Good Place
Posted by betsy on Tuesday, March 29, 2011
It’s been almost four months since David gifted us with his masterpiece, TOSOD. A project that we all know he poured his heart into, making his personal thoughts public. He wanted music that he could not only sing, but relate to. I still consider it new and one of the best things he’s ever done to date. There are songs that I will never tire of, songs I listen to every day. Good Place is one of them. (Ok, it’s at the top of my list)
Β
I love every word, every single bar of music, every breath. (I am feeling its grace)
I really want to hear David sing this song live. Of all the millions of songs in this great big world, this is the one I want.
I remember the first time I heard it. It was love at first listen, which rarely happens. (For me, anyway) I may need an intervention, lol.
p.s. I still want to embroider some of the lyrics to this song on the front of a t-shirt. Can’t decide on which ones though – it would end up taking over the whole thing. π
David Archuleta- Good Place Lyrics
I donβt know what Iβm doing here
How I landed in this space
But itβs a good placeAnd I donβt wanna mess it up
Make mistakes or say too much
βCause itβs a good placeYou find it
You hold it
You feel its graceThese are words I wanna say
Every hour of every day
These are words that say how good it feels
To be here with you today
I hope itβs not too late (I hope itβs not too late)
I hope itβs not too lateIβve been silent up to now
Iβve been going with the flow
Wherever that goesBut somethingβs screaming down inside
Makes me want to close my eyes
And hear the echoYou find it
You know it
Donβt make it waitThese are words I wanna say
Every hour of every day
These are words that say how good it feels
To be here with you today
I hope itβs not too lateβCause I donβt wanna waste another summer
I donβt wanna wait until I fall
I could be a memory tomorrow
I could be nothing at allI donβt know what Iβm doing here
How I landed in this space
But itβs a good placeThese are words I wanna say
Every hour of every day
These are words that say how good it feels
To be here with you today
I hope itβs not too lateOh, yeah
I hope itβs not too late
Which song on TOSOD does this to you? Which song makes you want to close your eyes and lay down with just that sound in your head? Do you have a favorite? If so, tell us what makes that song or songs special to you. And vote for the top 3 songs you love the most (and need to hear live) below. β₯ β₯ β₯

The first time I listened to My Kind Of Perfect, my husband was in the room listening too. Although he isn’t a fan of David, he said “That’s a really nice song. I can picture it in a play on Broadway.”
I was happy he liked it too but for me it was so beautiful, so David. Right from his heart to mine. That is just the kind of girl I imagine David to marry. I listened to it until all the words were in my head. I still love it just as much!

Good Morning~I wish I could be ‘original’ but I have to say that Good Place was the song that first jumped off the album & grabbed my heart & hasn’t let go yet..most likely never will. Those words “you find it, you hold it, you feel its grace” brought instant tears to my eyes. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a song that touches me the way this one does and, of course, David’s beautiful/mellow lower register just does that to me anyway. I agree with you, Betsy, that TOSOD is David’s finest work to-date. Every single song has moments that touch your heart in some way & encourage one to appreciate life. Knowing this was David’s intention while creating this beautiful masterpiece for his fans, I hope he knows just how much we cherish it. My three favorite songs from the album are ‘Good Place’, ‘Falling Stars’ & ‘My Kind of Perfect’. Oh, and by the way, when David sings ‘Good Place’ in concert, boxes of tissue should be available at the door! May I take this moment to just say THANK YOU David, once again, for all the hard work & love you put into this incredible album. I’ll treasure it forever. β€

I have lots of favorites on the album — narrowing it to three was darn near impossible. I chose Good Place, MKOP and Parachutes and Airplanes (which grew on me late in the game.) Other favorites are, well, every other song. I don’t listen to Good Place every time I put on the album but when I do listen, it puts ME in such a good place. Nothing like being reminded of the grace in appreciating what we have.

