Exploring Nashville ~ David Archuleta
Posted by bebereader on Wednesday, January 28, 2015
I have a new disorder, OND, otherwise known as Obsessive Nashville Disorder. I have written about Nashville several times before and here I am again. I can’t get enough of this city that I have never visited. What’s not to like? It’s Music City, USA! The consensus is that Nashvillians are warm and welcoming people; you can find any type of cuisine to your liking; the cost of living is good; weather, usually mild, although they did have snow last week. Having grown up in NYC, Nashville seems like a perfect fit for me; a cosmopolitan city with a cozy feel.
It’s easy to understand why David likes Nashville, too. It has a completely different vibe than other big cities like, Los Angeles. The hustle-bustle that is felt in Nashville is all about music. The town has respect for and is a very nurturing community for musicians. You can’t walk 5 paces without running into someone who plays music or works in the business in some capacity.
โIn Nashville, we donโt bug the celebrities when they are in public; it is an unwritten rule of decent behavior and respect. This is one reason why the celebrities like it here.โ ~Emifriend, The Voice
Although David hasn’t told us that he’s in Nashville, he doesn’t have to. He was spotted at a restaurant by the name of Tazza last week and Stephanie Mabey tweeted that she had a writing session with him.
Don’t miss this video “36 Hours in Nashville” from The New York Times, sent by Emi.
credit The New York Times
My curiosity about Nashville this time led me to research the lesser-known places than the famous Ryman Auditorium or The Grand Ole Opry. The places to browse, to eat, to learn, to play, to see shows, to spend one’s waking hours; the interesting places that David may find if he does some exploring when he gets a chance, in between writing sessions. I’m sure Nashville has them; doesn’t every city?
I started digging, but as soon as I got going, our Nashville resident extraordinaire, Emifriend appeared with some great suggestions and I picked up speed! Choosing which to include here was a daunting task but someone had to do it and I’m glad it was me. haha The following list, in no particular order, is a compilation of places I found from research, and suggestions from Emifriend.
Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum
I would love to see their current exhibit, Kenny Rogers “Through the Years”, depicting the singer’s life in music. Throughout the museum on display there’s everything from Elvisโ gold Cadillac to Taylor Swiftโs costume changes from her last tour. And part of the grand tour is a visit to RCA Studio B, where hits like Dolly Partonโs โI Will Always Love Youโ was recorded. http://countrymusichalloffame.org/
Las Paletas Gourmet Popsicles
I remember David tweeting about how much he loves avocado popsicles. I’m sure he can find them here. This Mexican popsicle shop makes natural creamy and fruit-only โpaletas,โ and customers can dunk their popsicles in fresh chocolate. The smooth avocado and Mexican caramel flavors seem to be the most popular. “Made in our storeโs kitchen, Las Paletas offers โcreamโ paletas that have the texture of an ice cream bar and โfruitโ paletas that have the texture of a traditional ice pop. Using fresh, ripe fruit, vegetables and other ingredients including grains, nuts, flowers and herbs from community gardens, we offer 20 or more flavors each day.” http://laspaletasnashville.com/
Centennial Park has a one-mile walking trail, biking trails, gardens, winding paths and a replica of the original Greek Parthenon with a life-size statue of Athena. The Parthenon also serves as Nashville’s art museum.
http://www.nashville.gov/Parks-and-Recreation/Parks/Centennial-Park.aspx
Pancake Pantry is a Nashville tradition! David has had breakfast here when he was in Nashville. Family owned business since 1961, has a down to earth atmosphere with 23 different pancakes on the menu. There have been celebrity sightings here and it’s Vince Gill’s favorite place for breakfast. http://www.thepancakepantry.com/

The Bluebird Cafe and other such establishments have open mic nights. What is open mic night? It’s a live show in a small club where audience members may perform at the microphone. It’s an opportunity for songwriters, singers and musicians to get the experience of singing to a live audience while trying out new material. I can just imagine David going with some songwriters to open mic night at The Bluebird. Hopefully he would get up to sing and when the audience hears his voice they will be blown away! http://bluebirdcafe.com/index.cfm
Gibson Guitar Factory George Gruhn trades guitars from all over the world here and is world-renown for his expertise with guitars. For trades/repairs/sales, the home of Gibson electric guitars today is “Gibson USA,” built in 1974 in Nashville specifically for the production of Gibson’s Les Paul guitars. The entire guitar industry went through a slump in the ’70s but the spirit of hope remained strong at Gibson.

