Jamie Grace ~ Reminding me of David Archuleta

There is a song from the musical, “Finnigans Rainbow” that includes the line: “When I’m not near the girl I love, I love the girl I’m near!” That sentiment is fairly understandable for the character in the story, but it doesn’t really ‘work for me’ where DA and his music is concerned. *_*
Still, now and then I run into a really fun individual that has SOME of the same qualities that I so admire in the Voice. Ergo… “Reminding me of DA”.
For today, Jamie Grace is “Reminding me of DA”, and I wonder, have I found DA’s “Sister-from-another-mother”?
Jamie Grace is a 20-year-old singer/songwriter who just graduated from college (she began early). She has had a bundle of challenges thrown at her since early childhood. Yet, sustained by the love and support of her family, especially her relationship with her sister, she has not only overcome, but somehow, thrived. The beginning of her upward journey began with a set of drums given to her by her father. Instead of the ”girl with Tourette’s syndrome”, she became the “girl who plays music”. This last year she was nominated for a Grammy. She writes of her early life: “I grew up a sick kid, Tourette’s syndrome, ADHD, asthma, pneumonia… my sister was one of the few constants in my life offering a smile, hug or movie night on top of her patience and strength.”
Here is the official video of her song, “Hold Me”, featuring Toby Mac, who discovered her and has been supporting her career.
I hear ‘happy’ in her voice. I hear DA’s funky rhythm and blues. I hear a joy that shines without being glossy, a glow that generously invites, rather than the pulsing strobe of manufactured necessity.
(DA… I want to hear a duet. I am seriously asking the universal powers-that-be to work on this… ((You have 1.5 years, powers…. Do it.)) )
This video is of her song, “Not Alone”. Jamie tells about writing it:
“I wrote this song in just a few hours sitting at my piano needing to pour my heart. Having had friends who have survived cancer and other illnesses but also having had a good friend go to be with Jesus after a battle with cancer just this year I’ve seen firsthand the strength it takes to endure that type of pain. This particular song shares the story of a mother with a child who is sick but she is yet understanding that God’s arms are right there and she’s not alone. I hope this is an encouragement to you whether you’ve face difficulty with illness, finances, relationships or whatever it is. “We may have pain, but not as great as His name.”
Jamie… I hear the sweet, breathy vowels like those used by Lights. I love those “oooos” at the beginning. The depth and feeling in the delivery. The courage. The commitment. Yeah, I’m signing up for the DA/JG concert!
For Christmas, she gathered lots of family and friends and wrote the song “Christmas Together”.
The chorus includes these words:
“And unless ya got 20 people,
stuck on an elevator,
I can’t imagine a time —
When we’re all this close!”
Seriously? An elevator? Somehow that just rang a bell with me. ^_^
On a more serious note, Jamie just posted a new video on Sep 6 2012 for a young cousin who is in the hospital. She covers a song by Emeli Sandé, “My Kind of Love”. Jamie changes the last verse and adds an impromptu chorus at the end as a message:
“You see the times, they’re changing, I’m sure of nothing that I know
Except this is us, this is love. This is where I’m home
And while hearts breaking, and nothing is for keeps,
This is us, this is love. This is where I sleep”
In my view, this song and her delivery of it, is a rather good summation or post-script to the message from DA’s album: Begin.
Anyway…..

Finnigan’s Rainbow? Oh wow…. that brings back such fun childhood memories! There are some movies I’ve seen during my childhood that I thought I would never meet people who have seen them too, much less appreciate them! Finnigan’s is one of them 🙂

Thanks Bluesky for finding another gem! I definitely can hear David there and they would do great duets, blending in together! What a concert that would be. Loved all the songs and the last one with the little girls was so much fun. I love those kind of songs where you can understand the words and there isn’t all that autotune junk! So fun to see you passing by JR!! Yeah, Finnigans Rainbow was always one of my favorite films. I loved the music! The story was amazingly silly and yet could strike a deep chord within me because of the meaning in the music. Here’s to silly, fun, entertaining musicals that stick with you forever!
Yea, I thought Jamie’s lyrics went pretty deep as well. Unusual girl. But I find many of the young people now days to be unusual. I am encouraged by a lot of what I see. I guess that is one reason that I was drawn to Jamie Grace. DA is not alone: there is a small army of youth who are committed to a better world and willing to show up with all they have and are to sing about it (or dance or write or teach or create!). It doesn’t make me miss DA less ( and Thanks! Angelica for changing his name to: David Archuleta in the title per Djas’ kind advice and article. ^_^), but it encourages me that he will be joining with many others of whom we are still unaware, to undertake a fight for pure talent and expression and personal ideals.
I can dig that.
On another note: (heh) my sister called me last night and said how she was thinking of me. Why was she thinking of me, you ask? Because she had purchased DA’s latest CD: Begin., and was loving it. She wanted to know if I had it already (she has been out of town for a bit ((Dear Sister: you have been almost off planet if you did not get my sighing and swooning vibes all the way over at your house!)) and is just catching up after a very busy “family” summer). Her words: “It has some of my very favorite songs on it!” She was excited.
I guess I may have to go over to her place and support her a bit. Family. ^_^

