David Archuleta ~ The Rush of Crush

Posted by djafan on Monday, August 1, 2011

It was Friday, August 1, 2008. I had the day off. I set the alarm for 5am and sprinted to my computer. This surprised me as I was unaware that I could still sprint. hah! Strapped on my headphones and away yay yay I whooshed! It was an exhilarating experience, watching his reaction to the plaintive cries of his first-born. I listened to this on repeat so many times my satellite provider cut me off for 24 hours! Say what? It hurt too. The shock to my system almost sent me into ODD DT’s. Not pretty. Needless to say, I quickly switched to High Speed DSL after that. But it was all worth it. Witnessing his profound joy was one of the sweetest moments ever.

Still have a crush on that song. When it first came out, I wrote these words. The songwriters were Emanuel Kiriakou, Jess Cates, and David Hodges. ♥

“Why is it that, though I have and love all of David’s songs, I only rarely play any of them more than once, but with Crush I have to keep hitting replay over and over? My thoughts were that it is a really complex work with so many emotions: longing, doubt, fear, frustration, anger, passion, love and yes, even the first stirrings of sexual desire. It hooks you with a moan and then his vocals start off so soft, “What a rush”. Then they get sharp and full of angst with, “Why do I keep running from the truth”. Then comes that love call that on the second refrain seems to reach out across time and space, “I just got to know!!”  He becomes everyone who ever loved and aches to know if their love will be returned. Then the gorgeous layering vocals and it ends on the yay, yay, yay, as if to tell us he’s just another 17 year old and this is really just another light contemporary pop song.
Right. And I’m the Queen of England.”

I also remember getting up early that morning to listen to Crush…watching David react was priceless!! I’m sure it was such a surreal experience for him. I love Crush even more now, because, as is usually the case, Crush LIVE is amazing. I just watched the video up above from Indonesia, (still trying to get caught up!), what a great ending w/ fireworks. Asia really treated David like he deserves to be treated…like a star! Happy Crushversary David!!

Angelica – another great post – thankfully you have the ability to put my feelings into words – perfectly! I will always remember that morning. I put on my heard phones anxiously waiting to hear Crush and see David’s reaction – which was priceless – when hubby (who likes David’s voice, but no way shares my ODD) says to me, “Well, I want to hear it too!” hahaha – so we listened together. Was it really three years ago!?

Awww so sweet. I was there at Ford Day when he sang it live for the 1st time! Listen to how much higher his speaking voice was:

Just watched and listened to all of them including the one you added FG of Ford Day. I remember those first listens and being nervous for David and how well he has done all along and now Fireworks and the Encore song of every concert. So thrilling each and every time.
Love this Journey we are on with David and each other!!

    Ahhhh Crush.
My memories of that day are not very clear. I know I didn’t get up early to watch. I may have been working. I DO remember watching the radio video at some point that day.
    Remember this?

  9. Angelica, what a wonderful tribute to David this morning and we all share in the memories with him!!

Angelica, What a wonderful stroll down memory lane. That Z100 video actually brought tears to my eyes. Such a sweet and touching moment in time that will stay with him forever.

I remember that day so well and remember watching all those videos, including the one Betsy posted in #8. When I listen to him saying that it might just last a year or two … well, I’m so glad he is three years in and still going strong, more determined than ever to build a lasting career.

David, I hope it lasts forever, cuz …
“I know this Crush ain’t goin awayyyyyyy!!” ♥

We are with you all the way.

Three years!! Wow, time has been amazing for David and his career. 🙂 Thanks, Angelica, for the memory stimulating vids and thoughts this morning. I still find myself cranking the volume up when Crush comes on the radio. It makes my David pride elevate a few more notches each time I hear it.♥♥

Lovin’ David a bit more today!

  12. dakgal said

    Angelica–Thanks once again!!

I’m with Betsy-I really don’t recall if I watched it live or later–back then what I knew about a computer –you could put in a thimble. I’m a little better now -thanks to the great and patient help I have gotten from my hero Abrra.

I could write a book about your article—(relax , I won’t ) -he was so crazy nervous and excited that day–it just made you fall deeper in love with him!

The ” Little Song That Could” Sure did!!! I have often wondered just how many times he has sang ( sung?) ” Crush”.

As you say Angelica ” winner and still champion” and I wish with all that’s in me he has many, many more!

  13. Marylee said

♫What a rush♫… indeed! This song will forever be etched in my head/heart & I’ll never forget sitting at my computer literally feeling what he was feeling releasing that unforgettable song to the airwaves for the very first time~goosebumps galore! & yes..I played it over & over again because I just couldn’t get enough! What a journey this past 3 years has been & I thank you David for every single breathtaking moment! ♥

Brought this over from last thread from Gladys who is very observant 🙂

I know this video was seen many times, but the minute 2.39, david has such mastery of their music is amazing.

