In the Studio With David Archuleta

THIS!!! This video is all kinds of WIN! That’s pretty much all I could say at first about the amazing studio recording we got as a gift from Kari Sellards. I was left almost speechless after the first viewing. I was having a hard time thinking of what I could possibly say about his brilliance in that video. I can’t tell you how amazed I was watching him in action in the studio. I am in awe, to say the least.

Why do I love it so much? Well, I’ll be “shallow” first and say I love the little glance he gives at the beginning, a quick glance directly at the camera showing us he knows he’s being recorded. And let’s face it, he is beautiful with a set of headphones on. I don’t really know why I love that but I do. Love Love Love. Maybe it’s because in my mind he is a “recording” artist and him with headphones while he’s in studio is what my mind feels is a true depiction of who David is. It’s where I feel he belongs. (And on stage of course)  No matter how gorgeous he is, it’s really all about The Voice and the genius behind it.

David in studio, in this video, shows us just how talented he is. And though I have no technical expertise when it comes to music, even I can recognize what a true professional he is, the amazing control he has over his voice, how brilliant he is with improvisation, and how he “feels” the music and is able to so beautifully express himself through perfectly matched vocals. As someone with no musical talent, I would probably be trying to match the music with my notes and tones. But David knows how to take the music to a new level by contrasting his vocals and adding another melodic layer as well as a depth of emotion to the song that can pierce your soul. *sigh* Beautiful.

I’ve heard (seen?) fans say, “What I wouldn’t give to have David at my house for a day so I could pick his brain, or just talk to him for hours.” Me? NO WAY!  No way could I have David talking to me for a day. I’d be a nervous wreck. I love the guy but the thought of talking to him terrifies me. (But in a good way! haha) I am in awe of him and would probably be struck dumb, so that wouldn’t work for me.

But what I WOULD love is to be in the recording studio with him for a day. Not near him, just standing in the background watching. I would pay big bucks to just watch him being himself, recording, improvising, discussing the technical aspects of what he needs to do. And then watching him do what needs to be done, while at the same time adding what he “feels” into the songs. I’d love to watch his mind at work, watch his genius at work. Add to that the wonderful benefit of getting to hear that voice all day, in person. I can’t imagine it getting any better than that.

Gladys, thank you so much for the Wonderful World video. It is beautiful. I would so like to hear David sing that song. It just seems to Davidish. One of the things he has taught me is to be grateful for the beautiful things in this world. Ever since you told us he sang it in Chile it has been my hope to see him perform it.

Sky, I know it takes at least 100 times to watch a David video before you notice anyone else is on the screen. Good job!!

I had a great visit with my son at the Craig Hospital in Denver. The mother of his roommate told me she never thought she would see him get on his feet when they wheeled him into her son’s room. He was pretty much unresponsive, was being fed through a tube in his tummy and could not stand even with help. After 2 weeks at Craig he is walking with a cane for short periods and eating at the table with us. He seems to be about on the level of an 8 or 10 year old boy with a bad memory and flashes of brilliance. He is bewildered that he is not allowed to go back to work. Hoping he continues to improve. He has a wonderful attitude and tries his best at all therapy sessions he attends. It was extremely difficult to leave him.

After being away from home for a week, I was rewarded with the cutting of 8 links from the paper chain. 🙂 Getting so short I have room for more David pics. Haha

    Thank you for letting us know how your son is doing and about the progress he’s making. I pray that he continues to recuperate and has his full health restored. {{{hugs}}}

I really enjoyed your new video! I try to imagine David singing “It’s A Wonderful World” but can’t! I think I have a hard time dis-connecting it from Louis Armstrong. Great choice of pictures and transitions. It’s a simple video but very effective. Bravissimo!

I’m so glad your son has shown so much improvement in such a short time. It sounds like they really know what they’re doing. I will continue to add my prayers to yours for his continued recovery.

