Of David Archuleta, Brands, and Five Amazing “Piano Guys”

When I see something wonderful that talented people are doing, I always get excited and I wonder, “How is this going to fit into what DA will need, or be doing, or have available, etc. when he comes home?”
Why? Because: I believe.
I believe that things that bless others will also bless him. I believe that because there are so many changes happening within the music industry and how “brands” are created, produced and marketed, that a new paradigm is emerging that will bless his life as well as the lives of others. I believe DA is young, savvy, focused and inspired. I do not say that it will all be roses, smooth sailing, or that everything will magically fall into place, but I do believe absolutely that new horizons of opportunity will be available to him. And when he is blessed, so are we.
My case in point for today: ThePianoGuys.
I had been hearing about Jon Schmidt, a creative composer/pianist, for a long time and have gone to two of his concerts. He is well known in our area and offers concerts each year. When I first saw him on You Tube, I saw this title above the vid: ThePianoGuys. I thought that was a little strange, since he was the only person in the videos. Later, I saw several vids where he was performing duets with Steven Sharp Nelson, a wonderful cellist. I loved the music but was still a bit confused by the title. Being that I am a bit slow, it was not until this last summer when I attended a concert close to home that I caught the full vision of what they, ThePianoGuys were all about.
From their Official Channel:
Five guys from different walks of life with different skill sets, from different places — each had built their own careers: a piano store owner/videographer (Paul Anderson), a music producer (Al van der Beek), a videographer/editor (Tel Stewart), a pianist (Jon Schmidt), and a cellist (Steven Sharp Nelson). But all with the same ambition: to inspire the world with the talents given them. Each met through seemingly-happenstance, but divinely-influenced circumstances. Combined, they had the tools, the passion, and the drive necessary to independently build one of the most successful music video production companies in the world. They are famous for taking their instruments (especially grand pianos) and video equipment to unbelievable places. But above all, ThePianoGuys love what they do — and it shows. At the end of the day, they are ordinary guys that love their families and that thank God for the opportunity they have to do what they love.
It was then that I finally realized that ThePianoGuys was a collaborative effort: when you go to their website, the three that seldom appear as performers on video are given top billing and space. All are equal to the importance of the creation of their “brand”. What is most exciting to me is that their very successful brand was chosen, produced and offered to the public on their own terms, not those of someone else. No record company told them what they could or could not be. No marketing body handed them a pre-fabricated identity, relegating them by color, size, or sound to fit neatly into one of the few molded shapes allowed in a modern music cafeteria tray. They became famous through YouTube, posting their first video in March of 2010. Two years and 39 videos later, many produced a week apart, they now have a total of 205,419,123 views and 1,178,305 subscribers to their channel.
In December 2011, they released their first album and their second album, released in 2012 reached number one on the Billboard New Age Albums chart.
So… without further ado, here is an example of what can be accomplished when people follow their passion and remain true to themselves.

Now, from time to time they do record their arrangements/videos with a singer. And I have a pretty good idea who I think would sound best. You might want to save some time on your calendar for a certain returned missionary in 2014 Piano Guys. Can you say “Broken”?
Post script: “The Piano Guys” last concert in SLC was produced and recorded for PBS and they just recently got signed by a label: Sony Masterworks. On first hearing this I worried. But then I saw the company they were in…
Placido Domingo, Jascha Heifetz, Vittorio Grigolo, Wynton Marsallis, Yo-Yo Ma, etc. …and I guess I am willing to believe that it is a “good place”.
Conclusion: Talented people are leading fulfilling lives sharing their passion and abilities on their own terms. Can David Archuleta be successful doing this? Things beyond our knowing are aligning for him and others like him.
Without question: Yes. I believe.

