David Archuleta ~ Poetic Ponderings

Posted by djafan on Friday, March 11, 2011

Poem by davidstopsmyaging

Visualize

The boy’s young eyes
Before us, new, naive and strong
Slowly mending, comprehending
Understanding right from wrong.

The wave’s crash,
The moon glows,
The stars flash,
And time flows.

Young eyes now choose, they spark and know
They watch the world while melodies grow
The songs, they swim, they fall and rise
Within the soul of these young eyes

The wave’s crash
The moon glows,
The stars flash,
And time flows.

His eyes, they sing, they soar, inspire
They draw us in and raise us higher
The world will hear the melodies
The songs will know no boundaries

The world turns
The soul yearns
The eyes burn
The man learns

Learns to sift life’s grains of sand
To make the rough parts smooth, and when
He learns his strengths, with steady hand,
He gently throws caution to the wind.

He knows the strength of songs, of words
He knows his music will be heard
He knows this as surely as he breathes.

The young man’s spirit, his soul, his heart
This young man’s eyes
Visualize

What a beautiful poem…thank you, davidstopsmyaging.

And the top picture gives off such a serene and peaceful assurance that all is well with our ever-evolving David.

What a contrast to today’s tragedy in Japan. My heart-felt thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the earthquake and tsunami.

Also, thanks to all those who “happy danced” with me yesterday! We celebrated my daughters 18th birthday yesterday, and our joy was beyond measure, knowing that more birthdays were yet to come for her.

What an absolutely beautiful poem and very fitting photos to accompany it. Man, I wish I could write that kind of poetry. Mine are usually silly.

And speaking of silly, my pondering has produced a story that I have posted on my blog. I used the titles of 158 songs that David has sung. If you need a small break from all of today’s incredible sadness, please check it out. Or, save it for another day when lightheartedness can prevail.

One of the most heartwarming poems I’ve ever read..& the picture chosen by Angelica is magnificent & those eyes..What more can I say about those eyes?! One of these days, I’ll get through a day without crying..no time soon it seems. Love you, David..constantly ‘pondering’ your next career move & all the incredible music you will bring us. ❤

Angelica…I know it’s been said before…You have a way with words.
But beyond just finding pretty, or “the right” words…you go to the heart of what you mean to say and do so artfully, while touching a universal chord. Really special, that.
    Tks for sharing.

Was just popping in…since “the news”…I’ve had a myriad of thoughts, wondering what it will mean, concern for David. My perspective goes back and forth, and bottom line, I know I don’t have a clue, and it’s his bizzznezz ’til he makes it anyone else’s, and I always support & respect that. He’s a person first to me.
I just like to hear the boy saang!(so sue me. 🙂 ) ..and also want him to be O.K. period.

So, for now was just doing checking of sites to make sure some of the DA touchstones remain. Since your homepage seemed partially missing yesterday (the comments on the last post and some front page content.) Glad to see it back to normal today.

    S’all for now~

Angelica, I remember when Ray, David’s first tour manager warned fans about looking into David’s eyes as a joke, but believe it’s no joke. Nice photo work.

Hey all…another quick “drive-by” posting, I just remembered to share…

Last night while watching Piers Morgan interview Kid Rock (pretty cool) he said something that made me think immediately of David. In response to asking “Kid” what he thought of the Biebs…his response was the standard gracious fare from the old dog to the young teen-bait…”There’s room for everybody, I met him once,(insert funny story), I don’t follow him but from what I hear he seems to have talent”, etc…

But he seemed weary as he said it and followed it with something to the effect of they can package and market these kids but… “I always say:
If it looks good, you’ll see it, if it sounds good you’ll hear it, if it’s marketed well you’ll buy it… but if it IS good, you’ll FEEL it.

David knows that. David does that. Made us (all from different backgrounds, ages, musical tastes) feel it…in spades.
Kid said he worried there wasn’t enough of that around with these kids…and, frustrated, I thought…there is a “kid” out there who “gets that” well beyond his years…he deserves respect, and the best shot at his dream.

