David Archuleta ~ Twenty-Four and There’s So Much More

Posted by djafan on Monday, January 19, 2015

David+Archuleta+0101

I saw Neil Young in concert in Frankfurt, Germany during the 70’s. It was in a gigantic gymnasium, everyone packed tightly together sitting cross-legged on the floor, (yes, sitting). Kind of like a relaxed mosh pit. The lights dimmed. A hush descended. Then this unassuming man slowly ambled onstage as though he was just wandering around and ended up there by accident and proceeded to blow us all away. Half the concert was with the band. The last half was just him sitting on a stool with a guitar and harmonica strapped to his head.

Neil Percival Young is still touring to sold-out concerts at the age of seventy.

I chose these two songs to share because I love them, and because the lyrics in Old Man: “Twenty-four and there’s so much more” and Hey Hey My My: “It’s better to burn out than to fade away” seem to sum up what Neil achieved in his lifetime and capture best what I hope for David.

Both videos credit Unsal Cetinkaya

For sure, Angelica, Neil Young will always be Neil Young – remembered and talked about. There are those that have rooted themselves in well-drained soil. They will continue to grow and become the potted plant on the kitchen table- long-lasting and talked about. My wish for David and his future.

Thank you for the videos. I had to chuckle at myself. ‘Old Man’ with it’s mellow mood was so peaceful to me. Then, ‘Hey,Hey, My,My’ with it’s psychedelic mood took me right to my late teens early 20’s. I used to thrive on that music. Reminded me of when I was with a date and we sat on the floor of a small venue in SLC, Utah, and watched Iron Butterfly perform. I was in my heaven when “In a gadda da vida” was played, all 15 minutes of it (he didn’t enjoy it as much). #daysgoneby #daysoffuturepast 😀

I notice that there is another post up, so I don’t know if anyone will see this or not. I watched a program on PBS tonight of Robert F. Kennedy giving what was supposed to be a campaign speech in Indianapolis, but it was the night MLK was killed. The crowd waiting to hear Kennedy didn’t know of the tragedy and he had to tell them. He then gave one of the greatest speeches ever given in such a grave time in our country. Here is a link to the story, if anyone would like to read about it and read the speech:

I never got into Neil Young as a solo artist. I was a fan of the band Crosby, Stillls, Nash (and sometimes Young). I can relate to the line 24 and there’s so much more. At that age we still have an idealist mindset. Our goals might not be fully formed but the road is stretched out for us to walk to achieve them. I admire David’s perseverance in persuing his personal and profressional goals. He tells us he is now ready to tackle serious work on his music. At 24 he is a work in progress. How fortunate he is to be able to spend time exploring his own musical path.

That is right, DA: You will “hear” your songs for the first time – when you sing them for us.

(Tongue in cheek: I am so glad Dear DA that you know this and are getting ready to “face the music”. ^_^)

Angelica: loved your music and thoughts! NY was not on my radar then. It is fun to hear him now and think about music in general. I like all the chord changes and variations in accompaniment. I love it when people who know music just cut loose and use that knowledge to entertain — themselves as well as the audience: when the performer is having fun – so are we!

I get to see Guster with my sons the end of this month. This will be about the 4-5 year in a row for us. I get some interesting looks when I turn up with my little grey head and begin jumping up and down. But it is so fun to immerse oneself in just really good music and musicianship. Thank you so much for sharing this and part of your life.

Yes, shhhhh…don’t tell Bench. I was going for the theme of 24 and so much more age-wise and a better match up with the Neil Young album cover.

I like that Neil does not have a perfect voice. In fact, I wish David would push his voice to go outside what is safe a bit. I loved Falling Stars, written by Jess Cates, Emanuel Kiriakou, and Claude Kelly, because he said he did it just because it was a beautiful song. I think a lot of David’s past work has been spent hauling up mediocre songs by the strength of his vocal chords to sound much better than they are. In an interview he said Eman told him to try not to sound like himself when he sang it and it worked. He left out the vibrato and riffs and had to reach outside of his comfort for the high notes. It gave the song a raw, breathy anguish that conveyed perfectly the pain. I believe that the real magic in any art is found in the imperfections that connect to our own flawed humanity. But tastes differ.

I knew “billboard”David looked somewhat different in that picture! 😳😃. Great job working your magic! Angelica, always liked the song “Old Man”. How time flies.. Can’t believe Neil is now the old man in his iconic song. “24 and there’s so much more”. Yes , so much ! Probably my favorite song of Neil’s was “Heart of Gold” I actually don’t remember the second one you posted but I was jumping and spazzing around the room to it . Haha. Oh wow Tawna! In a gadda da vida, and the long version that seemed to go on forever ,and it did lol loved that song ! Angelica , Eman was so right about his suggestions for David, singing Falling Stars. Love that song . I remember . I remember D telling us in the park , about that change up. Yep ,that change pretty much killed me …what he did with his voice. And I know what you mean. Will be very interesting to see what’s ahead with the songs he writes and sings. (Oh , and love those tweets 💗👍)

Interesting things you learn here! Am I the only one who didn’t realize that the “Young” in Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young was Neil Young? “Heart of Gold” was a song I liked by Neil.

