David Archuleta ~ Getting the Job Done

I watched the movie Jobs recently. Steve Jobs was an extremely bright and fiercely independent man who knew thoroughly the ins and outs of computing. What does this have to do with David Archuleta you ask? David was not even on my radar until I saw an overhead camera panning shot of the Apple Campus. As the courtyard came into view, I saw the stage where David sang Imagine to a crowd of employees and their families. Everyone was having a picnic lunch while David sang and played the piano. After that I got lost in the story again.
Until the very end.
Steve Jobs was seated in a studio as he spoke into the microphone to record a voice over for a commercial. Here are the words he said:
“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
This is where thoughts of David came rushing back to my mind.
The ones who see things differently…
Now you’re thinking, David Archuleta a rule breaker? I submit that he is, when it comes to his art. In his vlog informing fans he had decided to part ways with his label, Jive, he spoke of building a foundation. Not a prefabricated industrially manufactured edifice, but one of his own vision and making. He is laying it down brick by brick. There is a saying in art, “form follows function.” What is the function of what he wants to achieve through his art? When the structure rises into view, it will take a form that will truly reflect who he is as an artist.
When David posted a picture of a songwriting session, fans were happy to see some progress. We looked up who these unknown (to us) artists were and what their music sounded like. I was not disappointed.

You see, I trust his musical judgement. Writing his first song in Spanish was so logical. To me it was as if he was releasing that language that has been in his head for 2 years. Letting it go to make some room for English words to flow again.
So much has been speculated about what his new sound will be. Will he change locations to write with established songwriters? Will a recording label ask him to sign a contract? When is he moving out of Utah to be around more mainstream music? Does he know what fans want or expect from him?
We know what he wants and expects from fans. He told us.
Patience.
David’s progress may not fit into anyone else’s timeline of success. But he knows himself well enough to set his own pace to get whatever he does, done to his liking. He won’t be rushed to satisfy others. I firmly believe that David will be recognized for his work in music, once he digs deep into his soul and lays it bare for all the world to see.

You hit the nail right on the head . He will be recognized for what he creates at his timetable . We have to give him space to creat and thrive. Thanks for your response. Nothing I like more than fan discussions.What David does so well cannot be rushed. It appears that he realizes that he can’t please everyone. When he gets it right for himself, the rest of us will know it too. Anticipating some very special songs by the man he brought back.

When I read your post these are the thoughts that come to my mind:
1. “David is the whole package.” Uh-huh. But… the whole package of … what… exactly? When a young man has: looks, talent, connects with the audience, has just enough “push” to throw himself out there, that is the saying we often hear. However, I kinda think that when they say that, what they really mean is: The “whole package” that makes it easy for them to sell, label, distribute, promote and replicate him. DA is not that package. Not for them and not for us. His art is too personal to him. He is too much of an individual. And he has no intention of being anyones “package” but his own. When he wrote that he wanted to be like Tony Bennett, well, it was then that I quit worrying about him and began to worry that I wouldn’t live long enough to see all that he could do. ^_^
2. “Fans were happy to see some progress”. Well… for me it is kind of like watching the cocoon reaaaallllllllyyyyy closely. In other words: I don’t think he ever stopped thinking and planning and writing and singing and considering…. I don’t think he ever will. It is just that he may not even have the words to describe to us what he sees and hears and imagines. He may have no idea how it will all fit together. He may be “trusting” even more than we are. But that doesn’t mean he does not have a plan. It just means that the plan has not yet taken a form that is easily communicable.
3. I find his choice of companions interestingly compelling. Dustin Christensen: his soulfulness and the tone of his voice reminds me of Dan Fogelberg. Not bad, DA. A very thoughtful choice. Stephanie Maybe: she echoes for me the newer sounds in melody I have heard crop up these last couple of years. She lifts and explores around the “box” as it were. And…. a girl singer singing about other things than love? Yes, they do exist!! (“Lights”, anyone?) Lastly, Brogan Kelly. Brogan has the most “mainstream” sound of the three – but only in-so-far as I have listened. His sound is most like what one might hear on the radio. He also has great skills in producing, editing, etc. his own work. Nice.
I expect that DA will connect with multiple (on multiple!) talents, genres, people, experience, etc. to find the “package” that fits what he sees and hears inside. He is the true “delivery” man. And he will find the way that works for him to deliver his heart to those who want to hear it.
He has been a most patient listener to his own heart. I want to hear what he hears.

That phrase is the exact antithesis of the way David lives his life and works at his career. I am in awe of the foundation David has begun. Trying to please everyone is a big mistake in any walk of life.
Harold mentioned the need for space to create. It is true that you cannot spark genius by twisting an arm. The pic above showing David relaxed on a piano bench surrounded by friends and music looks like a good place to me.

Dear Dayzee – I always read your comments with great appreciation. I love your insights, your personal stories, and your viewpoint. I love it here at The Voice because they accept me the way that I am and do not think I am too strange.
Sometimes I compare myself to others and really wish that I could write more as they do (ask Angelica!!). But Angelica and others here have all taught me that it is okay to just be who we are. That it is okay to “come out and play” together. You are amazing. (not making this up!!!)
The Voice is about DA, and how he makes us feel when he sings. When you “sing”, your voice is true. Thank you for just being you.

