A Night at the Grove With David Archuleta
Posted by djafan on Friday, January 21, 2011
When the tickets for MoTab were being distributed I had already secured 4 tickets for The Grove in Anaheim in Tier 3 for daughter, granddaughters and myself. Not the best seats but ok for David’s concert on December 29, one day after his birthday. Still flying high from my trip to Salt Lake I couldn’t believe I was going to see David again in a span of two weeks.
A few days before the concert my niece came to spend a few days with us for the holidays and wanted to go with us to the concert. Thanks to my lucky stars, Zully from Honduras took to Twitter to sell a ticket, a VIP ticket no less in Tier 1, Row E! I took it for guess who? Meeeee! I had made peace with the fact that I wouldn’t see David up close this time so this was such a sweet turn of events. I waited for Zully at the box office and was starting to panic because there was no sign of her. Suddenly Monica2112 from Twitter, who I’d told about the ticket situation, came walking up to me with another girl, Zully! She was in line for the Meet and Greet! We had crossed paths, so thank you Monica!
With ticket in hand I was now able to hang out and meet with David fans in VIP area, some for the first time: Vermeer, Marthazz, Seattle_D, Karenkid, Starrynites, NP1107, Nancy and a sweet lady who sat next to me during the concert (if you’re reading this please tweet me @djafans or shoot me an email through The Voice email). Great times and now it was time for the concert. In the audience sat fans of all ages, entire families. He is gaining in the guy and college age girls; they were representing!
The Set List
Something ‘Bout Love, The Other Side Of Down, Touch My Hand, To Be With You, A Little Too Not Over You, Parachutes and Airplanes, Angels, My Hands, Elevator, Pat-A-Pan, The First Noel, Complain, Falling Stars, My Kind Of Perfect, Stomping the Roses, and as a finale, Crush.
The concert was magnificent! David exploded onto the stage; he burst out like a flash of lightning, sparkling like only he does and there he was. I stood for most of the concert, dancing, singing, whistling and watching him intently, trying to remember every word and emotion that came to me as I watched him perform.
I’ve seen David perform live several times but this was by far the most intense, passionate, energized, sensitive, confident and powerful I’ve ever seen him. He owned that stage at The Grove and commanded the audience effortlessly, with a glance, a gesture, a smile. The power in his voice, the tenderness, the tone, deeper and richer than ever before, the new runs, the emotion pouring out to us, making even those old songs sound like new. When he sat at the piano, those of us on the left side of the venue couldn’t see him and he apologized that we wouldn’t be able to see his face. Can you believe that? Thank goodness for big screens which did enable us to see his beautiful face. I’m happy to say he was drinking lots of water (but I couldn’t secure his water bottle this time, darn it!) 😛 and sweated profusely from start to finish. For the first time I’ve ever seen, he actually took the towel handed to him and slowly wiped his brow, face and chin to the delight of everyone.
Wrapped up in his magic, I was feeling euphoric with a swelled heart filled with joy and gratitude. What a blessing it is to get David and his gift. He ended the set with “Stomping The Roses”. He told it to us and made us understand it! The energy, the sassiness, the flirtatiousness…WOW, he is a master at this I tell you. He left the stage but the applause was thunderous and out he came to close the show. I’m so glad that some were able to catch at least the audio so I may relive my experience, but boy do I miss the videos!
Stomping the Roses clip
Crush clip
As we walked to the car, I thought my evening was over. But I noticed a crowd gathering behind the venue and needless to say we ended up at a fence, waiting for David. In an hour’s time there were a few hundred of us waiting. Then the band came out and said “Bye” to us and told us David would be out shortly. The screams let us know when David appeared and he walked along the fence, Sharpie in hand, signing, giving high fives and beaming. You could see how happy he was to see us.
I took out my phone and ipod, started to record and before long he was in front of me signing my ipod!

David signing my ipod.
My granddaughter and niece took off their shoes and he signed those, too. BTW my niece is a new convert telling all on facebook about David and his amazing voice and her wonderful aunt!

Signing my niece's shoe.
It was a great ending to a perfect evening. It’s unfortunate that there are no videos from this show to capture the growth of this remarkable talent. Hopefully my words brought you a sense of what I experienced.

