Cheating on David Archuleta

I have a confession. I have strayed, cheated on the man who has held me in thrall for the past five years. I do it every evening, furtively, making eyes at this guy in vest and shirt, singing and dancing and making my heart go kaboom.

Dear Reader, are you confused by my rambling? Are you going “huh”?

You might have guessed that, this being The Voice, I must be talking about David Archuleta. Big sigh! Yes, him! So, he is the enthralling one.  Then who’s the other guy?

I give you Exhibit A.

I just can’t stop watching. I didn’t quite understand why. Not at first anyway. I had never been a fan. His voice does not compare; no, no, not by a long mile. The dancing? Yes, that might be it. But Mr Archuleta can boogie too. We’ve all seen glimpses of that.

Then one night, after several repeats deep into the early hours – bingo!

Mr T doesn’t wear a tie. His vest is less snug, the trousers a looser fit. But let your imagination run just a bit.  Then squint a little.

Can you see it now? Shirt with rolled up sleeves, perfectly knotted tie, body-hugging vest, almost sprayed-on pants. And boots! There they are, with pants tucked in.

Like this.

You understand now, don’t you? I might be watching JT sing and dance but all I see is David Archuleta. The only voice I want to hear. The only guy I want to see – making a big splash everywhere. In 2014.

Until then, I am going to cheat a little by watching JT and transforming him into that one and only guy for me. The brain is a powerful thing, don’t you think?

    Fen,
Love this! I was actually watching that video and thinking of David, comparing performance styles, wondering how David would sound singing that song and performing like that with a full band and back up singers. And then I read the rest. LOL How funny that you started watching that video, so fascinated, and then realized it reminded you of David.

David, see what you are driving us to? (How many days left?)

Fen, what a cute post! 🙂 Everyone I see and hear, I always compare them to David. Just can’t help it! But, with David, there is no comparison, he outdoes them all! ♥ Yep, he does!

I have to confess I never heard this song in full and worse never watch the vid before your post !! I’m living under a rock lol !! But yeah now I understand what you’re talking about !! like MTand Jans, almost everything I come across reminds me of D!! I always wondering how would D sound on those songs, how would he move, whip his head, roll his soulders, flirt with his eyebrow !! haha ok I stop !! I’m so bias noone compare to our guy !! 10 months until he’s back then we’ll know how he’s gonna treat us !! we have to get ourseleves prepare for the “things” to come in 2014 !! mentally/physically lol

Oh thanks Fen I enjoy the article very much ❤

Fenfan – I had to laugh at your cute post. While watching the video, I could see your point, but I COULD NOT listen to the song. Timberlake’s voice is like a 12-year-old boy and just doesn’t…you know….compare! LOL. But thanks for the little treat. I do like the stage moves of Timberlake.

Uh huh…sure, DA. “When they pass around the chocolate….” (*_*)

Well, that little phrase there (with accompanying emphasis) is enough to put the chocolate makers out of business.
JT could use a little of that there “chocolate”.

Fenfan… such a fun article!! It is easy for us to remember that there simply is no replacement for David Archuleta.

And: JT moves his head to the side for emphasis. DA began doing it (as I understand) to help to relax or encourage the vocal chord. What began as a necessity and to help him breathe has become an excuse for us to stop breathing.

Somehow, JT’s move just does not pack the same punch. Sorry, JT. Sometimes weaknesses become strengths and then… watch out.

Fenfan what a fun article. Yep!, for sure, there is no one who compares to David Archuleta! It will be sooo interesting to see who he brings back to the stage in 2014!

I really like David’s newer way of dressing, since his ‘Bench make-over’, but I could really get into him dressing in somewhat of the style that JT has on in the video – not the hair though, nope, nope, nope on that, I love the post Bench hair.

    Back to waiting…. haven’t found a replacement…. really don’t want to.

