Betty’s Roots Tech Recap ~ David Archuleta

Screencaps by Abrra from 8throwcenter’s videos
I had a delightful lunch on Saturday, Feb 21, with Dayzee and Tawna21. I finally got brave enough to “get acquainted”. For any of you who haven’t met them, they are such a delight to spend time with. That experience has emboldened me to take another step and say a few words about David’s Roots Tech appearance. I have relied on second hand news from others so many times that I shouldn’t hesitate to do my own recap. From having been there, I know how much it means to his fandom to get any little drop of news.
I felt the excitement in the air….it was electric. Something BIG was going down here today! I told my friend, she could go do anything she cared to do. All I needed was to find Hall D and sit down. I was content to stay there til his 5:30 show now that I had my bright green wrist band. (I guess I became one of those “campers” I read about later).
What a delightful day! About every hour there was a new program. Each one planned to inspire and motivate us to want to search for our families. I enjoyed it so much that I decided I’d come again next year and try to take classes all three days. If any of you have ever attended an “Education Week”, it was the same sort of rich experience. If I’m physically able, I still plan to come again for all of it, although it will be like David’s “overload”. I always end up with a headache from cramming so much information into my noggin’.
I’m not good at guesstimating, but to me the room was like 4 football fields in width and 2 football fields in depth—I mean HUGE! They had at least eight jumbotrons that enlarged the action on stage and it seemed to us that we’d see just as good or better by finding one of those big things to watch it on. So we moved to the South section and were very satisfied with our decision. We missed out on much of the confusion over the center seating and fortunately stayed within the room. I understand many were turned away. That was sad to hear. When David is concerned, they should never overbook the room. Can’t help but hurt for those who may have traveled just for this and were unable to get in.
So, the Studio C came on stage and performed their little skit about talking to their grandmother about her history. She had lived a colorful life. When they discovered funny illegal activities she had been involved in, they quickly brought the interview with her to a close. Short and Sweet. From the applause we could tell there were many young fans there just for Studio C. I must admit the applause for Studio C was greater than for David at one point. You had to be young to appreciate them I think.
Studio C began some lip syncing and clowning around, then BANG out of nowhere came this…this…CRAZY person….I was lost. I’ve never heard “Jump” before. The character looked something like David, but then again it wasn’t him, was it? I had to ask my friend if THAT was David! She smiled and said yes. Then I understood the lip syncing and all fell into place. As I marveled at this character and what he was doing that I’ve never seen or heard David do, I thought to myself, “And this is someone who doesn’t like to be the center of attention”????? Sure fooled me.
I struggle some as David talks. I so want to help him succeed and find the right words to fit the occasion. But I’ve realized his unique use of the English language helps identify him and sets him apart. He searched for truth in every word he uttered as he visited with us about his music.
First there was the video, “Nunca Pense” BEAUTIFUL. I can feel and hear the rumble of those drums that struck to my very core. Even now I yearn for them to pound louder and louder. So haunting. The actors were outstanding. The music, the facial expressions that had been “handed down” from generation to generation—like “Go ahead, pick up that guitar and play with me”. The little chin nudges a couple of times to encourage the person to “Continue trying, don’t give up”. “Good Job”. I’ve thought it would be wonderful and justifiable for David to receive some Latino recognition for his work on it, but if it does nothing but touch the hearts of children and turns them to their fathers it will have accomplished what it was meant to do.
“Glorious”, is just glorious. All of the melodies come together to create a symphony. (A similar theme as in “Nunca Pense” as each progenitor brings his piece to the puzzle, the symphony is completed). “Mirror”, what an undertaking. So many words at such a pace. David did a masterful job. He always owns the covers he undertakes. We will all have a copy of that song in our own collections one day, too. “Don’t Run Away” finally sounds complete now that he has picked it up again. (It was good to see Kendra there on the piano and as a back up singer).
The live performance of the song “Nunca Pense” was the frosting on the cake and on the week of family searching. I have searched for my family for years. I work a bit, then let it rest, then pick it up again. Each time I begin again, new pieces of the puzzle fall into place. I have relatives dead and gone who help me in my search. I believe it to be true. They are as much a part of me as my own mother and father and I love learning about them. That’s what David’s music was about and what Roots Tech was about and “Ohhhhhhhh, It’s Glorious”!
Thanks to everyone on The Voice for your friendship and for loving and sharing David.

