Band Series, Part 4 ~ Introducing David Archuleta’s Band

Having no idea how important a bass player is to a band, my assumption was that the bass is the least important instrument because you can barely hear it, right? Seems that I had it all wrong. In any band, the bass player has a crucial role because he is depended upon to propel the music along. Establishing and keeping a steady rhythm by working with the drummer is another one of the bassist’s primary functions. The bassist is also responsible for linking the harmony or backing chords of a song with the rhythm. The link is so important to the song because it contributes to the style of the music, whether rock, jazz, pop, etc.
Enter Ben Shepherd, David’s new bassist.
Ben hails from Wellington, New Zealand and now resides in Valencia, California where he attends California Institute of the Arts and majors in Jazz Studies. He plays funk, fusion and jazz. At only 21 years old, he’s already worked with top New Zealand jazz musicians like Leigh Jackson and Kirsten McKenzie. In 2008 he recorded his first album “Double Play” featuring his own compositions.
Ben Shepherd has his own band called Mr. DanZ. It’s a jazz/fusion/rock/funk/blues/gospel band and Steven Robinson, David’s percussionist is a member. He credits Herbie Hancock and Weather Report as the band’s biggest influences.

There is a more mature, complex, raw vibe showing in David’s recent performances. It’s no stretch of the imagination to believe his new band has played a role in that growth, and will continue to be a seminal influence in the months to come. This is not the track Jive had in mind for him, but this “explosive..thunderous..high energy freight train” has left the station and there’s no turning back.

Interviewed by The Sun News, David gives his thoughts on the upcoming events.

“I love family stuff,” he said. “I’m a big supporter of families and family time together. I think it’s one of the most important things you can do. It’s a simple thing, but not always easy. It’s a thing you’ll appreciate the most down the road.”
The timing for the nation’s observance of lives lost also moves Archuleta.
“Memorial Day to me,” he said, “is just a day where you recognize people who have done so much, who had sacrificed so much of themselves and their own interests, to think of ways to be there for others, for families, for the country, for their towns. I think it’s one of the greatest holidays.
“It’s just a neat thing to remember what others have done for us, and the troops, what they’ve done, it’s what this country’s based on. It’s your own heritage, what they did so that you’re here today.
“My great grandpa was in World War II, and then on my mom’s side, they used to live in Honduras, and they found a way to come to the United States. It’s those kinds of trials and tribulations that our people in the past have had that influence where I am.”

Thanks for your comments! I so enjoyed getting the chance to learn about David’s new band and their unique sound. This is a young band but only in their ages. Each bandmember is equipped with creative ideas, experience, talent, energy and determination. Interesting to re-visit David’s quote from his “Band Auditions” vlog, from almost two months ago and how he very subtley described what we are in for.
“Before I had some really great musicians and band members that I was really learning from…you know, really great pop, great at doing pop stuff. It’s almost like they, in a music sense, they, the past members I’ve had, spoke English and Spanish. But now, I’m trying to learn more languages, like these band members will speak five or six different languages. So I want to broaden my horizon as a musician and learn to speak those languages or different cultures of those different sides of music.”

‘Idol’ alum kicks off Sun Fun festivities in the Myrtle Beach area

Three years have passed since David Archuleta finished runner-up on the seventh season of Fox’s “American Idol.”
Like Clay Aiken, Bucky Covington, Jennifer Hudson, Katharine McPhee and Kellie Pickler, just contending for the “Idol” title has turned into longer term success for Archuleta.
“It’s definitely been a great opportunity for me,” the 20-year-old said earlier this month. “It’s allowed me to go to record a bunch of recordings, and I have done two pop albums and a Christmas album, and then leading to my having a book, which is neat, and also to touring: Traveling everywhere to different places and across the United States, and it’s just a whole bunch of experiences I never thought I would really have. It’s been really great.”
Archuleta will headline a list of performers Saturday on Ocean Boulevard for the daylong kickoff to the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce’s 60th annual Sun Fun Festival. Events such as meet-and-greets with Disney Channel and Nickelodeon stars, and a pageant off site, begin after the city’s annual Memorial Day weekend parade, for which U.S. Sen. John McCain is the grand marshal, as part of Myrtle Beach’s annual Military Appreciation Days.
In a phone call from Los Angeles, Archuleta said he splits his time between his “work base” there and with family in his native Utah, his “home base.”
Growing up the son of a trumpeter father and bilingual singer mother bolstered Archuleta’s musical background and appreciation for the arts.
“It’s great to have a family who has a life in music,” he said, “and just growing up around it helped influence me and give me kind of a different perspective on music, and what it does for other people.”