Oooh, I couldn’t help but get out of lurkdom to join this discussion.
I’ve been pretty vocal about my fave in TOSOD which is Falling Stars. It is the one song which I would love, love, love to see David sing live in a concert. I have written a long comment about it several articles ago.
This isn’t to say that it is the only song from TOSOD which I love, because I am enamored by the whole album, much more than his debut album. But if I have to narrow my choices down to three, the other songs I would especially like to see him perform LIVE are:
Look Around. At first listen, LA was a bit too consistent sounding for me since it is basically a very fast song and very techno-sounding. I’m pretty sure David was trying to experiment with the arrangement, because it brought to mind influences of Imogen Heap and Owl City. Then again David was in his element with his tongue-twisting turns in this song — probably inspired somehow by Jason Mraz’s glib-singing. But with several listens and attempts at singing along with it, I’ve realized that it is a song that requires such a high energy level. It is the one song I’d like to see David perform live with the appropriate backing synthesizers.
Stomping The Roses. When I first saw this track title, it amused me with a puzzlement because it sounded so un-Davidlike. And true to it’s title, the song is rebellious to a delightful fault. The opening beat is very quirky, and the lyrics are very witty. I must say that of all the songs, this has the most unexpectedly unpredictable but ingenious phrasing, and that I am in awe of David’s rendition of this song. For it to have been the last song added to the album, I take my hat off to David that he did an incredible, incredible job of it with Bryce Avary. I have never heard David sing lyrics with such emphatic gregariousness. We can all surmise about what and who the song is all about, and that just gives it all the more flavorful interest as David shines in his vocal brilliance but this time with surprising attitude and defiance. If he acted out the song the way he sang it, he could win an award for his performance.
My Kind of Perfect. This song just turns me to mush and makes me teary-eyed every time I listen to it. Oh, and how he sings it! This song is similar thematically to “To Be With You” but is lyrically and melodically more appropriate to his situation and age. Both are powerful songs in their own unique ways, and I attribute it all to David’s genius.

Too hard to chose a favorite!…it always depends on my mood and what is going on in my life. However, upon first listen, I was immediately drawn to the heartfelt yearnings of MKOP, the fun quirky PandA, and yes, like Betsy, Good Place had me right at the start too.

good morning! I, indeed, love them all, but it was still easy to vote. Falling Stars grabs me everytime. It has that element of heartache in his voice that is so unusual in other artists. Sad is part of a happy life and the words say that to me. I also love Look Around and have from the first time I heard the kooky introduction, but the lyrics also grab me, especially “You have to see the hand for it to pull you out.” Soo true.. And then there is my beloved child, Something Bout Love. I know many of you don’t like it (as much),, but when I hear it, and it’s PEFECT lyrics, I just soar with Joy. I feel like I do on the Oregon Coast on a typical cold, and windy day! Exilarated! Hopeful, and really really glad David was born. π

Betsy, you’ve created quite a challenge here. To pick a favorite top 3 is awfully hard. I can see/hear David’s challenges to us and his thoughts in every one of the songs on the CD. I have to say that “Things Are Gonna Get Better” is one that I listen to alot–the message is for me and brings me from a hard place when I need it. It’s like my anthem. My most favorite, however, is TOSOD. I love the beat, the message, and the visual of David singing it. “Who I Am” and “Look Around” are tied. I love the positive and challenging messages in them. Like Kaycee, ‘it always depends on my mood and what is going on in my life’. David’s words have had an influence on my days and way of life since ‘Imagine’. I have a serious suspicion that it’s going to be that way for a lifetime.

Hi! Well, it is hard to chose favourites from such an amazing album but one that has always stood out for me is TOSOD! It reminds me a bit of Touch my Hand – another amazing concert song. I saw David singing TOSOD live in Dallas and it was incredible!! The energy, the beat, the fun was contagious! You can see that he really loves to sing it and is enjoying himself tremendously! Something Bout Love is another song that sounds amazing live – such a great beat and of course, his vocals are beautiful.
Of course, Who I am, Look Around,Good Place and Things are gonna get better are all wonderful too … π

Love the article Betsy, but this is like Mission Impossible for me! I too, listen to my TOSOD songs everyday. The Other Side of Down gets me motivated for the day so I like it in the morningβ₯βΊ
(Elevator, and Who I am, fall into that category for me too.)
Good Place fills my heart with gratitude.
Complain, helps me when I am fretting over petty things that don’t matter.
My Kind Of Perfect, well, it is just beautiful and so perfect in every way,so honest, and so David.
Falling Stars stands alone in its perfection. Gorgeous vocals. Maybe its the “manliness” of it for lack of a better word.David shows his vocal talents here in a new way.He stretches for the sky,and does such an incredible job making this song so beautiful. E-man must have fallen off his chair! I was lucky enough to see him perform this live in Dallas. It was stunning, and THUD worthy! Gah!
Well, I am over 3 favorites here. I am with Kaycee..”Too hard to choose a favorite! ”
For voting purposes, gonna say TOSOD,FS, MKOP

I love them all! Especially the ones that David had a hand in writing. I listen to the whole album in the car vs the radio! I picked The Other Side of Down,Look Around and My Kind of Perfect as three favorites. Love the messages in these songs and of course David’s singing. I’ve had a little difficulty adjusting to what Eman had David do with his voice in Falling Stars although I do love how heartfelt David is in singing the message of the song.
Thanks Betsy for your article and yes it is a Good Place. I always think of this as a song for his fans and how surprised he is to have all these opportunities.
None that I dislike!!

