New Series: Introducing David Archuleta’s Band

Posted by bebereader on Saturday, April 23, 2011

1. Keyboard Player: Mark Nilan Jr.

He’s David’s new keyboard player and he’s all that jazz! Mark Nilan Jr. was born in 1983 and raised in Detroit in a music loving family. At an early age he became familiar with legends like Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, Ray Charles and Chick Corea, all who helped bring him to where he is today, an accomplished jazz pianist and composer who is also the studio and on-screen keyboard player for Fox’s hit TV show, “Glee”.

During his high school years, he won awards for ‘best jazz soloist’ at local music festivals, received a spotlight performance at the Detroit International Jazz Festival, played professionally and taught music theory at his school. He received a full scholarship to Wayne State University where he studied jazz piano and was honored in 2004 as Best Jazz Composer. Then he went to Los Angeles and earned a Master’s Degree in jazz piano from the California Institute of the Arts.

One year later in 2009, he wrote his debut album, “Hands On”, containing ten original songs. He said:

“I really wanted to break the smooth jazz stereotype of drum machine grooves and eight bar loops and just write great songs with a live band. My goal is to bring back the fire to jazz—a hot, intense vibe to the contemporary jazz world.”

The master engineer for the project, Ron Boustead knew a good thing when he saw it. “I could tell 30 seconds into the album that this was a high quality project—the tunes, musicianship, recording and mixing are all top notch.”

But Mark Nilan isn’t all about jazz.

”I love music, all genres…I love living in all sorts of musical worlds. During the making of the album I’d go to Paramount for a day of shooting Glee and playing pop tunes and then come home and work on some of my great fresh jazz music.”

He works in a vast range of music including jazz, pop and rap. He’s able to combine jazz with current music to create a unique sound which is why he’s known in the field as a “musical monster“.

Now we will get to know the band members in full and they seem to be amazing. It will be an exciting time at the open air concert in Myrtle Beach. Along with it being the 60th anniversary of the Mayfest, there is a motorcycle rally on at the same time so for David and his band, it will definately be awesome.

Please bring over the wonderful pictures posted late last evening and the video by the AnnaheimDucks!

Thanks Bebe for the very fine introduction to the first band member.

See you at the beach Mark!

    Bebe,

Thank you for doing the series on David Archuleta’s band. I think this will clear up any thoughts of David going jazz. These uber talented musicians are jazz and much much more.

The fact that someone of Mark’s musical caliber went to audition for David’s band is all kinds of great in my eyes. I can’t wait to what they’ve been working on.

SB, Why am I not surprised 🙂 So happy you’ll be there to witness the new beginning of David Archuleta.

David’s performance of the NA last night is all over the internet news media and blogs. It has 2,458 views so far and the honors below.

Bebe—Thanks for the info on the band, I don’t know squat about the music industry, but it comes to my mind that with the great credentials and experience that Mark Nilan has, whether he was asked to or opted to audition for David’s band, it pays great tribute to Davids talent and the respect he must have in the music community. Mark must have a lot of other opportunities and he chose this one!

Angelica is so right in saying ” we’ve got a serious situation on our hands”. Forget about being gob smacked–that’s just like a love tap, considering what’s coming. It’s going to be sooo much worse–it’ll be a no holds barred- below the belt- lay you out flat as a board– Archuthumping!

SB– I’m so glad you are going to Myrtle Beach–you are right about how it being awesome, it will attract huge crowds–I hope he gets to play more than one set. Besides the bikers and tourists & locals, there is a huge retired military community that lives in the area ( hopefully their kids and G. kids will be visiting too.

Geez, I’m windy this morning, so before my day gets into full gear:

I love it, and am getting so excited thinking about what’s coming with David and this amazing group of musicians. Archuthumping is a good word for it. I think what we are about to witness will be so outstanding, there will hardly be words to describe it. You’ll have to hear it to believe it.

    dja, dakgal, excellence attracts excellence.

I think think we are gonna see more of some of the “peeks” he has given us – HYAMLC, Del Mar YEDL – the intro and end after the whistling, Del Mar Barriers “heyyyeee, munamup boomboom, hey”, WFM intro, the sliding “beeee” in Denver/TOSOD, the wooh-oooo-oo-oo-oo in the TOSOD/Sara B concert.

Sounds like with this band he will be freer to take it anywhere he wants to at any given time…..give me a minute….I’m thinking about that….OMG!….less poppy with more soul, a little jazz-infused soul maybe (better put my big girl panties on.)

Dak, “whether he was asked to or opted to audition for David’s band, it pays great tribute to Davids talent and the respect he must have in the music community.”

