David Archuleta’s Begin – A Dark Theme Keeps Me Here ~ I’ll Be Here DA2014

A dark theme keeps me here,
Though summer blazes in the vireo’s eye.
Who would be half possessed
By his own nakedness?
Waking’s my care —
I’ll make a broken music, or I’ll die.
Ye littles, lie more close!
Make me, O Lord, a last, a simple thing
Time cannot overwhelm.
Once I transcended time:
A bud broke to a rose,
And I rose from a last diminishing.
I look down the far light
And I behold the dark side of a tree
Far down a billowing plain,
And when I look again,
It’s lost upon the night —
Night I embrace, a dear proximity
I stand by a low fire
Counting the wisps of flame, and I watch how
Light shifts upon the wall.
I bid stillness be still.
I see, in evening air,
How slowly dark comes down on what we do.
In Evening Air
Theodore Roethke (1908-63)

A dark theme permeates David Archuleta’s new album, Begin., despite an interview with Deseret Book, in which he describes it as “easy listening.” To paraphrase a quote by novelist, Wallace Stegner, “Hard writing makes easy reading.” Begin. is to easy listening as hard writing is to easy reading. It is easy to listen to only because of all the hard work and talent that went into it. On this his fifth album his voice, including backup vocals which, as usual, are all him, never sounded better.
Yet conceptually, this is no easy listening album. Distilled into ten songs, one co-written by him and arguably the saddest, he takes on war, genocide, grief, murder, martyrdom, addiction, loneliness, desolation, despair, shame, low self-esteem, depression, bullying, suicide, poverty, homelessness, brutality, corruption and child abuse. That is a ponderous weight of sorrow contained in one brief body of work. Yet it is not, I think, so much a reflection of the darkness within himself, (though for a serious artist, this is essential) as a stubborn refusal to turn away from the harsher realities of life. Begin. is ultimately and overwhelmingly a message of hope.
David has repeatedly stated in interviews and in a video to his fans that these songs are clues to help them understand why he made the decision to go on a mission. He echoes this again in the liner notes: “Some people may not understand why I have made the decisions I have chosen to make, but that is the reason why I made this album…It really comes from my heart and I did my best to help you all know where I am coming from on my mission decision. While I can’t always [say] what I want to say using words, I hope that these songs will help you know.” David Archuleta
David sings of the lost and now he has gone to seek for them. Not as David Archuleta, the celebrity but as a humble servant of God who, in the name of love has sacrificed his all for what he believes: that we are all broke, flawed, imperfect, but we are not broken beyond repair.
We have only to Begin.

A fine article that gives great distinction and reward to an album sung by David that will outlast most albums of its’ time.
“Don’t Give Up” is absolutely outstanding and the words “So many men. So many men no one needs” speaks of worldwide oppression and portrays a very sad thought each time I hear it.
Love the pictures and the new look brought on by the BEGIN colors.

David has tended to his fans for the last four years and now it is time for him to tend to his mission . This will make him a stonger individual and he will find that he himself is not broke but filled with emtion and joy and we all know. Now it is time for him to incorporate that into his being! This album is emotional and inspiring. Now it is our and David’s time to “Begin”. Thank you for your words!

Thank you, Angelica. I agree one hundred percent.
I see DA (because of his decisions) as reaching vertically down, to deepen and broaden his base, to enlarge the place from which he projects his voice and song out into the world. It is his genius that he speaks so very many languages. Yeah, slow with speech perhaps… but don’t let him open his mouth in song unless you are willing to be inundated with coruscations of light, glimpses of passageways we either dare not travel because of their depth or dread to climb, fearing emptiness where we long for joy.
He may not know those paths any better than we do. His is however, beyond willing to open the door and pass through them; carried as he is on the wings of trust and faith, believing in sight beyond sight, and in the Heart of all healing hearts.

I so agree with that. It is not a reflecton of the darkness within himself, but a way of helping the world open their eyes to the sadness, tragedy, and need of the world, something many turn a blind eye to because it’s easier not too look. And his way of telling us that he DOES see it and that’s why he feels a need to do his part to help.

