David Archuleta: Creating The Shape of Things to Come

Posted by bluesky4home on Monday, November 17, 2014

Shapebluesky (1)Picture Edit: Abrra

It seems I am a “shape-changer”.

I have lugged three huge lawn bags filled to the brim, out to the trunk of the car: some things just don’t fit they way they used to. Whether this is good news or bad, I will leave up to the imagination.

However, I found myself thinking of this the other day in relation to DA and wondered how things “fit” for him since his return to the states, his career, and his family.

Like coming home to a “found” trunk of clothes, some fit, some don’t, and some old favorites look different. Each missionary coming home (or anyone returning from a two-year-life-changing-experience) finds that things “fit” differently than before. We are not the same shape as we once were. Neither within nor without. Each person takes their own amount of time to reassess, evaluate, and experiment on the “shape” they are in. Which things are the same? Which are different?

And most of all – What did I bring home with me that I especially want to keep?

DA brought back an even greater determination to be of service to his fellow-man. This is very evident in the choices he has made of when and to whom, he has performed. I do not believe that this means he devalues his “regular” fan base. I think it just means he has sharpened his focus.

We know that he has said how he loved being in the mission-field because the focus was not on himself. I can imagine that trying to keep the focus on what he is doing rather than on himself, is one reason he seems more distant to his fans. It is because of his own goals and what he needs to do in order to achieve them, not from anything the fans have done. We are a diverse and sometimes unwieldy bunch, and we love to focus on him. He on the other-hand, would rather not focus on himself, and he has only so much time and energy. I believe that his ability to balance the demands of a public life and a private one will improve with time and maturity. (When your public is your β€œbuyer”, you simply have to connect!) Yet for now, he wants to be more private. I can respect that.

He is working. Goes to school. Writes music. Records. Travels. Spends time with family. Has told us in different ways that he is working with a variety of music. And… Although he has not sung to us (sigh), I do not believe that that means he does not want to.

It is just that for the first time in his life, he gets to try it his way, in his own time frame, without constant input from outside sources. What a challenge he has taken on! What courage it must take to push himself to stand musically in a place previously denied him, and to hear the echo of his own heart.

He will come. What he brings to us all then, will not be perfect. But it will be as perfect as he can make it. And it will come from as true a place as he can discover: it will be with as much of his soul as he can form into sound.

It will be the shape of things to come.

Oh. My. Goodness, Bluesky!!! This article is ahhhh-sum!!! You’ve really put down some comments that pin the tail right on the donkey!!! I love the whole thing, but this>>>

Bluesky, love your article and the fact that David will be back in his time. He said in his video that “I’m still David, but I’m so different”. And so far I see exactly what he’s talking about. The elder that is going home next week happened to say that he would be happy to be home…that he will be spreading God’s word, but he would do in in his way, when, where and how he wants. That makes me understand David’s life as he is living it now.. I will just keep being patient on getting to hear that fabulous voice. πŸ™‚

  6. A well thought out article Bluesky! A mist enjoyable reading.

David has been so fortunate in his life. . His voice and music have been acknowledged worldwide. His father said years ago now actually at Myrtle Beach that David likes to do things his way and so he continues to accomplish that quest. He has been so fortunate in his life already and while our young men are striving to accomplish world peace, while young doctors without borders are facing their own life crisis, I hope that David finds his most meaningful direction. I think he is on the road by stopping to look around.

I saw the Christmas video in the previous article and considering the hardships in today’s world for any young nan, he was truly in his element and greatly blessed.

David will always have focus placed on him but that is not thought to be a bad thing when his singing worldwide is healing and helpful in so many ways. People being fans and getting excited over seeing him is not selfish if the results of his music are compassion, , encouragement and life changing for listeners in any country, any nationality and any religion that he touches. It may take people watching him to reach his goals.

Right now he is exploring and in a direction to learn. But he has so far had the gifts of wonderful opportunities throughout the world and they all contribute to as he said, building his foundation.

