David Archuleta ~ We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Box

Posted by MT on Tuesday, February 15, 2011

A Guessing Game…

Fit David into a box?  Which box?

Is it a curse to be so talented?  It shouldn’t be, but it must make for some agonizing decisions on David’s part.  What direction should he go?   What direction will he go?  There are many differing opinions on this and I’m sure David has heard them all.  David is in the rare position of having devoted, loyal fans whose musical tastes vary widely.

We’ve all watched a multitude of videos with David performing various types of music and most of us have listened to almost every song he’s ever sung, at least those posted anywhere on the web.  David enjoys singing anything and everything but he appears to really love belting out a song.  It seems (to me) to be what he both enjoys most and does best.  Watch the Z100 performance of Elevator.  He really let loose on that one, taking it to a whole other level while performing it in their studio, and he looked like he had a ball doing it.

Most of us have seen videos of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert (though we weren’t really supposed to, insert embarrassed face here).  David was so in his element.  These performances gave his voice the opportunity to soar, to do what David does best.  It was brilliant, and the joy on his face was beyond anything I have seen on him to date.   Part of it was the type of music he was singing, but I believe another part of that joy came from having the opportunity to set his voice free.  I have to say again:  the joy on his face was just stunning. (See: Los Pastores a Belen & Silent Night – David Archuleta w/the MOTAB, it’s a MUST SEE, just gorgeous).   In that respect, one would think that David would want to sing ballads, yet they are noticeably absent on his latest album.

We have heard David imply, during an interview, that he knows what direction he intends to take, that he just didn’t want to shock people by jumping straight from his previous style into one so different.

Credit Jake Chessum

What style?   Does he actually have a definite direction in mind?   Does he know what road he will eventually take?

David’s versatility is greatly discussed among the various sites.  His talent seems to be endless.   He is a musical sponge.   I believe he can sing, and sing well, almost any style he has ever listened to.  So, what is this musical genius to do?

Will he decide to do what he believes he sings best?  Will he choose the most popular?  Will he go with what he likes best, his own personal taste in music?  I would like to think that he shouldn’t have to choose.   He has the talent to do it all but has there ever been a singer who has done it all and succeeded?  There has been talk about the music industry trying something new, releasing digital singles rather than full albums.  Would this type of format help make it possible?

Only time will tell what David will decide to do so, for now it’s just a guessing game during a slow month in DavidLand.

With rumors of David returning to the recording studio let’s play, shall we?   And we can get to know each other a little more in the process.

Just for fun, let’s pick a box!

What kind of music did you listen to before David?  What is your personal preference in “non-David” music now?   What would YOU like to see David do next?

Hi all! This is a thought provoking post. I have written in the past that I assumed David’s career would have skyrocketed. By now he would have luxury of recording what he chooses, touring nonstop if he wanted. All because he’s so talented. I guess I’m so myopic in my vision when it comes to David that I just don’t understand people who don’t share my vision. Ok!

Before David Archuleta, I was really enjoying James Morrison. Paolo Nutini too. I also still play Dusty a springfield

I do not know much about music (almost anything) but I think the true style of David is in his voice. Three different songs and three different styles: Contigo en la Distancia, Zero Gravity or Crush, the stamp is unmistakable. David’s voice is recognizable among a thousand voices, and even so, we say, this is David Archuleta.
His first CD with many ballads and pop, was an act of responsibility, he had to sing what others had written and achieved, of course.
His second CD was an act of love, he wanted to tell about Christmas, family, about the importance of his family in every moment of his life and especially at that time. In his last cd, he opened his soul and let us see inside. I firmly believe he has already decided his future in music and gave us a sample with this latest cd.

The question here is, when we speculate about David and we think we know something, he always surprises us. And many times I had to swallow what I wrote. He has always exceeded all my expectations, always.

I always try to discover interesting things in David’s videos; his clothes, his laugh and whether or not he is comfortable in interviews. And if David is comfortable and relaxed anything can happen.

I have noticed over the years, David attaches great importance to song lyrics, whatever the style. In Spanish, French, English, or Latin, no matter the language, if he can cross the language barrier and transmit the words and the feeling…THIS IS DAVID ARCHULETA.
In my humble opinion, I say that David’s style is his voice.

Sorry. I’m still adjusting to my phone. I realize David is in his perky, positive mode. I do like the fact he’s an upbeat kind of person. Since he’s never been in a relationship, I suppose it is kind of hard to really relate to singing the blues or a passionate love song. But those are my picks. Blues or even some old classics like Smoke Gets In Your Eyes or Unchained Melody.

I love The Voice and come here every day. Thank you to all the admins. You do an awesome job!

I guess I would love to see a Spanish Cd from David. I haven’t listened to a lot of Spanish music but I recognize the appeal with this music and just love the sound of his voice singing it.I listen to different music. Have stayed away from pop, except for Michael Jackson. Love Stevie Wonder, Eva C. I also like some alternative and country. Like Sugarland, some Keith Urban and Brad Paisley. Love Italian ballads..lol John Mayer is good. Loving Adele. 🙂

“A musical sponge” indeed! The possibilities are endless when it comes to this stunningly talented young man! I, personally, love to hear David sing a power ballad such as ‘When You Say You Love Me’..no matter how many times I watch that performance, I get serious chills. I’m drawn to love songs because I’m a hopeless romantic..always have been since early in my teen years. I don’t think I’m far off the mark when I say everyone can identify with & enjoy a beautiful, moving love song. I’ve tweeted the song “To Make You Feel My Love” to David several times asking him if he might consider covering it some day. Certain “oldies” deserve to be revived by a VOICE such as David’s. Having said that, whatever he decides to do is OK by me & I’ll continue to support him with my entire being! ❤

What an awesome topic and post! “So what will the musical genius do?” this morning I came across this little musical genius video…gosh…. bluesy, soulful…. pop…. I had forgotten….