Cheating on David Archuleta!!! Well, ain’t that a shame. I would NEVER do such a thing/*couph*Acha*couph* 😉 Seriously, Fen, I love the image of David looking so cool and confident with some sophisticated new moves at the mic stand. He has it in him, we’ve already seen many glimpses of his natural charisma onstage. As BeeBee from Planet Hunkerdown once described it, he has the Thing and the Thang and he knows how to use both!

Also love your two example vids of David and JT. Here is my fave performance by David from that tour, showing off some pretty deadly grooving

And another performance from JT on SNL I actually like even better than Mirror that has more dancing. Squint eyes, as Fen instructs and insert David of course.

Coincidentally, two weeks after I received this article from Fenfan, HG of SoulDavid posted a great write up involving David and JT. You can see it here. http://souldavid.wordpress.com/2013/05/01/come-back-comeback-soul/

Maybe I been living under a rock, but with all this comparing/contrasting of the two recently, I just noticed something. I must have viewed it a couple of hundred times and it never registered. Kari has just 2 clients: David and Justin Timberlake. What?!! I think my head just exploded! :-O Considering how well JT’s career is going right now, AND the fact that I’d love to see David carve out a cool, well-groomed class act for himself when he returns, I’m really good with this.

I’m so used to David’s BIG voice, that I sometimes wonder how on earth some of the singing stars even make it. And then some don’t even want to give David the time of day! Urrg!

Fenfan, that was so much fun, thank you! I was watching the JT video and really enjoying it … but then watched the David video and .. just nobody compares to him for me!!! He has really spoiled me for anyone else. I can enjoy other singers but there is just not that connection that I feel with David. My husband can’t understand how I can listen almost exclusively to David and makes snide comments about my lack of variety but HE JUST DOESN’T UNDERSTAND!!!! amen!
It’s always interesting to see what other artists are doing nowadays.Frankly.I can’t quite figure out where JT is going with the big band”look” when his genre of music is kind of..the same.) And the backup singers, kind of overpower him.
Davids voice is so strong and full and powerful, he can be heard over screaming fans, and the MOTAB choir and orchestra as ‘backup singers” well, you know what I’m sayin’♥ I enjoyed seeing the two videos, one after the other, and the one from SNL.
JT is a good dancer, but David…. Davids got those natural moves..(gahhh!) and the built in charm and charisma that can’t be beat.♥

JT vs DA – yes – no contest! We know who will always come up on top.
It really makes me happy to see that I am not the only one who sees David everywhere I look.

#3 Betty(Bit) – Angelica worked her magic while we were having fun and passing soap around in Chat. See you again there soon.

#12 Angelica I’ve been watching that Suit and Tie video too. But I prefer the dancing in Mirrors. Somehow I think it’s more David. And the Kari connection – now that you mention it – yes she does seem to have only two clients. And I just saw she is going on a world tour with JT!

The mind is a powerful thing, I see David everywhere and relate everything to him, always lol I saw JT perform Mirrors on the Fallon show and just kept thinking, why is he so popular??? David runs circles around him, IMO. But I do have to admit that the role out of this album after not having one for so many years, 7 I believe has been brilliant. Promo, promo, promo, and not any kind of promo creative out of the box promo. I would love to see the same type of creative promo for David for his re introduction to the world, aside from us uber fans.

The Kari and JT connection has been on going for some time now lol Can’t believe you guys didn’t know or maybe I spend to much time on twitter lol.

Angelica, those were some interesting tweets you picked up. Don’t know if you remember that Mietra is David’s good friend and Kari knows her, hmmm.

Kari also gave Bowersox some JT tickets and Gina was there too.

Fen, loved this article! I too have a penchant for the SNL JT Mirror performance. In fact, I was watching it about once a day on my DVR until he was on Ellen. In the Ellen version, the back up singers came up front and center with him and really rocked out the last chorus. For me the live version is 10,000 times better and more interesting than the recorded version. And yes, I totally agree that JT’s voice doesn’t even come close to David’s. JT is cute, has good stage presence and a nice little keyster but he doesn’t compare to Mr. Archuleta.