Like you, I’d love to hear David sing “What A Wonderful World.” I’ll bet his voice would sound marvelous on it. And Yay for that chain getting shorter! I remember the photo of it and how very loooong it was. Would love to see a picture of it now.

I with you on this one…I love to just watch and soak it in. The lamp adds mucho ambiance.

Gladys–great work. Can’t tell it’s your first time with a video. So talented. Those of us less talented appreciate those of you who share your work with us. Keep it up.

  8. beloirti said

Also, sorry to hear your son is facing such a challenge. Hard on mom, too, huh, Dayzee. Pulling for you all. Bit

I was trying to post a comment and the new post was being posted at the same time. So, I will post that and then comment on this new post. 🙂

Gladys, your video was really great. I don’t know the first thing on even trying to do one.

Dayzee, happy to hear that your son is improving..still praying for a full recovery. You have my empathy on having to leave him. Our kids are always our “babies” no matter how old they get. 🙂

MT, I agree with you on being in the studio all day and watching that great voice in action would be so awesome! 🙂 But I am one that would love to spend the day with him, just hanging. Having a small taste of it at my first VIP, I know that he is super fun and I never felt intimidated by him at all. He is just so easy to be around. He is an all around great person, just awesome. And I’m actually a shy, timid person. I think that with him kind of that way too, I felt more at ease. He probably won’t be that way so much when he comes home, with him growing up the last 2 yrs. But you never know, I’m old enough to be his grandma and I’m still shy! 🙂

Y’all don’t say a word all day and just when I’m about to post a new thread you all start talking at once. lol. Whew! Spamming is hard work! I had to bring these comments over though so they wouldn’t get lost as we moved on.

Gladys! You did it! Just last night in chat you told us you could never make a video, and it was impossible. Now look…your first video is born and uploaded! It’s beautiful and I hope you continue to make more for us and explore this new medium.

Your news about your son is so bittersweet. I know you’re happy he’s doing so much better but this is a hard cross to bear. I’m sure it must have been as you said, “…extremely difficult to leave him.” You are always so upbeat but I think you are so strong and in my mind you are a warrior. My prayers are with you and your son and all the staff at Craig Hospital in Denver.

I will get out the spam wand on myself since Abrra is not here to do it. She would have wanted it that way. 🙂

MT, Yeesssss!! love seeing David in the studio with headphones on, gettin’ down to business.! That video gave me goosebumps.(the screamcaps are now my desktop pics♥
Can’t even imagine sitting in the studio with him.(They would have to put duct tape over my mouth so an eep!,ahh!,oooh!,or ohhh! wouldnt fall out.haha possibly a chair harness also.) But it would still be the best experience ever to be privy to a session like this:))

    Dayzee ,
    So wonderful that your son is up and walking.He really is making great strides in such a short period of time.I continue to keep him in my prayers,and you too, Dayzee♥ You,(yes, YOU!)are a very special lady.{[{hugs}}}

I’m with you; David in the studio would be a gift for the fans. I have felt that way for a very long time. Instead of a regular vlog, I was always wishing for a glimpse into one of his recording sessions to see his genius at work, learning the songs, improvising as he went along. We did have a small glimpse with the video for “Everybody Hurts” and then again with the above video but those were just a tease. Something a little longer would be great!

I know we discussed this but how cool would it be if David’s team held a raffle or contest with the prize being “Spend some time with David in the studio”? I bet that would cause quite a riot, in trying to win the contest! LOL

  13. betsy said

MT, I absolutely love the glimpses into his recording genius. When the day comes that he records his first live cd, he should sell a cd AND a dvd as well.
    I’d buy it. 🙂
Bebe, I love the idea of that contest. He should totally do it. Arggghhhh, I’d never enter it though.

Today marks the first time I saw him in concert, met him, etc. The best time ever.

I MEANT to say – 4 years ago today. How did 4 years pass by so suddenly?

MT!! I am dashing in and out… but I had to say “I loved the vid, too when I first saw it and thought to myself: this needs an article!! Glad you complied. ^_^” Love you tons.