First, love your blog name…(he’s done that for me too!). And your poem is so beautiful, I can’t even find the words to tell you just how beautiful and how you perfectly you “see” David.
He will love it when he reads it and he will read it. Of that, I’m so very sure. 😉

    Amb4dja,

I feel very soon David will get the respect & credibility he deserves. I think it will happen when an ESTABLISHED artist realizes WHO David Archuleta really is and what he’s about musically and will invite David on tour. When that happens, look out world, because David’s voice will soar with no boundaries as described in davidstopsmyaging’s beautiful poem. It’s inevitable and just a matter of time.

David is busy writing new music..,possibly for a new EP or CD, needed if he’s signing with a new major or independent label? His other albums were projects with & for the old label. He can still tour, but a new label would not fund or promote a tour for David to sing songs they do not own. I think David will always sing songs from his albums which we all love, but IMO, he NEEDS new music as he is, in a sense, starting over with a new direction. I can hardly wait to hear what he’s been working on. With all that he’s experienced, the ups & downs, I’m imagining some soul stirring music from David.

I love the poem. When we can’t listen to David sing, stories and poems like this one, sound so good and actually in the same tone of his songs.

I have come to realize, that David has brought out in us any artistry that we possess whether it is in pictures or writings and maybe for the first time we are showing it.

You brought up some good points. David’s trip to India, for example had to have affected him and surely this will be reflected in his new music. Like you, I can’t wait for the new stuff!

But at the same time, I can’t help feeling a little cheated. And I know this sounds selfish but because of Jive’s lack of promo, as a diehard fan, I so wanted a full tour for TOSOD! The songs are amazing! Except for a few cities like Dallas, Anaheim and cities that were lucky to have radio promo (which did no good, by the way!), most of David’s fanbase has not seen him perform these songs live on tour. The Sayreville crowd, for example…NY is a huge part of David’s fanbase and the only song from TOSOD that he sang here was SBL at Arthur Ashe Tennis Stadium last summer. I’ll wait until his next tour and hope he sings my favorites from TOSOD but I had to get that rant out. Okay, rant over. LOL

Remember to join us tonight for Spanish chat at 9PM EST. Abs has the night off so I’ll be in the studio, in case anyone wants to hear a favorite or two.

I agree and have often envisioned this happening …we’ve seen it in glimpses from established artists’ reactions to him..the ones outside the tween mentality and AI bubble who “discover” him…as he moves forward from that bubble now I’m hoping he’s open to more of the right people, be it performers to tour with, visionary/indie producers and all that.

But, I can’t help but agree with you Bebe #24…the other night after listening to TOSOD, I lamented that we were gypped (and so was he) of a tour for some great material…and I don’t see yet how it can work that he sings those…unless he gets to buy them. But I think there are ways it can happen.. we’ll see.

I am feeling optimistic, if not still unsettled by all the unknown.

On another note…I just took a lovely walk down Idol Season 7 DA memory lane in full chronological order, (including the dreaded group numbers clips I’d forgotten!) thanks to
The Voice Unplugged, tkuverymuch. Just sublime.
Then the funniest thing happened…the boyfriend (that teases me relentlessly about my DA addiction, and takes no part in it usually) sat and watched the whole thing with me, and talked about him being a phenomenon and one of the top 3 Idols to ever grace that stage (ok I wasn’t going to nitpick “top 1″)…and said…”he’s not going anywhere…too talented, too popular.” THIS was a rare moment indeed…but…”when it IS good…you FEEL it.” 🙂

Wow—I am in shock. I have been working all day, and watching the trajedy in Japan unfold, and was feeling like I needed a little “pick-me-up”. So, of course, I sat down to log onto my favorite web sight of all time, “The Voice”, and almost fell off my chair to see my poem staring at me along with those beautiful eyes! Angelica, I feel so honored that you shared it—-I’m shaking right now. And thank you to everyone who commented so positively. I wrote it right after David’s blog about splitting from Jive. I had so many mixed emotions—I just had to write down my feelings about David. He just inspires me so much–I can’t even explain it. Then, of course, I had to share what I wrote with SOMEONE—-everyone around where I live thinks I’m bonkers. So glad to have this sight to come to.