The Groove Record Shop sells new and used vinyl records and cds. It specializes in hard to find records. If you canโt find what youโre looking for, The Groove will probably have it the next week. Thereโs always something new to see. They also host in-store performances from bands visiting the area. They offer hours of browsing pleasure. Sounds like a place I could get lost in. http://thegroovenashville.com/
Puckett’s Grocery and Restaurant
(Love this one! Thanks Emi!) “Where the main ingredients are Real Food, Real People and Real Atmosphere! Puckettโs Grocery & Restaurant in Leiperโs Fork, TN is more than just a place to enjoy a good meal. Itโs a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. With mismatched tables and chairs and an eclectic clientele of tourists, farmers, songwriters… Puckettโs stage has recently held Tanya Tucker, Rodney Crowell,…Phil Everly of The Everly Brothers…and many more hit songwriters.” http://puckettsofleipersfork.com/history/history.php
The Franklin Theater, where you can see plays, movies and concerts. In 2014, The Franklin hosted sold out concerts for Art Garfunkel, Bret Michaels and Sheryl Crow. http://www.franklintheatre.com/
Tango Grill Parrillada
I hope David finds this restaurant. The chef is from Uraguay and specializes in South American gourmet food. Homemade empanadas are on the menu among other Argentinian dishes. Take a look for yourself. http://www.tangogrillnashville.com/
To find out what concerts are playing in the venues in and around Nashville, this link is helpful: http://www.nowplayingnashville.com/
So did I sell you on Nashville yet? haha With any luck David will visit some of these places.
Thank you, Emi, for your contributions!

Thank you for a lovely tour of Nashville! I especially liked the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Centennial Park. The 36 Hours in Nashville video gave a perfect tour of the highlights of the city. I see that the hall of fame is honoring Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash soon. Having read a few biographies on both of them, I find this a sweet tribute to a friendship that lasted for decades until Cash passed away. They were fans of each other before either of them had met in person. There was a mutual love for telling stories in their songs that formed a bond of friendship.
How handsome is David in his suit and golden tie? ๐

Reading all this it’s no wonder David loves Nashville. And yes because of David i have developed a huge interest in Nashville. It’s a place i plan to visit one day.
Nice to see David honing his craft in the music capital acording to many. The hastags included #pop.

Any one else ready to make the trip? ๐ It honestly has been on my bucket list for several years, but hubby and I have just not ever done it. Your tour here has made it even more tempting. And, I would love to meet up with Emifriend!!
Thank you, Abrra, for this most recent photo. Yes, he does look good in his suit and tie! It has me wondering though, was this what he wore to the writing session? He seems to be very comfortable in a suit anymore, it seems.

Good article, Bebe! I also have OND, I have always loved that place, even before the days of David. Years ago we went there and toured. We ended up at Johnny Cash’s house and his dad was in the driveway. We stood around and talked for awhile, he was so down to earth. We went to the Grand Old Opry and Opryland. Opryland isn’t there anymore and when my daughter and I went last year found out it was taken down. A big shopping mall is there now, near where the GOO is now. We seen a lot and went to the Bluebird Cafe and met Emifriend. There were about 20 singers there that night and had so much fun. I actually wanted to go there again a few yrs ago before I knew that David liked it there. Then I found out he was going there and loved it, I thought “that’s it, I have to go again”! ๐
This is a restaurant we went to that is in the shopping mall. Something really different. Hope it posts.

Forgot to say how much I love the 2 photos above. Any picture with David is amazing! ๐ The top one reminds me of a “child Prodigy” picture. Non-chalantly playing the piano, totally self-absorbed in his music. Wonder what that mind of his was thinking of! ๐ So serene and beautiful.

