David Archuleta Mission Return: One Year Later
by Kristin, Guest Writer for The Voice
Today, March 24th marks at least one year since David has returned from serving his two-year mission. Like everyone else, I was so happy to see him back and thankful he got back to his family safely.
It’s amazing how much time flies sometimes. From heading or transferring to a new college, weddings, graduations, birthdays, whatever else may have happened to all of us in the past year, we aren’t the same as we were prior.
For me, 2014 was a difficult year. Lost weight, lost my cat, a second episode of depression…so much heartache and pain. David being back didn’t seem to alleviate all of my struggles, but it gave me a distraction from everything for a while.
Regardless of those struggles, none of us are the same since David came back a year ago. Some of us have stayed to wait it out; some of us have left or moved on for whatever reason. Some of us chose to believe and have faith when, to others, it just seemed impossible.
I’ve been reflecting the past few days as I write this. Having my spring break last week and taking some initiative with where I wanted to go in my life, I’ve seen how much I’ve grown and changed in the past year. I am definitely not the broken girl who had hit rock bottom with her faith and with everything around her a year ago. Just like David has grown, adjusted, and taken time to reconnect with himself, with his life. Not just his life, but his music, what he wants to say to his fans in that music, what he wants to say to the world…and what he wants to say for himself.
At times we got frustrated with him; I’ve had my moments too. Other times, we were excited for him, wondering about where he would take his career next after being away for two years. We worried about if he’s changed so much since those two years away, and if, due to his silence, if he even still wanted a career.
Well, I know one thing from what I’ve observed of David.
He doesn’t give up so easily.
In today’s music industry where we have—people who shall remain nameless—we need people like David to give us hope in good people, to make us feel good and inspired, and also to give us a chance to grow and change from what we learn from him or learn about ourselves.
I know, for me, and people who know me probably know this part of the story, but David was my light in a dark place. That unexpected/unanswered prayer who…
…switched something on in me again. Lit up something in me again that was snuffed out prematurely.
For a lot of us, life changed the very first time we saw David. For me, it took him going away for two years to make me really take a step back and realize what I was truly blessed with, what God placed in my life when I didn’t even ask for it.
A young man around my age, shy like me, who just wanted to do what he loved to help people. Someone that actually cared about the platform he was given, someone who wasn’t afraid to stand up for what mattered to him, and someone who was willing to take a step back himself with his life, and learn something he had to learn in order to move forward.
I’ve been afraid of disappointment, of being let down. Some people have thought that of David during the past year, and I can understand. When going through my personal demons, I struggled with my connection with David, letting other people bother me and letting doubts run my life…
…until I realized enough was enough.
Now, on this March 24th, I am still Kristin. I haven’t changed that much, but I’ve been healing. Taking it one day at a time with myself and with what David plans to do with his career and music next. The news last night of an announced concert has gotten us all hopeful again, excited for the future.
For me…it feels so close in this battle of personal doubts and fears from the past five years, trying to gain the courage to finally see, for myself, a man who has been such a gift in my life, who made me wake up and see where I was and the potential I have to do good, just as he has even before becoming famous.
To look him in the eyes and say, “You got me through the toughest years of my life.”
To hug him, have a picture with him, and see for myself that this has been worth it all this time.
Just as David is worth it…and was worth waiting for, and fighting for.

Kristin, I felt your heart. Thank you.
“I know, for me, and people who know me probably know this part of the story, but David was my light in a dark place. That unexpected/unanswered prayer which…switched something on in me again. Lit up something in me again that was snuffed out prematurely.”
I know exactly what you mean, exactly 🙂
“A young man around my age, shy like me, who just wanted to do what he loved to help people. Someone that actually cared about the platform he was given, someone who wasn’t afraid to stand up for what mattered to him, and someone who was willing to take a step back himself with his life, and learn something he had to learn in order to move forward.”
The courage it takes for those more mature like me is incredible let alone you young folk who our future depends on. I continue to be impressed.
“For me…it feels so close in this battle of personal doubts and fears from the past five years, trying to gain the courage to finally see, for myself, a man who has been such a gift in my life, who made me wake up and see where I was and the potential I have to do good, just as he has even before becoming famous.”
This is the hope I feel.
“Now, on this March 24th, I am still Kristin. I haven’t changed that much, but I’ve been healing. Let the celebration begin!!!!!