    Angelica—I love “Poetic Ponderings”—ha,ha—That’s perfect!

My heart goes out to all those affected with the events of the day. I am worried about the Japanese exchange student we hosted for a year and grew to love. I hope he is alright—haven’t heard from him yet.

    Bebe, Amb4dja…

I see no reason why David wouldn’t sing the songs from his tenure with the old label. Especially the ones he had a hand in writing. I don’t think the old label would prevent it. That would be foolish and I’m sure David came away from the “divorce from the old label with at the very least, joint custody of the music David created with pen and/or voice” metaphorically speaking. There is still much opportunity for TOSOD continue selling and even more so if & when David performs the songs live in concert, so IMO, the old label would want David to sing them whenever & wherever since they will still not have to promote TOSOD.

So when we finally see David touring again, I will expect to hear songs from his first album, TOSOD, some covers, and the new music he’s currently working on.

I refuse to even consider the possibility we won’t hear David sing songs like SOT, WFY, Crush, TOSOD, Good Place, MKOP, among others, in concert. It’s unthinkable.

    Good night!

Knowing how much David likes to do Charity events brings up a question. Can he still perform at charity events (or anywhere else) using the songs from his first two albums if Jive owns them? I mean, he wrote most of the ones on TOSOD, so wouldn’t that give him some rights to those?

I don’t know how that works. Does anyone have an answer on that?

The Japan earthquake and subsequent tsunami have saddened the whole world…..such a big loss of human lives. Thank you Bebe – I am very much touched by your concern for the people living in this part of the world. I live in Malaysia which is just outside the danger zone and everyone here is fine.

I have been watching CNN and BBC for news all this while and it is gratifying to know that your Government and the UN have pledged assistence for Japan and the countries affected. I am positive that there will be many other offers from other countries later on. At this point of time when a huge catastrophe like this strikes this beautiful world which we live in , it is immensely comforting to see the whole world coming together to help each other.
Thoughts of our beloved David come to mind…

I have been doing a great job lurking at this wonderful site full of warm and lovely people. 🙂 My 2 crazy Malaysian ODD friends, Amy and Shirley, who I met several months ago, have kept me very busy on a daily basis, through emails, texts, chats and “what-have-you” other resourceful sources – 99.9% of the time talking, speculating, sighing, laughing, crying, wishing, praying, gifting to both individuals and malls, re-arranging cd’s at music shops, planning future US trips sometime, and lately pondering ……about David. There are many other friends I met too from the local fanclub who are still very much David-affected. As far as I can see, they will never go away…….. 🙂

This site is growing from strength to higher strength……..articles of such beauty, of late from from Angelica, Blueskies, PaulaFOD, Djafan, MT…..and also from the lovely commentors…….you are a blessing and a source of inspiration to all the David Archuleta fans throughout the world. All we guys need now is a loadful of……..PATIENCE!! 😀

It’s heartbreaking to see the devastation caused by Japan’s horrible earthquake. Having just arrived in Hawaii for a meeting, thankfully there doesn’t appear to be any major impact from the tsunami where I am at but will keep in prayer all who are affected and for those who are aiding in the rescue. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul and through David’s beautiful eyes you truly can see a beautiful soul. Once, David turned that famous “Archugaze” on me when he was talking about something he deeply cared about. That gaze about took my breath away. I will never forget his eyes that day.
(He was talking about a young girl he had visited in the hospital. He heard that she died a couple of days later and was saying much it affected him and how it makes you think about what is really important in this life.)

