The Ripple Effect
Posted by Abrra on Sunday, February 6, 2011
I have spent the last week pondering what my next topic for an article would be. I never try to force it from my brain, it just shows up. We all have been extremely moved by his trip to India this January. How can you not be impressed by his desire to help the sick? It’s not something that most people his age set as a priority. He goes to the extreme this time by flying half way around the earth to acknowledge Rising Star Outreach, a charity he supports.
The whole experience reminded me of the term “ripple effect”. When you drop a stone into a lake you see the water ripple in concentric circles, outward. Like the stone, David has made ripples that expanded. Spreading much more help to those in the leprosy colony than he will ever know.
Drop a Pebble in the Water
Drop a pebble in the water:
just a splash, and it is gone;
But there’s half-a-hundred ripples
Circling on and on and on,
Spreading, spreading from the center,
flowing on out to the sea.
And there is no way of telling
where the end is going to be.Drop a word of cheer and kindness:
just a flash and it is gone;
But there’s half-a-hundred ripples
circling on and on and on,
Bearing hope and joy and comfort
on each splashing, dashing wave
Till you wouldn’t believe the volume
of the one kind word you gave.James W. Foley
This journey began when Dr. Scott McGavin told David about Rising Star Outreach back in fall of 2008. During his solo tour David mentioned RSO in a blog in March 2009. The fans responded overwhelmingly to the cause. Dr. McGavin gave his thanks in June before leaving on a trip to help children with dental needs in India.
As you can hear from the video, they received so much money that they put it to use with more projects. Can you see the ripples? Over the last several months, David gave his time to signing items to auction for the RSO. Some fans formed a group called Hearts and Hands. They created a patchwork quilt and pillow with pictures of David mixed in with some of his quotes.

From Hearts and Hands facebook page
More recently he got the chance to travel to India to perform at a benefit where the children did interpretive dance to Somebody Out There as David sang on stage. David also spent time visiting the leprosy colony with a medical team. He volunteered along side doctors cleaning wounds-a profound and life changing experience. Stacey Tookey, a choreographer along on the trip to India said, “What an amazing experience. Went there to teach the kids and instead they taught me so much.” She may have caught another ripple?

Collage by Djafan
While David was giving his time in India to the sick, back home the fan sites were donating money for bricks for the Pathway of Hope. “The Pathway of Hope winds between two very important buildings on the property of Rising Star Outreach. One ends starts with a plaque that gives thanks to all volunteers, supporters and those who have given in memoriam. The other end has a plaque that reads Pathway of Hope, Lovingly donated by fans of David Archuleta, Angels for a Cause. This plaque gives thanks to all fans of David Archuleta, fans from all over the world who worked for months to bring this project together. What started out as a small brick area, with a lovely bench has turned into a real piece of art!”
The best thing about this ripple effect of charity has been the coming together of people who share his desire to be of service to others. We have read here, on this site, about those who are collecting loose change at work and around the house for Rising Star Outreach. Every time you hold out the RSO jar and ask for change, you increase awareness of leprosy and the devastation is has wrought on these families. Another ripple moves outward, ever expanding the help that is so needed.
We have so much, I am so proud to know that we share so freely.
Update on donations from The Voice group on AFAC since January 28, 2011
Total for bricks $1,000.00 (20 bricks)
Total accrued for bricks that need inscription $165.00 (3.3 bricks)
For child sponsor $360.00 for year
Total dollars $1,525.00
Thank you all so much!

Wow, Abrra:))))) This is beautiful and I love the picture!!! There is nothing more to add here….you have said it all. I love the honesty, the brilliance in the articles, the artistry in the pictures used and the wonderful women who keep this magnificent fansite constantly updated and a joy to visit! Did I ever tell you how much I love it here?? Well, I do<3333333333
On another note, as I was reading the comments written to Pattirae in her caringbridge.com site keeping us up to date on her progress, I thought how wonderful it was to see how many of the fans from "The Voice" had commented today and how she had touched even the lives of those that have yet to meet her. As I was close to tears reading your comments, I got a text from her and the tears flowed! I was riding in the car with my husband and our little 22 month old granddaughter and I tried to hide them, but to no avail! I just love that woman so much and here she writes how she was thinking of me tonight. She thanked me for letting her daughter Amy know about David's vlog and then told me that this has been real tough, but today was a good day and she now feels like she is on the mend! Just thought I would add that on top of what Amy wrote tonight about Patti's blog.