  16. Angelica said

Finally going to comment on your article since last night I was too pooped to do it justice. I would love to spend a day watching and listening to David in the studio. I love the serious way he goes about his work and how focused he is. It’s one thing to see him perform on stage, and it’s a wonderful thing too, but hearing him live in a small room is absolutely thrilling. Hard to explain what it feels like but that voice in that little room in Lafayette, La. at my one and only VIP- he sang Crazy and Heaven. I think it was Heaven. My mind took a vacation but I know there was sound and it was so beautiful I could hardly breathe. All I could do was stare and marvel at what I was hearing coming from one rather diminutive young man with the face of an angelic child. It was Heaven.

  17. bebereader said

“…I love the idea of that contest. He should totally do it. Arggghhhh, I’d never enter it though…”

    Neither would I, Betsy.
By the way that was all MT’s idea, although I would love to take credit for it.;)

Happy One Year Grand Rapids Anniversary, Betsy 🙂

  18. MT said

Ahh, to” just watch and soak it in.” Wouldn’t it make for an amazing day?

You make talking to him sound so easy. I’ve never met him but I’ve heard so much about how some fans just completely lose focus it kind of scares me. Of course I plan to try to meet him anyway. LOL I’ll let you guys know how that goes. 😉

I am ROFL at the visual of you with duct tape and a harness. haha If they ever did the contest Bebe mentioned and you won, we MUST have video! LOLOL

“Instead of a regular vlog, I was always wishing for a glimpse into one of his recording sessions to see his genius at work …” Yep, a nice long one that lasts more than a minute would be nice!

And if they hold that contest, I’ll be sending my entry in! haha And one for Sky!

Live CD & DVD??? Oh yea, I’d buy one of those too!

{{hugs}} haha Yep, it definitely deserved a post of it’s own. 🙂

When you said, “I love the serious way he goes about his work and how focused he is.” Maybe that’s it. In studio he’s not “on” and trying to entertain. I love seeing that side of him. It feels like a glimpse into David’s future. IDK if I’m even making sense. LOL I hope you get what I mean.

Angelica, and this : “My mind took a vacation but I know there was sound” hahaha and people wonder why the thought of meeting him scares me?

  19. MT said

” that little room in Lafayette, La”

*sigh* That was the concert I was planning to attend. But it was hubby’s birthday. 😦 😦

Next time, I don’t care who’s birthday it is. I’m going!!

  20. Dayzee said

I appreciate all your kind thoughts for me and my son. Thanks for your prayers and for caring.

MT, I am so glad you wrote about this video and gave us a chance to express how much it affected us Just when I thought Kari had run out of goodies and we weren’t going to get anything until David came back. First, the Dougie was so much fun, and then comes this jaw-dropping EH recording snippet. It is a pleasure to be able to see his masterful touch as he records. Like Sky, I couldn’t wait to get that sceamcap up on my desktop. Abrra was so kind to get those up so quickly.

I would love to spend some time in the studio watching David. A lot of time. Angelica mentioned hearing him in a small room is thrilling. It always amazes me how much he gives to even a small group of fans.

    Missing him.

  21. tawna21 said

The truth is out… David in the studio makes my heart stop dead still!! I would love, love, love to be in one of his ‘work’ sessions (don’t they have take a fan to work day?). I would be so quiet (dead quiet probably). I just can’t even imagine what it would be like to be there. We’ve heard both Richard Parkinson and Kurt Bestor describe their unbelievable experiences while there, and if it’s that amazing for them can you just imagine what it would be like for any of us non-professionals?!

Thank you MT for posting this EH video. It’s one of those that gets to repeat, repeat and then again.

Dayzee, hugs and prayers for you and your precious son. I just can’t even imagine what you are going thru with all of this. It’s so good to hear of his huge improvements. It’s truly mind boggling what can happen when you get the proper treatments and care. I’m so glad you were directed to the Craig Hospital. God bless you both with the strength and courage you need to press forward on this long road to his recovery. You are a strong lady, dear friend.