Sounds like so much fun seeing that “new guy” at Rootstech, Betty! Wanted to be there but couldn’t this time. The last time was over 3 years ago when David made his announcement and I was able to stay with Dayzee and met Tawna. They are the greatest you’d want to meet!

Thanks for sharing your day to see David in concert. It’s an experience most fans can only dream of at this point in time.
” I have relatives dead and gone who help me in my search. I believe it to be true. They are as much a part of me as my own mother and father and I love learning about them.”
You surely got so much out of the day at Roots Tech.

Oooh! I love recaps, and Betty , thanks so much for yours , for sharing your experience with us! Felt like i was there too❤️Happy for you to finally see David live , on a stage , theres nothing like it. In a place as big as that hall i would have positioned myself to watch the big screens too. Happy also you had time with lovely Dayzee and Tawna💗. I missed chat last night, conked out on my sofa till after midnite , after watching Shania Twain special! Always loved her songs and who she is. Can guarantee if it had been a David special on TV though ,I would have remained energized, and stayed awake. 😊 Happy March 1st! Hang in there snowbirds, spring is around the corner,( well and maybe down the street aways . ). Love you guys! Thanks for the sunday puzzle abrra❤️

Betty, I had no idea you were such a talented writer. Thank you for giving us a beautiful message. I feel compelled to comment on a couple of your thoughts.
“I felt the excitement in the air….it was electric” I was so befuddled all afternoon I could not make sense of anything around me. I was constantly bothering poor Abrra because I felt she was the only one I could reach who would understand my predicament. My insides were full of bubbles.
“He searched for truth in every word he uttered” Yes! That honesty he portrays is more important to him than smooth or hip conversation. He does not strive to be clever, he strives for the truth.
“I have relatives dead and gone who help me in my search.” My mother was a professional genealogist and often talked of receiving messages from relatives on the other side who wanted their families to find the story of their lives. I think her success in finding lost ancestors was due to her listening and acting on feelings that came to her.
And Nunca Pense “the rumble of those drums……so haunting” as background to those awesome vocals gave David both a great beginning and ending to the best performance I have attended. A song sung twice and still not enough.
Chat was great last night. So good to spend time with people who love David.
Oh boy! Its Sunday and we get a new puzzle. 🙂

Your recap was such an enjoyabe read; I could feel the excitement building with each sentence. Glad you had so much fun and had the chance to meet Dayee and Tawna!
“…, then BANG out of nowhere came this…this…CRAZY person….I was lost. I’ve never heard “Jump” before. The character looked something like David, but then again it wasn’t him, was it? Hahaha so true, Betty. Watching at home that night for the first time on a video clip, I knew it was David but I didn’t realize he was lip synching. I thought it was David, covering the song “Jump” but with very exaggerated mannerisms. hahaha Had no idea he was ‘acting’.
Sky,
I watched the Shania Twain Live from Las Vegas special last night too! Really good show!!

Betty, I love recaps! So glad you finally got to experience David live, nothing better than that except for meeting fans and speaking David without the roll of the eyes 🙂
“But I’ve realized his unique use of the English language helps identify him and sets him apart. He searched for truth in every word he uttered as he visited with us about his music.”
David doesn’t fumble as much as he used to with his words but even so I loved hearing him speak. He has such a unique way of expressing himself and now that he’s speaking Spanish it’s so interesting that he speaks in the same manner!
I have Don’t Run Away right now in my brain but it does rotate on a day to day basis with all the others, just can’t get enough of that voice.

Bringing David’s tweet over. I didn’t realize that he was lyric tweeting. This lyric is from Norwegion songwriters Nico and Vince. I’d never heard of them and have engoyed listening to their beats. I did recognize one song that was popular on the radio, Am I Wrong, it’s very catchy.
Here is the full album where the lyric David tweeted came from. It’s on #9 Powerful at a little over the 20th minute mark.

I saw that FOD has a nice puzzle on their front page today 🙂 I had to do it! They made it 80 pieces and something was very different in how you work the pieces. If a piece looks like it goes in a spot by color, but not the shape, you can left click it once and then right click to rotate the piece to the position you need. It was quite a challenge but I was able to finish.
I am reporting this so all you puzzle lovers won’t think you have lost your mind. 😉 I have not had this happen with my puzzles. I make them 70 pieces, I have never seen this before.

