The Compartmentalist vs David Archuleta
Posted by djafan on Saturday, September 1, 2012
Below is an excerpt from an article in the September edition of The New Yorker, by Lizzie Widdicombe entitled, “Teen Titan – The Man Who Made Justin Bieber.” Click on the above link for a fascinating read, the story of how a star was born and the Machiavellian machinations that delivered him into a world of fame, power, and wealth. Well written and informative, it is an education in how things work in the very competitive music industry where marketing is all and art is superfluous. At one point she quotes Universal Music Group CEO, Lucian Grainge, who recently signed a distribution deal with Braun… “We’re not in the art business.”
One afternoon, I sat in on a meeting Braun had in his living room with a potential client, a nineteen-year-old singer named Tori Kelly, and her parents. At eleven, Kelly had appeared on the TV series “America’s Most Talented Kid,” and she’d had a deal with the Geffen label. But her career had stalled.
Braun leaned back on the couch, his hands crossed behind his head. “So what do you guys want to do?” he asked in an antsy tone. “I think you’re a real artist with a real voice. I want to understand what you want so I can help you out.”
Kelly’s mom, wearing pink Capri pants, explained that Kelly had just self-released an album, which was charting on iTunes. Kelly named a few pop acts that she’d like to open for: Beyoncé, Alicia Keyes, Justin Timberlake. “Justin”-meaning Bieber-“would be great.” She said that she’d like to perform with a band and with choreography, “if it fits.”
Braun interrupted: “You’ve been doing this for a while now. What do you think the holdup has been?”
Kelly said, in a small voice, “I think the people we have worked with, they don’t see the full picture. They don’t know what to do with me.”
After a minute, Kelly picked up one of Braun’s guitars and performed a song-the chorus went, “Lavish me with your love.” It sounded a bit like acoustic Lauryn Hill. Braun listened attentively. It was nothing like the R. & B. and dance-oriented pop on his roster.
When Kelly finished, Braun asked, “Are you a fan of Jewel?”
She said, politely, “I’m not super-familiar . . .”
Braun jumped in. “Let me give you the background,” he said. “Jewel tried to get signed, it didn’t work out. She drove to California, and she lived in her car. She was homeless, she played coffee shops. She wrote really amazing songs. Then she sold millions of records.” He explained that in the late nineties, during the height of Jewel’s fame, the charts were dominated by elaborate pop acts like the Backstreet Boys and ‘NSync. “But the biggest female star on the planet was someone who came in with a guitar, real quiet, and people would sit there and just be blown away by these singer-songwriter songs.” He went on, “That is the lane for you. There is a time for that again.”
Kelly was wary. Her father said, “So, like, a Jewel-meets-Fiona Apple-meets-Beyoncé?”
Braun said, “Jewel-meets-Tori Kelly. The Beyoncé thing comes later.” He said that the strategy was a marketing approach, not a musical one. “People compartmentalize things. Kobe needs to be like Jordan. Justin Bieber needs to be like Justin Timberlake. You want to dictate to the public who you want them to compare you to. If I was to market you, I’d want them to call you the next Jewel. Because if another Jewel came out, in today’s music market, people would go crazy. That’s what they’re missing.”
Kelly asked, meekly, “How about just the next Tori Kelly?” ?
One of the things that has always impeded the public’s acceptance of David Archuleta is his refusal to be compartmentalized, to be placed inside a convenient box. He is the whole package who refuses to be packaged. People want the familiar, the no-brainer, the known entity. During AI, he made the media uncomfortable, which was a microcosm of the disconnect felt by many viewers. Who is this guy? To whom can we liken him, thereby giving ourselves permission to like him? I don’t blame Scooter Braun for knowing the public so completely and doing his job so well. The blame lies squarely at the feet of a complacent public’s refusal to admit that, like many of the scantily clad empresses on stage, most of the emperors that strut before them are also wearing no clothes.

