David Archuleta ~ the Man, the Music, the Mission

Sundance Film Festival ~ January 2009

The Man (Or: DA ((aka: Christopher Robin)) visits my Hundred Acre Woods.)

Truthfully? My natural thought processes tend to be more like Eeyore than Winnie the Pooh. I have also been known to share a weekly cup of anxiety with Piglet. (Just sayin’: There are probably going to be thorns on that there rose. But, no stomping please. Good roses are hard to find!) Some people tell me that the words pragmatic and paranoid are just a little too close in my dictionary.  *sigh*

So when DA began his career following Idol with the outlook: “I could get hit by a car…”, part of me nodded in melancholy approval of his “seize the day” attitude. And I totally understood his occasional forays into: “If this doesn’t work out I might…” From my viewpoint this was no ‘starry-eyed puppy’. Although he may have been inexperienced, he was still a man who had done his homework and knew something about the odds.

So my own Pooh Bear (in search of ever more DA music), has always been accompanied by a very faithful Eeyore (ready to predict the inevitable lack). However DA, (with his inimitable way of upsetting my “Is it half full, or half empty?” apple cart), has come to the rescue once again, and like Christopher Robin who cures all ills, he has set right the affairs in my Hundred Acre Woods. He has answered the question of the ages: “Will there be enough music from you, DA?” He has penned ‘Happily Ever After’ into my story.

How? By answering the simple question: “Who would you like to sing with this year?” And DA, (who seems to always speak while offering a restful, mental branch on which any migrant thought may land) said: Tony Bennett.  “I think it would be so cool! He’s just… he’s been doing it for so long and he still sounds amazing.” (DA, you just kinda make my heart go pitter-patter when you say things like that.)

Thereupon my inner “Eeyore” sat down in shocked wonder and blissfully forgot that he had ever lost his tail. You could say, he “closed his eyes and saw the view”.

The Music (Or: Is there a ((classical)) genre that does NOT wait anxiously for DA to rebirth it?)

Cannons! Fireworks! Stadiums of cheers! Cue the 1812 Overture and Beethoven’s’ Ode to Joy! While DA can often confuse, entertain and delight us with seeming non-sequiturs, he is never random when it comes to music. (Exhibit “A”: Eva Cassidy.) So I knew he was perfectly serious. And. I. Rejoiced.

Tony Bennett. (Bless his unsuspecting heart!) This genre of music has not been on the top of my listening choices. But I do appreciate it. And I love what Michael Buble has done and is doing to bring that genius forward to a new audience.

My lack however, did not stop me from recognizing DAs’ own brilliance, appreciation, embodiment, and slam-dunk delivery of said genre whenever he got the chance.

So you can get the idea, here is Tony Bennett (generation jumping) with Michael Buble in 2010.

I can totally see how DA would look on stage with either of these lovely people. (Or both?! Yes, please?) And I would start saving my money….. now.

The Mission (Or: Even though the offer may self-destruct in 10 seconds, I believe DA has accepted his own Mission Impossible and will succeed.)

The historical perspective: Tony Bennetts’ first number one hit was in 1951. He was 25 years old. After several hits his run came to an end in the mid 60s and he seemed to disappear. He had a 15 year span when he was off the musical radar. In the 90s he came back stronger than ever, again putting out gold records. He has kept his musical style intact and “remains a popular and critically praised recording artist and concert performer.” Two things are credited with his comeback success:  1) a good manager (his brother) and 2) being true to his own music.

The New York Times said, “Tony Bennett has not just bridged the generation gap, he has demolished it. He has solidly connected with a younger crowd weaned on rock. And there have been no compromises.” At age 68 he had made it all the way back. He was 84 this last August and is still giving performances and concerts. (Added note: He was taught the “Bel canto” singing discipline, which was said to “keep his voice in good shape for his entire career.”)

Mr. Bennett also knows he has unique fans, especially the ones in the UK. He says how they “really take you in and treat you like family” (Sound like any fans you know?)

DA is a planner, a worker, a dreamer, an avid learner and constantly searches the heavens (both within and without) for guidance. He makes goals. He has vision. He has experience with challenges and how they can ultimately work in surprising ways for ones benefit. He also recognizes and appreciates these attributes when he finds them in others.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE that he said he would like to sing with Tony Bennett. This year. Ahem. (Please take notice, Mr. Bennett!) I ABSOLUTELY LOVE that he dreams of singing until he is 84. Think of all the songs!!!! It. blows. my. mind. (Cause, (( love ya Mr. B.)) DA has more than one genre he can sing – actually.) (And, actually, he already copped the whole “demolishing generation gaps” thing when he was 17: “Shop Around”, “Imagine”, Christmas tour, anyone?)

