David Archuleta’s Everybody Hurts Video ~ A Review
Posted by djafan on Thursday, September 6, 2012
At the risk of looking a dead gift horse in the mouth while simultaneously beating him, here is my eleventh hour review of the “Everybody Hurts” video.
I did not comment on the video when it was released. I watched it once with sound, once without sound, and then logged off my computer. Days later I returned to see many praising it, but not all. Among the dissenters was HG’s honest review and Silverfox’s on this site. I gathered from other comments that there was some controversy brewing over the matter but I didn’t go there. I make it a rule to stay away from drama that is not of my own making, for if I create it, I can hardly avoid it. For that reason, I try not to create it. But feigned indifference, my stance of choice on all but the most pressing issues, will not do. I don’t know why it won’t do but it just won’t. I don’t know why the video affected me so strongly but it did. Maybe by writing down my thoughts it will become clearer, at least to me.
I know they were pressed for time. I suspect David probably had very little to do with the making of the video other than laying down the vocals and allowing himself to be filmed doing so. He probably then left, trusting that others would do it justice and, with more important things on his mind, not much caring how it turned out. The music was the thing that mattered, a parting gift for his fans and he worked so hard and put so much love into it.
What does one video matter? It matters because to a fan of David, nothing will ever be good enough for him unless it reaches his level of excellence. In the song, “Everybody Hurts,” he descended emotionally far below anything portrayed on that video. Lyrically the song echoes the words of Henry David Thoreau, “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.” Where in the video was this truth made plain by the lines, “when you feel like giving up…when you feel like letting go…don’t throw your hand!”? Not in a father giving his daughter away in marriage with much joy in store, or childhood friends parting but still keeping in touch by phone and text. And surely the mother in combat was not about to throw her hand or let go of life, so long as she could make it back to her child.
In an afterthought while writing this, I wondered how a video like MJ’s “Stranger in Moscow” would work with David’s cover of “Everybody Hurts.” It was edited hastily and in places is choppy. Since he was singing another song, I removed the frames containing Michael which necessitated some repetition of images and I added something of David. It is only meant to be a rough draft to illustrate the difference between sentimentality and seriously good work. Good enough even, for David.

“What does one video matter?”. It matters much but we have been down this road before. Until such time as David takes complete control and/or hires professional caretakers who will not be satisfied with anything less then the excellence he strives for, we will see opportunities short of what could have been.
Still I go back and listen AND watch for his gorgeousness in the parts where he appears. lol.
Loved your vid and am hopeful for what is possible when he gets back. (Can’t bring myself to even say that year. It’s just too difficult still.)
btw, I have enjoyed Bestor’s and Hancock’s work on this album. Would love David to continue to use this caliber of industry professionals.
And way off topic is how now my focus is on True Colors and the various pronunciations of the word “colors”. I am gut level affected with the way he says it the very first time. Like with a hard “k” sound and way back in his throat or something, idk. Wooo! Still have it bad for this album. 🙂

Angelica,
Thanks for the thought provoking article. I understand what you mean and I really like your version of hte video. I like the part at the end where David sings “hold on” and the rain is falling on them as if to refresh and renew them, to help them continue to try and hold on.
“In the song, “Everybody Hurts,” he descended emotionally far below anything portrayed on that video.” << Same here. As I said on another thread, I felt a disconnect between the song and the video, for that same reason.
The video wasn't what I expected. I liked it, but it didn't fit my interpretation of what the song meant. But, after thinking about it for a while, I began to try to see it from David's prespective rather than my own, about what the song might have meant to him. He was leaving for his mission, hurting because he was about to leave everyone he loved behind, and his family was hurting because he was leaving them. Even his fans were hurting, and this could also be telling us to hold on, that he'll be back and it will be back to business and back to normal soon.
I agree that it wasn't the dramatic video it could have been. And it doesn't represent the song they way I hear it still. But I do understand where they may have been coming from when I think about it from his possible perspective.
I want to add that I too really appreciate all the hard work on David's part to give us music and videos. He worked his little tushy off to give us things to help us through the time he is away.
So, whether we love the video or find it confusing, it is something to enjoy while keeping us engaged and discussing David and his music. I think that's what David wanted us to do when he decided to leave us with all these gifts.
Thanks again, Angelica. I look forward to reading everyone's opinion on this.
Oh! One more thing! (haha I just never stop do I?) Trying to figure it out made me listen to this song many times and made this song (that was not a favorite) become one of my favorites. So in the end, it actually did its job very well.