    MT#30,
Regarding your question about the songs from TOSOD and David’s rights to them, I wish I had more knowledge in that area. But I think SilverFox is right; David will be able to sing them when he’s on tour. Many artists switch labels and I’m not sure how it happens but they continue to sing songs from all their old albums.

Oh my goodness, yet another talented poet emerges! Awesome poem DSTMA!

Was just reading on a local newspaper site and ran across an article about former NBA player Shawn Bradley’s involvement with Rising Star Outreach. All the way through the article I was thinking about how the author should also have written about our David (she is a sportscaster so that’s probably why her focus was on Shawn). At the very end I found this:

“Singing star David Archuleta is also involved with the organization. “It’s really taught me a lot,” he said, “I don’t want to leave because it’s really great to be around these kids and all these people.”

Archuleta and his fans have raised over $21,000 for dental and other projects that benefit the children of Rising Star Outreach.”

Silverfox #29 Right…I had confused what u said #21 about Jive not supporting a tour for TOSOD, (understood); I read it fast, as you saying a new company not wanting to promote the old songs owned by Jive, in a subsequent tour. I got it now!! And all everyone else said, about him having co-wrote etc, he does have rights to perform them. We don’t have to see a Jive promoted tour for this cd… David singing them, Live, in whatever his “new element” will be just fiiiine…and, of course, hopefully sell more of this deserving cd!

Bebe #36 😉 hehee. Yes. Sssh…let’s not make a big deal, he’ll run away again. Ha.
In all fairness,(to David) the bf always admitted to his talent, and thought he “SHOULD have won.” It just wasn’t his thing, though he supports from afar, (while relentlessly teasing.)
The perceived “bonkers David fan” I turned into can scare people away. I fear we well-intentioned die-hards may sometimes be a liability to David, scaring away the potential main-streamers from him.
Also, no matter David’s obvious talent to people like the bf, the “teen-idol” perception and anticipation of screaming tweens at the concerts is something some can’t get past.
BUT! …I’m thinking, now, post-Jive and David seen in a more appropriate musical light going fwd, new music…this can start to evolve.

I always just quietly sit by on nights like last night…because when I’m not “shoving David” down people’s ears…it allows the POD, Power of David to connect…I mean…c’mon at some point there’s just no denying. And the “connection” is a beauty to behold.

Last…we’d been discussing possibly going out to Stadium of Fire (we both like Brad Paisley too, not that THAT’S the point)….I was 1 click away from securing good seats last night, & we remember we have a wedding on 7/1!! Arrrgh. Dang!!! Not sure we can both work around that…but I actually don’t have to go to the wedding. Longshot now, but we’ll see. Any other lucky peeps going? I sure hope there’s some other live performances closer to East coast too soon, but SOF will be awesome.

Ok, sorrry…blah-blah-long post. Movin’ on with the day~have a good Saturday, all.

I truly understand and respect David’s need to step back a bit and regroup and refuel and take time to make important decisions. As a person and as an artist, I know that it will make him stronger and give him a renewed perspective. I only hope he doesn’t take too long…the world needs him so much right now. With all that is going on, not the least of which is the devastation in Japan, people need to feel that there is hope and goodness in the world…and we all know that no one does hope and goodness like David! (Not questioning his timetable, for we know he is wise beyond his years, just know what an amazing gift he has to heal and uplift people in times of trouble)

Thoughts and prayers to all those affected by yesterday’s events.

#39Bebereader, Andrea’s beautiful video led me to so many others to re-visit, that I’ve just been sitting here crying, laughing, and genuinely aching to hear David sing. Anything. In a v-log. In a closet. I don’t really care where. Just want to see and hear him sing! Then I feel guilty for being selfish. Only thinking of myself and my needs. When my whining is over, I wipe the tears and remember to trust in David.
Kaycee, Happy belated birthday to your daughter! Turning 18 is the beginning of so much opportunity! Here’s to an exciting and bright future filled with her reaching and attaining her dreams!
I don’t know if I have ever mentioned to you that I have a daughter named Kaycee. When we were choosing her name, I wanted her initials to be the same as mine. There were numerous ways to spell Kaycee, although I hadn’t seen it spelled like yours and eventually hers! If you tell me your middle name is Amber, then that will really be a coincidence! 😆