I’m with you Skydancer…this is a Mission Impossible!
I can never choose my favorite song because it does depend on the day and my mood….!
I have always loved MKOP. Just a perfect song.
TOSOD is also one I have loved since I first heard it. It makes me know that I can do anything…just put one foot in front of the other.
Today I think my favorite is Things Are Gonna Get Better! I guess I say this to myself a lot. When things go wrong or just sad things happen to me I have a tendency to say to myself..”Things Are Gonna Get Better”…and they usually do.
I love every song on the album tho but today these are the ones that stand out…now tomorrow it may be different.

Thanks for the great and interesting comments!
Annie – MKOP is so very beautiful. I heard it for the second time in a car with friends on the way to see him, and all of the sudden it killed me with it’s wistfulness. (The line “why I haven’t met you” has such- idk – yearning and sincerity)Then we heard him sing it live the next day. It’s truly his.
Jane and Lou Lou – I love them all as well. It’s hard to choose from all the perfection. π
Marylee – Seeing David perform GP live would be a beautiful thing.
Amy – I’d buy one of those shirts!
Kathy H – P&A did that to me, too. His voice is so rich on that. The way he sings the word Blue on that song!
Ascphil – It took me awhile to get into Look Around. Then one day, BAM. And I’ve loved it ever since. I am quite particular to the lyric “You’ve got to see the hand for it to pull you out.” GENIUS
Kaycee – My mood often dictates the song as well. π But I love to cook to TOSOD and dance around the kitchen. (It’s that reggae groove, lol) My husband finds it funny. π
Poof – Falling Stars showcases that cry in his voice. I love it.
Tawna – TAGGB – It is a very inspiring song, and it inspired someone to make an anti-bullying song to it. I love David for putting this on the album.
Fiona – Love the energy of TOSOD – when we saw him sing it in New Albany, he did his little dance and was having so much fun with it. Clearly a song he loves to sing.
Skydancer – “Good Place” fills my heart with gratitude.” Yep. Perfectly said.
Heidijoy – Listening in the car is the greatest! My cd is always in there.
Nanaweize – This is what is so great about his album. Different songs – all unlike each other in sound, but beautifully balanced. Genius, I tell ya!!

OK, Iβm gonna start this comment by saying itβs an impossible task to choose just one. I think there are about 8 songs that tie for first with me. It depends on my mood and I love them all for different reasons. Right now, itβs Who I AM. I just love that one, and the other one I love right now is Look Around. β₯ Hmmm β¦ βpaint it over if your world is gray.β That is such a great lyric for me. Than again, My Kind Of Perfect just jumps right to my heart. So I guess if I have to choose the top 3, right now those would be my choice. The others I love watching him perform are Stomping The Roses and Falling Stars.
But keep in mind, it could change tomorrow lol just because I love them all so much.β₯

Betsy! I love your love of Good Place and TOSOD! Love your article β₯
When I first purchased TOSOD on itunes my granddaughter put it on her ipod and listened to TOSOD before I did because she wanted to guess which would be my favorite songs. While she listened to each song she would tell me how much I would like each one as I followed along with the titles. When she got to Good Place she said, “Now this one is going to make you cry”, she was pretty good at guessing my level of likes because they’re all my favorite depending on week or day but she was spot on about Good Place, this song just tugs at my heart and brings on the tears.
So if I’d have to pick 3 right at this that I NEED to hear live it’s Good Place, Look Around, and Who I Am.

This is a very interesting article that we all should read. Here’s an excerpt. It also has 12 steps of what you should be doing as an artist in the music industry during these times.
Lefsetz Letter – First in Music Analysis
In a news cycle on steroids everybody gets five seconds, not fifteen minutes. And then youβre forgotten, for months, if not forever. How long does a movie play? If youβre not constantly stunting, the mainstream doesnβt care. But the mainstream doesnβt count, your audience does.
Before you sign anything, do anything, look at it through the eyes of your audience. Is it going to bring your core closer to you or push it away? And donβt think casual fans can replace your core. Casual fans come and go. The core is there forever, if you treat it right.
Amanda Hocking? People love to champion the underdog. Sell out to the man and they abandon you. Youβre no longer theirs. We canβt relate to the bozo in the head office. Heβs ripping us off, heβs all about the money, you made a deal with HIM? You donβt need us anymore, weβre done.