I saw a post about her on another blog I read – under “entertainment news”. I was impressed. I don’t get out much so I thought she might be fairly well known… well by the younger set, at least. My son Joey who sings, knew of her and was excited that I had found her music. I can never get anything past Joey!
Anyway… I read up a bit on her and just thought: DA! You don’t have to do everything alone, there are going to be people who are working on the same things you are and have been working on them while you are gone. Things like: making a mark as who you are instead of who the music industry tells you to be, overcoming challenges and staying true to self, writing music from the heart…. (okay… don’t get me started! I have a passion for the young-soldiers-for-good that I think the world needs right now and I think they are out there, each thinking they may be alone. They are coming just when the world needs them most. And finding ways to get the music to us all. I think DA will find even more ways to be successful when he comes home than he had before. And I believe there are talented folks just bursting out all over bringing …. ((*_*)) …erm. LIke I said: Don’t get me started (^_^) ).
It may be hard when DA gets back. But I believe it will be easier in some ways as well. And I love seeing people like Jamie making a mark, cause it reminds of, and encourages me for, DA.
PS….
(The Other Side of Down is excellent music to listen to while doing one’s taxes. Just sayin’)

This is sort of a ‘sign of the times’, how things end, yet we will always have beautiful memories……I just learned that the Thaifoon restaurant, at the Gateway Mall in SLC, closed on Sept. 30. I’ll never forget Dec. 18, 2010, when so many of us gathered there and met one another, during the unforgettable MOTAB weekend —all of us there because of David!

Just listened to “My Kind of Love” twice and the raw emotion is so powerful. I feel the blood rush to my face and the tears start in my eyes especially toward the end. I never knew of Jamie before thank you for introduced her here, i can see and hear some similarity between David and Jamie like you said, especially in terms of lyricss and vibe…both of them are looking at things positively which in turn lift the spirit of the listener!!

As to answer your question of who remind us of DA? For me I have to say I still can’t find “anyone” that remind me of him!!! but as wierd as it may sound I can find almost in anything that remind me of David…food, music, books, soprts even earthquaks !!! yeah pretty much everything except singers and/or artists!!!

It’s been a while since I’ve commented….real life has taken over and with kids moved out I seem like I have less time! Loving empty nest life….lost 18lbs since May..ran in mud run on Saturday…still listening to DA everyday. Getting my house ready to sell so I can buy a townhouse and have money to travel! I’m 51 years old and have never had a passport!!
I looked back and saw the sad news about dakgirl…I’m so saddened to hear the news…I loved her wit! And will miss her comments and posts!! It’s nice to hear that DA and friends brought her such happiness.

Ha, ha! You make me smile. ^_^ I haven’ had that experience yet. (except when I go to the Thai restaurant!) But music does remind me of lots of things. And… having had three sons serve on missions – well – when each of them were gone there were things that they all did that “reminded” me of the one that was not there. I would never want to “compare” Jamie Grace (or any other singer) to David Archuleta. Not much point in that for me. But some of the things Jamie does… and what she stands for … that does remind me of him. In a very good way.
And it reminds me that he will find friends when he comes home. There will be like-minded individuals out there who are also in the music industry. He will not be alone.
I find that very comforting.

I want to thank Djafan for her last post. I really had gotten away from being random on youtube and since her post, have gone back to my old ways. It is so true the real David needs to be “seen” as well as heard. The only problem is it makes me miss him more.
I was at the Ventura concert and decided to listen to all the concert. So great. One of the lines really struck home with me: in A Silent Christmas by Amy Grant, there is the line, An angelic voice in the chaos and the noise. I have had quite the year, filled with more change and accidents than I could have imagined. David, Always, is that voice for me. I am so thankful for him and for all of you.

Wow!! I REALLY love “The Best I Can”! Has this been posted before? How did I miss it? It’s such a “feel good” song with a little Jason Mraz element to it. Also enjoying “Don’t Run Away”. Think that the music needs to be more polished….seems a bit loud and harsh to me, but the voice and melody is amazing! The anticipation of other vault treasures gives me…..in the words of David……”that tingly feeling”!

just a little story ………..
I went to get a haircut this week and the new guy that cut my hair was a fan of David from Idol days.He said "that was the best season,David A was sooo good, he should have won!' (he had noticed my picture of David, on my iphone)
….he knew about David being on a mission,from news articles but was shocked to find out all David has been doing since "Crush" Well, needless to say,by the time he had finished with my hair, he knew everything and more! LOL and was anxious to catch up. I wished I had a copy of BEGIN with me but didn't,,however he saw all the songs listed on my phone I told him to google David Archuleta,buy his songs on itunes and to follow him on Twitter! and etc. He asked alot of questions and liked hearing about D again! so fun♥