David will always be a breaker of the rules of someone that wants to control him. He knows what he wants and if he has a problem arise he relies on the man upstairs to guide him to do whats best for him. Like I said before, he is a brilliant enigma…he has to be, to be able to do what he has accomplished in the short 23 yrs of his life. And THE VOICE..his voice, is his special gift for us fans and we will always enjoy what he gives us, when he gives it. ♥

Abrra, as usual, your written word has inspired me. It really is the smoothie that I needed to energize my soul and lift my heart. I’m one who has been impatient the last little bit, and this article has reminded me that ‘I’ have no control over David and his future. He is the one in charge and he is, as before, doing it the way he feels it needs to be done. I’ve been impressed the last few days with his postings and I especially like the comment “seeing the world differently”. Although it may be cryptic (that’s what has ruffled me lately), it has a leading thought in it. Yes, he’s still here and on his game. I’ll be here when the gun goes off and the game starts. These little preambles to his constitution are becoming important national treasures.

Abrra, YES! You’ve done a great work here. I know we’re all different and I was so anxious to have him back with all ready to hit the road but I was only thinking of me. But here we have David and we’re in the midst of his building, brick by brick, and I’m more than ok with that. I love this, it’s perfectly stated.

I’ve always thought that David marched to the beat of his own drum, dating back to American Idol days when he chose to sit on the floor of the stage rather than choose sides as directed by Randy.
I think I had unrealistic expectations when I thought things would pick up where they left off when David got home. I can’t even imagine what he’s going through now, having to learn how the world has changed in the last two years while at the same time, rebuilding a career. I hope takes as long as he wants and doesn’t feel rushed. I also hope it helps him to know that he has fans who will wait for him.

So would love to enlarge Dustin’s laptop screen to read the words to that song. I really like the quirky, clever lyrics of Stephanie Mabey. Never heard anything quite like her songs. They are a good fit for David. Justin seems more serious, soulful, while Brogan is very electronic pop, if that is the phrase I’m looking for, with a smattering of auto-tune but I like a bit of that, so long as it’s not used to mask a weak voice and his voice is a good one. They all have good voices, but you know, there is one that is better than good. I’m excited to hear what he does with that voice on these new songs and influences. Especially after a period of near musical dormancy accompanied by what must at times have been very enriching emotionally.
Yes, David will always do things his way. I don’t think he’s motivated by money or even fame. I think he “sees the world differently.” He’s a artist and he does art for art’s sake it seems to me. He does it because he loves music and connecting in a meaningful way with the audience. I really think he likes smaller, more intimate venues. Once he said in an interview that he placed a limit on the tickets sold at a large auditorium in SLC, against the advice of TPTB at the time. He said something pretty close to, “Just because I can, doesn’t mean I should.” Snap!
So we wait for what I think will be a pretty awesome album in the not too distant future. I’m thinking this summer will be time enough, lol. But what do I know? We do know so far that he has “one” Spanish song written, (maybe more in the chute?) a song with Stephanie and Justin, maybe two? another with Brogan, a rumored writing session with Lady V coming up in June in LA, possibly others. It only takes 10 songs to make an album and he could quite possibly be half way there.

I’ve been seeing a bunch of wild comments on another (unamed) site, some of which border on hysterical. It’s like these people, who supposedly follow David closely, had no idea of who he really is. How could anyone not know what a spiritual person he is. He’s never hidden it, and now that he’s decided to be a bit more vocal on the subject, people are in panic mode.
I’m glad that he finally feels free enough to share more of that side of himself. Especially, since I’m sure to him, that is the most important part of who he is. I, for one, feel very peaceful inside regarding “the wait” that others seem to be dreading. Some have even gone so far as to say they will quit following him if he doesn’t line up to their expectations. To them I say, have at it. David doesn’t owe anything to anyone, and can do what he feels is right for him. Those of us who are true fans of the man and his voice, want only what’s right for him, not for him to change himself to please us or anyone else. He has to be happy with himself in order to create. I will just be grateful for whatever comes our way. He hasn’t disappointed me yet, and I don’t think he ever will. David, to thine own self be true.

Angelica I did the same thing in trying to see what music was on the laptop. GMTA! I will agree that for David to share all sides of his life is showing he has matured. For me its all about the music. i am not interested so much about his personal life. As long as he is happy and can tap into where ever music takes him to write and perform, I am a happy fan.

Sky Thanks for repeating that quote. I actually got teary as I heard it read out loud in the final scene. It seems to address the “great ones” that we are fortunate enough to share our existence with in our lives. The unique talented people who give of their gift for the benefit of the the rest of us.

Thanks, Abrra. This is the only David site I feel safe and comfortable commenting on. The people who come here aren’t combative. I have posted once or twice on another one, but was almost afraid to see the comments that followed. The people on this site don’t have their own agendas that they are trying to promote. We just love David and want the best for him. Love this site and all of the admins. and those who write the articles. Always so encouraging and never negative. I’ll try to post more.