David can do anything! I hope even if he is defined eventually to one type of music, that he will always sings many genres at times. He is awesome musically! How many musicians can do what he does and with perfect pitch and emotion spilling out all over the place.

Then there was the little “scat” in Bubbly and the “na na na na” in My Hands at the Delta Fair… gosh….he is just awesome!

Somewhere I heard/read that David said that with TOSOD got his message across with the lyrics, but was musically uncomplicated. I see David moving towards creating more complex musically challenging melodies while retaining his deep need for meaningful lyrics.

HI again! Just had a light bulb go off in my head… So… the thing that sets David apart from other artists is the way he can change up a melody and improvise… right? His soulful, emotional, music gets me like no other… That is what we hear when he sings live, and that is what we do NOT have on his albums… I would love more! He can set himself apart from everyone with his musical genuis in his thing. That is how his emotions spill out of the melodies… We don’t hear that in recordings..then you put his raw emotions and body language in a performance and there is no one that can touch David live.

Hope I’m not posting too much. 🙂

My favorite music is “soft rock”. My favorite all time song is “Unchained Melody” which came out in the middle fifties. I was sixteen and in love with love. Garth Brooks singing “To Make You Feel My Love” gives me the chills. Johnny Mathis, The Everly Brothers, The Kingston Trio, and Elvis will always be favorites of mine. Now, I listen to Reba McEntire, Jon Secada, Garth Brooks, Brooke White, Melinda Doolittle and of course David.
I got the feeling that this third album will be the last of it’s kind for David. He talked about while still being a teenager he could put out this type of music. So, when he is older will that young sound turn to something more mature?

MT you’ve created a very thought provoking article here. I too love the way David can change up anything that he sings and find that perfect pitch and the emotions to go with it. My honest opinion, at this point, is that there is no box for David. He is too versatile and likes to experiment. I’m loving his current pop tendencies, but would also love to hear ballads and some gospel, and, of course, a lot more Christmas.

I used to listen to mainly 60-70’ish music. I have been (still am) a Creedence, LedZeplin, Elvis, etc., listener, so when David came along with his VOICE and music I really shocked myself by switching over to the pop/adult contemporary stations on the radio, and in my music collection. I would LOVE to hear ‘Unchained Melody’–died and gone to heaven with that song and that voice. Righteous Bros. move over. 🙂

Ray Charles. Found lots of lovely boxes to inhabit. Was lucky to find non-moron recording companies who recognized it and let him sit in any box he liked, and fans happy to follow him where ever he wanted to go. That’s what I want for David. Drives me nuts when people get upset when he does music not to their personal taste. Let the genius do what he wants, he’ll get around to your kind of music eventually, as long as we fans make making music fun for him.

Hard to remember my favorite music before David!!! I can’t seem to separate a person from their music, so I always want to listen to music by someone I admire as a person. Therefore….David is my favorite artist, and I will happily follow along whatever direction he chooses. The pop/rock/contemporary music industry is a difficult genre to be in….if David chooses to go a different direction that’s fine with me, but if he keeps putting one foot in front of the other in that world, we’ll be right behind him!

David’s priority has always been to accomplish good with his music – to make his like count in a positive manner. I would love for his popularity in the music world to soar so that he could touch more people with his kindness. But, if everything ended right now, he can say that he achieved the goal of touching people in a meaningful way. My life, and the lives of so many others, have been enriched by David and his fans. I believe he has so much more to give, and we as fans have so much more to give…it will be exciting to see what the Lord has in store…whatever direction it takes us…..

Thanks for all the great comments. You guys bring up so many great points.

#2 Gladys: “when we speculate about David and we think we know something, he always surprises us.”

Isn’t that the truth! He never ceases to surprise us. That’s just another one of the things I love about him.

Munk: Love those videos. You’re right, if they ever manage to capture that magic in a studio, there will be no stopping him. I love bluesy David, and that Reno “Works for Me” is one of my all time favorites. That bit at the beginning gets me every time. There is something in his natural ad libs that is just incomparable. There’s something that comes through when he’s comfortable and just going with what he feels that can’t be duplicated. That is David at his best.

    14. Tawna: “My honest opinion, at this point, is that there is no box for David.”

That’s kind of how I feel, too. I don’t want him in one box. I really would love to see him do anything and everything that he would like to. I’d hate to see someone so talented be pigeonholed. Although I do admit I am waiting for the day he does a full blown love ballad.

    15. Barbs, I’m gonna have to check out Ray Charles.

PaulaFOD: “David is my favorite artist, and I will happily follow along whatever direction he chooses.”

That’s me. I don’t know where he will go, but I’ll be trailing right along, loving whatever he chooses to sing. I used to listen to only country music before David came along. Then I went to Pop to hear him on the radio. Now that they won’t play him, I pretty much listen to only David’s music..