Hey Guys! Well, my internet is back (Yayyyy!!) and I’ve finally been able to read all the lovely comments on my article. Sorry I wasn’t able to respond to each of you individually but I do want to thank you for commenting. I’m so glad to hear that Angelica & Fi made out okay in the storm.
Poof, I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. And Jan, I can’t imagine what that would have been like. My heart goes out to you both.
Things went pretty well for me here with the storm but there are still problems in my area. Curfews are in effect due to the rivers and creeks continuing to risie and the flooding is still getting worse. (But don’t worry, it shouldn’t affect me.)
I also have my grandson with me. They live in Plaquemines (not where the high water is, thank God.) They were told they would not have power for at least another month. After days with no power, my grandson (who is 13 and still sleeping, so I’m sneaking online) wanted nothing more than a glass of water with ICE and a cool place to sleep, poor baby. So I may not be online much in the coming days with him here, but I will try to make it to chat if I can. I miss you guys!
Angelica,
Thanks for the article. I don’t know if David will ever fit into a box. I don’t know if he even wants to. But I hope during the time he is gone, the country wakes up and realizes that it’s not just about the flash, but about real talent and music that touches people. I hope they BEGIN. to realize what an incredible gift he is to the music scene.
PS The photo: “An Extraordinary Star” << sooo right!

Thank you, Angelica for your thoughtful and lovely article. Well, perhaps “lovely” is not the right word, but I think maybe it fits. Because to my mind, the theme is: the public likes “lovely” – it is the marketers who need a “niche”. No one knew how to market Jewel; Jewel created her own lane. By doing this she very generously gave the marketers a new lane to use. But they did not come up with it. She did. It is the marketers who are limited, not the public.
Everyone who hears DA (well.. almost everyone!) is touched, moved, encouraged, enlivened and uplifted, (did I mention: entertained!). The marketers cannot yet see how to use DA’s brand to their advantage: that is their job, I do not mean that necessarily as a slam. We all tend to want life a little easy: If there is a Harry Potter, then there is a new, open market for…. If there is a Twilight, then….
Marketers market. That is their talent. And it is an industry.
But what happens is that the public can only follow them so far. We are not limited to “fast food” in our appetites. Brands help industry to grow, no doubt about that. They have their place and I am thankful for many of them. But it is the new guy, the “Jewel”, the DA, who is the real mover and shaker, without whom the marketers would dry up and blow away, buried by the weight of their own name brands and ultimately empty “one size fits all” shirts.
I trust DA and the people who hear him. He and his God will find the way. And there are more DA’s out there (in their own fashion), who are inspired and inspiring to him and to all of us. God bless, DA and God bless you all here at the Voice.

aw,Angelica, really great article! and the article from which your ‘spot on’ last paragraph was derived was a great read.
And oh how I love the tags! “David Archuleta, redefining cool, the phenomenon, the renegade, the riddle, the Voice.”
“During AI, he made the media uncomfortable, which was a microcosm of the disconnect felt by many viewers. Who is this guy? To whom can we liken him, thereby giving ourselves permission to like him?” YES! Exactly Angelica!
“The blame lies squarely at the feet of a complacent public’s refusal to admit that, like many of the scantily clad empresses on stage, most of the emperors that strut before them are also wearing no clothes.”
YES, I just love that, its so true.
*Reading the article,I almost felt sorry for JB.(Almost, but not quite) He has become what someone made him. His life is not his own.Monetarily successful, but money doesn’t buy happiness in the end.No one can rise so quickly and remain there when the talent doesn’t live up to the hype JB doesnt have the pinky of talent Michael Jackson did, and he’s no Elvis. But David, he does How grateful I am that David was’t buying any of that, and that he did not fall prey to doing things differently with his life, with his musical talents.
Bluesky,”I trust DA and the people who hear him. He and his God will find the way”
aww blue, yes he will.♥.No matter what path David chooses, he will be happy.he will blaze a new trail. He is
destined for greatness whatever he does.