I separate David from any named religion but think of him as a most capable individual, as a person who we think of fondly and respectfully with his own humanitarian efforts, ideals and talents continuing throughout the years.

What a challenge he has taken on! What courage it must take to push himself to stand musically in a place previously denied him, and to hear the echo of his own heart.” So moved by this passage… brought me to tears. Snowangelz have gone fishing and there is ice fishing in the winter!

I saw that TOfan had placed David’s “The Little Drummer Boy” in her message and it was a great time watching him sing his version as we can remember. I discovered “His Most Surprising Performance” video and towards the end when he looked out at the audience with a big smile, his eyes were sparkling. Moments like that were ahha so good. Watch out for your own eyes sparkling.

Bluesky, after reading your exceptional words, I gave you a standing O, literally! I wish every fan, whose patience has waned, would read this. Finally, maybe they could understand what David has felt in his heart, since leaving Chile. He deserves so much respect for how he lives. Waiting is hard, but when we all gather at his first concert, wherever, whenever that may be, it’ll definitely be worth it.
This time next Monday, I’ll be landing in SLC. Hub and I already had tickets to spend the wk with family there…and then the “Celebration of Christ” concerts were announced! I still can’t believe the timing! I’ll be taking 7 family members. My excitement to see David is tempered by all of the fans, who can’t be there. A lot of the joy in going to a David concert, is being with the ‘family of fans’, so I’ll be wishing you all were with me. I don’t have a ‘fancy phone’ so can’t tweet, etc. but I’m sure some fans will.

I so agree with this comment. I honestly don’t think it would matter what religion David embraced, he is who he is. He is a lover of humanity, so he embraces us. He has a talent that he can share, so he does. His ideals are set high, he lives them, and isn’t afraid to share them. He continues to be the example that we all need. He’s a mover and a doer.

At my age my shape continues to change, physically and figuratively lol I think the moment we stop changing and evolving may be a sign that we’ve stopped “living” so to speak.

“It is just that for the first time in his life, he gets to try it his way, in his own time frame, without constant input from outside sources. What a challenge he has taken on! What courage it must take to push himself to stand musically in a place previously denied him, and to hear the echo of his own heart.”

In one of his instagram posts when he took his sisters to school David mentions that this was the first time in 7 years he truly was able to spend this much time with them. Seven years? That means since he was 16 and they were children, wow. I can’t imagine having so much time apart from my siblings when they were growing up. This most probably has been an incredible time in his life.

SB, I going out on a limb to say we will see those sparkling eyes again, soon πŸ™‚

Abrra – First, thank you for that beautiful picture, what a great topping for an article! Second, thank you for your encouragement to post.

Tawna – Thank you, I love your “tail on a donkey’ metaphor. Makes me smile. ^_^

Angelofda – You are one of those fans. I appreciate you.

Jans11 – You are one of my role models. I love your dear service-oriented heart.

Anodrlurker – I love all your new addition to our comments. I don’t do numbers!!!!! *_*

Sandybeaches – I always learn something when you comment. I love how you add multifaceted perceptions. And also how you appreciate the importance of “good influences” in the world, wherever they may come from. They are so needed. Thank you.

Tonette – Thank you for your comment. DA has never been a slacker, and with new freedoms come ever more responsibilities. Like SB mentioned: young people today can find themselves faced with huge questions of “how?” when it comes to adding to goodness in the world. I respect so many in the up and coming generation. When so-called boundaries are gone in one place, they pop up in another, and I can find myself almost wishing for fewer options. I always say that “the amount of resistance equals the potential for change”. When resistance is conquered in each area, then, the impact of motion demands that my forward momentum be guided “true”.

(Erm…just a flight of fancy on the laws of physics and calculus as applied to life. *_*)

Ray – your tender and true heart often brings tears to my eyes.

Oliveoil – *waves* LOVE your name. ^_^

TXNancy – Thank you. How wonderful that you will get to attend! Not sure you are off the hook though, I know a couple of peeps that would love a write-up. Especially where your family is concerned and how they like the show, etc.

