Counting UP – Are We There Yet?

Posted by MT on Sunday, May 11, 2014

Fullscreen capture 5102014 114458 AM.bmp

Well, our countdown is finally over. David Archuleta is home! Yay!!

Now what?

Do any of you feel a bit lost or confused right now? I do. David’s home. He’s not in Chile anymore. But what does that mean in terms of being a fan for the moment?

When he was gone, the countdown made sense. We knew the date he left so we knew approximately when he’d get home. I don’t know about you, but I never really thought much farther than that while he was gone. I had a return date. That was all I needed. I knew he’d be back by the end of March and that was good enough for me. I settled in for the long haul and knew I’d have to find ways to amuse myself. No problem. I did. For two years.

But….he’s home now.  I don’t know what I was expecting but I don’t think this is it. I feel like I’m still waiting for him to get back. And I guess I am because, while we’re no longer waiting for a return, we’re still waiting for something else. Something more. The Music. Because to us, David = music.

Two things are making it difficult for me. First, I’m not really sure what I’m waiting for. There are so many variables, so many unknowns. Will David’s music be the same? Will it change? What type of music will he record? And in what language? Will he be heading to the Philippines? Will he do a concert here in the United States anytime soon? Will he vlog soon to introduce us to “the man he has become?” (I hope we can get reacquainted soon.)

Second, we don’t have a date. We’re no longer counting down, we’re counting up! But up to when? It’s the not knowing that makes it hard.

It’s like being on a road trip and not knowing your destination. If you know it, then you can anticipate if it’s going to be a long trip and be prepared to sit back and relax knowing you won’t be there for quite a while. When you know it’s going to be days in the car, you prepare for it.

A half hour trip is nothing. Just your driver’s license and the car will get you there. If you’re going to be driving for a really long time, you pack an ice chest, you bring iPods and iPads, you pack a bag and book a hotel. The problem is that (even though we don’t mind waiting) we have no idea where we’re going or how long we need to be prepared to wait.

I want him to take as long as he needs; forever if that’s what he needs for HIM.  But for ME, I hope I don’t have to wait that long.

*sigh* It’s the final countdown (or count UP). If only we had a clue.

Dear David,

I’m trying to be patient but can we get a hint? Pretty please? Should I pack an ice chest? Will I need my iPod and iPad?

Thanks,

MT

PS: If you tell me I need to pack a bag and book a hotel, I hope it’s for a concert. 😉

Yes, David = Music and I’m still waiting for …something.

I’m really not asking for much – I’d take a little humming on a vlog, a few lines of a spontaneous song someone captures on video while David is shopping…anything that let’s me hear that musicality again. If we knew David was going to do a Christmas tour, we could count down to November and deal with it. But it is the not knowing that makes it hard.

Great post MT, I know he asked us us to have patience and I do understand but this native is getting restless!

  3. Hi Mt & everyone else. Please be patient. David is a wonderful young man who knows what he wants, and believe me he does! So lets all be calm and relax soon enough we will have our answers. Rome was not built in a day! And patience is a virtue that we all have and should practice it. When you reach an older age you learn that nice things come in very beautiful wrapped packages. Let him have his space for sometime longer. He has very intelligent people who know the music industry. All the best to you David. With sincere thanks to you for having what you’ve done so far. When you are ready, we will know and be very surprised. Thanks again, Fondly, Madeline

I am with you, MT. I don’t know about anyone else, but I had a bit of a challenge adjusting to the new David but that is to be expected. Before he left, we actually knew more than we thought we did about what he was doing because he was fairly unfiltered and I, for one, thought that was what was going to happen when he got back.. That wasn’t realistic. Now, it’s cryptic tweets and instagrams (from him and others) and not a lot of direct communication. That’s ok too, as far as I am concerned because that is the way David is going to communicate with his fans now. He wants us to know he is getting back into music but that is all he wants us to know and that is ok as well. We watched him grow up, almost on a daily basis, for 4 years. Then we didn’t. We weren’t able to connect with the changes going on with him during that time and, now, we are having to learn how to integrate the changes, within him, to how we connect with him as fans. It’s a matter of adjusting to the new David and it will happen – just as some of us have had to adjust to our own children maturing and communicating with us in different ways. He is no longer the boy we all wanted to adopt – he is a man and I, for one, need to let him go so he can come back to us again.