Dear dear Djafan,
Do you know how precious your recap is ? It was the first show after the new NO VIDEO POLICY “announced” by David’s manager on twitter, right?
From the white-piano-twitpic Melinda sent to fans that night I spotted David’s beautiful muscle line from his left shoulder all the way down to his back.It is beautiful. Staring at his back and listening to his performances somehow comforted me. At least there were something for eyes and ears. Lucky you! —you sat so near to David and enjoyed his live show. I’m jealous, jealous, jealous!!

Djafan, while watching David on stage in SLC, I wondered what the whole experience would do for him and just how he would be celebrating at the Grove. He was coming off of a stage that saw the most outstanding performances of his life so far, that must have filled him with an enormous amount of new confidence. You just have to look at his face in the lead picture here to see the celebration mode that he was in. Secondly, there was no better place to have an after party considering the fact that the stage seems to be his favourite place to be and of course with his fans who love his music. It was fantastic to have this concert at that time.
David was like the Energizer Bunny who probably didn’t want to stop at all that night. Some of his favorite stages in Manchester, Boston, Providence, New York, Long Island and all others are eagerly waiting for his return.

Good Morning!
Forgot to make my video public from after the concert. It is now!!!!!
MT,
It was the first show after the new NO VIDEO POLICY “announced” by David’s manager on twitter, right?
I know, some tried so hard to get video, but they were tough that night.
SB,
It was like he was also still flying high from the previous epic concert in Utah like me. He was so happy during and after the concert, all sparkly.
I’d like to read that poem.
Kimk, Thank you for your kind words. Crazy that I can’t wait to see him again, I tell you the more you see him the more you want to.
MT, Thank you. My niece was visiting this last week and watched SFTH with my granddaughter and I, she reminded me of Paula. She said she wants take his eyes and put them in a jar and carry them around with her. She’s a fan 🙂
My granddaughter was shocked that he has a mustache, the shadow…lol
Marylee,

Oh yes, thank you!

Love, love the recap dja. He “told it to you and made you understand it.” Yep, that’s what he does. 🙂
Last night, we all gathered at a restaurant to celebrate my sister’s birthday. Sometime during the eating, drinking and laughing hysterically, Falling Stars came on the restaurant’s sound system.
It sounded sooooo good. I have never heard David’s music in the general public before. And I gotta say, I like it.
I casually asked my nephew (he manages the place) how they choose the music. He said they choose an On Demand music station – kind of like they have available on Cable Tv.

This just in on Google Alert which may be old news or new news…but hey, who is leading the list of well known people?
“Sony Music has signed a deal with Mobile Roadie to offer the latter’s “DIY” app platform to its stable of artists. First up will be David Archuleta, Marc Anthony, Camila and Pink, and eight others.
The apps will be used to send out all things related to those artists: eg, news, tour dates and ticket info, music and videos; and paid content such as karaoke tracks and games. Mobile Roadie had already built up a reputation developing musicians’ apps so it’s an obvious partner for the venture.”

You had a really exciting night in Anaheim! “Ticked all the boxes” as Simon would say. 😉 David’s concerts are the best family affair ever. So happy that he did come out afterward. That is something he has not done too often. This was extra special. I think its great because not everyone can win a ticket to VIP.
I agree that David must have gotten a huge boost in confidence from MoTab because he sure put on a spectacular performance in Anaheim.
We were so fortunate to have ninja audio from that night. I put the songs on mediafire for download here:

I’m so glad you were there since we don’t have the videos we would normally have of David’s first (& only, so far) full concert since his CFTH Tour in 2009! Your detailed account allows us to share your unforgettable experience. Muchas Gracias!
And there’s a rumor that David will be performing in Indonesia in March?? Sounds plausible. But what is David doing until then, besides India?
No matter what David is doing or not doing next week, month, or year, I hope he knows we will always be here…We will stand by him through thick & thin. Especially when we have performances like The Grove or like this in Pittsburgh way back in the summer of 2009, to look forward to in the near future…
Good night & sweet dreams!

