Sightseeing Through Chile For Elder Archuleta

There are wondrous places in Chile that Elder Archuleta most probably will not get to see while busy on his mission. Perhaps he will make a trip back there one day in the future to visit more of this beautiful country that he will have spent two years of his life.
Chile is a country of extreme contrasts from volcanoes of the Andes Mountains to ancient rainforests and from the Atacama Desert in the north to massive glaciers in the south. In between these areas are waterfalls, beaches, lakes, rivers, forests and islands. If you visit the north, south, east and west of Chile in one day you have the possibility of experiencing all four seasons. With these unusual changes in temperature and weather, Chile attracts thousands of tourists each year. If you’ve ever wondered how long Chile is, it’s approximately the length from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean or from the west coast to the east coast of the U.S. And at it’s widest point, it stretches for only 112 miles.
Come with me to do some virtual sightseeing through Chile to find places that David may want to visit should he decide to return. Aside from the tourist attractions which look awesome, by the way, there are some not as famous places that David may find appealing, too.
The penguins of Punta de Arenas
Punta Arenas in Magdalena Island, a popular tourist attraction in Chile has one of the largest penguin breeding sites. The island was named a national nature reserve because many years ago, commercial fishing in this area caused the penguin population to decline. But through a ban on commercial fishing, penguins were protected and penguin populations have increased.
Every fall, penguins leave the safety of the ocean, their natural habitat, and march for twenty days to a place called “Oamack”. That’s where they choose their mates, procreate, protect and feed their offspring and after a while they return to the sea. Later, their babies go to the ocean, where they stay for four years, and when they reach their adult life, they follow the same pattern of their parents. → These creatures are a sight to behold!
Easter Island and the Moais, the giant volcanic rock statues
Easter Island, a tiny island in the Pacific Ocean between Chile and Tahiti and now a national park was isolated for centuries from the outside world. Stumbled upon by Dutch settlers on Easter in 1772, the majority of the population are original inhabitants, Rapanui people, who developed their own distinctive culture best known by the moai, huge statues with elongated faces carved out of volcanic ash thousands of years ago. How and why the moai were built is a mystery. Each one weighs over 20 tons and is about 70 feet tall. There are hundreds of them on the island, some in rows, others laying broken on the ground. Some say Easter Island is the most enchanting place in the world place to watch the sunset. There are other activities to do on Easter Island, like going to the beach, taking a tour of the volcanic craters, diving and surfing.
Cerro San Cristóbal
Cerro San Cristóbal is a hill in Santiago, the capitol of Chile, with a beautiful view overlooking the city and, on a clear day, the Andes Mountains. At the top of the hill is a 72 foot statue of the Virgin Mary that can be reached by cable car or a long hike. I doubt that Elder Archuleta has had a chance to hike or take a ride on a cable car to see the view in Santiago. Cerro San Cristóbal has Santiago’s largest public park with a botanical garden and zoo.
World’s Largest Swimming Pool
You don’t have to be a swimmer to be curious about this, the world’s largest man-made outdoor pool at a resort in Algarrobo, a small town on Chile‘s central coast. The pool is the size of 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools! It’s filled with 66 million gallons of crystal clear seawater that it gets from the ocean and it’s warmth from the sun. It was listed officially as the largest (3/5 of a mile) and the deepest (115 feet) swimming pool in the Guinness Book of World Records in December of 2006. Why build a pool right near the ocean? Simple. The water in the nearby coast is cold and dangerous. Swimming is prohibited.

