David Archuleta ~ Grinning in His Face

Why am I grinning? Because David just followed ZZ Ward on twitter. I was unfamiliar with her work but it is so deliciously Adele-ish. Bluesly, soulful, and with just a touch of sedge. I just made that word up to denote a combination of sexy and edgy, but it’s also an actual word that means a plant that grows in wet ground. And this here is wet ground for dem dry bones to do some serious growth. As much as I like his uncovered work on the red CD and TOSOD, pop music is less adapted for him than the rich environment of this earthy medium. I think his voice was created, breathy vocal paralysis be praised, for this type of music. How many of our greatest singers have roots deeply planted in the soulful, spiritually rich soil of hymns? He is growing. He is a growing force that, I predict if he goes this direction, will be unstoppable.
In the article “David Archuleta and the Blues,” I mentioned the bare bones, soulful artistry of Son House.
“Most blues artists play the guitar but not all. Whether on guitar, or like Ray Charles on piano, the blues is limited only by the soul that can hold it, like Son House, in just his hands.”

After watching a few of ZZ’s videos I spied this gem. Her cover of Son House’s “Grinning in Your Face.” I hollered so loud at so many places in this, I’m surprised all of cyberspace didn’t hear me.
If the fledgling, sedgling David Archuleta nutures growth in this direction, y’all ain’t even begun to hear me holla.

David Archuleta ~ Expanding the Vision

Been doing a lot of thinking about life the past few days. I reconnected with some family and friends I had kind of lost touch with for a while. That’s so easy to do and they were feeling the need too, but like me, just didn’t make the call. Then I set up my studio in a spare room, got out my paints and brushes, and placed before me a huge three foot by three foot white empty canvas. It’s a scary sight but exciting too! Made a lot of absolutely horrible sketches on paper and felt really good about it! Then I got into bed and the tweet came from David. I lay in the dark with my phone and read the whole article. It was just what I needed to hear.
I want to share a dream I had earlier this week about David. In the dream I was sitting at my computer on the YouTube site, and a new music video appeared with him striding forward smiling. It was all in this cool bluish filter effect and there was a nice beat and just when he came really close and I thought he was going to sing, he stopped and said, “Wait.” Then blank screen!! In my dream I yelled, “Nooooooo!! What are you doing? You have a MAGNIFICENT VOICE!” Then off camera, (or off dream) I heard a loud voice say to me, “STOP! You are looking through a pin hole.” I saw a tiny aperture appear in the distance and through it I could only see a small part of David’s face. All around was this vastness I couldn’t see past but in my dream I felt so much was going on back there. Then I woke up.
It set me to pondering. What do you think is going on beyond our view? And is it, as in my dream, bigger than we imagine?

The Artist and His Fans

“Monsters. Madmen. Mouth-breathing miscreants. Mindless masters of mayhem who should not be forgiven despite knowing not what they do. They’ve created thornless roses.”
I love reading Don Engebretson’s blog, The Renegade Gardner. His essay here (scroll down to Black Spot Award, Worst New Garden Product: Thornless Roses) is especially good; so much truth in so few words. He goes on to say,
“It’s the principle of the thing…LIFE HAS THORNS, an eternal and infinite principle perfectly espoused by nature and appreciated best by gardeners. You don’t mess with the material manifestation of universal truths,” and follows this with a quote by Abraham Lincoln, “We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.”
I am aware that some fans are frustrated right now. They are uncertain where David is headed musically and personally. I’d be willing to wager he shares some of those concerns too. He has to go from a selfless life that, “has nothing to do with him,” to a world that again wants to celebrate him. That person he brought back is not going to simply, like Athena, spring fully formed and clothed out of the head of Zeus, but must be created.
The thing I am hearing from fans is that they don’t care about getting music right away; they know that takes time. They want to know if the love for his fans is still there.
Ah, there it is. The thorn that every rose must have. Somewhere between the rose and the thorn, the musical genius he is and the imperfect being we all are, is the man he brought back.
What I came to realize early on (for there is no other explanation) was that I and many of his fans had somehow been caught up in his gravity, our days revolving round and round, held not just by the voice but by a magnetism and star power beyond anything I had ever felt. And when I listen to the Sara Bareilles song, Satellite, we are all the “perfect little satellites spinning round and round this broken earthly light.”
We are all broken. And he will never be nor should be that Someone who loves us from above. But somebody out there still loves us from the ground.