DA, I love how you think and I trust you. Thank you so much for just being who you are. And for wanting to sing with Tony Bennett.

“You find it! You know it! Don’t make it wait! These are words I wanna say every hour of every day.” Wherever he is, DA makes it a “good place”. And my heart is comforted. My Hundred Acre Woods is lit with the eternal sunlight of contentment. And me? *sigh* I have been given the map to the honey tree.

“Silly old bear”.

Bluesky, you take us to the moon and back with your sublime and inspiring writing!

I’m so very proud of David for choosing Tony Bennett when asked with whom he’d like to sing this year. David is a musical genius so his choice should not have surprised me but to my knowledge he’s never mentioned TB in public before so for me it came out of left field!

Although I’ve never been fan of Tony Bennett’s music, I recognize his huge talent and contribution to the genre of jazz music and to the world of entertainment in general.

David Archuleta, another huge talent…it’s a win-win situation!

When I saw David singing at the Sundance Festival with a poster of Tony Bennett behind him I immediately thought of the similarities and how I would wish David that kind of career (without the 15 year intermission).

Bluesky, you have an absolutely charming way of wording things. I just love the way this story was woven.

As for TB, I really don’t know much about him except that he is a big name in the industry. I have high hopes for David and I think he will also achieve that status some day. I believe his extraordinary talent will get him there.

Ha! “Fly me to the moon” reference, 4theworld! (You sneaky pun-person, you!) And for me? Well, Mr. B. was never really a favorite either. (Though it is really easy to get used to Buble! *sigh*)

What was so wonderful to me was that DA (see “DA” in BOLD letters here) HAD heard of him, was familiar with him (needless to say, the whole genre) and WANTED to sing with him. Our lefty kinda lives in ‘left field’.

Take us there with you, DA. Maybe that’s where the moon is after all. ^_^

Bluesky you’ve intrigued my Eeyore! I, too,was not a real fan of the TB type of music in the past (although I could appreciate his talent and really smooth voice), but since Buble I’ve learned to appreciate the music more, as well (don’t ask me why–there is no answer). I would L.O.V.E to hear David and Mr. Bennett duet together. It gives me warm chills to just think of it.

Don’t you just love how David has created in us the desire to look at the glass as half full since we’ve come to know him. I wonder why it took me so many years to realize this is a good way of life?

” My Hundred Acre Woods is lit with the eternal sunlight of contentment. And me? *sigh* I have been given the map to the honey tree.” Amen to this. 🙂

Blueberry, I have to say thanks! You are expanding my musical horizons. I did check out Tony Bennett as well as Michael Buble (kinda embarassed to admit I had no idea what MB sang, but I did recognize one or two.) Some good stuff by both. 🙂

And I actually imagined David doing a new arrangement to Fly Me To The Moon, it sounded really pretty in my head. haha

Dear David at least you are keeping your New Year’s resolution, but where did the 4 minute limit come from?

And so I came to see him, to listen for a while

Really enjoyed your article Bluesky. Always write, k?

What I really enjoyed about David’s vlog was that he seemed excited to watch Idol again. Good to see him geeking about something, enjoying the show, the talent (there is more than usual), and just sitting down to enjoy time with his family – something he hasn’t had much time to do. I bet he sings along. I bet he knows every word of every song. I bet he knows all of their names.
American Idol should realize how d&@$ lucky they are to have him watching. He is the best advertisement for that show ever.

    Poof,

I agree with you 100%. I may be in the minority here but I love Tony Bennett and Michael Buble is no Tony Bennett. He is derivative and pale in comparison to those he emulates, i.e., Sinatra, Bennett, Damone, etc. David is an artist with his own personal style and if he takes own a song, he makes it his own.

    Bluesky,

I love the whimsical turn you bring to your thoughts when you write. You take Winnie the Poo and Eeyore and the Hundred Acre Woods and spin it into real world knowledge of what it takes to have staying power in a very competitive business. I think it’s very revealing that the secret to Tony Bennett’s career longevity is good management and staying true to himself. I love the Park City performance where Tony Bennetts portrait was in the background, like a good omen or foreshadowing of things to come. Not that David will copy him or be another Tony Bennett, but that he is a true original with a voice that is destined for greatness. This I believe. I have pondered on it.Thinking emoticon Pictures, Images and Photos And now I have written it down.

