My Visit to Rancagua

All the memories of July 15th are spinning in my head. I want to share the events of that day as best as I can. As the saying goes, the 15th of July was the first day of the rest of my life. That is how important I consider the first time I saw David in all his greatness.

I’m so grateful that two marvelous people sent me the information about the Devotional almost at the same time. (Sending a big kiss to Abrra and Dja.)

I arrived at work and opened my emails to see if there are any pictures or David news. When I saw the flyer I screamed and put my hands over my mouth. When I was finally able to speak, the only thing I said was “I’m going to Chile”. When there is an important thing in my life, the first thing I do is call my sisters. They all work together along with my niece Elaine. I told them I’m going to Chile. They know of my love for David, they put me on speaker phone and I told them all about the devotional, of the Mormons and the religious songs. My sisters know how insane I am when I speak of my favorite subject. I heard my niece in the background saying she’ll go with me!!!!! I’ll go to Chile with you!!!!! My sister Mary volunteered to look into flights, my niece into hotels and that is how this adventure began. I had mentioned before that I had started a savings for seeing David in 2014 at his welcome concert so I was OK with funds. I had to make sure the event was open to me also, so I called the representative in my country. They gave me the Chile contact information. This devotional is an experimental pilot, the first of its kind. My niece made all the arrangements thanks to the blessed internet.

The day of departure arrived! I had never been in an airport; it was my first time flying. It was a cold morning but by the time we boarded the sun was out. On Saturday July 14th at 14:25 hours we took off. We crossed the Andes and I remembered a picture Abrra made me, David with a book in his hand on one side and me on the other, a premonition? Haha

We landed and were taken to the hotel; everything went smoothly, no problems. The hotel room was a complete apartment, very comfortable. There were Brazilians, Peruvians, Colombians and Americans visiting Chile. We had dinner and made arrangements for the trip to Rancagua. I wanted to be there early, by noon. At the hotel they informed us that we needed to go by bus and to let the driver know where we wanted to get off. I had the address memorized, Grecia 319, Centro Jas De Rancagua. I was yet to feel nervous. Sunday I woke up at 9am because I had been at The Voice Unplugged chat the night before pretty late. But I needed to talk to them for emotional support.

A taxi took us to board the bus and I slept the hour long trip and awoke as the driver was telling us we had arrived. We walked through a farmers market and asked if we were on course and we were. We finally arrived and took a picture. It was a very large place with many halls and rooms for events. We entered and an American spoke to us in Spanish with a heavy accent, he said “Make yourself at home”. The devotional was due to start at 6pm and we were there by 3:30pm, pretty early. I saw a large white car with many seats; I jokingly told my niece that David arrived in it. While inside I was looking at the posters and suddenly my niece screamed and covered her mouth. I saw someone walk quickly to the hall and I looked at her (she says she’s not a fan hahaha) and she said, “It was David!!!!!!!” I looked in and saw someone in a black suit wearing a backpack, black hair and glowy skin.  I knew it was him when I saw his profile!  He was looking around; I stood without moving a single muscle. Then an Elder invited us to come in and we sat in the second row. It was us and the Elders. We introduced ourselves and told them we were from Argentina. We said that in Argentina they didn’t have many devotionals and were invited to Chile (I ask God for forgiveness, there was never a devotional, forgive me God) I asked if we could stay there. They said yes, we were welcome to stay. Suddenly David was there again, speaking to the choir, he went to the pulpit and said something in Spanish and they answered in Spanish. He went to the back of the hall and I was dying to watch him but it would be too obvious. It was 4:30pm and we were told we had to step out while the choir practiced. I said we were from Argentina and she spoke with an American and she let her know that we’d been there since early and we were allowed to reserve seats in the third or fourth row. We wrote our names on sheets of paper and reserved seats on the fourth row in front of the pulpit. We were told to be back before 6pm to go to our reserved seats. We stepped out and hung around looking toward the hall. The door had a window and I looked in and saw David, he was setting up chairs. He looked serious. We went to eat and walk around some. I have to say that this wasn’t the nice part of Rancagua, there wasn’t much around. We went back and walked around the gardens. There was a woman there waiting like us. It was cool so we went to wait in the hallway. I stood standing hoping to get a glimpse of David again. As I was standing I realized who were fans, who were Mormons and who were Mormon fans. Some asked me where I was from, some of the Elders said they had served in my country and we started chatting. Almost everyone spoke English. The older Elders were American and only a few spoke Spanish. I recognized some of the Elders that I’ve seen in pictures with David. I didn’t anticipate so many wearing skirts, I was wearing pants but I was wearing my violet blazer.

While waiting I heard stories of the interest in David by those of his faith. For example one of the Mormon girls was there the day before during the choir practice and was told to leave because the practices were private. Another one pretending to need the bathroom was trying to get a glimpse, she was a fan. She was taking pictures through a window. She started fanning herself and said she saw David. Her friend and an Elder took her out for some fresh air so she could calm down. Then the hallways started filling up and there were two lines being formed outside the doors. There were two Elder sitting at the entrance not letting anyone in.

