David Archuleta ~ Coming Back Strong

The following is compiled from comments made on Twitter and FOD August 15, 2013 by @McKenzieHarr and used here with permission from the author. I felt the remarks deserved showcasing, if for no other reason than that they deal with a subject much on the minds of his fans right now.  That she does it so effectively is another. ~ Angelica

I know many people think that David could be more successful if his music were more mainstream or more “current.” I totally disagree. The best thing David has going for him right now is that he’s different. The reason he is different is because he can do things with his voice no other young singer can. He has a unique personality that cannot be mimicked like Justin Bieber’s. These things make him unique in an industry which is becoming increasingly homogeneous.

Yes, David’s last Jive CD did not sell as well as his first but we should not assume it’s because the songs were not good. The songs are different but like I said, different is good. Nobody seems to ever point out that WEG, who was managing the superhot Jonas Bros, at the time they managed David failed to get a single prime time talk show appearance for David. Way to use your leverage WEG. Or that the only half decent daytime talk show appearance WEG got was the fading Regis & Kelly and the little watched Wendy Williams. Or that SBL got no noticeable radio push from Jive. Why is David successful in Asia? Because the label actually supports him. So, I’ll say again, David’s music is not to blame. If David tries to mimic he “hottest sound” when he returns rather than remaining true to himself, his career will be doomed.

Some examples of failure despite releasing “current” music? Look at the Jonas Bros. Their first single “Pom Poms” had a very current sound and contained the requisite sexual innuendo to “prove” they had a mature sound. It went nowhere despite a premiere on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show and several prime time TV performances. Why did it fail? Because the song, while current was absolutely generic and sounded horrible when performed live. Thus the Jonas Brothers are reduced to selling concert tickets for $20 on Groupon and performing in half empty venues with no media buzz.

Listen to Jessica Sanchez’s new CD. If you were looking for all the elements of the currently hot sound, you’d find it on Jessica’s CD. If you are looking for currently hot songwriters, they are on Jessica’s CD. How many copies did it sell in its first week? About 14,000. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Me,_You_%26_the_Music This despite NeYo guesting on the CD and a Glee stint. When the CD flopped, Jessica started adopting a sexy look and showing skin, hoping this would garner her some attention like it did for Britney. Despite this, she did not even get a second single. And there are now some pretty embarrassing pictures of Jessica out there now.

There are just so many, many failed pop singers who seek success by trying to mimic what is currently popular – on the flawed assumption that successfully mimicking what is popular will create a “good” song or such a song will itself be popular. Thus my tweet. I’m just so glad David is not like the Cody Simpson, Greyson Chance or many other Justin Bieber clones out there. He’s an original who has the courage to trust himself and his talent. Better yet, he has fans who trust his talent and know that his best chance of success is not by mimicking Justin – Bieber or Timberlake – or Bruno Mars, but in being himself.

My hope is that David will introduce the “David Archuleta” sound when he returns and most importantly he’ll FINALLY secure a management team and label capable and WILLING to promote him for who he is rather than who the market researchers say the public “wants.” If that happens, I’m pretty sure Cody Simpson, Greyson Chance and the Jonas Bros will be trying and failing to be the next David Archuleta.

High video views are a product of popularity but equally important if not more important is strong marketing and promotion. When the Jonas Bros were the Disney favorites, they easily secured millions and millions of views of their videos. Without such support, their most recent video for “First Time” has about 1.6 million views. Again, David has to get the right label and management when he returns. That will be critical. No more WEGs please!!!!

I loved the two Joy Williams co-writes on TOSOD, especially “My Kind of Perfect.” That song was so emotionally raw, honest and open, not to mention beautiful. A perfect song for those in David’s young teen/tween demo. Of course some brilliant market researcher probably told Jive the public would hate it. David has some good songs. He just doesn’t have the team who can help him sell them.

The great thing about MKOP is that if you simply take the lyrics literally, it can be a simple teen love song. However, there is metaphor and imagery in the lyrics that are so deep the song could be studied in a poetry class. That’s another thing I like about David’s songs. They have meaning and in fact multiple meanings if you dig deep enough.

I think David going away could in some way actually help his career. It gives him a great new back story. It creates interest and curiosity in him – witness the buzz from his mission announcement. The two year absence gives him something few artists ever get: a second chance to make a first impression. Don’t forget Alanis disappeared for a few years before making a big comeback with a new sound.

