David Archuleta ~ Chapter 10: The Gift of Gratitude

Posted by djafan on Wednesday, November 23, 2011

By PaulaFOD/Staff Writer

“I sincerely appreciate all of the amazing things that have happened to me over the past few years.  I absolutely love singing and the opportunity it allows me to meet so many people and to share all those special feelings I’ve talked about earlier on, but I’m totally grateful every single day of my life for all the other less obvious blessings that have come my way.”
-David Archuleta, Chords of Strength, Chapter 10

On this Thanksgiving 2011, may we know what it means to be thankful every single day.  Thanksgiving is born from a grateful heart.  A grateful heart is born from the gift of gratitude.  The gift of gratitude is, well… a gift.  And a gift is….

“… a gift is something that passes from one hand to the next, as a gesture of goodwill, as an act of compassion and love.  “Talent” implies some degree of unique skill, whereas “gift” takes the simple description one step further and makes that talent something meaningful to share with the rest of the world.  Talent mostly serves the person who has it – but a gift, by definition, is something special to give and receive.”
-David Archuleta, Chords of Strength, Chapter, 10

On this Thanksgiving 2011, I am grateful for God’s gift of gratitude, grateful that He gave this gift to David, who in turn passed it to all of us in his music, his attitude, his joy.  I am grateful for all of you reading this, for all of the precious Archies that began as strangers and have become friends.  I am grateful that we, in turn, have passed this gift on in charity.  I am grateful for Rising Star Outreach, Children’s Miracle Network, Stand Up to Cancer, Jonah and the Bone Marrow Registry, Make-a-Wish, Invisible Children, Childfund, and others who, out of their own gratitude, work to meet the needs of others.  Like love, the gift of gratitude grows when it is shared.  It trickles through our fingers, but is never fully given away because the very nature of a grateful heart is to see more for which to be grateful.

Gratitude is joyful, but it also fills hard times with hope…

“Everyone knows that the human condition comes with all kinds of situations-the good, the bad and the ugly.  Pain and hardship are almost impossible to avoid….Rather than feeling sorry for ourselves when the chips are down, we should take stock of the things that we actually feel happy and grateful for….Without the struggle, we can’t really appreciate the joy when it comes.”
-David Archuleta, Chords of Strength, Chapter 10

On this Thanksgiving 2011, I am grateful for the way we support David and each other… in hard times and happy times.

“If I had to break it all down to answer the question of how I stay true, it always goes back to the simple things: happiness, giving, loving, and sharing.  Those are the things that are important, and everyone has different ways of finding them.  You might think that sounds oversimplified, but I believe that when we simplify, we make life that much easier to handle.  I think the way my life has unfolded has only helped me to see those simple little things much more clearly.  The whole fame and recognition game makes the really important things stand out in a way that shows me how meaningful they truly are.  I have a deeper sense of appreciation for the small things in life that maybe I took for granted before all of this happened.  I’m able to enjoy life’s little treats with a new point of view, one that’s largely shaped by gratitude.”
-David Archuleta, Chords of Strength, Chapter 10

On this Thanksgiving 2011, I am grateful for life’s little treats…may we never overlook them or forget the simple things.  May we remember that every day in 2011 is a day of Thanksgiving…and that 2012 will bring a new year of Thanksgiving.

And David…thank you for Chapter 10.  And for Christmas tour.  And for your music.  : )

That is such a beautiful message, Thank you for this perfect Thanksgiving post. I was just sitting here thinking about CFTH/2009 and how the 2 concerts in SLC changed me. I can’t put it into words except to say that those concerts gave me such peace, It was tangible and to this day I can access that during times when it is needed. Circumstances are such that I will be unable to attend a concert for this tour, but I am so grateful to David for the CFTH tour and know I will hear him sing those heartfelt Christmas songs again. I am thankful that I had that experience and hope and pray that others will experience the same with his MKOC tour. Jana~Oregon

I am trying to pack for a flight to Vegas for Thanksgiving with my son. Should have known it would be difficult to organize anything after being struck by the Archu-gaze yesterday. Just doing my best to cope.

While in Deseret book yesterday I noticed a plate with the words “LIFE is not waiting for the storm to pass, but learning to Dance in the Rain”. I remembered David had introduced us to this adage, but it seemed to reach out to me more this time around. I thought of all the people who dance in the rain. Instead of mourning the hardships, they celebrate the good stuff of life. Their positive attitude lifts us all. I bought the plate for my daughter who is a marvelous rain dancer.

Thanksgiving is a great time. Nothing makes us happier than being grateful for what we have and sharing with others. I am so thankful for David and all the loving people he surrounds us with, especially my Voice family.

    Happy Thanksgiving!!

I went searching for poetry regarding gratitude. This stood out, as it had me thinking about my own emotions. All the recent pouting I’ve been doing since my plan to attend David’s Stroudsburg concert has fell through.
I can’t think of anyone who lives their life with such love, grace and gratitude than David. With this wonderful post, (thanks Paula!), that has me thinking of all that I have. I consider myself very blessed.