Angelica, I woke up at 4 am and read your article on my phone while still in bed. I was so excited to see that you had made something new in video. You did such a great job combining the MJ video clips and David’s music. The black and white effect MADE it so dramatic. You have such an eye for what works.
I had a similar reaction when I watched this most anticipated video promoting Everybody Hurts. I could almost forgive the cheese factor of the cut scenes ,if they had remotely told the story of the song. I had a disconnect with the pain and emotion in David’s voice and the level of “pain” represented by the scenarios. He two previous videos had the luxury of time, which this one did not. My wish for future videos is that they let David sing with minimal distraction. He is the star we follow, after all.
My own solution was to rewrite history :). Last week I chopped the clips from all the interviews that Kari released of David talking about BEGIN and some parts of the EH video to make an ALL David tribute.

I agree, Angelica. It wasn’t one of his better ones. I was so caught up in being able to watch David record that I didn’t focus on the quality of the video. The way I see it is like from a parent’s perspective. My child brought home an assignment and instead of his usual grade of A+, he got a B-. I know he is capable of doing so much better but because of extenuating circumstances, that is, too much on his plate, he wasn’t able to give 100% this time. We’re not used to this from David who has always gone above and beyond.
I loved how you combined MJ’s “Stranger In Moscow” video with David’s vocals on “Everybody Hurts”. You nailed the mood of the song by using visuals that depict sorrowful faces showing deep sadness, loneliness and feelings of desperation. That is exactly what the original video is lacking! Muchas Gracias!
Abrra, I love your video, too!
Ram, Good to see you again!!

Wow, it’s not often that I totally disagree with other David fans but this time I do!!! I LOVED this video and it still makes me cry every single time I watch it. I guess some of the scenes just resonated with me. The dad feeling sad about his daughter leaving is so easy for me to understand because my daughter is turning 18 soon and although I know she needs to grow up and eventually leave home, it always chokes me up to think about it. The mom missing her little boy is so close to home for me too because I often feel so bad for my mom and dad being so far away from my children. (They live in South Africa and we are in Louisiana). In spite of the physical distance my children are still very close to their grandparents but I know that often my mom just would love to give them a big hug. When the little boy puts his chubby little hand on his mom’s cheek it reminds me of when my kids were little and that physical closeness we shared. So I have to say that I thought this video was lovely!

Begin.? The best album ever for me. Everything about it was exceptional. The choice of songs, the production, David’s astounding vocals, each song sung with gut wrenching emotions, purpose and truth.
Each time I listen I get transported to the deep recess of my soul and David’s sincerity and Love heals me. Every time. Nobody else can do that!
thank you David for all that love, I am truly grateful.