Urban Pop? I had that question too. So, I did a little searching and from what I saw it encompasses a lot of different things but most implied a sort of R&B sound and beat driven, and some are dance style rhythms. (I could work with that! LOL)
I believe Rap falls under this too, but somehow I don’t see David going there. ๐

When I go I will have to include Pucketts Grocery and Restaurant, it sounds right up my alley! Also have to make it to the “Bluebird “and the country Music Hall of Fame. And who knew a replica of the Parthenon and statue of Athena would be in a big park?
I had such a fun time reading this!
I’m so happy D is in Nashville, whether he is moving there, or just staying there to write for awhile. I love thinking of him …finding his own favorite places to go and just hangout and explore and enjoy while working on his art…all amidst a city full of musicians. Collaborating once again with Stephanie Mabey. I first met Stephanie after recording a song she wrote called โช#โGloriousโฌ. Weโve been writing quite a bit since. Getting back together this week to see what more will come as we put our heads together. I deleted my Twitter and Instagram from my phone for a week because I noticed I was spending way too much time looking at what everyone was doing and literally refreshing and waiting for the screen to change. I realized how much it was distracting me, sucking up my time and I needed to get back in tune with things. The difference has been Amazing for me, and I may write a blog for next week to go into more detail about it.

Lynnella… JB was on Ellen looking much different than he has (I didn’t watch it, just saw a clip of it), and was telling her that he’s done things he shouldn’t have- she agreed in her Ellen style, it was hilarious – and that he’s found that he isn’t who he’s been pretending to be. I thought the same thing, did he read David’s blog? Anyway, there was a critic on the program right after that who said that JB has a long way to go to prove that he’s making a change, and that frankly he (the critic) doesn’t think for a minute that it’s the truth. I guess we’ll wait and see. They showed some clips of when he was younger and how Usher was ‘styling’ him. He was a child, it would have been so easy to get swept up in the moment, and he did. Fortunately, David could see what was happening and didn’t allow that to happen to him. He’s got a brain in that cranium, and it works (overtime)!

Thanks for the info Lynnella. I saw a picture of JB on Ellen. I have not watched the interview, but plan to. It sounds like this is the beginning of a relaunch of his career where he wants to be taken seriously.
I started following JB on Instagram http://instagram.com/justinbieber/ a few months ago. ( I follow and unfollow a variety of singers) I can’t say if I can tell he has changed because he wasn’t doing any music or acting out. He was in Europe and was basically laying low and spending time with friends. He has the underwear modeling job now, so maybe the execs made an impression on him to start acting more mature. The ads are very adult in nature. He hasn’t done much musically lately than I know of. I can see where he could have read about David’s blog. It had to be talked about in some music industry circles. David was very bold and brave to call out the handlers and business people around him. I wish JB luck and hope he finds the change he seeks.
I have watched the JB movie , it was a documentary, on Netflix. I saw that his “grooming” in the business was very close to the path that David took ( except for being on AI) The home movies of JB performing when he was very young showed a soulful singer. I think once he got around too many adults telling him how to be, he lost himself and tried to please the adults. Sounds familiar.

I think that if JB didn’t read David’s blog Scooter surely did. Scooter has credited David for his find of JB, so he is very aware of David and probably keeps tabs on him since he was interested in him. Hopefully JB was sincere, time will tell. But I know his sales and popularity has decreased. This all could be a ploy from the “adults” in preparation for a new album he’s working on and need the $$$ to roll in.
I saw the Ellen interview and the calvin klein pics, very adult.
Abrra, I saw deleted and I held my breath hahaha. Looking forward to that blog.
Excited to see what all comes out of David’s collaborations with Stephanie. Here is a recent interview.

Abrra, finally someone writing realistically and not critically about JB. Each artist who is going through similar experiences have their own stories. As they say the industry is viscous. It is only because we see the effects now on David that we might better and more kindly understand others who are shouldering more than we would ever know.
Now this is probably just a coincidence but I remember sometimes David would wear particular outfits and JB would show up somewhere wearing the same David style. I also remember when David was involved in religion in some aspect and JB would mention his own devotion. Etc Etc. Just a coincidence perhaps.
Anyway, I am in New York and dropped in to see a pleasant comment about another artist who was almost shipped out of the US. So funny really almost like the calamity of the big snowstorm that didn’t really happen, at least here.