The Wait Was Over

The moment that I waited for 4 years was about to BEGIN. Finally the doors opened and everyone rushed in, luckily they respected the reserved seats. My niece and I went to our seats. I have to say that all the seats filled and many were standing behind the seats. They asked for silence because the show was about to start, it was almost 6:30. There wasn’t much silence. Another Elder explained about the devotional, the theme and development, and asked for no video nor screaming or applause. The girls’ choir wore red blouses. They sat towards the back. The Elders without David came in and all got situated. There were three chairs by the pulpit, two were occupied, and one wasn’t. Then David quietly made his way behind everyone on stage and sat on the empty chair. We could barely see him.

The presenting Elder named all in the choir, one at a time they stood and smiled. When it was David’s turn he stood and looked at everyone and smiled. I could hear someone saying, “There he is! There he is! There is David!” He didn’t notice the signal to sit and stood standing smiling until someone next to him touched his arm signaling him to sit. The presenter spoke of the Rancagua President. I don’t remember if they said he had 10 children or someone else did, this created some laughter. David turned to his neighbor asking and also laughed. The dissertation began and the principal orator commented that it seemed like it was his funeral because of all the nice things that were being said about him. Everyone laughed including David.

The devotional started. There were some history telling, the choir and soloists. They started playing the piano, they continued the performances. I’ll try to focus my mind in that moment. David rose and sat in the empty chair. I could see only part of his face as he kept looking down. Those with better seats could see him. He kept looking down reading from the hymn book and seldom looked up.

The Miracle

Suddenly David was behind the pulpit, with hymnal book in hand and he began to sing….in Spanish…. A very soft and slow song. I could see all his expressions. His eyebrows arched, he closed his eyes. His concentration was such that it seemed like he went to another place and when he opened his eyes he was still away. I was in a trance absorbing every second. At some point I forgot to breathe, everything was quiet. When he finished singing he closed the hymn book and sat down. Then others performed and David returned. The second song was more intense, just as beautiful. When David sang there was absolute silence. Everyone wanted to hear The Voice. I have to honestly say everyone was there to hear David.

During the third song the piano failed. He looked to see if it was fixed and turned to face the audience and sang. His voice in that song gave me the chills. Oh My God!!!! It was a beautiful song with so much emotion. He kept his eyes closed the entire time and when he opened them he smiled and sat down. At one time he dropped his book and was bent down looking for it. The other acts performed. During David’s fourth song he looked at the audience, smiled and began to sing. His voice elevated and he sang with all his soul. When he finished no one was breathing, he closed his book of hymns and stood standing in front of the pulpit, I almost fainted. I thought he was going to speak to us in Spanish. He took a deep breath and looked at the pianist, opened his book and sang the fifth song. The previous songs were beautiful but this last one was worth all my efforts, the expense, the entire trip. If David had only sang this one song I would have been equally satisfied. His voice filled the entire place. David’s face has so many nuances; so many sensations cross his face and you can tell he loves music with all his soul. But I also noticed that he loves his religion and God. He wants to pay tribute as much as he can. I saw him so focused and dedicated.

The Chaos

The devotional lasted about two hours. No sooner than they said the final words, they whisked David out. I stayed seated for a while trying to absorb all that had happened. My niece said we should go. We were leaving when there was a commotion at the back of the hall; there is only one person that could create that. I told my niece take out your camera and start recording. Just like I imagined, the Elders were like soccer players, side by side to say hello. David was at the end of the line. Everyone was all over David; there was an older elder at each of his side. The people had their cameras out and he just smiled, a little nervous because of the situation. I said hello to some of the Elders, gave them thanks. And honestly, I skipped several to get to David. He’s about my height, light skin, dark hair, green eyes and a very special glow. It was unreal to be standing before him and seeing him smile. I was about to speak English to him and say “Hi David, I’m… but I noticed everyone was speaking Spanish to him and no one said David. So I said, Hola, soy Gladys de Argentina, he said, Ohhh gracias por venir. I continued standing there, I didn’t want to leave, so I extended my hand and took his, I put my other hand on top of his and looked him in the eyes and said thank you, he smiled and I left. I think my niece recorded it. She also said hi, I think she’s a fan now, she was so happy to see him in person.

Afterwards everyone was excited, girls screaming “I touched him! I touched him!” He continued saying hello and the cameras continued to roll. He was then taken away. I stayed in the hall breathing the same air David did but it was late.

The Return

There were no buses going to Santiago. We made arrangements for a taxi with another family of four. The ride back was a little tight. We arrived at the hotel and rested for a bit. Went out to dinner and then met up with you all in The Voice Chat to share all about seeing David. I was and am so happy that I wanted to share this with all of you who understand and I would have loved to have you all there with me.

Maybe someone has the events differently, maybe there were 6 songs, maybe it was all a dream, maybe it was a dream that became reality.

It God allows it I’ll be in Chile again on October 13th. Only two Elders will be singing, Archuleta and Coello. I hope it’s a public event, not a private one like rumored. Guess who I want to go see?

I hope you like all that I wrote. Thank you girls.

Mi Visita A Rancagua

Yo todavía no estaba nerviosa.

Gracias chicas.