From the first time I heard snippets of Broken, I knew it was about the children (in war) and their loss of more than just innocence. Life as they knew it, in the safety of parents love, no longer exists for them.
I don’t understand why they are gone
Or what reason there is to be strong
I still try to love, but I’m in a place
Where doing what’s right is so wrong
But if you see , ignore the gun
We are still fighting for life
Here’s our wish just to exist
In more than our eyes
Imagine the compassion it takes to comfort a child who has realized his worst fear, come true?
Yes these songs touch the dark side, but only long enough to spin around towards the light. And hope. David has exposed his raw emotions in the theme of this album. This time he has caught the attention of more than fans. It’s charting numbers show that many more are ready to listen to his heart.
Thank you, Angelica, for this beautifully written review of BEGIN.

I find truth in every single word you wrote. David doesn’t think of music just as something that seems fun to him. On the contrary, he thinks of music as a tool to help others that need help and understanding from someone else. Thanks for writing this. I already loved Broken and I had noticed some of the meaning this song had but your analysis made me see more than what I had noticed. We’re “broke but not broken” .

I agree with everyone who commented on Angelica’s article. I’m not going to expound on what has already been expressed so beautifully but just tell a short story. As my 8 year old grandson was listening to David’s “Begin” album as we were riding in the car (and he knows David’s music well because we listen to it often) he said, “this David music makes me sad Grandma.” I looked back and he was just staring out the window listening to “Beautiful”. I wonder what he was thinking about. So you see David Archuleta touches the young and the old and all those in between. I hope this album climbs as high on the charts as it can go while David is gone. Wouldn’t that just be the beautiful?!

Angelica, what a great synopsis on David’s album “Broken.” You always seem to be able to put into words what I think, but can’t get it out right. “Distilled into ten songs, one co-written by him and arguably the saddest, he takes on war, genocide, grief, murder, martyrdom, addiction, loneliness, desolation, despair, shame, low self-esteem, depression, bullying, suicide, poverty, homelessness, brutality, corruption and child abuse.” So well put. Little David seems to shoulder the troubles of the world. Like Randy said on AI after David sang Imagine, I think it was, “that was brilliant”. That is so David…brilliant!!

Angelica, you have put into words for us what we all were thinking, but didn’t know we were thinking. Thank you so much for making this clear. Now, when I talk to someone who doesn’t “get” David, I have a way to tell them. I think he’s been trying to tell us this all along. When Simon criticized him for singing a gloomy song after he sang Another Day in Paradise, he said he was trying to get people to focus on homelessness. Even then, he was trying to teach us about compassion for others and the plight of the needy. What an amazing human being.

Beautiful article Angelica! Thank you!
It’s taken some time for me to get all caught up. I’ve been in gorgeous upper Michigan where internet connection was a hit-or-miss for me!
Funny story…I had pre-ordered my begin CD from Walmart, having it sent to my address up north. On August 7th I watched the mail gal cruise by slowly looking at houses as she passed by. I didn’t know why until the next day. On that day I stood outside to catch her. I just knew my Begin CD was in her hands! She slowed to talk to me and asked me if I knew who lived there because she hadn’t delivered mail there in a long time and the address was incorrect. I could SEE it in her hand, right there, with MY name on it!!! GAH! I told her my name and said that’s my new David Archuleta CD! She got a big smile on her face and said, “OH, I LOVE his singing!” I said me too! I so wanted to tell her all about what he’s been up to. She was quite understandably busy! My plan when I return this week is to catch her again and give her a CD of Begin for her own listening pleasure!
The story continues…I tried to play that little green gem in the player in the garage. Hmmm. Not working. Then I tried the player in the house. It’s a 5 CD one, so I’m thinking, I’m golden. Well, that dang machine ATE MY CD! I was absolutely determined to get that baby out of there. LOL! I preceeded to seek-out a small phillips screwdriver and take about 20 screws out. There were 3 parts inside that had to be taken out individually and alas! Victory! There it was laying straight-up on it’s side. I gently maneuvered him out of that dark, lonely place! Ha! Ha! Putting that hungry machine back together wasn’t that tough. I had strategically placed each screw, by part, on the floor next to me and in the order I had started the dissection…Once put together I tested with another CD. I think it was Celine Dion. It didn’t eat that one. Go figure. But, I still didn’t trust that hungry machine. I did not pop that green baby back in there. OK. No more players available. What do I do? Dummy me. You have a laptop with media player! GAH! Head back to where it’s at and get myself a cup of coffee with a little Bailey’s in it and break-out the earbuds! Needless to say, I listened to David and his heart over and over again. I can’t thank him enough. This is such a fantastic album. I’m as excited as ever for David and his future!
I can’t tell you all here how much I appreciate this site, it’s commenters and all the other David fansites who are keeping me up-to-date! It’s most comforting to know you are here. 🙂