What a thought provoking article. I grew up in the 50’s, but I like all kinds of music. My mother was the “girl singer” with a band in the big band days. So, I like music from that era, all the way up to today’s music. I think of David as a modern day Mel Torme, or even Stevie Wonder. I know he forgot the lyrics of We Can Work It Out during his performance on American Idol, but if you listen to the studio recording of it, it’s amazing. He has a way of phrasing the lyrics that definitely lends itself to jazz/R&B/blues. But when he sings sacred music, he just takes us to another world. Be Still My Soul (Rexburg) and Silent Night with Orla Fallon, had the most ethereal sound I’ve ever heard. Or, his singing of Bless the Broken Road and Contigo en la Distancia with such emotion. He just has a way of transforming himself and his voice to fit the mood and spirit of the music. Who else can go from ballads, to jazz/R&B, to sacred music, to quirky, to country, to Latin music without missing a beat. I think he’s the most versatile singer out there. I know there certainly isn’t anyone today who’s even close to him. I just want him to sing whatever makes him happy, and I’ll be happy to hear it, and will buy anything he puts out there. But as far as putting him in a box goes, I don’t think David will ever stick to just one style. I think he’ll sing whatever he wants, because he can.

I have given some thought about who I like to listen to besides David. Of course I have heard all the popular singers from the 50’s to the present, but The Beatles, Elton John and Paul Simon and Bob Dylan are still my favorites.I will say, that I prefer their older songs. I have a thing for singer/songwriters, I guess. I like a good story in a song.

Someone I have rediscovered recently by way of a documentary,is Harry Nilsson. He passed away in 1993. His most recognizable song was the Theme song in Midnight Cowboy, “Everybody’s Talkin'”. He was a musical renaissance man.He wrote songs for many top groups as well as jingles for commercials. He was the first singer to multi-track his own voice (instead of back up vocalists) on recordings for a fuller, richer sound. He loved everything about creating the music. He never performed live;just too shy. Lennon called him “My favorite American group!” Harry was a bit of a tortured soul, but in the last years of his life he found true love and happiness. Here’s a bio if anyone wishes to read. http://www.classicbands.com/nilsson.html

I would love to hear David sing this. It’s hauntingly beautiful. Harry had a vocal range of 3 octaves, as does David. The 1:25 mark is amazing.

    Gladys

“His second CD was an act of love,”

I agree with this statement. He has opened up his heart to fans with TOSOD. He tells us from the depths of his soul what he wants in this life.

When I read this, it made me think about a recent tweet of David’s.

How about no box at all? Talent like David’s cannot be contained. He loves music, all types, and he loves to sing. Pop, rock, pop-rock, country, Latin, Christian, holiday gospel, R&B…they all suit him so why not let him sing all of it? I don’t want him pressured into singing one particular style of music unless that’s what he wants for himself. Other than that, just let this man sing!

Like BeBe, I don’t want to put David in just one box. But I would like the “Big Romantic Love Song” box to be among David’s boxes. 🙂

Agreed!! He has the chops to do so much!! I guess that’s what prompted me to write this article. I can’t imagine being in David’s shoes and trying to decide on only one genre. I love anything David sings! In the 50’s and 60’s I liked anything you could dance to. I was happy to be present in Reno when David did the Works For Me that many of us fell in love with. What made it so amazing was that David had to ad lib the beginning because Mike was having trouble with his guitar. It turns out that element is something many of us love as Munk so aptly put it. I enjoy the bluesy element that slips in @ times. His MoTab singing was breathtaking as was his Contigo en la Distancia. One song I would still love to hear David sing LIVE is Let Me Go from his first album. I loved the beat of that song and the round and round we go and the Lows and highs….. Maybe David didn’t like the message but he could sing it and I always felt like dancing. (even though I was driving)
I hope he can sing songs that other would love as much as some of these that get awards. Great topic to ramble too! ha!

Right now I would really like to hear David sing Michael Jackson’s I’ll Be There, last week I really wanted to hear Good Place, well that want hasn’t gone anywhere I’m just adding to it. It’s like this for me with David.

Everything he sings becomes his, it doesn’t matter who the original singer is and I don’t believe anyone has ever been able to do this at least in my lifetime. He is a gifted genius if that’s a term, I don’t know but it sounds good to me.

Mt – this article was such a great idea. David has fans from ever conceivable background. But we all have at least one thing in common. We love and recognize good music.
I grew up in Detroit in the 60’and 70’s and was raised on Motown. The songs I heard all the time were The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, The Tempations, Diana Ross, Smoky Robinson, etc.

I hope David never stops singing all genres of music. He certainly KNOWS everything ever recorded!

But I do love his R&B side.

I have always listened to a variety of music though.
Bob Seger, Josh Groban, Tom Petty, James Taylor, Vince Gill, Reo Speedwagon, Carol King, Elton John, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Clint Black, Allison Krauss, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Jon Secada, Deftones. It IS a bizarre list. 🙂
I still like all types of music. But I have to listen to David every single day. It’s like breathing to me.
He’s been at the top of my list for 3 years now. ♥

MT Thank you so much for this great post. It really does get the brain going, but what is great is the final comment of everyone boils down to, “As long as that would make David happy.”

Munk #10 “… what sets David apart is his ability to change it up and improvise”….. I so agree. I would love to see his future music, in any genre, where he just “let’s go” and frees himself. No nervousness, no emotional, or any other kind of boundaries. Just pure release of his “pure” and amazing talent, such as in “Elevator z100, No Air, Ave Maria, Rio Speedwagon visit, When you say you love me, Dream Sky High, to just get me started. The result for me is either a “just what happened” jaw dropper or sometimes, simply tears. So it’s not the genre,,, he can do anything. An album of live performances would be awesome.

About the box; I just want to get that box out and have him stand on top of it, so he can even more easily “let it rip”!

  35. wow, great subject, great article MT! Love reading it, and all the comments tonight.