I was telling my friend that DA is like this quantum machine that takes all the input from the past, allows it to churn inside him until it jells, then facilitates the birth of something so beautiful it can surprise even him in its final metamorphosis. But that is because for him, music is the means to a message and not the message itself.

The magic of DA is what he sees in others that I do not see. What he hears in music that I do not hear. And then, when he tells it to me, somehow I find deep down, that I knew it all along. And it is precious to me.

I love hearing all your different thoughts. And that we can all enjoy this journey.

Thank you for pointing out something positive about how David puts his mark on music.I needed that so much. I will admit that his vblog was disappointing to me. I expected something about writing or a mention of the Stadium of Fire concert. In the past, there was usually some news relating to his career. He has made a resolution to make a blog every week. Perhaps that is too often and he just spoke of what was top most on his mind. I am patient about when he gets back on stage. He should take all the time he needs to get his professional life on track. Hearing about what he did recently to further that goal is far more interesting to this fan.

Oh, my dear friend Abrra! I was asked months ago about an old fable-story that tells of a man who hires on to work at a farm. He tells the farmer that he is a good hire because he “can sleep when the wind blows”. It seems that he is so good at what he does a storm cannot awaken him. All is safely taken care of, horses, cows, sheep, hay.

Oh, I feel SUPREMELY that DA is only sitting with his family and enjoying Idol so much because his “music” and its delivery to us IS being taken care of. Tenderly and Mindfully.

I truly believe that. Why else could I write what I did above? Why else could I sit and enjoy Idol as I have not ever. Especially since I have never watched it before DA and never since until now. The difference? My life is not on the line each week. I just enjoy. I feel DA is enjoying it the same way. He could not be if his Music were not being taken care of.

(But if you need to vent … I will email you my ##. Piglet and I are on for tea anytime!!)

    Tony Bennett, Tony Bennett…Got it!
I just remembered that my daughter’s friend graduated from a high school in NYC called “Frank Sinatra School of the Arts” founded by Tony Bennett!

I did a little research and found a letter he wrote to parents:

“….I would like students to know at the onset that fame and celebrity are not the true goals of the arts. The true artist is at the service of a rigorous arts and academic program…and his craft.

Through the years…it was always Frank Sinatra’s desire to help children receive a quality education involving the arts. I can think of no better way to remember, celebrate and honor my best friend and colleague, the great performer and entertainer, Frank Sinatra, than to create a wonderful, vibrant school in his name.”

    Sincerely,
    Tony Bennett

Recognizing new young talent is apparently of interest to Tony Bennett. I just know that he would love to do a duet with David Archuleta.

As for David’s vlog and new music and touring, I’m quoting him from MKOP:

“Give it time and it will fall in line…”

I am new to this blog but am thoroughly enjoying the interchange here. 🙂 I agree with the immortal words of Poo and David too, “Think, think, think!” I appreciate that DA is always willing to share not only such sound advice, but also the sweet fruits (honey if you will) of his own “practice what I preach” creative process! Personally my favorite “honey” is the crystallized kind that takes its own sweet time to materialize! 🙂 I have no doubt that this momentary “pause” in David’s life is serving not only a “tender and mindful” purpose but a beautifully, refining one as well. After all as this “Tigger” knows only too well, not only is the “Proof in the pudding!” but after bouncing around, as we Tiggers are want to do, there is nothing better than sitting down for a sweet helping of “creamy” honey and an enchanting interchange with our dear friend Poo!

And to MY dear friend Bluesky….. (I could read a BOOK of your insightful thoughts!;)

“The magic of DA is what he sees in others that I do not see. What he hears in music that I do not hear. And then, when he tells it to me, somehow I find deep down, that I knew it all along. And it is precious to me.”

What a beautiful and honoring picture you have painted for us all with your words! I believe that it is abundantly evident that those of us privileged to enjoy a few reflective moments visiting your “Hundred Acre Woods” are simultaneously filled and mesmerized by your perception of the sweet mystery that intrigues and touches all of us who anxiously await our David’s thoughtful decent from the “Honey Tree!”

    Thank you!

