David Archuleta ~ Studio Recording VS Live Performance

Once upon a time, bands recorded their music in a studio with all members playing at the same time. I remember watching TV specials about it and admiring the patience it must have taken to keep doing it over and over until they got it right. I also remember buying recordings of live performances.
Live performances have an element that cannot be duplicated in a sound booth. The band and the live audience add another dimension to the performance and enhance it. Many fans have remarked on this very thing in regards to David. David’s live performance of his music is on a whole other level. David becomes more playful with the song, incorporating runs and licks whenever he feels like it, or adding a little attitude to it. He also pushes himself and has more power in his vocals. I find that the result is a song that is more emotional and more powerful, less controlled.
In David’s vlog entitled “Alaska,” he mentions that he is getting back into the studio and has to focus on singing a different way, with a different vibe, that he has to get back into that “mode” of singing in a recording studio. In what way does he sing differently? Why does he sing differently?
This got me thinking about the different methods of recording and wondering if David has ever considered trying something a little different. Of course, there is no way to get the feel of a live audience in a studio (we wouldn’t all fit!) but there could be another option, recording with a full band in the studio the way it was done before digital layering of recordings was the norm.
These days, most often, songs are recorded in layers, which are added one piece at a time. The artist may not know what the finished record will sound like when doing vocals for his own song. In the days before computerized layering, groups wrote a song, then they rehearsed it many times before attempting to record it. It gave them a chance to play with it, to do it over and over to see how they could make it better.
I think we’ve all seen how David does this during a tour. After performing it several times, he begins adding things to it that make it better and better. The more he performs a song, the better it gets. One fine example of how this might turn out is David’s performance of “My Hands” from Providence. This song is lovely on the original studio recording, but it is stunning in the live performance. Once you get past the first 10 seconds where David is smiling at the audience and are able to wipe the smile off your face, pay close attention to this performance and really listen. You’ll see what I mean. (Then again, you probably already know what’s coming. 🙂

Let’s be honest. How many of us can name a few live performance vocals that we prefer to the original album version? I know I have one or two.
In this day and age, live recording does pose a problem. Would it be possible to record a song live in concert, put if up for sale, and make a profit from it once it has been performed live? No matter how many signs they post at a concert that say “No Recording Devices Allowed,” we know some ninja Archie will post a recording of that song. So I’m not sure that would work.
But, if a new song was written and it was only performed during band rehearsals, and practiced many times, I think he would be refining it as he goes along, just the way he does on tour. By the time he records it, we would have a really well developed version of the original. The result would be something similar to a live performance, particularly if it were recorded with the whole band.
We know David feeds off the energy of an audience, but doesn’t he get some of that energy from the band as well? We’ve all seen the difference between his performances with a full band and his acoustic performances. To me, there is a marked difference, the one with a full band being a much more high-energy performance. Could recording his music in a studio with all members playing allow him to feed off of their energy and achieve a similar result? Could this be a way to capture some of the magic that David has on stage during live performances?
Now that David has a full-time band that he’s rehearsing with on a regular basis, it is something that could be done. Would it be more costly? Maybe. Would the resulting music be stronger, richer, and more full-bodied? Probably. While recording with the band, he would be able to play with the various elements of a song just the way he does in rehearsal, tweaking it as he goes along until the resulting recording has a sound that feels right to him. It may be a slightly old fashion method of recording, but it’s one that worked for many, many years.
Not many artists could do live performance recordings these days. Most artists’ voices don’t lend themselves to live recording. Too many pitch problems and too much auto-tuning. David is one of the few exceptions. In his live performances his voice is front and center, powerful and on pitch throughout, even while improvising on the end of the song.
David’s gift of improvisation has brought us some amazing fan videos of his live performances. Now that he has assembled a group of musicians that are on a par with his ability to improvise, the resulting recordings, live or as a group in the studio, might well produce some truly incredible music.

The cost of recording in studio with a full band might just be too much at this point. The success of a CD relies heavily on how the instruments and voices are mixed. I am a fan of live performances by David over studio. The improv he brings is the best part!

A live album from him would be a dream come true. Back in the 70’s, this was done quite a bit. Some of the first albums that I bought were live, recorded at concerts, specifically for that purpose.
These were two of my favorites:
Frampton Comes Alive and Bob Seger Live Bullet.
Am I crazy or wasn’t a video done in Tribeca that went along with his EP fan pack? I know I bought it. Can’t find it though. Live version of Angels with the crowd sounds muted. Not completely muted, just enough to hear his beautiful voice. My son explained how it was recorded easily. A live concert cd would be something perfect.

