David Archuleta ~ Exiting the Trance

Posted by thefunnygirl on Thursday, February 10, 2011

The first picture is a VIP picture of David at the DTE Energy Theater in Clarkston, Michigan, looking like he might need his momma at Costco.  The second picture is from his performance at DTE a few hours later, in some sort of trance on-stage, looking like he don’t need nobody’s help with nothin.’  It’s as if he goes somewhere else when he’s singing.  Or something else is in control.  Or maybe both.

From the early idol days I have felt that he doesn’t perform, but that he channels music.  Some awesome reporter at the MoTab press conference asked him about how he can sing through an emotional song; how he pushes through getting caught up in the moment.  His reply had me screaming YES YES! at my computer. “It’s like it comes from somewhere else…it’s kind of like being an instrument…..”  Thank you David.

The pictures in the slide show capture the moment right after the last note he sings, and right before he awakens.  He usually opens his eyes and smiles right after he exits the trance.  You can see him “coming to” sometimes with a look of  ‘oh my, there are people here’.  I wonder if he can feel that moment, because we can see it.

Song by Sarah MacLachlan, Prayer of St. Francis

His body language and moves while singing are not planned or deliberate, although I think he finds a comfort zone in some songs like Zero Gravity, where you will see the same moves at the same times in the song.  He is a different entity altogether when he is singing.  Some say he is channeling a divine power, or rather that he is an instrument of God.  Others would call it pure emotive talent.  My mom put it so eloquently a long time ago, when I asked her why she thinks we love him so much.  “What he has is an ability to connect with another person soul-to-soul, in an instant, a gift so rare and that goes beyond his vocal talent.”

When I first met David’s dad, Jeff, I asked him what they did to raise such a kind and sweet son.  His answer surprised me and still gets me thinking to this day.  “We didn’t do anything, he came to us this way.”  I thought it a strange thing for a parent to say.  It was as if he was left at their doorstep, a fully mature spirit in a baby’s body.

Do you think that David goes somewhere else when he sings?  Where is it?  Do you think he knows?  Do you think he is an instrument?