Nice article, Kristin. Hoping that this year is better for you. David sure can lift one’s spirit, as he has done for me the whole 7 yrs since he has been on AI. He was a big help for me through a lot of personal things too, and I always said why stop something when it puts a smile on my face. What ever the reason I “get” him, I am so thankful that I do. I have met and talked to him, hugged him and had my photo taken in 4 different VIP’s, and if for some reason I don’t ever get to do it again, I have been blessed. Even though he is many moons younger than I, I think he is a lot smarter and talented than I in so many ways…just think how smart he will be after he has many years of experience! 🙂 He is just one in a 100 billion!!
I remember one year ago when I went to check my emails at work and he had sneaked back into the country saying “I’m back, I’m back” 🙂 I really thought there would be a concert by Christmas last year, but I’m happy now that one is coming up after waiting “patiently”! Yep, excitement, butterflies, and a great big smile on my face! He never fails! How could I ever go anywhere, even if he is doing it his way and we don’t see or hear from him as much. I know him and that voice is out there some where and I am willing to take what, where and when he wants to dish it out!!! 🙂

Great article Kristin. Thanks for making the effort to explain your thoughts on David. Beautiful! I liked that you mentioned David shines his light in dark places. Yes. That is exactly what he does.
Djafan, I am hoping rows a thru m (which somehow become the first 10 rows) are set aside for VIP That is usually the area used for VIP. I have never bought tickets so far in advance of a concert. I am thinking (hoping) they don’t have all their ducks in a row yet and VIP may become available.. However it is certainly possible that those rows were sold out already.
Having David tickets makes me feel like I lost 20 pounds. Pretty much just floating on air here.

Dear Kristin, I loved your article and I hope you will write again!
I agree that my own life and DA’s journey seem somehow connected. The two are somehow intertwined. Not because my life relies on him – but because his journey is so much more personal than simply that of a celebrity. His life mirrors ours. His struggles are relatable. He does not hide who he is or the challenges he faces.
I really appreciate that you have taken the time and thoughtfulness to share your beautifully articulated feelings with us. Thank you.

Kristin, what a great article. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with all of us. I’m one of those who has learned how to make things better because of David. I’ve learned how to overcome small, and seemingly dumb, habits because I’ve seen David’s example to the world of good and right. I haven’t been in those hard and dark places like so many have been. I wasn’t questioning my religion and whether or not there is a God. I had my life pretty much on an even keel. Then David happened. I realized that I really wasn’t enjoying life. I wasn’t getting out of it what I could, or needed for that matter. I didn’t listen to music. I didn’t stop to smell the roses. I wasn’t seeing that there is actually something very cute, and beautiful, in something as stinky as a little ol’ skunk. I just moved thru the days as they came and went. With his zest for life, and his example of faith, he showed me that life is a happy place. I just needed to make some adjustments (minor ones) in order to see the white clouds in the blue sky, to see the silver lining in the grey clouds in a dark sky. And, most of all to find out that listening to good music, sung by someone with a beautiful voice, helps to make those alterations that make life a better fit. I particularly liked this statement that you made, “… someone who was willing to take a step back himself with his life, and learn something he had to learn in order to move forward.” Yeah, that’s kind of what happened with me, and David was the catalyst that put me in motion.
Dayzee… I’m hoping for some luck tomorrow. If it doesn’t work out, I’m just happy to know that things are getting started and there is more to come.

Hi guys, I really appreciate and am touched by your comments so far 🙂 Hope everyone has been having a great day.
Still crossing fingers with the excitement that’s been building up there’s something in my area so I can finally see David. Congrats to everyone who was able to get tickets!!
It’s been a rough day today. I got a bad grade on one of my papers and I am just completely shut down right now in regards to my writing. My confidence has really been shaken…and I keep crying 😥 I just don’t know what to do and I still got two papers to finish up today…
Hope everyone is having a better day than I am.

