Super Crash Course in Spanish – David Archuleta
Posted by bebereader on Thursday, December 19, 2013
In the past few weeks a large number of fans have lamented not learning Spanish while David has been in Chile. Well, it’s not too late! The Voice is now offering a super crash course in conversational Spanish! Each week until David returns, you will find a few simple Spanish phrases here with the English translation and the phonetic pronunciation, spoken by our own Djafan. The phrases will be designed to use when speaking to David at a VIP or simply for use in a fan letter. Imagine how chuffed he will be when he realizes that we learned a little Spanish while he was in Chile. 🙂
Ready for your first lesson? Here we go!
A mi tambien me gustan los mangos.
I also like mangos.
Hola, como estas?
Hello. How are you?
Mucho gusto de conocerte.
Nice to meet you.
Mi nombre es (Divina).
My name is (your name).
Hasta la proxima vez.
Until next time…
Gracias.
Thank you.
Adios.
Goodbye.
You’ll find the link to this page entitled, “Spanish Crash Course,” on the top of the site. It will contain all of the Spanish phrases as they are added each week. If there’s a certain phrase you’d like us to include, kindly post it in your comment.

This is great! I took Spanish in high school but since leaving California I haven’t used it and I am very rusty so this is going to work for me. When I moved to GA in 1990 there were very few Spanish speaking people. Taco Bell was the only “Mexican” restaurant in my area (Dallas). Now the population has grown by leaps and bounds and there is a Mexican restaurant on every corner. A while back I suggested to FOD that they do this and I would even give them the daily word. FOD didn’t use my words but they did it for about two weeks and then quit. So, I am happy that the Voice is doing it now. Hopefully when I go to another VIP, I won’t get tongued tied and can at least get past Hola. haha

Dja Thanks for the translation.
I wanted to add to what Dja wrote about David’s fluency of the Spanish language. It is almost perfect, still has trouble with the R and J, they are very hard consonants. But I ask myself, “who cares?”. The warmth, the wonder, the confidence the Chilean people received him with was really amazing. Despite the crying children that can be heard in the background in some videos taken by fans I can assure you that Chile will miss David. Maybe David, beyond his talent, beyond his deepened voice has gained something he should have always had. He has gained confidence and showed it to an unknown audience who weren’t aware of his history of being a pop singer (at least most of the audience) But he was perfectly understood. Perhaps unknowingly David found the best school to polish his personality and from what I witnessed he received high marks. It is true as someone said, “the boy we knew is gone, but we’re not sad because the man he has become is invaluable.

Rohdegirl, Hello there! That sure would be hoot and maybe not so random. I tried eating the Philippine mangos because of David as I’m sure many of his fans did. So lets get the word 🙂
Dancer, you’re very welcome.
SB, David has yet again overwhelmed me. The excitement of the fans and the media attention has all giddy for things to come. All these wonderful unexpected gifts from the Chilenos and his church are the icing on a very huge cake 🙂 Like this….

I was speechless about video in #6. I am not anymore! I hope you won’t mind me “going off” a little, in a happy way, of course.
To me, this is the best video I have ever watched of David. In addition to it being well recorded and clear, it’s contents so well represent everything that makes me care about him so much. It is so “David”.
His warm greetings to the choir, complete with waves and asking them how they are, got everyone, including me grinning. His random comment about there being a lot of people there; most of us would only think, not share that, but it is what makes David so unique and so charming.
Then, the adorable shy smile he shares with the director at 2:20, right before he blows the room away with power and passion in the next seconds of the piece
His sincere thank yous and appreciation of their performance, what we expect from David, and he never disappoints.
It seems this whole video shows in 4 minutes of awesomeness, who David the person is.
Oh, and then there is the music. Oh my.
It seemed the music just flowed out of him. I was thinking, he is singing in his “sweet spot”, but the whole piece was his sweet spot! He sang with such a relaxed ease. Of course, the music itself was gorgeous, but David added so much with his God given voice, but also his perfect treatment of the lyrics. I love love love this video. I wish my words could do it justice. So wonderful.
Merry Christmas everyone. Poof

