David Archuleta ~ On to Utah and Abravanel Hall

Posted by djafan on Sunday, December 18, 2011

Hard to believe this incredible tour is almost at an end.  What a beautiful gift he has given to us all this Christmas.  To those attending the concert at Abravanel Hall, may you be blessed with comfort and joy and safe travels.

For each and every one of us making final preparations for the holidays, take time to have a Silent Night and reflect on the true reason for the season.

I need a Silent Night

I’ve made the same mistake before
Too many malls, too many stores
December traffic, Christmas rush
It breaks me till I push and shove.

Children are crying while mothers are trying
To photograph Santa and sleigh
The shopping and buying and standing forever in line
What can I say?

I need a silent night, a holy night
To hear an angel voice through the chaos and the noise
I need a midnight clear, a little peace right here
To end this crazy day with a silent night

December comes then disappears
Faster and faster every year
Did my own mother keep this pace
Or was the world a different place?

Where people stayed home wishing for snow
Watching three channels on their TV
Look at us now rushing around
Trying to buy Christmas peace.

I need a silent night, a holy night
To hear an angel voice through the chaos and the noise
I need a midnight clear, a little peace right here
To end this crazy day with a silent night.

What was it like back there in Bethlehem
With peace on earth, good will toward men?

Every shepherd’s out in the field
Keeping watch over their clock by night
And the glory of the Lord shone around them
And they were so afraid

And the angels said fear not for behold
I bring you good news of a great joy that shall be for all people
For unto you is born this day a Savior, who is Christ the Lord
And his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Prince of Peace

I need a silent night, a holy night
To hear an angel voice through the chaos and the noise
I need a midnight clear, a little peace right here
To end this crazy day with a silent night
To end this crazy day with a silent night.

Signed in this morning & watched the Forbes mini-Christmas concert AGAIN ~if David only knew how his voice touches people he would, no doubt, be overwhelmed! I constantly ask myself why I can’t bring myself to look at him in VIP (except for very lst time) & I’ve decided it’s because how “overwhelmed” I am to be standing in front of him ~my brain won’t allow me to process it. Makes me mad..lol but I walk away feeling some kind of inner peace just the same. This TOUR has been beyond INCREDIBLE for the fans & I honestly feel that David knew how much we needed it. Once again, he came through for us & that’s what keeps us coming back for more. Thank you David from the bottom of my heart! ♥

There are so many beautiful moments David has given us this tour. Like he looked inside our heads and found out what we really wanted for Christmas, and just gave it to us.
That Ave Maria. I listened to it last night and immediately felt my mom around me. I know it sound strange, but there it is. What a good feeling. ♥
p.s. I know she was looking down and listening and smiling. I KNOW it.

  11. Does anyone know why David gace a hug to Ben at the end of LDB Anaheim? He did say that he is going home to New Zealand for Christmas, so could this have been his last concert? He is coming back when he gets the call, said rather briefly in Stroudsburg.

I’m expecting tonight’s show to be the highlight of the tour although there were so many highlights already. So excited for all those who will experience the magic of David singing for his hometown audience.

    David tweets:

@DavidArchie: Back in my hometown Salt Lake!! Show tonight at Abravanel Hall! So excited!

Catching some random tweets for tonight:

OK guys….word is they r going to “attempt” a livestream tonight!!!!!! Hang tight!!! ….and SQUEEE!!!<Oh please! Let it be true!

WOW! Orchestra and gospel choir. Only the best for the best!

@DavidArchie am excited for u! kind of bummed ur tour is almost over! but u need a much DESERVED holiday break. u will surely be missed!

There's no room on the stage for D. Not sure how this is going to work. This hall is beautiful btw! Did I mention that I'm excited.

I'm watching rehearsal at abravenal hall!!!!!! Jeff is here. Orchestra is huge. There's going to be 8 singers and a gospel choir.

Arrived at Abravanel. Letting us wait inside.