Z100 is my local radio station so of course I woke up early that day to listen on radio and watch the video on youtube. I’m so not a morning person but the thought of hearing David on radio erased all morning grumpiness and brought a huge smile to my face as it did just now when I watched the Z100 video again. He was nervous about how it would sound but we all knew it would be wonderful! I remember keeping a close watch on radio after that in the hopes of hearing Crush again. The first time I heard it on radio I was in a car packed full of people. I made everyone stop talking so we could all hear the song.

Congratulations to David and “Crush” on this three-year anniversary. It’s hard to believe that three years have passed since the day it premiered, since AI7 and since we all gathered together in this fandom. I can barely remember my life before this.

Oh Angelica! Love this article and the videos and memories. I don’t remember the sequence of events, but I remember this moment we waited for, arriving! I recall setting my alarm, to be sure to be awake, and watching so nervously you would think it was my song about to debut. ahh those now so familiar, butterfies in the tummy.Oh David! It was such a proud and wonderful day for us as fans!!
l absolutely love this line angelica.
“It was an exhilarating experience, watching his reaction to the plaintive cries of his first-born.” ♥

He is always ahead of the music, while singing with perfect precision, ferociously ,in the moment, each note. How does he do that? how did I say that? I don’t even know what I said but I am leaving it right here. He is such a genius,he messes me up and baffles me.that is what I want to say….wavin’ that microphone around like that….

Holy microphone Batman!! He’s sooo into this song-he just lets himself go loosey-goosey and bossy—–COME ON YOU GUYS—-SING IT!!!! and boy -do they!

That is what we need to do over here–all out –no holds barred participation with him, because he feeds off it so dang well. What’s wrong with us–that we are afraid to show him our love openly and without abandon and sing our lungs out–who cares if someone looks at you like you’ve lost it- let ‘um get with it.

Sky # 16—OMG was that your brain? I thought it was an old chewed up wad of gum and threw it away. 🙄 But. that’s OK because lovin David is a no brainier–join the club!!

I never noticed that move with the mic! He’s a maniac!!! What in the world are we going to do with him?

    Sky #25,

You mean this old look? I screen capped that a long time back.

BTW, you and Dak are once again cracking me up!

#30 That is just precious. 🙂

  37. stenocruiser said

Angelica, loved your retrospective on that momentous “Crush Day”. I too was up early to catch the music, the song, the debut, David’s reaction to hearing ‘his baby’ played for the first time. I was in tears watching his joy and I couldn’t help wishing his Mom was there to give him a well-deserved hug.

  38. Abrra said

#30 is a fake 🙂 Photo shopped all the way.

    That is all!

  39. stenocruiser said

Really, Abrra — we’ve all been taken in? You must have a good eye — kudos to you.

  40. MT said

    38. Abrra, lol That would explain a few odd things in that pic.

  41. dakgal said

I was once sucked in by a waaay faker picture than this-much to my embarrassment— but I’m such a gullible dork–it’s understandable.

SoooI want to know –what was the giveaway–what odd things?

It’s like playing -what doesn’t belong in this picture–And no abs I haven’t bought any swamp land —-yet!!

PS –Isn’t that a recent shirt? or did they dress David too? or is that David? I think I’d know that body anywhere–maybe.

I really don’t care for the other two people in the picture–so why would do people do things like this anyhoo?

  42. Abrra said

Look how the girls head and the black man’s head are tilted in an unnatural pose? The girl’s sleeve is brown on David’s shoulder yet its purple on her chest.

Worst cut and paste ever LOL

They took a whole body pic of David and pasted it next to her. Look at the blurry edge near his armpit where they pasted him into the composition.

Was this the same guy who did that freak out video over one of David’s songs? I don’t recall what song, just was a black guy OTT about David’s music.

  43. Angelica said

    What makes you think that?

  44. Abrra said

Just an educated guess 🙂 Looks so fake. Details blurry and off color. Hands look like man hands on the girl. Awkward head positions.

He wore those clothes in Manila at a M&G.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

  45. MT said

Dak, “It’s like playing -what doesn’t belong in this picture”

    Can I play?

Abrra, also, Jeanette’s neck looks odd, like it’s her head and someone else’s body. And the arm around David doesn’t look like it belongs to anyone in the pic. And does he have an extra bend in his left elbow?

And if it turns out later that this is real, I’m gonna know I’ve had to much coffee and my imagination is running away with me. lol

  46. dakgal said

MT #45—eeew— David’s arm does look distorted—But Jenette always has held her neck oddly — like crick in her neck , IMO.

I agree with the hands looking like –well–not a girls— where’s the manicure?–very very odd picture.

All of the sudden I’m a flamin expert–haha—-So MT the next time a pic comes along we’ll ” play the game”

  47. Angelica said

Still not convinced. This guy is a regular actor on icarly. None of his other photos are shopped from

    Whatever. Still precious.