Yes, Angelica; that’s why “Falling Stars” is one of my all time favorites. You can feel the rawness in the emotion in David’s voice. It’s those songs where his voice breaks’ a little, whether intended or not that draw me in. “Love Me Tender” on American Idol, the live performance at the 1:30 mark. It’s natural, it’s raw and the imperfection conveys the pain more than a perfect performance would.

    Abrra,
It’s interesting what strikes each of us. Begin. never seems to hit my CD player anymore. I’m not really sure why. I like his voice on those songs. I guess I just like other songs more. My two “go to” CDs these days are Forevermore (I STILL love him singing Nandito Ako, plus Rainbow Remix, and I’ll Never Go) and the little blue CD, NO Matter How Far, (I think you already know which song is my favorite on that one. 😉 ). If I’m listening to music, I’m almost ALWAYS playing one of those two CDs.

I’d be curious to know if others listen primarily to one CD, have a mixed tape, or just randomly rotate and listen to all the CDs??? #InquiringMinds 🙂

Abrra…. I have a mixed playlist on my ipod, but if I want to single a CD out for the car, it’s usually Begin. and then Forevermore. I don’t ever play the red, first one. The songs are on my ipod playlist, but that’s the only time I hear them, and there are songs on there that I really like. It’s hard for me with that CD, because that’s the one where David was so pushed and pulled. I just don’t feel like it’s really ‘his’ music, although it’s definitely his beautiful voice ♥.

Did I just go around in circles with all of that? 🙂

Right now the most played is Believe from the November concerts. The CD that is probably getting the most play is No Matter How Far, then Begin, next the self titled red cd. Then all the bonus songs that I love, Save The Day, The Day After Tomorrow, Waiting For Yesterday, Works For Me, Falling, and on and on lol.

*high five* Angelica… I’m a HUUUUUGE Neil Young fan. He’s one of the best songwriters of this generation, imo.

My favourite Neil Young moment happened during the documentary for the Canadian version of “We Are the World” (called “Tears are not Enough”)… David Foster produced the record, bringing in all the top Canadian singers of the day.

When it was Neil’s turn to sing his part, David Foster asked him to do another take because it sounded a little flat.

“Hey man,” said Neil. “That’s my style.”

    😆 😆 😆

David’s voice beats Neil’s by many miles, but whether he can write songs that stand the test of time like “Heart of Gold,” “After the Goldrush,” “Old Man,” “Comes a Time,” I could go on and on …. only time will tell. Would not surprise me one bit, though.

That was a really good journey video. I don’t remember seeing any journey videos for the runners up, not just David, but all of them. When they announce the winner, everything goes crazy. I guess they figure no one wants to see it because of all the celebration going on. What they should do is show one for each of the last 2 standing before they announce the winner, then it will mean more to each of them. David A. so deserved to win that title. But, I’m sure he looked at it with a feeling of gratitude for making it that far. God has a reason for everything that happens, and there was one for that too. There’s definitely a plan for his life that is so much bigger than American Idol. Can’t wait to hear his new album.

Abrra, I think they still do the weekly journey video when someone goes home, but for the finals, I don’t remember ever seeing one. Could just be that I’m getting senile. Once they announce the winner, there’s all the confetti falling and everyone cheering and all the other contestants come on stage and gather around, so I don’t think having a journey video playing would work. Doesn’t really matter though. Now, David has a proper one. And, a better one than Amer. Idol would make.

Thanks for your concern. I am fortunate to be in a relatively safe place by staying home during the storm. It’s the people who won’t or can’t ( I hope they find shelter) stay inside that are at risk. We have provisions to carry us through the storm. My kids are very resourceful 🙂 My experience has been that the forecasts have been worse than the actual storms.

    Tonight
Snow with areas of blowing snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 22. Blustery, with a north wind 15 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 60 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 10 to 16 inches possible.

    Tuesday
Snow with areas of blowing snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 22. Blustery, with a north wind 22 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 60 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 9 to 13 inches possible.

    Tuesday Night
Snow with areas of blowing snow before 1am, then a chance of snow between 1am and 5am, then a slight chance of snow after 5am. Low around 16. Blustery, with a north wind 11 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 47 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

    Wednesday
A chance of snow showers, mainly before 8am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 24. Northwest wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

    David,
None of us have probably felt the same as you do because I believe that you are a child prodigy, something that you may not be able to say. I hope that readers here will read “The Mind of a Child Prodigy”, and understand better what characteristics musical geniuses can have in common.

    http://www.creativitypost.com/psychology/the_mind_of_the_prodigy.

To me, the extraordinary memory, “rage to learn”, excessive detail orientation, and other prodigy commonalities explain your uncomfortableness in verbalizing, making decisions, and being surrounded by adoring fans. My guess is that it’s more natural for you to think in terms of musical notes rather than words, and that you might even have to “translate” to words like a 2nd language. Your special abilities were seen by your surprised parents when you were so completely mesmerized at such a young age with Les Miserables and other music. You even memorized the parts and accents. How old? 6 or so? Then you won Star Search, still at a young age, and was said to be a walking jukebox. So, again, I hope that your fans understand that the ungifted can’t exactly relate to your feelings, although some are introverts.