The sign of a really good album is when fans can’t pick a favorite. How can we, when we love each song for different reasons? I’ve read tweets from those who say they heard TOSOD for the first time, through a friend, and they love it. Of course they love it; it’s a collection of feel-good songs. I always feel better after hearing it.
Betsy, thanks so much for this article and for bringing us back to the music.
Argggh it’s so hard. Falling Stars, My Kind of Perfect and Something ‘Bout Love, with STR and TOSOD next. That’s not to say that I don’t like the rest; I love them all.
But it was love at first listen when I first heard a snippet of Falling Stars when Eman teased us with it in a bubble tweet. The Wichita video sealed the deal for me. The heartbreak, the pain, the loneliness, the cry, and ache in David’s voice, and then the falsetto, the crescendo at the end….The song deeply affects me.
David Archuleta is THE master storyteller and he tells it like it is, not afraid to be vulnerable to get his message across; one of the many reasons he is so loved by his fans.
The simplicity of lyrics and melody together with David’s beautiful vocals and delivery is what constantly draws me to My Kind of Perfect.
Been a fan of Something ‘Bout Love from the start and was so disappointed when Jive didn’t promote this lovely song which should have been out there for people to hear, with it’s message that love can be painful sometimes but it’s always worth it. I was sure it would be a mega hit! Arrrgggh again!

I can not choose, for my david archuleta is a puzzle, if I choose a piece, would be incomplete without the next piece.
Choose a song is to choose every moment of your life. Each song represents a decision, to an election, a thought, a laugh, a dream, a Christmas, holidays, friends, fans, your home, your family.
No, I think you have asked me an impossible job. And for obvious reasons that puzzle has not yet been completed and if God helps us, never completed, because David is full of surprises.

Betsy great pic at the top! He looks a little different to me. Like the planes of his face are more defined. Maybe he lost a little fullness in his face. Dunno what it is. But he looks so very handsome.
If I had to pick three, I would have to go with 1) TOSOD (he killed it in Dallas and New Year’s Day 2) Stomping the Roses and 3) Look Around/Who I Am (I just couldn’t choose between these two).
Thing is I know he is going to change all that when he gets out there and performs some of these live. Oh, David singing any of his songs live is a WHOLE DIFFERENT BALLGAME! I am so looking forward to that. π

Great thread Betsy! I love reading all the whys behind the love for each song.
If I had, had to pick, Good Place probably be it for me. Just love the sentiment of the song, appreciating and embracing where you are at.
The rest of my favorites, in no order, just lumped together under Amazing:
TOSOD, the simplicity of the message is what I love about it. Itβs easy to get caught up in lifeβs complexities and this just puts it out thereβ¦ I can stay stuck or I can move on. THAT we do have control over, and knowing that alone can be very empowering. (really wish the βhaβ was on the album)
Elevator, I liked the album version, but LOVE the soulful Z100 version, which I now listen to exclusively.
STR, agree with you ascphil. This one has a different flavor and I love it. He gets to kinda rock out a bit with this one and I just love it all…the lyrics, the melody, one I can jam to (now thereβs a sight for ya.) Grand Rapids performance..yeah baby.
Really like WIA, love his voice in the bridge and the little musical cascade in backup vocal at 2:49-:54.
FS, achingly beautiful. What more can you say.
LA, love the clever lyrics to this song. Much to ponder here.
Complain, great message. Love the guitar and his backup oohwas, whoas and yeah yeahs.
MKOP, βthey say, give it timeβ¦β,the yearning, I can hardly take it. That voice is made for love songs.
And the obvious, the voice. It caresses you, it surrounds you, excites you, soothes you. Leaves you wanting more, and more is still not enough. I know itβs not a probability, but I often wish that somehow, someday we could hear more of the songs he wrote for this album.
Sorry for the length. I know this thread wasnβt intended for a play by play of every song, but after actually writing out what I love about these songs it reinforces to me again what a gift he has given us. If you did not know where his heart was before, all one has to do is just LISTEN to this album.