JB needed to be off the drugs to get rid of the attitude. That is a bad enough vice. Sounds as if he might, hope it’s not a copy cat thing. He did look a lot better.

I’ve had my eyes wide open all this week but no sightings of David. I even spent a night at the Bluebird. My worship leader from my church was “Singing in the round” with three other song writers. A wonderful night! My favorite song of the evening was one with a refrain that said, ” I am glad I worried about that.” It was a funny song about all the silly things we worry about.

As far as my thoughts on JB go, I am not a fan but I am fascinated in his career path because we don’t see such a quick rise in popularity very often. As with MJ and Elvis we can see it doesn’t go too well over the long haul. If he can break free of the handlers and do some real self examination, I think he can pull himself out of the teen idol image. He has the ability to sing and play instruments, I think he needs more vocal training.
I am hoping to hear from Gladys tonight as well. She has been on vacation in Brazil with her nieces.

Made it back from NY through the thickest fog that only showed the ground when the wheels touched. Great pilot, there must have been excellent help from the female co-pilot. Coming tomorrow, a repeat performance of another big storm. I only wanted snow for Christmas so be careful what you wish for. Now we have the outdoor birds and wildlife to look after. Some sit in the tree outside the kitchen window and look in when they arrive. I open the window which signals that yes we are bringing out their breakfast.
The picture of David and Stephanie looks like a painting that should be framed. I came across a statistic that showed the very high percentage of artists who are introverts just needing space in a well organized life. Makes very good sense.

Abrra,
That IG video by Mary Dee is adorable and would go great with SnowAngelz new “smile” post. ๐
I saw something about Marie Osmond following some David fans, too, and agree “something is in the wind.”
I can’t help but wonder if maybe they’re doing a duet? ๐
Or if she’s trying to get more people to see her own posts to increase her own fanbase? (Doubt that’s necessary)
Or maybe she’s considering something to do with helping David produce his music and is, metaphorically, taking the “pulse” of David’s fanbase? ๐
IDK which it is, or if it’s any of that, but it sure is interesting to contemplate.
My list of questions just keeps growing and growing and growing … LOL #InquiringMinds ๐

There is one thing that I have noticed that while following David’s music I have met many who also appreciate him in the same ways. These people have also one more thing in common and that is a great compassion for animals. Right now I am mentioning compassion for the wildlife on the eastern seaboard who are enduring a severe crisis brought on by the several inches and even several feet of snow. The eagles can’t get their prey, the small birds can’t get their seeds and well the deer and owls and so mush more wildlife is suffering until the snow disappears somewhat. The wildlife rescue places are full of hungry, cold and wet wildlife. So if any of David’s fans can feed birds then please do or if you have a wooded area please don’t dismiss your table scraps. They eat apples, berries, anything left over from the kitchen. I just had several sea gulls arrive and they are removed from the ocean for whatever the reason. If we can help out then the larger hawks etc won’t prey on birds such as the red cardinals who are so beautifully red against their white backgrounds. Not to be on a sad note but yesterday a pair of cardinals arrived for the day again and today it is just the female who is of a less obvious color.
So pardon the interruption but sometimes we don’t know what is really happening outside and we can make such a difference. another winter storm is on the way.
Sing on David!

SB, I’m a bird feeder as are my grandkids. It all started with hubby who raised pigeons and is a bird lover. Interruptions are fun ๐

SB, We feed the birds here each day, even though they aren’t struggling because of the weather. We just like to see them and know that they are enjoying ‘free’ food. The interesting part happens when we look out and see a deer scooping the seeds up with its tongue or trying to figure out how to get its head into the feeder trough (it has a roof) for the food that’s in there. One day there was a small buck that tried it. He must have forgotten that he had antlers on his head. He became a little stuck in the opening. We never saw him do that again. ๐

My wife and I enjoyed attending the 4:00 PM temple session with you today (February 15, 2017). It was a pleasure meeting you. We are proud of the fact that you served a mission after American Idol, and sacrificed worldly things, for a time, to serve the Lord and others. We also loved hearing you sing with Nathan Pacheco. Thank you for helping my ancestors from Norway today. .