Bluesky … Your words are so wonderfully and creatively written … Some time ago, I bought Tony Bennet’s CD called “Duet: An American Classic” after seeing a PBS special about its making, not because I was a fan of his music but I was intrigued to hear him seamlessly and agelessly singing with different famous artists who each had their own unique vocal styling. Somehow it reminded me of how gifted David is, as he could sing anything or with anyone for that matter. As young as David is, I can’t imagine what is yet to come, all the songs still being written, to be sung, to be recorded and perhaps, some in collaboration with other respected artists. I share what you said so eloquently “My Hundred Acre Woods is lit with the eternal sunlight of contentment”. As painful as it may be waiting for more news, I take solace in that contentment knowing that he will continue to sing. How sweet it’ll be when he will give us a detailed map to that honey tree!

Angelica #15 … that photo made my day. Gotta love David for thinking about us fans to vblog but he shouldn’t be surprised at what we’re gonna be pondering about because it’ll be no different than what we’ve already been pondering about (if that makes any sense).

And I have indeed been pondering also. After watching that vlog, all I want is to be able to call David up and say, “love seeing your face, but when are you going to give us some real news?” (I guess my frustration is showing.:( ) It reminded me of a little poem I wrote, just playing around, the day before he posted that vlog.

    Dear David …

    David, dear David,
    What can I say?
    It’s been so long
    That you’ve been away

    We wait and we wait
    For news of a tour
    It’s harder for us now
    Than ever before

    We hear just a rumor
    Or one little tweet
    And cartwheels are rolling
    We’re all on our feet!

    We look for a clue
    We hope and we pray
    On pins and on needles
    We sit and we wait

    David, sweet David
    Why, oh why
Is our plea to your ear
    Always denied?

    Just one little tidbit
    Is all that we ask
    You’re always so generous,
    At least in the past

    But now you are quiet
    And we’re all confused
    Please, dear sweet David
    Give us some news!

MT, another great poem that reveals the frustration many of us are feeling.

I know the cat in #15 I posted after watching the vlog is amusing but she is not amused. I don’t know what’s going on and though I don’t need to be privy to everything in his life or head, (nor do I want to) I find the vlog deeply frustrating. Maybe he has nothing to say yet. Then say that and at least give a passing nod to our concerns he must know we have right now. I understand things take time but what happened to “communication is key”? He has toured extensively to screaming, adoring fans here and abroad, yet is talking about feeling like he’s eleven years old again and learning so much from this year’s contestants on AI? I read a definition of love once as being “anxiously concerned for the welfare of another.”
I am anxiously concerned for him right now and I make no apologies for loving him enough to say that.

Angelica, I understand completely how you (and your cat) feel. I think the reason the cat was soooo funny is because it so BOLDLY stated what we all felt after the vlog.

It’s always nice to see his face, and we love that he’s thinking of his fans and wants to make contact, but pleaseeee … we need something more than comments about AI.

I’d be happy if he just mentioned working on music, or hummed a few syllables for us and said, “I just thought I’d give you a little taste of the music in my head. What do you think?” or “I’ve been so busy, sorting things out and trying to make arrangements so that I can perform and see you guys, again.” or “Don’t worry guys, you’ll see me before July.” Something … to know he is moving forward and not sitting in limbo.

Am I a greedy fan? Maybe. Am I ashamed of it? NO! I just want to be kept in the loop, just a little. Or as you said Angelica, just acknowledge that he understands that we need some sort of news because we care.

I don’t know what he could tell us. Like you, I’m just concerned, and just the tiniest bit of reassurance from him would go a long way.

Been sitting here reading all the new comments and rereading yesterdays.A rereading Bluesky’s beautifully written article once again.
I also love your comments…like #38….”I was telling my friend that DA is like this quantum machine that takes all the input from the past, allows it to churn inside him until it jells, then facilitates the birth of something so beautiful it can surprise even him in its final metamorphosis. But that is because for him, music is the means to a message and not the message itself.”
    ♥♥♥♥♥ooooh! I love that so much!♥♥♥♥

I was reading comments on another fan site earlier, and someone mentioned the blog at The Voice and all the “haters” comments.(if this person is here reading, may I ask, why would you say something like that?)
This special place is so full of nothing but love for David. The administration here, and all who write such wonderful articles, and those who comment, you continually blow me away with your insight, dedication, and deep heartfelt love for our David. You all make me cry, make me laugh,(sometimes both at the same time)make me think and rethink.I feel so blessed to have found this special place♥ You are all truly some of the most beautiful people I have ever encountered.

so true MonkFod. Now David is taking care of David.