Loved the article! “You feel it’s grace” are the four words that touch me the most in TOSOD, from the first time I heard it and still now…but the whole album is so special! If I had to pick 3, and this is really hard, I’d say….no, I can’t pick just 3. I do love The Other Side of Down, Look Around, Complain, Things Are Gonna Get Better….nevermind…I love them all.
The other words that really strike me when I hear TOSOD are in Look Around, “close the window tighter but it’s raining on the inside”. I think those lyrics are so insightful. Sometimes we want to withdraw from others because we don’t want to be hurt, or we’re afraid…but what’s inside us should be what determines our choice to be happy or determined or courageous. We can’t hide away and close our eyes. We’ve got to look around. Smart lyrics.
Ohhh, David Archuleta, you’ve turned us all into philosophers, music critics, lovers of lyrics, and “go-getters”! Keep on putting one foot in front of the other! We’re right behind you! It’s like that cell phone service commercial…you’re in front asking “can you hear me now?”..and we’re behind you every step of the way. For a moment, we all seemed to stop and look at each other…wondering if you were going to keep walking or if you would change direction. We’re still here…and I think our journey still has a lot of “Good Places” ahead!

Sorry, been away some and lurking some.
Just can’t express how awesomely talented and creative all the writers and poets are here. No matter what the topic — tragic news from the other side of the world or the hopeful and uplifting David events — The Voice posters find all the right words.
As for TOSOD, I must go along with the general consensus — choosing three favourite tracks is definitely mission impossible. I have to agree though that Good Place is very special — such heartfelt words sung poignantly and so beautifully by David.
Gladys – Love the analogy of David and his music as pieces of a puzzle — hoping I’m around long enough to see and hear how everything fits — a fascinating adventure.

Susie, you’re not being offensive at all. I got rid of a beautiful Great Dane who didn’t like my first husband,(that was a little clue) and a year later we divorced. To this day I wish I had kept the dog and gotten rid of the husband instead. Still miss that dog.
Speaking of Look Around, that is one of my top 3 along with TOSOD and Falling Stars. Like Paula I love the line,
“Shut the window tight but itβs raining on the inside” and love the way he says, tigheeet. That song is deep and with a driving beat like a, like a whip cracking or something and you feel like you better get up and look around and open your eyes to what you have before it’s too late. Life is not a dress rehearsal. Like the line from the musical Auntie Mame, “Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death.” I love that message and every line of this song is golden.
TOSOD is my very most favorite song on the album. It’s just so upbeat and the lyrics are fine. Sublime.
Down, Down, Down, Down, Down, Down, Down
Here I am with all these questions hanging from my ceiling low
One by one they all keep telling me I told you so
Everywhere I turn I see red lights flashing over my head
Oh no, oh no, oh no
HAH!! (I always do that part for him when I’m listening to the cd.) π
In a whirl-wind spinning, yeah somehow it knocked me off my feet
But I know better than to let it get the best of me…
In the sky, I’m standing under all I see is endless rain
I think I spot a silver lining hiding in the gray…
Down-own, Down-whoa-ah-ow-own
Down-own, Down-own, Down-whoa-ah-ow-own<<<< Lub dat β₯
And. he. rocks. this. song. live.
Falling Stars. Emo on steroids/testosterone/thud.
Oh betsy, thanks for a great discussion-provoking post. Guess I got a little carried away in my love for this album. I love Good Place too and everything else.

Even though I love all the songs, my favorite from the start is “Good Place”. His voice in that song puts me in a good place.
When I first listened to the songs and was mentally rating them, the 2 least favorite songs foe me were “Falling Stars” and “Complain”. I was so surprised when checking on the songs that David wrote, that he didn’t write these two. I love them all, but have a special feeling for Good Place and Falling Stars and Complain is a little lower on my list.
I hope he will have some tour dates soon. But I feel lucky to have seen him sing “Things Are Gonna Get Better” at Jerry’s telethon and “TOSOD”, “Something ‘Bout Love” and “Falling Stars” in Wichita. Oh, to hear the rest of them live…wow! To hear him sing anything at anytime…live…wow! Sorry, my ADD is acting up…haha

I love all the songs on David’s TOSOD cd so much but these are 3 of my favorites: Good Place, Something bout Love and Complain. I love “Something bout Love” because of the lyrics and when you are in the car it is fun to listen to. Even though David didn’t have a part in writing “Complain” it still fits into the theme of his cd and his voice and the guitar playing go so well together. “Good Place” is fantastic for the reasons everyone else said.

#56 djafan, I was thinking the same thing about David’s face looking a little different. I think it’s that he’s starting to look more like a man and less like a boy. That’s a good thing though. He’s still the most handsome young man out there, and it just keeps getting better. As the song I’m listening to right now says, Things are Gonna Get Better. If that’s even possible.
As for my favorite song, it changes everytime I listen to the CD. Usually, I settle on a few, Who I Am, Look Around, and Complain. Now, MKOP just came on and I’m adding that one too. UGH,I CAN’T CHOOSE!!!