Dear Kristin
These are some things that work for me. Sending you major hugs.
Eat (good food).. Drink water. Breathe. Look at something that calms you. Self care is vital, and you are worth it. Your ideas are unique to you and are worth while.
Next, prioritize which paper to begin with. Then – looking over the assignment – think of just one small thing you can do to begin. Starting with a very small step is important. Movement begets movement. But especially if it is something we know we can accomplish, so make it a small, easy step that is relevant to the accomplishment, no matter how simple.
The brain is an amazing thing. It loves movement. Walk around. Conduct imaginary music. Take a “breathing break”.
Confidence is not always necessary to success. Action, and caring enough to show up are. You. Are. Amazing!
And that is the truth – whatever happens. ^_^

Hang in there Kristin. I know how you feel. You just have to put that paper behind you and press on to the next one. I went back to school when I was 40 and hadn’t been to school for 20 years. Sometimes you’ll get a bad grade, but the next one will be great. It all balances out. You can’t let what one professor says destroy you. Some day you’ll look back on it and realize that it just made you tougher and more determined to do better each time. If this article is any indication of your writing abilities, you have mad skills. You can do it. I’ll be praying for you.

Thanks for putting into words how being a fan of David has helped you. Believe it or not all the negative you experience is also a teaching lesson for you. Reading what you wrote reminds us that how people your age ( and David, too) go through so many growing pains. If it’s any help, I can tell you that we all had our times when circumstances seemed to overwhelm and we thought we’d never survive. But we did, and we learned from the experiences. Take a second look at the paper you got the low grade on. I am sure your will spot the places where you can improve. It’s like I said, what seems to bring us down is meant to teach us.
You did a fine job on this article. It was done from the heart. I can see that. I want you to know that after I tweeted the article, one of our readers/guest writers, Anna from the Philippines, gave you a compliment. You may recall that she did some awesome drawings of David.

Hello again everyone.
First off, I am really, truly touched by your encouragement and kind words. I am feeling better after I walked around to get some fresh air as well as talking with my counselor. I spoke with friends and my parents earlier in the day but it just kept bothering me until I gave myself time to settle down and talk it out. Bluesky, thank you for your advice and suggestions they were really helpful 🙂
One thing my counselor told me was this: it’s about the story, NOT the end of the story.
Basically meaning, it’s about how the story goes and unfolds, not just how it ends.
Sitting here before dinner I began to type again, so I’m glad I gave myself breathing room before tackling it again 🙂
Tawna, I see what you did there 😉 hehe David song references
Lynne, it won’t be the first time I look back on things and see how they made me stronger 🙂
Abrra, absolutely agree with you about the negatives of life teaching you experience, because they certainly do. Thank you also for showing the tweet from the other guest writer, I was very touched by it.
Now the muncher must eat 😀 awesome also to see that show David announced is almost sold out already!! That’s promising!!

I’m sure the concert will be sold out by the time all is said and done. One of my reasons for not trying harder to get tickets was that it is outdoors, in November, in Utah, and the amphitheater goes really high, and I didn’t want to be sitting in the outposts of heaven, in the cold desert wind, wrapped in blankets and trying to enjoy myself. #whinerhere #anegativeinlife #ihavealreadylearnedfromthis
There will be more opportunities. Who knows, maybe it’ll be snowing in the northeast (I didn’t say that!), and I will be meeting Abrra on the train and traveling to an indoor venue. 🙂

Hush up ! We don’t use THAT word here anymore (snow). 😉 I am so happy because tomorrow we will have lots of rain and the temp will be 57. Hopefully all that nasty _ _ _ _ will be melted away. For the last 2 evenings we have had a deer family in our yard near the pond. Last night there were 2. Tonight there are 5. I tried to photograph them but they are far away and its almost dark. One is smaller so it might be a baby. I can’t imagine where they could go to birth babies in the weather we have had. They are a testament to perseverance.

The stage at Tuacahn is awesome. It has no back or definitive sides, but rises up with the huge red rock mountains behind it. The view is worth the price of your ticket. In one show they had teams of horses pulling stagecoaches down the mountain and across the stage. David will have plenty of room to roam.