Paula, what a lovely article for Thanksgiving. Those quotes from David are perfect, things that everyone should take to heart. He is grateful for his gift and appreciates all of the little things in life. This time of year really does bring home all the things we all have to be grateful for, not just the big things but the little things we take for granted every day.

One of those things is this wonderful site and everyone here who helps us to share our admiration and fascination for this wonderful young man, including all the lovely fans who comment and lurk here.

Chapter 10 was one of my favorite chapters in COS. I love how you incorporated sections of it in your article.

Here’s a new interview. It gets cut off at the end but it’s worth it to watch.

Paula, you have caused me to think even deeper about my holiday tomorrow. I’ve really been pondering Thanksgiving this year, and your article on gratitude has really increased mine. David’s example has really made us all think deeper and act more kind, and I, personally, have so much respect for him because of that.

My sister and I, and our husbands, will be with our parents tomorrow. Dad and Mom are in their 80’s and just didn’t want to fuss with going anywhere, so we are taking it to them. Our kids will all be away this year so it’s just our parents and us, in our childhood home. ♥♥♥

Paula, thank you for your article, its just perfect for Thanksgiving♥.. I have a t-shirt that says “Gratitude is an Attitude” (Think I got it a decade ago when I was into radio talk show host “Dr”.Laura’s books )
    ……..
As I was sitting here reading your article tonite, the phone rang and it was my 90 yr.old neighbor Millie who lives alone..She doesn’t usually call at 10pm, so I asked right away, are you ok?. She said “no, I have fallen and I am hurt” I am GRATEFUL I have keys to her house, as she does mine. I ran over in my jammies, got in,called where are you? and found her on the floor beside her walker in the kitchen. There was blood all over the floor, and the cabinets, and baseboard. I picked her up, a struggle for both of us, but got her in her walker seat.I cleaned her wounds, bandaged her up, got her into her bedroom, cleaned up all the blood, got her into her bed, all tucked in, with an ice pack for her hip,and sat with her for awhile till her sleepy pill kicked in.Then shut off lights, locked up, and now I am back here. I am so grateful she called me,so GRATEFUL I was home, and GRATEFUL she is ok.And so thankful she is my friend.♥
    what a night!

To bed now….Have a wonderful day tomorrow everyone!

Thank you Paula for this beautiful article. You and this article exemplify everything I love about David and his fanbase – some of the most loving, generous, talented, and grateful people in the world. I am so thankful I tuned in to a certain TV show on that one special night back in 2008. My world has never been the same since.

    Happy Thanksgiving Y’all!!!

(Wish me luck. We’re eating dinner at my sister-in-law’s house again this year. Never know what you might be served there. The meal is always more unusual than traditional. It has gotten better the last two years since she has decided to let her daughter’s cook. No matter what the food is like, we will all be thankful that the patriarch of the family, my father-in-law, Bill, will be with us again. He has survived a second surgery to remove more of his lungs due to cancer.)

A nineteen year old with such words of wisdom and understanding of the meaning of gratitude blow me away every time I read them (have read COS 4 times) I can perfectly understand Edith when she said David has been her idol for 70 years irregardless of it being a flub or it just may have been her soul speaking to his.

I give thanks to God for all the experiences in my life. I give thanks for and to my family. I give thanks to all of you who share and partake in this David fan world. And I give thanks to David for unknowingly bringing music back into my life.

Here is an article I wrote for the Voice last spring; https://thevoicedavidarchuleta.com/2010/04/27/an-attitude-of-gratitude/ about the power of gratitude.

Love to all of you for Thanksgiving. I am grateful for all the love and support you have sent my way this year as I walked “thru the fire and thru the flood.”I wish you all cheerful hearts filled with beautiful melodies or our favorite singer!

Man, I almost forgot…I woke up at 5:20 am this morning and was quite upset that I couldn’t get back to sleep (it’s a day off work, for heck sakes!). I pulled myself up and started to get the day going, turned the radio on and stared at myself in the mirror (bad news!). Then, at 5:35 am MST, I’m hearing the intro to “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas”. Yeppers, David (and Charice) sang to me this morning. Suddenly, I was quite glad that I couldn’t go back to sleep, and pulled the bed off my back. ♥♪♥♫

Just happy to report that Millie my neighbor is ok today, and will be with her brother and family for Thanksgiving as planned. They are coming to get her. She is amazing! She woke up stiff and sore, but didn’t even need help getting out of bed, or in getting ready for her day. Her kitchen floor is hard, ceramic tile. She raised her arms when she knew she was going down, to protect her head(sharp thinking and quick)and hence cut both her elbows when she hit the floor, and also her lower leg, and she will get that addressed tomorrow at her doctor..made her promise! Easy to tear your skin when you are 90 I told her it looked like a crime had taken place (last night), and she repiied,Oh MY it does! and you are cleaning up the evidence! I love her. Love you all,

AAAHHH!! Oh my word, oh my word, breathe…That adorable boy let me take my picture with him, which was quite fortunate because three girls later in line, they would no longer take pictures. I asked him if I could take a picture with him and he replied, “sure, of course!”. When Emily went to stand by him to take a picture, he gently grabbed her shoulder and told her that she could get in closer, and Sarah asked to shake his hand in which he did (she plans on marrying him someday). He signed our CD and addressed it to Sarah, Erica and Liz (my Mom)-David Archuleta. After we met him we just stood with our jaws hanging open about two feet away from him staring like creepy stalker fans as he signed autographs…we couldn’t force ourselves to leave for a good half hour afterwards because he was just such a pleasure to stare at. 🙂 And yes, we had to get a picture by the Escalade he rode in. How awesome was today?! Pretty dang awesome.