I, like many of you, love all of TOSOD. Each song has something special about it.
I feel so blessed to have been able to see David perform some of these songs “live” in December in both Dallas for the Children’s Hospital benefit (TOSOD, SBL, Elevator, Falling Stars, My Kind of Perfect) and in San Antonio (Falling Stars) for Kaleidoscope. As always, David brings a whole new energy to each song when it is performed live. I loved hearing each of these songs live.
The one song that I long to hear live/in-person is “Things Are Gonna Get Better”. This is the “theme song” for my life right now. With elderly in-laws experiencing major health issues, our home a/c going out and no idea how to pay for a new one (we live in Texas and must have it), my car completely breaking down, and myself falling and spraining both wrists and then catching the flu 2 days later, the last 2 wks have been a real challenge. But I know that it will all get better and God will take care of us and provide for us. I love the reminder from David that we need to hang on and keep going.

I picked TOSOD because it’s such an all around good song. He does is so well in concert. Gets the crowd pumped and stoked! I picked MKOP which is my all time favorite. I sing this song LOUDLY and never miss a lyric while riding in the car! It’s a deeply personal song for David. He tells us how confusing it is to know when love has arrived. I like Look Around very much for the quirkiness of the music and the lyrics. “Cut the ribbon if it starts to fray” is a line that caught my attention on the first listen. It’s a philosophical life strategy I have found helpful π No matter how tough things seem, they can always get better. Starting over and giving a situation another try is good advice.
Thanks Betsy for initiating this good discussion.

There are 4 girls in our family–myself and my three daughters. I mentioned a while back that we had an impromptu discussion about our favorite songs on TOSOD. It was interesting, because they are all different, with the exception of MKOP…which everyone of us included in our top 3 favorites. We are all in different phases of life: middle age awesomeness, college, high school, and elementary school. My 10 year-old loves Look Around and Who I Am. My high school daughter loves Stomping the Roses and The Other Side of Down. My college-age daughter loves Elevator and Things Are Going to Get Better. And, I love Good Place and Parachutes and Airplanes. We almost have the entire album covered between the 4 of us!
Parachutes and Airplanes is one of those songs that doesn’t get a lot of love…but for some reason, I just love it! It’s that song I turn on when I need a bit more bounce in my step…which at my age, means all the time! Haha! I don’t know–maybe it’s the light bouncy rhythm, the fun random lyrics, or his vibrato, fslsetto, or phrasing! Who knows!? It just makes me happy.
FG…I approve of the hair too!

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, performance that builds slowly and burns up that stage, in fact the whole theater by the time he’s through. There are some talented people on idol this season, but there is only one David Archuleta and there never will be another like him.
Another thing…did you see Pia in her post-performance little talk tell how she was going to be singing River Deep Mountain High if she got voted back next week? Have any singers ever done that before, tell what song the viewer can look forward to as an incentive to vote her back? I never have. It just shocked me a little and seemed a bit unfair to the rest of the contestants to dangle that carrot to the public. JMO.

And although the heart itself is breaking, its power heals me as naturally as my next breath.
Or his.
(And… Pia my dear… I am not even going to talk about phrasing. Which, with you is skilled but more obvious, where with him it is so delicately and firmly sculpted: both as soft and as strong as the angel wings they used to paint on his shoulders.)

Pia did a good job, IMO.
David was phenomenal.
He sang the same song with angst and determination.
He told the story with his whole body; with the intensity in his eyes and the determination in his walk to the stage.
He made the audience believe.
They can compare contestants to him all they want; but he is untouchable.
I enjoyed tonight’s AI because I was a huge fan of Elton John in the seventies and eighties. Each time a contestant sang one of Elton’s songs, I wished it was David up there, singing all of them…Your Song, Daniel, Tiny Dancer, Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting, Bennie and The Jets, Candle In The Wind.
Yes, a full concert of Elton John’s songs, sung by David would be divine.

ah..yes. I’ve been there, often. His voice is like sound you feel as much as hear because of the emotion he puts into it. There is something that passes between you and him and suddenly, you’re not on the outside anymore. That is genius.
MT, I heard his voice in my head while she was singing tonight too and while she did a beautiful job, that missing factor of a vital, living connection is missing.
They really should retire that song on that stage like bluesky says. Yet I knew, as sure as the sun will never go down on him that someone would sing it on Elton John week. She looked good, she sounded good, she did great, and you know what?