davidstopsmyaging, Sorry for the shock. I DID fire off a warning email to you the evening before it was published. I feel like Nanny McPhee saying that…”I DID knock.” haha. Just want to tell you that a mark of a good poem is that it gets better with each rereading. Each time I read yours I come away with a deeper understanding of the poem, your feelings, and David’s journey. I love the rhythm of it. I love the way you take your concern for him and weave it into a thing of hope and assurance.

    The world turns
    The soul yearns
    The eyes burn
    The man learns

Learns to sift life’s grains of sand
To make the rough parts smooth, and when
He learns his strengths, with steady hand,
He gently throws caution to the wind.
He knows the strength of songs, of words
He knows his music will be heard
He knows this as surely as he breathes.

As surely as I breathe, I know that too. Just has to be, like Amb4dja’s bf said, “he’s not going anywhere…too talented, too popular.”

You guys have been making some great comments about tour/songs now that he’s no longer with jive, which I LOVE to see. I like the squeeing which we are very good at here, but I also love when we can really discuss stuff in depth. After all, we were instructed to ponder. 😉

    Djafan,

Thanks for the heads up on that wonderful slideshow from India on Archuleta Fanscene. I think, as many have commented, that he was changed by what he experienced there and we will, as surely as he breathes, see it expressed in his music. I pilfered a lone screencap. I couldn’t resist.

Its the fans like you who make this site breathe the fresh air of originality. Thank you for allowing us to publish such a heartfelt poem. The picture in #48 says so much. Your poem captured in words that describe the look on his face.

Young eyes now choose, they spark and know
They watch the world while melodies grow
The songs, they swim, they fall and rise
Within the soul of these young eyes

To me it looks like the reality of where he is and why he had to come and help, became crystal clear in his mind. David does not judge others. These people are shunned because they are sick. When I look at that photo I can hear him saying “How can anyone leave the sick to fend for them selves?” David is watching as you said, and I know he is making a difference with his music.

I love a good in depth discussion. One topic that stays in my radar is illegal downloads. I get links daily in Google alerts to “steal” David’s music. Then I check the site where they are downloading for FREE the whole CD. I have to ask myself why I see 24,000 on one file sharing site? Do you think it’s non-fans? Do we need more gifting programs? It blows my mind that other young artists are subject to the same piracy but still seem to overcome it with sales. One word PROMOTION! Jive has not promoted David since late 2009. It’s almost as if they went through the motions on TOSOD to get it pressed, then abandoned the project. My wish for David in all this is that he has learned to not take people at their word, but by what they do. This Cd is a masterpiece.

I will leave that as food for thought to ponder.

Loved this confetti picture by Ron Gunnell. David deserves all the praise he gets.

I just want to give him a big grandma {{hug}} and tell him how well he’s done and that his act of service will never be forgotten. My heart hurts and yet it sings with what I feel from this photo.

But tell that to the struggling young musician who can’t get signed again because record sales are low because people would rather download his music for free.

Edit: After I typed this, I checked my email to find an offer to download for free a total of 69 mp3s of David’s or five of his albums.

I used to follow Cook on Google Alerts too but, like Abrra, I stopped because it was a waste of time. Google Alerts picks up any David Cook on the web and the right one rarely made news. But for the short time I followed him, I don’t recall seeing any free download sites offering his music. On the other hand, there is obviously a high demand for David’s music or there would not be so many illegal downloads.

From this, could we assume any or all of these?

    A) The offers only come when an artist has a new cd which Cook hasn’t had since 2009, thus no recent illegal offers?

    B) David’s music is more in demand than Cook’s and thus come the illegal downloads?

    C) People will pay for Cook’s music but will download David’s illegally?

