Exploring Nashville ~ David Archuleta

Posted by bebereader on Wednesday, January 28, 2015

I have a new disorder, OND, otherwise known as Obsessive Nashville Disorder. I have written about Nashville several times before and here I am again. I can’t get enough of this city that I have never visited. What’s not to like? It’s Music City, USA! The consensus is that Nashvillians are warm and welcoming people; you can find any type of cuisine to your liking; the cost of living is good; weather, usually mild, although they did have snow last week. Having grown up in NYC, Nashville seems like a perfect fit for me; a cosmopolitan city with a cozy feel.

It’s easy to understand why David likes Nashville, too. It has a completely different vibe than other big cities like, Los Angeles. The hustle-bustle that is felt in Nashville is all about music. The town has respect for and is a very nurturing community for musicians. You can’t walk 5 paces without running into someone who plays music or works in the business in some capacity.

“In Nashville, we don’t bug the celebrities when they are in public; it is an unwritten rule of decent behavior and respect. This is one reason why the celebrities like it here.” ~Emifriend, The Voice

Although David hasn’t told us that he’s in Nashville, he doesn’t have to. He was spotted at a restaurant by the name of Tazza last week and Stephanie Mabey tweeted that she had a writing session with him.

Don’t miss this video “36 Hours in Nashville” from The New York Times, sent by Emi.

My curiosity about Nashville this time led me to research the lesser-known places than the famous Ryman Auditorium or The Grand Ole Opry. The places to browse, to eat, to learn, to play, to see shows, to spend one’s waking hours; the interesting places that David may find if he does some exploring when he gets a chance, in between writing sessions. I’m sure Nashville has them; doesn’t every city?

I started digging, but as soon as I got going, our Nashville resident extraordinaire, Emifriend appeared with some great suggestions and I picked up speed! Choosing which to include here was a daunting task but someone had to do it and I’m glad it was me. haha The following list, in no particular order, is a compilation of places I found from research, and suggestions from Emifriend.

Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum

country-musicI would love to see their current exhibit, Kenny Rogers “Through the Years”, depicting the singer’s life in music. Throughout the museum on display there’s everything from Elvis’ gold Cadillac to Taylor Swift’s costume changes from her last tour. And part of the grand tour is a visit to RCA Studio B, where hits like Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” was recorded. http://countrymusichalloffame.org/

Las Paletas Gourmet Popsicles

PALETASSTACK2I remember David tweeting about how much he loves avocado popsicles. I’m sure he can find them here. This Mexican popsicle shop makes natural creamy and fruit-only “paletas,” and customers can dunk their popsicles in fresh chocolate. The smooth avocado and Mexican caramel flavors seem to be the most popular. “Made in our store’s kitchen, Las Paletas offers “cream” paletas that have the texture of an ice cream bar and “fruit” paletas that have the texture of a traditional ice pop. Using fresh, ripe fruit, vegetables and other ingredients including grains, nuts, flowers and herbs from community gardens, we offer 20 or more flavors each day.” http://laspaletasnashville.com/

Centennial Park has a one-mile walking trail, biking trails, gardens, winding paths and a replica of the original Greek Parthenon with a life-size statue of Athena. The Parthenon also serves as Nashville’s art museum.

Pancake Pantry is a Nashville tradition! David has had breakfast here when he was in Nashville. Family owned business since 1961, has a down to earth atmosphere with 23 different pancakes on the menu. There have been celebrity sightings here and it’s Vince Gill’s favorite place for breakfast. http://www.thepancakepantry.com/

The Bluebird Cafe and other such establishments have open mic nights. What is open mic night? It’s a live show in a small club where audience members may perform at the microphone. It’s an opportunity for songwriters, singers and musicians to get the experience of singing to a live audience while trying out new material. I can just imagine David going with some songwriters to open mic night at The Bluebird. Hopefully he would get up to sing and when the audience hears his voice they will be blown away! http://bluebirdcafe.com/index.cfm

Gibson Guitar Factory George Gruhn trades guitars from all over the world here and is world-renown for his expertise with guitars. For trades/repairs/sales, the home of Gibson electric guitars today is “Gibson USA,” built in 1974 in Nashville specifically for the production of Gibson’s Les Paul guitars. The entire guitar industry went through a slump in the ’70s but the spirit of hope remained strong at Gibson.

