In the Studio With David Archuleta

THIS!!! This video is all kinds of WIN! That’s pretty much all I could say at first about the amazing studio recording we got as a gift from Kari Sellards. I was left almost speechless after the first viewing. I was having a hard time thinking of what I could possibly say about his brilliance in that video. I can’t tell you how amazed I was watching him in action in the studio. I am in awe, to say the least.

Why do I love it so much? Well, I’ll be “shallow” first and say I love the little glance he gives at the beginning, a quick glance directly at the camera showing us he knows he’s being recorded. And let’s face it, he is beautiful with a set of headphones on. I don’t really know why I love that but I do. Love Love Love. Maybe it’s because in my mind he is a “recording” artist and him with headphones while he’s in studio is what my mind feels is a true depiction of who David is. It’s where I feel he belongs. (And on stage of course)  No matter how gorgeous he is, it’s really all about The Voice and the genius behind it.

David in studio, in this video, shows us just how talented he is. And though I have no technical expertise when it comes to music, even I can recognize what a true professional he is, the amazing control he has over his voice, how brilliant he is with improvisation, and how he “feels” the music and is able to so beautifully express himself through perfectly matched vocals. As someone with no musical talent, I would probably be trying to match the music with my notes and tones. But David knows how to take the music to a new level by contrasting his vocals and adding another melodic layer as well as a depth of emotion to the song that can pierce your soul. *sigh* Beautiful.

I’ve heard (seen?) fans say, “What I wouldn’t give to have David at my house for a day so I could pick his brain, or just talk to him for hours.” Me? NO WAY!  No way could I have David talking to me for a day. I’d be a nervous wreck. I love the guy but the thought of talking to him terrifies me. (But in a good way! haha) I am in awe of him and would probably be struck dumb, so that wouldn’t work for me.

But what I WOULD love is to be in the recording studio with him for a day. Not near him, just standing in the background watching. I would pay big bucks to just watch him being himself, recording, improvising, discussing the technical aspects of what he needs to do. And then watching him do what needs to be done, while at the same time adding what he “feels” into the songs. I’d love to watch his mind at work, watch his genius at work. Add to that the wonderful benefit of getting to hear that voice all day, in person. I can’t imagine it getting any better than that.

Gladys, thank you so much for the Wonderful World video. It is beautiful. I would so like to hear David sing that song. It just seems to Davidish. One of the things he has taught me is to be grateful for the beautiful things in this world. Ever since you told us he sang it in Chile it has been my hope to see him perform it.

Sky, I know it takes at least 100 times to watch a David video before you notice anyone else is on the screen. Good job!!

I had a great visit with my son at the Craig Hospital in Denver. The mother of his roommate told me she never thought she would see him get on his feet when they wheeled him into her son’s room. He was pretty much unresponsive, was being fed through a tube in his tummy and could not stand even with help. After 2 weeks at Craig he is walking with a cane for short periods and eating at the table with us. He seems to be about on the level of an 8 or 10 year old boy with a bad memory and flashes of brilliance. He is bewildered that he is not allowed to go back to work. Hoping he continues to improve. He has a wonderful attitude and tries his best at all therapy sessions he attends. It was extremely difficult to leave him.

After being away from home for a week, I was rewarded with the cutting of 8 links from the paper chain. 🙂 Getting so short I have room for more David pics. Haha

    Gladys,

I really enjoyed your new video! I try to imagine David singing “It’s A Wonderful World” but can’t! I think I have a hard time dis-connecting it from Louis Armstrong. Great choice of pictures and transitions. It’s a simple video but very effective. Bravissimo!

Like you, I’d love to hear David sing “What A Wonderful World.” I’ll bet his voice would sound marvelous on it. And Yay for that chain getting shorter! I remember the photo of it and how very loooong it was. Would love to see a picture of it now.

Gladys, your video was really great. I don’t know the first thing on even trying to do one.

Dayzee, happy to hear that your son is improving..still praying for a full recovery. You have my empathy on having to leave him. Our kids are always our “babies” no matter how old they get. 🙂

MT, I agree with you on being in the studio all day and watching that great voice in action would be so awesome! 🙂 But I am one that would love to spend the day with him, just hanging. Having a small taste of it at my first VIP, I know that he is super fun and I never felt intimidated by him at all. He is just so easy to be around. He is an all around great person, just awesome. And I’m actually a shy, timid person. I think that with him kind of that way too, I felt more at ease. He probably won’t be that way so much when he comes home, with him growing up the last 2 yrs. But you never know, I’m old enough to be his grandma and I’m still shy! 🙂

Gladys! You did it! Just last night in chat you told us you could never make a video, and it was impossible. Now look…your first video is born and uploaded! It’s beautiful and I hope you continue to make more for us and explore this new medium.

    Dayzee,

Your news about your son is so bittersweet. I know you’re happy he’s doing so much better but this is a hard cross to bear. I’m sure it must have been as you said, “…extremely difficult to leave him.” You are always so upbeat but I think you are so strong and in my mind you are a warrior. My prayers are with you and your son and all the staff at Craig Hospital in Denver.