Abrra…I love your article…you sure have a way with words. I love the poem by Thomas Foley. I am for sure going to say kind words to all I meet today.
As I read this article I thought of a song we sing at church called…
Because I Have Been Given Much by Grace Noll Crowell
Because I have been given much, I too must give;
Because of thy great bounty Lord, each day I live
I shall divide my gifts from thee With every brother that I see
Who has the need of help from me.
Because I have been sheltered, fed by they good care,
I cannot see another’s lack and I not share
My glowing fire, my loaf of bread, My roof’s safe shelter overhead,
That he too may be comforted.
Because I have been blessed by they great love, dear Lord,
I’ll share they love again, according to they word.
I shall give love to those in need; I’ll show that love by word and deed:
Thus shall my thanks be thanks indeed.
Thank you Shawna for telling us about Pattirae’s tweet. We drove passed IMC Friday night and tears began to flow. Couldn’t help it. My heart was so full thinking of her in that building facing the struggle that she is facing.
I continue to pray for her as well as Emi and Kaycee each day.

It is gentle, and soothing to look at, like the pebble that is David, and the ripples he has produced.
I love the poem.I love the fact that you have reminded us of the ripple effect we ALL produce, by our words, actions, and deeds

Good comparison: David’s good deeds to the ripple effect. It reminds me of the old saying, “One good deed begets another.”
At the Women’s Conference, David talked about how ‘you never know what a smile can do for someone’ (paraphrased).
In this case, David’s humility, like the ever expanding ripples on the water when an object is thrown into it, helped people many miles away, people whose lives will be changed forever. And it, in turn, can make another life better and so on and so on. All it takes is one act of kindness to get the ball rolling and the effects can be far-reaching!
Shawna,
Thank you for the update on Pattirae. Please continue to let her know how much we all think of her and that we have her in our thoughts and prayers. So many hospital patients are isolated so I love that she communicates with us through her blog and that we can do the same.
We had a full house in chat last night! Another great evening; we were there until we couldn’t keep our eyes open anymore. “One more video” is what we say, but we never listen. LOL So happy that Emifriend joined us last night in chat, to an outpouring of support when we all saw her name. We also had a new visitor last night; ZullyFOD joined us for the first time, I believe! We love new voices; it adds to the whole chat and fan experience.

I just love the message here of every act we do becoming a ripple for good or bad that goes on and on. David tosses so many beautiful pebbles on the water with his songs and good works and his ability to connect with people through his eyes and his smile. He started ripples of compassion with his emphasis on various charities and the ripple effect continues to grow and expand. I love these last two lines from “A Far Field” by my favorite poet, Theodore Roethke that express in imagery the far-reaching effects that follow from what we do.
“A ripple widening from a single stone
Winding around the waters of the world.”

Abrra, this is a great article about David’s undeniably charismatic ripple effect on everyone whose heart he touches. Chennai will always have a special spot in its heart for him.
My prayers and sincerest wishes for a steady and successful recovery go to Pattirae, Emifriend and Kaycee’s daughter. This is such a wonderful support group that David has helped create. The ripple effect is in constant motion wherever and whenever his name is mentioned.
I received a sad text from JR4DA today: “After 5 weeks, 2 surgeries & valiant effort, my dad peacefully joined The Creator at 4:45 pm today 7 February 2010.” An hour before this text, she was asking for prayers because he had turned for the worse. After relaying the sorrowful news, she thanked everyone for their support and prayers. And to think just about a month ago, on her birthday, she had asked for prayers because she didn’t want to lose her father the same day she lost her husband 20 years ago, also on her birthday. It was January 5th.