David Archuleta is back with ‘Begin’
By Samira Shahbandy, George Washington High School
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — After the finale of “American Idol” each season, we often don’t see many of the contestants again. David Archuleta, the season seven runner-up, was one we did see again, though. His song “Crush,” from his self-titled debut album, was a huge hit.
After that, however, he wasn’t in the public eye as much. For many, he was a one-hit wonder.
He’s stayed busy, though. On Aug. 7, Archuleta released his sixth album, “Begin.”
Most of the songs are covers, but they’re beautiful arrangements. Depending on how you’re feeling, they might even make you cry. The songs sound so genuine that they make this album a work of art.
One that is especially good is “Don’t Give Up,” featuring singer/songwriter Libbie Linton. It is so inspirational and incredible. The song, originally by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush, is so lovely that I played it on repeat for hours. It never gets old, and it gives me a little bit of hope to deal with life’s curveballs.
His cover of “Somewhere Only We Know” was hard for me to like at first because it is different from both the original and the version that Lifehouse did. After hearing it a few times, though, it became one of my favorite arrangements of the song. It’s unique and really shows off Archuleta’s vocal abilities.
His cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” has beautiful music to go along with the delightful lyrics. I haven’t heard the original version, so I can’t compare it, but Archuleta’s version is a great song for any mood you may be in.
My least favorite song on the album is his cover of U2’s “Pride (In the Name of Love).” There’s nothing really wrong with it; I just don’t think it suits him, and I don’t care for his arrangement of it.
“Broken” is the one original song on the album, co-written by Archuleta and Jon Hunt. It is a beautiful song with enchanting lyrics and an incredible vocal range. It really shows how far Archuleta has come the past few years.
No matter what age you are, this album may just give you some hope to help get you through hard times. Archuleta has really done well selecting his songs because this album will tug on heartstrings around the world.
Before I listened to “Begin,” I wasn’t sure if it could compare to his debut, but I was wrong. If anything, I think it will be the best liked of his albums. It will keep you thinking of Archuleta and wanting to hear to more of his music for a long time to come.

Angelica – I felt very disappointed with the original version of the video of Everybody Hurts. The vocals are so deep and painful, and at first I thought the man whose daughter was getting married was actually at a funeral LOL. Then, the rest of the video was confusing to me. And the only parts I really liked were of David 🙂
Your version is fantastic (as always – you videographer par excellence!)
One thing about this album is that almost all of it makes me sad. It doesn’t speak to me of hope that much. Don’t Give Up brings me to tears almost every time and for me, is the BEST song on the album, with Broken coming in next. Like Josianna, above, I play Don’t Give Up on repeat because it is so haunting and gorgeous.
Abrra – there’s nothing I like better than watching David, just David and only David. Good job!

Hi all,
Angelica, thanks for another thought provoking article, to be honest I love the official mv. just like Funfee #7, I can relate especially the female soldier part which get me teary everytime!!! I am in the same situation as both the mom and the child…as in.. I live so far away from my mom who is 77 now miss her and at the same time feel guilty for not being there for her and my daughter is in collage away from home.. miss her like crazy!!! but I have a little problem with the wedding scene cause if only the guy’s holding his late wife pic in stead of his baby daughter..like he missing her and wishing she’d be there on this special day with him then I think it would have more impact to audience and I think they put the young couples there to attract …well the youngen, otherwise the vid would be too sad and serious, just my opinion 🙂
I love your vid too, very well edited and the scene fits the song, very artistic with the black and white image and massage of the song hits home 🙂

Angelica, I enjoyed your video and your take on the original one. But I kind of agree with Fenfan that I loved the video from the beginning even though it is more simplistic. But, in life there all kinds of hurt…in different degrees. Therefore the original is fine too. Yes there are things that I would have changed or made a little better here and there, but with it being made in record time, to me it’s fine. I’m just glad David took the time to make the album! The main thing that I didn’t care for the first time I watched it, (which I’ve stated before in another post) was when the little boy and his dad met with the mom, it was like they were entering the war zone and that didn’t look right to me. EH was always one of my favorites on the album so was happy to see it made into a video. For some reason, he seems to pick my favorites to make into videos. Lucky, I guess! I look forward to each song every time I play the album. Each song has it’s own special part or parts that I can’t wait to hear again and again. Hearing David’s voice on the EH video makes me happy!♥ And Abrra, love your video, hearing David’s voice and seeing David’s face makes me happier!♥♥

Angelica,I really enjoyed your review of this video.and the video you put together, visually powerful.you always wake up my brain.
The first time I watched the original video,I was in tears. I was in tears, mainly because of David himself, watching him as he sang in the recording studio, knowing when he was there, and why, just brought forth so much emotion inside of me,as the song began to play. He alone,is such a storyteller,we don’t even need the book.I felt privileged to be there. There is nothing like watching him sing is there? His expressions alone he makes us feel the song, and watching his face at the end, it seems like this song took him to a place where deeper pain was evident, yes.I agree
. you made your video…. “to illustrate the difference between sentimentality and seriously good work.”
if David had been here for the making of the video maybe it would have been a bit different,or a lot different. I love that we have the video, and it’s lovely and I feel it , but I see what you mean about the situations depicted.
sometimes, I think….actually often I think, that there has yet to be in Davids inner circle of management and marketers, videomakers, and countless others over the past few years, anyone who understands the full talent and genius of this guy, or really understands what pulls us to him and keeps us here!