The Groove Record Shop sells new and used vinyl records and cds. It specializes in hard to find records. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, The Groove will probably have it the next week. There’s always something new to see. They also host in-store performances from bands visiting the area. They offer hours of browsing pleasure. Sounds like a place I could get lost in. http://thegroovenashville.com/

Puckett’s Grocery and Restaurant

26d7c9f6a43e98fbc42cb626a6ee4213(Love this one! Thanks Emi!) “Where the main ingredients are Real Food, Real People and Real Atmosphere! Puckett’s Grocery & Restaurant in Leiper’s Fork, TN is more than just a place to enjoy a good meal. It’s a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. With mismatched tables and chairs and an eclectic clientele of tourists, farmers, songwriters… Puckett’s stage has recently held Tanya Tucker, Rodney Crowell,…Phil Everly of The Everly Brothers…and many more hit songwriters.” http://puckettsofleipersfork.com/history/history.php

The Franklin Theater, where you can see plays, movies and concerts. In 2014, The Franklin hosted sold out concerts for Art Garfunkel, Bret Michaels and Sheryl Crow. http://www.franklintheatre.com/

Tango Grill Parrillada

1405430368004-B6919055977Z1-NAS-RREVTango-0720005I hope David finds this restaurant. The chef is from Uraguay and specializes in South American gourmet food. Homemade empanadas are on the menu among other Argentinian dishes. Take a look for yourself. http://www.tangogrillnashville.com/

To find out what concerts are playing in the venues in and around Nashville, this link is helpful: http://www.nowplayingnashville.com/

So did I sell you on Nashville yet? haha With any luck David will visit some of these places.

Thank you, Emi, for your contributions!

David Archuleta ~ Twenty-Four and There’s So Much More

Posted by djafan on Monday, January 19, 2015

David+Archuleta+0101

I saw Neil Young in concert in Frankfurt, Germany during the 70’s. It was in a gigantic gymnasium, everyone packed tightly together sitting cross-legged on the floor, (yes, sitting). Kind of like a relaxed mosh pit. The lights dimmed. A hush descended. Then this unassuming man slowly ambled onstage as though he was just wandering around and ended up there by accident and proceeded to blow us all away. Half the concert was with the band. The last half was just him sitting on a stool with a guitar and harmonica strapped to his head.

Neil Percival Young is still touring to sold-out concerts at the age of seventy.

I chose these two songs to share because I love them, and because the lyrics in Old Man: “Twenty-four and there’s so much more” and Hey Hey My My: “It’s better to burn out than to fade away” seem to sum up what Neil achieved in his lifetime and capture best what I hope for David.

Martin Luther King ~ I Have a Dream

Posted by Abrra on Monday, January 19, 2015

martin-luther-king-jr-achievements-5

Today in the USA we honor a fallen leader, Martin Luther King Jr. He was a leader not in the political (elected) sense, but in the spirit of humanity. Here is his “I Have A Dream” speech given at the March on Washington August 28, 1963. As many of us here grew up seeing these scenes of protesting crowds on the nightly news, we knew change for the better was on the horizon. We’re not there just yet, but the dream still lives.

Imagine in Paris ~ DAVID ARCHULETA

Posted by sandybeaches9 on Thursday, January 15, 2015

Paris est Charlie, Je suis Charlie,… I am a free man

Charlie (1)Charlie Brown in mourning over the loss of lives after the attack at the Charlie Hebdo magazine which was named in reference to Charlie

After unimaginable tragedy struck Paris last week, the city had the eyes of the world upon it much like after the shocking events that took place in the cities of New York, Boston and recently in Ottawa. As they said then, Paris is the world today as it represents us who join in solidarity for world peace. It was said that these events will become common place events, but there are those who will not allow it to go on for generations. It is really about the decaying relationships between religions that generate wars and all that they say they stand for, when it is social psychological attitudes and the lack of respect for mankind that fuels the rages.

I watched intently as the days unfolded and then over 40 world leaders including kings and presidents came together linking arms in a solidarity march that will go down in history as the decisive moment exemplifying that we must stand together against the aggressors. The strength of world peace commitment was strong in Paris both then and now.

FRANCE-ATTACKS-CHARLIE-HEBDO-DEMO

A Parisian: “I had heard the news about how huge the rally was in Paris this weekend. I had read the reports about what it was like, there on the ground. But until I saw this, this guy turning around his own stereo speakers, to play John Lennon’s Imagine, not just in his apartment, but out the window to the crowd below so they could hear it, until I saw his video of the crowd hearing him do that, I did not really understand how big it was until then”.

credit: PandaInside

There amidst the crowds of millions of Parisians who had gathered for the rally, I spotted a large banner that recited lines from John Lennon’s iconic ‘Imagine’. Parisians looked to John Lennon for inspiration in their darkest moment and broke into song. My thoughts went back to the stage where David once stood, singing the same song, reaching out to everyone who felt the need for world peace. We heard it and his singing related easily to any one of the tragedies that has taken place since then. I can wind the film ahead in time and in my imagination see David singing to the people who value world peace above all else.