Where is Abrra? I’ve been so seriously involved in family stuff lately that getting to chat is impossible. I have a tough time even getting here to this most amazing ‘home sweet home for all the good David ramblings and musings’. I really miss it and hope things level out soon.

Thank you all for being here.
    Missing David ♥

Abrra is on a job where internet connection is not possible until the 24th. Spam week!!!!

“don’t they have take a fan to work day?” *snort* You would think, right? Count me in with you. Or the contest to spend the day with him just talking.

Bebe and Betsy, you would never enter that contest? Why ever not?

MT, next time you are coming with!

  23. jans11 said

What on earth is the name of the “Build a Bear” song?? Can’t remember it! Anyway, the snippet above reminds me of the video of him in the studio singing it and the lady at the controls loving it all! I love that video! ♥

Angelica, that’s the same songs he sang at my first VIP…Heaven and Crazy! And that’s where I was, both at the same time listening to that marvelous sound coming out of that marvelous person! ♥

  24. tawna21 said

    Thanks, Angelica 🙂

    Betsy, Bebe,
You wouldn’t enter a contest like that??? Why not ?!??!

Don’t you just love those little “gifts” Kari gives us? I hope she has a few more to carry us into 2014. 🙂

“We’ve heard both Richard Parkinson and Kurt Bestor describe their unbelievable experiences while there, and if it’s that amazing for them can you just imagine what it would be like for any of us non-professionals?!” I know, right!?! I can’t even imagine!

Oh, and repeat???? haha Yeah, I’m not going to admit how many times I’ve watched that 56 second video. 🙂

“MT, next time you are coming with!” << Oh, I am soooo ready to come with!

I love that Build-A-Bear video, too! I don't even know how many times I've watched it over the years. When surfing Youtube, every time I run across it, I watch it again. (Thanks, Tawna, for posting it.)

  28. marlie7 said

Dayzee – your son is in my prayers. His improvement seems enormous for what he has been through!

MT – that video. The thing that most impressed me was the sound of David’s voice “over” the music. It is so clear there that he doesn’t need voice enhancement, tuning, special effects. He is perfection when he sings. What a joy it must be for a producer to listen to David in the studio and know that the hardest job is already done – the singing. There is no need to dink around with the tone, the key, the modulation. Just record and play. Again, perfection!

  29. Suzy-Q said

Dayzee, I am so relieved to hear that your son is on the mend. God bless you and your family.

  30. MT said

“Just record and play. Again, perfection!” I know what you mean. I totally agree.

Hmmm … Random thought here but, can you imagine being a producer and having to make the choice between one beautiful, perfect vocal and another? It probably makes it both easy and hard for them at the same time. How does one choose?

I’d want to use them all! haha I’d have a 15 minute song. (I think I’d have to include some humming in there, too.)

  31. bebereader said

    Angelica and MT,

If I could “spend the day” as a fly on the wall I’d gladly enter the contest. But hanging out and interacting…heh heh…I don’t really know if I could handle it. Okay I’ll enter the contest but I’ll pull an Anya move and give my winning ticket to someone else.

  32. beloirti said

Somebody ask Kurt how he chose….

Bebe, can I be your friend???

  33. Dayzee said

Standing in line here in case Bebe wins a ticket. Bel, I remember Kurt mentioning that every track David recorded was absolutely perfect. MT, Kurt did not seem to mind that he had too much perfection.

Jan & Tawna, I have always loved watching that Build-a-Bear session. Thanks for bringing that back.

I’m leaving today for a short trip to St. George to see my oldest son. Sorry to miss Nandito tonight. Give Josh a hug for me. 🙂

Can’t thank you all enough for so many good wishes. It truly means a lot to me.

  34. jans11 said

    Safe travels, Dayzee!

    Safe travels, my dear!
You won’t miss a thing tonight.
There will be NO Nandito Ako chat tonight.
We finished watching a complete set last week and will start fresh again next week with Episode 1.

