Pennies from Heaven
Posted by djafan on Monday, January 31, 2011
When I was a little girl growing up in Baton Rouge, there was no zoo but there was a children’s show called The Buckskin Bill Show. Every day he would remind the populace of this lack with the refrain, “Remember, Baton Rouge needs a zoo.” We children were assigned the task of buying an elephant. How long it took to accrue the amount needed, I don’t know. I know it went on for a long time. I mean, how much does an elephant cost, even in those days? Then there was shipping and handling to consider which must have cost a pretty penny. In fact, that’s exactly what it cost. How does one eat an elephant? One bite at a time. How does one buy an elephant? One penny at a time. Kiddies would traipse across the set of the Buckskin Bill Show putting their pennies in a barrel. Some would empty a bagful, some would put in only one cent but eventually enough was collected to buy not one but two elephants. They were named Penny and Penny Too.
That experience taught me something about how great things can be accomplished by small means.
A few days ago I asked for people to join our newly formed group on Angels for a Cause to help with Rising Star Outreach. Many of you have joined us and have donated money already to help uplift and give aid to those with leprosy and the far-reaching effects on their children. I know, too, that many folks are going through some difficult times with the economy as it is.
So here is my cunning plan. We all have spare change lying around, in purses, in bowls, in couches and elsewhere. I found a bag of change that I have had on the floor of a closet so long I had all but forgotten it was there. I poured it into a basket and added more change to it from a jar in the kitchen and a tray in my car. Here is what I ended up with.
I then took it to a grocery store and poured it into one of those coin collection machines. It printed out a voucher that I brought to a cashier who paid me cash. Do you know what was in that basket? $181.77! Enough to buy 3 bricks and then some! Just lying around collecting dust.
This is the cunning part of my plan. Anyone can do this. Gather your coins, convert them to cash and make a contribution to Rising Star Outreach. It doesn’t matter how small the amount or how big. Then email us at thevoiceda@gmail.com with how much you gave. We won’t post names of anyone just individual amounts, and a running total that we hope will grow and grow, one penny at a time.
I will be bringing my basket to work tomorrow. Lots of people come through my office every day and I will be asking them to donate their spare change to help the children of leprosy in India. I think they will be willing to do that. For thousands of years, the victims of leprosy and their families have had to beg for any small change just to survive. For a little while, I can do that for them to help ensure they never have to again.
I also want to make necklaces using a shiny new penny as a pendant and mail them out to everyone who joins our group on AFAC. It’s your choice of course, if you want to wear it but I think they will make great advertising. If anyone asks you why you are wearing a penny around your neck you can tell them what it represents. Hope for a better world, one penny at time.
So here is the plan:
1. Join The Voice group if you haven’t already and want to be a part of something wonderful. angelsforacause.ning.com
2. Donate whatever you can, even if it’s just loose change lying around your house or purse. Check under the sofa cushions. It’s almost time for spring cleaning anyway. No amount is too small. $5.00 is fine. Of course, larger donations are also welcome if you are able. Be sure to type in the comments when you donate that you are from The Voice group for AFAC.
3. Let your coworkers know about Rising Star Outreach and have a receptacle for change handy if they want to help out.
4. Email us at the voice thevoiceda@gmail.com with the amount of your donations since joining The Voice group on AFAC. We will be keeping a running total of all contributions and will post it here on the site and on AFAC.
5. Once I get the necklaces made I will need everyone’s home address sent to thevoiceda@gmail.com or the contact page above.
So that’s the plan. The goal is a million pennies for Rising Star Outreach.
A gathering of angels showering pennies from heaven. Continue to let us know in the comments on the site if you bought a brick and what you had engraved on it. What did I have engraved on the three bricks I bought with my change? Pennies From Heaven.

