David Archuleta ~ Our Gratitude

Posted by sandybeaches9 on Thursday, January 30, 2014

At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person.  Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.”  Albert Schweitzer

This is the magic that happens when writing about David.  I thought yes, Albert Schweitzer you have said it to me and then when looking for that candle, that spark, there was a picture that stood out above all the rest.  David gets chills when the music is awesome to him and my hands started to shake a little on the keyboard when I saw this amazing picture.

I have the deepest appreciation for all that David has given to me through his singing and by the person who he is now and always has been.  We say this expression throughout the years and each time I hear it I am reminded of how lucky in life I have been.

The winter has us locked into coldness and the sounds of the frozen trees echo in the stillness.  For me it has been the perfect time to dwell upon who inspires us.  We can think about what is important and what impresses our minds and souls.  There is never enough time to think such thoughts so it seems.

snowbench(1)

As we continue to enjoy David’s music, we can think about the people who have been bringing the joy of his music to us.  Imagine for a moment if we did not have the pictures, the videos and the bits of news that have trailed back to us from faraway places.  David’s voice is so amazing and sensitive that in listening to his singing voice we actually hear him speaking.  It is such a personal experience when you listen to him sing in any language.  I know the words of “O come O Come Emmanuel” but even if I didn’t, I don’t need to know the words of “O Ven O Ven Emmanuel” in Spanish. I believe that I hear the meaning in his voice. Listening to him is an incredible gift never taken without appreciation. This song has been an inspiration to me that I have not had for a while.

It is time to look around us and see who we have kept company with, those we already know and those who we have just met.  A long time ago now, out of the blue we were talking one night on The Voice Unplugged about the song “Nobody Does It Better” and from that conversation came the first bracelet, “Nobody Sings It Better.” We distributed it as far and wide as we could, taking them to concerts and handing them out as different occasions arose.  It actually became an article to buy on an overseas site.

The second bracelet was quickly thought out to bring his fans together.  They were distributed worldwide as the requests came in.  This bracelet expressed to him and ourselves that he has become a part of our souls.  When David was away for only a while, a message was sent from him to his fans that we are a part of his heart. So that all said and done, we continued to live our lives to the fullest and came to our sites to connect and share the news.

I  recognize the dedication of the sites to keep the fans together when sometimes so far apart, making it possible to continue in our enjoyment of the refined, accomplished, classical singer that David Archuleta is.  Looking at the activities around this site includes the articles which were contributed by the staff and guest writers.  For me, I couldn’t write anymore no matter how hard I tried,  so I have to give so much credit to those who could, when there was hardly anything that I could consciously see to write about.  But in the end of any conversation we might have, it is David through his music, that is still my greatest inspiration.

“It was only a sunny smile, and little it cost in the giving, but like morning light it scattered the night and made the day worth living.” ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald

Sandybeaches, I love your article. I love the tenderness of expression that you have, the deep sense of wonder, that feeling his singing gives me that somehow anchors me while flinging me heavenward – with no boundaries.

(Sooo is there some connection here between DA and Dr Who?……. ((Non-sequiter coming up: Dr Who tells one of his newest companions as he gives her a key to his TARDIS, “I never know ‘why’, I only know ‘who’.”… Kinda feel like I’ve “been there, done that!”))…Dr Who always tells his co-travelers, “This will be fun, safe, and amazing!” Then… all @#%$!&%^$@# breaks loose as they ((and we?)) ascend, unfettered by previous expectations into a new universe, with unknown and unknowable events, that somehow make sense to us and deliver us, renewed and reborn, to a “daily life” that will never look quite the same.)

So, Sandybeaches: I concur. And I am very, very grateful to all (big hugs to admins and commenters here at the Voice) who have kept the place for me. Made room. Kept the home fires burning. Introduced me to lovely people like you.

Big hug. You wrote “just enough”.