The video you are thinking of was from Z100. There was an EP with Angels,ZG,and ATM, I think? Not sure it had video.The show was at P.C. Richards theater in NYC I had a chance to go but travel did not work out /cry

great job!
It was only after seeing David perform LIVE that I realized his first cd , had lost some of the magic it had for me before seeing him. Am I making sense?. Don’t get me wrong, it was, and is still wonderful to listen to, but much prefer the mp3’s of his live performances that Abrra has in her ever growing candy jar!.
The excitement David creates on the stage…well, we all concur there is nothing like it. Maybe because he is such a visual performance artist. I mean, watching him up there, whether its from a big screen, or up close, if you are just present you really feel that voice, it just passes right through you and out the other side (chills just thinking about it) and the love he puts into his music , you can just feel it. and see it.

MT what interesting thoughts and information this morning. I’ve, also, wondered what a cd of live in the studio w/David would be like. Like Sky (#6), after David’s solo tour of his first cd, I just couldn’t get into the songs from the studio the way I had before. I remember when I put it on the morning after his concert is SLC, I was heartbroken that it was so different in it’s sounds. I’ve come thru that some, but still prefer a live sound. But, I’ll take David’s music however I can get it–concert live, canned live, or just canned. Nothing, absolutely nothing, tops his sounds and delivery.

Thank you for a most informative, well-researched article. David is one of the only performers who sounds better live than on a pre-recorded cd. That’s why his first cd sounds so ‘different’ when you listen to it after seeing him live or watching tour videos on youtube. He’s improved upon those songs over and over, since he recorded that cd three years ago.

BUT, he doesn’t SANG the song the way he does for an audience. He must not get that down to the bones –tingly feeling– the chance to off somewhere ( that only he knows where) and get lost in the song and do whatever comes to him.

I’m wondering if professionally videoed concerts have a way of blocking out the screaming and yelling that is so distracting from the sound in amateur videos. I want to hear the Voice loud and clear.
Also –off topic–but I would like to thank Skydancer and Angelica for my dream ( or nightmare) last night. Of all the things I read last night in The Voice before going to bed about our guy–videos, news about Malaysia–the ” hang on by your fingernails pictures”————What do I dream about!!!——- 😯
CATS!!!!!!– :?– It seems someone brought a kitten into the house and Angelicas “Evil Cat” or Skys ” Damien” got a hold of it by the neck and dragged it under a bed-where nobody was brave enough go to the rescue. And all I could do was yell–“-Who let that kitten in here!!”
Then I woke up—traumatized. Took me a pot of coffee to calm down.

Yes there is. My son loves sound editing and has taken many classes in this. It’s what they probably did in the #4 video. It’s too complicated for me to remember what he said. (he says it’s simple) I am sooo not able to take in technical info and relay it (or even remember it, lol)

20 minutes ago, I left a message for my daughters “friend” who gave her Damien for Valentines Day.(who DOES that!?) It was, “This is not working out, you need to come and get the cat”.
My daughter left for a trip this week, and I have been here playing musical cats. 2 in 1out, 1 in 2 out, closed doors, open doors, doors to keep them from one another. who is where? No No NO I am losing my ever-lovin’ mind.
Damien must be banished. he got to my oldest cat this morning, and it was not pretty. a mass of fur flying and all she was doing was sleeping.It was not play.
He has to go. I tried. This cat needs an exorcist.

Being on stage DOES something to David. There’s a vibrancy, an electricity, that extra OOMPH, that isn’t in the studio recordings.

Seeing the control room – gives you a glimpse of what a production it is to record a concert live.
In one of the songs, I think it was “In Her Eyes”, Josh even starts at the top of the arena and sings the song as he walks through the crowd back down to the stage.

But, now that I think about it, even just rehearsing with the band BEFORE recording might have a similar effect, giving him time to play with the song the way he does in concert. Maybe give him a different take on the songs. (just a random thought haha)

That would depend on what they were trying to achieve .
A loosely produced “live” concert CD or a “live in studio” sound CD. The former might be less costly, but the latter would cost much more. To have musicians sitting around while the sound engineer decided if they have a “good take” is far more costly than having them come in and play their instruments against a track of the others. Then have the sound mixer blend the whole thing with the vocals.