David’s photos that he sends have him writing music so I assume that he is working on a new album and that takes time. He probably doesn’t know how long it will take because when it’s done, it’s done. Then I expect him to tour with the new music. I hope that the new album has some songs written in Spanish. David doesn’t let his fans in on any of his plans until he knows for sure what he is going to do. Just like when he was auditioning for AI, he didn’t tell very many people because he wasn’t sure it would work out for him to be on the show. I just think that he is being cautious and playing it safe.

MT, these are my feelings to a ‘T’. This comment is right where I’m at (with you) >>>> “But…. he’s home now. I don’t know what I was expecting but I don’t think this is it. I will continue to wait… it’s what I need to do. I need to give David time to present what is in his plan, because I need to be a part of that plan whatever it may be.

I have to agree with Suzy-Q… “I just think that he is being cautious and playing it safe.”

But David, could you make a little noise for us? Please?! Pictures are great for the eyes and for creating smiles, but some vocal noise (simple little vlog about nothing in particular) would be amazing for our ears…. and for creating huge smiles! 🙂 *just sayin’

Yes, I clearly identify with this post. David spoiled us before he left with Nandito Ako, all the appearances, and recording several albums. I think some of us ODD fans thought he would come back and jump right back into touring and music. When Kari posted “The best is yet to come” I thought there was a big plan for music when he got back. Obviously that is not the case. It is not David’s fault, but my own over-expectations. I have enjoyed David’s use of Instagram and the “Called to Serve” show. I am now dialing back my expectations realizing that David finally has time for a personal life which he hasn’t had for years. He may go to college and even find his “my kind of perfect”. I will just wait as patiently as I can for the music. I know there will be some from him eventually….

*waves* Good to see you here. How was the wedding? I hope it was all you dreamed it would be. 🙂
I see you got exactly what I meant. It’s not about not wanting to wait, it’s about not knowing how long the wait will be. I’m thinking maybe I should pack my iPod and iPad, get comfortable, and hope for the best. 😉

    Potluck8,
I can sympathize with restless native syndrome. I have good days and bad. LOL

    Bydesign,
Your comment hit on something that makes complete sense. We used to pretty much know what to expect because he was communicating with us differently at the time. There was a sort of pattern of things that we could expect. But the new David is doing things differently. It’s to be expected, but it’s an adjustment fans are still going through.

    Suzy-Q
Thanks for commenting. I understand how you feel. But … we are assuming an album is in progress, expect or hope for him to tour, we each hope for certain types of music, but we really don’t know anything yet. I look forward to the day we are no longer guessing. I guess that’s what this article is really about.

    Tawna,
“But David, could you make a little noise for us?” haha Yes, a little noise would work for me. 🙂

    Grammyj
“It is not David’s fault, but my own over-expectations.” I agree, there is certainly no fault on David’s part. We just didn’t know what to expect.

    Madeline & Ray,
Thank you for commenting. For me, it’s not about patience.

Kristin recently wrote a beautiful article about patience and giving David space to do what he needs to do. I know he’ll contact us and share what he can when he’s ready. This article is about acknowledging that while I understand that and am still here patiently waiting, it doesn’t mean that sometimes my curiosity doesn’t get to me or that my little fangirl heart doesn’t still have wishes of it’s own. It’s about anticipating the day when we no longer have to guess because we’ll know. I didn’t think I was the only one.

I get what you’re saying and that you mean it in the most lighthearted way, as a fan of the artist that you revere and have been loyal to.

To keep ourselves entertained while David was away, we assumed that things would pick up where they left off. That may have been the mistake. Some even started planning his Welcome Home concert and were set to make plane reservations as soon as they got word.

It wasn’t our fault for having unrealistic expectations. This is the first time a favorite artist went on a mission so there was no frame of reference to point to and learn from. Understanding post-mission life a little more now from those fans who were generous enough to share their personal experiences really enlightened us. David isn’t the only one going through some changes; his fans are evolving too.