Spanish is such a pretty-sounding language, especially when David speaks in it. The idea for this article came to me several months ago, when everyone was commenting here that they wish they had taken the time to learn Spanish while David was away.
My first experience learning Spanish was in grade school because my fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Yachter, had a degree in languages as well as in elementary education. I picked it up rather quickly but didn’t continue it again until seventh grade in Middle School. And then of course language was a requirement by the time I was in High School. I won an award for conversational Spanish at graduation but didn’t continue it in college so by now I’m very rusty. This super crash course is as much for me as it is for you. 🙂

Oh my goodness, bebe, this is perfect! Thank you!! And, thank you dja for being willing (for David) to put your voice out there 🙂
Gladys, how can we ever thank you enough for bringing David to us for the last, almost, 2 years? Your comments were beautiful. Made me cry.
‘….the man he has become is invaluable’. Why do those 7 words hit me so hard? I mean, after all, he wasn’t a boy when he left he was a man. Perhaps it’s because he has become the man that he has been looking for, and you, Gladys, have witnessed it first hand. ♥
Poof, your words were glorious! So much depth and truth to them. Thank you. ♥
SB, your comment on the last thread … Christmas music with David is awesome… no truer words are spoken! ♥ Too bad the radio stations can’t see that. Their loss… we have the cd’s. But, they are depriving others of something beautiful. Sad.
*off to learn some Spanish* 🙂

This really is a good idea, hoping I will be able to learn more from it. I took Spanish in high school and remember some and forgot a lot. 🙂 Most of my problem were the phrases and I know that will be the same problem as that is why I never learned it while David has been gone. I am going to try super hard to learn as much as I can. 🙂
On a side note, I’m thinking David would be proud of me as I spent all day yesterday shopping for a family with 5 kids ( including 2 yr old twins), where their mom is in the hospital and may have to have her leg amputated. Today, we got them all wrapped and tomorrow will deliver them and will get 18 baskets donated by the church out to needy families. 🙂
Another side note….2 yrs ago tonight was when I witnessed David making his announcement. (Thank you, Dayzee for your hospitality!) And here he will be back in a few months! I shared photos that I took of the concert and SLC with a friend of mine. She is also a David fan but hasn’t got to see him live. She can’t get over how much he has matured since he’s been in Chile. She said “he doesn’t look like a young boy anymore”! 🙂

Jans, that is a most tragic story about the family’s situation. You are doing a wonderful kindness for the entire family. Christmas is definitely a time for caring.
I have given my support to local shelters this Christmas donated by my spoiled four legged ones. They have invited me to visit their premises but I can’t because I would come home with a van full of dogs and cats, seriously. I am here writing at such an early hour because our special rescue lab has made her way on to the bed and on to my pillow now. I will ‘have’ to listen to O Ven O Ven Emmanuel I suppose!!
I know there are many non believers in regards to telepathic communicators but I was having trouble with our rescues and had tried everything. I had heard about a woman who was called to assist with calming some elephants after one of the tsunamis. She works with animals all over the world. So I called her about these two and in our conversation I mentioned how I had met so many of David Archuleta’s fans in different cities. I told her how there seems to be a lot we have in common etc etc. She paused and asked me his name again then she was gone as she does with her communicating. She does tell about people as well as animals but I did not want to ask her about David because it was inappropriate. After awhile she said two words about our whole encounter with him. She said our coming together because of him is magical and then she said angel. I didn’t ask any questions.

I would like to add my delight at seeing David taking one of his little trips to wherever that is he goes. Between 3:19 & 3:25 he shuts his eyes and transports us all. Something I have not seen him do for 2 years now.
My paper chain is so short now. Just a little drape around the framed poster. He really is coming home, isn’t he?

If I get the chance to speak to David directly, I probably will be in the moment. I am not one for prepared comments. What I would like to say in any language is “It’s so nice to have you home, David.”
After today, the winter solstice , the days grow longer as the time until his return grows shorter. I have no expectations or timeline in my head as to what will happen for David career-wise. I accept whatever is given and know that it will be the best he has to offer. The main thing is that he is happy doing what he loves.