The only box I could ever see David in,is a jukebox. Isn’t that what they used to say about him
    anyway? He’s “a walking jukebox”?
We know whatever style of music, whatever genre, whatever language,he chooses to sing in, he will always be tellin’ it to us,and making dang sure we understand it 🙂

David has certainly changed the way I listen to music, and who I listen to.Pretty much pick and choose with a better ear now, and find myself liking artists I would not have ever discovered without David suggesting. Absolutely love The Civil Wars now.Joy and her talented partner.Amazing

the Temps, the Tops, Jackie Wilson,Aretha, Wilson Pickett Sam and Dave,…ahh sweet soul music with a great dance beat…never tire of the endless list of songs that came from those artists. I know David has alot of soul music inside of him,and the moves to go with, so would love to see him throw in something with alot of soul like Sam and Dave, (hey, we got Stand By Me,it could happen!) ahhh David, picturing you singing anything right now, from Motown, to Motab sounds good to me. Need tour…:(

What a fun topic! We are such a diverse group. Before David, I listened almost exclusively to classical music and opera. My husband swears if I ever leave him, it will be for someone with a luscious, Italian tenor opera voice. Heh. David is really a musical departure for me. The first time I heard him sing, I thought how much I would love to hear him sing Ave Maria, Recondita Armonia, or Una Furtiva Lagrima. His rich voice, vocal skills, and emotional expression combine into something sublime when he belts out a powerful song. I listen to selections from CFTH year round and would cheerfully trade any number of relatives for a clear recording of Gesu Bambino. Aside from David and classical music, I do like Secret Garden, and I liked Eva Cassidy and Sara B. even pre-David. I vote for no boxes for David’s talent. If he sings it, I will listen…and enjoy.

MT, love your article, what a great topic. And nice to see so many old and new faces lately, hope to see more of everyone.

Munk, thanks for the WFM, gave me chills all over again! Does anyone remember, was the WFM merry-go- round the very first one?

Xaris, “would cheerfully trade any number of relatives for a clear recording of Gesu Bambino.” LOL!!

I used to listen to pretty much everything, (except pop and rap, lol) then tired of it all and started listening to real singers of the 30’s 40’s and 50’s. And then I saw WOTWTC, knew he was special; but Imagine is when I entered the danger zone, the point of no return. As famous as it was, that song had never really touched me until he sang it.

I just think he knows exactly what he wants to do and is waiting for the right time in his life and his career. And I don’t think it is anything we have really heard much of from him yet. Just a weird hunch.

May he never stop making Christmas albums. And I do hope we get some heart wrenching, beautiful love ballads (and sooner than later would be just, well, great) and I do love his r&b side; but he has me, regardless. .. heart and soul, yesterday, today and tomorrow (sounds like my Valentines Day card!)

So, what plans would he have to change in windy, rainy LA – surfing? beach volleyball? walking that little dog?

    Abrra #19, dang you!

I had company earlier and just logged on a while ago and have been in a Nilsson Smilsson fog ever since I saw that vid you posted. How I loved that song so many years ago without knowing anything about the singer. I have spent the last two hours playing “Without You” almost non-stop and several other Harry Nillson songs and searching Wikipedia and your link to learn more about him. He was abandoned by his father at the age of 4 and grew up in poverty and moved around a lot. Had only a 9th grade education and at one point when his mother moved from the the Bronx, NY to California, his Uncle John, a mechanic, helped him “improve his vocal and musical abilities.” That’s it. That’s all he had and the rest was self-taught. His voice is incredibly beautiful and his song writing influenced the Beatles. There is so much of David I feel and hear in him. The emotion and pathos in his voice in “Without You”, (I saw that Spanish version too in my searches tonight). His voice breaks like a heart on some notes on purpose the way David’s does at times. Then there are the playful, quirky lyrics of many other songs like “Me and My Arrow.”

Note the back up vocals to himself. And listen to the haunting beauty of “One” he wrote that was a hit for 3 Dog Night and much better done in the stripped down version by him IMO.

And like you say in your comment, “He was the first singer to multi-track his own voice (instead of back up vocalists) on recordings for a fuller, richer sound.” We all know how well David has used that technique too.

Later on he would go on to record classics like “As Time Goes By” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” There was no box for him. Tomorrow I want to respond more on MT’s article that started all this. But I could see David following somewhat in Nilsson’s footsteps musically. Pure genius that can not be confined.

“When John Lennon and Paul McCartney held a press conference in 1968 to announce the formation of Apple Corps, John was asked to name his favorite American artist. He replied, “Nilsson”. Paul was then asked to name his favorite American group. He replied, “Nilsson”.” ~ Wikipedia.

Thanks mt952 for the post above 🙂 I have often pondered about what direction David’s music will take him, in time David will find his niche. He said his next album will have a more mature feel to it, so time will tell.

No matter what direction his journey may fall,I will be there for the ride. Although I must say I love it when he sings R&B, Ballads & music that has an International feel to it.

His is Christmas music was outstanding. I only wished I could of made it to this concert, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be. My wish is for him to Tour Internationally; his pure voice, heart & soul should be heard & felt accross the borders live.

Well this is all my brain can muster for now, have a lovely day all 🙂

MT, Just love how this topic brings out so many wonderful comments and that his fans have such diverse musical tastes like David. Since he can’t be put in one box, how about an endless array of Chinese nested boxes where when you take the lid off one, inside you will find another box, then another box, and on and on. Each box can represent what genre you like but then you are surprised all over again with the next box holding another special gift, perhaps, another genre or vocal style or a different creative interpretation, etc.; whatever it may be, each performance is inspiring, unique and memorable.