Interesting, Angelica. I just don’t ‘get’ marketing. Like Bluesky said, “Marketers market. That is their talent. And it is an industry “. I don’t understand why one of my local radio stations plays a couple of David’s tracks from BEGIN. on their Sunday program, but then nothing during the week. But they play “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper and also Phil Collins. I’ve heard ‘Pride’ recently. They did play “Crush” this morning, but good grief, it’s 4+ years old. I don’t know how it works, probably never will, but I wish there was a way to change it. David is another Jewel. We see it, how come ‘they’ don’t?
Waiting…

Interesting article, Angelica! It reminds me of the part in COS where David is telling us that when his dad took him to LA and they told him he was a good singer but they didn’t know what to do with him. I’m glad that he is following his heart and doing what he thinks is the right way for him. He will be a lasting force this way and not a “flash in the pan”!♥

I agree that David can not be put in a box, artistically. Even he has considered to developing a “sound” for his music. But his ability and his desire to sing over shadows sticking to a particular style. When I reflect on the huge publicity he received when he announced he was leaving his career for 2 years, I realized that was yet another “box” he refused to be stuffed into. David has the talent to sing ANYTHING and do it to perfection. he demonstrated this when he completed his last 2 CD’s in just 2 months. I am happy that he doesn’t have a set style. I like the unpredictably not knowing what he will come up with next.
Thanks for firing up my brain cells, Angelica 🙂

Great, thought-provoking article. Thanks!
If David had gone the route of the teen idol, I would have followed him anyway, but after reading this article from The New Yorker magazine, I’m doubly glad he didn’t let anyone talk him into anything he didn’t want. I can almost imagine the frustration on the part of the record executives when David refused to follow the path they laid out for him. At an early age, he learned to trust his instincts and I trust them too. David knows that he can’t be compartmentalized or labeled. And why should he stick to one genre when he succeeds at all of them?
One of these days David will be heard singing the Paul Anka song,
“(I Did It) My Way”.

Thanks for your comments, all. (MT, Bluesky, Skydancer, Tawna, Jan, Abrra, Bebereader, & Sunny). I really do blame Scooter Braun for the way he operates and others of his kind in the industry; I was using irony when I said the opposite. The more I think and learn about the way the music business works, the more convinced I am that David will prevail. Things are changing and real artists who want to stay true to themselves will do what Skydancer pointed out they have always done: blaze their own trails.
Jan and Poof, my heart goes out to you both. ♥
BTW, cc halo on SD brought to light a piece of info that I had overlooked or forgotten. David knows Tori Kelly. They were both on Star Search. I had seen this recent pic but am so bad with names, it didn’t click while I was working on the article.

Angelica, another great thought-provoking article. It really gives a new perspective on what is “relevant” in the music industry today and makes me admire David’s strength all the more and the choices he has made.
It made me think of two quotes I have heard that could truly apply to our “renegade” David…
“If you walk in the footprints of others, you wont make any of your own.”
“You don’t need to fit in because you were born to stand out.”
And I had to add this one by Robert Frost too…
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
I think it will make all the difference.
Love and hugs to all those who are experiencing loss and pain at this time.

Angelica, very interesting article. Really enjoyable read. I will say one thing about JB, I am so sick of seeing his face everywhere I go.I can’t go into any store today without seeing some product that has his face on it, talk about over exposure. I never would like that for David, but wouldn’t mind having his handsome face show up in mags, etc every once in a while. That really would be so good for his career.
As a fan, I would of liked mainstream success for David because that would assure we would always get music from him because he would have the finanical means to do so…..and that’s not to say that with lesser fame he wouldn’t be able to do music, but it would be more of a struggle for him. As a ODD fan, I just don’t want him to struggle with his (financially) career.

