Sounds of David Luncheon and Fan Mixer
On Saturday April 6, 2013 a group of devoted fans got together in honor of David Archuleta and his music with the goal of benefiting Child Fund International and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, two children’s’ charities that David supports.
Pamela Pike did a terrific job arranging this event which I had the pleasure of attending! We had a delicious buffet lunch consisting of grilled chicken and steak, together with greens and wonderful desserts.
I had a great time with Winnie, she’s lovely. It was also great fun meeting up with known fans and meeting new ones. I hope we can continue to have fan get-togethers.
Here are the highlights:
Mariners Elementary School Choir of Newport Beach sang for us. It was a great surprise to hear them sing Nandito Ako, they were so cute.
Newport Platinum Dance Academy danced to Zero Gravity and My Kind of Perfect, some more cuteness.
Singer/Songwriter, Sunny Hilden emceed the event. She has so much energy and spunk. Sunny handled the auction duties had us in stitches. While auctioning off a large David poster she encouraged us by saying it could serve as a wrinkle remover lol. I can see why she is David’s friend. It was a privilege to have some words with her. She is a genuine person. She loves and admires David. Sunny spoke of David throughout the event, sharing how she met him at the AI finale when Randy Jackson told a bunch of kids wanting to sing for him to go sing to Sunny, she’s a singer and songwriter, so they all went to her and sang. David waited to the end. She knew then he had something special and kept in touch with him. Sunny also shared with us a story about The My Kind Of Christmas poem David read to the kids on the Christmas tour. They are actually part of the lyrics of a song by the same name she had never completed. It has since been completed and Sunny read it to us. She shared that the melodies in this song are beautiful. She’s hoping and praying that David record’s it when he returns (I added to my list of prayers).
I was so excited to meet Michael Orland, Musical Director of American Idol. He and I have some tweet history and I’ll never forget him saying “David came to us a genius and left a genius”.
Dorian Holley, AI vocal coach, spoke so highly of David and his time on American Idol. Noting how David in his quiet way stood his ground on things going on behind the scenes. Dorian mentioned how everyone liked David and that his work ethic was something else.
Special video appearances by:
Rosanne Simunovic better known as Masterclass Lady who is a voice instructor also spoke highly of David and has a huge admiration for not only his voice but person. She told the story of meeting David during AI tour in Canada. That upon meeting and introducing herself to David he quickly asked her for help in regards to his singing, always trying to improve.
Dean Kaelin David’s voice instructor sent a video in which he spoke about his singing and the decision of going on a mission. Dean got teary at one point talking about David’s decision.
I understand this will be on the DVD of the day. I hope it has Kari’s parting words at the end, had us in tears.
I was able to speak to Kari for a bit and meet Jon “The Broken Man” I named him. I introduced Winnie to her as a new fan. Kari asked Winnie how she became a fan and Winnie told her because of Nandito Ako. Kari’s face lit up and said “Wasn’t he good?” lol We said, “YES! Still hoping for that DVD!”
Kari thanked us for our support of David through tears. Told us she and David are so appreciative of all we do for him and that David WILL START WHERE HE LEFT OFF UPON HIS RETURN AND THAT THINGS WILL BE BIGGER AND BETTER!
I have chills every time I repeat this. So let the countdown continue.

Great recap dja! It slays me that these notable professionals took time out of their extremely busy schedules to attend a DA fan get-together – and during a period when he isn’t even performing or in the country!
It speaks volumes about David and the person and the talent that he is.