I will get out the spam wand on myself since Abrra is not here to do it. She would have wanted it that way. 🙂

    MT,

I’m with you; David in the studio would be a gift for the fans. I have felt that way for a very long time. Instead of a regular vlog, I was always wishing for a glimpse into one of his recording sessions to see his genius at work, learning the songs, improvising as he went along. We did have a small glimpse with the video for “Everybody Hurts” and then again with the above video but those were just a tease. Something a little longer would be great!

I know we discussed this but how cool would it be if David’s team held a raffle or contest with the prize being “Spend some time with David in the studio”? I bet that would cause quite a riot, in trying to win the contest! LOL

Finally going to comment on your article since last night I was too pooped to do it justice. I would love to spend a day watching and listening to David in the studio. I love the serious way he goes about his work and how focused he is. It’s one thing to see him perform on stage, and it’s a wonderful thing too, but hearing him live in a small room is absolutely thrilling. Hard to explain what it feels like but that voice in that little room in Lafayette, La. at my one and only VIP- he sang Crazy and Heaven. I think it was Heaven. My mind took a vacation but I know there was sound and it was so beautiful I could hardly breathe. All I could do was stare and marvel at what I was hearing coming from one rather diminutive young man with the face of an angelic child. It was Heaven.

    Jan,
You make talking to him sound so easy. I’ve never met him but I’ve heard so much about how some fans just completely lose focus it kind of scares me. Of course I plan to try to meet him anyway. LOL I’ll let you guys know how that goes. 😉

    Sky,
I am ROFL at the visual of you with duct tape and a harness. haha If they ever did the contest Bebe mentioned and you won, we MUST have video! LOLOL

    Bebe,
“Instead of a regular vlog, I was always wishing for a glimpse into one of his recording sessions to see his genius at work …” Yep, a nice long one that lasts more than a minute would be nice!

And if they hold that contest, I’ll be sending my entry in! haha And one for Sky!

    Betsy,
Live CD & DVD??? Oh yea, I’d buy one of those too!

    Bluesky,
{{hugs}} haha Yep, it definitely deserved a post of it’s own. 🙂

    Angelica,
When you said, “I love the serious way he goes about his work and how focused he is.” Maybe that’s it. In studio he’s not “on” and trying to entertain. I love seeing that side of him. It feels like a glimpse into David’s future. IDK if I’m even making sense. LOL I hope you get what I mean.

Angelica, and this : “My mind took a vacation but I know there was sound” hahaha and people wonder why the thought of meeting him scares me?

MT, I am so glad you wrote about this video and gave us a chance to express how much it affected us Just when I thought Kari had run out of goodies and we weren’t going to get anything until David came back. First, the Dougie was so much fun, and then comes this jaw-dropping EH recording snippet. It is a pleasure to be able to see his masterful touch as he records. Like Sky, I couldn’t wait to get that sceamcap up on my desktop. Abrra was so kind to get those up so quickly.

I would love to spend some time in the studio watching David. A lot of time. Angelica mentioned hearing him in a small room is thrilling. It always amazes me how much he gives to even a small group of fans.

The truth is out… David in the studio makes my heart stop dead still!! I would love, love, love to be in one of his ‘work’ sessions (don’t they have take a fan to work day?). I would be so quiet (dead quiet probably). I just can’t even imagine what it would be like to be there. We’ve heard both Richard Parkinson and Kurt Bestor describe their unbelievable experiences while there, and if it’s that amazing for them can you just imagine what it would be like for any of us non-professionals?!

Thank you MT for posting this EH video. It’s one of those that gets to repeat, repeat and then again.

Dayzee, hugs and prayers for you and your precious son. I just can’t even imagine what you are going thru with all of this. It’s so good to hear of his huge improvements. It’s truly mind boggling what can happen when you get the proper treatments and care. I’m so glad you were directed to the Craig Hospital. God bless you both with the strength and courage you need to press forward on this long road to his recovery. You are a strong lady, dear friend.

Where is Abrra? I’ve been so seriously involved in family stuff lately that getting to chat is impossible. I have a tough time even getting here to this most amazing ‘home sweet home for all the good David ramblings and musings’. I really miss it and hope things level out soon.

Dayzee – your son is in my prayers. His improvement seems enormous for what he has been through!

MT – that video. The thing that most impressed me was the sound of David’s voice “over” the music. It is so clear there that he doesn’t need voice enhancement, tuning, special effects. He is perfection when he sings. What a joy it must be for a producer to listen to David in the studio and know that the hardest job is already done – the singing. There is no need to dink around with the tone, the key, the modulation. Just record and play. Again, perfection!

Hmmm … Random thought here but, can you imagine being a producer and having to make the choice between one beautiful, perfect vocal and another? It probably makes it both easy and hard for them at the same time. How does one choose?

I’d want to use them all! haha I’d have a 15 minute song. (I think I’d have to include some humming in there, too.)