Awww Gladys, I loved your recap. Except for actually hearing David sing, I felt like I was right there with you! If I closed my eyes, I could see him getting him into those songs that he loves to sing. You’re right, to hear David sing those songs in Spanish is absolutely priceless!♥♥ So glad to be part of the voice to be able to share this memorable part of your life with you. So happy for you, you so deserve it in all it’s glory!
And thanks to dj for the translations…great job!

Gladys, so pleased to see that David was possibly a big part of the first devotional and without a doubt the focus of the singing was on him. Truly a lovely event that will possibly be the first of many in Chile. They are kindly giving David the opportunity to share his beautiful voice with the people there.

It was also an event that has led to the lifting of a ban that was placed on reporting about David during his private time with his missionary work.

    Thank you Gladys!

“David’s face has so many nuances; so many sensations cross his face and you can tell he loves music with all his soul. But I also noticed that he loves his religion and God. He wants to pay tribute as much as he can. I saw him so focused and dedicated.”
He will put all hes got into these 2 years as a missionary, because that is how he does everything. He has got to be one of the most disiplined people I have ever seen♥

Can someone tell me why this is acceptable when David asked us to leave him alone and respect his privacy while on his mission? Sounds like every other concert recap I’ve ever read. He said before he left “I can’t take you with me.” Don’t give me that junk about it being public and on the internet. FANS traveled to Chile to see him on his mission. At one time, those who thought it was OK to look at blogs and stuff still thought that should be unacceptable. But now this? Call me confused.

Hola Gladys, what a wonderful experience you had there and thanks for sharing, Djafan thank you so much for the translation :).

Cora , hi…in my humble opinion no one invaded David’s privacy, this is Gladys’s story not David’s and she just shared HER experience with us who call ourseves as “friends” , the same thing as all those missionaries who wrote about David in their blogs to their families and friends… I don’t think that’s called invade someone’s privacy… they simply refered to /talk about someone they know but it so happened that someone is “David Archuleta”!!. I think it is inevitable or impossible not to talk about David encounter (at all), he’s someone we know…someone we count as “a friend or family..even!”, though Gladys flew from Agentina to see him, she and her niece showed porper manners-beheavior whatever you call it, no fangirling on their part there, they just went there.. showed their support and admirations toward him as an elder.

I’m not sure if you read her recap or not but here she said “I had to make sure the event was open to me also, so I called the representative in my country. They gave me the Chile contact information. This devotional is an experimental pilot, the first of its kind.” so if it’s restricted to just the local the rep shouldn’t give her the contact information in the first place, and there’er flyers posters ect. so ummm public!!!, and if anything I think the devotional experimental pilot was a success since it’s a full house the messages were delivered far and wide and I’m sure it has something to do with David’s presence just a little…may be.

“Define privacy”, but then what do I know. Peace 🙂

Not sure if this is true, but I read over in comments at FOD that David will not only be singing at a devotional in October but also on the Temple grounds in December…Christmas hymns FTW!!! I can see this happening because David is known for his Christmas music. Here in Arizona and also in SLC they have performances every night for days before Christmas on the Temple grounds. All the “firsts” like flying in a plane, hearing David sing all songs in Spanish, and meeting him to thank him in person have become part of your personal history. To some this might not sound like a big deal. To those who love you like a sister, it is a true miracle. I have known you for about 3 years online. In fairness and understanding to Cora and ever other fan of David’s, there was a time when we were given tight restrictions on what we could post about David. His mission work was off limits on the sites. If we brought a picture, it could not be posted and that was up until his public appearance. Stories could not be printed . The word ‘respect’ was handed out and duly noted.

Obviously the rules have changed without actual notification and as the months go by, David is once again on a poster for a public occasion which is all fine, well and in keeping with his mission work as he continues.

It might not seem so obvious if it had not been of big concern in the beginning. We can’t change the rules on the sites without some confusion to the readers.

It is definitely a near impossibility to have such a tremendous talent kept quiet for so long. So it was four months and as the months go by we may very well see his public appearances more often for everyone’s enjoyment in some way.

Like Cora, I remember when the word ‘privacy’
meant we could write the words ‘Elder Archuleta’ and that was it anything else was turned away.

It is a gift now that there will be public appearances in the future followed by pictures and newspaper articles. We have always known the power of David’s music.

My interpretation of David’s statement about why he is doing this mission is that he wonders what he, personally, has to contribute. Why me? What do can I do that’s worthwhile as a missionary? What is it that I need to do? I have had some leadership positions in my church and wondered what do I have to contribute? Why me and not someone else who has more experience or leadership skills? But as I fulfill my new responsibility I become aware of my talents and realize why I am there. David seems to alway be asking, ” why me?” Why did I make it to second place on AI? Why do fans stay with me for as long as they have? Etc.

Mr. David Archuleta remains at the top of the rankings. Sure, he has the number one spot, but we can’t forget about Ms. Sanchez. She is only a couple hundred points away from snatching that spot up again. I mean, it wouldn’t be an Ology first if the second place person ended up winning it all. It has happened before.. and hey! Could happen again.