New interview in Spanish with David and Allison Iraheta from “Hoy”, Spanish website.
I used google translator to translate, only David’s part.
“Whatever Happened To Iraheta and Archuleta?”
Several things in common: both are Americans and descendants of Central American parents, came to “American Idol” at the minimum age of 16, have a serious tone in their voice, and despite not winning the competition, both signed contracts immediately to record their first album.
Both Allison Iraheta and David Archuleta speak Spanish and after 20 minutes on the phone with them, you might say, or at least venture, that they are two young mature people, simple, lovely and quite sure of what they want.
Fans of the game show “American Idol”, especially those who watched the seventh season, can’t forget the grand finale of the Davids: David Archuleta vs. David Cook. To the surprise of many, the verdict favored Cook, but despite owning only 44% of the vote, Archuleta left the show with a basket full of opportunities.
Three years of experience later, DavidArchie on Twitter has two albums of his own. The first, David Archuleta, sold over a million and half copies worldwide. The second, entitled “The Other Side of Down” was launched in October last year.
“The new record shows a little more of my personality, the ‘dorky’ David” he says.
Life has become as expected; he travels much more, has met many people and there are always people on the street who want to talk to him. “They feel they know you and begin to talk. It’s funny because sometimes I’m walking, normal, and suddenly someone comes up to me ‘Hey David, what’s up?’ I have no idea who they are, but they act like I’ve known them forever.”, he says with a laugh.
Being away from his parents and sharing evenings of movies and video games with his three sisters is what he misses. He said he doesn’t see them as often as before, however, he says he feels closer to them.
“I think I spend more time with them because I took them for granted. When I was in school I always felt they were there, but when you’re away you realize how much you love them and how important they are to you. It’s strange that I had to leave to notice.”
David claims to have a strong connection to the Latino community. His mother, Marie Lupe Mayorga is a salsa singer and dancer in Honduras, and he himself grew up in Miami, then moved to Utah.
In the midst of the interview, David begins to speak in Spanish explaining that he needs to practice more and that he dreams of recording an album in Spanish.
“My mother’s family is Latino. Their culture is very close to my heart. [He changes to English] I love my people, love my family, there’s something with the connection between … Latinos are passionate about things, as with music. [He changes back to Spanish] Latinos sing with a lot of heart and feeling. I think I learned that from my mom. ”
David just turned 20, and jokingly asks in his slightly awkward Spanish, “And do you know a Latina girl?”, he laughs.
“I want to keep the culture with my children, he adds, “It’s important. There is still time for that, but it’s something that I want. I want my children to be part of the Latino culture because it part of who I am as a person and the way I see things.”

I am so sorry for your lost. I loss my beloved mother in August of 2008 after a difficult illness. I had loved David on AI but had neither the time nor energy to “get” him. It was in January of 2009, still deep in my grief, I accidentally listened to him on youtube and right then, I was able to cry away some of the pain, hearing that beautiful, healing voice. Now, he helps me daily better handle my loss, and about everything else too, for that matter! I am so glad, that you already have David’s voice and spirit to help you through. (And all of us too.)

I like to have choked on my Diet Dr. Pepper and had a pretty long coughing spell. She’s walking along, mingling and laughing and minding her own business, when all of a sudden she sees THAT guy giving THAT look right at her! I visualize her not registering it at first and doing a glance away and then a spastic double take when she sees him still holding that gaze right before her knees buckle and down she goes. 😯 LOLOL! He could drop a girl at twenty paces with that look. He knows it too.