Before all the wonderful tweets and videos start pouring in, I thought I would share a review of GCT I found yesterday in our local paper.

“This year’s release, “Glad Christmas Tidings”, features music recorded last holiday season with the young American alumnus David Archuleta. As a Utahn and a member of the LDS Church, Archuleta seems like an obvious choice for one of the choir’s special Christmas guest stars. However, listening to Archuleta it’s also obvious that he didn’t earn this gig based on his residency and religion. The boy can sing.
Even Silent Night–which has been done so manuy times it’s becoming boring–finds new life and beauty with Archuleta’s golden voice. He even sings in Spanish on the fun “Los Pastores Belen,” which finds the Orchestra at Temple Square transforming into a mariachi band.
Along with expected numbers like “Joy to the world” and “Away in a Manger,” Archuleta, the choir and orchestra also take on some more adventurous pieces like “The Cat and the Mouse Carol.”

The reviewer goes on to say, “the first 50 minutes of the album are flawless,” stating that the only weakness is the overly dramatic recitation of the story told by Michael York.

Speaking of GCT, we had a bit of a family gathering at my mother’s yesterday. She proudly and ceremoniously pulled out a gift for me…she was so excited, she opened it herself! It was the CD and DVD of GCT. I did my best acting and showed appropriate glee! My 10 year old daughter opened her mouth to say something, but then realized it was best to keep up the charade. Well, at least I have an autographed one now!

Top 5 Christmas Releases This Year

Many artists have taken on Christmas classics this holiday season, but here are the Top 5 Christmas releases of this year.

    1. Glad Christmas Tiding – Mormon Tabernacle Choir ft. David Archuleta

This year’s Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas album is one of their best ever, featuring singer David Archuleta and lots of new arrangements on classic and unknown holiday songs. The MoTab Choir performs their beautiful rendition of “Away In The Manger” and their fun “A Christmas Roundelay,” while David Archuleta sings “Los pastores a belen” in Spanish and his majestic “Gesu Bambino” with the choir. Also on the album is David Archuleta’s original arrangement of “Silent Night,” and he then later joins the choir for a gorgeous final song, “Angels, from the Realms of Glory.” Glad Christmas Tidings is full of Christmas spirit, as you can tell everyone singing really feels the joy of the season.

Ram, I agree. I think this decision was made very recently, maybe even today. Everything David has said recently would indicate that he would be very much a recording artist. Why make a video and announce that it will be released in a few weeks if you plan on leaving the business for an extended period of time? I believe that something happened very recently to cause this decision.

After watching the video that Abrra posted, I am much more at peace with David’s decision. David did not audition for American Idol to become a rich and famous pop star. He is, at his core, a nice kid from Utah who loves to sing and share his enormous gift. However, David has much to give than just his wonderful singing talent, and wherever he goes on this MIssion, those that he meets and touches will forever be uplifted and blessed to have been in the company of David Archuleta.

When he comes back he will have gained confidence and maturity. He is leaving on a career high point. We will not forget him while he does his mission. Who among us would want to hold him from his hearts desire? Once this part of his life is accomplished,he will be able to write from a new, more mature perspective. He will learn what is in his heart and be ready to share with us through his music, again.

Thank you for such a really touching story.

I am going to take the liberty to post it here. Thank you for sending me this email.

“Hi ladies~ Saturday night at the Grove I sat next to a woman and her teenage daughter. They are die hard fans like us. The mom Laurie told me she & daughter were at the Grove last year to see David. A young woman working in the dining section of the Grove was setting the tables. Laurie asked her if she got to meet David. The girl said she has never had such an experience as with David. He was watching her get the tables ready and came to her and said he is so fortunate because people are coming to hear him sing. He said he wanted to help her. He then proceeded to put a table cloth on each table. Oh, David! It seems he has been living his life as a mission all along. ”

You have to respect this kind of humility

I guess I’ll have to be my own role model for the next 2 years. David is a shining, living example of the best way to live one’s life. Even though I’m old enough to be his grandpappy, I’ve been watching, listening, and learning from David, and I am a much better person than I was 4 years ago. I owe so much to him, and his singing was just one of ways that he got my attention. He is truly one of the most special people I have ever encountered, and he did it all before he was 21.