some of you may have already come across it. It was a recent comment, and I thought it was so beautifully worded,I wrote it down as I wanted to remember it.
“Straight to the heart… such is the power of music to penetrate to the very core of our beings, to reach us at the highest level of our humanity. This performance is outstanding in so many ways, an irrefutable confirmation of the innate yearning of the human heart to express itself so magnificently in grateful homage to the Divine. Merry Christmas everyone here at The Voice, and a very Happy, Happy Birthday to Marlie!
Tawna21, Although I’ve been making this bread for quite a few years, I can’t claim it as mine. LOL! The recipe came from a Taste of Home cookbook from 1994! Here it is:
1 c. softened butter or margarine
2 c. sugar
3 eggs, beaten
4 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 1/3 c. buttermilk
1 c. chopped walnuts
1 c. chopped dates
1 tbls. grated orange peel
Glaze:
1/4 c. orange juice
1/2 c. sugar
2 tbls. grated orange peel
In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs; mix well. Combine flour, baking soda and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Fold in walnuts, dates and orange peel. Pour into two greased and floured 8-1/2-in. x 4-1/2-in. x 2-1/2-in. loaf pans. Bake at 350 for 60-65 minutes. Combine glaze ingredients; spoon half over hot bread. Cool for 10 minutes. Remove from pans; spoon remaining glaze over bread.
I like to go a little heavier on the glaze! So feel free to adjust to your taste. I also split the batch into 5 mini-loaves, and only bake for 50-55 min.
David’s glorious voice is singing to me in the kitchen as I am preparing 16 baskets full of home made goodies and love for family and friends.
It’s crunch time…

I’ve seen Glad Christmas Tidings featuring David Archuleta on PBS twice this week. I know you know who is featured, but I just like writing it. He looked so spiffy in his green bow tie, green vest and that little green hanky point peeking out of his pocket. And that hair. I noticed his black tuxedo often looked brown under the rosy lighting.
I’m beginning to wonder if I will spend the rest of my life with “canta…canta” playing in the back of my brain.

Music Box: Christmas Cheer With David Archuleta
December 23, 2013
“…So, for years I promised David’s fans to post this performance, and this was the year I decided it was time to share the whole performance of that song. David, Jim and I spent about 10-15 minutes together laughing and enjoying our post-performance, limited time together (missing here is when David offered to help me clean up the mess that Jim made when, during the opening of David singing and at the end of the interview, he threw cotton balls into the air from his Santa bag. Perhaps next year I’ll post the whole thing and not be too concerned at how fat I was at the time.)”

Heard from Gladys!!!!
She asked me to post this. (I did a quick translation)
Saturday Icould not attend to the devotional as I had planned but I think that this happened for a reason. I had everything ready for the event in Talca on Sunday 22, which started at 7 in the afternoon.
It was a 3 hour trip from Santiago de Chile to Talca, but every minute was worth it. As usual David was sensational.
I was sitting in the third row, opposite the pulpit, perfect view and the head of that Church knew we all went there for “the archuleta”. He told us “sisters, there is a new rule now, all women to sit back pews”. I was gathering my stuff to go to the back when he smiled and said,”it’s a joke, I now you all come for the “the archuleta”.
As always he came in with the choir. He sang (I hope to remember everything) Noche De Luz, ahhh seeing David in front of you singing that song is something that cannot be described. Then he sang a Hawaiin Christmas song “Mele Kalikimaka”. This was funny, David did a Duet with another elder and the song was sung in English, except that small part of the title. They started by addressing the head of the stake as he is from Hawaii. He said they would like to dedicate this song as they put on a lei and sang the song. But before they started singing David approached the head of stake and asked him pronounce the title hahahahahah.
(it is the same song that they sing at the devotional at the Temple grounds with a young lady dancing Hawaiian).
He also sang “Mary Did You Know”. He explained that that song was very important to him, that his mother was very important in his life. He said he wondered what the Virgin Mary felt (and david touched his stomach) when carrying Jesus in her womb.
Last he sang “Little Drummer Boy” but somewhat more slowly but with a surprising ending.
Then the church leader who made the joke spoke and said, “this rule of no applause and we all die with desire to applaud for elder archuleta and everyone laughs.”
It stared as fast as it ended I could not give the chocolates to David, so they sit on my table for Christmas, there will be rich chocolates this year.
Merry Christmas girls, Merry Christmas David, Merry Christmas to all.
I apologize if I’m forgetting some songs but I was so close, watching and listening to David, that I forget that why I was there.