The 6000 foot granite walls of Torres del Paine National Park
Torres Del Paine is a national park located in the south of Chile, The park‘s main attraction are the three giant granite peaks that were carved out by glaciers. The peaks rise 8200 feet above ground. The park has dramatic landscapes, lakes, mountains, glaciers, valleys and forests with exotic birds roaming the area. It’s also popular for hiking and rock climbing. Because of it’s beauty, this park is referred to as “heaven on earth”.
Valle Nevado in the Andes Mountains
Does David ski or snowboard? I don’t know but the most popular skiing resort in South America is in Chile and draws skiers from all over the world, equipped with bilingual experts, not that David would need one. A helicopter drops skiers from the top of the mountain for a ride down the hill.
Valle de la Luna
Valle de la Luna is located in the Atacama Desert, some parts of which have not received rain in 200 or more years. This scene is the result of centuries of wind and floods on sand and stone. The large sand dunes and stone formations mimic the surface of the moon, and gave the area it’s name which translated means “Valley of the Moon”.
The Viña del Mar International Song Festival
I think David would enjoy this song festival held annually during February since 1960 in Viña del Mar, Chile. It is considered the most important musical event in South America. It competes in two categories, pop music and folk songs, interspersed with performances by artists from all over the world.
Villarica Volcano
This snow-capped volcano looks harmless but it is active. When there’s no seismic activity in the crater, visitors can make their way up to the top either by hiking or on a guided tour. For a close look into the bubbling volcano, helicopters fly overhead regularly. It takes 4 to 6 hours to get up and then down this volcano. The way down is a combination of sledding and walking.
The glaciers of Tierra Del Fuego
The Tierra Del Fuego or “Land of Fire” got it’s name from Ferdinand Magellan who spotted fires burning along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in 1520. Tierra Del Fuego is an archipelago (an expanse of water with many scattered islands) near Antarctica, comprised by channels and lakes, the ocean, forests and the Andes Mountains. The climate is windy with much rainfall and cold but warmer than one would assume. In winter, the average temperature 28 Fahrenheit. In summer, it rarely rises far beyond 50 Fahrenheit.
The House of Eleven Women
Angelica found this and passed it along to me. Casa 11 Mujeres is a house on top of a cliff near Santiago built to fit a family with eleven daughters, from age four to twenty. Built on a 45 degree slope, the house is actually a vacation home that stands on a site sloping down with a view of Cachagua Beach on the Pacific Ocean. It has three levels and space for entertaining.
I’m sure Elder Archuleta has already learned about many of these places when talking to local Chileans and to people he’s met on his mission. He’s probably learned of these and many more. The combination of historical places, cultural sites and natural wonders make Chile a special place for relaxation, fun and learning. The beautiful beaches, ski resorts and mountain range add to the appeal. If he chooses to visit Chile again in the future, he is sure to have a memorable experience.

I did watch the videos. I love the last one, so many beautiful spots. I need to hit the lottery and go there for a month, seriously. I love nature, and sightseeing. When we travel, I make my husband take the “scenic routes.” It makes him crazy because it takes forever to get there. And if I see a sign for anything more than twice, I’m going! LOL (He’s gotten used to it. :))
When traveling, I am the perfect example of: “It’s about the journey, not just the destination.” I want to see and enjoy everything I can along the way.

Oh, wow, what an interesting post, Bebe! You are a great geography teacher! I want to go tour Chile, there are so many interesting things there; I loved the story about the penquins! 🙂 And what a pool! I could never, ever go out on that ledge! haha Too bad that David can’t see a lot of that beautiful scenery while he is there, I hope he can go back at sometime in his life.

Once again, our personal tour guide has taken us to places most of us will probably never see in real life. Thanks Bebe!!!! It’s so interesting to think of SOUTH America as having glaciers and snow. I’ve just never really thought about it until David landed there. I guess I really did need to think about it…. now I do. 🙂
Never having been in a helicopter, and really not having that at the top of any bucket list, I’d be willing to strap myself in to see some of the beautiful scenery of Chili! That waterfall, my gosh, that is awesome (I like waterfalls). And the penguins. They just seem so carefree and un-assuming. Love ’em. The ledge house… nope… good for some but not for me. I can’t get near the rails at Bryce Canyon here in Utah. Anyway, thanks again, Bebe. 🙂

It should come as no surprise that Paula Abdul wanted to squish David Archuleta after his Idol audition in Season 7. American Idol runner up and pop sensation David Archuleta is set to release his new studio album “No Matter How Far” on March 26, 2013.
David is currently serving a two-year mission in South America for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “No Matter How Far” features a mix of new recorded material and previously unreleased U.S. tracks. The first single, “Don’t Run Away”, produced by British music producers The Nexus (David Sneddon and James Bauer-Mein), will be serviced to the AC Radio format in February.
David reached second place on the seventh season (2008) hit show American Idol as one of the youngest to perform on the show at age 16. He released his self-titled debut album the following year. Both the album and its lead single “Crush” peaked at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 and the Billboard Hot 100 charts, respectively. “Crush” went on to sell over 2 million downloads. David has since released the albums “Christmas From The Heart”, “The Other Side of Down”, and the covers album “BEGIN.”. He was the featured vocalist on the Mormon Tabernacle Choirs’ “Glad Christmas Tidings” album and PBS Special in 2011, and released “Forevermore” an album of Filipino standards in the Philippines in 2012.
“No Matter How Far” will be released on Entertainment One.

