I love reading Don Engebretson’s blog, The Renegade Gardner. His essay here (scroll down to Black Spot Award, Worst New Garden Product: Thornless Roses) is especially good; so much truth in so few words. He goes on to say,
“It’s the principle of the thing…LIFE HAS THORNS, an eternal and infinite principle perfectly espoused by nature and appreciated best by gardeners. You don’t mess with the material manifestation of universal truths,” and follows this with a quote by Abraham Lincoln, “We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.”
I am aware that some fans are frustrated right now. They are uncertain where David is headed musically and personally. I’d be willing to wager he shares some of those concerns too. He has to go from a selfless life that, “has nothing to do with him,” to a world that again wants to celebrate him. That person he brought back is not going to simply, like Athena, spring fully formed and clothed out of the head of Zeus, but must be created.
The thing I am hearing from fans is that they don’t care about getting music right away; they know that takes time. They want to know if the love for his fans is still there.
Ah, there it is. The thorn that every rose must have. Somewhere between the rose and the thorn, the musical genius he is and the imperfect being we all are, is the man he brought back.
What I came to realize early on (for there is no other explanation) was that I and many of his fans had somehow been caught up in his gravity, our days revolving round and round, held not just by the voice but by a magnetism and star power beyond anything I had ever felt. And when I listen to the Sara Bareilles song, Satellite, we are all the “perfect little satellites spinning round and round this broken earthly light.”
We are all broken. And he will never be nor should be that Someone who loves us from above. But somebody out there still loves us from the ground.

I think that in a way, David is starting all over in his career. Like he said in his video, Things have changed in his family and in the record industry. He has to make some life long career choices in deciding how he wants to move forward. The fact that he didn’t come back from his mission with a definite plan tells me that he really wasn’t thinking of himself while he was serving. He truly did something that wasn’t about himself, like he said.

Of course he still cares! If he didn’t, he wouldn’t be posting a thing anywhere! I’m happy and grateful he is taking some time for himself! His teen years were all dedicated to his career. He’s let us know he is writing and he’s happy! That’s good enough for me! He’s not only laying a foundation for his career, but he is laying a foundation for his life! I’m happy for him! I’m happy for me! There’s a bright future ahead for us all! I just know it! 😀

As Suzy-Q said, A LOT of things have changed while David was away for these two years not just personally but professionally also so he has some major decisions to make that really will change the course of things in his own life, so he needs to take that time to REALLY look at every option available and see what’s best FOR HIM, not what everyone else wants.
Suzy-Q, I definitely understand and agree that he really didn’t think of himself while he was away and for once in his life wanted to do something that wasn’t about himself but other people, which he’s done before of course with some of the charities he supports, but this of course was a more personal thing to him. It’s people like this man right here we definitely need more of today. Can teach some people a thing or two. He indeed is a man of his word 🙂 also need more men like that too haha!!
MunkM, absolutely that man still cares!! He needs to take time for himself also and I too am glad he’s doing that. It’s always good to be there for other people, but you also have to make sure that you take care of and acknowledge yourself *I still need to work on that LOL*
Angelica once again you have written another fine post 🙂 applause to you!! The love for his fans is still there no question about it, he’s just being the ninja he is and keeping everything under the radar until the right moment 😀 he’s good at that haha that’s what keeps things interesting.

I love your posts. They always cause me to think deeper than usual. Your reference to Athena really hit home. I took a class on Greek Mythology in college. I remember thinking at the time that we are so far advanced, intellectually, from these people. Who could believe such fantastic stories? Now, after reading your post and seeing comments from many fans on several websites, I realize that we all worship gods of our own creation, to some extent. Whether he wants to be worshipped or not, and I’m thinking NOT, we have put David on a pedestal and many worship at that altar. Maybe leaving on a mission was the best way he could escape that adoration. And, even though he wants to be appreciated for his music, I would imagine he would not like being hoisted back up onto that pedestal again. However, he does have a strong magnetism about him. We are pulled into his gravitational field and want to follow his every move. I can only imagine how annoying that must be for him. It must feel like being chased by a pack of dogs, constantly nipping at your heels. I know I wouldn’t like that kind of scrutiny. I just hope and pray that people can give him the space to live his life like a normal human being. Because, after all, that’s really what he is.