More David buzz!!! Love the “bordered on frenzy”
The Times of India
David Archuleta in Chennai
TNN, Feb 1, 2011, 12.00am IST
A popular star hotel in the city was the venue for a special performance, featuring a singing sensation, who didn’t need an introduction, — David Archuleta. The young American heartthrob was welcomed with cheerful hoots, whistles and hollers that bordered on frenzy.
Music lovers of all ages thronged to get up close and personal with David, who was more than happy to indulge his audiences. Accompanying David on this musical journey were Broadway artist Shaun Parry and celebrated choreographer Stacey Tookey.
The guests treated themselves to a fine spread of appetisers as conversations flowed freely during the serene evening. With great music and dance to boot, the partygoers had a blast of a night.

Awesome, Angelica!! Been collecting loose change here at work all day, and they told me to put up a jar in my office and they will all put their loose change in every day. So excited here!!
Please all have Pattirae in your thoughts and prayers tomorrow. She is having her lung cancer surgery tomorrow morning and will be in intensive care for 4 days and in the hospital total for at least 10 days. They are removing the upper top lobe of her left lung where the cancer is. I am so praying there will be good news that it hasn’t spread from that lobe and she can recover from this and move on to the breast cancer next and get that taken care of and get her on the road to recovery. She has a long year ahead of her, and I know all our prayers will help her get through this.
Have a nice day!! Did I ever tell you how much I love it here? Well, I do and then some!! This is the best place to come to and share our thoughts of David. So happy for him and this opportunity he is having in India. They are very happy special people in that country.

More buzz…
David’s Dosa Binge
From The Deccan Chronicle Feb 1
Who can forget the cute sixteen-year-old David Archuleta charming both judges and audiences on the seventh season of American Idol? The youngest ever contestant went on to become the runner-up in the contest and is now in the country to support a cause close to his heart — leprosy — and plans to visit various parts of the south to spread awareness and gather support.
“A close family friend of mine had once showed me a video on leprosy. I was shocked to see those images because I thought leprosy doesn’t exist in our times. I shared my views with my fans and they’re the ones who collected funds for me,” says David.
David who was on his way to meet the family says, “I’m looking forward to meeting people here and I hope I’m able to do some good for them.”
When asked how he manages his singing career and education, the 20-year-old singer says, “I guess it just happens by itself. But more than anything else it is the attitude that matters.” But amidst all the tours and interaction, David confesses, “The only Indian word I’ve learned is dosa.” So does that mean that the international singing sensation is smitten by the South Indian dish, we wonder. “Oh, I simply love dosas and the different kinds of chutneys,” he replies enthusiastically. “Even back in America, Indian dishes are on the top of my list whenever I have plans to eat out.”
Quiz him about Bollywood, however, and he confesses, “I haven’t seen any Indian movie yet and I plan to watch one soon. I recently discovered a theatre in Los Angeles where they screen Bollywood movies and I plan to go there.”
But this doesn’t mean that he is oblivious to the Indian music scene. “I have heard a lot of Indian music and I like listening to Lata Mangeshkar and A.R. Rahman,” he reveals. So will there be any Hindi music on his agenda anytime soon? “I would love to try but I don’t want to slaughter Indian words! But, the idea sounds interesting and I might just give it a shot,” he concludes.

What a wonderful idea! I’m not one who keeps change around though. I often pay for small items in change just to relieve the weight of the coins in my purse. I will have to start collecting them. This reminds me of the Penny-by-the-Inch campaigns that were used throughout LDS congregations to collect funds to support Primary Children’s Hospital here in Salt Lake City. The Primary (children’s age group up to 12) kids were so excited to be measured and give a penny for each inch of their height.
Shawna,
I too will keep Pattirae in my thoughts and prayers. I did not realize she also has lung cancer. Bless her heart!
Bebe,
You asked on the previous thread for a translation of “namaste.” The gesture (palms together in front of the heart/center of the chest and sometimes with a slight nod of the head), although often used simply as a greeting, carries deep spiritual meaning and basically means, “The divine in me recognizes the divine in you.” I love it.