There is a place in music now for someone as musically influential as John Lennon, one who is looking at the state of the world and giving what he has to aid world peace.

DAVID ARCHULETA and The Seven-Year Itch

Posted by MT on Saturday, January 10, 2015

calendar

For seven years I’ve been right here
Same house, same job, same chair
Nothing ever changes much
Haha not even my hair

But now and then I get the itch
To grab for something new
I tell myself, ok, it’s time
“What” change is up to you

I usually end quitting a job
Or getting a brand new name
After seven years of the same ‘ole thing
I’m looking to make that change

But though I’m more than ready
To cut something from my life
One thing I know that hasn’t changed
Is the music I know is right

Seven years ago I heard the sound
Of a voice that filled my heart
Seven years ago, I let it in
With no clue at the start

That seven years later I’d still be here
No urge to deviate
Still talking, caring, sharing
Still prepared to wait

Yes, I am prone to the “Seven Year Itch” everyone talks about. Out with the old and in with the new! It really does happen to me. I’ve gotten divorced, once, at the seven year mark, sold and bought houses more than once at the seven year mark, even changed jobs almost always near the seven year mark. It seems I get bored with life and start feeling a strong urge for change.

So, it surprises me that even though I’ve been a fan of David Archuleta for seven years now, I’m having no urge to move on. I’m still as enthralled with his voice as I have ever been, even after a two year hiatus for his mission and almost a year of waiting since his return to see what kind of music he’ll eventually release.

I would have thought I’d have gotten bored by now but it hasn’t happened and it really does surprise me. But, maybe it shouldn’t. Besides the amazing voice, he’s been an enigma from the beginning, totally unpredictable. David is an unusual personality and he continues to surprise me. It may not always be what I’m looking for from him, but I’m certainly never bored!

So here I sit, in the same old chair. Well, actually it’s a new chair and a new computer. But, it’s not a new singer. THAT hasn’t changed at all. I’ve thought about checking out other singers when times were slow, and sometimes I did, but I always end up back here, looking for a song, a snippet, or even a single note from that one special voice.

I’m at that seven year mark right now, in many ways. I just quit a job I’ve had for the last seven years. I’m almost ready to sell my house and move again. I’ve got the itch, bad. But one thing I haven’t even considered is not waiting for David’s new music. No matter how long I have to wait, I’m here. For reasons I can’t even fully explain, my desire to hear that one voice remains steady. Apparently, it has become one of the few things in my life that is not susceptible to the seven year itch.

Sound, Emotion and Light ~ David Archuleta

DoYouHearWhatIHearscreamcap by Bebereader

When I was younger, I often remarked to my Dad that in order to make certain that there would be sufficient energy to run a home, all one would have to do would be to hook up a generator to the handle of the refrigerator. (We had a family of ten at the time.) I estimated that the boost of power the generator would get each time the door opened and closed could keep it going indefinitely. The refrigerator is certainly an appliance that gets a lot of use! And one knows basically what to expect from a refrigerator. It is a common appliance that usually behaves itself.

I could say the same thing about most of the music around us today. That is, that it is fairly common within its genre and I pretty much know what to expect when I open any given “door” in order to get some goodies. I don’t have to be fully awake. I don’t have to be fully engaged. I can rummage through the fridge with my eyes half-shut and my mind mostly somewhere else.

gg61920123

Which leads me to “Dear DA”.

Once, years ago, I posted a comment that went something like this:

“Listening to DA is kind of like a surreal trip to the refrigerator in the middle of the night. I know I am hungry for something, not sure what. So, I trundle along, shuffling into the kitchen expecting maybe – something I might have forgotten about or overlooked. Or something I remember that there might be more of, if not already snapped up by others.

The lights are dim, comfortable.

Then I open the fridge.

And instead of a small, unobtrusive refrigerator bulb to guide my way to the known, I am bowled over with brilliant, white, explosive, sound, symphony, emotion and light. A light that makes me forget why I came to the refrigerator in the first place, and remember instead bigger, better things for which I had no idea I was hungering.”

That, Dear DA, is what happens when I think that I am looking for “something” and find out instead, that Comfort & Joy have found me.

Thank you.