Djafan – I know! That is one of the things that I keep uppermost in my mind: DA finally gets to prioritize around what matters most. While he has had many opportunities career-wise, they have often been at odds with his deep love and concern for his family. Those eyes are lit by the flames within. May they always reflect his joy in life and those he loves! Then he can flirt/gleam/laugh/sing/freely all he wants and we can hardly be expected not to completely float out of our seats (like little, connected air-balloons) when his fire catches the collective spirit all aflame.

And…. I want pics and vids from Hawaii!!

I like what you have to say, yes he needs to follow his own heart and I’m ok with that. I am just hurt with one comment he said in his one and apparently last blog, “I never liked doing them.” Well why did he then or say his New Years resolution was to do one a Month? It made me feel like I have been a horrible person for enjoying them and looking forward to them, even worse I from time to time asked for them. He has his freedom to do as he pleases, but he still hurt my feelings. Perhaps he could have just said I don’t want to anymore. I know no one is perfect, not even D. But my fan level is almost nil. Can’t even listen to him sing right now, maybe that’s a good thing. He might be writing music, but I don’t know when or if he will ever have a connection to fans. Guess he will have to choose if he wants us or not in his life. I only hope when or if he does put new music out he will sell enough to have a career. If he chooses to just sing for charities then I hope he can make a career out of that. JMHO Expressing my feelings. Y’all take care!

Rarchiefan, I understand how you feel. Those comments David made about vlogging, however, were pretty honest. He always said he wasn’t good at it, talked too much, forgot what he was going to say, etc. Of course, that’s what made his vlogs so endearing .haha. After being away for 2 years he forgot how to even make a vlog and his sister had to help him. I miss his vlogs, but I wouldn’t take it personal.

    Bluesky,

Thank you for such a compassionate and wise piece on David right now. I love your analogy of the found trunk of clothes to the changes that can happen to any one of us after being away for two years on a life-changing experience. Our perspective on things and people has to change in the process, too. Even something as simple as having two different reactions to the same book because a few years passed since the first read. All due to life experiences and self growth within those years.

“I believe that his ability to balance the demands of a public life and a private one will improve with time and maturity. (When your public is your β€œbuyer”, you simply have to connect!) Yet for now, he wants to be more private. I can respect that.”

I respect that too. I just miss the popstar that I became a fan of six years ago. But I’m waiting for things to come because there’s no better place to be nor is there a better singer out there.

#15 David will be judging a contest! Can’t wait to hear his opinions and to see him on the other side of a competition! Hope we get to see it.

    #20 rarchiefan,
Please stay and continue to chat with us. I hear where you’re coming from. You’re a dedicated fan who is feeling hurt. David’s vlogs were so endearing to us but maybe he was embarrassed or felt inept on the techy side, especially having missed two years worth of changes in technology. I miss the vlogs too but am learning to exist without them. I don’t think we’ve really seen the last of them; just that they won’t be as frequent.

Safe travels to David as he travels to Hawaii.

As for David not liking doing the vlogs is sad but I don’t begrudge him, it is what is at this moment but I agree with Bebe I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of them. It’s all part of that transition and maturing taking place.

    Bluesky,
Thanks so much for your eloquent and thought provoking post. (I just love the way you write/think.) You always look at things in such a positive light. Yes, I can imagine that such a life changing experience would make you view everything a little (or a lot) differently.

I love the analogy of creating the shape of things to come as that is exactly what I think he’s doing right now. He is taking his time to mold his career into his own vision of how he sees himself going forward. It’s been a long wait and I admit my patience sometimes stretches thin, but I’m still here because I know when the masterpiece he’s molded is done, it will have been worth the wait.