This gave me a chuckle:
“The only Indian word I’ve learned is dosa.” So does that mean that the international singing sensation is smitten by the South Indian dish, we wonder. “Oh, I simply love dosas and the different kinds of chutneys,” he replies enthusiastically. “Even back in America, Indian dishes are on the top of my list whenever I have plans to eat out.”
Whenever I have plans to eat out??? Haha –I think that’s three times a day.
Had to Google dosas (like a crepe pancake)–had an idea about chutney.

It’s almost 8am in Chennai. David may be having breakfast OR making arrangements to head home. Who knows? I hope we’ll get a tweet from him soon. I’m very anxious to hear about his experiences in India from David in his own words. I think it may take a while for David to process everything he witnessed. I can’t begin to imagine the effect this trip has had on David, but I CAN imagine the effect HE had on those he came in contact with.
As we continue keeping him in our thoughts, I offer the Prayer for David, hoping he will be home very soon.
Dear Lord,
Please take care of David and protect him from all harm.
Cloak David with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path.
Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give.
Surround David with those who will love and support him unconditionally as we, his loyal and devoted fans do.
Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being.
Give David rest when he’s weary and stamina to sustain his hectic pace.
Give David assurance when he feels doubt and give him joy when he feels sad.
Keep David always in your protective arms when he is traveling near and far.
Keep David healthy and his voice clear and strong as he fulfills his Destiny.
May David continue to encounter goodwill and happiness wherever his life’s journey takes him.
May David always know & feel the love and pride we feel for him.
Though we may be unworthy, we humbly pray. Amen
David,
We miss you. Come home soon. Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, support & prayers always. Contigo siempre! We will be with you always! TAKE CARE!

Good night everyone!

SandyBeaches,
I just saw a comment that you are now a member of The Voice group on AFAC. Glad the ‘red tape’ got straightened out. 🙂
By the way, I purchased a brick last night and had it inscribed:
“The Voice – NY
David Archuleta”
Except for my state name (NY), it’s not very original but I like the idea of having David’s name inscribed on as many bricks as possible. Just a suggestion, in case you can’t think of an inscription.
Fanis/ODD, Thank you for the explanation of “namaste”. I know exactly what you mean now. A friend of mine went to India several times and has shown me that gesture. It’s genuine, it warms the heart…I love it.
Dak, We missed you in chat too, last Saturday. Hope to see you this weekend.

I googled about green dots and it said it means you’re online on fb so I guess Bebe is just right. There was a green one by me too.
I brought my basket to work today and got donations right away! Several guys come in to torment me routinely, (jk) and it gave me great pleasure to demand they pay up. haha. They were happy to do it. The picture of my basket really was taken this past Saturday, though there is a green vine in the background. What can I say, it’s great to live in the south this time of year. Hope all of you in the path of the storm tomorrow stay home and safe and warm! We will get just rain and possible tornadoes.
Pattirae is constantly in my prayers and I was just on her blog to leave a comment with much hope that all goes well with her surgery tomorrow. She is such a dear, special lady.
Poof,
Love your inscription too and the reasons behind it.
You don’t have to buy a whole brick. I think someone asked about that. Any amount will do just fine.
David cracks me up the way he talks sometimes, like he is from another century. “Oh I simply love dosas and the different chutneys.” Who talks like that? lol. Gotta love him.
He hasn’t tweeted in awhile. Maybe he will soon. I’m sure he’s being affected profoundly by what he’s experiencing.

“Thank you so much for your thoughts and perspective today Audrey. You are truly serving His children. My kids are so excited because at school this week they are having “penny wars”. They put pennies in jars and can “bomb” other class jars with silver money. Their Principal is coming to India this summer (she has been before) and all the money from the penny wars is going toward buying books for Rising Star. I am printing out some of your pictures and stories for them to share with their classes. They are so excited that they have a cousin in India working with Rising Star…it makes it personal for them that their school is raising money for you in India! You can tell your kids there that my kids here are thinking of them in their school! (small world sometimes)”

Betsy, thanks for the tip on bottles. We crush and collect cans and give those away but maybe we will start harvesting those pennies ourselves. Speaking of harvest, I’m trading my basket at work for a glass jar I found that’s embossed with the words, “Harvest Time” with sheaves of wheat below the words. I think that’s fitting in a way. I will be printing a label with Rising Star Outreach on it and whatever to decorate it and give it eye appeal. 🙂 Raked in more moolah today!