  36. tawna21 said

    Dayzee, please travel safely! ♥♥

Perhaps the tracks that didn’t make it on the BEGIN. cd are in the vault for another release!?! *crossing fingers*

  37. MT said

LOL There seems to be a line forming for your ticket.

    Safe travels, Dayzee.

  38. fenfan said

Lovely post Mt and such a delicious video of David in the studio. I want to be that fly on the wall too. And I know how I can win that ticket if ever there is a contest. All I have to do is write to tell him I don’t know who he is, don’t care about meeting him and have better things to do than to enter a contest to meet him. Of course I will have to watch Nandito Ako again to get the exact words so he would choose me. So, I’ll see you all in NA chat next week!

  39. Angelica said

LOL!! That is priceless! Of course, that is the perfect way to get selected! You get an A+ for that plan. 🙂

  40. MT said

LOL Smart girl! haha Can you put me in your pocket and take me with you when you win? 😀

  41. skydancer1x said

    oh Fen! BWAAAAHAHA!!

  42. djafan said

MT, that sound, that dang sound that comes out of him is pure joy. It calms, it excites, it penetrates the soul. It just wasn’t long enough IMO 🙂

I for one would love to win any contest involving spending any type of time with him. I’d be happy just observing him, but a day long hanging out chit chatting would be a dream, he is so interesting and fenfan has the sure way to win! We could all submit the same entry and he’d have to choose us all lol.

Gladys, never say you can’t because everything is possible. It seemed impossible that you would ever have the opportunity to meet him and you see what happened with that. And your first video is beautiful.

Dayzee, prayers and all the positive energy in the world for your son, you and family going your way.

I’ve been super busy with work and family and haven’t been able to log on and I’m having major withdrawals lol. But I can’t complain haha.

Angelica, in answer to your question “Why ever not?”
    It’s hard to answer that.
I would LOVE to watch a video of him recording. Better yet, I’d love to be there with a group, so as not to be singled out. I think
it’s my age (I know it is) (changes are brutal sometimes)
I would really love for a young beautiful fan, who loves David like I do, to win a “watch David record and maybe inspire him to
sing a beautiful love sing with unseen passion.”
Then maybe the video could go viral and the world would see him like we do.
Gorgeous, vocally geniused, caring, passionate, fun, tender, connecting, etc. This sentence could be never ending. And still I sneaked
in a word that I made up. 🙂

This is so far off topic but, does anyone else watch So You Think You Can Dance? I am a dance lover, big time. I love to dance and to watch dancers and this is one of my favorite shows. This performance was just phenomenal. For those of you who don’t watch, in this video Amy is the contestant and she dances with Travis who was a contestant a few years ago and is also the choreographer for this brilliant piece. He is a magnificent dancer and she is amazing dancing with him. She is gorgeous and dances with such passion, (kind of the way David sings) The grace and fluidity of her movements in her arms, her legs, her feet, is just breathtaking,

I hope you don’t mind me sharing it here.

    Absolutely stunning.

I hope one day another couple will dance to one of David’s songs again like they did with Imagine a few years ago.

I love the show and Amy is my favorite this year. Oh what I’d give to see her do a choreographed dance to David’s “Everybody Hurts”. *sigh* That would be a beautiful one to have them dance to.

Everybody Hurts is my favorite off that album. Actually, one of my all time favorites. I play it a LOT! I guess that’s why the video at the top of the thread got to me so much, to be able to “see” him sing at least part of it was amazing. ♥ If I’m really lucky, he’ll do a live version at my first concert. *crossing fingers*

Thanks for posting the picture. 🙂

You all know I have my “issues” with American Idol, as many of us do, lol but because of it, David sure has had some great experiences and met so many famous people.

He’s met the President, sung with MOTAB, belted it out on stage with REO Speed Wagon, has met and had his photo taken with Lady GaGa, starred in a Mini Series, did commercials, and modeled clothes in Asia, performed at the U.S. Embassy in Chile, has over a million twitter followers, and so much more. (And that’s on top of putting out albums and having his own tours.) And that’s in 10 seconds off the top of my head. I can’t even begin to list all the things he’s gotten to do and famous people he’s met. And he was barely 21 when he left. It’s really quite amazing when you think about it.