  2. SB – Those bracelets you speak of are sitting by my computer. They have been a talisman for me throughout this 2 year draught. I often think what a huge undertaking that was for you. I cannot think of anything that has brought us closer as fans at different concerts and lunches/dinners/get-togethers. I remember that bracelet was the only ID I had to pick up my tickets in Boise after I lost my wallet. It worked for me!

So glad you mentioned our gratitude for the people who have kept the pictures, videos and news bits flowing. They have brought us rainbows and I cannot even imagiine how incredibly dull life would have been without them. Thank you for reminding us of the need for being grateful.

I was so excited to see David on AI last night. I had only watched because it was filmed in SLC. What a great reward for me! The year of the David has begun!

I’m still wearing both my bracelets since I received them! Haven’t ever taken them off, even to shower! 🙂 Thanks, SB, that was a nice job for you to undertake. It was so neat to be able to hand them out before his last concert in SLC! Everyone wanted them and they were gone in no time! Love what they represent, tying the fans together in their love for David!

It was so great to see David on the big screen again, knowing that it was viewed by many from coast to coast! Yes, Dayzee, the year of David has begun!

Thank you Bluesky, Dayzee and Jans,

It is always a pleasure to write about David. It wasn’t until I heard O Ven O Ven Emmanuel that it came to me just how good it was for him to go to his calling when he did because it enriched his life all the while further learning Spanish, the language he is so comfortable speaking and singing. HIs voice sounds so rested and strong. He certainly has increased his career opportunities.

When you are listening to him sing this song, put it on full screen and watch him as he takes his cues from the director, how he loves to be singing. His voice instantly takes you away.

  6. Oh SB, when I saw the Albert Schweitzer quote I had to stop for a second. David has lit something for each and every one of us during these past six years…and I’m one of those people that felt inspiration for life again.

I’m not sure why gratitude for me has been difficult when it’s come to David…I think when you go through so much in your life and all you know is of the pain…when something good comes along you just expect it to be another disappointment. I confess I was wrong about David. He not only is who he says he is but he’s an amazing singer and person and actually cares about what his influence does and can do for other people. If only we had more people like that today…

I really am grateful for some of the fans I have befriended during these two years during his absence, they became more great people to be there…and their support has meant so much to me. I also am thankful for the fans that post videos from his concerts…they help keep my dream of seeing himself for myself alive…and have led to moments of contemplation and understanding. Even though I’m one of the younger ones here…I feel much appreciated.

When I first saw his rehearsal for Oh Ven Oh Ven Emmanuel, I was blown out of my mind and had tears in my eyes. He’s one of the few men, and musicians, that makes me feel that way with music…which is unusual. However, he just connects with your emotions, like he understands how you’re feeling…maybe that’s just me haha.

Either way…I think we all are grateful to David in some shape or form. To all who’ve been working hard with these fansites during his absence I thank you. They not only kept everyone together, it led to new friendships, and helped us understand how truly lucky we are to have David 🙂

God Bless that man…God Bless him indeed…

Kristin, it is nice to hear from you! I found Albert Schweitzer’s quote quite fitting in regards to David and how many lives he has touched with his amazing voice. I think it was only minutes later that I found the picture and once reading about the candle, the spark rekindled, I saw David in that picture. Always a treasure to find someplace!

I am quizzical as to where his fans are, what they are thinking. I know they are there so maybe they are just waiting now until we hear from him not wanting to get hopes up too high until then. I would like to know what they are thinking.

I have a very good feeling that you will see him before too long yourself. Meanwhile, it should be interesting to see the excitement as it builds each day while the time draws nearer.

The most exciting time on line for his fans is when he has concerts and we wait that night for the videos to come in. Almost like being there!

I loved your comments, Kristen, thank you! The first time I saw DA live was just a few days before my mom passed away. I had been caring for her and was worn. My sisters found out that I had a ticket for the concert and insisted that they would take care of her while I went. I went alone. But at the concert – (the AI concert in SLC — where I sat up in the high seats surrounded by Cook fans), – boy – I do not know how to explain it. There we were, so many people and all so very different. Each cheering for their favorites. Yet when DA come out Every Body Smiled. The whole time. It was like a family reunion for people who had forgotten that they were family. It was wonderful.