As I told you privately last week, I had a similar idea in mind about the JT/DA connection. I guess my thought is usable for a comment here, now.

I find myself inserting David in to music related news when I come across it. When I hear about Justin Timberlake coming back to make music after taking a break for acting, it does my heart good. His fans have not left him and he has added more fans because of his acting. Justin Timberlake’s brand is bigger than ever, as well as his popularity. David did the same thing, only in a slightly different order. He built up his career in singing and acting and then went away on his mission. David will reconnect when he is back.

You gave us a fun article by adding in the videos for the visual impact of “swagga” they both possess. 😉

Fen, I agree the Mirror moves are much more up David’s alley. And of course, JT, nor anyone else has a voice like David. One thing JT does have is tremendous confidence in what he does and who he is. I would love to see David become more comfortable in his own skin off stage, which is going to be vital for his career to move forward. Here is JT doing the “History of Rap” with Jimmy Fallon. I’m hoping David will be invited on his show when he gets back.

And here is JT on Jimmy Fallon very recently, promoting his new CD. It has been I think, 7 years since he put out an album but I would bet it does win some Grammys. That’s another thing I would like David to do when he returns…take his time, work with a good team and great production and don’t rush to get something out there. Except the Spanish album which could be done quickly and give him some revenue to work with from sales and tour.

Totally agree with you Angelica. David is great just the way he is, but confidence on (I think he does have it on stage, but sometimes still holds back) and off stage. I am thinking that the experience he is having in Chile might bring out that confident man that we all know is there. I’m so excited to see the kind of man David will bring back from Chile. I’m thinking this mission was so important to him that in a way it really held him back, so now that it’s been completed , he will be ready to take his career to the very top. Nothing holding you back baby, the sky the limit!!!

Cq, I totally agree with you, that the mission hanging over his head was holding him back and he even made comments early on that, he WAS doing his mission with his music. How long was that burden to be endured? What decisions did it affect and would continue to affect? Men in the LDS Church don’t spend their whole lives serving a mission. They serve 2 years and then get straight to work on their secular ambitions and goals for the rest of their lives. Hopefully he is growing and learning a lot about himself and his ability to hold his own in any situation. When he accomplishes his mission he will be unencumbered and free to fly. Then like you say, “Nothing holding you back baby, the sky’s the limit!!!”

I doubt he has lost any of his legendary morphing skills.

#16 Jan11–(now that I write that it doesn’t look sp right) Looks like a good snow day instead of your name (no disrespect intended). Back to David’s voice vs JT. No comparison in my mind. 1st word that comes to my mind is “depth”. It’s hard to describe. You “have to be there”….1st ever for me was when he spoke (and sang) at a Women’s Conference in SLCity with our Senator Hatch a few years back. I was astounded at the power that came out of that little person. He almost could get away from using a microphone!

That leads to a constant worry I can’t shed (Just call me worry wart–soon I’ll have as many handles as Gladys). When he went on one of his longish tours, there came a point where he had to protect his voice a bit between shows. He puts everything he has into every song whether first or last. I kept a prayer in my heart that his vocal chord would stand up under the pressure…He never complains. He’s having too much fun. I only heard him once mention how sore his throat would get on tour. He’d sound so hoarse that I’d think he could only get a croak out, but no, that voice was still there. A gift for sure.

#3 Fenfan I enjoyed learning about chat the other night. I learned more tonight. I tried to find the Nandito Ako chat room. I searched all over for the gang…to no avail. Kept turning on the chat for Unplugged to see if they’d show up there. Finally (after it was over), Gladys happened in and shared the link so I’ll be set next time. Very next site I pulled up? One that had the directions of where to go! What is it with me and computors? I panic and it freezes!…..but I’m getting my toes wet!….Sorry I’m going on and on. For all I know this isn’t the right place for it so,
Hello! Goodbye! Til next time. B

Yes Angelica I have seen those Jimmy Fallon videos. They are really quite funny. I can see David doing something like that. After all, didn’t he do such a good job with that “What’s in the box?” video?