I so agree! I’m sure David has been networking and making contacts in LA and as a result, more and more people are learning about his amazing talent.

Lynella, I think we’ll all need seatbelts! LOL

Ray “…the best of the best on one stage, look out world!” <<<You've got that right!

Bluesky, "Kudos to the “trumpeter swan” in our midst: you always give me a good reason to look skyward, DA." <<< Well said, as always!

Poof, Amazing talent is right! David can always be counted on to give an outstanding peformance of the SSB. I've seen various comments on different sites all to the effect of "And he wasn't the winner???"

Bebe—thanks so much for this about the band. It is so awesome to see David surround himself with other outstanding musicians, and I saw that tweet from Mark Nilan on twitter. Way to go!!

So wish I was going to Myrtle Beach with you SB. I loved getting to know you here in SLC during MoTab week. So hope you are coming to the Stadium of Fire too. Patti gets to go now, I am so excited. And so is she. Her family told her she NEEDS to go. She is in Arizona right now at a family reunion with her hubby. She says she has no energy, but she didn’t get as sick this time as she did with the two chemo treatments she had last month. MunkFOD is coming into town on Monday and wants to meet Patti, so trying to get that arranged sometime next week. Patti is so touched that she wants to meet her. But I am tending my daughter’s 3 kids while she runs off to Holland with her husband and his family and it might not happen for me, but at least they can get together I hope. Fingers crossed xxxxx.

Well, off to get my son’s 4 kids ready for bed. I am tending them while he took his wife to dinner and a movie for her birthday today. Have a great evening all of you!!

Loved DA’s NA last night! Absolutely stunning, and ABs, thanks for the MP3’s. You are amazing to do that for us and so fast too.

Blessed be God forever. Happy Easter, everyone! It’s so good to be back here again. I hadn’t been here since Lent begun. Lent is a time of prayer, works of charity and self-denial. I had included my ODD in my self-denial. Yes. I went without David for 40 days. No music, videos, tweeets, fansites, etc. I realize that in the grand scheme of things, it may not sound like a big sacrifice. But in addition to my prayers for David, I thought I’d add this little offering so the Lord may use it as He sees fit for David’s sake as well as mine. Well, so much has happened since then, and I have so much to catch up to. I’ve already seen David sing the NA from last night and my heart was pounding! I MISSED HIM SO MUCH!!! And I missed The Voice and everyone here too! Happy to be back!

How awesome is it that David was out doing what he loves to do—enjoying music. He works so hard, and it’s great that he also takes time to have fun. We all need to remember to do that, too!

    Happy Easter everyone.

Been absent a while due to the passing of my father-in-law this week and lots of family staying with us. Thanks to Abrra, Bebe, and Djafan for always being on the job and for all of you posters and lurkers for being here too.

Thank you, Bebe, for the cool introduction to Mark Nilan Jr. aka “musical monster.” Hoping for great things to come from this collaboration between David and some of the best musicians/artists out there.

    Angelica –beautiful picture –Thank You

Sorry to hear about your father-in-law. Hope your family is doing OK–condolences to you all.

At this point in the day, I am extremely bored–as you can see in the right hand corner –I found a jelly bean. The Easter Bunny cometh!

This came up in chat last night and has been bugging me all day –so here’s some info.

What is the origin of the Easter bunny?

Like the origin of Easter, the origin of the Easter Bunny has roots that go back to pre-Christian, Anglo-Saxon history. The holiday was originally a pagan celebration that worshiped the goddess Eastre. She was the goddess of fertility and springtime and her earthly symbol was the rabbit.

Thus the pre-Christian Anglo-Saxons worshiped the rabbit believing it to be Eastre’s earthly incarnation.

When the Anglo-Saxons were converted to Christianity, the pagan holiday, which occurred around the same time as the Christian memorial of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, was combined with the Christian celebration and given the name Easter.

Originally, there were some very pagan practices that went along with the Easter celebration. Today, Easter is often commercialized, with all the focus on eggs, the Easter bunny, etc.

Because of this, many churches are starting to refer to it as Resurrection Day.

thanks, me too I had fun last night. The girls let me express freely, I also discovered a sense of humor that I ignored. Every time I meet with the girls, jokes arise unintentionally. I try to translate everything I can but sometimes google does not understand me. So I always say, if I’m dangerous with my poor English, Spanish I am truly almost as lethal as Jennette McCurdy.
    Poor David.

Dak, I didn’t know the Easter Bunny story, interesting.

If you haven’t checked David’s official website check it out. If this is telling of what’s to come it definitely going to be good 🙂