I was so moved reading your article about the personal struggles you had and especially how David has helped you at various times. Having a role model like David in a young person’s life has to be a blessing. I had various celebrities that I admired when I was your age but none whom I could call a role model. Someone who just by watching how they deal with similar situations can bring you out of a difficult time. He’s a healer for sure.
“A young man… who was willing to take a step back himself with his life, and learn something he had to learn in order to move forward.”
I hope this year is a good year for you, and that you can also move forward.
How about those tickets that are basically sold out? I heard that six seats were left but that was an hour ago. Congrats to all who landed seats. I’m banking on an East Cast date to pop up. Soon!

Ah, Kristin, you are so lucky to have David as a role model to help you make some right choices, clear your mind or just mellow out. Like David says, if you don’t have some hard times in your life, you can’t appreciate the good times. The things that you struggle with is actually character building blocks that makes Kristin. When you achieve your goal, you will be so proud of yourself in spite of the ups and downs you had to go thru. When I decided to go to Beauty School I had a husband, 4 kids and a 4 bedroom house. But I got thru it and boy was I proud of myself when I got my license. That’s why I will never let it go because I worked too hard for it.
I guess they see that David will still sell out!! That sounds so good! 🙂

Good morning everyone! I was able to get my two papers done yesterday!! Also, read on FOD this morning about the tickets for that upcoming show in UT were sold out in 14 hours!!! Had a few happy tears for David this morning I was so glad to have read that. Made my morning, and I’m so happy for him. Still crossing fingers for something in my area!!
Bebe and Jans11, I was touched by what the both of you said in your comments 🙂 Thank you for taking the time to write what you both did.
Bebe, so far this year hasn’t been as dramatic as last year which is a good sign. Few anxiety issues, but I continue growing and improving one day at a time. David has been one of the best things that ever happened to my life, and it seemed like he came along at just the right time 🙂 I definitely echo your thoughts about him being a healer, because for me, he certainly was. Pretty much everything about him got me through some of the toughest years of my life…and even when he was gone those two years, that was when it hit me how truly blessed and lucky I was. I especially noticed as I saw the unfortunate antics of other celebrities around his age. Made me grateful and just wishing others were as lucky as me.
Jans11, I agree my struggles have made me who I am now, and confronting them as I heal and move forward in my life helped me see how strong I really am, and how far I’ve come. David has done that and more! Good for you on getting your license when you went to beauty school!! That is something to be proud of. I know when I finally see David that will be the greatest day of my life.
Some of my friends have commented to me the past few years about how I just glow whenever I talk about David and see the joy on my face. I’m not just blessed and lucky, I’m grateful. Didn’t even expect someone like him in my life, but then again none of us did and God obviously had other plans haha 🙂 Just this morning, I found in my purse a bracelet my best friend made me my senior year of high school, which was the year David left. She had pink colors to represent me, because I love pink LOL, but also our friendship, and green to represent David 🙂 Still have it to this day.
As I read the comments you all have left me, I am glad that I wrote this. When it hit the one year mark Tuesday, I just found myself suddenly wanting to write my thoughts about it, and voila! I am glad this is making other people happy too 🙂 I may be one of the few young fans still around at the moment, but I don’t regret it. How could I? David is one of the people that made me who I am now, for being such an amazing role model. I’ve started to believe that all of us are blessed or given a certain person in our lives to inspire us and get us through hard times, as well as change us without even knowing haha.
I know, for me, David was that person. I have other great influences with family and friends and others…but David was the one who changed everything…and I thank God every day that he did.
Anyway, enough of my ramblings lol hope everyone has a wonderful day and enjoy the warm temps! Finally some weather over 50 degrees!!!

Kristen and all;
I was so moved by what you wrote because I totally understand. I realize that you’re a young person. I’m in my 70s and feel about David very much as you do. I’m not quite sure how to express my feelings, but I’ll try. (David has a problem with expressing himself, but it doesn’t seem to matter. (:>) He has this wonderful musical talent, of course, but it goes WWWAAAAYYY beyond that. It’s way more that “Hey, this kid can sing.” He has a way of inspiring, he gives you that needed lift, he shares what he knows and feels with us. I’m embarrassed that he is more knowledgable and aware of what our needs are than we and he shares his wonderful faith with all of us and is such an inspiration. And what blows my mind is that it seems to just happen without him even trying. Even at my age, he seems to know more about life and living. I don’t think he even has a clue just how much he does for people. We must thank God for HE must have sent David to us.