Angelica – excellent article. I saw a reference to that piece on a recent Bob Lefsetz blog. I truly believe that the way David “rebels” against being compartmentalized is what will ultimately make him a legend. He’s not there yet, he hasn’t matured enough yet, and he is smart enough to know that he needs to dig deep and find his own way. Justin Bieber will wake up some day and say, “Who am I?” while David always has and always will wake up and say “This is who I am.” David’s life is an authentic one. He relies on his inner compass to lead him and he rarely (if ever) strays from that direction. His talent will carry him while he learns and grows and discovers/creates his own style. I have no doubt that we will be watching him from our rocking chairs when we are no longer able to go to concerts (Hello, nursing home? Do you have high-speed internet?)

For JB it is unfortunate that David’s fans have to compare him to David. It is at that exact moment of complaining that we distance ourselves from David as he would never have another star as a subject of negative criticisms or ever want another singer even younger be the brunt of our jokes.
No amount of criticisms of the music industry will give us what we want for David. JB knows who he is as well as any other young singer and he has taken nothing away from David. I am not one of JB’s fans but I do respect any young person who has the ambition to work hard at a career.

Sandybeaches, yes, jb does work hard for this career, all stars do, that’s part of the business. He just happens to work hard, but is fortunate enough to be reeping a lot more finanical benefits than other that work just as hard or even harder but aren’t as fortunate. I say again, nothing against him, he knows who he is, I guess, but I still think he is over exposed and frankly, I think, is being used.
As far as comparing him to David, in my book, it’s like comparing apples to oranges.

Steno…wow, loved that video. You were right about tissues! The lyrics were so very fitting for David…
“This Is Not Goodbye”
I can see it in your eyes that you are restless
The time has come for you to leave
It’s so hard to let you go but in this life I know
You have to be who you were made to be
As you step out on the road I’ll say a prayer
So that in my heart you always will be there
[Chorus:]
This is not goodbye
I know we’ll meet again
So let your life begin
‘Cause this is not goodbye
It’s just “I love you” to take with you
Until you’re home again
The stirring in your soul has left you wondering
Should you stay or turn around
Well, just remember that your dreams they are a promise
That you were made to change the world
So don’t let fear stop you now ‘cause
[Chorus]
I know the brightest star above
Was created by the One who loved
More than we’ll ever know
To guide you when you’re lost
What started as a still, small voice
Is raging now and your only choice
Is to follow who you are
So follow who you are ‘cause
This is not goodbye
I know we’ll meet again

Aaaargh! Can I just vent for a moment? I’ve noticed, that for the most part, BEGIN has been getting quite positive reviews from the media…which I think is rather amazing considering the short time they had to complete it and the usual negativity they like to throw at David. I’m not usually one who cares much about the reviews, but when I came across a very negative one in my own hometown paper this weekend (not to mention that I live in David’s home state), it just got to me. There was no missing it, as they used the beautiful cover on the front of the section–to attract attention I’m sure. The critic was very dismissive of the whole album with the exception of Broken and to some extent Don’t give Up (he seemed to be a big fan of Libbie Linton). I know those of us who are fans can be pretty defensive, and I’m usually really good about letting it roll off my back, but it just really annoyed me. It makes me wonder sometimes if these critics actually really listen to the albums…I mean, c’mon, this CD is amazing! I never comment on reviews, but this one really made me want to. Perhaps that is what he was counting on.
On a side note, I find it really interesting that there is such a difference of opinion among the critics regarding the individual songs on the album. One critic will absolutely tear apart one song saying that it pales in comparison to the original and he never should have attempted it, while a different critic will call the very same song “ingenius” or “the best on the album”. And, I really hate it when they talk about a lack of emotion…this is David for Pete’s sake, conveying emotion is what he does best!! I think people are just so used to being hit over the head with the music of today that they mistake it for emotion.
Ok…rant over. Sorry, thanks for letting me get that out! I’m feeling better now. I think I’ll go listen to BEGIN.