So far it has only been a contest between Archie and Sanchez. They have some pretty big fan support. That being said, anything can happen in these games. Perhaps all those “Glamberts” are waiting for a certain day to storm the fronts with fans. Who knows? Joshua Ledet has made a pretty big jump from last to 7th place. I say we give him, along with all his fans a round of applause.

There is still a lot of time left. Get out there and SUPPORT your favorite singer.

I have one question though… What is it about Archie that you all love? Is it that smile? His songs? Voice? Or is he just the cutest thing you’ve ever seen? Let me know in the comments, I’m very curious.

    Gladys,

I want to add my thanks to you for your generosity of spirit in sharing your feelings with us about meeting David and hearing him sing live for the first time. I remember years ago when you meekly came into unplugged knowing no English, but with a great love for this gifted young man. I would never attempt a Spanish chat room but you entered into the conversation just like you entered that plane to travel to Santiago: with a kind of perfect love that casts off fear. So thank you for taking us to that place he goes when he sings. We didn’t actually have to hear him ourselves to know what it must have felt like, because your feelings were those of all of us. Many of us have been there and know, but you never had and it was a thrill to share that special time with you. You labeled that part of your article correctly, it really is a miracle what he can do with a song.

I am a little bewildered at being accused of changing the rules of the site. My rules were only that no blogs be posted of other missionaries written for families and friends, without their knowledge that they might be quoted out of context or criticized by over-protective fans. I allowed pics of David at MTC, posing in casual attire with his companion missionaries, but that was the last of the photos that have appeared on this site. Since he arrived in Chile, no photos of him have been posted excepting the devotional poster that was produced by his mission for dissemination to the public and media. No photos or videos of David accompanied this post, though they do exist.

These are uncharted waters for us all, including David. As Ray pointed out, even David on the eve of his going, was not exactly sure why he needed to do this. He is learning as he goes what God wants him to do and how he can best carry out His will. We are all learning and it is a fluid situation. David has asked for respect and I think we and all of his fans have given him that and are still trying our best to do what is right and still keep the home fires burning for him. He said he can’t take us with him. He can’t take his family or friends with him either, though of course, he can communicate with them with the little time he is permitted.

I am sure I never said or read on this or another site that we can only refer to him as Elder Archuleta for the next two years. To be sure, if one meets him face to face while on his mission, that is the only way he can be addressed. But for a singer/celebrity who has many fan sites and is releasing music, videos, and promo while he is away, he must also continue to be David Archuleta, the Voice.

I have a list of thank yous. Of course, to Gladys for her love, bravery and beautiful post, to DJA for the help with the english, to Ray and Angelica for saying what I was thinking and to Cora and all the posters for sharing their thoughts and feelings.

I also think this is a very fluid situation. David did not know what would be expected of him when he was on his mission. When I try to put myself in the shoes of the Elders and Sisters in Chile, they also must have not known what to expect having David join them. We are very far from Chile and a culture away as well. Getting a young pop star that makes the girls (and ladies) scream must have been confusing to them too. If you don’t know David, you could think it would be time to bring him down a notch and help him learn some humility. But then they met David. And then they heard David sing. It has changed our lives. Why wouldn’t it also change theirs and perhaps their plans for him. You cannot put David’s light under a barrel. It looks like they are figuring out how to best let that light shine.

To me, if we are sharing what has been made public, we are being respectful of David and his mission.

Thank you for your responses. I didn’t explain myself very well I guess. I was just thinking that just because Gladys, who I’m sure is lovely, lived in SA and got permission to go, why is that different that if I called up to get permission and traveled there, or if a fan group from the US decided to go seek him out on his mission? Does proximity make it more OK? I don’t know. I just sort of think that is expressively what he did not want. Of course everyone will do what they justify to themselves to do. I’m not trying to stop anyone. No need getting angry at me just because I’m expressing my opinion. I just think I would feel better when I meet him again post-mission if I can say I truly tried to let him do his thing and not make his mission more of a ‘fan’ experience than it’s obviously going to turn out to be. If he’d wanted fans to travel to hear him sing, and take pictures and get autographs and read blogs about him, he could have stayed home. What I justify in my mind, which could be as wrong is what you do, is that he wanted a break from all of that to focus on God and to be a normal guy for once in his life. He never will have that chance ever again you know. Just think of that burden. So even though it looks like not very many other people are going to do it, I am going to give him that chance in my own little way, from my own little fan world experience. I care about what his real feelings are. And if there is the tiniest bit of suspicion that he would be unhappy about fan stuff on his mission, I don’t want to do it. I’d rather err on the side of too much caution.

The other thing that makes me think, is that he has given us almost constant music and vlogs and pictures of him NOT on his mission to tide us over. I mean really, guys, we haven’t been starving for non-mission David stuff and the album hasn’t even been released. I can happily focus on that without having to interrupt and intrude on his mission to fangirl. So for those who will not survive for 20 months without mention of him, well, guess what, we don’t have to. His career is plainly one thing where we can carry on as normal. His mission, in my opinion, based on my interpretations of what he and Kari have said, is not where we carry on as normal.