I still remember the rainy, wet pavement in the parking lot, black against the night and street lamps, as I walked alone to my car. But it was not a feeling of aloneness that I took back home with me.

Somehow, I think this is how it is for the fansites, Sandy – sometimes we feel that we are here alone, but then we look around and DA does his magic. I thank you for being here. ((((hugs)))) I cannot always be here to post.

SB… Your entire article is so good. It speaks to my conscious, as well as my unconscious, thinking. This is where my heart is…..

“I have the deepest appreciation for all that David has given to me through his singing and by the person who he is now and always has been. We say this expression throughout the years and each time I hear it I am reminded of how lucky in life I have been.”

Yes to everything that you said about “O Ven…” . I’ve tried to just close my eyes and let the music take me to someplace else, but Inevitably I end up opening them and starting the video over. I have to watch David. I have to see him, as well as hear him. I have to watch him pull me into that place where he is. I’m so grateful that he can take me there. It’s a good place to be.

I’m so grateful to all of you who have kept the pictures, videos, thoughts, and comments rolling out for the last 11 months. It’s painful to think where we would have been if it had all just shut down in his absence. Hugs to all of you!

    SB,
Just like you I couldn’t get over how incredibly good David’s rendition of O Ven O Ven Emanuel is. The video of his actual performance of it, complete with the noise from the audience, already blew me away so much. Then I got a soundcloud link on Twitter of the audio of the same song where he uttered some Spanish words before singing, and the sound quality was sooo gooood because there was no background noise at all. It was purely his voice and the background music. Ahhh, ab-so-lute-ly di-vine!!! Then I learned later on that it was taken from the rehearsal video you referred to in this article. Whaaat?!? That’s just a rehearsal?!? OMG!!! It just astounds me how his voice and his singing just gets better and richer. I can’t wait to see and experience him live again. Gaaahhh!!!

I agree with you and give kudos to all the admins who’ve kept the fan sites and social media sites alive all this time in David’s absence. I could just imagine the challenges they have in coming up with topics and features to keep every fan connection and enthusiasm for David intact and even more robust. I can say that we as a fandom have been successful at it, just judging by the marked increase (almost tripled) in his Twitter followers and Facebook likes since he left, and the monthly Twitter trends worldwide, in various states and countries. I am so proud of this DA fandom. 🙂

“At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.” Albert Schweitzer <– Ah, this is so true for me. It all started with David, and my life has become richer ever since. I am grateful that he was brought to our attention by a reality show for which he was 'told' to audition. I am grateful that he followed his heart and his faith, no matter where his journey took him, and continues to be the remarkable young man because of it. And I am grateful that because of him, I discovered and connected with many wonderful people who have become friends, and it doesn't even matter if I haven't met them, or some of you, yet. Because in all of them –in all of you– I see the gracious and generous spirit of David resonating in their/your hearts. It is truly an amazing journey so far just being an ODD fan of David. So thank you to all of you fellow Archies. I am truly blessed to know you all!

Before I go, I just have to greet one and all: KUNG HEI FAT CHOY! It's the Chinese New Year here in Asia and it's a great start for the year of the Horse especially because it's The Year of The Archuleta! Don't forget the Twitter trending in your respective time zones!!! :)))))

MT, thank you for your comments. I haven’t seen that picture before. I can see why the sites are more quiet these days with Twitter having all of the latest pictures and almost instant news that travels fast. The sites will have different layouts perhaps over time. With David coming home, fans will be on twitter checking out up to the minute news for sure. I think that the gathering of fans on a web site though is what brings them together when the concerts happens in the east and west coast. Changes, but home is still looking pretty good!

Good morning Bebe, Sky and MT, I enjoyed writing this article. Sometimes things just come together but the most fun is first finding the quote that is relevant and matching it to a picture. If you find a non David picture that blows you away then it has been a great time. It is funny, when David was gone, that spirit left, so it will be interesting to see where it goes from here. I am amazed at the spirit of all of you writers who never were left without words.