Ironically, The Piano Guys, who got their name from a piano store in St. George, Utah, are a quintet featuring only two musicians – only one being a pianist. Store owner Paul Anderson devised a Facebook promotional page and a YouTube channel featuring well-established, self-described “New Age Classical” pianist Jon Schmidt , who teamed up musically with Steven Sharp Nelson , an innovative cellist. Together, Schmidt and Nelson form the musical core of The Piano Guys, with Anderson – who has since closed the store – joining forces with genius co-videographer Tel Stewart in creating The Piano Guys’ videos. Bluesky, that would be so wonderful if they could collaborate together. They would make some sweet music! Each are talented in their own way and together…watch out! I also “believe”! David has already surpassed what a lot of people has ever thought he could do. And as one of his dedicated fans, I was so happy everytime something was announced that just blew us away. Kind of surprised at some things, but knowing that David can “pull” anything off, he is just that talented. He is so very exciting! I am so proud of this young man! Don’t think there will be any brakes on David once he returns and puts his all back into his career! #2014 ♥
The name of the movie that they showed on the BYU channel between David and MOTAB was called “The Lamp”. It was a Genie Lamp that had “Just Believe” inscribed on it.

I am finally back online, yayyyy!! Family got together and got me a new computer! 🙂 But the first one had “issues” and had to be returned. The internet wouldn’t work on it. 😦 No David? Can’t have that!! Exchanged it and nowit’s all good and the chisel and stone keyboard is gone!! 😉 (Just have to get used to the new one. And from XP to Windows8? This is gonna be fun. LOL) But at least I am back in business. Oh, and the sound (Beats Audio) is awesome!!! Now I just need a really good set of headphones. 🙂

What a great article! The Piano Guys are so good. I love that last video with them plucking the piano strings. Such a unique idea! That is what David needs, a great group to work with that he can toss ideas around with to come up with something that works for him, and I know he’ll do it when he returns.

I actually could say I loved the sound, arrangements, the fun! I really really want them to do a David song! I could so see a collaboration with David, they are unique as is our David. Somehow this must happen!

Thanks Bluesky! I love the Piano Guys. I’ve seen some of their Videos before, but never really took the time to research. Seeing musicians like this, does as you say show that real musicians, artists can make it while being authentic and true to themselves. I believe David has that kind of conviction, talent and determination. It is so refreshing in this day and age.

Bluesky, thanks for introducing me to ThePianoGuys. What a great coming together of the perfect fit of art, craft, and marketing savvy. What I love besides their remarkable talent, is the innovative way they have found to set themselves apart from all the rest. Like performing on a moving train, on top of a mountain, in the snow, on a city warehouse rooftop, etc.. One comment I read on YouTube was, “Do they have a helicopter?” It was only then that I realized these videos were even more amazing than I had first thought. I could go for David putting out a video like once or twice a month!
The other innovative thing I love about them is that they are having great success doing it their way and bypassing radio altogether. Can we just agree that the best music being created and performed today is not found on radio? The success of an artist is no longer dependent on the old institutions and mechanisms. It’s a new age and David has come along right on the cusp of it. I am so hopeful the right team serendipitously comes together for him on his return.
Here is another video from them, just released for Christmas 3 weeks ago and already close to 2 million views. One of my very favorite songs. O Come, Emmanuel which was originally to be placed in the article but there was only so much room, so Bluesky decided on putting a link or in comments instead.

Eight notes to infinity for the cello. Steven Sharp Nelson definitely has some fun here. And did you notice Jon Schmidt in the wig? What characters!
Dayzee: Erm.. you are kidding me, right? But how the videographer was able to coordinate all four shots so perfectly.. that is some talent. In DA’s latest video we got 3. Can you imagine 4? In some of the vids there are 8 Stevens, all different shots. I think I could get used to that! DA… I have an idea. ^_^
Emmegirl: Yes! I love to read the notes that are included with each video, where they tell about how and why they made it. On this one, they say something about how this is one of their favorite audiences. I got the impression that they have play for these folks more than once or twice. Good people!
MT: That is what I wish for as well: talented people around him that are in sync with how to best present his uniqueness and help to build his own “brand”. How amazing that would be.
Oh, Djafan! I am glad they brought a smile to your face. Try “Beethovens Secrets” on their channel, boy, I love that one. Honestly, I have listened to several collaborations they have done with various singers and… well… I like the instrumentals better. But if it were David Archuleta!!! Oh, my!!! I intend to put that intention out there. It has a year and a bit to simmer.
And their expertise with the videos is to me, just as amazing as the music. One thing: you do not even notice how amazing the videos are! They do not intrude – just help to imagine and build on the interpretation of the music. Oh… how I would LOVE our DA to have that kind of talent helping him to showcase his sound.
Heidijoy: Me, too. I have heard of Jon S. so often, that I just didn’t really appreciate what he and their group were creating until this last fall. I am so excited for them and for the whole idea of new ways to bring forth talent to the people who really want to hear Music! Like Angelica said: not radio!
Angelica had to rein me in, cause I was getting loopy trying to decide which were my fav Piano Guys vids. I just wanted to give an example of several different genres that they do: Fun, Romantic and Inspirational. (Yeh, those are genres. I say so. ^_^)
Music can be healing, inspiring, and fun – all at the same time. This SO sounds like DA! Please, world, get ready for 2014!!