Archuleta said he has kept up pretty well with ensuing seasons of “Idol,” especially this year, with enthusiasm for one new official in particular.
“I’ve really enjoyed it,” he said. “I like the new judges. I think Jennifer Lopez is very kind. Artists think it’s awesome seeing a Latina being part of the show. Just seeing her critiques, I really like what she says. She’s very positive – not that aggressive, but she really gives good advice. She really gives really great tips, to bring out the performance. That’s what is really cool.
“She really tries to find what she feels is missing from the performance and encourages them to do it for the next performance.”
Archuleta said he learned new fine points about himself early in the “Idol” audition process.
“What the show taught me is that I could do a lot more than I [thought I] could,” he said. “I never thought I could get past the first round with 15,000 people there, and all those great singers. Even in that first round, it was a lot of work, and there were definitely some overwhelming tunes, but I was still able to get through it, which prepared me for what came afterward.
“It prepared me for what I didn’t know was next as a performer and artist and person.”
More than decade on the air has ushered in different eras for “Idol,” in Archuleta’s eyes.
“It changes every year,” he said, “because the people, not the show, give the show a different feel, a different vibe.
“I think it has definitely has changed from season to season, but this year, most recently, it’s gotten back to the vibe it was earlier on. Before, they were singing to tracks in the semi-rounds, but now it’s a full, blown-out band.”
Archuleta sees contestants taking more risks and changing things up for themselves.
“It used to be focused more on singing and tone, the way the person’s voice sounded to the song,” he said. “Now people are singing songs and adapting the songs to their own style. It’s really gotten gone back to more about the voice, which has been kind of fun, but it’s a mixture.”

David Archuleta is a familiar face from American Idol. The previous idol contestant returned to Los Angeles to the American Idol Finale on Wednesday night to watch the show and perform. While America didn’t see the entertainer on the stage of the Nokia Plaza, Archuleta was at the preview party hosted by KIIS Radio across the Nokia Plaza.
With the time delay of the program, when 8pm rolled around on the pacific time zone, the audience that was in the Nokia Theater headed over to the private parties around the area to enjoy the evening and share in the experience. The biggest party had David Archuleta perform and shared his talent with the party goers.
In addition to having a great time, the fans got to once again one of American Idol favorites of the past 10 seasons. While David Archuleta is still very young, the entertainer has a strong army of fans and plenty of opportunities ahead of him.

As fans of David Archuleta, we marvel at the constant growth and development in his singing. I ask you, was that always in him and he holds back or was the potential always there? In the beginning David’s old friends told fans that, “You aint seen nothin yet”. But, David says that he is always surprised by what he is able to do. Does God bless him for always doing his best and says, David, here’s a little more for you to process since you have proven yourself. You are ready for the next challenge. Then through this blessing, David discovers that there is more in him. He humbly thanks God. Then he grasps and develops the gift until he is confident enough to pass it along to his fans. David passionately passes his blessings on to his fans. We gratefully receive them and love him for it. God’s blessings are limitless. David’s future is endless. As fans, we are anticipating what David will give us this summer. Oh, those poor unsuspecting people at MB! They don’t have a clue what they’re in for. 😯 I hope beyond hope that someone gets some video of the audience! I wish he was performing a couple of times–cause once you’ve heard him you can’t get enough, and word WILL spread.
Thanks Bebe for your hard work and educating us on the talented musicians—EEEEP! Which makes me wonder if maybe they will do a couple of instrumentals to give David a little vocal rest.
One nice thing is that it’s East coast and we won’t have to wait until late to get something from our ground troops. Any early sitings would be nice too. 8) Hint–hint—ASAP–yes! I’m begging.