That is a beautiful screencap. As much as I love David in color sometimes the black and white brings attention to details that don’t stand out in color. Angelica created a video, thank you. I’ve been asking for an Angelica video for some time 🙂 It’s beautiful in it’s hurt though it does end with hope, great editing. I get what your saying and others who didn’t feel the lyrics, David’s incredible emotional vocals matched the visual of the MV. I agree 100% that I too didn’t feel the connect but with that being said I do love the video because of the outcome. I had said in a previous comment that it was ironic that those who weren’t satisfied were mostly fans. Reading the comments and sharing the video with non fans has been nothing but positive remarks. My grandkids didn’t know the song and were really taken in with the video. Even my 13 year old grandson who likes alternative and rap was held captive by it. So like Ram said “Until such time as David takes complete control and/or hires professional caretakers who will not be satisfied with anything less then the excellence he strives for, we will see opportunities short of what could have been.” YES, because David is a perfectionist but his persona and genius need to meet and my gut tells me they are getting closer and closer. Broken, his original where he is co writer and musical composer has received the highest praise from most reviewers. Still my favorite 🙂
Ram, it’s so nice to see you ♥
Well I choked and spilled my coffee. “Hey guys, it’s David here” the most beautiful words I have missed so much. ♥

Masterclass Lady’s new article in her David Archuleta Retrospective Series is on “Works For Me”! Here’s an excerpt. Link below.
“Works for Me” is a song released on David’s self-titled album through Wal-Mart as a Bonus Track back in November 2008. This song represents David’s self- image, a time in his life when he felt indecisive and had to deal with certain challenges. He co-wrote this song with Daniel Bedingfield and Toby Lightman.
A call from Daniel Bedingfield to Toby Lightman asking her to come and write with them early one morning back in 2008 started their creative process.
With David barely awake, Daniel downing Chai lattes and Toby with guitar in hand the basics of a song were started but not finished. A call from Sony a month later requesting them to finish the song required them to fly to Tulsa, Oklahoma, David’s last stop on his American Idol Tour. And as they say history was made or at least “Works for Me.
Challenges sometimes create change and….”

Rosanne Simunovic’s Recollections
As I write this article on “Works For Me”, I must confess that this is the first time I actually heard this terrific song. It was Pamela Pikewho suggested this song for review in this David Archuleta Retrospective Series.
Well, what took me so long? I love everything about this number – the catchy rhythmic structure, the contagious melody, the luscious harmonies supplied by David and, of course, the seamless and transparent vocal delivery by David on the solo line.
Once again, David highlighted the easy accessibility of his ringing head voice during the repetitious line: “work out just fine “. His voice sounds so liberated, so flexible and he manages to carry this head voice element throughout his range.
As a result, David’s voice always sounds clear and centered. David never over sings – he sings tastefully, calling on the emotion to dictate how he will phrase his music. There is nothing contrived in this song – just pure, joyous singing, plain and simple.
The simulation of the finger snapping at the beginning of the song set the mood so perfectly. It not only reinforces the catchiness of the tune itself but also reminds us not to take life so seriously. It’s a journey and there will be smooth roads and rocky ones.
Once again, this song is a strong testament to David’s positive, yet ever-evolving nature and his ability to trust in something or someone more powerful than himself.
Bravo David!