David is truly a multi-dimensional performer and having been fortunate enough to see him at MoTab as well as at The Grove, it is amazing to see and hear how he can transform from a classical gut-wrenching Bocelli-like performer to an energized, commanding pop, bordering-on-rock star entertainer. What singer has this ability along with unmatched technical skills, emotive ability to connect with the audience and the gift of improvisation? With his talent, his potential is endless and I can’t imagine David being limited to one genre of music. For me, he can sing whatever his heart desires and I will happily wait for whatever that may be.

I remember in the fifties, people tried to put Elvis in a box. Pat Boone sang ballads and Elvis sang rock and roll. When Elvis started singing ballads, the adults said that he couldn’t do it because He didn’t have the voice, but he did! Then when he was to put out a Christmas album the adults said that it was impossible. They didn’t think that Elvis had the voice or a humble personality. Well, he did! Elvis could sing anything and make it sound sooo good!!! I think that this is one of the reasons some of us compare David with Elvis. Elvis was signed with RCA Record Co. and his songs were on the radio 24/7. We bought individual records with two songs on them or we could buy an album. I had a lot of 45’s of Elvis’s music. I miss those days.

Ooooh, seeing all these videos makes me want to see David out there doing his thing again…soon! He exudes such happiness when he’s performing, and it’s so contagious! I miss those nightly ninja videos that were posted while he was touring. It always gave me something to look forward to at the end of a hard day. Tour. Please. Soon. I need to remind myself that “good things come to those who wait!”

I am loving the “boxes” discussion. Like so many have already expressed, to choose one box is too hard–just when I’m sure he is best at the R&B stuff, he throws out some incredible ballad, or busts out some high energy pop song, or floors me with some emotionally moving inspirational song! Any box will do…as long as there is a box, I’ll be happy!

Looking at my own musical preferences, “the boxes” have totally changed over the years…as a teenager, I loved listening to James Taylor, Kenny Loggins, Dan Fogelberg, America, Chicago and Styx. In college, I moved on to Michael Jackson, Earth Wind and Fire and others. Then as the years rolled by, it turned into Sesame Street, Barney, and Parachute Express! Haha! After that, was my Broadway musical phase. And inspirational music has been interwoven throughout my entire life. Oh, and Barbara Streisand was in there somewhere too! No wonder I like David…he does it all so well!

Hoping for any news soon…even a hangnail would keep me going! Haha! Thanks to all for the great videos, posts and comments–always love checking in here each night.

    That was an interesting read.

    I found this paragraph baffling.

“We are more about relating to our audiences than what the labels wanted us to be,” Michael Timmins said, referring, in part, to the band’s embrace of fan bootlegs. “That’s why we’ve survived. We might have had more economic success, but then I don’t think we’d still be around.”

I am not really clear on what “fan bootlegs” means.

My personal opinion is that David could do something similar by utilizing the web to create his own “label” of his music. About 18 months ago, i recall his brother saying on twitter that Jeff Archuleta bought some instruments and recording equipment to make a home studio. The purpose being that they can work on writing and work out musical arrangements.

Should David ever go independent, I have no doubt that fans would flock to a David Archuleta community site where he was in control of the content. The official site that is run by the label lacks the personal touch. That’s the best way I can describe it (as I see it). It’s hard to get the feel of who David is as a an artist or a person. All the good things he does for charity are MISSING. That’s a big part of who he is and how he shares his talent. Just about any of the fan sites run by fans (/grin) do a better job in telling his story.

    Fun article MT!

I’m all for not putting David in a box but do like both the jukebox and endless nesting box analogies. Some folks used to call television sets “boxes” and I wouldn’t mind seeing him there too. As for what I would like to see David do next? Tour! Tour! Tour!

As for other-than-David music I listen to, I love classical, jazz, New Age, Celtic and some weird stuff like Helpers, Guide and Allies, an album that you have to listen to at a high volume; it’s an experience – very Native American/shamanistic. I also adore bagpipes accompanied by didgeridoos. Something very primal going on with those! Let’s see, I love chants – Buddhist and Gregorian.

Because David captured my attention and my heart, I started watching the Grammys for the first time in many years and rediscovered my love for country music (love Sugarland, Lady Antebellum, Keith Urban, etc). Growing up in rural Utah, I had to travel by bus to a different town for high school. Every day on the way to and from school, my friends and I sang, in harmony, all the current country songs, which we learned by listening to one of only two radio stations available in our area, KOMA out of Oklahoma City. We knew all the lyrics and all the parts (I’m an alto). Fantastically fun times!

Through the years I have liked Neil Diamond, Tom Jones, Moody Blues, Barry White, etc., but have never, ever been a fan of anyone like I am of David. In fact, I listened to mostly instrumental music for years with few exceptions. I did go through a Celine Dion phase and absolutely adore Sarah Brightman’s music. Josh Grobin and Andrea Bocelli also hold my interest.

Now I listen mostly to David’s music. Go figure. 🙂

This article has inspired me to load many of my CDs on my iPod. The first one will be a Taliesin Orchestra CD that includes Mozart’s Lacrimosa, and then I must find the Evanescence version of it.

I hesitated to comment because I was afraid I would get carried away (always do when talking about music) and, yeah, I did. Sorry!