Beautifully said Angelica, just thank you.
His buoyant public persona is in striking contrast to the realities dealt with on this album – and a big surprise, I imagine, for those who considered him naive and/or too sanguine. But those who follow him closely understand his perspective – an eternal optimism, hope – comes not from ignorance or denial, but from faith.
bluesky, “but don’t let him open his mouth in song unless you are willing to be inundated with coruscations of light, glimpses of passageways we either dare not travel because of their depth or dread to climb, fearing emptiness where we long for joy.”
bebe…”In BEGIN., David takes us to the dark side of life that isn’t always pretty but he only leaves us there long enough to expose the truth. Then, in his gentle care and with the sound of his voice, he heals us.”….this is so, so perfectly said ♥

MT – I also wanted to add my story of my player not wanting to give back David’s cd. I put in in my sound theater system to hear David in all his glory and it did its part extremely well. However when it was time to eject – I swear the player refused to budge with me pressing the button a couple times. Finally I had to shut everything down to reset and started talking to the player that – I know David’s good and I understand how you feel but I need him back too LOL! Its uncanny yet so funny. There’s something going on with that cd……hmmm.

I am beginning to think there is something about the manufacture of the disc that is causing it to get stuck. I wonder if it heats up from continuous play and “expands” in the slot.
I have an older Bose radio/CD player that allows me to drop in the CD and close the lid. It can’t get caught.

Message from Crush Kids’ Cancer team captain PecanPie!
Greetings Fellow Archies and Cancer Warriors! It’s that time again when SU2C has asked us to STAND UP and fight by raising as much funds as we can by AUGUST 29 (less than 2 weeks!). The top fundraising team will receive on-screen recognition (possibly a tribute) on the live broadcast the following week.
With our esteemed honoree abroad for the next 2 years, this will be our toughest challenge yet. Unfortunately, there are quite a few of our team members who are either battling this disease themselves or fighting the battle alongside a loved one right now because cancer doesn’t wait until it’s convenient to wage its war.
So, with or without David to guide us, it’s time to don the boxing gloves. That’s ok, though, because we Don’t Give Up and we will not be Broken! So let’s show cancer and show the world our True Colors and let the fundraising BEGIN.
http://www.standup2cancer.org/custom/?c=team&a=index&id=1917
Please follow the fansites and the kidschapter http://www.thekidschapter.org/ during the week for some uber-cool raffle items you could win by donating!

Angelica,
I read your article when it first came out and I am always struck by how you come up with unexpected but totally apt imagery and poems or quotes from writers unknown to me, yet they speak with a depth that reveals your own. You have a beautiful connection with David and with those who read your words. I love the picture above by Annie, the brooding face of David from the Forevermore shoot. Another well-written and superb article.
I agree with you that the songs of Begin have a dark theme but are ultimately and overwhelmingly hopeful. But more than that, I feel more than ever that specific songs in this album reiterate what David has written in TOSOD, particularly in Who I AM, about
something we rarely discuss because it is difficult to accept as devoted fans. It is hard enough for us that he left for two years
to serve a mission. When I do my chores at home, when I dose off to sleep, I listen to Begin. And I get tearful many times because I feel my heart breaking in several places for him. What he cannot say to us directly he chose to sing thru songs written by other artists but which speak of personal and universal truths which we go through during many phases of our lives.
Somewhere Only We Know. Everybody Hurts. Don’t Give Up. Whenever I listen to these songs, they reveal more of what I think is personal to David and what he wants to tell us about why he wants to have a two-year hiatus from being a celebrity.
Beautiful. True Colors. Bridge Over Troubled Water. Angel. These reveal many facets of David’s compassionate nature which is the primary motivating force in all that he does.
Pride, In the Name of Love. Be Still My Soul. References to his faith in two extreme musical genres. BSMS has a very soul-stirring violin and piano arrangement in the latter half of the song which is very noteworthy. David’s vocals… gaaahh!
Broken. If there is one word I can think of to describe this song, this mastery in telling a story in more than just words, in the music and arrangement which has brought me to a whole new level of experiencing real angst, it is soul-searing. This song which David brought majestically to powerful life thru music and his singing is the most moving recorded song he has done by far. Ahhh, the song slays me to pieces. Want to say more but I’m already occupying so much comment space, lol!