I remember that though. On the Christmas album, I like how it sounded, but then it WAS Christmas songs. TOSOD, once again songs we were not familiar with so it was great. That was more “David” in the lyrics, but he has still improved on all those songs too, in that special way he can only do in front of an audience giving his all to performances no matter how big or small. David David David, what are we to do with you? :))
Face it, he leaves every bit of himself ,on every stage he is on. Can’t capture that in a recording studio. Bebe, we’ll have to go in. : )

This is from Wiki. It is about the American rock band Phish and their concert recording policy. Here it is done by the fans. Somehow, I believe there is a way to do this and then have it posted on-line for peeps to pay a small fee to watch and listen. Why not? Every DA concert is different. It is one of the things I love about him. The sweet surprise. (think somebody used that line once….)
Anyway, it was fun for me to know at least that there are other policies out there. Technology is changing so fast. I just think that there are ways for him to profit from all this if it can be looked at with new eyes.

16. Abrra, you could be right about the cost of recording with the whole band. Maybe live would be a better option, cost wise. Another thought was that he could just rehearse, and practice, new material with the band BEFORE recording instead of afterward. It might give him the opportunity to put his own “spin” on the songs and have a chance to adapt them, making them more “him”, before they are recorded.

I find this an interesting way to encourage fans to attend concerts. Afterwards, they have free MP3s of the concert they attended!
I think that to have their memories, the music they heard at their concert, free as a souvenier, is a very interesting promotional concept since not all fans record concerts. Some prefer to just soak in the atmosphere and enjoy it.

So much to think on in your article. I really love the idea of David doing a live album one day of one or more or all of his concerts. hah. I can dream, can’t I? There is just something so powerful and alive about his take on the songs in a live performance. He receives the energy and love from the crowd and gives it right back and it’s like he’s singing with his whole body and soul. As good as the studio cuts are, there is no surpassing him live. I think many of us have experienced that lack of something vital and immediate on the albums after hearing him in person or recorded in concert. You ask, “In what way does he sing differently? Why does he sing differently?” For me it’s that he sings with so much more passion live. It’s that emotional connection he gets from the audience that charges, invigorates and animates his live performances. That’s what is missing from the studio that you don’t notice until you hear the thing live-born and howling or growling on stage. The passion. What would be wonderful is if someone could get him to find within himself a way to recreate what he feels on stage and bring that voice into the studio. I hope someday he will find a way to do that. I think he already believes he is capable of it to some extent by feeding off the vibe of the band he has now. In the band auditions vlog he spoke about getting the right “chemistry” and “feel” with them so that he can, “feel inspired with the people I’m working with on stage.” So hoping for lots of sweet inspiration coming our way!

So much technology nowadays that I think just about anything is possible. You’ve done written a great article and really enjoyed all the information you gathered.
How to capture that beautiful sound that comes from David and distribute out to the world. It has to happen, it just has to. I love his music, I love listening to his albums but nothing compares to live David, heart, body, and soul. I wonder if he knows this, we somehow must let him know we want a live DVD.

I missed the twitter party! It had been a while since he had one and last night and today he trended in Malaysia, so many tweets in Asian languages. LOL You said in two sentences what it took me a whole article to say. Yes, that’s exactly what I’m hoping he will find, whether it’s recorded live, with a band, or by himself after practicing with the band. I’m hoping that he finds a way to capture what we hear and put it on a CD so the whole world can feel the magic of David’s beautiful voice.

So David’s still in Nashville, per one of his reply tweets. Sounds like he’s really enjoying himself. I still wouldn’t be surprised if he made Nashville his permanent residence one day or one of his residences. The vibe seems to suit him. He sounds better than ever on his tweets, exercising, watching basketball, drinking juices, going to outdoor concerts. It’s more an intuitive feeling I have rather than anything substantial he said.
Speaking of live albums, they are truly my favorite type of album to buy. A friend of mine once questioned why I bought so many live albums. I told her that I’m addicted to the energy of both the crowd and the artist and that hearing it happen in ‘real’ time is exhilarating. I also like hearing the banter in between songs. My friend disagreed with me; she preferred hearing the songs the way they were recorded, in their purest form. But that was pre-David Archuleta, of course. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE, live concert DVDs. I have a small collection of them that I rarely watch anymore because I’m waiting to add “David Archuleta LIVE” to the list. For now, the MoTab DVD will be the closest thing and I’m ready and waiting!

Probably her fav performance ever on idol of Imagine. Guess she’s making rounds in support of her album or single/video release.

