Nandito Ako and the Audaciousness of David Archuleta

When David accepted the offer to do a mini-series in the Philippines, I think it was one of the best moves he ever made. Not just because I have enjoyed this mini-series more than I could have ever imagined, but for David himself. This project gave him the opportunity to stretch himself, and he didnβt waste it. In Nandito Ako, he was asked to portray a character that is similar to him in some ways but very different in others. And he did it. He gave a performance convincing enough that the line between David Archuleta and Josh Bradley began to blur. That is truly an amazing feat for a novice actor.
David had no real acting experience to speak of when he began this project and only one day of acting classes before arriving in the Philippines. Once he got there, he had to jump right in and begin working while getting an on the job crash course in acting. I canβt begin to imagine how difficult it was for him, and how daunting. He was expected to reply to other actorsβ lines, with the proper emotion, while they were speaking another language. Normally, there is a two-way conversation. One actor shoots his or her lines and the other responds to what they are saying. But, David didnβt have the luxury of understanding the other half of his conversations. He could only go by what he was told others were saying and react to the emotion they portrayed. On top of that, he must have had to memorize the last few words of the other actorsβ lines so he would know when to come in with his. Even a veteran actor would find that very challenging.Β For someone whoβs never acted in a drama of any kind before to be able to do it, and do it well, is quite an accomplishment.
In addition to the language barrier, David himself admitted that he has gone way outside of his comfort zone to do the scenes in this production since heβs not one who usually shows extreme emotion in public. And thatβs exactly what the scenes called for. We have seen him angry, defensive, pleading, fighting, crying, and even a little sassy and snarky. And weβve seen him do romantic scenes.
Most of us donβt stop to think that the two involved are not alone and there is probably no romantic song playing in the background while he does the scene. Instead, there are lights, microphones, cameras, cables lying on the ground, a whole crew watching, and a director critiquing his every move. This shy young man is expected to do a romantic scene with an entourage watching, possibly having to do it over and over until the director gets the shot he wants.
And yet, he was wonderful! No one could have asked for more. If David can pull this off under these difficult circumstances, I think he has great potential for future acting projects if he decides thatβs what he wants to do. Is he an award-winning actor? No, not yet.Β But with some lessons and a little more experience, who knows?
Iβve always said that there is no end to what David is capable of in regards to artistic talent but I was usually referring to music. Since watching Nandito Ako, I have revised that opinion. I now sincerely believe that David can do anything he sets his mind to.
Itβs staggering to watch him learn and adapt so quickly, with only three weeks from the beginning to the end of this project. And I havenβt even begun to talk about how in the midst of it all, he was doing mall appearances, interviews, performances, dealing with new contract negotiations for the Bench endorsement and the album, photo shoots, commercials, music videos, and recording! How did he not go insane from the pace of it all?

To say that what he accomplished in the Philippines in just one month is amazing just isnβt enough. And heβs only twenty one years old! Can you even imagine what the future might hold?

MT, this is what is most incredible to me. How David kept his focus on the task at any given moment. You have given a concise description of the genius of David’s many talents.

To me, “strength and balance” seems to be characteristic of David’s life and in all he wants to accomplish.

MT When you put it that way David is even more amazing then I thought. To do so much in so little time and do it well is quite a feat. He took a big leap of faith to act in the mini-series. If he had failed he might have been ridiculed. David once again proves that if we put our minds to it and work hard we can achieve wonderful things.

I actually wrote this after week 2, and his acting skills just keep getting better. He has managed to dig deep and bring a lot of emotion into his performance. I am so hooked on this show! (and on David, too! But you knew that. π )

I never would’ve imagined it lol The fact that David does these all convincingly is proof of his genius not only in singing but anything he does. For someone who says that he can’t multitask well he just mastered it, just wow at all he accomplished in a little over a month. The last four years have truly been remarkable. I agree 100% with you that if David wants to do something he will succeed, period.
I can’t wait for Forevermore (just purchased from WOWHD after having purchased one from Odyssey lol) The vocals in this songs simple arrangement are so pure, the tone is magnificent. I’m so in love with it and just thinking of the rest of the album is making me anxious.