Diehard fans know that it’s worth the wait, however long it takes.

MT, your heart has always been and continues to be in the right place!

MT: No worries. I don't think there is such a thing as longing "too much" where DA is concerned! I did not hear you say that you were judging him or wishing he were different. You just said you wish you knew there was a time-line or…. something like a timeline.

I heard a story once about an experiment that some people did. There were three groups that were taken on a march. The first was not told where they were going or the distance they would travel. The second was told both… but they were lied to and the distance was greater. The third, was told the correct information. Although all three groups hiked the same path, the first group suffered the most fatigue and had the most trouble keeping up their spirits. They found that groups could march a greater distance with less fatigue if they just knew when and where they would reach the target point.

DA himself, may not know exactly how long the "march" is. He may not even know the "exact" destination. He may be working on more than one type of project. (my personal opinion! ^_^)

    *sigh*

I trust your love and loyalty to DA, MT. Absolutely. And I love your sense of fun. Never loose it!

For sure, we are all on this "march" together, and if we cannot see ahead for the dust or the trees, we can at least sing along to our own rhythms, cheer each other up, lend a shoulder, enjoy the view we do have and appreciate that we have a pretty good bunch of peeps to make the journey with.

    I appreciate you!

    bluesky

(PS: Dear DA – you do realize, do you not, that we are trying to avoid succumbing to our own version of "The Pilgrims March", "A Hundred Bottles of Beer On The Shelf", or ((yes, it has been mentioned)) all four versus and seven choruses of "Tom Dooley"?)

There is only one thing to remember, DA. And this you can be sure of: You love to sing. We love to be sung to.

    MT,

Thank you for writing feelings that are perfectly valid and you have shared them in a spirit of caring and respect. In many ways, the wait during his mission was easier than the aftermath. As you say, we had a definite goal. Most sites including this one, even had clocks counting down the seconds!

Now we understand that we were a little premature in expecting new music right away, to say nothing of the hastily thrown together “Welcome Home” concert/fan convention in Utah. If we had “unrealistic expectations,” they are what got us through the years of waiting.

But maybe it’s time for another vlog besides that early pensive, looking down at the piano keys, somewhat distant and reserved communication to the fans. David, we love you and we are here for you, but we need to hear from you.

If David reads his twitter or any fan-sites he knows that we want a vlog. I wonder if he has decided to substitue Instagram pictures for a vlog. Or he doesn’t feel he has anything to say yet. Of course he could say or sing just about anything and we ODD fans would be happy. I have decided to “Let it Go” as the song says. He will do what he is going to do. It’s David’s career not mine. I will just enjoy what he gives us.

Very insightful article MT, and I totally agree. The wait is over, but the wait has also just begun.

It reminds me of when I went back to college at age 40. I knew what I wanted to do, knew what to do to achieve that goal, and knew how long it would take. Like most women my age who go back to school, I worked very hard to achieve my goal, and was proud to “walk the stage” at graduation. My husband (now ex) and three sons came to graduation, and we celebrated. However, after graduation, it was kind of a letdown. I had no plans in place for a job, and really didn’t know which direction I wanted to go in.

I think maybe David had some of those feelings, and it could take him a while to figure it all out. Although, from some of the pictures we’ve seen, he appears to be working on music, so maybe he’s got a head start. It takes a while to write music for a really good album, and I’m sure David, being the perfectionist that he is, wants nothing better than the best he can do. Our job now, is to give him the time it takes to produce the kind of album that he will be proud to present to the world. It may take as much as six months or more. Some artists work for a year on their albums. Of course, we hope it doesn’t take that long, but if it does, it does. I would rather he take all the time required, than rush because his fans are impatient, and put out a mediocre album only to be slammed by the critics who would like nothing better than to say he’s washed up.

I, for one, will wait as long as it takes. I don’t have to like it, but I will do it nonetheless.