#37 Abrra I am totally with you there – inserting David in to music related news.

Lately I’ve been seeing him in that Pink and Nate Ruess duet “Just Give Me A Reason”. When Nate comes bouncing out stage front to sing his part, I see David slinking forward like he does in that Mr Confidence video and then I think DA can surely sing that better!

    Worst song choice: Team Shakira

Don’t sing John Lennon’s Imagine in a singing competition. Just don’t do it. Unless you completely rearrange it, or you’re Idol’s David Archuleta.

Thanks for your article. I watched all the videos and read all the comments and I just have to say–I don’t like Justin Timberlake’s performing style! Despite JT’s talent and the obvious hard work he’s put into his act, I still have to say it. Maybe it’s because I wouldn’t be listening to music if it weren’t for David, and therefore haven’t developed an appreciation for a wide variety of performers. Or maybe it’s because JT is older, flashier, more care-worn, and less I don’t know—wholesome? light-exuding? innocently charismatic?–than David. JT’s dancing style seems really jerky to me (it makes me nervous!); his voice is okay, but not exceptional; his overall persona is sorta oily; and he radiates no light. To me, he gives the appearance of being a past-his-prime Vegas singer who tries too hard.

JT is a performer. David performs from his soul. Just my two cents.

    Rona, Dja,

As much as I, like you both, have loved David for all the reasons you listed and many more, he will not remain the innocent 18, 19, or 20 year old we have known. He will continue to grow personally as the years go by, just as he will grow professionally. His experiences as he ages cannot help but affect him as a person and as an artist.

As much as I have loved who and what David was, I am excited for all that he will become. Whatever changes are in store, you can be assured that he will not morph into someone far out of character with who he has always been. He will just be “more David.” A new and even better David. (Because I know he won’t be a worse David, it follows he will be better than ever.)

I can’t wait to see what’s in store.

I like you lots too MT,

I hear what you are saying but maybe our interpretation differs some? This is what I interpreted.

wholesome – not perverted or vulgar

    light exuding – he glows

innocently charismatic – natural charm, no pretenses, doesn’t fake it

I think he will keep these qualities as he matures, gains life experience and becomes a grown man. I don’t think he’ll ever have to try to be charismatic. Actually I don’t see him as an innocent, never have. He said that part of his mission would help him grow in ways he hadn’t been able to and I can’t wait to see and hear who he brings back in 2014 🙂

Ahhhh .. Thanks for explaining your interpretation. I guess I did read them more literally thinking more of “wholesome and innocent” so I see what you mean. It might because I had just read a comment elsewhere saying they don’t want David to change and I was already thinking “but he will change, he has to” and kind of brought that train of thought here.

One thing we all agreed on is that we have loved who he was and already know we’ll love who he becomes. 🙂

Aha! Truth is, shyness is just his “cover”. His alter-ego. His, “Clark”, as it were. Born with the ability to R.U.N. I have felt a little bad for my ¬critique of JT. Perhaps it sounds somewhat mean-spirited, but I hope not. Maybe I could have done without the “oily” and “Vegas singer” parts. However, I still don’t like his style.

Djafan: Your interpretation is correct. I was trying to state the contrast I see between JT and David, or maybe more accurately, I was trying to state what David is by defining what JT isn’t. Thanks for articulating what I didn’t.

MT: You are so right about David not staying young. That’s the only David I know, and I want him to stay that way. But he will grow and mature and have life experiences, both good and bad. It’s inevitable. However, I believe he will make the best of those experiences. I agree with both you and Djafan that David will return as a more refined version of himself, and I share your excitement to see that man and what he becomes. You’re right, what he becomes can only be good

One way for David to show the world he’s back and heading toward superstar power is for him to have a guest star on such a BIG tv show, like DWTS when he returns. Don’t know if that’s even possible because most that guest star are biggies already, or, have a big, hit song…still hoping.