I was one of those “concerned” (said without shame) fans a few weeks ago. Although, I’ve not been one of those who ever swore off of being a fan. I know very well that it takes time to re-claim who you are when you come home from a mission (or anywhere you’ve been for a length of time). I let go of the reasoning that getting back into a normal routine doesn’t happen overnight. David is having to adjust to North American life again, become acquainted with new family members, and re-acquainted with the rest of the clan, he has things on the table now that he can participate in freely. Things like dating, going to college, and more. He needs to do those things — obviously he thinks so as well. 🙂 Not only does he have all of the above on his plate, but he also has a career that is being jump-started again. He put on hold for two years this career. While he was able to sing and use his voice (lucky Chileans) during that time, he wasn’t able to keep the business fires going. I’m sure that his management kept them smoldering, but now they have got to get some flame going. It appears it’s being fed. I’m finding it easier to be patient as I realize all of this… it sometimes takes me some time, but I usually get there. Thanks, again, to all of you here for keeping me afloat. ♥

Like you I also feel comfortable on this particular site and feel more accepted FOR ME. I dealt more with being judged and looked down upon by some fans because of my age *I’m around David’s age* and how I view the man. Unfortunately you’re right…I have discovered that and it’s left me disgusted and infuriated. It’s sad that some people just don’t see the remarkable man that’s behind all of the celebrity crud!! It is what it is unfortunately…but yeah…these people who follow him closely should TAKE THE TIME to really get to know him, they’d be amazed at what they overlooked. Hopefully one day they’ll see differently…

David NEVER owed anyone a dang thing. That some would quit following him just because of dang expectations is their loss. They want to do that then that’s their decision. Exactly on true fans want only what’s right for him and that’s what people should maybe think about more instead of what THEY want. One has to be happy with themselves with whatever they do above all else and it’s dang refreshing someone cares about that more than the other things famous wise. Need more like that…

Lynnela, Great comment and great to see you posting some more making some very good points. The goal of this fan site is to celebrate David Archuleta, the voice, the artist, and the man. And even when our opinions differ the respect for each other and David rule.
Kristin, You being David’s age and voicing your thoughts on being his fan warm my heart. Some think that David only has “older” fans that the younger fans have moved on the bieber or mahone. And here you are showing that young fans do appreciate David the artist and value his character. From what I see on twitter there are many more.

Just the “for what it’s worth department”…. I have many acquaintances in Mexico through my work. In September of each year they have a big celebration for their Independence Day. May 1st? Not so much. It really is not that special in Mexico as a holiday, while September is.

Thanks to everyone for the kind remarks to my post. I knew I wasn’t alone in my feelings and wishes for David. So glad to hear from Kristin. Sometimes I wish I was that young. Actually, I have a grandson David’s age, and he likes him too. With David it’s not an age thing, it’s a good taste in music and character thing. If I can’t respect an artist, I don’t care how well they sing, I won’t follow them. David has it all.

I used to only care for the latter but David gave me a new perspective, thus why some artists I used to like I now despise and am disgusted by. Everyone is human yes…but there’s so much more to it. So much more…
David DEFINITELY has it all…and he’s definitely proved me wrong. You are definitely not alone in your feelings and what you want for David. I used to think I was alone myself…but sometimes you just have to look around a little to find people who share your thoughts because they’re always there 🙂

There are not too many ways we fans can “give back” to David for all the entertainment he gives us, but we can show him he does have a loyal fan base. I am not someone who votes in the polls for celebrities as I think it has more to do with a particular site wanting hits and not about who wins. The Ryan Seacrest poll is different for me. Ryan is a respected producer in the industry. Who ever wins this poll might actually get some notice or a mention in a trade publication (I can dream). David deserves to be noticed in the business as someone with talent and a fan base who supports him. It will take everything in his bag of tricks to let the world know he is back from his mission.

Leave it to David to do the unexpected and connect with artists unfamiliar to the mainstream scene. We say how bad the music industry has gotten but perhaps it’s because we only know what is promoted by the usual high profile performers. David has such depth when it comes to seeking out new artists. I applaud him for exploring lesser known but very talented artists. He can learn from those who have toiled in the trenches and come out with very good songs to show for it. He is letting these indie folks take him to school.

I saw that movie listed in the Netflix documentary section and you have confirmed my suspicions that it might be hard to watch, for me, just yet. Sometimes when I think of the challenges David is facing to get his career back up and running, I realize it could be longer than I had hoped for. On the other hand I do know that his talent will get him noticed again. Getting together new music is the first step.

Wishing all the ladies on The Voice a very Happy Mother’s Day! Mine has been gone since 1987, but I think of her all the time. My family is getting together here tomorrow for a Mexican food dinner to celebrate Mother’s Day. Going to be a very busy 2 weeks, have a wedding to go to tonight and Nascar is here in KCK tonight also. Then going out of town for a week, then my son and family comes up on Memeorial Day weekend to also celebrate 2 birthdays and 2 graduations! Whew!!!! Calgon take me away! 🙂