After I’ve flatlined this past Monday, David rushed to give me an electric shock today, and BAM!………………I’M ALIVE!!!!
Wheeew! What a total SHOCK this is to me! My heart and brain are having the worst total overload of my entire life. I AM AMAZED! Superman was at it again!
Now, I am starting to think that when “Don’t Run Away” was accidentally released anonymously last year on YouTube, it was probably a part of a bigger plan. David’s team was probably testing the waters. They want to know how much reaction it would get from the fanbase. We all should admit that we all went gaga over the song and wished that David would release those songs from the vault. What we didn’t know at the time was they were lurking everywhere (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, fansites, etc.) and reading all our comments. And now THIS! There’s a saying, “be careful with what you wish for”. In this case, we could not be careful enough! Enuf said!

If fans and administrators were not here and on the other sites, writing and keeping the buzz going (and thanks to TOfan of SnowAngelz, the laughter), if there was not a huge video about being here in 2014, the enormous Book/Card at Christmas, would there be an album coming out?
If there was not the love for his music stated over and over on twitter, with the admiration for songs such as “The Prayer”, would there be a wonderful new album coming in March?
I think that the first year may be known as the hardest because we had to see if we could or wanted to continue and the sites kept going, never faltering. I believe that it is all a testimony to just how much David and his music means to everyone.
David has many multi talented and loyal fans.

I just got home from seeing Les Miserables so was unaware of the great news!
So, having just seen Les Miserables, my reaction to the movie- tears; my reaction to the thought of little David – engrossed in this musical and learning it by heart- tears; today’s announcement of a new album- tears; the picture of David in #55- tears. Tears of joy, tears of sadness, tears of thankfullness. I think I have cried for more reasons in the last four years than all the other years of my life!

Bebe, good to know what goes on in Chile! It shows how much we have in common with the beaches, skiing, beautiful mountains and countryside. I enjoy eating their fruits especially at Christmas time.
We will soon have new music and it is good to also realize that beyond us the fans, David is taking his career seriously by keeping his music new. Abrra Thank you for including my vid in the unplugged it’s such an honor, thanks to all of you for always appriciated my works, like I said i’m not so good with words not even in my own language so since I learn how to edit a vid I’d like to express my thoughts on that so I don’t have worry about spelling or grammars lol in fact I’d like to write something along with the vid like you suggested before but it’s kinda hard!! so I sent just only the vid !!! i enjoyed doing it, David is easy to work with haha I was in tears quite a number of times during editing those vids, he just touches our hearts in such a way that I can’t describe !! it’s a strange but great feelings.
I’m sorry that I couldn’t join unplugged lately I miss you all and those funny chat too, but real life gets in the way !! We have activities on every Saturday morning since I was back from Bangkok, in fact we’re having a wedding today too, so I couldn’t sit in front of the pc for too long 😦 I hope I could find some times again soon to join you all 🙂

In fact, I was in the process of doing just that when the news of David’s new album came to my iphone. It recircuited my system to function in only ODD mode for several hours. I had to reboot with a good night’s sleep. I needed it too because today was my first day off in 20 days and all 12 hour shifts due to a crisis at work.
I spent the day in a very productive, enjoyable way. First thing I did, of course, was preorder the new CD on Amazon.
Then I was off to my monthly Archulunch to meet my bff and concert buddy, Biz. We tried a new Greek restaurant and I had some amazing Spanakopita, (spinach pie in phyllo crust). As requested last night, (you know who you are) I am posting the pics of dessert we ordered. Nut roll and Chocolate Baklava.
On the drive home, I got a text from Abrra showing me the valentine she bought for David and whoa nellie! I was downtown at the time, so I pulled over and stopped at a little shop and got this one for him.
Then I drove home and took a long nap. tada! I’m ready for anything now.

Your ninja skills are amazing! It proves that David has a fan base that is diverse. If you read Mr.Reed’s bio at the bottom of the page, it shows he has a solid grasp on what he wants in a career.Talented people recognize the gift in others. In my heart, I know that there have been seeds planted in the minds of (music business) those who have met David along the way. Even though he is away, the videos posted by the LDS Church of the devotional have established that David is still a great singer. The visible fan base that comments on the fan sites are generally not professionals. It’s nice to see articles like this one which speaks to how industry people view David’s talent. That he is releasing a 3rd album defies all the rules. It shows how a career can thrive without all the trappings of a major label.

MT, I saw that NMHF was listed under rock and that hmmm. My granddaughter listened to DRA a couple times last night (she really likes it) and commented on how this has a different sound. Does mgmt give the music type to the sellers or the the sellers take it upon themselves? Really makes me wonder what the rest of the songs are going to be like. I know Wait is going to be on it and I for one have loved it from day one. David said he was going to try to have it released in the US and he found a way 🙂