I see the transition to twitter but like other things you can lose the personal conversations. I am going to try to start off the day here a little different in the mornings when I come to the site, like a ‘good morning’…I used to do that.

The trending party was very successful last night. My spelling of Canada ended up pathetically like Cobana or something nutty like that. It was time to leave!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on gratitude. As far as writing goes, it sure is difficult when you lose your spirit. It’s good to see that his imminent return has kick started some ideas for you.
I just sent out a Valentines card to him and thanked him for his Oh Ven performances. It just would have been sad with no David Archuleta songs for the holidays.

Please everyone who reads this, send a card. This will be the last special occaision before he comes back. It doesn’t have to be a a fancy card, maybe a funny one. Here is my card. It’s very simple, but its the thought that counts.

    Good Morning all!

SB, yes it’s much more personal hanging out here than twitter and chatting with other fans is always the best. Hopefully when David gets back more will join in the conversation.here 🙂 Twitter is a great place for instant messaging and to let others outside of the fan bubble that David is still relevant and that his fans continue to passionately support him. So here’s

This from Shelley over on FOD.

Many fans have been wondering if David received his 2013 Birthday Book. Shelley was in contact with Kari, and shared the following information with us:

Kari informed me that she still has David’s birthday book. Here is what she said ~

“Hey! I wanted to tell you the bday book is lovely once again. After talking to him when I received it, he asked if I would keep it until he came home because it was something he wanted to keep. (awwww:)) and there was no way with all his stuff that he could. I know I have received lots of questions about the book and if he liked it. I sent pix and he knows about it and is VERY thankful. He just has so much stuff he has collected in the 2 years. It’s (here) in a safe place and will get to him!”
    ~Shelley

I like the idea that David has something special waiting for him when he returns home and that he can take his time to read and enjoy all of the wonderful birthday wishes from his fans all over the world! He can also remember what we all look like since we included so many pictures! A big thank you to Kari for keeping the book safe until David returns!

This is about hardcore, diehard fans, the fans for life…

There have been thoughts, concerns and questions especially lately, in regards to who David’s fans should be. Perhaps they should be of a certain age group appropriate for David. Some feel that older fans should not be actively going to concerts in groups and going on tour as we call it.

So wondering about this I looked up Josh Groban and who his fans are. It is like seeing a reflection in a mirror. I have added a really fine web site that talks about Josh and his fans, their age group going from young children to grandparents. It shows their activities, their charity efforts and most importantly how he feels about his fans and their importance to him. Hopefully in David’s future career, fan’s concerns will be addressed and we will not be left wondering after hearing rumors that are troublesome to us. This is where a PR person is so important.

This should put to rest concerns that have been brought out lately about who we are and is it OK to be an older fan. For example…”The Grobanites are a group of Josh Groban’s most loyal and devoted, die-hard fans. At the start of his career, a group of Josh fans began to form an online community at http://www.joshgroban.com, helping to promote Josh’s career by contacting radio stations and TV programs and generally “spreading the Josh” throughout our communities. We are an energetic, enthusiastic, fun and very diverse group ranging in age from kids to seniors, male and female, from all over the world.”

“To build a fan base like that, they become part of your team and their opinions are very good ones because they begin to know me for everything that I am. They become the real, real fans. It’s very important to keep them in the loop and keep them happy and keep them communicated with. I try to post on the Web site and let them know what’s going on. … They have been really amazing. Their phone calls to the TV stations, the letters that they write, the letters that they write to me, the meet-and-greets that they come up with, the name they’ve given themselves [Grobanites], it’s all pretty incredible. It’s really flattering, really wonderful to feel that kind of warmth from so many diverse places and people.”