If ever there was a human masterpiece, it is and will continue to be, David Archuleta.

I’ve been sobbing and watching that video seeing how hard this was for him as it was for us and it breaks my heart. I don’t plan on going anywhere, I can’t go anywhere. Somehow someway we will find a way to let him know of our unconditional love and support for him always.

I so agree with you Abrra. I am feeling so sad but I think that he deserves to follow his heart and also to do what most of the other guys his age and in his church do and we know that David will spread love and thoughtfulness and real caring whereever he goes. I would not begrudge him college and I don’t this even though it makes me sad. However, I can survive on youtubes, etc. and please, please keep this wonderful blog site open – I am so uplifted by all the humor and life-sentiments that are shared here even though I mostly lurk. The thinks that David have been working on will go on into the future even if he is on a mission. (I hope he has a good accountant and lawyer minding the store while he is gone but feel bad for worrying about that)

Bliss – Well said in #64. I am also at peace with his decision. It must have been difficult for him to make this major decision. He gave his fans so much in the last three and half years, and we should understand that he is just going to fulfill his other dream. He is such an exceptional young man! I gave him a lot of credit to make this decision and he has all my respect. When we get older, time flies faster. We will miss him, but his music will be with us. I’ll be here waiting patiently for his return.

From AFS, the text of David’s announcement.

    David Archuleta Mission Announcement

    12/19/2011

I can’t tell you how special it’s been being able to come back here and do this Christmas tour and sing these songs that just mean a lot to me and to have all of you here tonight with us. There’s no place like home. I always say that. Looking back through these last few years and all the support we’ve had and all the amazing experiences we’ve had and I’ve had, I feel very blessed in my life. While I’m home in front of you guys here tonight, I would like to make a special announcement that I’ve chosen to serve a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It’s not because someone told me that I was supposed to do it, not because that I no longer want to do music anymore, but it’s because it’s the feeling that I felt that I need to do next in my life. It’s just the same feeling that I’ve always followed, tried to follow, in my life. It’s the feeling that’s allowed me to have the opportunities I’ve had, the challenges I’ve had to overcome, and the blessings, too. I’ve learned to trust that feeling and I’ve learned that I need to answer when it calls. That is the reason why I know that I need to do this in my life. I just wanted to thank you guys. I’ll be going the first half of next year. I just wanted announce that while I was home here in front of you guys because you mean so much to me. Thank you so much.

At 2:40 in the video … I’m not quite sure what he says, but it sounds like he says he’ll be home for the first half of the year. So I guess he could still be following the plans he mentioned for the beginning of next year. Music, acting … I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happnes after the first of the year.

The more I think about it, the more I understand his decision. He may feel like he just can’t move forward with his life until he’s fulfilled this part of his life’s plan. He is a remarkable young man and he needs to so what he feels if right for him.

I am happy for him if this is what he wants.

But it still makes me sad. I will truly miss him and the joy he brings to my life. The little piece of my heart that belongs to him will still belong to him when he returns.

Bliss♥ thank you. You of course speak the truth so well.
Watching the video, and watching Davids face as he announced his decision….I know he has to do what his gut tells him to do, that is why we love him so much, and I will always remain a fan of David Archuleta. The journey with him continues…..
but much will change in our beautiful world that we have enjoyed for the past few years.

Part of me still wishes he had waited until the New Year, after the beauty of the Tour was done, to announce to his fans his decision.

A couple of days ago I wrote my response to seeing DA in Cedar City, UT. I wrote:
Passion – thy name is David Archuleta

Tonight I was there in Abravanel Hall, I need to amend my former statement:
Courage – thy name is David Archuleta

Sometimes the only way to keep something you treasure is to be willing to give it away.

