David Archuleta graced us with another video blog yesterday saying what could have been said in half the time, yet in typical David fashion, he would go on. blah blah blah blah blah. For 8 minutes and 37 seconds to be exact, talking about building foundations for the future. Yawn. I’m so over him.
That’s the best I can do for the gag fest that typically marks the 1st of April, because for me, this is a day for keeping it real.
The charuth is, he had me at buenos dias. I really meant and need to say that in typical David fashion, he exceeded all expectations. He is in control of his destiny and it showed in every poorly lighted frame of his video blog. If I had to find a fault that would be my only one, not enough attention to the aesthetics of good lighting. We have to make screen caps and collages with this stuff, dude, work with us here! Never mind. I can’t complain. He gave us the scoop and let us into the workings of his genius and it was a beautiful thing to see even in the poorest of light. Behold, the solid foundation he is laying:
This time around, he is hand-picking the band and keeping them close together, close to the action in his home base of LA.
He wants to work as often as he can with them to get, as he put it, the “vibe,” “feel” and “chemistry” just right, so he can “feel inspired by the people I’m working with on stage.”
He is writing alone now to find out “what David is.” When he figures out what he wants to say and how he wants to say it and gets more skilled at it, he will collaborate with other writers again. Until then, this is his time to find out what he is capable of creating, without outside persuasion, from the depths of his own beautiful soul. Very smart move. I swear he slays me.
He wants to sometime do a vlog during a jam session with his band and let us actually watch the process. I declare he will be the death of me.
To that end, (being the end of me) he proceeded to write a song on the piano, using keys in the lower scale he never uses to write with but which he finds himself suddenly liking. He sings in his elfin tongue words that are unintelligible to the human ear but nevertheless, enchanting. I know he will be my demise. I’m willing to live with that for as long as I can.
One more thing and this is the best part of this whole excellent vlog for me. Music is the universal language but he takes that metaphor even further. He describes the different genres of music as separate and unique languages in themselves. You can hear him in the video but I will record it here in his own words because he gets this so right it’s scary.
“Before I had some really great musicians and band members that I was really learning from…you know, really great pop, great at doing pop stuff. It’s almost like they, in a music sense, they, the past members I’ve had, spoke English and Spanish. But now, I’m trying to learn more languages, like these band members will speak five or six different languages. So I want to broaden my horizon as a musician and learn to speak those languages or different cultures of those different sides of music.”
What musical languages he will learn in the days ahead is what keeps me hanging on for dear life.

Angelica – After your April 1st tease (whew!!!), what a great reflection on David’s last vlog which was all kinds of wonderful. Everything he’s talking about reminds us of his integrity to be a true artist and musician. It’s just going to be hard to be patient and wait.
It does seem David is telling us he may be putting his “pop” side in the past and now getting down to some real substance and his own true expressions. I agree with previous posters in feeling we’ll need to “hang on, hang in for the ride of our lives”. The more we see of that beautiful soul and witness his true passions unleashed, well, maybe it is good that we have to wait awhile and try to build up our strength!
The “One” postings have majorly stirred me up. THAT is the song that I most want to hear David sing. I joined Bebe’s “One” campaign and if I could just hear it all from him, I think I could die happy. I agree with Skydancer1x in requesting from a savvy tech person (you know who you are) a video of all or the best of the “One” performances.

love that! have to confess I picked up my little compact computer speakers and held them to my ears for that part of the vlog trying to hear the little sounds coming out of his mouth..but gave up. I will settle on your word…enchanting.*sigh* So awesome and mesmerizing to watch him go into that world of music in his head.

Angelica; Sometimes I can’t find the right words to express the admiration, respect and amazement that I feel for being a fan of David but your words are always able to fill that void for me so beautifully and eloquently.

The thing that excited me the most about this vlog was when he said that he wants to try other musical languages. Pop is okay, but there are other genres out there that I feel would highlight his musical abilities more, and would appeal to a larger audience. Even though David is still young, he has the presence and instincts of a mature artist. During his first appearance on the Idol stage as a finalist, he sang Shop Around. There’s a line in that song that says, “just as sure as the wind’s gonna blow now”. The way he phrased it was so jazz tinged, I sat straight up in my chair and said out loud, he can sing jazz. I just hope and pray that he gets into some of that vibe, because he’d be so good at it. I think to really be considered a serious artist by the established music community, he’ll have to get away from being thought of as a Pop Star. It was alright when he was a kid, but, as the saying goes, it’s time to put off childish things and become a man. I think that’s what’s getting ready to happen, and I can hardly wait, because when it does, he will blow everyone away.

I saw this video recently on Eva Cassidy. It goes along with what David is about right now in his career. How they both approach music and fame are incredibly similar. It’s a bit long, but after watching this I came away with the feeling that she definitely has passed on something to the universe. I also believe that David received it through his musical soul.

Enjoyed David’s Vlog so much and even more after reading your recap Angelica and reading all the comments. Just finished watching Eva’s story Abrra. I had seen it once before but now after David’s vlog and talk of wanting musicians that spoke different musical languages and the path he is taking, I can definitely see more similarities to Eva than ever before. I feel honored as Eva’s fans did to be a fan of David’s for life. I love being on this journey. I couldn’t help but reflect on Michelle Kwan skating to Fields of Gold and how that influenced David. “I get chills just thinking about it” “I only feel that way when I sing” So exciting to think about what the future holds for David and us. …….Oh and then there’s that little tune at the end of the Vlog and being a witness to it.