Seacrest is doing a charity thing called The Voice.zerogravity on twitter was collecting David books cd’s and tee shirts to make up gift baskets for The Voice to give away. I don’t have all the particulars, but I read about it on FOD a few days ago.

    From FOD

Thank you so much for all of your exposure to helping me make these baskets for The Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and The Ryan Seacrest Foundation The Voice Media Center! It has been so much fun pulling the first basket together for the kids at the hospital and I know they will be so excited!! As I was pulling it together though I thought to myself,,, well, I’m sure there are kids at the hospital that are too young for the CD’s, books and T’Shirts just yet and I wanted to try to include all of the kids in this project so I decided to make the baskets “David’s Favorite Things”. Think “Oprah’s Favorite Things” but David style!!! I added some Dr. Suess, Finding Nemo, Glee and some art supplies (remember the challenge of drawing a picture?). I will continue to try and incorporate items for all ages to enjoy!! Thank you again to everyone!! I will continue to send pictures as new items arrive and new baskets are built and delivered. Please e-mail me at kcarlson27@hotmail.com if you have any items you’d like me to add to a basket… either tour things or “David’s Favorite Things”.

David’s vlog is making the rounds in the media. Here is a nice write up from Examiner.com

Former American Idol runner up, David Archuleta, now 20 years old, was only 16 years old when he became one of the youngest contestants on the 7th season of the show. Archuleta received 44 percent of over 97 million votes, making the extremely talented David Cook the winner. However, Archuleta didn’t lose. In fact, he most definitely came out a winner, with a huge fan base and great career ahead of him. It was in 2007 when America first met Archuletta and heard his story.

How did it all begin for Archuleta? He started singing at the age of 6, inspired by a Les Miserables video. He stated, “That musical is what started all of this.”

In 2003, David Archuleta overcame great odds when one of his vocal cords was paralyzed while he competed on CBS’s Star Search. Doctors called it vocal paralysis, but Archuleta overcame the problem and not only won the show, but also $100,000. Vocal paralysis is usually caused by a virus. His coach at the time, Dean Kaelin stated,

“Normally, both vocal cords come together tightly and neatly when you speak. But David’s paralyzed cord was just sitting there doing nothing while his good vocal cord had to come all the way over so that they could join. This overstressed his voice, causing swelling and pressure in his cords.”

Archuleta was immediately started on a rehabilitation program based on a set of vocal scales and breathing exercises. We all know how it turned out, as David Archuleta continued to win over his fans from the Idol stage week after week.

David Archuleta has since released Crush in 2008, the first single from his self-titled debut album which was released 2 months later. It debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling over 750,000 copies in the U.S. and over 900,000 worldwide. In October 2010, he released his second album called The Other Side of Down. He continued releasing songs and performing all around the world. Currently, Archuleta has left his management team and plans to spend time working on writing original material.

In March 7, 2011 David Archuleta posted a new video blog where he talks about the new season of American Idol including the talent and the songs that they chose to sing so far. Click on the sidebar video to view!

Dr. dakgal here. Since I have a free hour, I would like to delve into my closet pondering a little deeper.

Plopping himself down in a bare room, then showing us a gorilla- might (in a very David way) be his way of telling us that he is very aware that there is a gorilla in the room —his fans–wanting to know–when are you going to do it-how are you going to do it –who you going to do it with–when will there be a tour, etc. etc. But, he isn’t ready to talk about anything as of yet.

A lot easier than demonstrating to us that we have ” ants in our pants”

I posted this on another site, but am bringing over here, cause it’s the way I feel.

I totally agree with the down time–how many of us that would find ourselves in a career move i.e.– changing companies or jobs would rush into such important life changing decisions. We would take our time and evaluate everything before we made our move. Why jump from the frying pan into the fire. So David you ponder all you want–ask questions-seek advice-listen to your gut, and knowing David pray.

He is also very aware of the time line and the need to not drag it out for a very long time.

See what happens when you turn me loose to ponder!

    Still the best performance ever.

Idol Chatter ~ American Idol’s most memorable moments by Mark Franklin

American Idol sent more than 300 contestants to Hollywood this year.

And the show asked each and every one to name his or her most memorable Idol moment.