Counting UP – Are We There Yet?

Well, our countdown is finally over. David Archuleta is home! Yay!!
Now what?
Do any of you feel a bit lost or confused right now? I do. David’s home. He’s not in Chile anymore. But what does that mean in terms of being a fan for the moment?
When he was gone, the countdown made sense. We knew the date he left so we knew approximately when he’d get home. I don’t know about you, but I never really thought much farther than that while he was gone. I had a return date. That was all I needed. I knew he’d be back by the end of March and that was good enough for me. I settled in for the long haul and knew I’d have to find ways to amuse myself. No problem. I did. For two years.
But….he’s home now. I don’t know what I was expecting but I don’t think this is it. I feel like I’m still waiting for him to get back. And I guess I am because, while we’re no longer waiting for a return, we’re still waiting for something else. Something more. The Music. Because to us, David = music.
Two things are making it difficult for me. First, I’m not really sure what I’m waiting for. There are so many variables, so many unknowns. Will David’s music be the same? Will it change? What type of music will he record? And in what language? Will he be heading to the Philippines? Will he do a concert here in the United States anytime soon? Will he vlog soon to introduce us to “the man he has become?” (I hope we can get reacquainted soon.)
Second, we don’t have a date. We’re no longer counting down, we’re counting up! But up to when? It’s the not knowing that makes it hard.
It’s like being on a road trip and not knowing your destination. If you know it, then you can anticipate if it’s going to be a long trip and be prepared to sit back and relax knowing you won’t be there for quite a while. When you know it’s going to be days in the car, you prepare for it.
A half hour trip is nothing. Just your driver’s license and the car will get you there. If you’re going to be driving for a really long time, you pack an ice chest, you bring iPods and iPads, you pack a bag and book a hotel. The problem is that (even though we don’t mind waiting) we have no idea where we’re going or how long we need to be prepared to wait.
I want him to take as long as he needs; forever if that’s what he needs for HIM. But for ME, I hope I don’t have to wait that long.
*sigh* It’s the final countdown (or count UP). If only we had a clue.
Dear David,
I’m trying to be patient but can we get a hint? Pretty please? Should I pack an ice chest? Will I need my iPod and iPad?

David Archuleta ~ Getting the Job Done

I watched the movie Jobs recently. Steve Jobs was an extremely bright and fiercely independent man who knew thoroughly the ins and outs of computing. What does this have to do with David Archuleta you ask? David was not even on my radar until I saw an overhead camera panning shot of the Apple Campus. As the courtyard came into view, I saw the stage where David sang Imagine to a crowd of employees and their families. Everyone was having a picnic lunch while David sang and played the piano. After that I got lost in the story again.
Until the very end.
Steve Jobs was seated in a studio as he spoke into the microphone to record a voice over for a commercial. Here are the words he said:
“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
This is where thoughts of David came rushing back to my mind.
The ones who see things differently…
Now you’re thinking, David Archuleta a rule breaker? I submit that he is, when it comes to his art. In his vlog informing fans he had decided to part ways with his label, Jive, he spoke of building a foundation. Not a prefabricated industrially manufactured edifice, but one of his own vision and making. He is laying it down brick by brick. There is a saying in art, “form follows function.” What is the function of what he wants to achieve through his art? When the structure rises into view, it will take a form that will truly reflect who he is as an artist.
When David posted a picture of a songwriting session, fans were happy to see some progress. We looked up who these unknown (to us) artists were and what their music sounded like. I was not disappointed.

You see, I trust his musical judgement. Writing his first song in Spanish was so logical. To me it was as if he was releasing that language that has been in his head for 2 years. Letting it go to make some room for English words to flow again.
So much has been speculated about what his new sound will be. Will he change locations to write with established songwriters? Will a recording label ask him to sign a contract? When is he moving out of Utah to be around more mainstream music? Does he know what fans want or expect from him?
We know what he wants and expects from fans. He told us.
Patience.
David’s progress may not fit into anyone else’s timeline of success. But he knows himself well enough to set his own pace to get whatever he does, done to his liking. He won’t be rushed to satisfy others. I firmly believe that David will be recognized for his work in music, once he digs deep into his soul and lays it bare for all the world to see.