While the songs he’s been recording and singing recently aren’t exactly in my favorite genre, I have gotten them and am thoroughly enjoying them. His voice is incredible! I do look forward to the Pop and Spanish to come and can’t wait to hear his new sound. πŸ™‚

    #20 rarchiefan,

I absolutely understand where you’re coming from. You’re not the only fan I have seen/heard say something about that vlog. I didn’t take it as him saying he didn’t like talking to us. I thought maybe he just always felt awkward and a bit inept at it. He did tend to ramble quite a bit and seemed to have a hard time staying on topic. LOL And while that may have been charming to us, it probably made him feel like a bit of a spaz. He may even have looked back at them to see the types of things he might say and went Oh My Heck! I look like a nut! While none of us knows exactly why he didn’t like to make them, I honestly don’t believe it’s because he doesn’t care about his fans.

As to why he’s not making vlogs now, my personal opinion is that it’s because he feels like maybe they should only be made when he has something special to say, like when he announces a new album! Like others here, I think we may still get a vlog now and then, just not as regularly as before, and probably mostly regarding his music.

I hope you don’t stop talking and checking up on David. Please feel free to comment. I think we’ve all felt a little disappointed in one way or another but I think it will be worth the wait. I hope you stick around. πŸ™‚

Very insightful article Bluesky, and what a beautiful picture Abrra. As usual, you’ve both outdone yourselves.

David may have reshaped himself to meet new criteria, I kind of expected that. What I didn’t expect, he has reshaped me too. I have a different outlook on the things that really matter. Not just in music, but life and the way we view others. When I watched American Idol, the year David was on, I could hardly wait from week to week, just to hear his voice. He has spoiled me for everyone else. Now, it’s not only his voice, but his character, and the things he does for others, and his music. He doesn’t just want to crank out any old song just to have a hit, he wants to write something of significance. Most of today’s music is so insignificant that it’s not even worth hearing. I don’t care which direction he goes in, I trust that it will be right and meaningful. I have learned, as I’ve watched since he’s returned, that he knows what he’s doing and he has a mission in mind for his music, as well as his life. I trust that whatever it is, he will be showing us his heart. And that’s the most we can ask of him.

I agree, there is something very soothing about listening to him sing. I was talking about David with a friend and told her that “my ears like David’s voice” and it’s so true. That’s about the only way I know how to explain it.

When I got When The Son Of Man, I wasn’t really sure if I’d like it. So, since we’re confessing today, I’ll admit to listening to it about 50+ times already. I have it blaring through the house on repeat while I ride my exercise bike and it seems like I’m done in no time at all!

Rarchiefan I am so glad you posted on this site. I have always felt this is a site where everyone is welcome to share all their feelings, the good, the embarrassing, the hurt, the angry… The thing for me about this site, is not that you always have to feel positive about where you are “sitting” in Davidland, but that all feelings are accepted. At the core of it, David, the voice and the person, inspires us, so there is always an undercurrent of contentment?, peace? joy? at this site. I forever thank everyone here for this environment.

I think we all have a plan for David we want him to follow, and I am sure these plans have similarities but differences too. Because he is such a powerful “voice” in our lives, it is hard when his plans for his Own life are different than our plan for him. That is what I keep trying to remind myself; to remember it is his life to live, not a life to please me or anyone else. I think he is consistently doing that now. I actively try to let my plans for him “go”.

David will always, because he will always sing, be a part of my life. He enriches my life. I would be a fool to turn my back on that.

    Bluesky#33,

It’s not the ‘cute little’ that I miss. And it has nothing to do with ‘mentally hugging’ him either. It’s the music. We all know that he is way more than ‘just a cute little popstar’. He has a gift and an amazing ability to sing all genres. That’s a given. However, it’s the light-hearted nature of David singing pop songs that I miss. I’m sorry if I wasn’t clear in my earlier comment.

This …. “However, it’s the light-hearted nature of David singing pop songs that I miss.” <<< Ditto! Oh man, how I miss that side of him!! I love the serious songs, and the ballads too, but I also miss the more light-hearted side of him. I miss the smiles and laughter he shared.

and This … "I just miss the popstar that I became a fan of six years ago. But I’m waiting for things to come because there’s no better place to be nor is there a better singer out there." Again, Ditto!! #bestvoice

Ah, Bebereader… No worries, I knew that I was speaking only for myself. There is that mom part of me that likes to participate. Somehow I don’t think that will ever go away. Part of me is just a mom and likes to think back to when he was 16.