Angelica, in answer to your question “Why ever not?”
    It’s hard to answer that.
I would LOVE to watch a video of him recording. Better yet, I’d love to be there with a group, so as not to be singled out. I think
it’s my age (I know it is) (changes are brutal sometimes)
I would really love for a young beautiful fan, who loves David like I do, to win a “watch David record and maybe inspire him to
sing a beautiful love sing with unseen passion.”
Then maybe the video could go viral and the world would see him like we do.
Gorgeous, vocally geniused, caring, passionate, fun, tender, connecting, etc. This sentence could be never ending. And still I sneaked
in a word that I made up. 🙂

This is so far off topic but, does anyone else watch So You Think You Can Dance? I am a dance lover, big time. I love to dance and to watch dancers and this is one of my favorite shows. This performance was just phenomenal. For those of you who don’t watch, in this video Amy is the contestant and she dances with Travis who was a contestant a few years ago and is also the choreographer for this brilliant piece. He is a magnificent dancer and she is amazing dancing with him. She is gorgeous and dances with such passion, (kind of the way David sings) The grace and fluidity of her movements in her arms, her legs, her feet, is just breathtaking,

I hope you don’t mind me sharing it here.

    Absolutely stunning.

I hope one day another couple will dance to one of David’s songs again like they did with Imagine a few years ago.

    Jan,
I love the show and Amy is my favorite this year. Oh what I’d give to see her do a choreographed dance to David’s “Everybody Hurts”. *sigh* That would be a beautiful one to have them dance to.

Everybody Hurts is my favorite off that album. Actually, one of my all time favorites. I play it a LOT! I guess that’s why the video at the top of the thread got to me so much, to be able to “see” him sing at least part of it was amazing. ♥ If I’m really lucky, he’ll do a live version at my first concert. *crossing fingers*

    Bebe,
Thanks for posting the picture. 🙂

You all know I have my “issues” with American Idol, as many of us do, lol but because of it, David sure has had some great experiences and met so many famous people.

He’s met the President, sung with MOTAB, belted it out on stage with REO Speed Wagon, has met and had his photo taken with Lady GaGa, starred in a Mini Series, did commercials, and modeled clothes in Asia, performed at the U.S. Embassy in Chile, has over a million twitter followers, and so much more. (And that’s on top of putting out albums and having his own tours.) And that’s in 10 seconds off the top of my head. I can’t even begin to list all the things he’s gotten to do and famous people he’s met. And he was barely 21 when he left. It’s really quite amazing when you think about it.

    Hey peeps!!

I have had a bit of a challenge coming online. Trouble with some teeth makes it a bit hard to use my eyes and read or type online. (is that why they call them “eye teeth?” *_*) Any way….

As I skim around the edges I still see the same lovely people and wonderful comments… I love you guys!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this studio recording. My wish is to occaisionally have bonus tracks of raw recordings included on his CD’s. We get to hear the master create!

For any who missed this recording, I put it in the candy jar.

I have been away, working. I came back Wednesday and came down with a nasty cold. I am not one who gets sick that often, but when I do, ouch!

I’ll be in unplugged tonight, probably talking nonsense 🙂

I was at the dentist a few weeks ago and my lady dentist, Dr. Robin was telling me about how she loves Rick Springfield. My mind did a quick catalog check and found a connection to David, so we had a nice fan girl conversation. I sent her links to the people Magazine article of both artists as teen idols.

     photo peoplescan3_zpsca99aacf.jpg

Today on Netflix (streaming) I found this:
     photo rickS_zps344550ae.jpg

I like to watch documentaries, and especially any that are music related. This is a wonderful portrait of an artist and his fans. It goes deep into why they continue to show up and support him. I could identify with so much of what the fans had to say. I have heard or read exact words from David’s fans. After watching this video I am fully on board (haha) for David to do a Cruise Concert. Can you imagine 5 nights of David concerts and an acoustic set in the after hours lounge? I won’t give away anything, but beyond talent, I think this proves you can be successful and have a very nice career, if you have a devoted fan base. Radio play is nice but not essential. The love oozes both ways between the singer and his fans. I’ll give it 5 stars and an R rating for a few language bombs.

For the best experience listen with headphones. Oh and you need to have a Netflix subscription.

    Abrra,
Thanks for the info on Springfield. I wish I had Netflix, I would love to have watched it. From what you wrote, it sounds like David could easily have a career similar to his. I’d be good with that, as long as David sings and there is somewhere I can go see him live.

As for the cruise, well, I get motion sickness and I hate to take medicine of any kind. But for 5 nights of concerts!!! I would be willing to take Dramamine for 5 straight days. 😀 Sign me up. I’m in!

Abs, I watched that documentary on Rick Springfield a month or so ago. It was on HBO, maybe still is. Really liked it, could SO relate!
Also, wasn’t it hilarious when he surprised those two fans in their hotel? ?
Hotel room: Knock, knock. “Oh, it’s probably Rick Springfield lololol hahahahaha.”
Answers door. OMG OMG IT IS.
    It’s really worth watching.

    Abrra, Betsy,
Love the surprise visit! I can see David doing that (with security of course haha) There were so many instances in the video that reminded me of this fan base. So many comments were words I’ve heard said about David. You could see that the love and respect flows both ways between Springfield and his fans, just like David and his fans.

It was really interesting. I can easily see David having a career similar to that, too.