Thanks Erica for taking the time to blog about your visit with our guy at the Orem book signing. 😉

For some reason I just can’t get “Funeral potatoes” out of my mind. Why could that be … oh maybe because one David Archuleta mentioned them in just about EVERY interview he did this week.

What are funeral potatoes? The have their own Wiki:

Funeral potatoes are a traditional Latter-day Saint (Mormon) hotdish or casserole dish that originated in Utah, United States.

Funeral potatoes get their name from commonly being served as a side dish during traditional after-funeral dinners. Funeral potatoes are often served at social gatherings, such as potlucks, in Utah and other areas with a large Latter-day Saint population.

The dish usually consists of hash browns or cubed potatoes, cheese (cheddar or parmesan), onions, cream soup (chicken, mushroom, or celery) or a cream sauce, sour cream, and is topped with butter and corn flakes or crushed potato chips. Other variations include cubed baked ham, frozen peas, or broccoli florets.

During the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, one of the souvenirs included a pin featuring an image of funeral potatoes.

Nellie sent into us her mother’s recipe for funeral potatoes – a Thanksgiving favorite. I am all for buying a bag of hashbrowns instead of peeling and dicing all of those potatoes to mash

    Funeral Potatoes:

32 oz. bag frozen shredded hash browns
2 (10 3/4 oz.) can cream of chicken soup
    2 C. sour cream
    1 C. grated cheddar cheese
    1/2 C. butter melted
    1/2 C. chopped onion
    2 C. crushed corn flakes
    2 TBS. butter, melted

Put potatoes in a 9 x 13 greased pan. Combine soup, sour cream, cheese, the 1/2 C. melted butter & onions. Gently blend into potatoes. Combine the crushed corn flakes and @ TBS. melted butter. Sprinkle on top. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. (Note: she makes them without the cornflakes

Happy Thanksgiving to all! I was away all day at my in-laws for the holiday, two-hours of traveling time each way but so worth it. Getting together with family is what it’s all about especially on holidays. I knew this before but David reinforces it and for that I’m grateful.

Sky, You get the prize this Thanksgiving for taking good care of your neighbor when she really needed you! Kudos to you, my friend. Stand up and take a bow.

PaulaFOD Your article continues to inspire us every day. And the comments from so many today including PattiNC, Jans, Silverfox, Blueberry Ice, Ref, Tawna, Emifriend, Nancy, Betsy, Emmegirl, AF4L, HeidiJoy et al are inspirational as well.

Last chance to sign an online birthday for David. The more signatures the better. Reading through them just now I see so many names that are unfamiliar to me. David has so many fans! The messages are heartfelt. Sigh. He is so loved.

David Archuleta greets fans at Salt Lake Deseret Book
    ksl.com Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — Hundreds of happy David Archuleta fans lined up at the downtown Deseret Book for a CD signing Friday.

The former American Idol contestant has just released his 2010 Christmas Concert album with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Fans brought posters, CDs, DVDs and magazines for the artist to sign.

Archuleta said he has spent the majority of this year in Los Angeles but is really happy to be home, at least for a little while.

“It’s great ot be able to come home, relax, spend time with family, (and) just enjoy the peace that’s here,” Archuleta said.

But he doesn’t have long to rest. Archuleta’s My Kind of Christmas Tour kicks off Dec. 1 in Westbury, New York.

  72. Ok, so I stumbled upon another CASBAA footage of David’s epic acoustic performance in HD – don’t ask me how I found it cos at times I also can’t believe my luck! I was doing research project on communication in Asia – totally David-UNrelated, when I saw some curious possibilities in a government site 😉

Anw, ’twas a HUGE file- was uploading since yesterday! It comes from CAM #2 which has some funny shots – you’ll see. But what I love about it, apart from not having skips or lags – the audio clearly captures the audience reaction which we did not get from the live streamed version.

DAVID UNPLUGGED IN CASBAA HK SHOT FROM CAM #2 – HD, GREAT AUDIO, NO LAGS, NO SKIPS! (28:49 MINUTES)

Be sure to download the MP3HD which I included in the description box and tweeted earlier – great way to beat traffic and nice addition to Abrra’s Candy Jar :).

I bet an HD vid combo of cam#1 and cam#2 is lying there somewhere… hmmmm…..

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving celebration!

Those Asian tour behind the scenes videos are really nicely done. Glad to see this kind of stuff on OS! So cute (in the Manila one, I believe) a group of teen girls, some giving the peace sign and the others with their hand on their chin, ala D, lol! And that interview with the dj’s in the Kuala Lumpur vid is priceless!