Pia is one of my favorites on AI this season, but I have been concerned about her seeming inability to connect with the audience. My daughter said the same thing. My heart sank when I found out she was going to sing DLTSGDOM because I knew what it can sound like when sung by a master communicator. Despite the fact that she is gorgeous and has a beautiful voice, I did not feel any connection and it made me very sad.
I knew I would have to listen to David’s rendition so I got into my music files and watched X-Factor’s HD version of David’s performance. Absolutely no comparison!!! I got lost in the vortex and watched it again, and again, and again, and again…and then I watched Love Me Tender, In This Moment, Angels, Imagine, and…

I hope they keep singing the same cover songs that David has sung on Idol. The ripple effect is that David’s name is mentioned in all the blogs as one who has sung the song on Idol before them. There is a rash of Google alerts today mentioning David:
“Singing a ballad yet again was Pia, who belted out “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me”- a song with a lot of Idol history (previously sung by runners-up: Justin Guarini, Clay Aiken, and David Archuleta).”
Interesting. Could this be a foreshadowing of her ultimate rank in the finale?

High praise for David being compared to Steve Perry. So MusicfaninMo tweeted this comparison.
“@DavidArchie One more. You do realize that you have the greatest voice in popular music since Steve Perry. You know that donβt you?”
Checked out Wikipedia for Steve Perry. Granted I don’t know the sources of some of this info. so I take everything on wiki as probable til proven otherwise.
And I wonder if David could be like Steve Perry meshing some major great voices and creating his own style, in David’s case like Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Marvin Gaye (to just name a few).
Here’s the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Perry_%28musician%29
And this is some of what the article had to say.
Steve Perry (born Stephen Ray Perry;[1] January 22, 1949) is an American singer and songwriter best known as the lead vocalist of the band Journey from 1977β1987 and 1995β1998. Perry had a successful solo career throughout the late eighties and early nineties.
Singing voice
Sam Cooke has been widely recognized as a major influence on Steve Perry’s vocal style.[14]
He ranked number 76 in Rolling Stone Magazine’s “100 Greatest Singers of all Time.” He is supposed to have a high-tenor-low-bass voice.[15] Queen guitarist Brian May said in a 2007 interview “Perry is a truly luminous singer, in my opinion β a voice in a million”.[16]
In a recent interview, former bassist, Sony record executive, and American Idol judge Randy Jackson opined that “Other than Robert Plant, there’s no singer in rock that even came close to Steve Perry”. Jackson goes on to say “The power, the range, the tone β he created his own style. He mixed a little Motown, a little Everly Brothers, a little Zeppelin.”
Interesting ideas. Time will only tell. And there is a very thirsty bunch of fans out there just waiting! π

And Randy played bass in the band Journey.
And I haven’t really kept perfect track, but TOSOD seems to be a big favorite. Along with MKOP.
Remember last year, when David was writing songs for his new project? He tweeted about it all the time. It would be so cool to know what songs he was talking about when he would say that he had just finished writing one, or recording one. He was so excited.

#101 Betsy – Randy Jackson was a fan of David’s I believe. One of his comments I remember well was how David could sing anything. I do wonder if we will ever hear about all of that time when he was putting the album together. I can only imagine how he was so vulnerable to share his thoughts and feelings and excited at the same time to share his songs. I have faith in David’s depth of talent, calculated risktaking and his determination to sing to us, come what may, as he knows how much we long for it and as he also longs to live his life singing and serving the greater good.
Gosh, I miss seeing him live. It’s a longing for that connection.
As Bluesky said so perfectly: “With DA, I am invited in. In so deeply that it is as though I sit within his heart, hearing its beat, feeling the warmth flowing around me. And although the heart itself is breaking, its power heals me as naturally as my next breath.β

Thank you Ram for answering in comment #100 just who Steve Perry is. Some of the fans on this site were determined to ask David to sing **One** and a card with many names was presented to David with that special request. So perhaps David (in our wildest imaginations) remembered that. Therefore your request was noticed and may be heard in the near future.
From my comment #68, Steve Perry, MusicfanMO @DavidArchie. Just heard you cover a piece of βOneβ. Stunning!! And that is coming from one of the biggest U2 fans.