Angelica, I love your version of EH. I had been thinking of trying to match up the story part of David’s video with him singing “Things are Gonna Get Better”, which I think suits it better.
To me, EH is so meaningful, especially David’s version. When my son was a young teen, he would cry and ask, “why me”–why did he have to have such hard things to deal with in his life (Asperger’s, depression,etc.). It would help him when I would point out that almost everybody has hard things to deal with, or great losses to bear. He didn’t feel so alone, then. The original video was hard for me to relate to, because if my son is able to marry, it would be one of the happiest days of my life. I would even be happy if he had a close friend or girlfriend who was sad to move away and leave him, rather than having such a hard time having friends in the first place. I think most of us have have losses and sorrows that aren’t resolved like they are are in the video, and David’s heartfelt singing reminds us that we can bear it because we’re not alone.

Life is more tough than not, and it’s okay to acknowledge that. In fact, it’s necessary. A sad song/video is another way of connecting with people, helping to realize we are not alone in our pain. I think that in itself can provide a measure of comfort and healing.

You said: “David’s heartfelt singing reminds us that we can bear it because we’re not alone.”
When he sings “Everybody Hurts”, he makes us believe the lyrics and in the process, he heals us with his voice. I don’t know any other singer who could do this for me. Best wishes to your son.
Re BEGIN, I’m focused on two songs this week:
BOTW with David’s soulful wailing throughout sends shivers up my spine and this: “Sail on Silvergirl sail on by, your time has come to shine all your dreams are on their way…”.
I remember that line from the original Simon and Garfunkel version and although it always stood out to me, I found no need to consume every single syllable as I do now. 🙂
Pride is the other song of this week for me. The funny thing is that I used to skip this song when the album was brand new. Now I put it on repeat. The best parts for me are when David says “…in the Memphis skkkkkyyyyy.” (Sky, he said your name! LOL) And then, when he sings the lyrics “…one man betrayed by a kiss”. The K in kiss…well idek and enough said about that. haha
I would love David to open his first concert back, singing “Pride”!!!

Betsy,
LOL Sorry, first thing I did was laugh when I read your comment above the video haha cuz I woke up with Rainbow in my head.
I put my earbuds in while doing my make up and discovered something I had been missing! In Rainbow, around the 2:40 mark, OMG! his background vocals saying “and ohhhh” then “can’t you seeee”. Gahh, the huskiness in his very low register there is just to die for. Is this what we can expect a few years down the road? More of this?
Take a listen and tell me … is this our David!?!? Or was someone doing his back up vocals? It sure sounds like him. Sorry, this is probably too much writing for two lines, but I am obsessing over his voice right there this morning. I can’t even tell you how many times I have replayed that 5 seconds this morning. (Probably well over a 100. LOL I told you I was obsessing!)
Sooo .. is that actually David? If so, I am in serious trouble a few years down the road.

My ears tell me it is NOT David. The voice is deeper. When David does his own back up singing you can hear the “air” quality that makes his voice so special.

Alright Miss Bubble-Buster! One vote for no. I think it does sound like him.
I need a second opinion, and a third and fourth and a fifth. We need a concensus here. LOL Anyone else willing to weigh?
I sure wish I knew soneone who could answer this qestion for sure. It is going to drive me nuts not knowing. Cuz I can absolutely hear (in my mind LOL) his voice getting huskier as he gets older. I spend time actually contemplating what he will sound like in the future. I know, I know, I need to find something better to fill my time. LOL But … well … you know how it is. It’s that ODD thing. 😀