Some don’t like Pride this one does. It comes down to individual taste. Broken a solid contribution…really love that.
“Naturally he’s confident and convincing on “Broken,” his solid original contribution to the collection, but Archuleta is almost shockingly effective on his rendition of U2’s “Pride (In the Name of Love),” which is glossier than the band’s version, but a suitable blend of earnestness and humility.”

Angelica–you little stinker–you did it again. Read your article earlier and all the responses–Once again I am at a loss for words!! I guess David and I are kind of alike in that way. I can’t always express myself in words ( as so many here can)–and I sure can’t sing–so I guess I’m stuck.
But I can say your article is wonderful and you are a beautiful writer!!
I love it here.;)
♪♪ ♥ These are words I want to say, every hour of every day– to say how good it feels to be here with you ( all) today ♪♪♥
Yesterday , I watched as two neatly dressed young men walked past my house–white shirts and tie– wearing backpacks,
and to my complete surprise–I immediately burst into tears. I think partly because they reminded me of David–but mostly ( in my minds eye, I guess ) they just looked so alone. 😦 It struck me that , they too are away from the familiar—family and friends. Good thing they didn’t stop at my house–I couldn’t have talked to them, without more tears.

Bebe & Sky, thanks for the complimentary responses. I really, really love Broken, even if it makes me break down in tears EVERY time I listen to it. I wonder if Invisible Children Inc. knows about it and has any plans of using the song. It will be an amazingly effective medium for spreading the message of their cause. Those who have written brief critiques and just glossed over it might not even understand what it is all about, unlike us ‘enlightened’ and ‘knowing’ followers of David.
Emme, thank you, too. I also love what you wrote which is posted on the upper left side bar. I don’t know why some of these so-called music reviewers write that they don’t hear enough soul in David’s singing. Why do we hear and feel LOADS of it and they don’t? Baffles me no end.
Dak, I believe you CAN express yourself in words. I, too was touched by your reaction to the two young men. It reminded me of the time my hubby and I drove by the iconic LDS temple in a very nice village in the metropolis one morning more than two weeks ago. I noticed that there was ongoing construction of a sprawling compound of low-rise buildings across the road from it which was also situated beside a quaint village retail row of mid to high-end shops. Wondering what it was, I searched for a signboard, then realized it was the Philippine Mission Training Center of the LDS. Oh my gosh, Naturally, I thought about David and all the other missionaries, of how their church really takes good care of their volunteers. It was a very comforting thought, but all the same it couldn’t prevent me from missing him so much that I was trying so hard to suppress my tears. Never before in my professional life (of working on buildings) has seeing a construction site made me teary-eyed. (Did I say that right?)

Dak!!! Awww I know what you mean. I like at all those young men differently because of David. I’ve always admired anyone who makes those types of sacrifices to serve but now my heart goes out to them, I want to offer them food, water, a chair to rest, an extra pair of shoes lol.
A video today? Yes please.

Dakgal, living in SLC I see missionaries almost daily. It used to make me smile to see these earnest young men wearing ties and nameplates, but now I find I have to restrain myself from running over and giving them hugs and cookies.

#58 – Bebe, I love the video. You’re right, we need kleenex. I couldn’t stop crying as I watched it last night. My son saw me and thought I was crying about his grades so he tried to console me and gave me a big hug. LOL!
#70 – Dak, nowadays I feel totally different seeing missionaries at work. Not that I didn’t respect them before as I have always shown respect to anyone who tries to spread the word of the Lord no matter what religion they are associated with, but I didn’t really see the magnitude of the sacrifices they do, not until David left for his mission. I have a lot, lot more respect for all of them now. I could only imagine David coming to my door and giving him a big, tight hug.
#75 – Angelica – YES! I can’t wait to see the music video.

So beautifully done — feeling so many emotions now — David’s amazing voice and the story-telling. Praying that David is still well and happy with what he has chosen to do with his life for the next while. Take care David and thank you for all you have left for us to enjoy in your absence.