Some skirted the question. Many said getting their own golden ticket.

But many others pinpointed a specific Idol performance from the past.

Having listened to all 300, I’m posting the performances most often mentioned.

I’ll be adding them gradually, as the opening night of this year’s finals approaches.

The last two I’ll post were mentioned most often. The others will appear in no particular order.3. David Archuleta decided to sing John Lennon’s “Imagine” in the Idol semifinals back in season seven.

The vocal that followed immediately established the then-teen as a frontrunner that year and is among the best ever on the show.

I just credit David from not fleeing the stage after hearing the rather bizarre feedback from Paula Abdul.

I guess he took it as the compliment it was meant to be.

Thanks for that video, dja. I never get tired of it!

David is getting lots of buzz lately with respect to American Idol. Here are two more mentions:

    1) From The Republic, Columbus, Indiana

“Season 10 of “American Idol” kicks into high gear Wednesday night (at 8 on Fox) as the 13 finalists compete for the first time. Here’s an assessment, from worst to first:

    —Stefano Langone

Could win the whole thing — or be gone by Friday. Surest pop sound, vocally reminiscent of David Archuleta. Oversang Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are,” but he’s still here.”

    2) From Syracuse.com

“As I mentally “wrote” this piece, it occurred to me that, while the faces change from season to season, the composition of the Top 10/12/13 always includes a set cast of character types. Here’s my take on each of the Top 13 and what, if any, role they fit.

    Who’s missing?

It’s important to note the categories we don’t have in this year’s Top 13. No darling teenage boys (Kevin Kovais, David Archuleta, Aaron Kelly) made the cut although there were certainly plenty in the running. There are no rocker chicks (Allison Iraheta, Siobahn Magnus, Gina Glocksen, Amanda Overmyer) or Lady Gospelettes (Mandisa, LaKisha, Melinda Doolittle).”

There always comparisons but nobody comes close, IMO.

Just wanted him to tell us not to worry because he knows we worry. Instead, he told us to ponder, which is to meditate which can also be to pray. Does he want us to pray for him? In the less than 4 minutes he spoke to us in a well-lighted closet cause he doesn’t want to keep us in the dark, but..he talked about the song Stephano sang saying it was his “all-time favorite song” It’s late. David Archuleta – Positive Music Amidst the Popularity

What are songs about these days? Lighting it up like it’s dynamite, taking rides on disco sticks, and love being a drug. Not exactly as family friendly as music used to be. Though David Archuleta’s music is an
exception. From the songs he sang on American Idol, to the songs on his newest album, every song David has sung has been either inspirational or an innocent love song.

David has influenced music simply by singing about what he believes in. He believes in helping people with his music, not entertaining them and giving them what they want to hear. Motivational melodies and moving ballads, unlike most of today’s popular music. David would much rather sing about parachutes and airplanes rather than grenades. He’d rather sing a song about his perfect girl rather than California girls. He’d rather sing about things getting better rather than loving the way you lie. He’d rather sing about getting to the other side of down rather than spinning right round when she goes down.

I always “ponder” for him….:) David is always in my prayers… The music industry is tough and he has been doing a magnificent job! Great things to come from this young man! Thanks for your thoughts!

Loved your article–as Pooh, Tigger and Eeyore are some of my favorite characters.

I also loved David’s vlog. He is so wise. I think he knows how anxious we are and asks us to sit quietly and ponder, even meditate. To do that in a real way is to let go of our anxieties, doubts, negative thoughts and open up our hearts and souls to possibilities. He says I think it will help you guys out! In other words, I think he is speaking directly to our anxious freakouts, saying calm down, things are gonna get better.

I also think his sense of humor was evident in the vlog. When it started, I was almost inside the vlog, concentrating so hard, waiting for the word, any word. Almost the first thing he says is he is going to get down to business and I hold my breath and lean closer in. Blah, Blah, Blah (Come on David, hurry, tell us the news, the plans) and then he says something about interesting and sticks the random gorilla in my face.

I burst out laughing, leaned back and giggled while I listened for the rest of the vlog. Priceless David!!! Talk about breaking the tension, lightening things up! So David! We need to relax and let him do what he needs to do till he figures things out and then tells us about it. I so love him.

And I so love all the talented writers, commentors and lurkers on this fansite.