Anyone want to venture a guess? It boggles the mind.

I had an idea that if David created his own subscription music site, he could encode the files so that they can be replicated only 3 times ( in case you lose one due to glitch in your pc). I don’t know if this is possible, but there has to be a way to keep the files from being copied through a file sharing site.

This song has it all – upbeat tempo, motivating, relatable lyrics and incredible vocals. Though the song didn’t do as well when first released, it’s never too late to bump it up and shock the synthetic incongruity-craving society. Prove that a good song with encouraging lyrics can make it way to the top, towering over the popular, incoherence that the music world has most recently become. I put the paragraph that mentioned David in to Google translate. I know its not 100% accurate, but one can see tone of the article in general. It is clear to me the writer does not like much about season 7. Too bad the writer didn’t say who they wanted to win. It’s clear they did not like either David.

“In recent years, AI seemed to wane. The most recent winners were a disappointment. In season 7 was David Cook, an insignificant boy who triumphed over the unbearable teenager David Archuleta. The judges were the fair Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul (always groggy and emotional), Simon Cowell (increasingly overreacted in their arrogance and evil) and Kara DioGuardi, a songwriter who played pretty hard, but good.”

    Silverfox

That’s quite a stretch, but plausible. Those who create the file sharing sites may be seeding it with free files of popular artists just to get hits. What I am more focused on is the actual download counts. I will not post any links to these sites. Here is info I copied from one of them.

Davidstopsmyaging, your poem is lovely. There are so many talented writers in this group, I think I should move to another fansite. Is there one for practical-minded fans who can’t write creatively at all? LOL!

This piracy problems truly disturbs me for the sake of young artists like David. We frequently have herds of young people in the house, and one week last fall I polled two different groups, ages 16 to 25. Out of 18 people, exactly one purchased his music, and that one is my son who said he knew I would “have a cow” if he downloaded it illegally. None of the others view downloading as stealing, and these are all good kids. None of them would think of taking anything that did not belong to them. Most of them don’t even have Itunes accounts, and if they do they use gift cards for movies or TV shows. Most of them said downloading songs didn’t matter because artists are rich anyway. None of them care about the poorer quality of the illegal downloads. And, here’s the funny part, my son said his friends all think he is rich because he buys his music. Have mercy.

I think the major labels aren’t interested in putting money into curbing piracy partly because they view their artists as disposable. A commenter at Snowangelz posted an interesting article a while ago which indicated that labels expected their pop artists to sell enough within 90 days to recoup expenses and make a profit. They are no longer interested in keeping an artist long term so he can develop a catalog of work.

Hope everyone has a good day!

Thanks for joining the discussion. I have read similar reports about young people not realizing the harm done by stealing music. The RIAA is one way to shake things up. I have no knowledge of their effectiveness. I think it has to start with the artist or the lable. Until someone puts real legal heat on these sites , they will continue. Just as one would protect their bank account, artists need to watch over their product.
Anyone can set up google Akers to have all mews about David come to thier mail box. If we all did this , we can report these sites. I left a comment on a few and One did reply and claimed they were in compliance with RIAA. So you see there is much denial on all sides over the legality of the existence of file sharing sites.

People make web sites and offer advertisers to put ads for products or services. The web site has to have significant hits count to show clients who pay them to put the ads up. An easy way to keep a site busy is to offer file sharing. Very little work for the volume of traffic they get.

Don’t you dare!! We love your comments here and practical is very welcome and needed everywhere. I found your polling of your son’s young friends very interesting. Nothing like going straight to the source for the facts.

Interesting reading the discussion on illegal downloads which has been a lot on my mind the last couple of days too. I’ll say more about that later…oh wait, David just tweeted.

This is my partial “Ode to Monday”…

Today is Monday, it is the beginning of a whole new week; A week of possibility, a week of new beginnings, a week that can be anything you want it to be!! There is a Gaelic proverb that states, Monday is the key day of the week full of promise…Someting a little upbeat for you from me.