I have had the day off and spent 70% of it online, relaxing. Just watched David’s u-stream chat from last October. I forgot how great it was. He breaks into song so many times I lost track. I hadn’t seen it in so long it was almost new again.
(I just realized how ridiculous that all sounded. This was an entire hour long chat from last year, lol. What is wrong with me?)

bebe, just have to applaud you on a great band series! Great stuff. I don’t know much about bass players but Ben sounds incredibly talented. Loved the video, very cool stuff. I just love the jazz influence and the new vibe we are hearing. I wish I did know more about that side of music so I could really totally appreciate the talent that this band represents. It is so exciting. I am getting butterflies for tomorrow night already!

It is definately a huge weekend here. It is good that we rented a car as it is so crowded on the sidewalks and has been very hot so we bought a cooler to fill with ice and cold drinks and that will be our base as we wait for David to take to the stage.

I am so excited for what is about to happen! 😛 My son has played bass before, so I have always tuned into where the music is coming from. I love the bass as it relates to the completeness of a song. Takes me back to when NYC was on our minds, the morning of the debut on Z100 of Crush — we were all breathlessly waiting and so very proud of David and happy for him. So many amazing and proud moments since then and tonight will simply be the latest to add to our boundless pride. Can hardly wait!

Question – when was David’s last “actual” concert? I mean other than a few songs here and there. Didn’t 2010 consist of writing and book signings and radio interviews? Was it the “epic” Lexburg Christmas Tour in December, 2009?

Susie – I was thinking about that too. He had a few shows last fall, (York, NA, GR, Manilla, Singapore) a few songs at the book tour, but nothing more than a few songs. Not exactly a full concert. How long was Anaheim? I think it was the CFTH tour, a year and a half ago.
I am off to work soon – have fun everyone. 🙂
p.s. If he sings Good Place tonight, PERMAGRIN. 🙂

Oh my! So late, but I just couldn’t stop! So much “amazingness” and So much to say, but my brain does not seem to be working…so I’ll just quote Emmegirl: “Felt soooo good just having him on that stage again.”
And his tweet after the concert was very telling: “Had such a fun time tonight in Myrtle Beach!!! So refreshing doing a show again. Thanks to everyone who came!” After 16 songs, giving his all on each one, in the heat and humidity, and signing autographs afterwards…he calls it refreshing! He seems to need it as much as we do!

David Archuleta Ruled Myrtle Beach

This past Saturday was the 60th Annual Sun Fun Festival at Myrtle Beach, SC. with appearances by Disney and Nickelodeon stars such as Emily Osment, Jake T. Austin, Ariana Grande and Noah Munck. But after a fun day of festivities, one special guest made it a night to remember.
David Archuleta headlined the concert for the night, performing for the first time with all his new band members. Always a favorite, a huge chunk of the crowd at Myrtle Beach were there just for him! Singing songs from both his debut and his latest album, The Other Side of Down, with new arrangements and excellence from his band that delighted.
Among his set list were also three covers, two of which he was performing live for the first time. The first cover of the night was “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” by Tears For Fears. A different sound for David, but he nailed it with the stunning flexibility of his voice as he got lost in the meaning of the song.
The next cover was one that was completely unexpected, but a perfect addition. “Blackbird” by Paul McCartney, also sung by Carly Smithson during David’s season of American Idol. David knocked it out of the park with his soft, tender voice and soulfulness.
Last of the covers was one David performed acoustically not too long ago with only half of his band, and was even better with the full band and larger crowd. “Gotta Get Thru This” by Daniel Bedingfield, once again a different sound for David, but he definitely pulls it off. Halfway through the song David stopped singing to introduce his new bands members. One by one he introduced them as they played their instrument exuberantly, showing off their skills.
It’s safe to say that David is going in a different, but better direction with his music as he takes a new step in his career. Songs like “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and “Gotta Get Thru This” are a change for the usual balladeer, but fit his personality better and give him a different voice aside from ballads. And by the looks of the Myrtle Beach turnout, it’s no doubt that David’s fans will be with him every step of the way as he enters this new chapter.