Rose,
A tear just came to my eye as I read your comment and I think you expressed yourself perfectly. I can understand where you’re coming from in regards to expression because I’ve always struggled with that, but writing became that outlet for me, just like music became that outlet for David.
He definitely gives so many people inspiration and a little pick me up whenever we’re down. Please don’t feel embarrassed!! That’s happened to me and he’s only 3 years older than me lol.
I agreed with this point you made: “And what blows my mind is that it seems to just happen without him even trying.”
That has blown my mind as well and had made me a bit of a skeptic when I first started following his career, but then he just continued to impress me, and I started to change my mind, but also feel guilt for misjudging his character and personality. I echo your sentiments about how he probably doesn’t even have a clue about what he does for people, someone needs to get him to see that! There are so many people that are living proof of David’s amazing influence and are better, different people than they were prior. I’ve seen that from talking with other fans the past 2 years. For me, I definitely believe God sent David to us and we should thank Him, without a doubt. Based on all the good David has done for so many people, how could that not be possible?
Different ages, faiths, backgrounds, circumstances,, you name it…and people like David have brought those many things together because of all the people who love and appreciate him.
He is a good man, he really is.

Can’t believe I bought tickets for an event more than 7 months down the road. That would be spring, summer and part of autumn. By that time I may be over David. Perhaps a new singer will come along and I will be looking to sell those tickets on Ebay or something.
If I were the fellow selling tickets for Tuacahn, sitting there with a sold out concert, I would be thinking I should chat up that Archuleta feller and see if he would expand his Tuacahn visit for another night or two
Hmmm, over 200 nights before 11/07. Time to make another paper chain?
Rose , I too wonder how that young man can know so much about life and living it well.
Leaving for St. George tomorrow, then on the Vegas to tend a cat for a week or two. Hope to be set up for Saturday night on unplugged.

Michael is so funny here! What a person does for their kids! 🙂 Reminds me of myself when I would be cheerleading in the front room for my team! At first the grandkids were skeptical and then they ended up joining in! When they heard the Rock and Roll song come on when we got a touchdown, they came a running! 🙂

With Easter approaching for those who celebrate, David tweeted a hymn I’m very familiar with. I was surprised. This is the second time David sings a hymn that I know and have heard in other churches.
The version I listen to via Christian music is by Amy Grant.
The other hymn is one he sang at the Cara A Cara interview. This one I’ve heard in Catholic churches, most recently at my Fathers services.

St. George News
David Archuleta performs at Tuacahn, overflow seating only.
After tickets went on sale Wednesday, the response was overwhelming and no seats remain available in the main theatre. But, Director of Marketing Stephanie Finck said Monday, there are still a few tickets left in the overflow sections – but not many. To buy tickets in the overflow, telephone 435-652-3300. Overflow section tickets are $34.50 each, and no discounts apply.

“A commemoration of divine assistance.” That is the definition of the word: Ebenezer, from the song above.
“Origin of EBENEZER
Hebrew ebhen hā-ʽezer stone of help; from the application of this name by Samuel to the stone which he set up in commemoration of God’s help to the Israelites in their victory over the Philistines at Mizpah (1 Samuel 7:12)”
This song is one of my families favorites. When all my boys (that sing) are home visiting, we take parts and sing it a-capella. I sing alto and they take the other three parts. It is just the most amazing sound.
Glad DA shared it. I would love to hear his version. ^_^

Looks like you are on “look-out” duty today. ^_^
I have been dealing with some challenges that bite into my time here. And that may continue for a bit. Just want you to know that I look up every now and then and am so comforted to see someone keeping watch, as it were.
Dear DA
Did you know, that although you are not impressed with cats in general (and their tendencies to stray rather than hang around), there are more “Angelica Cats” than you could possibly know – watching for you – listening for the sound of a soulful noise – tuned to a vibration of joy – a rhythm that irresistibly draws, turns, calls, invites, promises, and enfolds.
Did you know?
That which you find you must answer, must seek, must discover, is one cord that draws us all. Privileged captives.