Your analysis of David’s performance in “Nandito Ako” is a pleasure to read. His willingness to take on such a task gives me inspiration to accomplish things I want to do, even though I am ages older than he is. It had to be hard to work with a language barrier, even with Tagalog being similar to Spanish. The two languages are different enough to make it hard to undertand. Yet he persevered. But isn’t that what David always does when faced with a challenge?
I commend the writers, too, for such an interesting storyline; one good enough to hold David’s interest. I know he was attracted to it because of the family love aspect. But the love triangle makes the story so interesting, too.
I’m waiting for the translations but I’m assuming that he alienated both girls in today’s episode; first Holly when he told her he was in love with someone else in the states and then Anya when Holly relayed that information to her by phone. I guess we’ll see. LOL

This article is fantastic!! I agree wholeheartedly. I have been rather shocked at how well David has done with something that can’t have been easy. (And somehow, that surprises me, that I’d underestimate him again, since so often he gives so much to provide the best in entertainment, no matter the form of art.
Two years won’t be easy but it’s so much fun to be surprised and surprised again by the amazing David. I’ll be around.
And in the upcoming years, I think I’ll revisit some fan site archives. Thanks to all of the writers at The Voice for making this fan thing so much fun.

I have just been eating up the many different emotions and faces that David has shown us…and I think that 98% of it is pure David…love when he’s a little upset with someone how the archugrowl comes out.
Because I am the “Five W’s lady–anyone else have a guess on the time frame of this story—I figure three to four days —tops. The first week or so I was beginning to wonder if Margarite owned any other dresses.

Like you, I am anxious to see the next episode but hate to get to the end because then itβs over.
About the timeline, hmmm β¦Good question. Letβs see. Starting with his date with Holly, 1-2 days between βthe dateβ and the time he βran away.β (Does a 22 year-old run away? Or just leave? LOL Sounds funny.) Anyway, then 1-2 days at Anyaβs house, then everything since they left Anyaβs house is only one weekend. (I think David wore those shorts for about 4-5 episodes, so itβs all the same day.) So youβre right, it really hasnβt covered much time at all. I think maybe 5-6 days. Itβs amazing how complex the relationships have become in such a short time!

Thank you for reminding us all of how demanding this project was for David while having to juggle so many other balls at the same time. Inexperienced at acting and working at a disadvantage linguistically, he achieved something extraordinary. He made us believe in the character of Josh Bradley and brought to the surface a level of emotional depth the rest of the cast had long since plumbed. His stubborn work ethic, his perfectionism, his courage and yes, sheer audacity to try new things is boundless. He feels the fear and he does it anyway and he does it better every time. I believe that this release of so many emotions, “angry, defensive, pleading, fighting, crying, and even a little sassy and snarky….romantic..” will inform his musical performances as well.
I think too about all the other stuff he had to do at the time and wonder like you: “How did he not go insane from the pace of it all?” I get tweets the last couple of days of working on music and I think, (this is just the mother in me) “Oh poor baby, get some rest, don’t worry about us so much.” He never stops, never gives up, never stops giving.
Nandito ako. And I always will be for him.

Thanks for your great comments! David has amazed me during this Nandito Ako experience!! Today when he got angry with Uncle Steve and said “No you shut up” and we saw the anger in his face, I just shook my head! David’s facial expressions and lines have been amazing for a non actor!! He is a work horse and it saddens me to read his latest tweets about him working to get his recordings done before he leaves! In my opinion, he should have just come back from the Philippines and spent the entire time relaxing with his family. “He never stops, never gives up, never stops giving.” What a true statement!!

So…. Thanks TV5 and MyDearWriter, for going through all of the fan videos and choosing the parts that we watched over and over again. This story is like a recap of so many “moments” during AI and just after, that I have to give a big “hats off” to your ingenuity in stuffing it so full of “fan moments” while at the same time being true to your characters.
Whether it totally works for the story line is not for me to judge since I am getting it by translation and am not familiar with your customs and culture enough to know. But this is more than clear: you have a high regard for the fans and their relationship to DA. Unlike some enterprises that might “use” the fandom as a narrow resource to be kept in their place and at a distance in the scheme of things, your view allows you to enthusiastically embrace the fans and value their love and loyalty while promoting your own work with DA. My hat is off to you with love and respect.
No wonder DA chooses to work with you. He knows you will treat more than just him with consideration. You take him as a package deal with his fans, and create a “win win” situation. A new paradigm for sure.
My only advice: Keep having fun.