Yep. I had to go back on the wire connection to get uninterrupted service. I think it has to do (in my area) with all the new toys for Christmas and so many more people using wi-fy. Each area has at least two channels for wi-fy, but not always much more than that. When the signals quarrel with each other – one must talk to ones neighbors… or, just go back on a wire. Since I use the computer for extended spaces of time in contact with others, I need uninterrupted linkage.
Well… that was probs more than you wanted to know. But the upshot is: I empathize!!!

Oh, Bluesky. Look what you’ve done. I’ve become addicted to ThePianoGuys videos, watching them all night and when I woke up this morning. Incredible talents and passionate musicians! I was particularly touched to the core by the LOTR The Hobbit arrangement since I had just watched the 3D movie (right after our Outreach & Archuparty last Dec. 29th) with my family & Archufriends (Naree, JR4DA, Lorma & Carla). Beethoven’s Secrets also made me tearful. I am such a sap! Reading the work behind the videos made me admire them and their work so much more. Beautiful, just beautiful!
There must be something about Utah which brings out so much love for music in these wonderful people. Their videos show how gorgeous their homestate is as they keep discovering great sites for shoots of their videos. My daughter also recently became a fan of a young Utahn violinist, Lindsay Stirling, who also works in tandem with a very talented videographer, and they have churned out so many videos in just a year or so with millions of views. I am excited for David to come come to these new breed of musicians who have an incredible following on the internet, have sold out concert tour performances, and aren’t even popular on radio, as Angelica invaluably pointed out. Collaborations with David in the future? Oh, I sincerely hope so!

Thank you for the most enjoyable evening, watching Piano Guys’ videos.
They are innovative, charming guys who put a lot of effort into their work. I
watched them all and the one by Coldplay “Viva La Vida” that you used in
your article is my favorite.
Pre-David, I used to follow singer/songwriter, Matthew Jordan. In terms of
talent, he’s no David Archuleta by any means. He’s a musician in
California who isn’t signed to a major label nor has his music ever been played
on radio. But he has a universe of fans on youtube. Youtube is like a world of
great musicians and it enables new artists to reach new fans in all corners of the
globe. I’m still on his mailing list so I get mail from him once in a while. And
he’s doing well, touring all over the US. His music has been used on MTV and
in international ads for Nokia cell phones. He also just released an EP which is
already doing well. Point is he’s doing it his way without radio. He’s just a few years older than David who I hope will go a similar route when he comes back.

I could not put all of that in an article and it expresses better than I could WHY I get so excited for David when I see all of this. I truly believe there are opportunities coming for more and more people like this. And they help to pave the way for DA. Good things happening to good people do not cancel each other out. There is no competition. It all just expands and blesses everyones life. Lindsey Stirling has a good following and the word is that she and the PianoGuys have a collaboration coming out in Jan. Hope so.
Then… please TPG… save some time for DA. Good as you are (and you are super!) you have not worked with a voice like his.
But in a few…. I am going to start stalking your video comments with DA suggestions. TPG are known for taking ideas from their fans. They do listen.

Bluesky, I didn’t know how to say earlier that the reason I was enjoying the piano guys so much aside from the fabulous instrumentals is that there are no vocals. If it’s not David’s voice then it won’t work. I know how it sounds but it is what it is. These guys can make their instruments emote and that is very difficult to do. Thank you for the link, it made me cry in a good way.

The “Love Story meets Viva la Vida” video was the first one I saw of TPG on You Tube. I think I played it several times a day for 5 months. It is no longer included on their official You Tube site because in over a year and a half, they have not been able to get full permission from the original musicians for them to present it. Silly musicians!!!! So I wanted to be especially sure you got to see that one. I am glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the info on Matthew Jordan, I will check him out! Wow, we just never know what new ways and things will come. Fun times!

