David Archuleta ~ Grinning in His Face
Posted by djafan on Tuesday, May 27, 2014
Why am I grinning? Because David just followed ZZ Ward on twitter. I was unfamiliar with her work but it is so deliciously Adele-ish. Bluesly, soulful, and with just a touch of sedge. I just made that word up to denote a combination of sexy and edgy, but it’s also an actual word that means a plant that grows in wet ground. And this here is wet ground for dem dry bones to do some serious growth. As much as I like his uncovered work on the red CD and TOSOD, pop music is less adapted for him than the rich environment of this earthy medium. I think his voice was created, breathy vocal paralysis be praised, for this type of music. How many of our greatest singers have roots deeply planted in the soulful, spiritually rich soil of hymns? He is growing. He is a growing force that, I predict if he goes this direction, will be unstoppable.
In the article “David Archuleta and the Blues,” I mentioned the bare bones, soulful artistry of Son House.
“Most blues artists play the guitar but not all. Whether on guitar, or like Ray Charles on piano, the blues is limited only by the soul that can hold it, like Son House, in just his hands.”
Here is Son House singing, “Grinning in Your Face.”
After watching a few of ZZ’s videos I spied this gem. Her cover of Son House’s “Grinning in Your Face.” I hollered so loud at so many places in this, I’m surprised all of cyberspace didn’t hear me.
If the fledgling, sedgling David Archuleta nutures growth in this direction, y’all ain’t even begun to hear me holla.

I think you’ve got something going here, Angelica…. “the blues is limited only by the soul that can hold it,…”. That thought makes me stop dead still and remember the little tidbits of blues we’ve heard come from David’s soul…. I love what I’ve heard. I think it could start an uprising if we were to hear more from him.
Until David, I really never recognized blues, but in the last 6 years, I’ve really come to appreciate the genre and enjoy where it comes from…. the artist’s soul. David’s ability to sing hymns with his soul is amazing. I can listen to someone else singing “Be Still My Soul” and not be fed like I am when David Archuleta sings it. There’s just something that reaches out and pulls my soul into his. God gave him that ability… I know it. To me, the BEGIN. album is reaching in that direction. Let it happen.

YES!!!!
Angelica,
I agree with all you said! (she is really good, and I love that he’s following her.) Never heard her before either
He would kill us all if he goes funky, bluesy soul.. and with a driving beat, and some moves,we’d be toast.
There is so much he is capable of doing with music, he is so gifted!
Tawna,”I think it could start an uprising if we were to hear more from him.” It would!.
I remember when he first sang “Gotta Get Through This” in Nashville (I think that was the first time we heard him do it), ,and did things with just that song, like we had never heard him do before! gah!

Your inspiration is CONTAGIOUS!
I like ZZ Ward and her bluesy sound!
Through the years (yes it’s been years) David has given us clues into the kind of music he likes and the songs have been in all genres. But I notice that he keeps coming back to soul music. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is where he’s at right now.
We are doomed if David goes in this direction. He started out as “The Soul Man from Utah” back in his “Star Search” days. It would be amazing if he came full circle.

Here’s hoping that David will go full circle from “the soul man from Utah”! Soul just oozes out of him, so I agree that it’s a much better genre than the pop route. And Spanish soul is omg awesome! Just can’t wait! 🙂
🙂 Tawna! Would like to see David do a few of those steps.. 🙂 …or maybe the Bachata….oh, yeah! 🙂 Come on David, you can do it! You’ve done the Dougie!
ZZ Ward is really great. David would be so awesome in a small, intimate get together like that. We’d all be puddles on the floor, but that’s ok! 🙂

I love where your thinking is going and your invention of new words. We’ve seen glimpses of soul David throughout the last six years that just drive us giddy. So I say David go for it, all of it. I see limitless opportunities for him. This gives me the chills for what the future holds. Beautiful.

Here is a taste of what he could do. This was spontaneous and effortless.

Angelica, you continue to prove your heart connection to David’s inspired musicality. I am not ever surprised when things you have expressed in the past about David’s artistry, somehow become relevant many years later. Your metaphorical insight is magical.

Hum. Ever notice Dear DA, that there are LOTS of good-looking girls in Utah? Right. Well, I have noticed that you are not quite as stiff looking in the photos as you used to be. I approve. (don’t try out those running shoes just yet, DA! Save them for the concert we are all praying for. You will need them.)

#25 Ray, give it some time. I don’t think we’ve really seen the new David yet, just bits and pieces. And, I’m not so sure what we’ve seen is really new, just things he didn’t show us before so openly. Even though he’s had a two year experience, that few of us can relate to, I don’t think it changed him all that much, just allowed him the courage to reveal himself to us. Whoever he turns out to be is still better than most of those out there today. Also, there’s the voice. No one can match that. I will support him no matter what. He’s such a good, decent, kind human being. So what if he’s LDS. That doesn’t mean you have to be. I guess I just want him to feel free to be who he really is and not have to pretend to please anyone. Ray, I know you love him, just like the rest of us. Don’t be afraid. He’s still in there.