I couldn’t agree more. Right now, he probably doesn’t feel like “David Archuleta The Star” and he’s no longer “Elder Archuleta.” It must be difficult to figure out how to merge the singing star who left with the man he brought back, creating the man and the star he will become. It will take some time but I think we’re in for something truly amazing when we finally see that man climb up on the stage again. 😀
I’m not frustrated but, as Tawna said, I am curiouser and curiouser about that music! LOL

Angelica, another thought provoking post. I’ve always thought that David still loves his fans. He’s just going at it in a little different way since he brought back a different person and everything else has changed so much in 2 yrs. Otherwise he wouldn’t be sharing with us instagrams and twitters. ♥ I don’t worship him, but I sure love his singing! (some of my family and friends may argue that point, but I really don’t!) I do respect him so much for the moral person that he is and hope he has a beautiful life ahead of him.
And sometimes I think he reads fan sites or else he has ESP!! lol God bless him, he is doing his best! Yes, don’t ya just love him! 🙂

It seems that the frustration on the part of the fans is due to the lack of communication in the way of vlogs. David used to send them often and it kept us up-to-date with what he was doing, almost like a phone call from a friend. He’s sending tweets on a regular basis now but they feel like text messages with pictures. On one of them, he said he’s doing things a little differently this time but he didn’t say exactly what he meant.
Going from two years of selflessness back to a life where people are following your every move … I can’t imagine how it feels for him. As a fan who has deep respect for him, what I can offer now is time and compassion. That’s the least I can do.

Bebe, I agree totally. It must feel strange to him to suddenly be the object of everyone’s attention, myself included. We scour the sites and twitter to glean any crumb he may throw out there. Fans in general are a curious group. We want to know everything we can find out. It’s human nature. We don’t mean him any harm, just the opposite. We waited so patiently for 2 long years, and I think we kind of felt like, when he returned, we would be hearing from him on vlogs, twitter, and maybe even a video of music. And now, knowing that he is so close, it seems like the wait is even harder. Before, we knew what to expect. Now, we don’t. I just keep reminding myself, have patience, it takes time. When he is ready to show us something, I’m sure he will.

This has been a great exchange! In the long run, this current, going with the flow – wherever that goes – with our David, will, I believe, cement the fan/artist relationship even more. WE need to be the less selfish ones right now, it’s proving true – while he starts the long journey of becoming who he will become on THIS side of the mission. One day soon, I believe, he will thank us – most sincerely – for our patience – and, as he looks into the sea of our faces again – or the line waiting, I believe his heart will soar with love – because that’s who he is and that’s what he does. Hold on, folks, he’ll be coming back with a roar soon enough. Until then, let’s just continue to pray for him and love him. The fact that he summoned our input on Mother’s Day and replied to several re: patience is very encouraging. Cuz I know things are gonna get better – and I know things are gonna be fine.

It’s funny that you mention things are gonna get better…. I’ve had that song on replay quite a bit this last week. David things and personal family things have had me in a turmoil lately and when this song came up on the shuffle one day, it became the instant ‘new favorite song’ again. 🙂

There it is. The essence of all the angst expressed by some who have higher expectations than David is ready to satisfy musically. Reality is that he is just a man trying to find his balance between pleasing fans and delivering the best of his craft. The time table to accomplish both simultaneously is impossible. I choose to favor allowing David to take this time to get the results that will stand the test of time, rather than toss out something quickly that does not represent him well.

I didn’t fully comprehend how the adoration must have overwhelmed him along with what is required to have a career as an artist. For someone as humble as David it must have been overwhelming.