2 years ago a big Canadian David fan Gengen (anyone remembers her?)mentioned that she thought young girls were too silly when they met David in person. I did what she suggested when David came visit Singapore and I was so grateful for Gengen’s advise.

Been listening to my David song collection shuffled on iphone (only 162 songs). My husband kept asking “When did he sing that song?” Did he really think I found all these great covers (Edwin McCain, Josh Groban, Five for Fighting, Sting, etc) by myself? Amassed quite a collection over the past 3 years. It is a good listen.

Hi all! Just a little story I’ve been wanting to share: When David came to Bakersfield in Nov 09 my daughter and I went to see him. I was lucky to be able to get seats in the front row a little to the left. He came out running to the sound of “Waiting for Yesterday”. A little bit into the song, he walked over to our side. I went numb. Numb because he did that thing with his eyes. I guess what you call an Archugaze? He looked at me with bushy eyebrows and happy eyes. And he was generous with that gaze. He had this happy look that said to me, “I’m glad you’re here” But to me it was not just here in the theater, but HERE. I had trouble responding. I could hear my mind telling me to “do something, stupid!” All I could do was stretch out my arm and wave at him real quick-like as he was moving away. Don’t have to say that I keep that in my heart in a very special place.
Happy Saturday everyone!

Awww Angelica, Thank you so much for your words and encouragement in my attempts to put pencil to paper. I’m not a natural writer or a lot of other things I seem to be now, that David turned my world upside down or maybe right side up?! 🙂
Bebe and Abrra, those pictures, that’s all.
Gayle,
And he was generous with that gaze.
What a beautiful sentence!

abs, ik, it still hurts.
I lied. Still can’t get over the NYE performances. He was absolutely beautiful, pure class, looking every day of 20, voice strong and spot-on on a frosty night, took over that stage with complete assurance. The little dance moves, perfect, the smile, his presence; the thank you, smile that charms your socks off and little wave at the end of TOSOD.
Idk why, but I just love the little move at :23 where he throws his arms back opening up his chest a bit and steps out with his left leg. Have no reasonable explanation for my love of this wee little move.

Made my day all over again. The day in Providence where David looks at the dark haired girl after they hug, is forever etched in my memory. It was the first time I saw David up close. I am forever changed for the good 😉
I will never forget his hair and the glow of his face.
I want to thank everyone 🙂 who came to Unplugged last night for our weekly chat session. It’s a wonderful way for us to connect one on one in real time.

Official announcement finally?
“Notes of compassion”
PRIYADARSHINI PAITANDY
Reaching out: David Archuleta
American Idol contestant David Archuleta, who’s in town this weekend, speaks about giving back to society through music
Remember David Archuleta, the baby-faced first runner-up of ‘American Idol 7′? He’s coming to Chennai. What follows the announcement are shrieks of delight and a volley of queries —“When is he here? Where is he performing? Where to buy tickets?…”
Well, the singer will be here this weekend, but not for a concert. “I’ll be visiting Rising Star Outreach to meet children with leprosy, and their parents,” says David, in a phone interview. Rising Star Outreach (located in Kancheepuram district) works in close association with Marriott Home, which educates these children.
Marriott Home is an initiative by the Marriott group, and the event is part of Courtyard by Marriott’s fifth anniversary celebrations.
David has been associated with Rising Star Outreach for over a year now. “I was introduced to the organisation by my dentist, a good family friend of ours. He showed me the website. I didn’t even know that leprosy still existed,” he says. What shocked him most was that those with leprosy are still ostracised by society.
This is David’s first visit to India, and the singer says he is quite excited about it. But, his goal is to be able to give back something to the people he will be meeting. “I think I’ll get to sing for them. That will be a neat experience, as music is really special to me,” he says.
David, who’s released three albums so far, says his favourite singers include Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Eva Cassidy. Has he tried listening to Indian music? “I’ve heard Lata Mangeshkar when I was 15. I found her songs interesting,” he says.

India is ahead 12 hrs. I’m confused about which weekend, since THIS weekend is over in India & we know David was in Utah yesterday?? Unless he flew out late yesterday?
Have a great day!