    “Bebe, Djafan,

Call me a Conspiracy Theorist, but you are assuming the ones who post sites offering free downloads of David’s music are FANS who want everyone to have David’s music even if it’s for free? Ever think perhaps they are NOT fans at all? They KNOW what they are doing and they know it’s hurting David and they do not care? :(”

I’m sorry if I was unclear. I was not at all implying that David’s own fans were the ones posting offers for illegal downloads. I’m well aware that there are crooks out there who have ill intentions and plant illegal downloads for fun or seedy pleasure. I was merely wondering why it’s David’s music that people will illegally download and not that of other musicians. I know David isn’t the only victim of piracy but in this particular case, it directly contributed to low sales. I don’t care about other musicians, especially the ones who are established and don’t need high album sales to keep them in business. I only care about David and sales were low for TOSOD and shouldn’t have been. We saw how many copies were ‘stolen’ by whomever. Would love to add up the figures and show David!

David Archuleta Gets Hands-On During India Charity Trip

Photos taken from his recent trip to India in support of Rising Star Outreach documents the ‘Crush’ singer washing the foot of an old man and playing with a younger boy among others.

David Archuleta has traveled to India for a charity event in late January. Photos from the 20-year-old singer’s trip have recently hit the web, and they show him learning first hand what Rising Star Outreach’s mission is. Washing an old man’s foot and documenting an old lady’s blood pressure are only some of the things he did.

The season 7 runner-up of “American Idol” traveled to the Asian country to help Rising Star Outreach celebrate World Leprosy Day, which was on January 31. Of the charity trip, he said, “It’s really taught me a lot. I don’t want to leave because it’s really great to be around these kids and all these people.”

During the trip, David traveled to a leprosy colony. He assisted the doctors with their work and inaugurated the Pathway of Hope, a granite lined pathway created with motivational inscriptions from fans. He also performed for and with the patients. Some of the songs he sang were “Angels” and “Crush”.

David Archuleta took a recent trip to India in support of Rising Star Outreach, where he learned first hand what the organization does and stands for.

David is part of The Pathway to Hope project, where you can donate $50 to get your own brick on the pathway to raise money for schools, classroom supplies, and furniture in one of over 700 Leprosy colonies in Indian.

    SF, Bebe,

I don’t know who the thieves are. What I do know about conspiracies is that some things just don’t add up. We request and request to the radio stations and nothing, some actually say that can’t play it. There are people that go out of their way to post negative comments on David articles. For instance on itunes, they purposely give it a low vote and leave a comment that makes it obvious that they don’t like David, why do they bother? And it happens mostly where David gets good reviews and comments. I don’t think the fans are doing it like it was mentioned above most youngsters don’t think they’re doing anything wrong by illegal downloading in this case it directly affected the sales of TOSOD.

Something that has been on my mind for months now:

I seems to me that TOSOD has been one giant debacle from the very beginning. My time line on this might be off.

As I recall SBL was late being released as a single, which I think hurt it , because it was a great summer song. When it was released ( late summer) it received little or no promotion, except by David ( who worked his buns off) on radio stations, who then in turn never bothered to play it, and the video release wasn’t even coordinated with it .Then it seems in mid stream “Elevator” was the song to promote, which followed the same road as SBL.

Then it for some reason ( which I can’t remember) the album was delayed in being released for sale, which subsequently wasn’t promoted AT ALL. During this time somewhere SBL was offered on David’s site as a free download. ???? why? Money out the window. I wish I knew why all this discombobulation on one CD, didn’t one soul know what they were doing?

Then to top it all off–bad sales because of theft.

And this CD deserved so much better -it is full of nothing but good!

    Rant over!

    Bebe #84, 🙂

I know what you meant and it’s the reason why I think there is something very wrong going on as far as WHY David’s music is downloaded more than many other artists. And does it affect the overall sales of other artist’s who also have their music illegally downloaded as much as it has affected David? I would be very interested in actual statistics about this.