Thanks for the story! I enjoyed the video of Sunny Hilden, but I with it would have kept going. I would have loved to hear her reaction upon hearing David for the first time.
It sounds like you all had a great day. I with I could have been there with you all and met all of you and to hear all the wonderful David comments. IDK why, but I love to listen to comments from people in the know who really “get” David. 🙂

DJA, thanks for being our “eyes and ears” to relate your fun time at the fan get together to us! A fun time that I wish I could have went but it just wasn’t feasible right now. All the speakers there and David’s fans are such special people! I agree, Linda, that it sure is fun being an Archie! 🙂 Living in the midwest, I hope maybe there will be some kind of meeting closer. It wouldn’t be of the same caliber, probably, but any David meeting is a great meeting! 🙂
MT, I feel the same way as to loving to read comments from people that “get” David! That’s what is so great about this fan site. No one being judgemental, everyone just loving the same common denominator, DAVID!!!!!!! ♥
I love the top picture of David at the skating program. (forgot the name of it) It’s kind of Elvissy….so sharp looking! Only cuter! haha
Would have loved to hear the rest of Sunny’s story, she sounds like a real fun person to be around.

When we are told things, simple things, like how David would stand his ground on things during AI, it makes me even more proud of him. He is just such a stalwart young man. Such an example of good. It certainly makes me stop and look at my inner soul!

I was never a fan of the album version of Elevator but love the live performances. One of my favorite versions of Elevator was at Z100. He lets loose and just absolutely tears it up at the end. So so so good! So naturally David. He instinctively knows where to take a song to make it great.

IDKE lol. I was watching Dean Kaelin videos of him talking about David, it helps with the missing him. That is my favorite Elevator performance. Dumb radio station never played it.

I love when others witness and recognize this David’s resolve, some have called it a stubborn streak. He certainly isn’t a pushover.
Sorry it took a while to write this up and sorry for the video of Sunny cutting off. I didn’t realize it had stopped recording but decided to add here anyways to give you a glimpse of her in action. She is something else. I have ordered the DVD of the event so you will all be able to see 🙂
Kari didn’t stutter or seem unsure of her statement of bigger and better things to come from David. She stated it as someone who knows the plans. I have no doubts that the best is yet to come 🙂

Thank you for the Sounds of David recap! Like everyone else I wish I could have been there with you to celebrate David’s awesomeness and to meet so many fans whose names I see every day online but never met in person. Just a mere 3000 miles kept us apart. I’m always proud to be a fan of David’s but especially now after reading your words and seeing how he touches the lives of everyone he meets. I always wanted to know what the American Idol coaches thought of him and there you have it. The song by Aaron Paul, caught my attention with it’s simple melody and beautiful lyrics. I loved Aaron Paul’s youtube description:

Spending time with fan friends is just the best! It looks like all of you had a lovely day. The one word that jumps to my mind as I read through the article is RESPECT.
When industry people take the time to show how they still love and respect David, after 5 years, it shows that he does have a bright future in music.
When fans STILL travel hundreds of miles to honor him and his career, it shows he does have a a solid fan base.
My only wish is that someone could have streamed the event on UStream 🙂 I’ll be looking forward to the DVD highlights.
Someone has a twitter account called FlatDavid2014. I have a feeling there might be some “David” sightings in the near future.

Nothing but praise and admiration. The DVD will show the details of the coaches, Dean Kaelin and Masterclasslady. Hopefully they captured Kari’s words.

They are. It was so much fun chatting with those I’ve met. Meeting several for the first time is always an experience when they recognize your name 🙂

A bright future for sure. Their opinions of David were formed during his AI run when he was 16/17 years old. They have yet to experience the David since then. I can’t wait to see that happen. I agree that it does show he has a solid fan base. Many are sitting on the sidelines waiting for his return. A livestream didn’t even occur to me. It would have been great.

Oh and I wanted to say that the auction part of the day was crazy funny. Sunny is a natural. During the auction of a David poster she encouraged us to bid by calling it an wrinkle eraser haha, she gets us lol.
Winnie is a mean bidding machine!!! Angelica can vouch for me lol Winnie walked away with some great stuff.
I also want to thank Blueberryice, she is the kindest, most giving, loving archangel I’ve ever met. I know we don’t see her here often but she is a fierce supporter of all things David and his fans.