“They are a very dedicated, very loyal, very energetic group of fans…and they’re the best, and they’re mine, and I’m theirs. There’s this major kind of mutual love and mutual respect for one another, and they’ve been very, very helpful. They’re just the main hardcore, diehard fans, and they’re the ones that’ll be with me for the rest of my life, I’m sure.” (CBC Canada Interview– “The Interview on the Bed”)

Thanks for the link for one of Josh Groban’s fansites. I actually have a friend who calls herself a “Grobanite”. She’s a diehard older fan. I used to be a fan too, before David came along. haha I wish David a career as successful as Josh’s if that’s what David wants.

Marciami, Thank you! I was just wondering when I logged onto FB this morning why Funny Girl was looking so purple. I purpled my FB and twitter profile too. It was easy and quick. Corporate ka-ching for su2c done! I have a feeling if David were home, his twitter pic would be purple too. 🙂

SB, Glad your spark is back and you’re writing again. Love your wintry introspection, your take on Oh Ven Oh Ven and thank you again for the effort and expense you went through to make those bracelets a reality for every fan who wanted one. You are definitely one of David’s hardcore, diehard fans! Thanks for the post about Josh Groban too. He seems to be great guy and extremely talented and appreciative of all his fans.

My own hope is that David never limits himself to classical material, or just ballads, which is the full potential of Josh Groban. David’s potential is limitless. That has been my unwavering conviction from the start and nothing will change that belief I have in him to do everything and do it better than anyone else.

SB, I think of you often and the time we shared in Gilbert for Constitution Week and getting lost picking up the roses . 🙂 I also have missed your musings and was so glad to see this post. Oh Ven, Oh Ven Emanuel has been on my repeat since first hearing David sing it. His voice is just sublime in that song. I hope he will do it live for us someday, maybe this Christmas (my fingers are crossed!). Thank you also for the wonderful bracelets. They have been on my office desk throughout these last two years, helping me in waiting for David’s return. You have a beautiful, sharing heart.

I may not comment often, but I try to read what’s being said on The Voice. My time is limited these days with running my business and care-giving my beautiful mom. I don’t think she will make it another year with all her medical problems so it’s been a challenging two years since David left, but I’m still here, still have ODD and am looking forward to that first concert to see everyone again and celebrate that wonderful voice together.

Love that picture on the Begin Album from Asia. What a handsome guy!

    SB,
Thanks for the link. I used to be a Josh Groban, even though I never followed him online. But once David came along, goodbye Josh. 🙂

But I do think the fanbases are similar and it bodes well for David that he has such a diverse fanbase from all over the globe. I rarely tweet, but I do read and I am also seeing more and more tweets about David, wondering what happened to him and when he’ll put out new music. I see tweets like this a lot and the names are different every time. I think they are from fans from the early days who still remember him and miss his voice. There are still tons of fans out there. They are not die-hards like us but they are there, waiting for David to reach out to them.

And I’m with Angelica and Sky. Do it all, David. No limits!

Hello Marciami, it is nice to see you here, I remember everyone who I have met at David’s concerts. Thank you for telling us about the campaign to support cancer survivors.

Sweetonda, we did have a great time in Gilbert gathering to give David the many letters from his fans worldwide. It is amazing, but most of us, nearly all of us have had two years filled with the caring of family and doing for ourselves the things we needed to do.

I have never been a fan of Josh Groban mainly because I have never been a fan of anyone except perhaps the Beatles. Josh is a beautiful singer and I highly respect his voice and his professionalism. His duet “The Prayer” with Celine Dion is exceptional. I don’t compare him with David or want to mention what I like more about David’s voice because it is not necessary to compare the greats as they are all highly talented and individual with their own styles.

I don’t think that to date there is any other song by David quite as beautiful. There are places in the song where I am holding my breath so that I can hear every sound. You have to love the ultimate in music to appreciate David, I mean the ultimate. No wonder I flew by myself half way around the world to hear him! Well, not half way around but I think I would!