I get you. While JT is no where near as amazingly talented in terms of singing (and charisma), his ability to be relaxed and confident, to let go and have fun both on stage and off is a huge plus for him.

While I’d love to think that David’s shyness doesn’t have an impact, I don’t think that’s the case. When he actually lets go of the nerves in interviews and appearances, I think it will take his career up another notch, for sure.

Oh, and I really hope he lets go of his inhibitions when dancing. He often puts his head down and seems embarrassed when he dances. He should realize by now that every move he makes is loved by his fans. So bring on the moves, David! 🙂

PS We’ve seen enough of David to know he’s got a great natural rhythm. We’ve seen how smooth he moves in the Rainbow MV. and seen glimpses of his dancing (short bursts) on stage. Remember the Douggie? And the shoulder moves and little slide back thing he did when singing Riu Riu Chiu? He did some nice ones in Feliz Navidad, too. He’s holding out on us. He’s got the moves. He just needs to let go and show us ALL he’s got! Don’t know if I’d survive, but I’d like to give it a shot!

Just a little glimps: see video below. And while you’re enjoying the dancing check out the eyebrows at 2:56. haha, Also check out the walking dip at 3:42. LOVE that!

  71. 70. cute video MT, love that one. boy oh boy, don’t think there is anyone of us who doesn’t want to see David ‘cut loose” when it comes to dancin’ The man has perfect rythmn.eek!
It’s easy to forget too, that JT IS
    31 years old,
    was a Disney Mouseketeer,
and has a lot of ‘choreographed’ moves from his “In Sync” days.
I think those things have gotten him much further along in his ‘singing’/acting career, than his voice aloneever could have. He has some good moves….but David, ahhhh David barely has to move but a shoulder, or his hips,or his head,or his legs, and you can feel the natural rythmn and dance potential (beast! ah oooooh!! )that lies within. Some part of him is always moving, when he sing and he feels every single beat. Oh and lets not forget how he did that subtle Michael J move in TOSOD.The Christmas tour, we saw him break out of that no dancing, in a big way.It was a giant step.Just wait till he really lets loose. lkjgl;ksajfskjkj;kjfks;f!
Now with that in mind if you’ll excuse me, I have to go lay down a minute. o->—-<

Regarding Justin Timberlake, I just remembered that I saw him in concert back when he was the front man for pop boyband NSYNC. They were my daughter’s favorite band in 2002 and we took her and a few of her friends to see them in concert at Madison Square Garden in NYC for her 11th birthday. Justin Timberlake was the youngest one in the group and the fans’ favorite.

But individually, he didn’t stand out to me. None of them did. Maybe you had to be eleven years old to appreciate them. They put on a great show; I liked their songs a lot and their voices blended well together. They were funny onstage with a lot of stage presence. They were young kids and learned how to handle themselves; every single dance move was choreographed. It was obvious that they had a lot of training. Maybe more training than real talent.

Born in 1981, JT was, at that time, about the age David is now. I don’t remember thinking that he had any depth or charisma. The audience was comprised of kids with accompanying parents. As young as David appears at times, he seems more mature to me than JT did back then.

This video may be from the concert we went to. The beginning is actually very comical. You won’t see JT on stage closeup until about 4:46.

Fast forward eleven years later and JT is now a married man, in his early thirties with business, stage and acting experience. He has been performing since he was nine years old in The New Mickey Mouse Club, then Star Search (which he didn’t win, by the way) and then joining NSYNC when he was 14. I don’t know how much is natural, but the confidence you see in him comes from almost twenty years of performance experience. It’s not surprising that the backup singers overpower him; he got his training singing in a group.

David is learning everything on his own and has both talent, charisma and natural dancing moves. Imagine what he will be like in ten years!!!

