totally sympathize there!)
2. Bluesky charmed him into feeling responsible for getting us to the best seats available. & the “Did not need to tell us twice.” (haha I can picture it! And yay for front row!)
3. When David appeared the crowd was deafening. ( 😀 😀 )
4. At that point the entire audience was completely his. ( Again, big smiles! 😀 😀 )
5. David was at that point in the song where he absolutely becomes awesome and shakes the rafters. Crap! (That last word totally cracked me up. And I can sympathize with that too because that’s pretty much what I said, out loud, when the above video cut out. LOL)
I can’t thank you and Bluesky enough for sharing your experience, and how you felt, with those of us who couldn’t be there. ♥
Why do we worry?! I don’t think we will ever have the solution to that. It will always be that way for me. I’m the one who worries about all the unseen ‘what if this’s and that’s’. What if we get lost, what if there are construction delays, what if the parking is horrible and it takes forever to find a spot, what if……. . So, I just plan to get there early and hang out. I sure would have loved to hang out with you two last night!!
Tater… yes, lucky is what we are. Fans forever we will be! ♥
While I was busy posting tweets here last night I missed a whole bunch of emails from Bluesky about the show, some sent before and some sent during. A few even had pictures! I apologize for not seeing them sooner. Some might be repetitious as she has posted so many details already!
Here they are, in the order in which they were received.
“Good Morning Utah”
Dayzee, are those your car keys? Cool!
“We see blue skies! It looks like we may be having safe weather for going home later. Whew! And…. We are almost there.”
“We are here and where we are there is no line. A very nice gentleman let us inside and told us that with a little luck we could end up on the front row. We hope he knows what he is talking about. I offered Dayzee a granola bar, but she said she is too nervous to eat. She drove down here like she knew right where she wanted to go. She is a pro!! We got here and we were in the basement waiting for a “very slow elevator” and guess what? We heard this amazing voice. It sounded vaguely like some one we know. Dayzee insisted that we sacrifice the elevator (which finally came) and stand in the hallway (getting a few strange looks from the girls who knew we were waiting for the elevator) a just listen. Can you see why I just think she is amazing? She sent you a clip of what we heard.”
“We have good seats. Fifth row behind some reserved seats. Not many people here, but the weather has been terrible. *_* We will see what happens in the next few. ^_^ Dayzee is breathing easier.”
“So,I just asked an usher about how many they expect. She said they expected about 2000, but they “sold” about 4500 tickets. She thinks that the weather has really affected the numbers.”
Yes, those are Dayzees car keys! I took treats cause I had not had time for dinner (working on the computer!). Dayzee needed no treats however, DA was sufficient for her!!!!
It snowed all day long until just 5 minutes before we left. We were very lucky to have clean roads. Yea!
She was so cute.
I finally had a chance to listen to David tonight.
“Love thy neighbor as thyself.”
In plain english David told us his beliefs. He didn’t shy away from talking about the ramifications of his Easter tweet. He was his kind, sincere self. His message of love one another, support one another was clear.
I don’t need to turn in my angel wings. 🙂
Special hugs to Dayzee & Bluesky for sharing your ‘night with David’….loved every word. To all who tweeted and took pics last night, you made us feel like we were with you. Through his sincere, beautiful, thoughtful, courageous words & singing so wonderfully & gloriously, David shared so much of himself, so many blessings that his Heavenly Father has bestowed on him. How blessed we are to have nights, like last night, to treasure, all because of David!
Thanks TXNancy & Djafan!
Now. Now I feel like I am finally home from the event. Now I feel like I can emotionally kick my shoes off and breath.
Now I can say, “See?!!?”.
Bigger. Better. Bolder.
In every way: speech, maturity, courage, focus, expression, &……well, delivery.
If I wanted a job wringing my hands over DA, I would be unemployed.
Just sayin’.
Poof, Big hands, big feet, big heart and a super big voice! That’s our David!
Him getting into the songs he sings is what draws us to him! Yes. Bigger, Better, Bolder! Nothing is stopping him now!
Love all the “before” photos. I had a David key chain, but lost it on New Year’s Eve. When I got home the photo had slipped out of the little frame. My daughter said they found the other side of the frame but there wasn’t any photo of David. I said that someone probably found it and kept it! 🙂
72 Poof: nope. ^_^
They are your own wings my dear Poof. Your very own. Like the song says, “He lives in you.” That which you hold dear in him, lives in your own heart. That was his message to us in his talk: to have faith, to have courage, to believe and act on the good in ourselves and in others – whoever they may be.
He just used his own journey as an example. Our own journey is all we have to offer. But because there is a greater light (I believe this!), when we share what is our own, the best we know, the undying light within each of us illuminates the world.
(((((((Big hug)))))))
Good morning, all!! Bluesky, ” That was his message to us in his talk: to have faith, to have courage, to believe and act on the good in ourselves and in others – whoever they may be.” Thank you. I need that thought today. ♥
We, (hubby & I) went to see “Les Miserables” at a local theatre last night, and we were blown away by the skill level of the whole performance. I always wonder if he is enjoying it as much as I am because he just sits there and applauds when everyone else does. But, afterwards when he went up to ‘Jean Valjean’ and thanked him for a great performance, I knew he had enjoyed it. In fact, he talked about it all the way home. Of course, I constantly had in the back of my mind that this was David’s jumping point, as far as recognizing his musical desire. And…. “Bring Him Home” …. yeah! It was interesting, because as the play was in the final scene with Valjean and Cosette, I noticed that the actor was very teary eyed and figured he was into his role all the way. Then during the last number with the whole cast, his tears flowed freely (of course mine then did too). Outside when they were greeting the guests, I heard him say that for some reason his ‘waterworks turned on tonight’ and he’s never had that happen before. He was really into character. I never get tired of this theatrical play.
Anyway, wishing you all a great Friday! And I’m still working to get a big enough chunk of time to sit and listen to David’s presentation. Ugghh! Real life can be too needy at times! 🙂
I sincerely hope that David can finally move on now that he has expressed himself. Hopefully now he will surround himself with good people and move forward with satisfaction. Truly a time of honest confessions for the world to see. I hope that he plans to not be fake for years with his new fan base. That is a sad thought that I have to remember but he has told the truth and truth is all we need to know…A few of Keats words mixed in there.