  48. dakgal said

Well, this ( ahem) expert is out of the debate. All I hope for is that David gets his arm fixed—maybe he threw it out of joint with the microphone move!!

  49. MT said

    48. Dak, hahahahaha

It could be totally legit and just blurry, or totally photo shopped. IDK but it was fun playing.

And I agree with Agelica, either way it’s precious. I love seeing those two together.

  50. Angelica said

Dak, LMBO!!! From the way he was whipping it, I could see how that might happen! If I tried that move, I would have to undergo a closed reduction of the shoulder and elbow under anesthesia, followed by 6 weeks of therapy. 😆

Anyway, forget that pic. LOOK AT THESE FROM NAREE!

  51. Angelica said

“Life is not about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself.”

  52. tawna21 said

Angelica!! #50 Now them there pics are for realz!! How can a person go to bed and expect to sleep with that vision swirling in one’s head?!! **dies**

  53. dakgal said

OUCH!!!—now those pictures actually hurt–don’t ask me why–they just do!! There just is NO mercy. No photo shopping ( chopping or grinding ) or what ever you call it here–just pure eye candy.

Do you suppose that pic #3 could be the microphone whip –caught in the act of happening?

Looks like a hyper extended arm to me–but he certainly is enjoying it.

  54. dakgal said

And one more thing—It’s a crying shame that your face doesn’t show any emotion when you are singing–you must work on that–that is if you want to send me to an early grave. 😯

  55. vlm said

Angelica, it was so good to go through the “old” videos of David! Thanks for posting!
Everytime I hear Crush, I get the same feeling I did when I first heard it. Will never forget that day, was so happy for David. Even happier today for him with all the “goodies” happening.
#30…I thought Jeannette’s head looked funny, but I never thought of photo shopped. Duh!!!
The last 4 days I have been at my son’s down in Rockwall, TX. When Shopping with DIL at Bath an Body Works, TOSOD came on and it was so good to hear David singing in a public place! DIL was on her cell and I kept saying “that’s David, that’s David singing The Other Side of Down!” I know I sounded like an idiot, but I couldn’t help it! Hearing him in public makes me all giddy and happy!!
And when I got home, I had rec’d my new album with the new songs and have been playing them over and over. Good stuff!
    #59…that is so funny…..hadn’t seen it before…

  64. bebereader said

    Betsy#59 I remember that! Hilarious!

Jan#63, I noticed that some places play pre-packaged music now and I’ve heard songs from TOSOD in restaurants like Ruby Tuesday and also while walking through a mall. And now you heard it at Bath & Body Works. Must be a new trend to play a specific style of music instead of the radio. I have to say that I like it! 🙂

  65. betsy said

Jan, I love that! Isn’t it so exciting to hear his music in public places? I heard Falling Stars in Ruby Tuesdays last January. I was sitting with about 20 people for my sister’s birthday party. Calm on the outside, tweeting about hearing the song under the table. 🙂
My store did a poll on facebook – what is your favorite music type thing. Of course I did my part. (Clearly they didn’t hear me) Today the results came out and John Lennon’s Imagine will be added into the mix. Although his version is pretty good too. 🙂

Happy 3rd Anniversary Crush. How many hundreds of times have each of us played and listened to it. My stomach was in knots that morning. I was up at the crack of dawn with everyone else scared to death I would miss it. It was the only song I listened to for weeks. Could not get enough of the voice.

Betsy, #59, cracked me up then, still does.

    love. the. quote.

30 people. secret performance. how bout a lottery David.

    hehe Emmegirl…a lottery…great idea!

I came across a new set of videos posted for the Malaysia show for anyone who wants to sit back and let The Voice entertain you tonight if you’re still up. Very clear sound and closeup. It’s a play list and the songs are connected so sit back and enjoy. It starts with Stomping The Roses. Credit to Cookie251975
The video gets clear at :44.

Regarding the playlist link in comment #67, I noticed there were a few videos thrown in there that weren’t from David’s show. hehe You’ll see what I mean if you watch long enough. Follow the videos at the bottom of the youtube page. Only #9 – #23 are from David’s Malaysia show.

bebe–in saving that playlist to my playlist I was able to edit it and get rid of the other songs–’bout jolted me out of my chair when the first one came blasting on. haha It’s all good now tho’. Maybe one of you could do a mp3 of this one so it’s one continuous play.

67, Bebe, thanks for the musical nightcap! Those are good vids.
Don’t know why but I found myself totally mesmerized tonite by Davids beautiful hands, during “Love Don’t Hate” try watching that one again, looking at nothing else but his hands ( full screen). They are a show in themselves during that song.

I found another video, david is synchronized perfectly with his band, but there is something else, now leads. Look at his body, moves to accompany the drums and then asking more rhythm with his hand making a turn in the air, start at minute 1.15
    ¿¿I’m exaggerating?