Thank you for listening. I know there are others that feel as strongly. It just sometimes really does confuse me at times and I feel all alone.

Please note that aside from being our “Behind-the-Scenes Geek” here at The Voice, and apart from her full-time job and family, djafan does translating professionally. She’s a one-woman operation and gets full credit for the Spanish to English translation of this article.

I read Gladys’ recap twice the day it was published. Then I read it again before posting this comment. There is nothing that is disrespectful. It’s simply a poignant recollection of events leading up to a fan’s very first encounter with David, who she waited so long to meet. She very generously shared the details of her story. Was this considered David’s private time? In my opinion, since it was open to the public, it is not considered private time.

    Cora,
I appreciate your comments. I think that David surmised and was well aware that fans would be at the devotional since it was a public event. In an ideal world, he’d be able to separate his private life from his public life, but as David’s popularity continues to rise, it will probably get more difficult as time passes to accomplish this feat.

I completely agree w/ Cora! This is wrong on so many levels. I know fans will rationalize their behavior in any way possible to make this behavior right in their heads… but in the end it’s just wrong and disrespectful. Going to one of Davids church meetings while on his mission as a “fan” is disrespectful and I’m horrified that this story that reads like a concert VIP event is even posted. I have a feeling if David were to see this on a fansite he would be just as disenchanted by the story and the fact that its posted. He worked his fingers to the bone up to the day he left for his fans so that this would not happen. He should have just spent the time w/ his family if his “fans” were just going to chase him down anyway. It makes me sad. I don’t care if David was singing in a church right next to my house within walking distance. I know my boundaries and I know what he has asked of me as his fan. I would never even think of showing up early like at a concert… reserving my seat… and sitting there as a fan. It’s just so wrong. But just my opinion… continue to rationalize all you want…

I generally don’t post here but read frequently. I apologize for being a bit shy. Tonight, though, seeing some comments I felt the need to offer something. It makes me sad to see people sitting in judgment on other fans. We all care for David. Who are any of us to call the way one person cares for him wrong? People say they speak the words of David but they are coloring it with their own interpretation. I will not offer my thoughts on specifically what is being talked about tonight because its not my place. I will just offer this verse that I’m sure David is familiar with:

“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven”

Lets not split apart at a time when we most need to stick together and support each other. With that wish, I’ll go back to being quiet and reading. I think you are all awesome fans ❤

David’s purpose on his mission is to convert people to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The devotional was a missionary effort and if Gladys was there as a fan she wasn’t the only one. People came to see David and he hoped that by their being there they learned something about his religion. Did Gladys learn more about David’s faith or more about David himself. I think she learned more than she knew about his religion. David would approve of that.

Things change, nothing is written in stone, nothing is black and white. I believe that David’s President allowed the public into the devotional because he heard him sing. And when he sings, you can feel God’s presence. Many have. I have. What could possibly be wrong with that? Nothing. It’s beautiful. And ten times that when it’s shared. ♥

    DAFAN,

Gladys did not write a recap of a church meeting; she wrote a recap of her experience meeting David for the first time.

We all think we know how David would feel, how he would react and what he would do. The reality is that we don’t know how he would react. Perhaps if any fans were there, he was glad he was able to teach them about his religion.

I am a closet fan so I occasionally come here to read articles and comments. I just want Gladys to know I am thankful for her recap. It’s a confirmation to me that David is doing exactly what he went to Chile for. He wanted to share his faith to people and he is doing that partly by singing. When David asked the fans to respect his decision to become a missionary, I thought he was telling the fans to try and not make it difficult for him to fulfill his duties. In my mind, there is nothing in Gladys’ conduct that would fall in that category. There are fans that jump into hurtful accusations like they really know David’s heart. It makes me cringe when I think of fans who think they know what’s good and what’s bad for David. Who do they think they are?????!!!!! I don’t think that Gladys’ trip to Chile to listen to a missionary sing in a public concert where everyone is invited would impede that missionary’s ability to fulfill his duties. David probably didn’t even know she came from another country. To him, she was just one of the audience. And if these know it all fans are angry because her recap is posted here, I just don’t see anything that is disagreeable in the article. David happens to be a celebrity and he has a huge following. You can’t stop any form of publicity for him. I dare you to try!

    With commitment

    1. I’m trying to be like Jesus;
    I’m following in his ways.
I’m trying to love as he did, in all that I do and say.
At times I am tempted to make a wrong choice,
But I try to listen as the still small voice whispers,

    2. I’m trying to love my neighbor;
I’m learning to serve my friends.
I watch for the day of gladness when Jesus will come again.
I try to remember the lessons he taught.
Then the Holy Spirit enters into my thoughts, saying:

    Chorus
“Love one another as Jesus loves you.
Try to show kindness in all that you do.
Be gentle and loving in deed and in thought,
For these are the things Jesus taught.”

Cora and DAFAN: Respectfully, who do you think they meant when the Church put up posters that said “Open to the Public”? Does it mean, “oh, except for David’s fans – they can’t come.” Is a fan not the public?