Djafan – Yes. I know. No argument here! I appreciate the few videos they have put out with vocalists. But with the one exception of “Peponi”, I like the instrumentals much better. (And maybe I like Peponi because it is in Swahili? And I can’t understand the words?) They are able to make their instruments sing and emote. I can put any emotion I am feeling into the music and it sings to me alone. In my own language. I would love to hear them do a song like “Broken” even without DA. AND… I really think DA would be a match to their art IF he ever got a chance to sing with them.
They might not even NEED the helicopter then.
Just sayin
(PS I can never say “IF” without thinking of the stepmother in “The Slipper and the Rose”. So: for every “IF”, there is somewhere, a Good Fairy able to make it happen.)

My husband has been teaching music for the past 30-something years. Sometimes when I’m playing music that impresses him but is not familiar to him he’ll ask me about it. It’s happened twice so far, the first time in January 2008, when David auditioned for American Idol. It happened again last night when I was in ThePianoGuys vortex.

Bluesky; Loved your thoughts as I too believe that David will be a name ‘brand’ which will stand the test of time. I can’t help but be excited for what lies ahead! My youngest enjoyed the Stars Wars parody by The Piano Guys & thought it was cool. How innovative & creative to not only showcase their talent but also make it fun & appealing to an universal audience … just like David! 😉 Music can be uplifting … I hope my kids will understand that and appreciate it rather than thinking it was something they had to do. I am reminded of a quote by Bono: “Music can change the world because it can change people.” I think of how David has done just that. I’ve always enjoyed classical instrumental music but with David, I’ve gained a greater appreciation of the voice as a musical instrument & well, there is no Voice that induces the chill factor quite like his does. Even though David has set an unreachable standard of musical excellence, somehow he has widened my appreciation of other musicians & it’s been enriching to rediscover the beauty of music through it all.
Looking back on this year, it’s been so much fun to share with all of you the joy of supporting David that I just want to say a huge Thank You! to the creative & hardworking admins: Abrra, Angelica, Bebe, Dja, and all the wonderful writers, Betsy, Bluesky, Dakgal, Emmegirl, Funnygirl, Gladys, MT, PaulaFOD, Pocoelsy, Ray, SandyBeaches, Silverfox, & Sky for your humor, thought provoking, & insightful contributions. You all make my day! Here’s wishing everyone a wonderful, healthy, safe & happy 2013!

I am not surprised they got his attention. I keep reading on the You Tube comments how Music Teachers and even teachers of non-music topics are playing the videos in class to inspire their students. The beginning of a revolution? Rebellion against the spoon-fed “labels” of “this is music”? I really hope so. People seem to love MUSIC. And to recognize it when they really hear it. This can only be good for DA. And for the (I hope) many young people who can rise up to more than they thought they could be.
About TPG – It seems such a blessing to me: That they all have such different talents and how together they just compliment and expand on each others abilities. I am looking forward to looking forward. If that makes sense.

I sometimes wondered how David could reach out and captivate people from other parts of the world. It seemed strange that people from so far away could so deeply feel his spirit, often in a language unknown to them. But now here he is away from my part of the world, singing and speaking a language I do not understand and still he touches my life every day. There are just no boundaries.
Betsy, he certainly is an excellent therapist for us all.

I wasn’t really plugging Matt Jordan in my comment. I was just using him as an example of how young aspiring singer/songwriters are bypassing radio and making a successful career for themselves using youtube. There’s no comparison between Matt Jordan and David Archuleta. David’s talent is legions above that of all singers, IMHO.

I was touched that he took a picture just for us. Maybe he will start blogging to us in the coming year. His glistening eyes show how much he appreciates that we remembered his birthday and Christmas. I can just imagine how he felt when he opened the cards and packages Kari sent over.

Glad you pointed out “The First Noel” at the end. After the song, a little boy gets introduced to him and then the moderators ask him about his new album (TOSOD) etc. I almost teared up watching, remembering David’s gentle manner with people. He’s just so special. The sound isn’t the best at the end and the camera angle is awkward but it’s worth watching the whole video. His glorious voice would really be enough for us but in addition he is one of the most genuine humble people on the face of the earth. I miss him so much!