Finally, I think you’ve been true every step of the way. We all have our different faces….when we meet new people, when we are at work, when we’re with family, etc. None are fake. Know that I have met you twice in VIPs and I was extremely nervous. You saw the real me, even though I am more talkative in other situations.

I think AI and 19 Entertainment are bullies. I can’t even imagine the things that went on behind the scenes. Could these be the ones who were trying to stop David from the MKOCT? It wouldn’t surprise me.

The Hollywood Reporter: Phillip Phillips says he’s been “manipulated” and in a move with huge implications, he is seeking to void his recording, management and merchandising deals with 19 Entertainment.

“On January 22, Phillips lodged a bombshell petition with the California Labor Commissioner that asserts that Idol producer 19 Entertainment and its affiliated companies have “manipulated” him into accepting jobs since he hit it big. In a filing that reveals some of Phillips’ post-show tribulations including being forced to perform for free for one of Idol sponsors and not even knowing the title of his last album before it was announced publicly, the star singer is seeking to void his various agreements with 19, said by the star’s lawyer to be “oppressive, fatally conflicted.”

“I am very grateful for the opportunities provided to me through appearing on American Idol,” says Phillip. “The value that the fans and the show have given to my career is not lost on me. However, I have not felt that I have been free to conduct my career in a way that I am comfortable with. I look forward to being able to make my own choices about my career and to being able to make great music and play it for my fans.”

Wow Dja! Way to go Phillip Phillips!! It’s about time someone stood up to the bullies!! Like he said, AI has afforded him (and David) a boost to his career, but they just go way too far in what they require from these performers. Those contracts must have a lot of fine print that isn’t very clear. I applaud David for riding it out, and then being able to set out on his own highway.

I”m off to bed now, reading a story about the blizzards of 1880-81.
Laura Ingalls Wilder had a book about it, but this is not that.
I didn’t realize that 90 ships sank on Lake Michigan during one storm –
the one in October. It went from 70 degrees to -29 in less than a day.
The trip was from Michigan to Chicago – relatively short. (The ship called The Alpena)
Sorry for rambling lol. I can’t help it sometimes.

Good afternoon! I live about an hour north of NYC and yes we had snow but only about 4-5 inches. The roads are open and busy and the stores are too. They closed the schools based on yesterday’s predictions but they could have been open. At 6:30 am, when the buses would start running, it was no longer snowing here. So the kids got a free day; they deserve it! The wind wasn’t bad either and I had my flashlights etc ready. Have been through worse windstorms where I would put the TV on just to block out the sound of the wind, but I didn’t have to this time. It’s 18 degrees now and the sun is shining. #blessings

You got by so much better being away from the coast. Where I am in southeastern Massachusetts got hit with well over a foot of snow.

     photo jan27snow_zpsiev3kmrg.jpg
View out my back door. The snow is very deep due to drifting from the wind.

It’s still snowing with a total estimate of 2 feet by tomorrow. The good news is the wind wasn’t so bad as to knock the power out. I am thankful for that. As I figured, the predictions were over stated for my area. Cape Cod and Nantucket to the east were hit the hardest.

Nature can be so strange. For someone like me who never sees snow like that, it appears so pure and so beautiful. Yet it can be so dangerous. A true oddity in nature.

    Bebe & Abrra,
I’m so glad you’re both doing ok. I hope the power continues to stay on for both of you and all the others waiting for the rest of the storm to pass.

So far we have been lucky here in KC. But last year we had a 12 inch snow fall…I measured it on my back deck right outside my door. I agree, Abrra, it sure does make a person slow down and recharge whether you want to or not. I actually like it sometimes just for that reason. As long as it’s not a dangerous storm moving through. Knowing KC, winter is not over yet. Tomorrow is to be 73* and the next day back to 40! We have had snow clear into May! That I don’t like! Our slogan is probably like every other state out there, “if you don’t like the weather today, just wait til tomorrow. It’ll change!” 🙂

Lots of damage there. Bebe, so happy you escaped the worst of it too. Jan, would you believe it was 81 here yesterday !! I was in shorts and t shirt. (We need to enjoy the warm up while it lasts ) going to be like that today also, here in north Texas. Crazy . Enjoy your day! 💗. Aw nice pic of D and with Stephanie, writing ,singing at the piano in Nashville. Thank you everyone for your concern about the weather and how the NE fared in the blizzard. Luckily for my area of NY, we got much less than was predicted. In fact, the meteorologists apologized to New Yorkers for the error in prediction, causing subways to be closed which meant many being unable to get to work. Also many businesses had to close too.

Gary Szatkowski, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, tweeted his apology.

“My deepest apologies to any key decision makers and so many members of the general public. You made a lot of tough decisions, expecting us to get it right and we didn’t. Once again I’m sorry.”

    Better safe than sorry.