If this was a session that was private – and it was leaked to the public – then your concerns would be absolutely valid. No one should be sneaking into private events or hovering around while David does his day-to-day duties. But that was not the case. The Church even saw fit to have a greeting session afterward. They aren’t unaware of David’s celebrity. I’m sure they knew that there would be some people there to see David in particular. They dealt with it carefully, and pleasantly, even establishing reasonable boundaries for that event that the fans respected (don’t address him as David, no hugs, no screaming). Seems like all handled it in a very classy way – both Church officials and fans.

The next day, everyone went back to their normal business and perhaps with a fuller, more joyful heart. No harm done.

With all due respect I heard David loud and clear when he said on his final vlog the words… “respect”… “this is a very private thing”. I will continue to take that as off limits to anyone not getting his weekly emails. Although this was a public event… Davids mission is private to him. If he wanted us to know precisely where he is and what he was doing he would be sharing it through Kari. If this recap were about learning of Davids faith instead of the nuances of his face, his eyebrows, and him dropping his hymn book I might look at the situation differently. But I don’t read any excitement about learning about David’s faith… which is what the church meeting was for. I’ll do as Cora and just know in my own little way when David gets back and when I look him in the eye that I kept everything about his Mission as private as he asked me to keep it. I know David will share what he wants to share with us when he gets back. And I will be excited to hear his stories. I enjoy visiting Davids fansites… I respect that everyone has their own opinion… I also hear David and Kari in terms of what David’s wishes are and in my heart I’ll continue to do whats best for me… just support David and enjoy everything that he has left for us.

Gladys… I love that you love gave David. I’m happy that you enjoyed your time at the devotional. Again… I apologize for sharing my opinion the way I did in my original post. I’m not a mean spirited person and I hope that we can just agree to disagree on this topic.

I don’t pretend to know what is in David’s head… apparently I just interpret what David has asked of me as his fan in a much different way. I really like The Voice so I will continue to visit on occasions when there is not something posted about David’s private time.

    Peace!

    Ana, AMEN! Abrra #81…..just beautiful!

I really feel compelled to speak up here, too. I am beyond thrilled that Gladys was able to experience what so many of us have already had the opportunity to enjoy, that being meeting David face to face and hearing him sing live. However, it is also very unclear to me where the “boundary line” is drawn. There are pictures and videos from the greeting session that occurred following the devotional (where cameras and video were clearly allowed) and I fail to understand how those are more of an invasion of David’s privacy than a blow by blow account of what occurred behind the “closed doors” during the devotional itself, during which participants we’re instructed to not take pictures or videos to maintain the spirituality of the event. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED hearing about Gladys’ experience but it’s just really confusing for me, too. I am not passing judgement on anyone and it really makes me sad when others do pass judgement based on what they think they might or might not do in a similar situation. The fact is, you just don’t really know what you would do until you are walking in those shoes.

This whole matter is very open to individual interpretation and we all must do what we feel is right and I feel all the moderators at all the fan sites have been very respectful thus far. It’s a tough job and I certainly wouldn’t want to do it but, in the end, we must all follow our own conscience in our quest to do the right thing. One thing I know, we all love David and want what’s best for him. DAFAN, it was very sweet of you to offer the apology to Gladys that you did. What’s the old saying? “Say what you mean, just don’t say it mean.”

I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to Gladys for sharing her first experience of hearing David sing and seeing him for the first time! I lurk here everyday and so enjoy The Voice and all of the commenters and site admins and bloggers. Bullying comes in many forms and using guilt as a weapon is as good as any, I guess. I am on the side of fans being able to go to a public event if they are able to attend. I feel sure Gladys was not the only fan there and that the reason for the large turn out was because of David’s part in the event. I have no idea what David actually meant in his goodbye vlog but I do know it has been beaten to death at this point. I wish those of us that are left and trying to support David so that he has some sort of foundation to build on when he comes back, would just agree to disagree on some issues and move forward. If you choose to look at missionary blogs and read commentary from a fan living her dream of seeing David for the first time, go for it. If you choose to not read anything about David on his mission, go for it. Bullying people, either way, will probably accomplish nothing more than further polarization of the fanbase and prejudices that will last long after David returns.

    Dear Friends

In the missions of the LDS Church, each area has a mission president whose job it is to oversee all the service done by the missionaries in that area. It is his job (together with his wife and some assistants) to see to their safety, their training and to set the goals for the mission as a whole. Each mission president is different in their own way. There are of course, the standard rules that will always apply. Then each mission president is asked to prayerfully care for the people in their own area, both those who are members of the church and those who are not. I imagine DAs’ mission president has prayed about how to care for both Elder Archuleta and the people he comes in contact with: whether or not to make use of his exceptional talents and if so, how often and in what manner. His mission president knows that if Elder Archuleta sings – that is going to effect the kind of mission experience that he is going to have. And it is going to effect all who hear him. Each in their own way.

Will this be good or bad?

Actually… I have no idea. I believe that this is best left up to those responsible for making those decisions. And I have no reserve in praying for not only DA (Elder Archuleta!!) but also his mission president and his companions, those he meets, etc. that the Lord will use him in the way He most desires, that DA will feel he is doing His will and receive the closeness of spirit and peace and joy to which he is so completely dedicated.