Abrra, Exactly! David’s site is generic. It needs to be “David” and reflect who he is as a person too. You are right, people would flock to it! And his connection with the audience, what he wants to create and how he wants to produce it are going to be more personal and important to him the older he gets. I think we saw evidence of that with this last album. He insisted on control of the lyrics and content….and some melodies. But I know he said he wants to produce his own music or have more control of that. TOSOD was a bridge album to what he really wants to do musically. I saw a quote on twitter this morning that I thought was related to David. It said something like there are too many copy cat musicians out there..that it goes to show the lack of courage. I thought to myself, not David! He’s going to emerge as one of the greatest artists of the day!

David is fearless when it comes to his music. If he learned anything along the way, it was to be original. In COS he talks about how his dad taught him early on to make a song memorable. Give it something special, a moment that will make it unique. The runs we hear in the “humming’ and “When you say nothing at all” videos are what makes David’s music his own.

    100. Fanis Archangelicus: Thanks! And I loved your long post. I find it so interesting to hear what music people have been a fan of. You’re tastes vary widely all on your own. I, too, have had many different favorites over the years. Maybe one of the things that appeals to us is that David does so many different styles. I look forward to the variety of music David provides.

103 Abrra: So right. The humming videos are a perfect example of why David will continue on and, as Munk said and we all believe, “be one of the greats.”

Even with no words, there is something that comes through in his voice. It’s not Pop, or country, or soul, or R&B, or anything in particular. It’s “The Voice.” (You guys really did pick the perfect name for this site.) It’s that unique quality that we can’t really define that’ll be what makes him great. So, no box, any box, or all of the boxes, I don’t doubt that David’s voice will continue to be heard for many years to come.

I loved your comment! Yes! Yes! I love so many of the music genres you listed! How fun that is.

(Insert here: An absolutely DA moment. ((As if that were not what ALL of this is about!!))I have been watching a bit of the new season of Idol. I just wanted to see. Never watched it before or since DA. Seems they pooled twice the number to draw from. Conclusion? There is no one like DA. Voice wise? Maybe some have the talent. But the combination of character, absence of ego, abundance of kindness and North Star dedication to own ethics… nowhere. Where did he come from?)

Back to music. (As if that were not what this is all about. ^_^ “The music of the ‘Light’ ((!!!))…((Oh my gosh, I am ADD this morning!)) *_*)

Besides all the stuff FA mentioned, one group that my sons got me into and that I have not found quite the equal of music-wise is Guster. They never made it to the radio that I know of, but I just love them, their vibe, their talent, their obvious love of music (some singers/groups… ya know, I sometimes wonder if they really do love ‘music’?) just draws me in and makes me really want to listen to what they are saying, not just be entertained by their music.

One of my favorite Guster songs is: “What You Wish For”. It begins by saying that: you are never going to get what you wish for, so why not just stay in bed and forget it! Then it goes on to say… well, on the other hand… you just might! Would you be surprised? They have such great harmony and the drums/rhythm are to die for. Then they toss in the counter-melodies. *sigh*
Well, I am one that believes that you can’t talk about good music and be off the subject of DA. (Hoping!)

So here are some of the lyrics to What You Wish For:

    Once had this dream
    Crashed down in oz
    Not black and white
    But where the colors are
I never dreamed that I would let it go

And I will get what I deserve
Keep all the secrets under the bed
Open the curtains forget what I said

And what you wish for could come true
You aren’t surprised, love, are you
So what you wish for could come true
You act surprised, love, are you

DA always acts surprised. But (Oh, my gosh!) he is surprising! It is fun to see that he gets surprised as well. Here is to all his lovely ‘decisions’ surprising him in a wonderful way!!

    Note:

Guster uses “Tapers” to feed and satisfy fans. (We do sound a bit hungry, don’t we?) The article Munk mentioned above talks about how that group uses “Bootleggers” to (basically) feed the fans. Since we have had similar issues on our minds, I thought you might like to know.

These are the bits of definitions from Wiki.

    Taper:

A Taper is a person who records musical events often from standing microphones in the audience for the benefit of the musical group’s fanbase. Such taping was popularized in the late 1960s and early 1970s by fans of the Grateful Dead.[1] Audio recording was allowed at shows and fans would share their tapes through trade. Taping and trading became a Grateful Dead sub-culture.[2]

Tapers generally do not financially profit from recording such concerts and record using their own equipment with permission from the artist. Taper recordings are commonly considered legal because the recordings are permitted and distribution is free. Taper etiquette strictly excludes bootlegging for profit. “Stealth taper” is a common term for a person who may furtively bring equipment into shows to record without explicit permission.

    Bootlegging:

A bootleg recording is an audio and/or video recording of a performance that was not officially released by the artist, or under other legal authority.[1] The process of making and distributing such recordings is known as bootlegging. A great many such recordings are simply copied and traded among fans of the artist without financial exchange, but some bootleggers are able to sell these rarities for profit, sometimes by adding professional-quality sound engineering and packaging to the raw material.

Bootlegs can consist of recordings of live performances, or material created in private or professional recording sessions. Changing technologies have had a great impact on the recording, distribution, and varying profitability of the underground industry. The copyrights for the song and the right to authorize recordings often reside with the artist, according to several international copyright treaties. The recording, trading and sale of bootlegs continues to thrive, however, even as artists and record companies attempt to provide “authorized” alternatives to satisfy the demand.

So David fired WEG. If we are trusting David, then he had good reason. IMO, one of those reasons may have to do with NOTHING happening for the last 6 weeks & nothing scheduled in the near future as far as I know. So what was he paying them for?

Whatever his reasons were, it’s done and just have to wait & see. He did say he was “excited about the future”. Whatever his future holds…another management or a break from the business, if he’s excited about it, it means it’s what he wants and he should know his fans will stand by him.