And thanks so much for posting all the words to that song. I had never heard it before. (Is there a song or a singer or a writer DA does NOT know?) It is poignant, heart rending, soul wringing and renewing-ly beautiful. For DA to say this is his favorite song and that he sings it in his room (like “Stand By Me”…) … what the four walls of that room know! We may never know, cause each of us is alone when we “sing” in that way.

Our support does reach him, though. I know that. Maybe not as piercingly as his does to our hearts when he sings, but more as responding confirmation that his ‘voice’ is heard: both the echos and waves of ‘yes’ that wash over him in concert, and the more quiet tide that pulls us again and again, answering (like the moon) to both what we can and cannot see of the light he reflects.

(sorry, didn’t mean for that to …. oh that thing that happens when I try to describe something. *sigh* Anything in the above that does not make sense, just *whish*. Love you guys. *_*)

I ran SO hard to get home, didn’t know where to hide, then I heard him! I jumped into a laundry basket full of clothes behind a sliding closet door, frantically pulling the clothes over me till I was covered and the slid the door gently across the runner till it was closed. My dream always ended with the sliding door opening, and I would wake up with a cry, and my little heart pounding in my chest!

She is well on her way to a full remission! Woohoo! Happy dance and hugs all around! The doctor said that it’s nothing short of a miracle. Thanks to all for your kind comments and prayers on her behalf.

Another fun thing happened to her this week–last October, before she got sick, she had her first paid modeling job…and the first photos have just come out. I saw American Idol last night, except for Pia Tuscan, Paul Macdonald and perhaps, Scotty, I was disappointed. I expected much more of Stefano, Thia, but the voices were not what I expected or what they promised.
Stefano had passion, but did not see talent, Pia had passion and talent, but not transfer the screen as did David and Paul, has a good voice, good attitude on stage like Jason Castro. But none of these three people sang to me, as did David.
I saw only good singers on stage in a U.S. program.
There is talent, there is also passion, and also has attitude, but the big difference, I feel, I see no commitment to every word, every sentence, I do not see david.
I’ve always compared to david with a beautiful landscape full of trees, lakes and sun.
Last night, I got bored, I hope the landscape will change, but Da Vinci painted only once to La Gioconda.

With David watching A1 this year, we can all see the complete differences that people can make to your life in the industry. What a complete changeover for A1…

David was rather tormented by Simon sometimes because of his choices of songs but as we see there are several songs that include religion and several singers who are wearing crosses. The setting and the people are so much more healthy to the psyche than when David was a contestant.

    Life can be good there…

I’m glad you brought up idol. I watched last night too, hoping to be wowed but like you and Bebe, came away bored and unmoved. Then I got on YouTube and typed in David Archuleta, Grand Rapids 2009 and watched all of emilyluvsarchie’s videos. Holy hijoles!!!! Now THAT’S how you bring it! I did not see anyone on that idol stage perform with that much passion and power! His voice is intoxicating, he is a sensual, charismatic, something. in. the. way. he. moves. STAR!!! Gaaaah!!!! No one does what he does on a stage with a song and an audience in the palm of his hand. Certainly no one on that idol stage last night though there was no lack of talent displayed. You are right, Gladys. Da Vinci painted only one La Gioconda and there is on one David James Archuleta.

Re pondering: I am with you Skydancer, pondering DA can blissfully take up a lot of time. And Idol: I too, watched last night. I love some of the singers and performers (not always the same peeps) and I can see success for several. Hope they do well. But… as Gladys and others are saying, it is not the same.

DAs voice pierces the layers of dust we do not even know we have and shines the light on our own flickering candles. It is the different “vibration” or essence Angelica has spoken of. Maybe, (okay I am going to get weird here) with one vocal chord not exactly perfect, something in us responds to the siren call for wholeness and vibrates in answer. This can only happen because he is so in tune.

Regarding AI, I watched last night too. I may be hooked on reality shows but not hooked on any of this year’s contestants. By this time in Season 7, David had already won my heart and watching each week was a must! The magnetic pull through the tv screen was already there. I don’t feel that pull this time. I was happy when one of the contestants sang “Maybe I’m Amazed” because I’ve always liked that song but the OTT vocal gymnastics a la Glambert weren’t necessary, IMO. Still waiting for David’s complete version of the song.