Betty, what a great recap! It was so fun to meet you last week, and to have lunch with you and Dayzee! You’re a sweetie to now know!!! ♥
I think every David fan in that huge room had a dropped jaw expression when we finally realized that it was David jumping around and lip-synching on that stage. It honestly would be hilarious to see a video of what we must have looked like! 🙂
I love this …
“The live performance of the song “Nunca Pense” was the frosting on the cake and on the week of family searching. I have searched for my family for years. I work a bit, then let it rest, then pick it up again. Each time I begin again, new pieces of the puzzle fall into place. I have relatives dead and gone who help me in my search. That’s what David’s music was about and what Roots Tech was about and “Ohhhhhhhh, It’s Glorious”!”
And, I have to agree that “Don’t Run Away” really does sound like it’s now been finished. He brought that song to a whole new level with what he did with it that night. Love it!!
My husband and I went strictly for the entertainment at the end, and ended up with a desire to attend next year for the conference part. We really enjoyed what we heard and learned. Anyway, the ‘entertainment’ was so, so awesome (just preaching in case someone isn’t in the choir already 🙂 ). My dear hubby is a quiet admirer of David. He’s one of those fans that just follows me hither and thither when at a concert, and then will recap with me all the way home, or just be quiet and let me chatter away. 😀
Yay!!! a puzzle! Thanks Abrra!! It’s going to be a great one because they always are! (maybe I’ll tackle the other one as well)

Its the same site for both puzzles. I was just trying to figure out why some of the pieces needed rotation. All I can see is that the piece count was higher. I think I had to flip 75% of the pieces on the FOD picture. My brain hurts. hahha

Abrra,
At least 75% had to flip. Its so pastel, that I think that makes it more difficult also. I was looking to see if there is a place where it lets you have the option of flipping or not, and I couldn’t see any. Yeah, brain pain. haha I found it easiest to start with the words at the bottom.

Thanks so much for the recap. I’ve always loved hearing about the fan perspective. Since I haven’t been fortunate enough yet to hear him live, it really means a lot. 🙂
Abrra,
When creating the puzzle, there is a box that you can check that says “Rotate.” Clicking that box is what causes it. But it makes the puzzles so much harder! Fun though. 🙂

Hi Heidijoy! I won’t change them. It was hard until I figured the FOD one out. I don’t blame you for quitting on it with a touchpad.
Here is one just for fun! No David, but I liked the picture and could see it as a challenge.

Heidijoy, you were brave to even try it without a mouse. 🙂 It was frustrating because you have to click to get it to turn, then click off of it, then click on it again to get it to turn the way you eventually needed it to be. Yeah, I’m not crazy about spending over a half hour on right and left clicking…. Abrra knows just what we need. 😀

Hi all. Can’t do the puzzle cuz the whole page wants to move instead of the individual pieces! Will do it when I get home. And not even trying the one on FOD.
I also wanted to say from my last comment that I hope to be able to meet some more good David fans someday. My phone was giving me fits so I posted what I had and forgot about it! :).

Dja,
Thanks for sharing that video. Amazing!
I actually tried to draw David from the left sidebar pic after I watched it. (The one with the Bench hair and blue jacket collar.) I was surprised that you could tell it was a human head with hair and neck and a jacket. Best I’ve ever done!! 🙂 and still no resemblance to David. LOL I had a lot of trouble with they eyes and the ears. I think those are the hardest to get right.
I really admire people with the gift to draw like that. It’s not easy, that’s for sure!

Abrra, I’m saying that since there are expensive cruises/tours to Siberia and the cold places of the world, you should create your own tour through your own place/backyard (real estate) and charge people to come see ‘the snow and arctic dogs’. Make sense? 🙂 You could even serve cocoa!

OK Tawna. I get it now. Your original statement was vague to me.
Tour would be the walkway tunnels to 2 bird feeders and the dog pen. The rest of the place is buried under 5 feet of ice and snow. I feel so bad for my kids because they shovel the 75 foot driveway at least 3 times each storm. Sometimes more.
David says ” Something new for me coming from Utah where I guess everybody is used to and prepared for snow days.”
No gloves and wrong shovel. I’d say he is right in line with the natives.