“We’ll find strength in each tear we cry…” “A ribbon in the sky for our love.” May just be that he has so much more of himself to give, that it takes longer to get it all out. He was proscribed before, hemmed in by any number of restrictions on what he could do. Occasional bursts of beauty then, were like random bubbles bursting from a pent-up soda container.

Now, he wants to speak (sing) from perhaps a new, more complete place than he has so far. Guess it is not so strange that it may take more than “5 Guys And A Truck”, to get the delivery moving our way. Probs explains why I have seen so many “Mayflower” moving vans roaming the highways of Utah lately.

It fits right in with what I wrote recently in my May 3rd 2014 article on this site.

“David’s progress may not fit into anyone else’s timeline of success. But he knows himself well enough to set his own pace to get whatever he does, done to his liking. He won’t be rushed to satisfy others. I firmly believe that David will be recognized for his work in music, once he digs deep into his soul and lays it bare for all the world to see.”

If one has any doubts about David’s desire to perform music and continue with his career, I ask that you spend time watching the videos from Dec 2013 in Chile. He learned to be comfortable on stage singing in Spanish. It is strange to say, but I believe that It’s going to take time to get his focus back on English.

MT I don’t have any expectations for when he will bring us into the loop again regarding what he is working on. I am no stranger to “writers block”. Heaven forbid he has that affliction LOL! We will meet the man he has become once we hear what he has written.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts MT. I always look forward to what you have to say.

    My Dear Bluesky ,
I love what you wrote about the three groups walking the same path. So appropriate to our current situation. (How do you and Angelica continue to come up with such perfect quotes/analogies?) And then you talk about 5 guys and a truck. LOL You move me first, then crack me up. Have I told you that I love the way you think? Because I do. 🙂

    Dja,
I hadn’t thought about it till you said it but you’re right. When I listen to him sing, I rarely think of anything else. And like you, I love this place. 😀

    Tawna,
LOL Yep! … curiouser and curiouser …

    {{{Bebe}}}
This: “This is the first time a favorite artist went on a mission so there was no frame of reference to point to and learn from.” I agree. I think, by necessity, the fandom will evolve with him. We’ll learn together. 🙂

    Angelica,
“If we had “unrealistic expectations,” they are what got us through the years of waiting.” That’s so true. It kept us going for many a month. Even though it seems we might now need to adjust our way of thinking a little, I don’t regret one moment of it. I loved the excitement we shared in anticipation of so many wonderful things. It made for some seriously fun chats! It may not come as soon as we thought, but it will come. You and I WILL make it to that concert. 😀 Oh! And count me in on the vlog!

    Grammyj & Jan,
Yep. Singing, talking, humming, even whistling would make us smile. As long as it’s David.

    18. Lynella,
Loved your comment, and that last line sums it up perfectly. “I, for one, will wait as long as it takes. I don’t have to like it, but I will do it nonetheless.” Thanks.

    Abrra,
You are so right about writer’s block. LOL We know what that’s like! I hope that doesn’t happen to David. And thank you this >> “I always look forward to what you have to say.” Ditto! I always love hearing your perspective. More than once you’ve helped me to see the “other side” of things. 😀

Thanks so much for all of your wonderful comments. Fans seem to run the gamut from very Zen to very anxious. Sometimes one fan, the same fan, goes from one extreme to the other. (haha Sometimes that fan is me.) I think that’s ok though, as long as we keep caring about and supporting David.

    Love you guys. ♥

The video vlog that came next left me feeling thrown off kilter.. a little bit dazed and confused,(but then again, David does have that effect on me lol)
As a fan, this experience of watching David return from a mission, has been as new to me as watching him leave on one.Its really helped to have had those here who have been through the experience, to share as they did, those 2 years and also now.
Mentally, and I am mental , I have finally released the "Welcome Home!!" balloons from my hands that I held on to so tightly, but my heart will never let go of that beautiful voice.
Maybe in the interim here,I will try knitting him a scarf? 😀

I was so frustrated because I could not retrieve the password for the little red computer. I was speaking with Abrra and finally…finally she said to go to bed and give it a rest. So I did just that and in the morning the password was right there…Abs I have never won the battle with my patience.