All this time at home must have been spent contemplating, seeking advise from those he trusts, and most of all, praying. Obviously, he did not come by this decision lightly. And I’m sure he knows what his next step will be. He may already have new mgmt. In fact, David may have been “shopping around” for new mgmt while he was home OR he may have been approached by a management group who can take David where he wants to go. Anyway, whatever else he decides for his future, he has our support and our loyalty. As I said previously, David’s fans are not typical and we will stand by him. I hope he knows that.

Was never in the game for the cash, but for the music.I just wish Harry Nilsson was still around.

One thing we have to remember is that nothing has been announced officially by WEG or David. Melinda works for WEG, she is not WEG and showed poor judgement using twitter to announce the split, then continuing to “speak” for David. Not only was it unprofessional, it showed a lack of class.

I unfollowed her on twitter and suggested David’s fans do the same. He never followed her, even after she asked him to so why would his fans want to keep following her if she has no ties to David anymore?

I hope we hear from David soon. A Vlog would be great, bit a tweet would be good too.

I feel a new article coming on by Angelica. 🙂

This is a bio-documentary that is well worth the 14.99 cost on iTunes . There is a free preview you can look at.
When I listen to the people talk about the Harry genious they knew, I can hear it like they were talking about David. ( I have seen the film)

Copy and paste this into itunes store search to find it.

David has told us that he wants to do an international tour and he wants to make a Spanish album this year. Maybe WEG wasn’t making it happen or they wanted to make it happen in a way that David couldn’t agree upon. I have this feeling that something big is happening with David and his career. Holy cow!…pig and horse! I log on here tonight to see if there is possibly a “hangnail” of news, and I get full Nail Salon!! Haha! Wow! Lots going on. Lots of changes. Still trying to digest it all, and still sooo much we don’t know. All I can say right now is that no one knows better than David what he wants with his life and career…and there is no one better to make the hard decisions than himself. I am actually very proud of him–it couldn’t have been an easy decision, and I’m sure he must have felt very strongly about it to move forward. I fully trust that he is taking the best path for him at this time…I actually feel really good about it. I never felt that David and Melinda were a good match–he needs someone who really gets him, and if what they say about JIVE is true, well you know how we all feel about that match up!

This whole situation just further shows me that David doesn’t just talk the talk, he walks the walk!

“Sometimes you just know when to hold on …when to let go.”
“At least I took a chance…I had to let it go.”
“Cut the ribbon if it starts to fray”
“It’s ok, ’cause I know where I’m going”
“I’m gonna take this moment that I’m in right now, stop the craziness somehow.”
“Next time I’ll get it right, next time I’ll be Ok, I’ll have a different dream tonight, tomorrow’s another day”
“Hang on, hang in for the ride of your life…it’s gonna’ be alright…hold on tight.”

Ok, so I’m getting carried away, but you get my point. Frankly, I can’t wait for this next chapter in the sequel to “Chords of Strength”! What a ride!

And I have to say that I love how David casually puts all his concerned fans at ease with his AI tweet instead of launching off on twitter. He will let us know when he is ready. What a classy guy!

Mt- This article has really sparked some great ideas and wonderful discussions. I would like to add my own possibility for David since he is currently at this crossroads. This scenario was born in my pea brain as the result of a significant other's wish to share video of Jason Mraz. Love him so why not I thought and David loves his music, too.

The setting, the venue, the accompanyment, just the sheer realness of this made me just sigh at the thought that David could do something like this. I am left wondering if this would be good for David. I believe he would love this and speaking for myself I would too. So whether this could be something good for his career, well who knows. David is still exploring his music. I would like him to sample the world's music and incorporate it all into his genius abilities. I am so dreaming big for him but in a different sense. Would something like this allow us all to be satisfied? Hope you enjoy the vid.

Does he still have the most gorgeous face?

    Is David still David?

How much should I worry, scale of 1-10?

    Ok, it’s official.

A label rep confirms the season 7 runner-up is no longer on the roster.

    February 18
1:11 PM 2/18/2011 by Shirley Halperin

After Twitter lit up last night with rumors that David Archuleta had been dropped by Jive Records, his label home since 2008, a Jive spokesperson confirms to The Hollywood Reporter that “David was released from our roster.”

Archuleta’s latest album, 2010’s The Other Side of Down, failed to gain traction at radio or on the charts, where it’s sold just over 63,000 copies. That’s a far cry from his 2008 self-titled debut, which moved nearly a million units and has been certified platinum.

The season 7 finale which pitted Archuleta against eventual victor David Cook logged over 97 million votes, the highest total the show had seen until the next year’s face-off between Adam Lambert and Kris Allen, which drew 100 million.

Archuleta recently spoke with THR about his Idol experience, recalling the early weeks when America was first getting to know the contestants. Said Archie: “I was just wondering what’s the future going to be like? How hard is it going to be? Am I going to be able to handle it all? I think part of that stress is good because it keeps you focused.”

Was gone yesterday and received all this news this morning.
I am just perplexed and puzzled like everyone else–but I feel David will tell us whats up when he is ready and has all his ducks in a row. One thing I refuse to do is speculate about something I know nothing about.

Speculation is a blind and dangerous road–one best not taken.

As for Sour Grapes Melinda, didn’t she do this once before to David–speak for him on twitter?

Thank you to Dja-Bebe–Abbra and all who know where to go to get the latest info and pass it on to us. I suppose this was all covered in chat last nite–dang.