OMGOSH! That pdf from Rising Star Outreach! I love these folks so much! What an amazing accomplishment and it is still a work in progress! Seeing the pic of David looking down at the Pathway of Hope with mama Lupe looking on so proud and then both of them being showered with flower petals as they walked it! Is there video of this? I am so proud of him too and of all of you who have helped with this incredible endeavor to make dreams that were never even dreamed come true. Please keep saving and collecting that change and let us know when you donate. ♥

Muchas gracias, mi amiga.:) I sure had fun editing that article from “Hoy”.
But more importantly…David really knows how to mess with us. First this awesome pic shows up. And then one hour later, as if perfectly timed, he tweets about oh…how beautiful the day is! Give us a break, David! 😀
From the ridiculous to the sublime…Next comes the RSO newsletter with pics of David at the ceremony when he cut the ribbon for the Pathway of Hope. How proud to be a fan of this multi-faceted honorable human being.
And then he has the nerve to sing!

And that article from RSO is wonderful. Both David and his fans should be very proud. Hopefully, David’s participation will help to bring some much needed attention for RSO and the work they are doing. No one should ever be shunned and forgotten.

Oh Bebe – that Heaven is AMAZING!! He went to that place again. ♥
I was just going down memory lane tonight. Watching 2009 summer tour vids. This was the very first song I ever heard him sing live in person at a vip.
I forced back the tears, knowing I still had a whole night to get through.
But yeah. Thanks for posting this.

As I am doing my nightly catching up here…what a mix of emotions! First off, I couldn’t help but smile at Angelica’s comments on #25…and then outright laugh at the picture she included! If my daughter’s doctor looked like that, I’m sure she would have recovered long ago! Dr. Archuleta FTW! And may I just say, Angelica, that you have an incredible memory!
Then, the news of JR’s father passing reminded me how fragile life is and how precious our family relationships are. JR, may you feel our love and prayers, and may you and your loved ones find peace at this time.
Then, came the Matt Clayton picture! Wow! What can you say! Such a great shot! Matt has such a gift of bringing out the best in David. My daughter was lucky enough to work with him on a couple of occasions, and he has to be one of the nicest, funniest, down to earth people I know! He puts you at ease so quickly and makes you feel like an old friend. I can see why he is able to get such amazing shots of David.
And then to hear of Pattirae’s struggles–please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
And then, the RSO newsletter and the Spanish interview! I feel such happiness and pride for David at all he is experiencing and accomplishing…and contributing.
And then, the many words of encouragement and support. They have meant more to me than you know. And to that special someone who helped my daughter become a part of the pathway of hope…thank you. Your incredibly kind gesture has touched us deeply.
So many emotions tonight! What a great place to come to unwind before turning in.
I have to end with my favorite quote of the night: “I think we are all complete idiots because that look clearly says he’s got enough clues to solve the case! Book ‘em DA.” That’s gonna’ keep a smile on my face until I fall asleep!

Betsy,
I listened to the Heaven VIP with earbuds, and for once, didn’t blast the music in my ears. It didn’t stop my cat from looking up at me, whenever David reached a high note. There’s just no holding back the power of that voice.

So many excellent articles recently about David’s charitable works and their effects on others. Taking note of Abrra’s Ripple Effect, did y’all notice Wendy’s tweet on the sidebar? 200 bricks purchased for a total of $10,000 for RSO!! That does not include the 170 bricks purchased in the first phase. Now that’s some ripple effect!
And Bebe, about that new Matt Clayton you posted. Did you forget how to issue warnings? It’s okay for me to holler, “Holy Cow” when I am home alone, but I have to explain myself when the guys are home….

This is a replacement for the file I put up earlier. That one had the song but the file name said “good things come to those who wait” If you were looking for “HeavenVIP” in your download folder, it may have been confusing. I caught it and renamed the file.
The file above will work nicely on Ipod. And the name will be correct 😉

Watching this videoblog of David talking about children reminded me of when I took my two grandaughters ages 2 and 4 to the VIP in Greenville, SC. While standing next to David after the photo shoot, he turned to them and spoke. He asked the two year old questions about the little ball that she was holding. David was so gentle and sweet. He took his time too. Both girls were actually star struck when they saw David. They knew who he was because they listen to his music everyday. OK, so I also did a little brainwashing in the months prior. haha In the photo that was taken by the radio station, you can see the two year old’s eyes just beaming at David. The 4 year old is looking at the camera with a big smile on her face. Afterwards, the girls said to me,”I like him”. Now, the two year old doesn’t just say, “David”, she clearly says, “David Archuleta”!! Children gravitate towards David because he so childlike himself as far as how he looks at life with great anticipation. Kids are never intimidated by him. Their spirits connect because of their innocense.
My prayers are also with those that are afflicted with sorrow and worry. It’s good to have David and each other during these times of trials and heartache. Good people here at the “Voice”!!