FG Yeah, could be! I have heard that violins will do that. That the strings of one violin will vibrate when the strings of another are plucked, if they are in tune. DA has said that it does not happen without us, that he loves the ‘spirit’ or ‘energy’ in the room when he sings and the audience responds. I think he loves it because he is so loving and what he sends outwards gets reflected back. There is his wonderful quality of voice for sure, but it is the whole package that makes it so unique. I know this: it is a mystery. I am just glad to be one of those here and now to be sung to.

So… who else would like to be a fly-on-the-wall while he simmers in his creative juices?

I miss this place! I’ve been very busy at work and it’s only going to get worse…not complaining though with so many people loosing their jobs.

Kaycee! What wonderful news! Those are great pictures and your daughter is gorgeous.

I also actually sat down and watched AI, nothing, nada, zero. The comments below say it all.

    Gladys, beautiful.

“But none of these three people sang to me, as did David.” “I do not see david.” “Da Vinci painted only once to La Gioconda”

    Bluesky, not weird at all.

Maybe, (okay I am going to get weird here) with one vocal chord not exactly perfect, something in us responds to the siren call for wholeness and vibrates in answer. This can only happen because he is so in tune.

    Angelica, love this.

His voice is intoxicating, he is a sensual, charismatic, something. in. the. way. he. moves. STAR!!! Gaaaah!!!! No one does what he does on a stage with a song and an audience in the palm of his hand.

I think God only made one of him.

What did all of you have for breakfast this morning? FRUIT LOOPS? You are all hilarious–See David is right –all that pondering has lightened everyone up a ton.

Kaycee–great news for your lovely daughter and you–hope it won’t be long before she is 100% all better. Now we have to get Emi better.

DJA– “I also actually sat down and watched AI, nothing, nada, zero. The comments below say it all.”

My first time watching and I’m with you –if the singer doesn’t reach out and sucked me in like David did in the first minute– then I fast forward to the next one.–he has such an aura and charisma. And can that man saaang.

The only one half way entertaining is Casey ( if he’d shave off half the beard and get a better “do”. He will never get the teen vote tho.

To me the rest are all to generic-a hundred out there like them. Not like our ” one of a kind”.

Gladys–Thanks for my knowledge for the day–I had to Google
La Gioconda to find out what you were talking about. And I’ve even seen the real thing at the Louvre. Your words are so true!

Looking back to 2008, it wasn’t just his voice, although his voice alone would have won us over.

    It was all the accoutrements…

his warmth, his smile, his quiet humility, his character, the way he looked at someone squarely in the eyes, how he treated everyone with respect, his steel will which came through despite his age, his strong character and beliefs despite what anyone else thought. He was a mystery back then, too. And then he sang to us…

    …and we’ve been changed forever.

Kaycee – So happy for your good news. I will continue sending prayers. Your daughter is absolutely beautiful.

I think that David is the one updating his official Facebook page. As of 20 minutes ago, it was updated with a video from our President on bullying. I have been wondering who has been updating his page. My gut is telling me it’s David. (After this) It is highlighting an important issue. It doesn’t speak of singing or anything to do with him. And that is so him.

So glad to hear the great news from Kaycee about her gorgeous daughter! Hopefully we’ll get equally wonderful news about emifriend and pattirae soon too.

I am really enjoying watching Idol this year and like several of the contestants very much – just not nearly as much as our David. Knowing that he is watching too, I fantasize that his musically vibrating little self will run the few blocks from his house to mine, plunk himself down on the sofa and watch it with me on an extra grandmother to extra grandson basis. How fun would that be?! We could even vote together, although I’m not to the voting stage yet and don’t know if I ever will be.

Love, love, love Smoky Mountain memories!

  187. FG, thanks for the screencaps..gah..

haven’t noticed the cameramen on AI doing any “can you GET any closer?” closeups, of any contestants yet, like they did of David on his season.
so thankful for all the gorgeous fan videos, and pics of David through the years!Whatever would we do without them?
from now on will dvr the show to watch later, as the commercials make me crazy
just an observation from tonite’s show and Adam Lambert..
he performed well, but I was disgusted seeing Ryan fawn over him, after the way he dismissed David, when he went back on the show to sing Imagine” (just my humble opinion.)

  188. I just watched this from AnnieFromtheEU when David toured with McFly. He had just finished singing Angels at the piano and they are loving him! This is one of the best DLG videos I have seen, and ZG too. David was INTENSE! She said it was the best show in her opinion of them all, over there. Keep volume low, bass is loud.I don’t know how I am going to get to sleep now haha!