Good Morning! I’m up and rested and ready to go again! Buffering up every video on this page from last night right now, all 26! I am still floating from the entire experience and like many of you, I wasn’t even there. The underwater cellcast, the chat at unplugged afterwards, (we had a record number there!) the fun of watching each new vid as it got uploaded by Jonerz and Emily, the updates and photos by SB and all the squeeing that ensued was a blast! He does not disappoint and neither do his fans. Love that review above! Back in a bit. Not done squeeing yet by a long shot! 😛

I watch EWTRTW in between every other video. Tears For Fears was one of my favorites back in the day. My son in law loves their music, can’t wait to show him.

I must have been half asleep when you posted those awesome pics from EWTRTW. That’s the only explanation I can come up for missing them (and they are not to be missed), aside from my own Archustupor!
Last night, I was too busy hunting down and posting videos to watch any so today feels like a picnic. “My Hands” ending is back to being awesome with the help of the vocals of the band! Woot! Woot! “EWTRTW” is now owned by The Voice; it was exquisite. “Blackbird” was a surprise! The Beatles/McCartney songbook suits David well. More please! Loved the tribute to his Mom on ATM! Nice to see the resurrected “Works For Me”! And my wish came true when David sang “Falling Stars”, my favorite off of TOSOD. I still have five or six more to watch, the pie a la mode of the day for me.
It’s plain to see that David is blossoming without the constraints of a label that denied him the freedom to be who he is. They should have offered him the world and begged him to stay. His tweet about feeling ‘refreshed’ after the show was so telling.
I saw both a new intensity and a freedom in David’s performance last night. Kudos to the new band and to David’s manager. Keep up the good work! And from what I’ve been reading on the web, the show was a huge success and people are liking the new direction David is taking with his music.

But not too tired to thank you all so much for all the work, videos, postings, stay-up-late-ness and general fine skills you contribute to making this a fun place to be.
I love the new “My Hands” ending. Always one of my favorites. And I am really loving Blackbird. How the bird finds light and healing even in the dead of night. This is what I get from his rendition. And it follows “everybody wants to rule..”.
Whether or not that was planned, I like it very much.

Is there any way to make another MP3 of it for the correct length of time? I appreciate you posting all the videos and pictures for those of us who weren’t able to be there except in spirit. I hope we get more US concerts soon!

The STR and the WFM from JR’s MP3’s are over 23 minutes long. It was apparently an honest mistake but Abrra has fixed them and you can get her corrected versions of both these songs from Abrra’s candy jar on the left sidebar. Sorry for any inconvenience. Check your downloads for these 2 songs and replace. JR may have fixed this in her files already but just want to give everyone a heads up on this.

whew! I finally made it! I got the videos watched (they are some good quality–remember what we watched during his first solo tour(?)), downloaded mp3’s and mp4’s (thanks abrra for fixing the 2 that ended up being the whole show each-I thought I was doing something stupid and missing something somewhere), and even made it to church–eyeballs were computer glazed and ears ringing with Blackbird and EWTRTW, but I was there, 😉 and finally just had the last of the neighbors, that dropped by to visit, leave.
I seriously cannot believe last night’s performance. It was, without a doubt, awesome and, as David put it, refreshing. We are so in trouble when he gets his US tour figured out and we start seeing his shows again. You MB attendees are so lucky to have witnessed this weekend. Hopefully it doesn’t take too long for you to come back down to earth so we can have some re-caps. ♥♥ **will wait**

well saturday,I plan on flying home from work(in my car)parking myself in front of my computer,(in my comfy clothes) waiting for David Archuleta to appear on stage on Ustream, and waiting..anxiously nibbling my fingernails down to little nubs in anticipation,then switching to a bag of chips ,2 bottles of water and an apple, followed later by a piece chocolate cake and milk, chatting with people I have never actually met but that I actually love, watching endless videos of an EPIC concert over and over again,more videos, staying up late,and then napping off and on all day Sunday between videos. I’ll just tell them tuesday I decided to go away, went to Myrtle Beach for the weekend, and it was fabulous♥

Hi everybody! Just wanted to thank everyone for the kind comments about the videos. I love being able to post them, so I’m glad folks enjoy them. David was spectacular last night, as you already know. He is always wonderful live, but there was just a different “feel” last night. He is so obviously happy, it was like seeing Shop Around David again, only a more mature version.Oh, I can’t even describe what I mean properly, but there is a new self-confidence oozing from him. And I love it!