I have checked my wall and all those David pics are so vibrant and engaging. Nothing fading there. Since passing the one year mark I find myself feeling that little buzz of excitement that big things will be coming soon. Nice to read your story of others sharing my emotions.
Went to see “West Side Story” this past weekend. I enjoyed spending a lovely evening with friends, but there was such a tug at my heart while listening to music not sung by David. I kept trying to insert his voice into the melodies. Almost painful at times. So joyful to find him waiting in my car for the drive home. So lucky to have so much material from David now. And still wanting more, haha.
Tawna, I too loved the mention of David standing his ground. I have seen him do that and it is impressive to watch.

just came back from check up with doctor. got the stitches out but have to stay in sling/brace and will not even begin physical therapy for another 3 weeks.

I’ve been listening to Paramour every time granddaughter is in car with me because she says I have to be familiar with their music before the concert lol First non David concert I attend because 16 yr old asked me to go with her 🙂 But I quickly put on David (cd’s 1-6 all in car) to make things right in the world 🙂

And I am kinda excited. Almost into single digits!!!
I listened to a recent concert by JGroban (PBS Live At Lincoln Center). Nice. He sang a song called Brave. I loved the lyrics. He did a good job. Love his voice and obvious passion. But…. his eyes do not have the same shine as DA’s. His passion, (although authentic), doesn’t pulse like a strobe-lined sunrise. I listen to and with him. But DA… He listens to Me. He somehow hears my heart and climbs inside like it is his own heart and we somehow share the same one. He is never surprised at this. That is the most surprising part of it all. His lack of comfort with “out there” and his total and complete and indigenous occupancy of a shared “within”.
How can I welcome home someone who has never left?

I hear you, Bluesky. David is the real deal and he connects to the audience and his fans like no other artist I’ve ever come across. Sure I’ve heard good voices through the years but nobody who has the voice, the power, the humility, conviction and compassion all in one person. I think he knows on a deep level that we get him, that we really get him and that we understand the messages he tries to convey when he sings to us. And the fact that he knows this makes our journey with him all the more sweeter.

He enunciates like no other singer. Not only can we understand every word (unlike other artists) but he teases us by playing with certain words at any given moment. He understands the power and effects of phrasing. So young. So talented. Such a delight. So honored to be a fan.

I loved that you were there with the fans and let us enjoy the day’s events vicariously! I wanted to be there so much but it ended up just being the wrong weekend for me (had out of state guests.) Your write up was wonderful, with the videos, pictures, etc. Thank you so much, I was so hoping we would get the details.

There are many others too that are so on point in expressing how we all feel. I love that we are all in this together with so much love. I love being with David fans more than anything I can think of—-can’t wait to be with you again soon!

I cried and laughed at how she shared how “I” feel with me, yes yes and yes I feel all those things.

We don’t normally make mention of Elder Archuleta but I’m going to make an exception because I’m so dang proud, he is now a zone leader (see below). Not only for his accomplishments but more and more I understand what David meant when he said, “I’ll be able to grow in ways I haven’t been able to”. Can you just imagine? All this while serving.

Missions are divided into districts and zones. There are several districts within a zone and several zones within the mission. A zone leader is the leader/mentor over the missionaries of several districts. He trains and mentors the district leaders in their service and watches over the missionaries in his zone. It is a great honor and responsibility to be called as a zone leader. Only the best of the best have that opportunity.

I became a Great Great Aunt yesterday and my Godchild is now a Grandmother. Oh My my great niece is a Mom to Easton. Time does fly and these kids grow up so darn fast. Lots to celebrate!!

After reading your post today (haven’t been here much lately due to work), you didn’t really need my input after all for you have captured much of the details. I could have not said it any better. Also, thanks for introducing me to Kari. She is such a lovely lady. Got me teary during her speech. It was also nice talking to Sunny Hilden for a bit. She is one funny lady! Got us in stitches! Somehow, the still picture of the video of Elevator you posted on #10 looks like David was wearing a Yarmulke (Jewish skullcap). Actually, they are headphones, but at first glance it looks like skullcap. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. LOL!
