Band Series, Part 3 ~ Introducing David Archuleta’s Band
Posted by bebereader on Thursday, May 19, 2011
Guitarist, Brian Green
We’ve already learned about two of David’s new band members; keyboardist Mark Nilan Jr and percussionist Steven Robinson. Each, with his unique abilities and background brings something special to the mix to complement David’s voice.
Next up is Brian Green, an accomplished guitarist/composer with an impressive resume. I contacted Brian on facebook (he’s not on Twitter) and asked him for updated biographical information for this article. He immediately and good-naturedly responded with a link to his website. His music stretches to many genres including jazz, pop, ambient, Brazilian and groove music.
What is groove music? According to Wikipedia:
“Groove is the sense of propulsive rhythmic “feel” or sense of “swing” created by the interaction of the music played by a band’s rhythm section (drums, electric bass or double bass, guitar, and keyboards). Groove is a consideration in genres such as salsa, funk, rock, fusion, and soul. The word is often used to describe the aspect of certain music that makes one want to move, dance, or “groove”.
Hailing from and residing in Los Angeles, California, Brian first picked up a guitar when he was just eight years old, to impress a girl he liked in grade school. He credits rocker Eddie Van Halen as his earliest influence but later became interested in jazz when he was in high school. In 2000 he was a Spotlight Award finalist, giving him the opportunity to perform at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion with renowned pianist Gerald Clayton. In 2001 he was honored as a Clifford Brown/Stan Getz Fellow and selected to participate in the 2001 Grammy Band.
Brian was accepted to the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California in 2002, where he studied jazz and classical music and began a degree in Studio Jazz Guitar. In 2004 he worked with and recorded for producer David Foster as a featured soloist on Michael Buble’s hit single “Home”. Then Warner Brothers approached him to play with Michael Buble on a tour around the world for a year and a half. After the Buble tour, he concentrated on completing his degree at USC and on being a composer and artist. He graduated with honors in 2007, the same year he recorded his debut album of all original jazz music, “Scenic Route”.
“The disc is fantastic for relaxing at home but the music is at its best live, where, in the tradition of jazz, Green and his band create plenty of improvised solos and experimental melodies. His is a modern jazz, often eschewing the piano but making use of other tools such as looping pedals to lay down melodies live and solo over them.” ~from Brian Green’s myspace page
“I always prefer playing live shows. Something can be lost in jazz that is too studied. Sometimes it’s better to create a vibe for the audience, an aesthetic. That’s what I try to do with my music…
I want to make a fun environment for everyone so that they can relate to me, the performer, without needing extensive knowledge of the history of jazz.” ~Brian Green
Brian and Steven accompanied David to the Invisible Children event in Nashvile last month. We were treated to a new acoustic guitar-driven “Crush” that gave the song new depth.
credit JR
Since October 2010, Brian has been singing vocals and playing lead guitar for his own jazz/pop/indie band, Montë Mar. He credits The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Johnny Marr, Milton Nascimento and Radiohead as the band’s major influences. With music that grooves, improvised solos and experimental melodies, Brian’s skills and experience make him perfectly suited for David’s band.
The versatility of David’s new band is exciting and I can’t wait to hear them meld their sounds together and get their “groove” on!

I am so excited about this band. Brian, another accomplished, multi-faceted musician. Absolutely loved what we heard from him in Nashville, extremely talented. Loved the new feel he brought especially to Crush and TOSOD. This is gonna be sooo goood!
bebe, “I also noticed a new maturity in his expressions. More character to his face, more depth to his smile. It’s a beautiful evolution”…you described perfectly what I was seeing but couldn’t put into words.

Bebe you do a great job of feeding our curiosity about David’s band members. Thank you for all you do to bring more David “stuff” to us. I really like that every article about the band members begins with a pic of David. That is how it should be. David first.
The Nashville was far and away my favorite rendition of Crush. This version was more adult, grown-up. It’s as if as David moves into a more mature stage of life he brings his music along with him. Different than some older performers who still sing their teenage songs in the same old style.
Cannot wait to see and hear the fruits of all these labors. Yayyy!! Here it comes!!
Look out!!

Emmegirl,
As I learn about the new band members, it’s apparent that they all have great skills and were hand-picked for the job. At the Nashville event, we only got to hear Steven and Brian perform and I was impressed at how they were careful to let David’s voice be front and center. I hope this continues when the whole band gets together!
Sky,
I’m with you! Best “Crush” e-ver!
Dayzee,
You’re going to the Utah Entertainer & Choice Awards?! So lucky!! Details please, when you return!
“This version was more adult, grown-up. It’s as if as David moves into a more mature stage of life he brings his music along with him.”
I agree. I see it in the way he sings “My Hands” now, too.