I have given up trying to make friends with my sons quirky computer. Before he left he says “if that happens do this. And if this happens do that “. Everything happened and nothing helped. So I will be happy with that little bitty David who lives in my phone. He still has a big voice

Bluesky, hope your challenges work out ok. I have also been going thru some stuff too. Bad news about a friend and also a nephew both having cancer. 😦 Another friend died suddenly a few weeks ago from a sudden heart attack. Also have a niece with lung disease. Wasn’t going to say anything as I don’t want to seem morbid, but it’s life and taking one day at a time. Thank God that my blood tests came out good. Elevated, but good. Sounds like an old person talking, don’t I!! haha And I finally did my taxes! Put them off too long.
Dayzee, you sound like me when my kids tell me “you just do this and this” and I can never get it to do anything! 🙂 Little David is what I see when I travel using my phone. I do have a tablet now too and both are better than dragging my laptop.
Happy that David is happy! 🙂
Whoo hoo, Gladys, sounds like you got tickets! Great news!

Check this out… it was in my local newspaper this morning (*clears throat…… hubby saw if first and pointed it out to me 🙂 ).
“The Spring Constitutional Symposium on Religious Freedom will include an imposing lineup of distinguished religious studies and constitutional scholars, former U.S. Supreme Court law clerks, multidenominational contributors, and a finale program featuring popular musical performer David Archuleta.”

Tawna, This is quite a symposium for him to be part of. I wonder what his speaking & singing fee is for this, not to shabby I’m sure.
This..
From 3 to 5 p.m., a panel composed of Hannah Smith, former law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas and senior counsel at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty; Matthew Franck, director of the Center on Religion and the Constitution at the Witherspoon Institute; Nathan Oman, professor of law at the College of William and Mary; and Alexander Dushku, a member of the Kirton McConkie law firm, will discuss recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions pertaining to the religious freedom of individuals, businesses and religious organizations. The panel will be held in the Library Auditorium.
And this….
“Because freedom of religion is a freedom shared by all Americans and because music has been such a powerful medium of religious expression, vibrating through the pages of our nation’s political and constitutional history, the center was especially interested in including a prominent musical guest speaker,” Griffin said. “We are excited to have popular singer and songwriter David Archuleta as the finale’s featured speaker and musical performer.”
As a former “American Idol” runner-up and member of America’s demanding music industry, Archuleta will share via word and song his unique life experience and provide insight into how religious freedom has impacted his life and career as an international musical performer. The finale will also include contributions by Kmiec, former U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Malta, and the popular Calvary Baptist Choir of Salt Lake City.
Admission to the symposium is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Free tickets for the morning and afternoon sessions are available at uvu.edu/ccs/events, or by calling (801) 863-5470. Free tickets for the finale program featuring David Archuleta and the other contributors are available at (801) 863-7469 or (801) 863-7474, the UCCU Center ticket office, Campus Connection, or at CCS in suite 305 of the UVU Library.

Dja, it’s an amazing event to be a part of. I have another commitment that night so I can’t go or I’d be there in a heartbeat. But Dayzee just got her tickets. I told her to memorize everything he says so she can report back. 🙂
I loved this “… the center was especially interested in including a prominent musical guest speaker,” Griffin said. “We are excited to have popular singer and songwriter David Archuleta as the finale’s featured speaker and musical performer.”
This write up is treating him like an artist, a well-known personality, and someone who has something to share with the world. That’s just the way it should be. David has passed thru the ‘teen idol’ phase. He’s become someone to pay serious attention to. While David has been in the music industry for a long time, he has now, in the last year, entered into the world of a professional, a major player, in the industry. Our teenaged boy has become a man with an agent and management to take care of his business comings and goings. He gets to concentrate on just what it is that he does best – make the music. Oh, and go to hockey games with friends. 🙂