I guess if he had stuck around and worked on his music, his career might be better off but that’s not a certainty. David Cook has been diligently working away at his career since David left. He has gotten nowhere. His latest self released single that was premiered on American Idol flopped hard. As far as I know, there is no formerly successful Idol who has ever made a full comeback after a fall in popularity. So the odds were against David even if he stayed rather than left on a mission.

The mission is a real wildcard that could help David buck the trend. I think it could give David a chance to make a full comeback or go even further. He can’t waste that opportunity. He needs good management and a supportive label.

In the Studio With David Archuleta

THIS!!! This video is all kinds of WIN! That’s pretty much all I could say at first about the amazing studio recording we got as a gift from Kari Sellards. I was left almost speechless after the first viewing. I was having a hard time thinking of what I could possibly say about his brilliance in that video. I can’t tell you how amazed I was watching him in action in the studio. I am in awe, to say the least.

Why do I love it so much? Well, I’ll be “shallow” first and say I love the little glance he gives at the beginning, a quick glance directly at the camera showing us he knows he’s being recorded. And let’s face it, he is beautiful with a set of headphones on. I don’t really know why I love that but I do. Love Love Love. Maybe it’s because in my mind he is a “recording” artist and him with headphones while he’s in studio is what my mind feels is a true depiction of who David is. It’s where I feel he belongs. (And on stage of course)  No matter how gorgeous he is, it’s really all about The Voice and the genius behind it.

David in studio, in this video, shows us just how talented he is. And though I have no technical expertise when it comes to music, even I can recognize what a true professional he is, the amazing control he has over his voice, how brilliant he is with improvisation, and how he “feels” the music and is able to so beautifully express himself through perfectly matched vocals. As someone with no musical talent, I would probably be trying to match the music with my notes and tones. But David knows how to take the music to a new level by contrasting his vocals and adding another melodic layer as well as a depth of emotion to the song that can pierce your soul. *sigh* Beautiful.

I’ve heard (seen?) fans say, “What I wouldn’t give to have David at my house for a day so I could pick his brain, or just talk to him for hours.” Me? NO WAY!  No way could I have David talking to me for a day. I’d be a nervous wreck. I love the guy but the thought of talking to him terrifies me. (But in a good way! haha) I am in awe of him and would probably be struck dumb, so that wouldn’t work for me.

But what I WOULD love is to be in the recording studio with him for a day. Not near him, just standing in the background watching. I would pay big bucks to just watch him being himself, recording, improvising, discussing the technical aspects of what he needs to do. And then watching him do what needs to be done, while at the same time adding what he “feels” into the songs. I’d love to watch his mind at work, watch his genius at work. Add to that the wonderful benefit of getting to hear that voice all day, in person. I can’t imagine it getting any better than that.

Nandito Ako taping

For many of us here at The Voice, Tuesdays have become synonymous with Nandito Ako. I love watching and rewatching this story unfold every week. It’s like sitting in someone’s living room with a group of friends, eating popcorn @@@@@@@@ and watching a favorite soap opera. Btw, @@@@@@ is code in Nandito Ako chat for popcorn which Bebe passes out to everyone, sometimes caramel, sometimes cheese. 🙂 Rewatching the mini series has afforded us the chance to really appreciate the uniqueness of each character, and the actors who played them. An Uncle Stevil’s “hats off” to all of them, and to our Hero, David Archuleta, who put Everything and More, into his first starring role, as “Josh Bradley, International Star.”

The faces of the cast of characters have been etched in our minds…Holly, desperate for her mother’s love yet she can never please her. Anya, who rejected Josh at first because she wanted to be a good friend to Holly. Uncle Stevil, who tried to control Josh and made him believe that his Mom died in the fire. Margaret, Holly’s wicked mother. Teresa, Anya’s devoted mother who would do anything for her children. Yaya, a better mother to Holly than Margaret ever was. Josh’s mother, Cara, who he thought was dead but is still alive. And Volta, dear friend to Anya’s family. Billy, Josh’s best friend. Chit, Josh’s manager. Alladin, Anya’s little half brother who is probably the wisest character in the show. Mando, Anya’s friend from childhood.

So stay with me here…keeping this all in mind…..