Another snow day here…and a slow day as well.
Think David’s traveling home now?
I hope he had some time to explore the countryside in India.
Kaycee: Prayers here for your daughter’s full recovery.
MunkFOD: Thank you for the link to Audrey’s blog. I read it earlier today and was deeply affected. Maybe David is keeping a journal of his experiences in India. For David, who is humble by nature, I can only imagine how this visit has affected him.
As someone on here said (forgive me, I forgot who it was)
“David doesn’t just talk the talk; he walks the walk.”
From The Hindu
Beyond dance
by Priyadarshini Paitandy
Excited squeals and giggles fill the air followed by shouts of “Once Again”. When the performance starts, there’s silence all around — just smiling faces and gleaming eyes taking in the goings-on on stage in rapt attention. While all this happens at Rhapsody at the Courtyard by Marriott, an equally large and enthusiastic crowd has gathered outside too.
In spite of being denied entry, they (mostly young girls), wait outside clapping and straining their ears to hear the latest poster boy of the music world, David Archuleta, sing. But what they miss out on is Shaun Parry and Stacey Tookey’s (choreographer of ‘So You Think You Can Dance?’) dance performance. And most importantly, the show put together by the children of Rising Star Outreach.
The kids sing along with David and also match steps with Shaun, a professional singer, dancer and Broadway artist from New York. “It took us two weeks to practise. I gave the kids very difficult moves, but they were brilliant,” says Shaun, who choreographed the show.

First & foremost today, praying & thinking of Pattirae, emifriend, & Kaycee. Also, hoping everyone who lives within the path of this latest “monster storm” stay safe & warm tonight.
As for David, it is about 7am Wednesday morning. We know nothing. We have heard nothing. We have seen nothing. From David or anyone else in the RSO group in the last 24 hours. Does that mean David is on his way home? I guess we’ll know when David wants us to know, remembering patience is a virtue. 😉 🙂
In the meantime, we will continue keeping him in our thoughts as I continue offering the Prayer for David until will comes home.
Dear Lord,
Please take care of David and protect him from all harm.
TAKE CARE!

I also “purchased” a Pathway brick. My inscription: “Even Angels Dream Sky High”

Speaking of David, where in the world is he????
David is still creating buzz. Here from Hollywoodnews.com
HollywoodNews.com: ‘American Idol’ is apparently doing something right this time around, at least according to former contestant David Archuleta who is excited for the new season.
Archuleta, who came in second, admits that this season feels fresh, states Reuters. “It feels like the first season of ‘American Idol’ is starting again,” Archuleta says about the new judges on board this year.
Archuleta also thinks that judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler are a nice addition, calling Lopez “nurturing” and Tyler “funny and entertaining.”

Looking forward to hearing what he has to say about his experience in India when he’s ready.

Just got home and watched David’s vlog. He looks older already! Kudos to him for getting a vlog up so soon. He must be exhausted from jet lag and the time change. In addition, I can’t even imagine how it feels to both emotionally drained and energized at the same time from this visit.
The pictures posted are mind-boggling. To live here in the US with all the comforts of home is in sharp contrast to the lives of those who have so little and yet are so grateful for each day.
Thank you, David and not just for your amazing music. I never expected my journey with you to be so fulfilling. You make me appreciate what I have, to be more compassionate, to try a little harder and to live life to it’s fullest.

Obviously he will never forget the people he encountered, the people whose feet he washed, whose hands he held. The children he sang to & talked to & laughed & played with. AND he must know, THEY will also NEVER forget the young man named David with the voice of an angel, the beautiful, gentle eyes, the hair blacker than night, the beautiful bright smile, the large hands with a soft & gentle healing touch. They will never forget David. Of that I am sure.