In a round-about way this is David related– he has beautifully sung this song. I just thought I’d share this since there are several of us that are Andre Bocelli fans. I want David Foster to be involved in David’s life in some way!! I don’t want David to be a Groban or Bocelli because that’s not who he is, but I certainly think Mr. Foster could mentor him and help him create who he really is in his musical career. jmo ♥ ♥

    Good Morning,

The Disney poll? Hmmm I picked tour. He has probably so much material for new music but for $$$ to help with the new music and other endeavors, the “team” etc… a tour would be perfect. BEGIN. Forevermore and No Matter How Far have songs we have never heard live. We all know what happens with his live performances 🙂

David Foster or anyone of that caliber that could support David as he explores his next steps would be instrumental IMO. Foster just finished producing a CD of covers for Ruben Studdard who doesn’t even come close to David IMO.

MT I used to listen to Bocelli before praying David gets all those opportunities that I believe he’s primed for now.

One of the highlights of the MOTAB performances was speaking with David’s grandfather as we left. We talked about David Foster and he thought it could happen in time to come. Look at who has already put their trust in him to advise and work with them in their careers. What better than a highly successful and influential musician who understands every part of what they do. To business people it is business.

Wow! So many gorgeous voices to listen to tonight. Three versions of The Prayer, all so beautiful. Naturally I am partial to David’s version but that takes nothing away from the others. Each is beautiful in it’s own right. I think my ears are just very much in tune with one particular voice. 🙂

    Dja,
I always did like Bocelli and, just like Groban, would make sure to watch whenever either had an appearance/special on TV, still do if I notice it’s on. But, never before would I spazz out if I missed it, not until David. haha I guess that show’s the difference in the level of fandom for each. 🙂 And I too hope he gets all the opportunities he’s primed for.

I don’t know why, but I have this strange feeling that there are already many doors (opportunities) just waiting for David to come knocking. It’s my gut feeling that the doors that open for him will be of his own choosing, and in his own time.

    Angelica,
LOL Love it! That is too funny.

Good afternoon, all is quiet in our fandom. Well it is Tuesday…”You can’t help respecting anybody who can spell TUESDAY, even if he doesn’t spell it right; but spelling isn’t everything. There are days when spelling Tuesday simply doesn’t count.”…I love the simplicity. Thanks to A. A. Milne, from Winnnie the Pooh who never gets any older. I know you are out there Pooh Corner people.

Soon our telling of the years of history in David’s world of singing will become the stories and news of yesterday being replaced by today’s news or what is going to happen tomorrow. We have done a run through of all the pictures even the ones some thought we had not seen but well, they are getting rather old and he doesn’t look like that young fellow anymore. Time has moved on and that is just how it goes, soon we won’t have to live in yesterday and I think it will be exciting.

SB, good to hear your “voice” again. The article really is a mirror image of Archies! “A fan sees David as a great to have an amazing voice and a gift for creating beautiful music.” We all know and feel this in our hearts and souls. We have traveled over many a mile for his concerts and meeting other fans that have become friends. I have never put David on a pedestal to be someone he is not. I find him to be a normal human being with a super talent, but he never flaunts it! I feel we are equal because he makes us feel that way. And, he is so much fun! 🙂
“An Archie is devoted and supporting David by spreading the word however they can.” We are always giving out his cd’s, helping out with his charities and even our fellow fan friends when they need it!
“An Archie is a David fan for life!” We will never let David down as he has never let us down! I have never been in a fan club…ever. And here I am in my later years being an Archie and always will be! What fun David has brought into our lives! 🙂

53..Angelica…so cute! That will be us all, I’m sure! 🙂

The top photo of the snow falling on the bench in the streetlight will be my street tonight! We are getting up to a foot of snow by morning! Ah, Spring, where are you…for more than one reason! 🙂 Looks like ol’ Phil is right…another 6 weeks of winter. Ugh!

I have listened to O Ven O Ven Emmanuel many times probably never missing a day or maybe an evening. I hear possibilities or visualize them such as David singing a song composed something like this as a major song in a blockbuster movie that goes on to become a classic. I also hear him in a big concert hall with a full orchestra playing but I can’t yet see what his concert is made up of. I know that a long time ago, Rascal commented that he hoped to someday hear him perform at Carnegie Hall. Is he getting closer? But that will only be a part of his musical journey I imagine.