And he wrote a book 🙂

    Hey peeps!!

I have had a bit of a challenge coming online. Trouble with some teeth makes it a bit hard to use my eyes and read or type online. (is that why they call them “eye teeth?” *_*) Any way….

As I skim around the edges I still see the same lovely people and wonderful comments… I love you guys!

What happened with the trending party this evening? I worked till late and don’t know how it turned out.

I’m in the mood to watch the UK interview with that talk show guy. You know, the one who brought sheep on his show.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this studio recording. My wish is to occaisionally have bonus tracks of raw recordings included on his CD’s. We get to hear the master create!

For any who missed this recording, I put it in the candy jar.

I have been away, working. I came back Wednesday and came down with a nasty cold. I am not one who gets sick that often, but when I do, ouch!

I’ll be in unplugged tonight, probably talking nonsense 🙂

I was at the dentist a few weeks ago and my lady dentist, Dr. Robin was telling me about how she loves Rick Springfield. My mind did a quick catalog check and found a connection to David, so we had a nice fan girl conversation. I sent her links to the people Magazine article of both artists as teen idols.

Today on Netflix (streaming) I found this:
     photo rickS_zps344550ae.jpg

I like to watch documentaries, and especially any that are music related. This is a wonderful portrait of an artist and his fans. It goes deep into why they continue to show up and support him. I could identify with so much of what the fans had to say. I have heard or read exact words from David’s fans. After watching this video I am fully on board (haha) for David to do a Cruise Concert. Can you imagine 5 nights of David concerts and an acoustic set in the after hours lounge? I won’t give away anything, but beyond talent, I think this proves you can be successful and have a very nice career, if you have a devoted fan base. Radio play is nice but not essential. The love oozes both ways between the singer and his fans. I’ll give it 5 stars and an R rating for a few language bombs.

For the best experience listen with headphones. Oh and you need to have a Netflix subscription.

Thanks for the info on Springfield. I wish I had Netflix, I would love to have watched it. From what you wrote, it sounds like David could easily have a career similar to his. I’d be good with that, as long as David sings and there is somewhere I can go see him live.

As for the cruise, well, I get motion sickness and I hate to take medicine of any kind. But for 5 nights of concerts!!! I would be willing to take Dramamine for 5 straight days. 😀 Sign me up. I’m in!

Abs, I watched that documentary on Rick Springfield a month or so ago. It was on HBO, maybe still is. Really liked it, could SO relate!
Also, wasn’t it hilarious when he surprised those two fans in their hotel? ?
Hotel room: Knock, knock. “Oh, it’s probably Rick Springfield lololol hahahahaha.”
Answers door. OMG OMG IT IS.
    It’s really worth watching.

  73. Abrra said

Oh good maybe more can watch since its on HBO. I could relate to almost all of it. Fans are universal and die hard fans are the best 🙂

  74. jans11 said

    Welcome back, Abrra!

Don’t have Netflix or HBO, so I can’t watch it. 😦

Been out of the loop the last few days. Last night I went to my 55th class reunion and there were a lot of old people there! 🙂

    David Cruise: ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

  75. MT said

Ok, I’ve lost my comment twice. 😦 Going to try one last time. Wish me luck!

    Abrra, Betsy,
Love the surprise visit! I can see David doing that (with security of course haha) There were so many instances in the video that reminded me of this fan base. So many comments were words I’ve heard said about David. You could see that the love and respect flows both ways between Springfield and his fans, just like David and his fans.

It was really interesting. I can easily see David having a career similar to that, too.

I loved that some of these people have been friends for years. Loved that they show them getting ready to go to the concert, kissing their families goodbye,
meeting up with friends. Familiar. 🙂
Oh and the little boy! Omg I forgot about that.