It is true that live music is just that and brings to each of us the performer’s on stage emotions. Performers such as David make you a part of the song in some way even if it is merely his smile at the end. Recorded music can’t compare to being there with David and joining him in his song fest. Each audience in turn produces a different response and with David if he wants more intensity he asks for it and the audience delivers. The live vibes he gives you that stay with you for days after a concert just can’t quite transmit to you through a CD.

Hi all,
It looks like I have may have triggered cat stories,,, the good, the bad and the ugly (Oh yes). Thought I would give you a cat update.
In short, my daughter’s Beloved Cat got out of her new apartment Friday night while the movers were working. She has used all your suggestions with no success, yet. Funny happening: Using a live trap, she excitedly saw the door was down on Sunday morning. They had trapped a very, shall we say, ANGRY,enormous black cat. (I think Angelica posted a picture of him a few months ago). They used a stick to dislodge him and ran for their lives when cat came barreling out!
Next try is So LA area, but cool. A woman and her blood hound track pets for people with quite a good success rate. She can at least, give you an idea of which way he went so you can put a live trap out and perhaps catch someone you want to keep. Please keep your fingers crossed. This is not a Damien,,, this is a Darling. 🙂

I read most of Yvette ‘s 4 th installment . The girl is a very detailed writer for sure. She learned to not look directly into David’s eyes or risk the mind wipe effect! I had a laugh when I saw the picture of him with the 5 girls. By the look in all the eyes, they all had a mind wipe , even David! Nice to see him with fans wherever he goes. It’s good for the soul to be appreciated.
Meetings….. I have to say it must be in preparation for this Asia tour. He will most likely have a ton of publicity stops while over there. Planning is key to a successful visit. It makes me happy that David will be going to a place that plays his songs on the radio. There is a genuine love for him as an artist and a person. The last time he went, he had to share the limelight with Cook . This time he will be treated like “Elvis ” royalty !
Would love to hear about the pre visit buzz from some of our Indonesian fans who listen to the stations that play David’s music .

MT, great article. So true about the “live” David. One of my favorite live performances was oddly at the Las Vegas book signing last summer, when he did an impromptu performance of Angels. I knew his AI version and his album version by heart, and had seen soooo many videos of other performances that blew me away, but being there and listening to him live totally blew everything else out of the water! It literally took my breath away! Later, when I pulled it up on youtube, it was still amazing, but the video was only able to capture a fraction of the power.
It made me think of that fateful night 3 years ago when Simon declared David’s finale performance a knock out, and later back pedaled after viewing the video.
No question, David is at his best live…he truly feeds off the audience and they off him. It’s like a big share-fest!

The fact that David is so much better live than in the studio or even on video makes me wonder how much more incredible that finale night was for the people that were there at the Nokia Theater, because the broadcast (as we know) was amazing.

Unfortunately “The Voice” in conversation is the reality show by the same name. We have a long summer ahead at this pace. Come on entertainment people of America pull yourselves together and request David to perform a concert or two. Honest, we will fill the place, any place.
Yes 1/2 hour or so in Provo and around the world in Asia but that is not quite what many thousands of us in this part of the world have in mind. Maybe he could be on television, on radio or on stage? Not a tour, just a concert or two.
It’s not patience that we need but just one organizer, one fantastic person to think that it is a wonderful idea to have “David Archuleta and his Band” perform for North Americans.
David has dreams of things to happen and so should we.

Well Dak,
This morning my daughter got two calls. One was from a man who found her “lost” ad on Craig’s List (Yay, Craig’s list). It seems Taffy had his fill of being lost and late last night went up to this man’s house and banged on the door to come in. Thru barking dog inside, he continued to bang on the door. This was surprising because he is an indoor cat and we didn’t know he knew to do that. Kind man in the house took him in, looked on Craig’s List and locked him in the sunroom, where Taffy proceeded to howl all night. Kind man called daughter at 6:00 this a.m. and she raced the couple blocks and sobbingly carried him home.
Later in the a.m. she got another call from a guy who said Taffy had been waundering around for a few days in that area. In fact, he saw him beat up a dog that tried to bother him. Why this guy finally called, or didn’t call a couple days ago, I don’t know.
Thank you all for your caring words. It was really nice to be able to share our “family” trauma, and really awesome for me to share the happy ending. You are all great. Thank you.

As for those 2 songs, we helped produce them, but they were never picked up by his record label (sad… because they were really well-written by David himself.) They were catchier than most of the songs that ended up on the album. But oh well. Maybe one day… we’ll keep pushing and promoting these songs for David.
This must have been during the Jive era. I could imagine what David went through to do this project during Jive’s attempt to beiberize him.. So glad he dumped Jive.