Like PandasMama, I know the pain of having to let go of a son to the service. As I listened to David making his announcement, my heart cried “No…no…no” But from deeper inside a comforting calm came up. David knows Who he serves. It’s who he is. Like Abrra, I will wait.

The mantra, as always…..Trust the Archuleta. This decision could not have been an easy one for him and with all he has given of himself, respect for that decision is the very least we can give him in return. There is one very important factor that I feel is at play here, as well. David will be 21 next week. He has made it no secret that he would like to find a life partner, have children, make a family. It will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for him to do that if he keeps going down his current path. This mission and the subsequent break from celebrity may allow that to happen…..and that, along with him following his heart, makes me very happy Some things ARE more important than music..

    78 – Skydancer:

I think DA was touched by the absolutely amazing and spontaneous support and love he felt from the people there in Abravanel Hall tonight. It was instant and unconditional. It was amazing to be there. I cannot fully describe how it felt. Whatever response he may have thought he would get, I think the one he got was greater than he could have imagined.

It is one of those things that happens when you least expect it and if you had time to think about it, you might plan the “right” way to respond. But the people in the audience had no such preparation. DA knew this… so the “reply” he got to his announcement was all the more priceless.

I cried. So many of us did. And one hardly knew if it was for happiness or not. Just that it was extraordinary to the point of: “You have never held back, DA. We do not know all your private reasons why you are doing this and we do not need to. Your need to do it speaks so loudly, sincerely, calmly and deeply that we follow your inimitable talent for choosing – as we have followed before on much shorter journeys. Thinking each time that we were showing faith. Choosing short bridges rather than detours. Allowing for your growth (as we thought). And now, find ourselves following again. Applauding even as we cry that this bridge is not what we had expected or prepared ourselves for”.

    *sigh*

(Can’t really say when the last time was that one of my kids did something I was prepared for. ((*_*)) )

Trying to put my feelings into words but failing miserably. I won’t lie; I’m feeling very sad. But I’d like to think I can put my own hurt feelings aside. After watching David’s video I realize that this decision was not an easy one and I greatly admire his courage.

I am not going anywhere. For those wondering, this site will remain intact. David is so worth the two year wait. It’s the least I can do for all the joy he has brought into my life. Besides, he will probably write some awesome music while he’s away and we will have that and more to look forward to.

The question we don’t know is what will be the nature of his mission. A nontraditional one? A service mission? A door-to-door one? A two-year one? A half-year one? He had indicated (actually right in front of me!) that he had acting and writing/recording lined up in Jan. Feb. So is he recording a fourth album before he goes?

Many questions yet unanswered, and I hope he is prepared to answer them.

I don’t comment here often but read nearly everyday – Have really appreciated the comments tonight and how respectful they’ve been on this subject, even if you may not understand or feel happy about it. I am a member of his church, but still thought I would be sad if he decided to go – I was so surprised at how I felt when I watched that video of his announcement, the peaceful feeling that just washed over me and I knew that it is something that is right for David right now –

After the initial surge of celebrity died down after Crush and he seemed to be having a harder time breaking out of the teen idol image and getting played on the radio and his second album not being supported by his label I thought it would probably be good for him to leave for 2 years and come back more grown up – but seeing the way things have unfolded I really feel like he’s leaving at the right time. This mission is part of his foundation, I don’t think he was just talking about a musical foundation I think he meant his life’s foundation as well and for him he’s now decided that this mission is part of that. He will come back stronger and maybe the industry will be more accepting of him as a serious artist and not “that kid from idol”. (maybe “good” music will be more appreciated by then too).

Happy to hear that you will be here. We may get updates from family if they choose to share, part of me feels they just may do that a little. Maybe his Abuelita through fanscene. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see. I am surprised at how excited I feel for him.