Hot diggity dog! I am looking forward to all of this that is going to happen in the near future. Or, at least, I hope that is going to happen. I think David’s band is in tune with him. And a little more of his age as well. I think that connection makes things go a little smoother. 🙂

Well I’m just nosy enough to ask Google–sounds like 5 years is the average , depending on what type of fish he/she was. It said goldfish can last decades.
I often wished David in his vlogs would talk about his fish and Teddy ( wonder if he’s still around) only time he mentioned him was when he went AWOL. 8)
Thanks Bebe for the info on the guitar player–all I can say is I like what my ears hear!

Writing in his name Emmegirl!!!! It ends tomorrow if anyone wants to join in. This one actually earns him an award at the billboard awards show on the 22nd, Monday. See below.
When the Billboard Music Awards are handed out in Las Vegas on May 22, there’s one trophy that will stand apart all the others – and that’s because the decision of who gets it is entirely up to you.
The first-ever Billboard.com Fan Favorite Award will be presented to the musician who receives the most votes in our exclusive Billboard.com readers poll. There’ll be no chart statistics, airplay data or ticket sales influencing this decision. Your vote and your vote alone will decide the winner!
The poll will be open from Monday, May 9 through Friday, May 20. The winner will be announced on May 22 at the Billboard Music Awards between 10pm – 11pm. Catch it only on ABC.

I’m feeling a little irked right now. Why do they have some Spanish singing group on Idol tonight, and not David who is so far above and beyond these guys—especially when he sings in Spanish with that lovely accent of his?!?

Bebe, it sounds great to me for David to have such an accomplished musician as Brian Green working with him.
Of course I am enjoying the connections of Brian with David Foster and Michael Buble and now with David. I feel 100 percent hapoy for David when I see the musicians that David has in his company. In talking about mentors I would take a guess that Brian could be just that for David. The entire group of band members will make awesome music and just ‘8’ days until they are on a stage.

#22 This is how I understand it. If it’s not accurate I hope someone corrects the misinformation.
Jive is part of 19 Entertainment, which is also linked with CKX, which owns proprietary rights to the Idol and So You Think You Can Dance television brands – so unless he signs with another label under Sony/19 Entertainment, I seriously doubt we will be seeing him on either of those shows. They pretty much promote only their artists, unless they are mega huge (ex. Lady Gaga), then everybody wants them for ratings.

Emmegirl…even if it is true, to me that’s OK. AI is just another reality show but not reality at all. The show Is not finding stars anymore like Jennifer Hudson or Carrie Underwoood or David Archuleta. I used to like the Ford commercials but even those have list their fun so who knows the future of the show anyway.
The further away that David gets from that ancient term “runner up” the better. I believe that his break Is a severance from all of that. every time he is announced he us classified as that. Everyone appreciates the start that recognizes a talent but you don’t have to wear it around your neck forever and when you go through their system that is what happens.
This became a rather lengthy comment but thanks Emmegirl for finding that.

Thanks for another great entry in your band series. David’s new guitarist, Brian Green sounds incredibly gifted and wise. I am loving the sound of this..
I loved the new vibe from the Invisible Children show. There was something so organic and irresistible. Bongo thumping, guitar thrumming, and David, feeling that rhythm and answering it in some of his moves on stage. I like that Brian understands that playing a live show is something dynamic and spontaneous. I think David will be much more open to improvising and letting the music move him vocally and physically. He shows this in GGTT…organic motion, especially in the hands that seem to almost interpret the music he feels. Subtle groove that moves into a wailing, knee raised hunderdown as the intensity grows. This song as David does it is unrecognizable from the original version by Beddingfield. He owns it now and if this is the direction this band and him are going, my friends…I think we’ve had it.

SB, just read your comment on 32. You must have read my mind! I was about to write something similar. I think the farthest he stays from that show the better. David is such a unique artist. We’re witnessing at this time the beginning of his development and evolution. The Great David Archuleta will be something magnificently wonderful at the point of his full potential. He will eventually shed this AI tag (Or whatever you want to call it. Sorry, I’m not good with words.)and the sooner that happens, the better. I don’t like hearing him being introduced as “American Idol runner up”. I know David likes watching the show and keeps up with what’s going on there. He’s bound to be interested in other singers and in whatever talent may come out of there. I appreciate the opportunities and the doors that were opened for him because of AI, but I feel that that whole thing needs to be shed already. An I don’t care what anybody says, no one from that show has ever or will ever make such an impression as David has made on people. In their lives, even! I know he has made a difference in my life. For which I will be eternally grateful. Sorry, just my ramblings and thoughts.

Didn’t David stay for the M&G?
Was hoping for more pictures! 😦
Especially since they gave David’s award to some guy named Jimmer…what kind of name is Jimmer anyway? Anyway, looks like everyone there got “Jimmered” tonight. I’m sure momjulee was ecstatic! She’s one of his biggest fans. 🙂
Oh well…
Anyway..7 days & counting down!!