We all know the initial lower than expected sales of TOSOD was a direct result of poor promotion by the old label. There is no question TOSOD is a very good, if not GREAT album. Seemed to me David was left on his own to sink or swim with TOSOD. David seemed to be going with the flow, probably thinking “all things happen for a reason”. But maybe not because he severed his ties with the label. Firing his mgmt was an obvious next step because WEG has ties to the label through the other artists they manage, most if not all who are contracted with said label.

I’m not saying the old label or management “conspired” to hurt David which some people would say is “a stretch”, but hurt David they did anyway. 😦

One thing I do not and will never understand is why sales were so low the first week if David’s core fanbase bought it, some fans purchased multiple albums. I can’t believe he has less than 60K fans here in the US. At that time he had 500k followers, all or most were aware of the release of TOSOD. Even if only half are actual fans, that’s still a at least 200k fans who could have purchased it. What happened? I would really like to know.

Sorry if I’m bring up old news..but it still bothers me and the illegal downloading issue just brought it all back in my mind.

    Silverfox,

It’s not old news and if it’s still very much on your mind and my mind then I’m sure more fans are thinking about it too.

I remember that AOL had TOSOD livestreaming about two weeks before it turned up in the stores and on ITunes. A little while later, the illegal downloads appeared on youtube. I was livid and at the same time had a sinking feeling, knowing what it could mean for sales. There were complaints and the youtubes were taken down, only to be put up again a few days later. How many copies of TOSOD were stolen during that time? We’ll never know.

Which brings me to the belief that record labels should not put so much importance on the number of cds sold for $$ because it’s obviously no indication of how many cds are actually acquired.

I’ve been reading comments and I too am so disappointed in how everything went for TOSOD. So many things didn’t go the way they should have.

One thing though … I don’t know why and artist’s whole CD is put up before it goes to iTunes? I guess it’s to build anticipation, I can see that. But the WHOLE thing? It doesn’t make sense. Knowing how much of a problem illegal downloading is, why don’t they do 40sec snips instead?

I remember when the first album came out. It was on AOL but it had “Music On Demand” right smack in the middle of the songs. That was perfect. Why didn’t they do that with TOSOD? No one would bother stealing something that wasn’t a full original.

Anyway, that’s one of my pet peaves on the release of his last album. I think the initial copies that started the illegal downloads came from that full preview that was put up. If it hadn’t been for that, maybe the pre-orders and initial sales would have been higher?

Let’s hope they fix that issue on his next release. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

And I can’t believe that Google Alerts e-mails people with illegal download sites!! People don’t even have to try to find it. It’s just sent out! That’s crazy!

Just taking a minute to say I love this. I am doing well since my knee replacement. Still using the walker and having a hard time siting at the computer for long. I get to go off the comadin tomorrow and start 4 baby asprins a day for 3 weeks. 2 weeks down and 5 to go before the left knee replacement…Lovin listening to my David James Arhuleta music and giving out CD’s to whomever…My 2 cute Physical theripists liked it when I gave them each a CD and told them to change their motto to just one step in front of the other. LOL!
I have missed all the beautiful articles and will try and catch up later.

    MT,

I totally agree with you about it being a bad idea to stream new releases online. But that seems to be the way things are going now. It might build anticipation as you say but it also gives you a chance to listen to the cd and decide whether or not you want to buy it.

For diehard fans like us, of course we’re going to buy several copies but for casual fans, perhaps they feel they have their fill after hearing it repeatedly for a week for free. Or maybe they intend to buy it eventually, some day.

Statistics say that that young people from 13-23 dominate the music industry. That’s also the group that grew up on limewire. Ever hear of a college kid who isn’t broke?

Just listening to David sing on Unplugged…

The world has been a less better place not hearing him sing for so long…

But that is all going to change and the songs on TOSOD will be back on stage.

He has more great songs on one CD than anyone out there…