IMO–Jive did nothing to promote their asset and never appreciated him for the artist he is, and I hate the word “dropped” as I’m sure renewal decisions were up and coming anyway. On both sides.

I will always support David in any choice he makes. ( I say with a heavy heart).

Interesting read about The Civil Wars and Nate, Joy’s husband.

“Nate has been in the industry for about a decade, doing A&R and radio,” said Williams. “Contracts were getting so much more constraining for artists that he in good conscience didn’t feel that he could hand them out any longer, so he actually left his post. I had left my label deal at that point too, and we were like, ‘What do we want to do? What’s next? The way that the industry’s changing, what do we need?’ ”

David Archuleta is a wonderful vocal talent and an even better person. I was confused by the non-promotion of David’s second pop offering by Jive Records after the strong sales of his initial offering and his seasonal release ‘Christmas From The Heart’. I truly believe with David’s A&R rep leaving Jive along with many others including the label president, this Sony imprint just did not know what to do with David as he does not fit well with their current roster. David was not ‘dropped’ but ‘released’. He provided Jive with the three CD’s he was contracted for. Perhaps a label such as Decca Records (Universal) would be a better fit. Best of luck to a great vocalist. Onward and upward David!

I looked at that site. It’s an invite to bash Jive. I did not post there. It all seems a bit self serving. Why would a radio station think they have such power?
“it will be sure to have a big impact and we’ll pass it along to all of the movers and shakers of the record industry.”

Anyone who is a mover and shaker can see the handwriting on the wall about Jive’s lack of promotion for David’s latest CD.

I prefer to let David decide his future. Not a web site by a radio station who has no connection to him and most likely did not play his music.

I don’t want to think he isn’t proud, to think that no one wanted to hear his work, that the heart & soul he poured into TOSOD, went unappreciated. Did he asked to be released? I feel like I need him to comment on this situation. I need to know where his head is. What is he going to do next? This is the cruel business of show business. You’re only as good as your last record. To Jive, it doesn’t matter that David made them a lot of money with a double platinum single and an almost platinum first album. They are only concerned with what their clients have done for them lately. And that goes for anyone and everyone else on their ‘roster’. Nobody is safe, IMO.

Jive was just a stepping stone for David. Jive gave him his first recording contract and because of it, he was able to make three records that have become part of our DNA for the last three years.

This is just the beginning of his career. He couldn’t stay with Jive forever; he was not appreciated nor recognized for his talents. It sounds so dramatic to hear that a label ‘dropped’ an artist. But I believe it was an amicable split on both sides. David fulfilled his contract and now can find a label that is more suitable for him.

FG and others, I think David will talk to us soon. Doesn’t he always appear when we need him?

    Hi everyone,
Silverfox …”David came into our world (mine anyway) like a bolt of lightening, continued through it at times like a hurricane, and yesterday like a .7 earthquake, he shook my world to the core!”
Boy, aint that the truth? What an unbelievable three years! The world has been a brighter, happier, and infinitely more hopeful place with David and his voice in it. If the skies in my world were grey, David world was sunshine. The joy and friends that David has given me have been a totally unexpected gift. I am amazed by, and thankful for, this experience, and all of you, and look forward to the future. I need his voice in my life. Bottom line, I want David to be happy. If I can know that, everything is fine.

214.Bebe,no doubt about it,David will talk to us soon, and when he is ready. Wouldn’t want it any other way. Everything you stated is true, of course.
Sometimes (actually alot) my heart manages to take over my brain where David is concerned.Today was just one of those days.
In fact, if I were to go get an x-ray right now, I think it would show my heart has developed its own working mouth, cause its giving me alot of lip today.
hmmm, mouth, lips. ah, think I will go watch some videos.:))))
    sleep well everyone.love you all.

If someone has already posted any of this, sorry. It is late and my brain is fried!!!

These are some comments made by Richard Parkenson on the FOD chat tonight. I thought they really resonated with how I was feeling, but he puts it so clearly and has a closer (experience wise and friend wise) view than I do. Hope it is okay to post this here.
    Love you guys.

    Rich:
This is only my opinion… David needs to sing the songs that resonate through him to the masses. Again, this is only my opinion, but if you look back at the songs he sang that made everyone fall in love with him, they were so different than what he is singing now. I know that you all love David, I get that. It is so easy for you to love everything that he does because he has inspired you, moved you, gotten you to fly across the country to hear him sing. I get that. But, he has yet to tap into what he should really be writing and singing. Again, only my opinion. When he does though, it will be amazing. It might be a while… he is only 20.

    Rich:
David is one of those artists who can take on a HUGE song and nail it. Not everyone can do that. He has yet to have a song like that on either of his pop albums.

    Rich:
I’m not sad… David has just received a hands on education about the music industry, and he has been paid handsomely to go through it all. He will learn from all of his experiences and be just fine, trust me.

  222. Well, in my opinion I like David’s style and special that way of singing he has. I’d like to see next more songs like TOSOD, that’s my favorite one. I love when he sings in spanish. I don’t know yet if he has realized he has a lot of fans from Latinamerica but he really is amired by latins. So, I’m sure there are other like me who would like David to record an album in spanish. Maybe some hits he had in english such as “CRUSH”, “ZERO GRAVITY”, “A LITTLE TOO NOT OVER YOU” and at present “THE OTHER SIDE OF DOWN” but now in spanish, that would be great. David’s decision was okay with me, you don’t know why things happens, I’m sure better things will come for him and his carrer. So in my humild opinion I’d like to listen to a David’s album completely in spanish. David has become one of the best young performers and he’ll do the better for saving and continue his career as singer for sure!