Angelica; Nicely done on your video. The cat has gotten my tongue lately … not that I don’t have much to say, it’s just where do I begin? I love this album! It is a requirement that jump starts each day and gives me peace no matter what hectic kind of day I’m having. His voice has so many layers that it literally makes me forget how I did not care for some of the songs until he transformed them … it’s what some of you have called his ‘heart voice’ that grabs you and makes you want to never let it go. So I’ve been stuck in that vortex and now coming up for air. I don’t know how he is able to convey so many emotions; angst, tenderness, sadness, yearning, caring, sweetness, strength, peace, hope, … just to name a few. I need to play the whole CD on repeat. That has never happened before with any music that I’ve owned. It seems I can’t ever get enough of hearing that voice … maybe it’s because he is away and I’m missing him a bit much. I don’t know but all I can say is this. I expected to love this album even before it came out but he has surprised me and surpassed way beyond that expectation. As for the music video Everybody Hurts, it wasn’t what I was expecting but for where there is not enough David or for what it lacks in conveying the message of the song fully, it is more than compensated for by how David is able to emote what hits home to each of our hearts. Quite remarkable in how he does that. No wonder it’s hard to create a video that fully satisfies, since his singing ability sets such a high standard of expectations.
Abrra; #21 … Oh my eyes! Merci!
Cchalo; As a parent, I share in your pain, as nothing hurts more than the heartaches of your children. I too take comfort in the healing voice of David … wishing the best for you and your family.
Betsy; #44 … Ahhh! That video is very special to me as that was my first introduction to David thanks to my kids. Can you believe that I looked him up based on just hearing his voice from that duet? Crazy, I know.
MT; #45 … Lol! You broke my repeat revere of BEGIN. as I had to rush to listen to Rainbow but sorry dear MT, but I have to side w/ Abrra … don’t think it’s David at 2:40 but his lower register on Be Still My Soul @ 2:50 makes up for it! And yes, his voice is getting huskier and everything else and more … analysis of it fully will require a thesis in itself, haha!
Poof and Jans; From the previous posts, hugs …

I so love that you are replaying part of a D song over and over because I do it all the time.
So Rainbow – The first part – sounds like D
the second
“Can’t you see” doesn’t sound like his annunciation but sort of like his voice a little.
So I am basically no help here, but my opinion is it isn’t him.
Sorry.
At least you aren’t listening to the above Hannah Freaking Montana video for the 2:36 moment of “I thought soooo, whoooaaa, oooooo 193 times.
Basically you win for listening to an adult song lol.

MT, If I’m not mistaken there’s only one song on “forevermore” that David did background vocal himself I can’t remember what song but I doubt it’s rainbow!!! I had a listen just now too but I don’t think it’s him, sorry 🙂

Blueberry! I had forgotten how you came across David, this is so interesting to me. I love hearing stories about this. We all heard something in his voice that reached us, grabbed on, and hooked us. 🙂
Poco, I have no idea at all how that came to be in my head. I hadn’t thought about it or heard it in a year at least. It’s one of life’s mysteries.

hahahaha This had me ROFL!!
Well, it looks like I am outvoted! haha But whoever it is, it makes a wonderful contrast in that part, the high voice and the lower huskier one. ♥ Doesn’t anyone besides me think it sounds like David? Or am i just losing my tiny little mind this morning?
If anyone out there knows who does the background vocals, please let me know! I may be looking up a Fillipino singer. 🙂

Emme,
Thanks for the tip on Jay Durias. And since David killed the battery in my player this morning, (totally his fault) I spent some time on Youtube checking out Jay and I think you could be right. I didn’t hear his lower register in much of his songs, but in one or two places I could definitely hear a similarity. So maybe?

Thanks for the info. I did look up Jay Durias on Youtube. He has a really nice voice and you’re right, his voice and David’s compliment each other very well. I love that part, love the combination of high and low. As David gets older ,his voice may get deeper and it’s possible it may end up sounding very much like that.
Had a fun time in chat last night! You guys really had me laughing last night. It was a great way to end the day. 🙂

I am glued to my TV over the next few days. The 911 coverage is so very compelling. I am drawn to watch as I try to comprehend the reason for all that happened so long ago. The aftershock on our society and the world, continues to reverberate.

“I Need A Silent Night”, one of favorites from the MKOC Tour! I love the way David’s voice goes up and down the scale with ease. He’s such a joy to watch and listen to. If I dare to watch one of those videos I will never stop!
Gladys,
Thanks for the closeup of “Fa la la la la”!! That’s one of djbell’s videos. Idk how I missed it when she first posted. I guess it’s because we are inundated with so many videos at one time, after a tour. Sometimes it’s hard to keep up. Oh, to have that luxury now….Love how she got a closeup of David’s legs when he danced.
Marlie and Abs,
My comments in chat are in no secret code nor are they written in gibberish. I understand what I’m saying. I just can’t express it in words. Some things are just beyond description. 🙂