Tonight is one more reason I am pleased that David is moving on and in the direction that he has chosen. Correct me if I am wrong but the sensation of this year’s MoTab Christmas performances was David. He brought many more thousands to the concert or at least around 500,000 more applied for tickets. For the first time, there were standing ovations in places in the concerts that were never there before. People could not contain themselves. The choir’s reputation is worldwide and I could go on forever but I won’t.
So again correct me if I am incorrect but David flew from LA to SLC to present an award and he did not even get asked to sing???
LA is looking better all the time…

When it comes to David, fair play has become distant. He has changed the lives of people all over the world who only know his voice, as the voice of music. People can remember by the many thousands the night that he first sang ‘Imagine’ and what it did for them and does for others. He has fans all over the world and each one of them lives with the same passions for his music. Just ask Yoko Ono or Priscilla Presley how they feel about his music.
Well, the good thing is that we are here for him and it does matter.

“I don’t like hearing him being introduced as “American Idol runner up”. Sorry, just my ramblings and thoughts.”
Don’t apologize. Many of us feel the same way. I don’t think David even likes being referred to as ‘runner-up” either. There was an interview about six months ago where he said it in almost the same words. “I dont’ want to be known as American Idol runner up forever.” <<< paraphrasing from memory

Just thinking about how David sang a line from one of Frank Sinatra’s songs tonight. He seems to know every song ever published! But Frank Sinatra was a icon and a huge success. It’s not too surprising that David knows of him just like he knows of Tony Bennett.
But Debbie Gibson? She’s no Frank Sinatra. LOL I can’t imagine David knowing of her. I really liked her song “Lost In Your Eyes” in the eighties. I’d be shocked if David knows her music.

I came across this by accident tonight as I was searching and made a slight variation…the author is unknown to me.
Measure of a Man….A Tribute
“A man’s strength is measured by his heart”
It takes much to be a true man…
It’s not just simply the gender;
Some think it’s about the looks
But I know the truth…
You know a real man by the way he acts;
Every unselfish thing he does…
Knowing he will always be there to help
Inside, a real man is filled with love
A real man cries…
And he does;
His heart has known pain
He’s also known love which has left molded impressions deep within
A real man opens himself up to life experiences
Opening your heart is never wrong
And he has taught that to others as well…
Within his embrace; his strong, caring embrace
Solitude can be found
If only you take the time to know his depth and breadth
Very few know the true measure of a man;
Very few know the true measure of THIS man…
May God grant him peace and serenity as he journeys on the sacred travels of his life.

Me, myself and I are having a battle tonight. Well at least me and myself are. Me says maybe David’s glad he’s not performing tonight, doesn’t have to worry about a band or backup tapes or what to sing or warming up. He can just be one of the guests, relax and mingle.
Myself says, he might have been more comfortable being on stage in front of all those people , if he was singing. That seems to be his territory–stage and singing. Not talking.
About not getting an award of some kind, I don’t know enough about how they are decided or when they are decided, so I guess I really shouldn’t criticize. He has lots of fans in his home state that adore him and they have nothing to do with how things are done by this certain committee. But , I’ll bet they hear about it. ( the committee)

Dakgal, you are so right about him being more comfortable on stage if he were singing. Even as he is talking he breaks into song “the best is yet to come”…the crowd goes wild and David realizes he is singing. Oooops!
I was so lucky to be sitting right where the performers were going on and off stage. David came out early and stood there (right by my chair aaaaaak!) Many people came to talk to him and he was so gracious with everyone. My daughter told him, “My mother likes you better than she likes me.” David smiled, “Oh I don’t think so.”
His part of the program was so small and he was by far the most talented person in the room. Seemed like such a waste to me. This was what I expected, but still I was disappointed that he was not center stage for the entire time :).

I see I’m not the only one that was disappointed in the Utah Awards Show last night. Well, I guess we did get some pictures of David in a suit singing one line of a song. I’m hoping he left right away to have fun with friends or go on a date. But next week we finally get to hear him sing again and we will all be ecstatic. Yes, I also read that David was contractually unable to sing last night because of SOF. The promoters of SOF want everyone to buy tickets to hear David sing there. Hopefully he is getting paid well for SOF.

What a tease! Did you see the sly smile on David’s face when he sang that one line? Except for “My Way” and “New York New York” I was never a fan of Frank Sinatra or his music. However, hearing that one little line, “The Best is Yet to Come” with David’s voice and interpretation, I’m sold on the Sinatra songbook, but only if David sang it. An album of Sinatra covers a la Archuleta would be divine! One day….one day…
He looked so handsome up on that stage, so comfortable. He owned that stage whether he performed or not.
One week from today…MB!!!

Thanks Angelica–for preserving that wonderful little snippet for posterity. Just makes you want to yell MORE!! MORE!!
I have an 87 yr. old aunt that OTT’d over Frank the way we do David. He was her heart throb in the ’40’s, and thinks absolutely nobody can sing as good as him. I have made her several CD’s of Frank ( of course I threw in a few of David’s songs also) 😉
She said “now if he would just sing some of Sinatra, I’d listen to him more”. Bless her heart–she’s not into today’s music which is understandable. But,boy would David blow her away.