Angelica, This is what I’ve been seeing while I scour the net. I don’t know how it came to be but we need to go back to when music was a respected art form. Our young don’t know the difference??? I don’t have any respect for blatant manipulation from people like Scooter and now we find out Ellen did it too. Beiber and Chance so called youtube discoveries were all staged, unbelievable. But what disappoints me the most is that the media and public buy into the hype. I’ve been saying that these so called artists are NAKED like the Emperor! Thank you Angelica for this thought provoking article, I agree with everything you have said.
Kaceyyy, I know. A rant every once in a while feels good 🙂 For the most part they’re all positive but when you see those that say he’s bland, sugary and gives soulless renditions of covers. Bugs me to pieces. I encountered one like this and about half way done writing a comment I stopped to see what he said about the Beiber and I almost choked. Soulful, awkward charm, smooth transition into adulthood with vocals to match, WHAT???!!!! I went back to my comment and told the reviewer to ignore my comment because after reading the Believe review he lost all credibility, crazy.
Steno, thanks for the link. Sigh.
After watching the tribute video I got lost in David videos, randomly just watching and watching. What a remarkable young man. Consistent from day one. David will not compromise who he is for the mighty dollar or fame. Always saying you need to always be yourself or else you loose respect and credibility from those who are most important, those that will allow you to continue performing the “ART” of music, the fans. I don’t know a single artist who has the type of following and love like David, not that I know any other haha. But from reading and by the statements from those like Ray and Kari confirms it.

#22 Kaycee, I enjoyed your rant also!♥ Love seeing David being taken care of! I feel the same way…do not like anyone saying anything against David! I know he’s not perfect, but, come on, he is so talented and then get bashed like that just makes me mad! Like if someone is putting down my own kid! In SLC there is a writer for the paper named Berger. He has some stupid by-line to catch your eye and he never has anything good to say about David. The day after David made his announcement at the Christmas concert, he wrote a bad article pretty much bashing the whole concert. It was almost like he wasn’t even there it was so bias! Grrr is right!!!!
Thanks for all the good articles, posts, videos and pics that is on here for us. You all are so good to us!♥
And hope everyone is have a good holiday….I’m doing my wash so I can go back to work tomorrow. We celebrated yesterday.
As far as bashing JB, I just think he’s had too much, too soon. Like he’s never really had to work for anything and don’t see where he’s that good to recieve it. Like a spoiled brat from some of the news stories I’ve seen. There is no comparison to hear him and David sing the same song…David puts him to shame!!!!!! And then for people to put him down! I don’t get it either. Ok, I guess I got on the same podium…..I’ll shut up….for now! lol Gotta change loads……

Everyone has different views of what they think is good music, with that being said, yes, David’s music is tame for the general public, but to say he is soulless is just wrong. And Broken is, imo, by no means bland. Not liking someones music is one thing, but saying incorrect words like that is just wrong.
In order for these idiots to stop giving these reviews, David has to produce a mindblowing album that will show just what a singing genius he is, imo. He is building his foundation and lets hope that when he returns it is completed and there is nothing but skyscraper in the horizon. lol.

Her name is Kristin and from other site comments it appears that today she enters her first year at college.
I have watched the video many, many times and I don’t know if it makes me feel happy that David is following his heart or sad for all of us who miss him — a little of both I suppose. I do know that I am brought to tears but also am very proud of him.

Gina Orr has a lot of experience. Here some info.

You’re right! How could David have produced any more music in that short of time? I’ve decided to take this rumor with a grain of salt and not get all excited unless we hear word from his official site.
Ready for some “Nandito Ako”tonight?