My feeling is that the angst comes from each “fan” deciding how to personally support DA during his mission, especially with the “respect” video in mind!

Would I travel across countries to hear him sing while he is on his mission? That question is answered in different ways by different people in different situations. And if his mission president is aware (as he must be!) of people doing just that and still has Elder Archuleta sing, then that is his call to make. That is between him and Elder Archuleta and the Lord. I trust them to work it out. God is good. DA is where he is for reasons we can hardly fathom. And I have reason to trust his “fans”. I see no division, just passion. I feel a deep gratitude for all who have been touched by DA and his great heart – because they DO care – no matter they may see things from different views. I think our discussion can help to support each other as we respect our differences. After all, DA sees our “true colors”, we can look with our hearts as well.

What I see is each ‘fan’ considering in their own hearts what is the best way to support DA. What could be more appropriate than that?

Lastly… I have often had a spiritual experience while listening to DA. Will some have “fan” experiences while listening to Elder Archuleta? Pretty sure that is going to happen. But I think the Lord knew that.

    With love and gratitude,
    bluesky

    Good Morning/Afternoon!

Welcome to The Voice all delurkers and sometime posters and long time regulars!!!

I went to sleep thinking what a passionate group of fans David has and I awake to find such uplifting comments. Thank you all ♥

Those that passionately disagree are entitled to disagree. My only hope is that it’s done in a compassionate and respectful manner because you have to remember that there are those (like me) that passionately disagree with you. Does that make me right? Make you right? I don’t know. But I do know that we all love David and we are doing our best on this unknown journey. If I were in Argentina I would have done exactly what Gladys did. For those of you that know her and her love for David for the past few years this was a miraculous blessing. An opportunity that may never present itself again though I hope it does.

I have been to many VIP’s and if I had to pick one thing that I observe in David is that he doesn’t judge, ever. He may not understand our unconditional love for him but he accepts it and if may go out on a limb here I believe he now embraces it, remember he ‘s in relationship with his fans, his words not mine. So I’d never presume to know what he would think or not of anything that goes on. I can speculate with the best of them but that’s it.

Abrra: Oh Yes. He is Effectiveness Squared!!

I still remember the occasion shown in the video above. Clear as if it were yesterday, I am standing a few rows back and up to the left of the stage on the risers.
It was my very first ‘road trip’ with friends to see DA. We had a blast. He tried out new songs. We were ecstatic. Then he came back on to do an encore. He was holding the green hymnal. His lovely piano accompanist sat down at the keyboard. We held our breath.

DA began to explain how he had this favorite song. He told how there were many times during Idol that he did not know what might happen or when he would wonder why he was there at all. He shared that at those times he would sing this song to himself and it would help him. He told us that he thought it might be appropriate at this time and place to share a bit with us how very much his closeness to the spirit meant to him and how that connection helped him like no other could.

He said he would need the book because he might forget the words as he sang. We could all tell that this was a very tender moment for him.

    He sang.

The tears rolled down his face and down ours as well. He sang to his God and painted an image of that God on our hearts – as though he saw the image clearly when he closed his eyes, and just as clearly when he opened them and gazed into our eyes.

When he finished so many of us were frozen in place. I know that I and those around me hardly knew if we clapped or cried or spoke or breathed for some space of time.

    I will never forget.

Oh, yes. He will effect those who hear him.

Peace, love and joy be yours, DA. Today, tonight and always. Rest in the arms of that angel you love. Work with all your might. Play. Laugh.

Then come home and bring all your mind-blowing amazingness with you. We want to play, too. And we will.

I am as uber protective of David and his mission as anyone, probably more than most, and I really think this event was different. It was public. I loved the recap. It was respectful and loving. I loved the little snippet of video that showed up with the giggling girls. It was respectful and loving. I do understand the desire to protect this time in David’s life and think the rest of his experiences should be private. But this one was public. Different. Completely. I realize this has been said and resaid above, I just wanted to add my voice. And to say that I loved and agreed with Bluesky!

There goes Abrra rocking my world with scream caps again. I was watching her masterpiece “Mr. Confidence” in The Voice Unplugged yesterday when I remembered Abrra mentioning in chat that she had a difficult time writing. If a picture is worth 1,000 words, how many words is that video worth? There are not enough words to explain or replace “Mr. Conficence” for me. I just hope Abrra continues to do her writing with visuals instead of words.

Pretty sure David was sent to Chile for a reason. My personal opinion is that part of that reason is for David to connect with Gladys and others like her. Gladys was one who felt that magnetic pull of David from the very first time she saw him. We all wonder why that happens to some and not others. I think she did not travel to Chile as a “fangirl” but rather as someone whose very being needed to reach out to him. I applaud her restraint in making sure she approached this experience in a reverent and respectful manner. I really feel Gladys’s position is different from mine, or those of us who have had many opportunities to meet David.

Sky, that was Emily with the ninja-altered purse recording device in A2. She was sitting a couple of rows ahead of me. If I remember correctly, her parents help her make it.
I met a couple when we were walking out that night who had quietly recorded the entire show. They were huge fans. Two gorgeous men. I often wonder what they did with it. They told me they had the whole thing. I wish I’d gotten their names. Oh wells. 🙂
Love the Begin talk amongst the Rem and U2 fans.
Oh – I lasted 2 days while trying to revirginize my ears to the snippets. I am not good at it.