SF, thanks for posting the video!
Interesting indeed, world tour? maybe? sing in different languages?
Whatever it is I’m liking what I hear and see. The piano, the singing, you could see the creative juices in his expressions. To think of the whirlwind of the last 3 years David’s life has been is incredible. This foundation building is giving us a lesson in patience but if he keeps these vlogs up, sharing his band sessions, David just being David every week or so like he has sure helps. π

Silverfox, Thank you for posting David’s vlog!
Ay ay ay Loved it! I only saw it once but YOWSA! Where do I start? The sound of his voice…what is that? And I mean when he speaks! There’s a soft subtle vibration there that is so soothing. I cant get past it. Do you hear it, too? He could read The Cat in The Hat to me and I’d have noooo problem. π
David talks of ‘shows’…SHOWS!!!!!!! And of giving the best SHOW to the fans! He’s taking charge to pick the band members and wants them all in one place. Wants to try new things in the shows too! Thinking of all the possible covers he could do.
It makes me so happy that he wants to stay connected with us. Two vlogs in five days! Loved the new piece he’s working on and the little bit of the melody he sang!
Going to watch it again and again.
Bye for now.

I keep wanting to “lift” the screen so he doesn’t have to keep looking down. π
Someday we will look back at these vlogs he’s done since he began constructing his Foundation and we will be in awe that we were “there at the beginning”, because it is his new BEGINNING and we are here, now. It is terribly exciting as well as excruciating as we wait for the “first floor” of his “Tower” to be completed, which in my “imagination” will be putting together the multi-cultural band. π

Loved the vlog. It’s rare that anybody ever gets a look at this. A true musical genius creating something beautiful just as the notion hits him.
I wonder what he was seeing as he was looking off to the side and smiling? Musical notes in his head?
Also so very interesting is his new concept of 5-6 different musical languages. He is getting deep into the metaphorical lately.
I have a feeling that the sound he will be creating will be unlike anything we have ever heard. It’s all there in his head.

Lynella, good grief! Thanks so much for that #104 video!
His first concert and that One was one of the best of that tour! Gads, his phrasing “well it’s too la-aate.. for…to-niiight”, crazy, just craazy! And I love the finger! If anyone with the know-how is compelled to make an MP3 of that or can tell me where I can download one I would be grateful. Dja, I got stuck in the One vortex after that too!
DLTSGDOM, beautiful young woman, beautiful voice, beautifully done. But the contrast is unmistakable. Hers left me feeling hollow. His filled me up. Genius, at 17.
Betsy, “I have a feeling that the sound he will be creating will be unlike anything we have ever heard. Itβs all there in his head”….me too.
I pretty much love every post in this thread. π

Lynella, I didn’t click on the One video earlier, knowing what the result would be. (stuck in the One vortex) Well, now I have, and I am. π
Emme, I agree, that phrasing, I just can’t anymore.
“You act like you never had looove, and you want me to go withooouuut.”
Nvm me. I know how this will end. All the best “Ones”, then my favorite “Angels'”, then the entire Grand Rapids set of videos (both concerts), then the best Crazys, my favorite Apologize, I think I will avoid the CFTH tour entirely or I will never get out, then Manchester Fall 09 WFY, YEDL, then, if I can, the lovely New Albany.
Of course, I will not fail to watch Contigo or a Como La Flor or two. Or TBWY, Allentown and Utah, Kendra’s show.
Ummm. Did I just reveal how nuts I am?
Thanks for all the comments on the article, guys.
I was overcome by Good Place one night and had to get it out.

my sentiments exactly.
This vlog is just amazing. This journey is amazing. It is now all about the man,his music, and his fans.Back to basics, he is peeling back and slowly uncovering the layers of genius that lie within that gorgeous head of his.We know it is there, we always have..and because of that, I believe we have truly earned his trust. This vlog is a treasure.
anyone else feel like someone just opened a window in a stuffy room, and fresh air is flowing through and it feels wonderful?
I hope we get a future jam session vlog with David and his band. That would be so cool!

Who would of thought we’d be getting a lesson in construction and that the foundation is the most important part of it.
One, I didn’t know this song before David sang it. Betsy I know the vortex you speak of.
I keep coming back to this one.

Oh Dja I was there! Sayreville, WAS an epic show!
For all you lovers of “One”, here’s a little info. I spearheaded the “One” campaign and collected almost 100 letters from fans, asking David to puleeaze sing the whole song! Silverfox presented the letters to David at one of his solo shows. Shortly after, I received this note from David:
Then at the VIP in Atlantic City, I asked David if he remembers receiving the letters. He said he did and that he really likes the song and wasn’t sure but he might sing it one day.