Angelica! ♥♥♥ I’m speechless (yes me)! I love your article. Thank you so much for putting words to feelings. I consider myself so fortunate to have ‘fallen in love’ with such a wonderful, honest, straight-from-the-hip sort of artist as David. He takes us on such a journey every time he speaks or sings, that we will never want for adventure. Now if he starts singing in different languages (*sigh* *faints*) we will be traveling the world with the most talented tour guide one could ever imagine! I. can’t. wait!! Oh to be a fly on the wall at those band auditions–I can’t wait to be introduced to ‘the band’. They must be amazingly awesome to pass David’s specifications–I’m willing to bet he has some pretty strong requirements that have to be met.
I chuckled when he was ‘writing a song’ while talking and realized he couldn’t mutli-task. He is such a comic at times–without even trying to be. Love him, Love him.

There’s so much hope and joy in the new vlog! David is keeping his word by staying in touch with us, twice in one week, this time. He knows we’re out here waiting for him.
I’m proud of him for taking the time to write on his own rather than collaborate with other writers. “It’s time for me to find out who I am.”
And I’m excited about the covers he’ll be working on. Every cover David has ever done, from “When You Say You Love Me” to “Apologize” to “Stand By Me” to “The Riddle” to “One” to “Fields of Gold” and every Christmas song becomes untouchable when he finishes with it!

I have been working on a MGR since Thursday. Alas, the one clip we all want where he is singing along has something in the stream that causes it to halt halfway through the replay. It’s the only clip that acts this way. The other clips are “ok” but I consider the singing the best part of the video. That’s what MGR are, right?

Abrra, In regards to the clip with the singing halting, David is not allowing MGR’s of unfinished writings, of private writings with his fans. Something like no recording or pictures during M&Gs. Didn’t he mention that again? It’s like bad luck when you go under a ladder. Tread carefully. Happy April 2nd…I missed April 1st.

Great article…I too think he’s looking at expanding his “genre”..cuz Lord knows he doesn’t have just one! Speaking of One, this is my daughter’s video from Richmond..we were pretty close, and me and a another adult almost had to take a few teenagers out who were pushing..but we stayed D like! Audio is so-so but the black shirt was EPIC, and it was his 2nd solo stop.

Thanks everyone for commenting on the article and doing such a great job holding down the forte here while real life calls. It is Spring here in the lower south and I have been getting some much needed yard work done. Also re-potted several enormous plants that have needed that done for 3 years now. 😳 heh. Some of the roots had circled the base of the plants several times and one even had roots like large feet growing out the bottom that it was standing on. I’m surprised it didn’t walk away. haha. Been raking and cleaning and pruning too. Felt good to be outside the last couple of beautiful days.

Thank Angelica. I really hope they will televise. Maybe David might send a video to the show. If only I know exactly what date. I wish I have a filipino tv guide. I have a directv and I have 7 filipino channel. The time difference here in state and Philippines is 12 hours. Sometimes I get confuse when I set my DVR when it is David related. Last time he was there I was only able to catched few of his many televised interview.

Why is MCA Music (Universal Music Philippines Record Label) accepting his Barkada Choice Award? MCA is part of the Universal Music Group which is a record label. Do record labels normally accept awards on behalf of artists who are THEIR artists? Or has David signed with Universal? He’s never said he HASN’T signed with a label, indie or major. So far, we’ve all just speculated, which is what I’m doing here. But it is interesting.

Don’t know what meaning the MCA accepting the award for David implies. Even if he accepts by video, someone has to actually physically be handed the award. May just be a courtesy since he has no one in that country to represent him, ie, family, friend.

Jive is owned by SONY which is why David had SONY handlers when he went out of the country to promote his music. But with Jive out of the picture now, hmmm….

In comment #69 I embedded that particular emoticon as I usually do a picture. Idk why but wordpress reserves embedding pics in comments for Admn only. But there are some emoticons that can be produced with a combination of symbols that you can use in your comments.
For example, here’s wink 😉 for which I typed a semi colon and a closing parenthesis.
For a smile 🙂 I use a colon and a closing parenthesis.

That latest vlog really was amazing. I was astonished that he let us watch a bit of the creative process. I’m also very curious about the band now too. He sounded very excited.
I don’t know what it is about southern Utah and David Cook (nothing against him)…but I hear him almost everyday on the radio here. And I never hear our David. They play Cook’s old stuff and they never played any of David’s new album.

Thank you for the clarification. I was confused and must admit, just a little excited about the possibility…but whatever David is doing or not doing is OK with me. Even if it is excruciatingly & emotionally draining for me. I’m just way too old for all these topsy-turvey up & down roller-coaster rides I’ve been on for the last 3 years with no evidence it will change to a smooth coasting bullet train instead. It was then that I noticed American Idol alum David Archuleta nearby. He sang the National Anthem before the start of the Nationwide Series race the day before so it was cool to see that he came back the next day to see the Sprint Cup race too. He was standing right next to me so I asked him if I could take his picture and then he asked the people he was with if he looked OK. They assured him he looked great. So I snapped the shot (at right). Doesn’t he look like he’s 10-years-old? You wouldn’t think he’s going to turn 21 this year.