Pattierae, you are so courageous … would your doctors consider a consult w/ “Dr. Archuleta”? … I’ve heard he is very good … and oh, please be seated when he comes, especially if he’s looking like the photo in # 60
Abrra, you are so astute and wise in aptly describing the significance of the “ripple effect” … what a positive impact David has had in supporting many worthy causes and how he has touched so many lives by just being who he is … can you imagine what this world would be like, if we would follow David’s lead and have the same level of care, value, respect, and understanding of each one’s potential “ripple effect”? what a wonderful way to make a difference in life and by doing so, it gives opportunity to make more people aware about David … hmmm, i think you have inspired a new task for us 🙂
Angelica, Djafan … the ripple photo with David is compelling … it lingers in my mind

David’s celebrity and talent surfaced at a point in time where the youth needed a solid role model. The collateral effect is that we adults needed to know that there is hope for the coming generation David has inspired all ages to be involved and care for those in need. What I am really blown away by is David’s non-judgmental attitude. He sees the good in everyone. Everyday he seems to do or say something that you just do not see people his age involved in
How many 20yr olds are so moved by small children that they run to make a video to express their delight about the honesty of children? I agree with Djafan, he is going to be a great father some day.

We’re looking for people who are inspiring, helping, working towards, or having a positive impact on the lives of other people.” What do you think? Some of you are such amazing writers, that maybe someone could write about David and all he’s done to get his fans involved in helping others.

133. Xaris: That video is great. You know, I’ve been watching AI this season. I keep waiting to hear someone with a melodic voice like David has, but I just haven’t.
David carries such a great melody when he sings. It’s that richness of tone that makes him so different. That’s why he’s so good acapella. He doesn’t need the music because the music is IN his voice.

Who has eyes like that, holy moses! And he was luminescent, literally glowing from the inside out.
dja, loove the Frank tweet. I’ve been wondering exactly where he is and what he is up to too. And where did he make that vlog? If you didn’t know better you would swear he was in one of those little photo booths!

Forgot to mention…love Melinda’s Funny Valentine. It makes me shudder to think about David in 10 years.

Emmegirl, what joy your newest addition to the family will bring into your life … congratulations!
MT, # 136 “He doesn’t need the music because the music is IN his voice”
This is so true … I too have been amazed at how David’s voice is a finely tuned instrument that showcases itself and needs no other accompaniment … his impromptu acapella performances highlights his artistic brilliance and sets him apart from so many singers that are currently on radio … really, all david needs is a mic, a stage and his fans …
Djafan # 139 The Grove was my very first David concert (not counting MoTab) and it left me wanting even more …

Pssst-everyone over here — (whispers)== DJA is lying to you!
Saying she has a file on the nose, she is using the whole nose as a cover up for her real fetish—THE NOSTRILS. I am privy to all this inside info from chat. Besides they are my downfall too. Fascinating, absolutely fascinating.
Abbra—–“David’s celebrity and talent surfaced at a point in time where the youth needed a solid role model. The collateral effect is that we adults needed to know that there is hope for the coming generation David has inspired all ages to be involved and care for those in need. What I am really blown away by is David’s non-judgmental attitude. He sees the good in everyone. Everyday he seems to do or say something that you just do not see people his age involved in.”
Can we take turns turning you upside down and shaking you–this is so well said–what else is caught up in there?
Emmegirl–Congrats
JR- I’m sorry about your Dad, but he’s just out of your sight now–not out of your heart, he’s still with you. I lost my Mom a year ago and as David says “You can’t believe they’re gone”
Guess I’m the resident night owl tonite.