(Next month that will be 8 years ago!!!)

I can do denial with the best of them.

I hope that you and I, and all of us get to see and hear that “pop star” light heartedness you speak of again. I think there is a good chance, judging from some of the people he has teamed up with.

    Three things strike me:

The complete silence – you could hear a pin drop. I think this was a form of respect from the crowd, who were overwhelmingly in his own age group. Which leads me to…

How many of them were recording this on their own phones? How many of them will replay it? How many will be uplifted and strengthened in positive ways in their own lives? How many will share it? And will this be of benefit to our world-wide army of young people (as a group, not just LDS) who are set to go out and meet the challenges that face our world? I say, never underestimate the power of one good deed. Or one song. Or one Voice multiplied by many hearts.

Lastly, did you hear his voice crack near the end of the verse in Spanish? This is the heart of the matter, the presence and the soul, the tenderness, the relinquishment to a strength and love that is as real to him as his own hand.

Somehow the thought of him needing body guards at a fireside strikes me as a little funny but I guess any time there is a large crowd and David appears, it’ll be needed. Isn’t it nice to know he still has that “IT” factor? And can I just add, I hope that’s always the case. It bodes well for him drawing large crowds at concerts soon! πŸ™‚

Angelica. πŸ™‚ When I heard it at the PT’s office, I thought I was listening to The Fray. Just sounded like them, and good.
I remember David adding part of their song “How to Save a Life” into Don’t Let Go.
    Hugs back.
I am back to work the first week of December. Yikes. It’s been since the last week of July, time flies. πŸ™‚

Sky, what a cute little story on your “ziplining on the clothesline”! πŸ™‚

Watching the American Music Awards and hoping that David will one day be up for an award. A Grammy would be better but I will take an AMA.

    Just saw this funny tweet:

Nicholas Rice ‏@NicholasARice 26m26 minutes ago

They HAD to pick Pitbull to host this? They couldn’t find ANYONE else? Where’s Lil Kim? Or David Archuleta? ANYBODY BUT PITBULL WOULD DO 😩

Can you get nominated for a Grammy singing a song (Glorious) or just for writing?

    Another appearance for David!

    from
    The Bismark Tribune
    in North Dakota

“Six students from Century High School have been chosen to participate in the National American Choral Director’s Association High School Mixed Honor Choir and College/Community Latin American Honor Choirs in February.

More than 3,000 vocal performance students from all 50 states went through a recorded audition process, and these CHS students were selected: Christian Bowlinger, Jhanvi Patel, Michael Mock, Tanner Woutat, Brennan Tyler and Karter Dolan. They will join the other singers in Salt Lake City for a concert that will include a performance with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, David Archuleta and Sylvia McNair on Feb. 28.”

I believe most of the Grammys are awarded to the singer of the song rather than the writer but I have seen categories for both singer and writer for the same song. I hope this helps to answer your question.

I just can’t watch much of award shows. I think David is so much better than so many of them and hurts to know that he isn’t getting any awards for his beautiful voice! Hoping that I can see him receive some more awards in my lifetime! πŸ™‚ Maybe I sound like an old grandma hen looking out for my chicken, but I was at the concert in Wichita where there were many performers and not one of them was any better than David and yet they are real popular and famous. Bruno Mars was just starting out and look where he is now! I know David is choosing this route and must be happy, so it’s probably just me and I need to be happy for him. I am, and happy for everything that comes our way in pictures and videos. I think I need him to make a vlog for us…a few words from the man himself. πŸ™‚ Please David…..talk to us!!!! πŸ™‚ Ms. Meloncholy here needs to quit thinking……….

Would love for him to receive a Grammy for Glorious! Yes!!!!

If they keep announcing things going on in Feb. and they are close enough, I could make it all in one trip! πŸ™‚