This is still a huge question in my mind. I’m at the accepting phase for some time but I still wonder how and why this happened. That magnetism just gets stronger and David doesn’t have to do anything but exist. At my first VIP when David walked towards us we all stood up and applauded, he said “but I haven’t done anything” haha Very telling to me. Some say it’s all about the music, I say at least for me it’s about way more than that. Love this man.

Very interesting take on Ricky’s “Garden Party” song. I never knew the story behind it, never even cared for it, but now that I understand it, it means more to me. I had this bad thought….surely David doesn’t think he would get booed off the stage now that he’s back. He thought he would when he made his announcement. He has to know that we are hanging on every word that he says and picture that he sends! 🙂

That comment reminds me of the song by Sting – Every Move You Make. Or, as some people call it, the Stalker Song. I’m sure at times he feels like he’s being stalked. No matter where he goes, it seems like someone always comes up for a picture with him or puts on twitter where they saw him and what he was doing. How different from his life the last two years in Chile.

Watched part of a Bill Board awards show the other evening. I was sick to my stomach by the time it was over. Where, oh where in all that does David fit anymore? They are such PRODUCTIONS! Nothing at all like our David and his beautiful voice. I know there’s a place for him somewhere, but that looks a bit intimidating. I wouldn’t want to be jumping into that pool. “There’s a place for us (him). Somewhere a place for us (him)”.

#35..Sky, his fingers are double jointed. I seen a pic a few years ago where he had bent his finger clear back. Odd looking.
#36 and #39..David is so much more talented than so many of them out there that has to have gimmicks and such. That does not make a person sing better!! I can’t help but compare him to all of the others. Something I thought I would outgrow, but I still do it and probably always will. It will be hard to get out there among all the smut that’s out there now, so hoping he will do some concerts so us fans can see him sing again. Thought AI was rather boring and predictable. Didn’t like Jlo and wasn’t happy that Caleb won, even though I figured he would since he could never do no wrong. He was the judges pick, so he won. I would never buy his music. Yes, David is the #1 AI!! And always will be in my book.

Those tweets from Stephanie Maybey’s dad are encouraging. Sounds like some good music is on it’s way.
One thing I did notice this week. The winner of The Voice and the winner of Amer. Idol were both throw backs to the 80’s in style. One soul, the other rock. Even though there were others in the competition who were more current and good singers, they didn’t win. Since America is the one voting, maybe it’s an indication of what they want to hear. Or maybe it’s just a bunch of old folks voting (lol). Whichever, I think there is still a place in the music industry for someone who doesn’t go the smutty route and just sings good music. David will find a niche. I have no doubt. As they say, trust the Archuleta.

Lynnella, I don’t watch the AI since you know which season but I did watch a youtube of the winner and his performance, what the heck? Don’t get it. On the other hand I do watch the voice and was very surprised when Josh won, didn’t expect it at all. It bodes will for David and “real singers” taking their place in the industry as it should be.

I saw a video of Sharon Osbourne on Conan O’Brien’s show, rated X of course. They had to bleep almost every other word of hers. She was talking about the singing competition shows. Since she’s no longer on America’s Got Talent, she hates them. She kept referring to the guy who won Amer. Idol, before he won, as Mini Meatloaf. It was hilarious. He’s reminded me of Meatloaf from the first time I saw him. He has a very good, strong voice, and boy can he rock out. I’m just not that big a fan of rock music. I like a voice that is more melodic and soothing. It seems that the girls in particular on these shows now, think they have to scream the lyrics. Some of them have very strong voices, but they shriek everything they sing. It hurts my ears. Can’t wait to hear that voice that is music to my ears and whose sound soothes the savage beast. Not that I’m a savage beast (lol). Just like my music with a beautiful melody and lyrics that don’t require earplugs to listen to. Maybe he’ll give us a little snippet of something soon. Hope so.