Abrra beat me to the punch or post. (as usual).
Admins, go ahead & delete mine. 🙂
And I’m serious when I say I hope David wants to come home after he experiences India and the needs of the children there. They will be “changed” when they see & hear David sing, but more importantly David will also be CHANGED. This trip will be like nothing David has experienced so far.
And if he has not yet left or even if he has…
Dear Lord,
Please take care of David. Watch over him and protect him from all harm.
Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path.
Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give.
Surround David with people who will love and support David UNCONDITIONALLY as we, his Archangels do.
Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being.
Give him rest when he’s weary and stamina to sustain his hectic pace.
Give him assurance when he feels doubt and give him joy when he feels sad.
Keep him always in your protective arms during this time on his journey to India.
Keep David and and his voice healthy & strong as he fulfills his Destiny.
May he continue to encounter goodwill and happiness wherever his life journey takes him.
May David always know & feel the love and pride we feel for him.
Though we may be unworthy, we humbly pray.
Amen
David, Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, support & prayers always. Contigo siempre! We will be with you always!
Please TAKE CARE & GOD BE WITH YOU!

Right now I can’t help but think of David singing this…

David’s visit to India will be enriching for him and a blessing to those he shares his music with, people who have so little and are suffering the effects of leprosy. I imagine that this trip will shape the way he writes his next album as he reflects upon his experiences.
I’ve been a fan of an artist who went to India a few years ago. I remember how the trip affected the new music he wrote, which became less about himself and more about the human condition. He shared with his fans, the pics he took in India. It was the first time I had ever seen closeup personal photos of India. I was in awe and inspired. I hope David shares with us, too. 🙂

Me either, I never watch this one. Funny though, this is the performance that began my journey as a fangirl! My son saw the show, called me and said, “Mom, did you see American Idol? David messed up. You have to call in and vote. We can’t let them send him home. He’s too talented.” I called, I voted, and the rest is history. haha

Mariott is owned by a Mormon family. That also maybe how David got into this particular charity.
Since I was 17 yrs. old I have wanted to go to India. I had a friend who’s father was a reporter and photographer and he went there several times. The one chance that I had fell through. I love the architecture. A friend of my brother sent him 300 photos of India and my brother passed them on to me. Everyone was beautiful. Five years ago I went to Egypt and came back with stomach problems. Not serious but my doctor told me that people over 60 shouldn’t go to third world countries. Dang it! I hope David is kept safe and doesn’t get any bugs while he is there. Thanks Silverfox for your beautiful prayer. You have covered all of the basis.

David is so great, reaching out for people with leprosy , that was being outcast by the societies. It will be fulfilling experience and hopefully he write a song inspire by this experience in India.
Just want to share David kindness, when we were at the hotel, David bodyguard said no picture, but David said why not, so we take pictures ha ha! David keep saying sorry, he don’t look good right now and all smelly because he just come from airport, but he is glowing and smell so good ha ha. Like Gayle, I also experience archu smiling gaze upclose, that make me speechless and stunned ha ha! since I have a problem of responding quickly to a situation that make me surprise.

Jo, Loved your story. You’re so lucky to be the recipient of an Archugaze. I’ve met him twice and am still waiting for mine.
and JR, you lucky duck! I remember in your video you were seated to his right. I heard you introduce yourself. He looked directly at you and whammo, you got your Archugaze. I thought to myself “If she blocked it out, at least she has proof on video.” I’m pretty sure he has no idea what his eyes do to us.

Bebereader #62: First pic-Yup, that’s it…He has a way of making that joyful connection with you as another human being with just one look. I don’t think I would have survived anything like in the second photo! Emmegirl 65: That is a totally different kind of gaze 😉
David keeps inspiring me by getting personally involved where there is a need. Can’t wait to see what he has to share with us from his experience in India.
I sure do miss going on “Unplugged”. Been relying mainly on my phone to keep up! 🙂
Djafan, thank you for your recap. I loved it. I almost made it there. So close, then it all slipped away. (Whaaah!) Sorry, don’t mean to whine. This: “The power in his voice, the tenderness, the tone, deeper and richer than ever before, the new runs, the emotion pouring out to us, making even those old songs sound like new.” Delicious to my soul.