Hi all-
DA 2014 is a new campaign that is being created to unite ALL David fans around the world together over the next 2 years around one idea β WE WILL BE HERE. If there is any doubt out there about the loyalty and strength of this fan base, this campaign will put those doubts to rest. There will always be different subsets of the fandom but this campaign is meant to promote that one singular message and to include absolutely EVERYONE who wants to be a part of it. No boundaries, no exclusion.
The other main goal is to have a centralized place where projects (charitable and otherwise) can be tracked so that at the end of 2 years, we can all see how much good we were able to collectively do. This campaign has no fan site affiliation. Anyone who has a good idea and is willing to take the lead and put the energy behind it is welcome to run with it. The hope is that there will be many different projects over the next 2 years but that weβll all continue to do things under the DA 2014 umbrella just to keep track of everything that is happening. With inspiration and motivation, anything is possible so the sky is the limit. More on how this will be rolled out later. Right now the focus will be on the following:
We are kicking off the launch with 2 exciting projects. The first is Karinβs (@zerogravity1) #DA2014 merchandise line, which should go live this Friday March 16th. A portion of all sales of #DA2014 merchandise will go to ChildFund International in Davidβs honor. More details to follow soon.
The second is a special video to highlight the incredible size and diversity of the fan base and to officially launch the DA 2014 campaign on Friday March 23rd.
We need as much participation as possible to make this video happen, but we also have a very small time frame to complete it, so please read the following instructions closely and spread the word to every fan you know. Please include the hashtag #DA2014 in any tweets you send but please DO NOT attach Davidβs @DavidArchie twitter handle.
Hereβs what we need:
A photo of YOU holding a sign that says the words: Iβll be here, your name, your location and the hashtag #DA2014.
So a generic example of a sign would be:

It also helps that David was backed by a wonderful team in TV5. He got the best resources pulling for him — one of the best directors in town, outstanding coaches in the persons of Ms Ana Feleo and Ms Gina Alajar, close-knitted production crew (the whole lot came from Direk’s crew from GMA7) and superb creative team, and I don’t mean the technical side. All these help him blossom into this more confident, more relaxed, more mature, more open and more daring David.
And that’s only for 38 days! When he comes back from his mission, his sensitivity and self-introspection will be at its peak.

YT is linked to gmail and google . Not sure what you say applies to wordpress. I use a different for each and I had no problems here. They do upgrades and it’s random as to who has a problem, depending on whether the log in server is up.
It should clear up when they are done.

Since he is a musical genius I would say that piano playing was off the cuff. But I think he has been practicing. Remember in Malaysia he was going to sing this song but was interrupted and we never got to hear it, till now.
What I noticed in this video is how when the girl faltered David filled in with his singing to help bring her back. Then when she continued he stopped singing so she could be in the spotlight again. This is the generous, humble David we all love so much.
I am really going to miss his singing and following his every move on the internet so much when he’s gone. Sometimes I feel like I am watching a real life soap on his life and all the fans are commentators cheering him on. LOL.

MT, I’m late on thanking you for a great article and for reminding us how lucky we all are to be fans of David. He really has spoiled us!
What a great episode today…and great acting from all 3 principal actors. The scenes were tough ones…especially for David! I was impressed how he really made those lines work, when they so easily could have come off awkward. And, for someone who has never been in a relationship before, he made me a believer!…hand holding, 2-armed hugs, “I love you” in 2 different lauguages, hand-to-heart, cheesy romantic lines, and the famous “you’ve turned my world upside down” handstand! Haha…David sure stepped out of his comfort zone! I can’t wait for the serenading tomorrow–Anya is a goner for sure! No one can resist that!
It was nice to see David enjoying himself in the BTS video.

MT, what a great way of reminding us (like we can forget) about how wonderful David is. Thanks for your ideas. His talent just keeps getting better. And, so is this soap opera. I’m so hooked on it. I can’t get enough of today’s episode–breathtaking!! I’m kinda scared for next week tho’. It’s obvious that it’s going to take until Friday to get it figured out. The trailers go every which way with the storyline.
I had a comment all typed in last night, but couldn’t get into wordpress, and then when I did, the comment was gone, and I was frustrated so I didn’t try to remember what I had typed. Then with birthday celebrations today, and turning a year older, I just plain forgot what I had going last night.
It sounds like we are in for a treat with the songs that David is going to release over the next 2 years. I have a question…maybe someone has the answer. Is Kari still acting as his ‘manager’? I know he referred to her as his road manager, but I don’t know how that relates to manager/management. Any ideas? Just wondering.

Marshmallow Dreams is a local company that I worked with in creating all of the Nandito Ako Viewing Party items as well as the #DA2014 merchandise I had for the same event. They do beautiful work, have quality products and are going to donate 10% of all merchandise sold back to the #DA2014 We Will Be Here Campaign which will then be donated to ChildFund International in Davidβs name. It is difficult being the gracious hostess when people drop in at the same time a new episode pops up with subtitles. Trying to keep up a conversation while thinking of an excuse to go spend a half hour with my computer. Sometimes David gives me a headache.

I dunno if Brazil has anything to do with it. The video has almost 7 million hits. The young man seems to be popular in the Latino community. Funny how we have different takes on what David tweets. My reaction was that he was engaged with his mom in watching a good singer. One on one time with mom is most precious right now.