He is actually now with my daughters boy-friend, who lives right here in the neighborhood about 6 blocks away,with his aunt, who has 2 dogs(small and medium sized.) and 2 children. He will probably do much better in a testosterone filled household.
He is being well taken care of.
The cat fight was bad. My 13 year old cat ,so docile and sweet, didn’t have a chance, he snuck in,so fast, I did not see him and jumped her when she was sleeping poor thing.he was not playing around. Scared the heck out of me. when I finally freed her, she ran, and he took her down again, then went for me scratching and biting me. Time to go. time to put foot down. My girlie house is not for him.Daughter can walk down the street and visit him any time she wishes♥

Thank you for the article. I day dream a lot and have often dreamed of David’s concert voice playing in my mind. I’ve also been dreaming of David doing a tour here at home. David and his team have so much to consider. For example, if David picked 10 cities to tour, there would be 10! or 3,628,800 possible ways to schedule such a tour. I remember when the fans were asked where we thought David should tour. If only 10 of his fans responded with 10 different responses and one choice from each fan was to be picked, this would present 10 to the 10th power or ten billion possibilities to consider (and no label to work with). Though the possibilities are mind blowing, I keep hoping for a tour.

Then I started thinking that he has the State of Montana tweeting him.

Steven Robinson is such a tease but he is also a man of his word. If he says that we are not ready, he’s probably right! *shudders* I enjoy the open communication he has with the fans (who he calls ‘the family’) on Twitter. Whether he realizes it or not, he is the liaison between David and the fans. If you follow his twitter page closely. (http://twitter.com/StevenJRob) you’ll see that the fans spill to him what the would like David to sing, to wear, to hum etc. Steven has become to ‘go to’ guy.

I missed hearing the unreleased songs from last night, but it pleased me that they were removed from the choir site asap. I was surprised that they were made available such as they were. David misses the chance to market songs the way he chooses when mp3’s of his studio performances are made public. It’s just too easy to copy and download them. Sharing his concert “live” performances via youtube is a blessing to fans. We are all anticipating the Asian tour videos!
I was inspired by a video from (yes, again) Myrtle Beach. I liked the ethereal quality of the video. It had a dreamy background and softness that made David look awesome.

‘American Idol’ sensation David Archuleta will be making his way back to Malaysia thanks to the ardent requests of all his fans here. This time round though, David won’t be playing a simple showcase- he’ll be going all the way with a full concert at Stadium Negara this 26th July! The 20 year old’s second album dropped last October and has already taken control of the airwaves with songs like ‘Something Bout Love’ and ‘Elevator’, which we know his fans are dying to hear live.
All ArchAngels can head on down to Berjaya Times Square on 19th June from 3pm to 6pm to pick up their ticket to watch David Archuleta when he hits Malaysia. IPHONE users may soon be stopped from filming at concerts — as a result of new Apple technology.
The leading computer company plans to build a system that will sense when people are trying to video live events — and turn off their cameras. A patent application filed by Apple revealed how the technology would work. If an iPhone were held up and used to film during a concert infra-red sensors would detect it. These sensors would then contact the iPhone and automatically disable its camera function. People would still be able to send text messages and make calls. The new technology is seen as an attempt to protect the interests of event organisers and broadcasters who have exclusive rights to concerts. The companies are often left frustrated when videos of shows appear online via websites such as YouTube which let users watch them for free. Apple filed for the patent 18 months ago — and it is thought if successful it will help them negotiate deals with record labels to sell content through iTunes.

I wanted to thank the talk last night, never in my life I had so much fun. You know my poor English is confusing and even more when I use the google translator. But last night, I asked the girls about the latest article written here. Since I read it, I thought it was a conversation with a cushion or pad that used to sit david.
Here I never imagined that I would find an article on the back of David, surprised me and then laughed a lot.
I always thought my mind was racing away, but you have won me. As I said last night, you are a Pandora’s box for me and have opened a door. A large door.
Speaking of jeans david is a minor issue, but it is a debt I have with you and pay, I promise.
I like to have a conversation with David’s hands, I think I would ask them all, and I hope they answer me:
The question I would do to the hands, would be:
which are the shoulders you would choose to stay longer?
which is the sensation you feel when you are in David’s hair and try to fix it?
When David makes gestures, fly, shake, point, etc etc. How do you, get dizzy?
who decided not to hold the microphone stand, you or David?
you, you felt, when dried the tears of david?
The last question, do you allow someone (for example, this poor mortal), accompanied on his travels?