#39…Dayzee, Yep, I remember when we read the article the next day and we couldn’t believe what he was saying about not looking any thing like a Christmas concert!
#41 Gina Orr seems to be really taking care of our guy! If she’s management, is Kari just his tour manager?
#42 Heidijoy…Glad you reminded DJ about taking down Aug…another month down!!
#43 Bebe, love the Tell Me video! He is such a good actor. And, for some reason I always forget about NA on Tues night. I seem to have a million things going on and when I finally get on here, it’s over!! (like tonight)
And again, I want to thank you all for all your love and support. It means the world to me!♥♥

Try going back to the link and I want you to look at the top of the chat window. Click on the Livestream tab( there are 3 others, but don’t use those) . Try typing something to see if the server “sees” your login.
This is assuming that you even see a chat window. If this fails, clear history and try again. When I have issues I change to a different browser to get in. Problems arise for those who do not have their systems or browsers updated.
Good luck. We have a great time and would love to have you come by.

I had fun last night with you, thanks.
I advanced on my thesis about david, is very hard work. See thousands of jeans, thousands of shirts, some jackets.
Watching so many videos, I’ve noticed that there jeans or shirts that deserve a place in the Hall of Fame. Or at least deserve an entire chapter.
Also I’ve noticed that, with the passage of time the jeans and T-shirts have become tighter. The point is, sometimes I stop my research that such beauty is illegal.
I must say it is a hard work and sacrifice, but someone has to.
(I thank God for being in the right place and time in the year 2008)

You wrote – “Also I’ve noticed that, with the passage of time the jeans and T-shirts have become tighter.” Did they become tighter because our guy grew bigger or did he change to buying them in a smaller size? Please address this very important point in your thesis.
Thanks.

49. Gladys,
jajaha Be sure to keep us updated as to how your thesis is coming along! 😀
50. fen,
hahahahaha Excellent question!
Jan,
I missed it too. I was out of town and by the time I got back everyone was gone. 😦
Thanks for the video, Bebe. The Tell Me video is really moving, and of course the music and David’s voice in that song is just gorgeous. David’s sad face is really heartbreaking. Ohnopurple did a great job fitting the scenes to the lyrics. I loved it.

Had a great time on NA chat last night!
Just for clarity, I wonder if some went to the voiceunplugged room rather than the saragirl channel.
49 gladys – oh, my, there are so many questions to ask and analyze about those jeans. Perhaps you can have a chapter on when those jeans got lower on his hips, too, (think of Mr. Confidence) and photos of all the times he wore a belt with them. Can’t wait for this thesis to be published 😉
50 fenfan – you are an astute adviser. Keep those questions flowing.

MT, JR, Jans and others who missed Nandito Ako chat last night; we missed you. too!
The show usually ends at midnight or within a half an hour after. On most nights, after chatting for two hours, we scoot out of there when the show is over. Saturdays in Unplugged is a later night because it’s a weekend. We had a full house last night with 21 showing up to watch the first week of NA. Buttered popcorn was plentiful. Poco, Pooh and Ray, good to see you there.
Speaking of Unplugged, this video blew the roof off the room when it came on the screen last Saturday night. Those who were there will remember…

Sounds like a great event for charity! Wish I lived closer; I’m on the opposite coast. Great lineup, including Michael Orland!!! The only one missing is the man himself, David. Glad fans are getting together in spite of David’s absence.
Loved the video in #55!

57. Bebe I agree, the event sounds wonderful. Thanks Dja for posting!
great video at 55,
but the video at 54 Bebe posted… sucked me into the vortex, where i started viewing every video of Everything and More I could get my hands on.It’s dangerous in there ! like trying to eat only ONE potato chip out of a newly opened bag, when what you really want to do is stuff your face, turn the bag upside down, and tap for crumbs.

#49 and 50…LOVE IT!!!! Going to be a very interesting thesis, I must say! Those are very important questions that we all need answered!!lol
#54…Everything and More!!! He sure is…and more…and more!!!
#55…Fun video! I take David to work every day. So blessed to have a job where they don’t care.
#56…That really sounds like fun! But I probably won’t be able to go. It’s too far in advance for me to plan to go. If it’s still available after the 1st of the yr, I might be able to swing it. I do know that it’s on my son’s birthday.