“but he will change, he has to” There is no getting around this, it’s part of life. I see those comments where they don’t want him to change, I don’t understand that line of thinking. All I see is the huge successful life ahead of him in anything he does, he is that good.

    Bluesky,
“Aha! Truth is, shyness is just his “cover”. His alter-ego. His, “Clark”, as it were. Born with the ability to R.U.N. You are so good ♥

    Angelica,
“I doubt he has lost any of his legendary morphing skills.” Morphing skilllllllls! He’s probably doubled them by now.

    Ronaleem, 🙂

Jans, “Like I’ve said time and again, David has me spoiled. To me there will never ever be anyone as good as he is!!” I’m able to enjoy and be entertained by others but it ends there 🙂

    Cq,
“One way for David to show the world he’s back and heading toward superstar power is for him to have a guest star on such a BIG tv show, like DWTS when he returns.” I’m hopeful in this area because I think there will be lots of peeps curious to see David after being away for two years.

    MT,
“He should realize by now that every move he makes is loved by his fans.” David said once that he is self conscious but during the MKOCT I could see him letting go more and more. His cousin Vanessa said that David is holding out, that he’s a good dancer and I’ve seen glimpses of that since the beginning.

    Sky,
“but David, ahhhh David barely has to move but a shoulder, or his hips,or his head,or his legs, and you can feel the natural rythmn and dance potential (beast! ah oooooh!! )that lies within.” Yep!!!

    Bebe,
“David is learning everything on his own and has both talent, charisma and natural dancing moves. Imagine what he will be like in ten years!!!” I knew JT was older didn’t realize in his 30’s now, huge difference. I can only imagine and this video is one of my favorites for imagining 🙂

You are so right! JT has major skills at dancing, etc. DA, I do not think, has that kind of dancing skill. Before you clobber me….
I just mean that every time I have seen him have to do “choreographed” moves, he is awkward. His mom tried, etc. JT looks like a dancer who sings. I work with people & movement for a living. DA is not really comfortable with choreographed moves.

But… let him feel the music… and he will, I believe, explode with his own moves. Give him just a few parameters, guidelines, and let him take it from there. It is like how he improvises with music: let him improvise with movement as well.

I have no doubt he will amaze, as he always does. And the “movements” that he just cannot hold within? Those are the ones I want to see.

    bebe 72- right on!!

It isn’t so much “change” I am expecting, but growth – the growth that comes with getting older and from experiencing life. I too am waiting for the day when his off stage confidence catches up with his on stage confidence. When it does, Katy bar the door!

It is weird to look at how talented he is and still feel that there is so much more untapped in there!!
He has more vocal talent in the little finger of his huge hands than chart topping singers and more performance skills (rhythm and moves) in the little toe of his huge feet than performers 10-15 years older than him. Not to mention the Johnny Depp that lurks within.

bluesky “But… let him feel the music… and he will, I believe, explode with his own moves. Give him just a few parameters, guidelines, and let him take it from there. It is like how he improvises with music: let him improvise with movement as well.”……perfect!
“And the “movements” that he just cannot hold within? Those are the ones I want to see.”……… ye-e-e-e-ssss!

Since we’re talking cheating here, can I confess? Last night I got caught in several vortexes, those of artists other than David. For shame, for shame. 🙂 I had some time and decided to find out what the artists I liked pre-David, the ones I have been ignoring, have been doing for the last five to six years. I started off with a full Bon Jovi concert that I hadn’t seen, then to Enrique Iglesias and finally, Rod Stewart. It’s been a while since I listened to these artists who I was once a fan of.

Was I in for a rude awakening! When I came back here to The Voice of David singing “Everybody Hurts” I nearly fell off my rocker and got hit by a bolt of lightning! I was almost in shock! As good as those other artists are, and some have been in the business for a very long time, none of them sounds as good as David. The sound of his voice affects me like no other artist ever has. It’s heavenly, rich, full, strong, always on key and a perfect fit. I was like ‘whatttttt????”

I may stray but I’ll always come back home.