Ray, I’m no Angelica but I can tell you that from my perspective and as much as I want David to sing to us I feel he needs the time and has asked for patience not only to transition but to plan carefully and put things in place step by step. I can’t and don’t want to impose my time table on him or anyone that I respect, admire and love. I have no idea what he feels I can only imagine but his tweets, facebook, and now instagram show me that he is still very much interested in having a career and touching bases with all who follow him.
It seems that many have taken the up coming live chat as something negative because its an LDS event. Well it is but it is an open event that is geared to the youth but anyone can participate. (It will also be livestreamed) I also see it as an opportunity and exercise so to speak for David to be interviewed not only in english but also in spanish. Once he steps out into the limelight he will undoubtedly be asked about his mission and with the activities he has been part of he will be better prepared to field anything that may come his way in both languages because I am sure Spanish music and hopefully a novela are a given. We’ve all watched David’s interviews, including those by the LDS and they’ve always asked questions about his faith, his music and his plans, I see this no different. Not trying to convince anyone to watch, it’s a personal choice but I will be for sure. The title says his music career “postponed” that makes me believe.
I don’t want to discount anyones angst and I apologize if it sounds that way. I know it’s real to all who feel it I just don’t. I miss him and his voice greatly but David to me is not a choice, he’s part of my life and he doesn’t even have to know it. I’m not going anywhere, there’s nowhere to go lol.
So Ray I say immunize yourself, viruses can be eradicated with the right medicine 🙂

25. Ray, I understand what you mean. I’m having a hard time myself.
While I do think he will resume his career, I’m beginning to think it will take a lot longer than I imagined. I’m hoping I have enough patience in me to hold on that long. So far, I’m still hanging in there waiting to see what happens.

Again the question: Will non-facebook account people be able to at lest watch and listen to this event with David Archuleta??
Will someone please get back?? Thank You.

How does a live chat on facebook work? Is the chat session for young people only? Are older folk not allowed?
#19 So now he is singing on Twitter? Isn’t that the song he sang in that performance Gladys attended in Chile? Is he going to sing it on the facebook chat?
So many questions!!!!!!
Oh, and I see he has been busy “shopping around”! LOL Is that why he has no time to vlog??????
I think I need to go listen to that oldie where someone sings about questions hanging from his ceiling low. I can hardly remember how that singer sounds. haha

Anyone can visit and view content on the Mormon Channel on Youtube or Facebook. They are not going to be checking ID’s ya know? My guess is that once folks go to Facebook they will find a link to the Mormon stream and watch there.
Take a deep breath and all your questions will be satisfied on June 24th. 😉

I have a question and no disrespect intended, just trying to understand.
If patience is running out and our barely hanging on and about to let go, where would you go? what would you be doing? And if you do let go and when David does a vlog, sings, puts out music, or anything that is career related will you not listen? Whether it’s next month or three months from now? When he has a concert you won’t go? I confess this confuses me.

Once I realized that the same questions kept being asked ad nauseam with no resolution, I stopped reading negative comments. Its the negativity that can hurt your heart and mind. Negativity feeds the uncertainty that one might feel and cause one to believe what they read, regardless of whether its a fact or speculation. David is on a different time schedule than what we are used to. He said he is writing music. I believe him. Its a daunting task that takes time an perseverance. David is being asked to speak at various functions about his mission in order to encourage other LDS youth to participate. He is a shining example of what a returning missionary is all about. Once the requests slow down, he will have more time to devote to his writing.
When he is ready and prepared, with what he needs to pick up his career, he will let us know. How we deal with the wait is up to each individual. I have chosen to be patient. I will be ready to hop back on the David train when he decides he is ready to roll. Until then, I am living my life and enjoying a positive mindset where David is concerned.

Ray, I don’t think David would ever NOT invite non Lds people to anything he does. That’s what he went on his mission for, to bring them into his flock. He is proud of who he is and like he said, “I am still David, but so different”. I, too, am hoping that he gets back to performing like old times, but if he doesn’t I will accept him as he is. I love his singing and him as a person is just part of my life, even though not personally. I am so blessed that he made the music he has, that I can listen to whenever I want.
Dja, I agree with what you say, “If patience is running out and our barely hanging on and about to let go, where would you go? what would you be doing? I’m not saying I am letting go. I will continue to check in on all things David. But I’m having a hard time understanding the way things have gone since his return. I know that’s not a popular opinion. I know he needs time, but I’m beginning to think he will need a whole lot of time. I’m really glad for David that all of you here are showing so much patience and understanding for him.
Maybe it would have been better if I hadn’t said anything. But I care about all of you here and thought you deserved a bit of an explanation about why the blabbermouth of the bunch has been so quiet lately.
Life is a bit challenging these days. Maybe that’s coloring the way I feel right now. Hopefully by the time he is ready with new music, things will be back on track for me.

MT, we are on the same page and not alone there at all. It is not a place we want to be but instead of guessing every little thing that happens and finding reasonable explanations we are going with the feelings it gives us. We don’t want it this way but it is this way.
His life and feelings towards the future are not the only important things we have to consider. You and your friends and fans we don’t even know who have loved his music, are very important too.