Emmegirl Thank you for the link.

This is exactly what David is doing with his career, post Jive. He is cutting his own path in music.

“You needed the record label. You needed to go to the recording studio. You needed to get on the radio. You needed to be in record stores. You needed all these intermediaries. Everybody I ever became aware of followed that map,” he says. “And now technology has completely disintermediated the business, and so now you have music and art, and people who consume those things directly. Therefore, it can go anywhere.”

The author hits this point about authenticity.

“I think a lot of this stuff is specific to particular genres and subgenres of music, and the old distinction between rock and pop, where the people on the pop side are not expected to be authentic in the same way as the people on the rock side,”

David has proven that he is authentic when he sings ANY genre of music.

Reading this article brought me back to Angelica’s https://thevoicedavidarchuleta.com/2009/12/15/the-lacer-of-souls/

“It is a sound as pure as the life and soul behind it, as rich as the scope of all his days, and the accumulated wealth of countless acts of sacrifice and kindness. It… he, lifts you up and wafts through you like a clean mountain breeze, redolent of spice and wild flowers and a kind of natural, virtuous sensuality.”

“He who laces the shoe is himself the gift. The gift shows himself every time he appears. He is there, always, in whatever he does, the living personification of his art. He is the piece of the puzzle that fits so tightly there is no space he does not fill. He is David Archuleta and he IS the Voice.”

One of my all time favorite articles.

Coming out of lurkdom to say that I am disheartened to read that some fans feel the need to chastise Gladys because she traveled to see David at a “public” devotional event.  Who has any right to say to anyone else that they shouldn’t attend an event that is open to the public…much less a spiritual event?  A “fan” doesn’t have the right to attend a spiritual event because David is part of it?  David’s Mission leaders knew exactly what they were doing when they opened this event up to the public.  I don’t recall reading on the event poster that only people from the local area could attend!  They knew people would be attending because David was to be part of it.  His picture was featured prominently front and center on the poster.  What was their hope would happen with this spiritual event…that people might draw closer to Christ or investigate more about the Mormon faith?  Who would even DARE to question how the Spirit moves a person? NO ONE could ever know what seeds were planted in hearts that night (even in the fans of David Archuleta). David is on this mission to grower deeper in his relationship with God as well as to bring people closer to Christ. I would hardly feel David would want anyone turned away from attending because they were a fan of his.

I simply do not understand why some fans keep bringing up the issue of respect.  David has asked his fans to be respectful of this time and I have yet to see anyone not doing this.  I have yet to hear that fans are chasing him down on the streets of Chile asking for autographs.  All the pictures I have seen of David on his mission have been pictures where he has posed in them.  If he doesn’t want his picture taken, then he can open his mouth and say no thank you!  Simple!  If fans don’t feel they should be reading missionary blogs or looking at pictures of him on his mission…then don’t…that’s your choice and I respect that but please stop trying to put a guilt trip on those who choose to.

    🙂

Was really late to chat last night due to unexpected Neil Diamond tickets. Neil was always a favorite of mine until David. Actually the Neil Diamond AI was the first time I watched. I had seen David in Star Search, but I was not prepared for when I saw him on AI. I watched to see Neil, and was surprised that I thought David had outsung him. And everybody else.

Anyway, Oddity went with me and we had a great time. Neil has 4 x’s as many musicians (they are real musicians, not wannabes) and backup singers that David does not. He really sings and has no fireworks or naughty words or anything just for show. I was trying to figure out the difference in liking Neil and being crazy nuts about David. For one thing, I did not care if Neil was sweaty. I have no clue if he wore form-fitting pants because it never occurred to me to check. I didn’t mind the crowd being noisy. It was a party and lots of fun, but did not change me. David changes me.

I am ready for a David concert. But I will be really happy with a new CD. Yay!! And pretty soon the first JULY will disappear from the side bar. Double Yay!!

Dayzee, glad you got to see a Neil concert! I have got to go to 2 of them and they are a lot of fun. He always been one of my favorites, along with Elvis. But I have to agree on the David “thing”. He just has “it” that makes his singing soar way above anyone else! He doesn’t even need any music, his voice is so pure and in tune!♥ So, David is now #1 in my book and always will be.
7 more days until I have that sweet album in my little hands!!♥ Oh, to hear the whole songs!

” I was trying to figure out the difference in liking Neil and being crazy nuts about David. For one thing, I did not care if Neil was sweaty. I have no clue if he wore form-fitting pants because it never occurred to me to check.” ROFL!! hahaha

glad you and Oddity had a good time.HA! My nephew had a dvd of one of his concerts from a couple years ago, and he had so many people on stage with him it was crazy!all excellent musicians and singers.
“It was a party and lots of fun, but did not change me. David changes me.” ♥ I love that Dayzee. I know no one else has ever affected me the way David has. Its almost like calling ourselves “fans”, is an understatement.