I absolutely love watching any and all videos of David in the Philippines. I got sucked into the vortex the other day, and ended up clicking on a video, that led to another video (you all know how that goes) of when David was on a TV show called SIS, in The Phillippines in 2009. He performed and was interviewed by three women who were all in spazz mode and although all three were speaking fast, I distinctly heard a voice that was very familiar. I kept watching and listening to the three women until it suddenly hit me! Well I’ll be darned if that isn’t…?!! Wait, is it? HA! Yes! Yes it is! After watching countless reruns of Nandito Ako, I’d recognize that voice anywhere!

Soo, for all you diehard Nandito Ako fans out there, watch this video and see if you recognize any of the voices. One in particular.

Who knew that two years later they would meet again for Nandito Ako?

Even the Sky Will Tell You….

AzfNB2ZCcAA0jln2243

As David was preparing to leave for his mission, I was seeking ways to keep his presence close by. I knew I would have his music to listen to, but I was wanting something more tangible, physical, something symbolic even. I thought back to previous things I had read and written and decided that I would get 2 plants to tend to, one for each year. I don’t have a green thumb so I decided to get succulents, which are somewhat easier to care for if you do it properly. I researched them and found a spot for them, and cared for them as directed. The plants did not make me feel better as I thought they would untl something strange happened 1 year later, almost to the day of David’s departure.

Plant #1 died suddenly. It was healthy all year-long. I smiled when I looked at it, and wondered how, why, and if, and then maybe, just maybe I really wasn’t surprised at all. This wasn’t the first time that some higher power seemed to be at work surrounding David. What with the archuglow, the spiritual feelings people have described at concerts, angel references, etc, most of us know we are in this fandom for reasons beyond the music. Some even feel as though they were chosen somehow, so much so that they think only certain people can truly hear what we hear in his voice, while others say he’s a great singer and go on with their day.

Plant11

Plant22But the question remains, why did the plant die that week? Why not the week before or after? Did I subconsciously not care for the plant knowing that year one was ending? Did the plant know it had fulfilled its purpose? Or is this simply a coincidence? I knew what I thought, but some research was in order. After reading much too much about Quantum Physics, the time-space continuum, and math, I stumbled upon Synchronicity.

“Synchronicity is the experience of two or more events as meaningfully related, whereas they are unlikely to be causally related. The subject sees it as a meaningful coincidence, although the events needn’t be exactly simultaneous in time. The concept of synchronicity was first described by Carl Gustav Jung, a Swiss psychologist, in the 1920s.[1]

The concept does not question, or compete with, the notion of causality. Instead, it maintains that just as events may be connected by a causal line, they may also be connected by meaning. A grouping of events by meaning need not have an explanation in terms of cause and effect.

Behind all these phenomena Jung places the archetype or the constellation of an archetype, which, in his view, is a process that engages equally objective manifestations, in the physical world, and subjective ones, in the psychological universe.”

Pretty simple. I think the two things are related so therefore, they are. But the nagging question remains – why that week? Then I had to think about plants more. Maybe there was more to this than I knew. Maybe it was just that plant’s life cycle. But Plant #2 was thriving, both succulents of the same type. I found some fascinating information about plants. I invite you to take the time to read this article (you got nothing else better to do right?!) and think about it for a while.

Since we know a little more about plants now, have our questions changed about plant #1’s death? Or maybe there is a whole new set of questions? Needless to say I am watching plant #2 a bit more than I was. What does it know? Will it die when David comes home? Have your thoughts changed about Plant #1? Mine have not. I know that the plant was cared for properly, and I don’t believe that I subconsciously neglected it somehow. Did it know I needed to smile? It’s like the time I was at the thrift store a few months after David left. Thrifting had become my new hobby. Marciami was there with me that day. I was looking through some handbags and reached inside of one and felt something. I pulled it out to find it was a stone with words on it.

david stone 1

It said ” No problem is too big for God to handle” so then I flipped it over and it said,

david stone 2

“The David Stone.” Marciami and I screamed right in the middle of the thrift store! We jumped around like tween girls for a minute. What are the odds that I would reach into that handbag at that store at that moment? What did it mean? I have carried that stone with me every day since. My husband says I stole it from the thrift store because I did not buy the handbag it was in. I choose to think of it as a gift. I had to research it since I had never seen a stone like that before. I found it online: http://www.amazon.com/Club-Faithstones-David-Stone-Boxes/dp/B002MPRRWU

Was it a coincidence that two archangels found a David stone while trying out a new hobby to keep our minds off of David?

What do you think? Have you experienced other examples of Synchronicity during your fandom? What did it mean to you? Did you tell anyone about it? And do you think I killed plant #1? LOL