Angelica, I had such a laugh when I saw the cat and dog! I feel the same away about getting older, not that excited unless I was 16, but hey we are here! I texted the picture comments to my kids, there is more then facebook going on…

I love the cake and flowers. Thanks to Bebe, my daughter is baking one to match! The three black labs, well near and dear to my heart!

  55. Thank you for everything everyone!! You are a nice singer Jann’s!

It was a lovely say. We ended up at the shore at a seaside restaurant and a lobster dinner. My daughter had made a lovely cake and it was cool outside so we ate it in the car picnic style. You have to count your blessings! We took a countryside ride home. At dusk we came to two baby steer standing in the middle of the road unable to get back to their mothers. After awhile with the help of a farmer, we got them to safety. People actually stood in the road at dusk to keep them safe from cars. That was the amazing part of the day.

I think about you all having spent several occasions with you getting to know how mischievous and fun the times can be.

My only regret… That I called Abrra (on my cell) who was at the breakfast table (or lunch table) with a group of fans and said that David just got off the elevator. I can’t remember who I was with, but that was really mischievous ( maybe mean!?).

Hoping to hear him sing very soon!

I watched Amer. Idol tonight. Nothing else better to do (hmm, that sounds familiar). Anyway, Alex Preston did a song where he pulled out the drum sticks and banged on a drum, ala Little Drummer Boy. It seems every time I watch a music competition show, something reminds me of the real singing idol. I’ll just be glad when he’s finally singing again.

#56 MT – I thought the name tag you were talking about was the small white button on his left chest and I was wondering how you managed to see his name on that small thing. So I studied the picture closely (ahem) and found that what I thought was, on first glance, the lid of the can he’s holding is in fact said name tag. Silly me!
BTW, is that a very small can of juice or is that a very large hand? That has become an important question when there is “nothing else better to do” in Davidland.
Not so important but still intriguing – is that a can opener on that tray where his arm is resting? I have never donated blood before (I am underweight), so I am wondering why they need a can opener by the side of the donor.

    Fenfan,
As a nurse I cannot imagine needing a can opener to open up a vein. lol. I see on looking at Red Cross drives on the net, they have asked for donations of common items as well as blood, like toothbrushes, can openers, etc. My guess is the can opener is from David.

He has to have a dozen other belts. Is he sending a message to someone? As TOfan revealed on SA, it IS the Josh Bradley belt and he has worn it almost constantly since he got back. There, now Mr. Obvious has made me break my rule to not speculate on his love life. ♥

I believe Ray is right about the belt. It might even be a woman thing LOL or at least a fenfan thing – right now I have only one belt. It’s hanging on the wall behind my bathroom door. I wear that belt whenever I need one.

The blood donation shirt – yes he wore that in Manila.

The elephant shirt – I think he wore that somewhere in Asia (Vietnam, maybe) and took it with him to Chile.

It’s too funny – we are now reduced to analyzing his every wardrobe detail!

Thank you Angelica for explaining the can opener.

I can just see it – Mr Confidence saunters into the blood donation centre can opener in hand, holding it like a microphone, and says ever so casually (to hide his fear of needles), “Hey, David here. So did someone order a can opener and a pint of blood?”

A little late. But happy birthday to Bebe and SandyBeaches!

Things to wonder about…..remember all those songs that were written by him and other folks that didn’t make his album. Wonder what vault they are hiding in or are they lost to him forever? If songs are that expendable, what if we never get to hear the few that we know he has been working on lately…maybe it will take him a while to be satisfied with the project… Fortunately at this point, all we know he needs to please is himself and not a Label so it may not take as long? Just “wonderin'”.

The belt? It’s kind of a nice manly token or remembrance of a very exciting time early in his career. We all have keepsakes from things we want to remember as a good time…no?

I’ve wondered about the scarf…..will it return with him when he sings again, or will he develop some new “signature” item…maybe we solved that for him by getting caught up with his belt. Wouldn’t it be a wardrobe nightmare to carry a bucket of belts around, wearing a new one on each and every occasion!! My hubby only has one he wears all the time…

Must thank you all for all the good “wonderin'” times. Thanks for everyone sharing.
